Margaret Clarke, Lead School Nurse for LPT, said: “Health for Teens introduces a new and different way for young people aged 11 -16 to learn about their health. All the content has been written in consultation with young people, to provide engaging yet informative bite-sized content on topics that matter to them. Thank you to all the young people and schools involved, we couldn’t have produced something this fantastic without them and we hope that they will continue to inform us in keeping it fresh and up to date with the information they want to know about their health and wellbeing. The website is primarily a health promotion website, covering subjects that promote a healthy body and mind. It is not about managing serious illnesses for which more specialist websites already exist but we’ve signposted you to them where that’s applicable. Your school nursing service is always there to support you to stay happy and healthy – find out more about how to contact them by visiting www.healthforteens.co.uk “ The website has been partfunded by Leicestershire County Council, to support the hosting of a secure Year 7 questionnaire (launching in June) to help us gather the thoughts and views of young people and their health so that school nurses can best support them in their transition to secondary school.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club We really are having a lovely spring – no late frosts ( so far!!); our trees and hedgerows are in the first flush of new greenery and there is a splendid display of daffodils, primroses and other seasonal flowers.
Anstey Swifts Girls The Under 9 Swifts girls team have been training very hard every Saturday morning in the snow, ice, rain, mud and occasional bit of sun and have become a fantastic team of now 13 girls. They play very well considering they generally play against under 10 teams at football and our girls range from 7-9 years of age. We have just started an under 9 league and at present we have won 1, drawn 3 and only lost 1. The girls have lots of fun and enjoy working as a team in the many matches that get played throughout the year.
This is what we gardeners have been waiting for all winter and there are signs of activity all over the village. As usual we have to wait a little longer before we plant out our summer bedding but we should all have learnt by now that this is something you just don’t do too soon. After our Annual General Meeting in April we start our new season with a visit to the NGS garden at Barracca near Earl Shilton. This is a one acre garden containing a wide variety of features including a silver birch walk, a wildlife pond, a Mediterranean area and a utility garden for fruit and vegetables. This is our annual local visit when we gather together to enjoy someone else’s garden and share some food and drink. After that we move into our traditional summer activities with the garden party in July; our long trip in August which this year is to Hyde Hall the RHS garden in Essex; a collection of prestigious speakers culminating in our annual celebrity evening in October when Chris Beardshaw, the award winning garden designer and TV presenter is coming. We have also added an extra trip which is to the Norwell Gardens near Newark. Ticket sales for the Chris Beardshaw evening will be announced in the coming months, and we expect it to be very popular,so pencil in the date which is October 27th We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk .net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.
Anne and David Couling
Girls are invited to play with the Anstey Swifts from the age of 5 in the Academy team up to age 12. We are always looking for new players so if you are interested please get in touch or turn up on the Jubilee Recreational park on a Saturday morning and speak to one of the coaches. We would like to thank Garrett Long Solicitors, Scott Hunt of RB Ross, Sam Logue and Adam Langley of MK Technology and Kingsley Edwards of K.D. Edwards for their sponsorship towards the girls kit and football bags. They now look very smart in their fleeces, rain coats and kit all stored in their own sports bag. Well done to all the girls who currently play, the hard work in training is showing on the pitch at matches. Keep up the hard work and enjoy football. For more information please visit ansteyswifts.co.uk, or if your child is interested in playing please contact playfootball@ansteyswifts.co.uk

MARKFIELD AND ANSTEY SLIMMERS Some of the members from Markfield and Anstey Slimming World group with friends took part in the Twilight Walk in Leicester on the 25th April, even the rain didn’t stop them completing it to raise a considerable amount of money for Leicestershire based Cancer charity LOROS. Since January the two groups have grown to 150 members and have together lost a staggering 217 stone already this year through supporting each other and following the Slimming World plan, these losses have been life changing for the members. The leader Estelle says "to see my members grow in confidence, helping each other every week make decisions to improve their health forever makes me very proud, the ladies who did the walk with me are amazing, inspiring people and I am honoured to have them as members in my groups" If you would like to find out more about Slimming World or Estelle’s groups please call her on 07919 284924.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

MAY NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW WELCOME MEETING The welcome meeting for Choyce Close, The Close, James Street and the St James Gate schemes took place recently. Thank you to everyone who attended, especially the new coordinators. The coordinators were a bit disappointed with the low turnout. I do know that some didn’t receive an invitation, while others only received theirs on the day of the meeting. This was down to the coordinators for one reason or another not getting the invitations out on time. If anyone who didn’t get to the welcome meeting would like to attend one in the future, please let your coordinator know and I will invite you when we set up Charnwood Road. At these meetings you have an opportunity to hear all about what is happening in Anstey crime-wise, and about the new Police workings which started in February. I also bring along the security gadgets which I sell on behalf of the Police to try and make your homes more secure and to deter burglars. May I take this opportunity to welcome you all to Anstey NHW. Also many thanks to Arran and Anstey District Funeral Services, for their hospitality once again and making us very welcome. Unfortunately the new Coordinator for Charnwood Road had to resign for personal reasons just before the meeting so it didn’t leave time to organise a replacement for him. If anyone who has signed up to join the scheme would like to take on the role please get in touch as soon as possible. I don’t want to disappoint those who do want to join. Most of the hard work has now been done,
so whoever takes on this role, will have very little work to do. It is only a matter of being the representative for your road and attending a coordinators meeting every two months. If you would like to talk to the coordinators for James Street and The Close, please let me know and I will pass your details on to them.
