Anstey WI Anstey WI have been very busy recently. President Ann Coney and Chris Figgins visited the Anstey branch to present a cheque for £130, the record breaking proceeds of our garden party held in July. As each branch has to pay its own running costs, this was very gratefully received. Another record was broken at the Anstey gala, with the takings on our cakes, jam and crafts stall. All our hard work was worthwhile, and what’s more, we had fun doing it. At times members were seen bopping around the stall to the music from the arena. At the September meeting, Matthew Copley of Love Food Hate Waste was the speaker. Not wishing to teach his grandmother to suck eggs, or preach to the converted, he concentrated not so much on how to avoid food waste, but why it is so important in terms of producing enough to feed everyone, and of the environment. Members were encouraged to share their own tips for avoiding food waste It was a rare member of the audience who did not go home clutching freebies designed to encourage good food behaviour and advertise Love Food Hate Waste. Some even took things for other members of their families, to encourage them. On Centenary Day, 16th September, Anstey held an open evening, with a display of old photographs and scrapbooks, craft, cookery and flower arranging demonstrations, stalls and refreshments. It was visited by, among many others, the Chairman of the County Council, Cllr David Snartt, and Charnwood borough Clllr Deborah Taylor.

Report from Anstey Parish Council When we heard the words, dog show and archery in the same sentence alarm bells rang about this year’s Annual Anstey Gala. We need not of worried the Gala was wonderfully organised and it was a beautiful sunny day. It was nice to see so many people at the Parish Council stall.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Thurcaston & Racing Line Smashes Lap Record Cropston Parish Ccouncil News..
Ex-Kart Champion George Line from Thurcaston had mixed fortunes at the Castle Combe Racing Circuit in Wiltshire.
New Councillor As a result of a casual vacancy due to the retirement of Cropston Ward Councillor William Green, Mr John Armstrong of Latimer Road, Cropston was co-opted as Cropston Ward Parish Councillor after an unanimous vote at the Parish Council meeting held on Thursday 17th September 2015. John signed his Declaration of Acceptance of Office and joined other members for the rest of the meeting.
Dog Waste Bins The Parish Council have agreed to purchase 3 more dog waste bins for the Parish. One will be placed on corner of Station Road/Thurcaston Lane in Cropston, another will be placed at top of Leicester Road near to Fox Covert and one at the top of Brooky Lane (footpath opposite Rectory Lane) on Anstey Lane. We hope that this will encourage more people to clean up after their dogs.
Parish Council website The Parish Council will soon have a new website. It was agreed at the September Parish Council meeting to use SQUARESPACE as the new website provider.
Audit The Parish Council received the audited Annual Return from Grant Thornton for year ended 31st March 2015 early September and the Notice of Conclusion of Audit is now being displayed.

Why didn't the skeleton dance at the party? He had no body to dance with
Driving has Mazda MX5 2 litre in the BRSCC Mazda Super Cup he qualified on pole position but was then summoned to the Clerk of the Course for some questionable misdemeanour; he was demoted to 23rd place on the grid! From this lowly position he cut through the field to finish 7th. But there was good news, he finished smashing the lap record by 2.7seconds again proving he is the fastest driver on the track. George is supported by CMS Sepcor of Coalville and run by step-dad Robin Langford who competed in motorsport in the 1960s and 70s with Langrop of Anstey. Despite the setback of this weekend he holds 4th place in the championship only 6 points behind the leader.

Too busy for a cuppa DO YOU take fewer tea breaks at work these days? If so, you are not alone: it seems that nearly 50 per cent of workers are taking fewer breaks these days for fear that their bosses will think they are shirking. A recent survey found that nowadays, half of all workers feel too busy to stop for a cuppa, while one in four thought that they were not even allowed a break. One in five of us feel we are taking fewer breaks than we did during a typical day five years ago. Tetley, who carried out the study, also found that some male bosses are more likely to make themselves a secret brew, in order to avoid having to make a round for their colleagues.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.
