Newtown Linford Scarecrow Festival Weekend The popular Newtown Linford Scarecrow Weekend will be taking place on 26th and 27th September 2015. During that weekend, the village will come to life, showcasing an array of scarecrows, on display in front gardens and in our new ‘scarecrow patch’. In addition, there will be activities throughout the weekend, such as Morris dancers, our school fete, and stalls selling various items. The village will be buzzing with people, so why not take the opportunity to enjoy a stroll in our beautiful Newtown Linford and go for a walk through some enchanting English countryside. The scarecrows are on display all Saturday and Sunday and programmes will be available to guide you through the village providing further details on the various scarecrows. The scarecrows are judged and prizes are awarded at the end of the festival. The public is invited to vote for their favourite scarecrow – the programme will include a voting form. We would love you to get involved in the judging of the ‘people’s choice’. The local school holds their school fete on Saturday 26th September. On Sunday, the village hall will be the centre of the festival with various stalls and serving refreshments. If you would like to have a stall on the Sunday, we will be charging £10 per stall (£5 for charities) - and then your earnings are your own. Likewise, if you would like to advertise in the scarecrow weekend programme, please get in touch to provide us with a copy of your advert so that we can include it in the programme. If you would like to have a stall, advertise, or talk a bit more about the event, please contact Chris via email at chris@wroe.co.uk or Beate at beatehelmke@web.de (or tel. 01530 245198). We need to have final details from you by 8th September 2015.

We look forward to seeing you at the festival.

Beate and Chris.

Anstey W.I. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? No. It's Anstey W.I. members playing charades at their August meeting. Jubilee Hall was rocked with laughter as groups of W.I. members attempted to convey to their various teams (yes, it was a team event) the titles of books, films, television shows, musicals and songs without using words. Try it. It's very difficult particularly when a book has been made into a film and then into a musical. Arms were flapping all over the place, arthritic fingers would not stay up straight in order to indicate two, three, four or more words; knees would not bend low enough so that the member could not indicate whether a word represented something small; elbows would not stretch high enough to indicated something tall. The idea might have been to give clues in silence but there were certainly many grunts, oops and phews being heard along with the laughter around the hall. The W.I. is celebrating its centenary this year with a writing competition for the Lady Denman cup, the theme being what the President of a W.I. would report to its members in another hundred years time, 2115. One of our members, Chris Figgins, has had her story accepted on to the next stage when it will be reviewed by the National Committee in London. We wish her good luck.

Film Presentations

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” will be shown on Sept 11th and lasts 122 minutes. During the three years since our first “Exotic Marigold Hotel”, the proprietor, Sonny, has found a girlfriend on whom he dotes. Co-manager, Muriel, played by Maggie Smith, assists with the hotel expansion. The wonderful performances by Judi Dench and Bill Nighy are enhanced by Richard Gere to produce a hilarious but touching drama.

“The Imitation Game” will be shown on Oct 16th and lasts 114 minutes.

October’s film is set in Bletchley Park during the Second World War when Alan Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, amazingly breaks the Enigma Code. This film is a "must" for our cinema goers. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm.There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Thurcaston & Cropston Brownies & Guides Review Sept 2014 to July 2015 by Snowy Owl We had submitted ‘decorated plant pots’ and ‘animals made from natural materials’ in the horticultural show at Thurcaston. Some Guides and Brownies won prizes which were presented at our next meeting. During the Autumn term we were working for the Communicator Badge and learnt the phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie… etc) and used this to send messages with two-way radios. The Guides sent e-mails and texts to their leaders to prove they could use these systems. How is communication altered if you are blind or deaf? With the help of experts, we all tried sign language for the deaf and the Braille alphabet for the blind, and learned about life as a teenager coping with deafness or life with a guide dog. We interspersed badge work with cooking on wood fires (Guides only), a trip to the swimming pool, and as Remembrance Sunday approached, we welcomed speakers from Anstey British Legion with their fascinating photos and stories of the World Wars. We made our own poppies from felt and attended the Remembrance Service at Thurcaston Church. Luckily the weather was kind to us when we celebrated Bonfire night with fireworks, food and singing. For the Communicator badge, we were also learning Spanish words and phrases helped by a mum of one of our Brownies, but we also tried various Spanish foods such as churros and chocolate sauce, lemony biscuits and tortilla omelette. As we neared Christmas, we made very pretty Angels for the tree. We really enjoyed our trip to the pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, at Loughborough Town Hall and finished the term with separate Christmas parties including dancing and games such as, the always popular, Chocolate Six and pass the parcel with forfeits.