NORTH AREA NHW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE EGM This meeting is taking place on Wednesday 27th May in the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey, starting at 7.30 pm. We usually hold an AGM at this time, but unfortunately this year it is an EGM to enable members to vote to dissolve this committee. The reason that we are dissolving it is due initially to the new Policing modules, which came into operation in March. The North Area NHW covered an area including Kegworth, Coalville, Loughborough and the Charnwood area. Under the new umbrella Kegworth and Ashby now come under the Northwest, whilst Loughborough and Charnwood have merged to become the Charnwood Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA). Leicestershire NHW association is being reorganised, and will follow the new Policing structure and have 9 NPA executive committees. Each NPA will now have their own NHW executive committee. Each area will also have their, own dedicated Police officer - ours is PC Glenn Musgrove. Each committee will have a Chairman, Vice Chair, Secretary and treasurer and other committee members. The purpose of the executive committees is
to try and support all the grassroot schemes, either with advice knowledge of local issues.

NEW POLICE MODULE March 2015 saw Leicestershire Police introduce a number of new teams aimed around providing a better service to communities. The local beat teams are now known as the Dedicated Neighbourhood Team (DNT) and are responsible (not exclusively) for managing offenders, vulnerability, ASB and community engagement. Each DNT is assigned to a specific geographical area and tasked to deal with issues relevant to it. A Neighbourhood Priority Team (NPT) has also been assigned to assist the DNT in targeting specific offenders or problems where an urgent hands-on approach is required. Responding to spontaneous incidents is now dealt with by the Patrol and Resolution Team (PRT) who deal with almost all emergencies and urgent calls. A Managed Appointment Unit (MAU) now deals with all non-urgent matters where a time and place can be arranged to meet a person and discuss their issues. Hope this is helpful. If anyone would like to get in touch with me, my details are: Phone 0116 2365745 or email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.
Updates. I arranged, along with the Anstey Parish Council, a meeting with the Police to discuss current policing plans for Anstey. This following several concerns with the current resource levels under the new policing structure. I will update you again on the outcome of this meeting, but I do understand from a recent telephone conversation that an extra resource will now be available to police the village. May I take this opportunity to thank all the residents and members of Neighbourhood Watch who have registered their concerns with me, I am hopeful I can report positive news on this issue after the meeting. I am pleased to report that the transferring of Anstey Library to the local community has moved a step closer to completion. I must thank again the Anstey Library Interest Group for all the work they have done to make this possible. Chairman of the Group, Phil Knight as ask me to enclose the following information. "The Anstey Library Group's Outline Business Plan has been approved by Leicestershire County Council and we are now moving ahead with practical measures to take over the running of the building. We hope to develop the library and Children's Centre (Sure Start), offering all the existing services and more, and we plan to make the whole building into a Community Hub. We want to involve as many people as possible in as many ways as possible, and we will be holding an event to talk about all this in Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road on the 26th May (the day after the Spring Bank Holiday) at 7.15pm. All are welcome, please bring along any ideas you may have. If you need any more information please contact Phi Knight at AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com. I am delighted there is an agreement to keep Sure Start within the Library building, which in my view, is excellent news for young families who use the facilities that are on offer, with the prospect of more to come. I received several calls about the unauthorised traveller camp at the bottom of Gorse Hill, Anstey over the Easter period. I have taken this up with officers at the County Council in order to understand what can be done to make this more difficult to happen in the future. I believe better security is needed to secure the emergency gate/barrier, this I will take up with officers at the County Council.