County Service. One of the highlights of the year for me as Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council is the Annual County Service. This year it will be held at Leicester Cathedral on Sunday 18th October. The Service will be led by the Dean of Leicester, The Very Reverend David Monteith and the Interim Bishop of Leicester, The Right Reverend John Holbrook will preach. I am also pleased that local Team Rector Reverend Dr Peter Hooper will be involved in the service. I would be delighted to see as many local residents as possible attend my service as it is a great honour for me to have the County Service at Leicester Cathedral, I do hope to see you there (please be seated by 2.45pm).
Recent Local Events. Once again it has come to the time of year when a lot of local events take place in my Division. I do try to attend as many as possible that I am invited to, but it has been a little more difficult this year with the extra events I have attended as Chairman of the County Council.
the information supplied by the volunteers taking over the running of the Anstey Library. I understand that more volunteers came forward on the day to register their interest in helping. I am sure the group were delighted with the response, especially as it is getting near to taking over the Library. I know residents living in neighbouring villages also use this Library, therefore I am sure the group would be delighted to hear from you. If you would like information on how you could help. Please contact by e-mail admin@AnsteyLibrary.com or telephone 0794 1959045. On the same day I attended the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Annual Garden Craft and Produce Show where again I was asked to present the trophies to the winners of the different sections. There was an excellent array of exhibits, I especially enjoyed the ones the young people had entered in the show, it is pleasing to see that they are contributing to the overall success of this well established show.
I must pay tribute to the many volunteers who do so much work within their organisations to make a difference within their local communities, without them many of these wonderful events would not survive. This year the Anstey Gala was blessed with fine weather, it was good to see so many people enjoying themselves, taking time to visit the many stalls around the recci. I was particularly pleased to see so many people interested in
This was also the case when I visited the Horticultural and Craft Show at Woodhouse Eaves, with many entries from young people, which were very creative in the wide selection of classes open to young people in the show.
The Buskerteers Evening. I was delighted to attend the vinyl/live acts evening at the Anstey Nomads FC. This was referred to in John Sutherington’s report last month. It was good to see him there after being in hospital recently. Joan and I were made most welcome and I am sure a most enjoyable evening was had by all (we seem to know the words to most of the songs). The raffle was to raise money for one of my Chairman’s charities this year, The Mablethorpe Children’s Centre. I understand from Chrissie that over £300 was raised for the charity on the night.
Updates. I have had a meeting with officers at County Hall about the continuing issues with traveller encampments at the bottom of Gorse Hill, Anstey, near to the tennis courts and businesses. Officers are now looking to see what measures can be put in place to try and overcome the problems that arise when these frequent encampments are in this part of Anstey. Following recent correspondence from a resident about speeding traffic along Beacon
Opening of the Community Building. I was delighted to be asked to officially open the new Community Building at the Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall. The new building replaces a very old wooden hut which was demolished in January this year. I understand previously this had been used for several different activities over the years, including a venue for the Home Guard. I must congratulate the Parish Council for bringing this excellent new facility to fruition, I know it was not all plain sailing during the initial stages of construction, but after seeing the final result of this new building, I am sure it will be a great asset to the local community. It was a pleasure to see so many young people demonstrating their activities during the opening event. I am told that a number of mainly children’s groups have already booked their regular sessions in this new building.

Road, Woodhouse Eaves, I raised the issue with the Director of Highways at County Hall. I have received the following information back from him “the traffic management team will undertake a review of the current accident record at the location and audit the current speed restrictions, signing and lining to ensure that they are appropriate for the site”.
You May Need Permission to Pave. This information came to me from Charnwood Borough Council. I thought it may be of interest to local residents. If you are planning on paving over your front garden, then just check as you may need planning permission. In 2007 serious flooding across Britain caused loss of life, disruption of peoples’ lives and damage estimated at about £3bn. In many cases flooding happened because drains could not cope with the amount of rain water flowing to them and this may occur more often in the future. The drains built many years ago were not designed to cope with increased rainfall. More water is entering the drains from new developments and paving front gardens adds to the problem. What you can do without planning permission: A new or replacement driveway or hard surface of any size which uses permeable (or porous) surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete, block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally or a soak away. What requires planning permission: Since 2008 traditional hard surface impermeable driveways to the front of a property which covers more than five square meters and does not provide for the water to run to a permeable area requires planning permission. If you require further information on how to apply for planning permission visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/submit_a_ planning_application If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. Film Presentations Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council In the "Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", there were plenty of occasions which made us laugh and so many budding romances, yet Judi Dench as Muriel, showed considerable talent for business. As the wedding celebrations in Jaipur, were noisy, flamboyant and colourful, our guests found partners. The owner/groom proved that he was indeed a competent dancer, worthy of his new wife.
The Imitation Game “The Imitation Game" will be shown on October 16th and lasts 114 minutes. October’s film October’s film is set in Bletchley Park during the Second World War when Alan Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, amazingly breaks the Enigma Code. This film is a "must" for our cinema goers.
Selma "Selma" will be shown on November 13th and lasts 128 minutes. "Selma" is a chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. Played by Oxford-born David Oyelowu, Luther King was mesmerising, but even a trip to the White House by Luther King was unsuccessful. This film is very powerful, with terrific performances by the actors. "Far from the Madding Crowd" will be shown on December 11th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm. Tickets will cost £5 and concessions will be £4.50. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

“Greys and Hastings – Families at War” Talk by Dave Taylor Monday 19th October 2015 at 7.30 p.m. Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall Throughout much of history the rivalry between the Grey and Hastings families has been a feature of the story of the East Midlands. We will be tracing this through the coming to prominence of both families towards the end of the late Middle Ages through Tudor Times, the English Civil War, the Restoration and beyond. Beginning with the link with the Ferrers family which brought the Greys to prominence and the relationship between the ill fated Lord Hastings and King Richard lll we will chart the fluctuating fortunes of the two families – the prominence of the Hastings “puritan” Earl of Huntingdon under Elizabeth l, the resurgence of Grey fortunes under James l through the taking of opposite sides during the Civil War, to the later fading into relative obscurity of both families.

OCTOBER IN THE GARDEN
Welcome to Autumn! In some respects I love the autumn, the chilly mornings and the warm days, the colours of the leaves, but on the other hand it heralds the arrival of winter and damp, dismal November. Now if the time to invest in some fleece to cover up tender half hardy plants and to lift summer flowering bulbs and tubers such as dahlias, gladioli and begonias. In their place plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips. Lift summer bedding and replace with winter flowering plants eg wallflowers, primulas, and pansies. Also replant tubs with winter flowering plants and consider underplanting with dwarf daffs and tulips.
Prune climbing roses and tie into a frame to prevent the wind from damaging them. Cut back perennials that have finished flowering and clear the borders of weeds and debris. Consider using a mulch to keep the ground weed free and to provide some insulation for the plants during the winter. Finish harvesting peas and beans. Harvest pumpkins before the first frost. Plant overwintering onions and garlic. Cut back the fruited canes of summer raspberries and tie in next years’ fruiting canes. Clear the straw from around the base of strawberries and give them a good haircut to encourage new growth. Use glue bands around the trunks of fruit trees to trap winter moth, earwigs and ants. Apply a winter wash to trunks and branches of fruit trees to kill overwintering pests. If you still have plants in the greenhouse remove the shading to make of the most of the light. Once the greenhouse is clear, disinfect and clean it before moving in any tender species. Remember to check these plants for pest and disease. Set the heater in case of frost. Clear the lawns of any debris and tidy up the edges. Mow if needed and if conditions allow. Aerate and top dress ready for the winter. New turf can also be planted now. Hedges can have their final cut of the year too. Net ponds to prevent leaves from falling into the water and consider encouraging birds into the garden to eat and pests that are about. Then retire to the sofa with a cup of coffee ready for Strictly and the last series of Downton!