Highway and Car Park Improvements After being involved with several projects within my Division, I am pleased to report some have now been completed for the benefit of local residents. If you travel through Newtown Linford you will
8
notice that double yellow lines have been installed adjacent to the entrance to Bradgate Park. This has been delivered by the County Council after a petition was handed in by a resident and supported by myself. There have also been several other alterations within the village, which hopefully will help with the ever increasing levels of on street parking and highway safety issues. I also understand that No Cycling signs have been installed again on the footpath next to the Crown Pub, Bradgate Road, Anstey. This again after a request from a resident, especially as this footpath is used by many elderly residents. In my last report I referred to the resurfacing of the Anstey Nook car park. I am pleased that the markings indicating Short Stay Parking have been painted on the new surface. This again was a suggestion to me by a resident, which I pursued with Charnwood Borough Council. I am still involved with other items that have come forward, problems with vehicles parked on the footway at the Hallgates entrance to Bradgate Park and working with residents of Woodhouse Eaves, looking at measures to resolve issues with speeding traffic which is also a common problem in villages across my Division.
This event will again take place at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey on the 1st and 2nd August from 10.00am until 3.00pm on Saturday 1st August and 10.00am until 2.00pm on Sunday 2nd August. John tells me "come along and see a vast collection of memorabilia, have a cup of tea or coffee, a piece of cake and a go on the tombola" Once again, special vintage cars will be on display, I am sure these two days will be received as well as last years event.
Manifesto Launch. I attended the Conservative Group Launch at Queens Park, Loughborough, along with our two candidates for Anstey, Deborah Taylor and Sue Witts. Also in attendance was Edward Argar our Parliamentary Candidate for the General Election. If you would like more information or would like a copy of the Charnwood Manifesto please get in touch.
Vice Chairman Events. During this year I have had the privilege to attend many events throughout the County and beyond. I thought I would just make reference to the most recent one Joan and I attended, Girlguiding, Leicestershire's Review 2014. The highlight for me was seeing Brown Owl, Hilary Munks receive her award for being involved with the Newtown Linford Brownies for a magnificent 50 years. I was so proud that Hilary was recognised as I am sure we all know locally what a wonderful job she has done over all these years. I am told that she is the only one in Leicestershire who has completed 50 years with one group. Thank you Hilary, you have certainly made a difference within Newtown Linford, especially for the young people of the Parish.
Special Two Day Event. On behalf of the British Legion Anstey Branch, John Dowling has asked me to give details about this two day event. Following a very successful event last year to commemorate the start of the First World War. The Anstey Branch of the British Legion have, in conjunction with the Royal Air Force, organised an event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the Two World Wars.
Charnwood Local Plan (Core Strategy) Examination. The Charnwood Core Strategy was submitted to the Secretary of State in December 2013, for Independent Examination. A public hearing was held, which ended in January 2015. Following on, the Inspector undertaking the Examination has identified where changes (main modifications) are necessary to make the Core Strategy sound. The schedule of main modifications, along with the sustainability report, will be published for a six week period of consultation ending at 5pm on Tuesday 26th May. The schedule is available for inspection at the following locations: • Charnwood Borough Council's dedicated local plan website www.localplan.charnwood.gov.uk • Charnwood Borough Council's offices at Southfields, Loughborough, Leicestershire

• County Council Service Point at County Hall • All Public Libraries located within the Borough.
Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council
Any comments on the schedule should be made by e-mail to charnwood.programmeofficer@gmail.com or in writing to Jane Strachan, Programme Officer - Core Strategy Examination, c/o Planning and Regeneration, Charnwood Borough Council, Southfields, Loughborough. LE11 2TN.
April's film, Mr Turner, was rather long but very special. We saw an eccentric British painter who worked with gusto on his complex works of art. In contrast to his taciturn, rough manners, Turner studied storm, ships, sea and trains with precision, by immersing himself in the steam, spray and turbulent chaos. His faithful, neglected housekeeper contrasted sharply with his secret sea-side landlady lover. The whole film was brilliantly directed by Mike Leigh.
I am pleased to see the Core Strategy moving, in my view, to a final outcome, This will be very helpful when new planning applications are determined within my Division, especially in Anstey, where in my view we have seen too many piecemeal developments coming forward without the necessary infrastructure to cope, this is the case with the increase of traffic through our villages especially at peak times.
This film traces the history of the hotel from 1932 to the present day through the eyes of two lovers who are involved with a stolen painting. The characters are eccentric, with Bill Murray in a comic role and Ralph Fiennes performing brilliantly. Even the young lobby boy received an inheritance. Remarkably, this beautifully crafted comedy received four Oscar Awards and five BAFTA's.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello Everyone: As I used to say to my Dad when I was little, on our day trips to “Skeggy” sitting in the back of Walkers butchers’ Morris van, complete with meat hooks to hang on to. “Are we nearly there yet?” Well Election Day 2015 as crept quietly upon us all! On May 7th. 2015 Polling stations throughout the UK will be open from 7am to 10pm. In Anstey at the jubilee hall you will be given 3 papers. One each for, the Parliamentary General Election (1 vote.) Charnwood Borough Council (Up to 2 votes) and Anstey Parish Council (Up to 14 votes.) It is important to use your right to vote. Please do make the effort; no vote is ever a waste of time.