Latest Borough News… Congratulations I would like to personally congratulate Liz Hawkes, the Clerk to Anstey Parish Council, for successfully passing her degree in Community Engagement and Governance. Liz is now the highest qualified working Clerk in Leicestershire. A great achievement for Liz and Anstey Parish Council is very fortunate to have such a highly qualified Clerk.
Gala Thankfully we had a dry but somewhat cloudy day for Anstey’s Gala. As always we had a good turnout of stalls, local groups and supporting residents. I really enjoyed the afternoon and was honoured to escort Charnwood’s MP, Ed Argar, around the Gala, introducing him to many of our local groups. Ed managed to stay and chat for around an hour before heading off to his fifth village of the day to attend their local fête. The Anstey Village Gala Church Service on Sunday morning was also well attended and it was a lovely warm sunny morning. I would like to say a big thank-you to all the Gala committee for their hard work. We look forward to the Christmas Gala!
Events On Thursday 3rd September I attended a workshop in Loughborough regarding the grants available in Leicestershire. The workshop covered grants offered by Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council and various other streams of grant funding. The workshop provided me with the information on the criteria that needs to be met, cut off dates, budgets available and tips on completing application forms. If any local groups would like any further information I will be happy to signpost them in the right direction.
Committees I have been chosen to sit on two new committees for the Borough Council. The first one is the Empty Homes Scrutiny Panel. The question we will be trying to answer is ‘What options are available to enable Charnwood Borough Council to bring more empty homes back into use?’ There are four meetings scheduled for this financial year. I will also be sitting on the Member Development Member
14
Reference Group. This committee aims to assist all Councillors with their training and development needs. It will also take over the running of the Member Development Strategy and its implementation. This committee will run quarterly meetings for the remainder of this elected term.
All these repairs have to be paid for by Anstey Parish Council from their yearly allocated budget. Some of the funding to run the Parish Council and cover these repairs comes from our Council Tax payments. The money spent on all these repairs is money that cannot be spent on essential services, grants for local groups and general improvements to Anstey that benefit us all. We are also seeing an increase in anti-social behaviour in Anstey. I urge you to report any vandalism or anti-social to the Police. Without any logged behaviour local Police are unable to access reports the
Core Strategy Charnwood Borough Council’s proposed Core Strategy has passed another significant milestone. Planning Inspector Kevin Ward, who has scrutinised the Council’s vision of where future development should take place in the borough, has completed his final report. It concludes that with the changes he has proposed, the Core Strategy is sound and can be adopted. The Council can now consider adopting the Core Strategy, possibly at the Full Council meeting on 9th November 2015. To find out more and read the inspectors report please visit Charnwood Borough Council’s website.

Trick or Treat
Our Year 11’s were really successful this summer with 55% getting A*-C including English and Maths. Our A* and A grades were also phenomenal; a breakdown of which is on our website. Already we have been busy, with our Open Evening being the busiest ever, and our new ‘Back to School’ event where parents joined children in the classroom, was a huge success.
Remember not everybody enjoys Halloween, for some people it is a scary time of year. If you do not wish for trick or treaters to call you can download a poster from the Leicestershire Police website at https://leics.police.uk/information-and-advice/library/posters#.VCvEhr6dz8u. If you don’t mind trick or treaters there is also a ‘Welcome Here’ poster also available at the same website.
NO THANKS Trick or treaters
Please DON’T knock on this door as we do not wish to take part.
Trick or treaters Welcome here
What a great start to the new term at Martin High School. As the new Head Teacher I have been fortunate enough to inherit an 11-16 School with deep foundations; so for MHS the only way is up.
Safely and Responsibly This Halloween
The Martin High School..