Anstey Parish Meeting. Well attended meeting of the parish on April 15th at the Jubilee Hall, Anstey. The chairman of the council gave a report on what the council as achieved over the last year and what we hope to achieve in the coming one. Chair of the Finance & Projects committee also reported on finance. After a public vote four community grants of £250 each were given to Anstey Luncheon Club, Anstey Town charity, Anstey Library action group and the 40th Scouts. Unfortunately the Anstey players’ drama group just missed out.
Jonathan Adams. RIP. A popular figure in Anstey, Thurcaston and Cropston riding his tractor, or on one of his many mowers, cutting the grass in all the three villages for the parish councils, as sadly passed away after a short illness, aged just 62. A good lad who would rarely get flustered. If he did Jonathan (the man in black!) would just make up another “roll up!!” He will be missed by many. Condolences to Hazel and the rest of the Family.
Vinyl night. Another successful vinyl night at the Nomads.
Micky Wilkes was the main man on the decks, with occasional “Live-ish” performances from Sunny & Share, the Rolling Bones. Bryan Cox MC’d and also sang as did big blues mamma and myself making a nervy “comeback” to the scene after 14 months. It was a great night out and we managed to raise £112 for the McMillan Cancer Charity. The next do will be in June. Who knows who will be on the special guests list? Come on down. From 8pm onwards. Admission is FREE but to get out before the end is £5!! Watch local shops for information.

Bradgate Drama Group? The drama society which has been going since 1948 is in danger of the curtain going down for the last time after the next production, unless they can find some “new blood” to tread the boards. Please contact: bradgatedrama@gmail.com or ring 01509 890771. Tickets for their next production are now on sale. To be or not to be? It’s up to you...
Anstey Footballers do well. Three young local lads have been successful over the last 12 months. Former Anstey Nomads wizard winger Wes York made a Wembley cup final debut appearance in the FA Trophy for Wrexham F.C. (Vanarama Conference Premier.) Wes came on as a sub during the second half and played well. He also scored his penalty in the “shoot out” but alas glory was not to be Wes’s, as opponents North Ferriby United (Vanarama Conferance North) won the penalty shoot-out. Always next year Wes? *Has any other person living
in the villages made a Wembley appearance? Centre half George Taft continues to progress at Burton Albion, who look likely to win the Sky Bet League 2 title. While Callum Cockerill-Mollett has been given a 2 year apprenticeship at Walsall F. C. who play in the Sky Bet League 1. Well done to ALL of you. ☺ ☺ ☺
Travellers? Happily they have now vacated the Gorse Hill area in Anstey. After 10 spaces were found at the new travellers’ legal site at Redhill, Birstall. All was settled, then at the last minute they refused to go because they said there were too many CCTV cameras on the new site!!! A court order had to be asked for and for the time being at least all is now back to normal, much to the relief of nearby residents and businesses. I have suggested that Double Yellow lines be put down from the height barrier to the bridge. This could save lots of problems and money, in the future. And will be to no detriment of the local residents.
GOOD NEWS? YES! A new Police Constable for Anstey. Starting in May 2015 PC Andy Moore (2905) will be on the beat along with our regular PCSO Phil Wright. The area sergeant will be PS Rod Smart. Anstey has been deemed as a low risk area for crime in Leicestershire. Now isn’t that good? ☺ Well done to the many neighbourhood “Watchers.” And finally: As I said at the beginning? Don’t forget to vote on May 7th. And send me a 66th Birthday Card on May 8th.! Thank you for your support in the past… Always a pleasure never a chore. ☺☺☺
John J. Sutherington.

POLICEMATTERS
Crime Figures 23rd Mar 2015 to 19th Apr 2015
Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 23 March 2015 and 19 April 2015 inclusive.
Burglary Dwelling – 1 Edward Street
Thefts from vehicles (particularly Vans) remains high, both for Anstey and the City and County in general. A number of operations have been carried out by the force and this has led to a number vehicles being stopped / searched and persons arrested. Some tools have also been recovered countywide as the force acts to try and stop this increase in vehicle crime. Please continue to be vigilant locally and report any suspicious activity involving vehicles, especially work vans. I have notified our Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators at the last meeting regarding this rise in vehicle crime, and so the ‘eyes’ of the village should be on the look out.