Our calendar for September was full, and as students settle to hard work, we found time to raise £756.16 for Jeans for Genes and 750 students took part in the Bowline Walk on Friday 25th September, raising money for MHS.

At home
• Consider displaying a ‘no trick or treaters’ poster if you don’t want people knocking at your door.
Our Year 11 are working particularly hard with our Futures Evening being held on 15th October; they will begin planning for their next exciting steps after GCSE. It really has been a positive and busy start to the academic year.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 21 August and 20 September 2015 inclusive.
The Dark Nights are Coming As we say goodbye to the Summer (did we ever say Hello!) the dark nights are creeping upon us, and this should bring a change of focus regarding the security of your property. During the month of October, the Beat Team will be carrying out a ‘No Lights On! Campaign and during our foot patrols we will be posting leaflets to houses in darkness that we believe nobody is home. If we think nobody is home, so could burglars, so it makes good sense to ‘light up’ in October:
Crime Figures 21st August 2015 to 19th Sept 2015 Burglary Dwelling – 3 Sutherington Way, Gynsill Lane x 2 Burglary - 1 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) Edward Street Theft of Motor Vehicle – 1 Link Road (Attempt) Theft from Motor Vehicle - 0 (inc Attempts) –
• Lights give the impression someone is home • Use light timers to automatically switch lights on
Damage to Motor Vehicle – 0
• Encourage friends and family to do the same
Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Link Road
• Check all external lighting is working Make sure you keep your home secure.
Halloween / Trick or Treat Late October also brings the ‘haunting season’ where I am sure a number of children will be out ‘Trick or Treating’. Please ensure your children remain safe by following this safety advice:
Criminal Damage - 1 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) Nook Car Park Toilets
• An ADULT should always accompany children
Theft Store – 2 Co-Op x2
• Don’t talk to strangers
Theft Cycle – 0
• Only go to houses where the residents are known (friends, relatives etc)
Theft Property - 0
• Only visit houses with lights ON • If the house has a poster in the window saying ‘No trick or treater’s’ – Don’t visit • Never, ever go inside to collect sweets
NO THANKS Trick or treaters
• Trim costumes with reflective tape (never wear a costume that is all black) • Carry a torch (glow sticks, flashing lights) • Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling • Masks should fit properly – why not try ‘face painting’ instead of a mask.
Have fun but be safe……………
As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111
Please DON’T knock on this door as we do not wish to take part.

New Volunteers for Breastfeeding Peer Support Ten women have recently been trained to become breastfeeding peer supporters to help families give their babies the best possible start in life. The Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group is run by peer supporter volunteers who are fully trained in all aspects of breastfeeding. The new members have joined existing volunteers to provide information, reassurance and support to parents and parents-to-be at every stage from pregnancy to weaning. They offer one-to-one support, a telephone helpline, breastfeeding cafes, antenatal workshops and returning to work sessions. Lucy Rossa lives in Anstey and has a one year old son. She is one of the new members and explains why she did the training “I wanted to help others to overcome breastfeeding issues as I know how hard it can be without support.” Charlotte Stanton lives in Woodhouse Eaves and has a four year old daughter and one year old son. She is one of the new members and explains why she enjoys being part of the team, “Being a BRAS volunteer has not only taught me how I can help other mothers throughout their journey, but has also provided me with more knowledge & preparation for my own future breastfeeding journeys.” Joanne Talbot of the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust is one of the trainers on the course. She says “We have a fantastic team of ladies across Charnwood now, who have diverse backgrounds and huge amounts of expertise. With the support out there like never before hopefully every family who wants to breastfeed will feel supported even through any difficult situations.” Another new BRAS member is Fern Desbrow from Thurmaston. She has a young daughter and decided to become a breastfeeding peer supporter to help other mums – “Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience for both mum and baby and I would like as many new mums as possible to experience that. There are also still a lot of myths and stigmas surrounding breastfeeding, the correct information and support needs to be more readily available.” For more information about breastfeeding see www.leicspart.nhs.uk/infantfeeding and for more information about antenatal workshops and support see www.charnwoodbras.co.uk or telephone 07583 041054

THE MONDAY CLUB
ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
Team Anstey Amblers and Runners We continue to grow with members of all abilities and ages, runners and walkers. Is a Running/Walking Club for you? If you are tempted to join our club, but not sure whether a running/walking club is for you don’t worry! Our club is for everyone. Our current members include: Athletic Types – Some of our members have always been athletic but for whatever reason have stopped playing football/rugby etc., but still want to remain active.