Burglary - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) -
Whilst we are on the subject of Neighbourhood Watch, it would be good to see some more of our co-ordinators attending the co-ordinators meetings. The last meeting saw just 6 co-ordinators in attendance, and I am informed by Diane Tillotson the Beat Manager that there are in excess of 30 co-ordinators in our village. You all do a great job, so why not come along to the meeting and take some of the credit for the excellent work that you all do
Anti-Social Behaviour As an update to the issues of anti-social behaviour that has seen an increase in the village over the last couple of months, I am pleased to report that there has been an increased presence of Police in the village and we continue to work with the Charnwood Borough Council Anti Social Behaviour team to try and provide interventions to decrease the ASB that is occurring. We have seen some further ASB, but thankfully not on the scale it has been in the last month. I am hoping to report soon that ASB presentations have been delivered to Martin High School assemblies, in an attempt to get the youths to understand the impact of their behaviour in the community. I do appreciate it is not necessarily always youths from Martin High School, or even youths from the village, however it is a good forum for us to get the message across.
Theft of Motor Vehicle – 1 Cropston Road Theft from Motor Vehicle - 14 (inc Attempts) – Ned Ludd Close x 2, Hollow Road x 3, Charles Drive, Hooks Close, Edward Street x 2, Groby Road, Ashfield Drive, Bradgate Road, Sutherington Way, Caters Close Damage to Motor Vehicle – 4 Wolfe End, Ashfield Drive, Ned Ludd Close, Cawley Field, Park Road Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Link Road Criminal Damage - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) Theft Store – 10 Co-op x 9, Londis x1
Security Finally, a reminder that now we seem to be enjoying some sunny and unseasonably hot weather please be sure to close your lower floor windows at the end of the day. Also, be vigilant when windows and doors are open when you are out enjoying the sun in the back garden, especially when you may be mowing the lawn and it is quite noisy. Don’t leave ‘opportunities’ for the thief to take advantage of. Enjoy the sun!
Theft Cycle – 0 Theft Property - 0 Criminal Damage to Property - 2 Nook Car Park, Highfield Street
As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. MAY IN THE GARDEN
May is possibly my favourite month at the nursery. Everything is fresh and there is a promise of better weather and sunny days. Beware though of late frosts – tender plants are not safe until the end of the month.
If you are growing your own half hardy annuals it is time to harden them off, pop them outside during the day and either cover them well or bring them back into a frost free environment in the evening. Top dress permanent outdoor pots with fresh compost and begin to feed every couple of weeks for healthy growth. Remember that plants in pots are entirely dependant on us for their water at this time of year. It might be time to think about a watering system for them and for your hanging baskets. Although the initial outlay will be in the region of £40 to £50 it is only the price of a couple of hanging baskets. What a shame it is when you have lovingly nurtured your tubs and baskets only to come home from a fortnight’s holiday to find that they haven’t been watered. There is still just about enough time to plant seed potatoes. For those already planted continue to earth up as necessary. Harvest Asparagus and Rhubarb. Thin out direct sown carrots and lettuce etc. Direct sow runner beans. Keep the veg plot well weeded – weeds are the competition for food, light and moisture. Plant tomatoes in the greenhouse. Ventilate well on warm days, damp down when it is hot. We recommend watering no later than lunch time if possible so that there is little excess moisture overnight when the greenhouse is shut up so reducing rotting off. Hang yellow sticky fly traps to monitor whitefly and aphid activity, deal with the little blighters as necessary. May is the ideal month to plant up hanging baskets. There is a myriad of plants available from geraniums and fuchsias to begonias and petunias and loads of others. Have you thought about incorporating a water retaining gel and slow release fertiliser into the compost? If using polythene as a liner don’t forget to make drainage holes about a third of the way up from the bottom. I’m a big fan of solar lights – why not have a couple of spotlights to enhance your plants, tubs or feature?

Glenfield U3A – Latest News
"Richard The Third! Oo's E then?"
Glenfield U3A (an organisation for the retired and semi-retired) continues to go from strength to strength. The current membership of just under 300 participate in 36 active groups with something for everyone to help them “have fun, make friends, stay fit and exercise the mind”. Over half our membership comes from outside the Glenfield area, from as far afield as Desford, Mountsorrel, Birstall, Leicester, Syston, Anstey, Markfield, Thornton, Kirby Muxloe, LFE, Countesthorpe, Groby and Enderby. Distance is no barrier to joining our group we make everyone welcome.