On a somewhat disappointingly cold and wet afternoon, on Monday 14th September, a sizeable number of members and visitors came into the warm with their goodies for sale for our Harvest Bring and Buy tables. There were some mouth-watering pastry offerings, together with jams and cakes and, fresh from the garden, appeared a variety of fruit and vegetables enticingly displayed in various baskets etc. However, before we set about selling the produce we decided to relax and enjoy our speaker Mr. Andrew Parsons, telling us about “Farming with Wildlife”, he informed us that “Acorn Farm” in Sutton on Trent had belonged to his family since his Grandfather had come as a child in the 1880s and who was brought up by an Aunt and Uncle who lived in the village. He then married a local girl in 1912 and was tenant of “Woodbine Farm” containing 30 acres. The farm grew in size, as well as the family consisting of seven children. By the mid-1950s Andrew’s father and his Uncle went into partnership, but unfortunately this broke down and the farm was split up. However, in due time the size of the farm increased back to its original size and flourished with acres of ground supporting both considerable herds of cattle and flocks of sheep. Further acreage lent itself to arable farming and in this state care and attention was given to the access and support of various wild birds, animals and insects by careful planning of the working of the fields and hedgerows. Andrew is the 3rd generation and now works part-time Managing Acorn Farm Visits, as well as running a successful photographic business. During his talk we were delighted to witness a vast number of his photographic work displaying well known birds and animals together with quite a few lesser known; all in perfectly natural settings. There was a very appreciative response from his audience with oohs and aarhs and laughter. A truly delightful talk.
Families - We welcome families along with children aged 12-18. Due to insurance the children have to be accompanied by an adult so what better way to get the kids active and yourself too.
In keeping with the happy atmosphere, we then listened to a delightful poem “written and spoken with a Yorkshire accent!!!” by our resident Poet, Mrs. Margaret Hooper “The Monday Club – for the Brave!!”………………a real knock out!!!
Retired – We have quite a few retired members who are keen to stay active and are really enjoying the running and the social aspect of the club
Finally we achieved a very successful selling of the produce and this was followed by tea and cakes. The yummy cakes were supplied this month by Mrs Heather Tighe and Mrs. Maja Tompkins all of which disappeared without difficulty and brought about the end of a very lovely afternoon!
And many people that just need a little bit of support and enjoy the company. All new members say how friendly everyone is within the club, and how welcome they’ve felt joining the club. It’s daunting for most people to try something new, so please talk to us if you’d like to come along.
Our next Meeting will be on 12th October at 2.15pm when we shall once again welcome our old friend Mr. Derek Holloway – this time “Introducing Charles Darwin”. He will undoubtedly deliver a fascinating subject in his own riveting style.
Meeting Place We meet at the Anstey Nomads ground every Tuesday and Thursday at 6.45pm. We have a beginners group on a Thursday night.

Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club Annual Show – 5th September 2015 The Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club’s 32nd Annual Show was held at the Richard Hill Primary School on 5th September 2015. It was one of those days when a cold, damp early morning makes for a very slow start and just as we’re thinking the worst, the sun comes out and everything changes. The exhibitors turned up and the Show benches gradually filled with the high standard exhibits we have come to expect. Our trophy winners were; Mr. Paul Stubbs, who retained the Sedgwick Cup presented to the exhibitor gaining the highest overall points in the Show, with an outstanding display of versatility. He won classes in the Vegetable, Flower, Home Baking and the Arts & Crafts sections. His vintage clock in the latter awarded him the Orton Cup for Best Exhibit in Show. Mr. Phil Dews retained the Challenge Trophy for the best points total by a Garden Club member and Mrs. Marjorie Kirk gave us another masterclass in flower arranging, retaining the Pat Jones Bowl in the Floral Art section. Other trophy winners were Mrs. Alison Briggs, Mrs. Joan Harrup, Mrs. Janet Edwards and our new ‘Novice of the Year’ Mrs. Annette Spurr (awarded to the exhibitors with the most overall points who has never won a Club trophy before). Last year’s ‘Novice Trophy’ winner, Mrs. Lesley Day continued her ‘progress’ by winning the Committee Trophy for the most points in the Home Baking section. It’s always good to see people winning trophies for the first time, and this year the Delia Brock Photographer of the Year Trophy was jointly won by Jackie Price and Hayley Donohoe. Well done ladies. Congratulations to Master Andrew Holyoake who is the new name on the Junior Cup (most points by a junior in the adult classes). He was also a double winner in the Children’s Classes
so it was a magnificent three gold medals for Andrew. We would like to thank the school children, the Girl Guides and the Brownies for their excellent contributions in the children’s classes, it was a magnificent array of colourful and imaginative entries. Cllr. David Snartt, who has supported us for many years, was again on hand to present the trophies, this time as Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council, many thanks to him for finding the time in his busy schedule. A final thanks goes to exhibitors and visitors and everyone who contributed to the smooth running of the Show. See you all again next year.
Mrs. Janet Edwards receives her trophy for winner of the Thurcaston & Cropston W.I. Cup from David Snartt, Chair of Leics. County Council

Thurcaston and News from the Nomads Cropston Local History Society By Reece Preston-Hayes
There’s been a lot going on as the 2015/16 season is in full swing now, Nomads have a pretty good start all round throughout our ranks and as always there’s been a few ground improvements as well as other changes on and off the pitch.
On the evening of 22nd September members and visitors gathered in the Harrison Room for the first of our autumn meetings, in anticipation of our scheduled speaker, Peter Liddle, whose talk was to be about “Viking Leicestershire”. Unfortunately, due to the illness of a member of his family, Peter was unable to come on this occasion, but it is hoped that it will be possible for him to give his talk at a later date. Therefore, at short notice, Brenda Hooper prepared some of her photographic displays relating to local bygone times for us to enjoy seeing again, and Peter and Jane Smith compiled some brain-teasing quizzes to test our knowledge, not only of Thurcaston and Cropston, but also of Leicester and Leicestershire. There were questions about Leicester Railway Stations, famous local people, historical quotes, well-known landmarks/statues, anagrams to decipher and some pictorial features to identify. With some light-hearted rivalry as we divided into four competing teams, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining meeting, helping to broaden everyone’s knowledge and there was a prize of some delicious chocolates for the winning team which they kindly shared with everyone. Many thanks to Brenda, Peter and Jane for providing such a pleasant evening.