This is a comedy looking through the eyes of the people in the offices overlooking the site of the dig to find Richards body and how it will affect Leicester. It takes the form of a royal banquet which includes comic interludes of Richard and concludes with the trial of Richard the third. A ploughmans supper will be served at the interval and people are encouraged to bring their own drinks.
The groups include five walking groups, bird watching and natural history, gardening, creative writing, art appreciation, computing, history, card making, flower arranging, craft, ethnic eating, French, German, reading, photography, discussion, mah-jong, scrabble, indoor bowls, table tennis, Pilates, yoga, tai chi, cycling and badminton.
This is a comic farce that was shown in 2013 but has been updated and re-presented due to popular demand.
The monthly meetings take place on the fourth Thursday afternoon of the month in St Peter’s church centre, Glenfield; with a regular attendance of about a hundred members.
The dates are May 14, 15, 16th 2015 7.30pm at the URC church rooms. All tickets are reasonably priced at £7 with no concessions and are available by ringing Sarah on 0116 2886846. Tickets need to be booked in advance due to catering requirements.
There is a diverse programme of interesting talks and demonstrations throughout the year. So far this year we have had a talk and demonstration on ‘Exploding the Myths of Belly dancing’, ‘The Funny Side of the Funeral Business’ and ‘Sausage making’.
David Bown Secretary The Anstey Players.
Interspersed with the meetings are a number of organised additional events; including theatre outings, a trip to Blenheim Palace, the gardening group visit to Stoneywell, luncheons, quiz and skittles nights. There is a canal trip, a 60’s night and a talk by the Leicester Transport Heritage Trust in July and a strawberry cream tea in August, an antiques roadshow in October with TV personality Charles Hanson, a Christmas concert and much more.

Appeal for help from Bradgate Drama Society Dear Friends The Bradgate Drama Society has been treading the boards in Newtown Linford for some 60 years now and has delighted audiences young and old over the years. We are lucky enough to have great facilities including a great sound and lighting system and the facility to rehearse on stage which is always a bonus. We are also able to provide a bar on performance nights which add to the night out. Sadly even with all this in our favour we have reached a point whereby we are having to take a long hard look at how we are able to carry on. We have a diminishing membership and are finding it very hard to recruit new members, and none of us are getting any younger. Our audiences have also diminished over the last few years and from selling out over three nights we have had to reduce our performances to just two nights. All of this is having an effect on the type of productions we are able to produce. We have gone from having auditions to just seeing who is available and finding a play to fit. Without an injection of new members I feel that it won’t be long before we bring the final curtain down on the group. As Chairman of the society I do not wish to preside over the demise of the group, so if you are willing to join our group we would love to see you and don’t feel that you have be on the stage we need plenty of help behind the scenes as well. I realise that this may not be for everyone so if it’s not for you then why not lend your support by coming to see our productions. I am sure you would have a very enjoyable evening. If on reading this you think you may want join us then please contact myself via email bradgatedrama@gmail.com or if you don’t have email contact Toby Manning on 01530 245298 or Lesley Baker on 01509 890771. With a little more help and support we can together keep this group going to entertain people for many more years to come. As the saying goes “use or lose it” !
Andreas Hastie - Chairman, Bradgate Drama Society.

Each year LOROS need to raise £4.5 million to continue providing their unique care services to the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. THE MONDAY CLUB
Anstey W.I. Ghosts and Legends of Leicestershire David Bell had come to our meeting to tell us about some of the ghosts and legends which are known around our city and county, so we settled down to be thrilled and chilled by his stories. However, before he could begin we had our own chilling story. Ann Coney, our President, had to announce that the W.I. were missing their tea towels and even after meticulous searches and scrutiny of witnesses there were still no answers to the whereabouts of the missing tea towels….…. David being the trouper that he is maintained his composure and started his own talk on the subject of ghosts and legends. He covered such events as a coach and horses being seen going through Newtown Lindford to the church with Lady Jane Grey riding in it and the fact that she still roams her ruined home; the legend of Black Annis who was supposed to have been the witch that cursed King Richard III as he rode over Bow Bridge out of Leicester and we all know what happened to him.
ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
On Monday 13th April, it was with pleasure we greeted Mr. Martin Greenwood to give us a talk on “My Maritime Career” He commenced with attending the School of Navigation Warsash in 1963 until 1964 when he became Indentured to Furness Withy & Co. up to 1967. He then served on general cargo and passenger vessels as 3rd and 2nd Officer. He was appointed 2nd Officer to the new era of Pacific Steam Company Navagation Company tonnage serving West Coast of South America in 1973. Martin continued his position until he obtained his Masters FG in 1975. From then on his life was very varied, serving as Chief Officer on supercargo vessels chartered by PSNC and Furness Withy until 1982. From then he was Seconded to STREAMLINE as Asst. Operations Manager covering the Caribbean/Central America. From 1984 up until 1987 he was transferred to Hamburg to work in the EUROSAL consortium, as ship planner, planning container and general cargo vessels from Europe to the West Coast of South America. Then from there he was transferred to EUROSAL office in Valparaiso Chile, as Operations Manager responsible for WCSA operations. Thereafter he moved
It was an informative talk with our own members letting us all know their own stories of ghosts and legends of Leicestershire.
through different operations in much the same area until he moved to NCSO Centre in London (formally CAROL) in 1993 then in 1994 acting as Operations Manager. Subsequently on merger, and closure, in 2006 Martin went on to Hamburg Sud Office acting as a Marine Superintendent for two years until in June 2008 he returned to England and retirement. All this information was ably supported by some marvellous and detailed photography of the various Ships on which Martin sailed, together with awesome Sea conditions! In conclusion of the afternoon, we enjoyed luscious cakes provided by Gill Smart, our Treasurer. in celebration of her and her husband Jeff's, Golden Wedding Anniversary. We wish them both many more years of happiness and good health. There will be no Members Meeting in May, as we have planned a delightful Coach trip to Ludlow, but there will be the usual Meeting on Monday 8th June, when we shall welcome Mr. K.P.Goddard with a light hearted “Introduction to Classical Music”. For any further information please ring 0116 2363467

Disneyland Paris: Media Live! 30 pupils, 1 long outward coach journey and memories that will last a lifetime, is how I could sum up the trip for Media this year. Our first residential was full of fun and child-like wonder as pupils (and staff) saw how the park’s rides, design and branding used Media skills throughout.
The park days were broken up by a fantastic conference with a speech by a Sony Pictures executive who taught our pupils how to break into the Media industry in 13 ways. This was followed by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) who gave our pupils a valuable insight into regulatory issues of certificate and censorship that was designed to help them with their exam topic this year. All 30 pupils behaved impeccably and by the time our final day came to an end with a spectacular firework and light show around Sleeping Beauty’s castle, we felt less like a class and more like “Ohana,” – a family. This was an apt change as we’ve seen, through 2 intensive GCSE years; our pupils find their feet squarely. You were all fantastic Year 11 and that’s a wrap! Mr Butler, Mr Johnson and Mrs D’arcy
Icelandic Adventure
45 GCSE pupils visited Iceland over the February half term. Everyone had a great time, learnt a lot and represented their school brilliantly. Highlights included swimming in an outdoor geo-thermally heated pool in a blizzard, a glacier walk, exploring Geysir and visiting the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano (the one that stopped the planes). The trip introduced the pupils to a different culture and enhanced their understanding of the Restless Earth, Tourism and Coastal Zone units of the GCSE geography course. Mr Hackett, Head of Geography

Congratulations to the Year 8/9 combined rugby team who reached the county cup final, but sadly lost to Lutterworth High on Wednesday. Year 7 Girls football Beat Stonehill 8-0 and are now in the final to win the league. Well done to all. Miss Gee
Ex Student
One of our ex students Ryan Bray who attended in 2008 - 2011 is very passionate about his charity work! He is doing a skydive on the 28th April to raise money for the children’s charity Barnardos in association with the University of Derby where he is studying the BEd in Primary Education, which will qualify him to become a primary school teacher. Since leaving us he has been committed to many fund raising organisations and has now become an Event Manger. It is fantastic to hear about the exploits of our ex students and what they have gone on to do.
The Catering Team Having over 900 students on roll, there is never a day goes by when it is some ones birthday! The catering team have been asked by the students if a special birthday lunch package could be put on for them, and as always the team has risen to the challenge creating a birthday lunch which is apparently better than other leading pizza outlets! They are also providing a birthday cake if required for a nominal charge.

Markets matter Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club - it's official Charnwood Borough Council has welcomed a study which says that markets add vitality to towns, act as important catalysts for change and significantly increase footfall. The Markets Matter study by the Institute of Place Management and Manchester Metropolitan University also says markets matter both economically, socially and politically. The study features Loughborough and says towns with markets on a Thursday and Saturday like Loughborough enjoy a 20 per cent higher footfall than towns without a market. Chris Traill, Strategic Director for Neighbourhoods and Wellbeing, said: “I welcome this study and it just highlights how important markets like ours are to the local economy. “Loughborough Markets are a vital part of our town centre and that’s why last year we invested £150,000 to make them better for our traders and shoppers. “The markets attract visitors from a wide area who not only spend money on the market but in the surrounding shops. “Next month we will be taking part in the Love Your Local Market campaign and hosting one of our popular specialist markets Ceramics in Charnwood. The Markets Matter study features Loughborough at the top of a table of five locations which demonstrate the largest market effect out of a total of 84 market locations. Love Your Local Market takes place between May 14 and 16 and Ceramics in Charnwood is on Sunday, May 17.
The April meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was a most interesting talk titled ‘Heathy Eating with Fruit and Veg’. David Thornton, our speaker, works as an agricultural nutritionist but also has a passion for growing fruit and veg both to eat and also to show (indeed David visited the Club in 2012 with a talk on ‘Growing for Showing’).
David talked about ‘5 a day’, something we have all heard of. The idea of ‘5 a day’ was an American idea that was adopted by the British government and the NHS. So, have you had your 5 portions of fruit and veg today? Was it a struggle, or does your daily routine allow for regular intake of various healthy portions of fruit and veg, (with no cheating by having more than one glass of fruit juice!). David gave us lots of information from research findings about health in the Country (for example, obesity has increased 400 % in the last 25 years) but also lots of information about the benefits of fruit and veg. So, are you ready for the next piece of healthy eating advice? Ladies, you should be consuming at least 7 portions a day; gentleman at least 9. David also reminding us of all the benefits we get from our garden produce, and that freshness is key to getting the most benefit from fruit and veg. In addition, gardening provides exercise and reduces stress. David also introduced the idea that we should also have 5 colours of fruit and veg a day! He said that a good balanced diet should have a range of different colours represented if we are really going to eat healthily. Red, green, purple, orange, and even white (yes, those onions, leeks, cauliflower and garlic have their place in this healthy rainbow too). The 5 a day campaign is supported by many logos, often aimed at young families with children. This talk created a lot of interest amongst club members and there was a lively question and answer session. The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.
The next club events are:Wed 13th May, 7.45 pm – Wildlife: The Environment & Organic Gardening – Simon Gulliver Simon, a National Trust Consultant, will show us how to be kind to nature and still have a beautiful and productive garden. Encouraging biodiversity, avoiding chemicals, following natural cycles, observing and intervening only when necessary. Wed 10th June, 7.00 pm – Evening visit to ‘Mountain Ash’, Newtown Linford A 2-acre garden with stunning views across the Charnwood countryside. Near to the house are patios, lawns, water features, fruit trees, flower beds, and veg garden. The lawns slope down to a wildlife pond with a waterfall and 3 areas of woodland with pleasant walks through many species of trees. The perfect place to spend a summer’s evening. Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens 2015 www.tcog.org.uk Once again there will be an Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston this summer. This will take place on the weekend of 27th and 28th June 2 – 6pm. All money raised from the Open Gardens event will go to charity. This year we are raising money for LOROS. We hope to have a number of different gardens for you to visit across the two villages; some large, some small, some immaculate, some very much less so! But all for you to enjoy. Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens. Look out for further details nearer the actual weekend. Tea and cake will be available at various locations and a plant swap and sale will be held in one garden (bring along a spare plant from your own garden and swap it for something else!)
FILMREVIEW Avengers: Age of Ultron
In the aftermath of the untimely demise of S.H.I.E.L.D, Tony Stark and the rest of the Avengers must find a way to protect the earth, attempting yet another peacekeeping program, this time with an advanced artificial intelligence superpower named Ultron. The deal quickly turns sour however, when Ultron decides that human beings are the cause of Earth’s problems, before setting out on a mission to wipe them out. A global battle ensues with Captain America, Thor, Hulk, The Black Widow and Iron Man fighting for humanity in their most epic battle to date. Marvel fans are in for a treat over the next few years, with a string of hotly anticipated releases in the works. Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the second thrilling chapter in the franchise and sees the welcome return of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. The Avengers (2012) opened to glowing reviews and took a staggering $1.5 billion in global ticket sales – making it the third biggest grosser of all time and Marvel’s most successful picture to date.

For more information about this event, or to volunteer your garden, please have a look at our web site www.tcog.org.uk or contact Linda on 0116 2363872 or email linda@tcog.org.uk
Seeking to avenge the death of mercenary Owen Shaw, older brother and leader of a cutthroat street racing group, comes looking for Toretto and his crew.
Why not put the date in your diary now, then come along with your family and friends, and support this great community event, and help us raise money for a very worthwhile cause.
This all new action flick sees Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Dwayne Johnson and Jordana Brewster reprising their roles in the seventh thrilling instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise. Hardened action star Jason Statham features as the lethal leader of an illegal street racing crew, Deckard Shaw. Kurt Russell is also set to appear in the film in an unconfirmed role.
We look forward to seeing you!