The Nomads’ first team has had one of the best starts in recent years, Rob Harris and Jimmy Withers the main men in control of the team, with Andy Wells often assisting in coaching, and of-course Russ Preston-Hayes remains as physio, and hopefully we will have no heart attack scares this year. As stated the first team have had a great start and at the time of writing, we are 10 league games in, sat 6th in East Midlands Counties League, we also have 1 & 2 Top goal scorers, Joe Hartopp and Daz Taylor respectively. Nomads also have their F.A. Vase run off to a great start after seeing off local side Friar Lane & Epworth, who have many connections to our club, including former players and managers. This year is debut of our U21 side, who play in the Midland Football League U21 North Division (wow that’s a mouthful!) The team is made up of an ambitious bunch of lads, who will hopefully bloom into some fantastic future stars for the Nomads. They came home with a win on their first day and then lost by only a goal against a tough Newcastle Town U21. Anstey Nomads are proud to be fielding an U18’s side for another season, again playing in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League, Northern Division (I dare you to say that one when you’ve had a few drinks.) At the time of writing, they have played two league games coming away with one win and one loss. They also travelled to Boston United in order to play in the F.A. Youth Cup, Despite losing 4-2, it was another step in the Youth’s development and we are very proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing them flourish in time. LUNCHING LADIES As ever, members of the Newtown Linford Ladies Lunch Club have been enjoying a varied selection of talks: sometimes serious, sometimes amusing, always informative and entertaining. In March we were amazed to hear what the charity ‘Dogs for the Disabled’ can train these remarkable animals to do for their owners, even predicting and diagnosing illness. In April we heard about ‘Mercy Ships’ which travel to distant shores where volunteer medical staff offer care that is otherwise unavailable to the local people. The May meeting brought us Graham Keal showbiz journalist amongst other things and an excellent speaker. He had many entertaining tales to tell of the people he has interviewed over the years. In June we learnt about Coco Channel. Then in September we saw how we could keep the colours going in the garden well into the autumn.
Council delivers excellent customer service Staff at Charnwood Borough Council are celebrating after achieving the Government’s national standard for customer service across the whole authority.
Our future programme promises to be just as good with Poetry, Victorian Christmases, Belly Dancing, Birds and Painting wild animals as well as a talk entitled the ‘Amusing side of Funerals’!
All council services have secured the Customer Service Excellence award for the first time and leader David Slater says it proves customers are put first.
The August outing was to Hardwick Hall with a stop on the way at McArthur Glen designer Outlet for a bit of retail therapy. Forty members took part and had an excellent day.
Councillor Slater said: “We have been working towards this for a while now and I am absolutely delighted that the hard work has paid off.
We meet at Forest Hill Golf Club Botcheston on the 3rd Wednesday of the month (except in December when we meet on the 2nd Wednesday). We have a three course meal followed by the talk. The atmosphere is friendly and informal. We welcome new members. If you would like to give us a try ring 0116 2304420. The cost of the meal is £16 and if you decide to join membership is £20
“We have put customers at the heart of everything we do as we want to provide the best service we can for residents. And even though this is a time to celebrate, I can assure residents that we will retain our focus and continue to improve.”
The Leicester Marathon
Councillor Jonathan Morgan, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “Good customer service leads to better services and I am delighted we have met the standard across all of our services.
SUNDAY 25th OCTOBER 2015
Victoria Park and various places along the route The Leicester Marathon is taking place again at Victoria Park on Sunday 25th October and LOROS, the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice is encouraging people to sign up as volunteers at Victoria Park and along the route.
“This is not a scheme you simply sign up to, we have had to provide a considerable amount of evidence that our customer service is first class and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work.”
LOROS, The Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice are encouraging volunteers to help them at this year's Leicester Marathon on Sunday 25th October 2015.
CSE is the national standard which tests the Council on five key areas of customer service including the involvement of the customer, customer standards, and how the Council can improve.
The event is such a huge occasion for the city and the Leicester Marathon always receives such fantastic feedback on the difference our upbeat and friendly volunteers make to the runners.
During the recent assessment, the CSE assessor praised the authority for its leadership and its people.
We are looking for volunteers to help with marshalling, looking after water points, handing out goody bags on the finish line, set up and much more.
The Council’s services have been working towards accreditation in phases and following the latest assessments, all 10 services have reached the standard and the Council as a whole has achieved the Customer Service Excellence Award.
You can also sign up as a team of volunteers or as an individual. To find out more please email: Debbiedickman@loros.co.uk or call: 0116 2318484 To register for this year’s Leicester Marathon, please visit www.leicestermarathon.org.uk.