The girls had requested to ‘Put on a show’ so Brown Owl, was busy over the holidays working on our own version of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. The Spring term began with auditions and then lots of rehearsing for the girls. Costume production went into full swing, as well as making props and creating the scenery. We must not forget the help of several Dads for working the sound system, the video camera, and making a wooden cell to imprison Joseph. So the Spring term ended with our performance, to parents and friends, of a very professional attempt at Joseph with the Guides starring as the lead characters and the Brownies doing a super job as dancers and supporting chorus. The audience seemed unaware that there were only ten brothers, not twelve, on stage as the Guides had other parts to play. In the finale, a huge gasp could be heard as the magnificent coloured coat was unfurled to close the show. We started the summer term re-living the Joseph performance on DVD and pretended we were at the cinema by eating popcorn too. The badge for this term was Animal Active and the girls brought in and talked about the care of their own pets such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and even a bearded dragon (lizard). We learned about the care of horses and experienced grooming the horses Edward and Oscar and picking up the pooh. Thank you to Marion & friends at Swithland. On the hottest evening of the year the girls and leaders brought along their dogs and met at Bradgate Park to experience dog training with Lindsey from Animal Aid. We also took part in doggy relay races with eggs and spoons too. We also had various outside activities such as swimming, scavenger hunt and a cook out. Thanks to the work of Leicestershire Orienteering Club, the girls ran around the permanent white or yellow courses in Castle Hill, Anstey. The Guides helped the Leaders to collect £107 for Barnado’s. We started on crafts for the 2015 village show by making dream catchers. Five Guides, who are working towards their Baden-Powell award, ran a Pin the Tail on the Donkey stall at the Church fete. These girls also organised two Wet and Wild sessions for the Brownies and then the Guides, so that the term finished with water bombs, super soakers and lots of fun.

Want to Join! We meet on Wednesday evenings at Richard Hill Primary School, Anstey Lane. Thurcaston. Brownie time is 6pm until 7.15pm followed by the Guides 7.15 pm until 8.30pm Brownies start at 7 years old and Guides from 10 years. Costs are £25 per term, mainly spent on hiring the school hall, but in the Spring term we also have to pay an extra £25 each, the annual census, directly to Girl Guiding UK, in order to belong to the Guiding movement. We have spaces for Brownies, Guides and helpers More information from the following people: Brownies - Louise Keran 07711 422 350 Guides - Christine Miranda 0116 2364 293

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

Updates.

Police Special Campaign.

You may recall that the proposed planning application for residential development at 237 Bradgate Road, Anstey was refused by a planning committee at Charnwood Borough Council. Since that decision the applicants appealed, therefore this appeal will now be dealt with by a Government Inspector starting on Tuesday October 6th , lasting for four days. The venue will be the Ramada Hotel, Loughborough and will be open to the public. I am hoping to speak during the four days. After several concerns were raised about accidents at the Roecliffe Crossroads, I understand an in depth study has taken place to identify measures to improve safety. In a five year period investigated, there were 6 personal injury accidents, resulting in 8 people being injured, 2 seriously. Comments have been made on the proposed scheme, especially to reduce traffic speeds along Joe Moores Lane travelling towards the crossroads. I will keep you informed about the final measures to be installed when available. There has been a further delay on the Charnwood Local Plan (Core Strategy) Examination. You may recall, I gave information in a previous report about this being submitted to the Secretary of State for independent examination. The Inspector wrote to the Council setting out a number of main modifications that were required to make the Core Strategy sound. In June a Wind Energy Ministerial Statement was published and the Inspector now considers that an additional main modification is required to clarify the approach to wind energy in light of that Ministerial Statement. I will keep you informed when the Council have more details from the Inspector about the required main modifications outcome.

Information has been sent to me about this campaign, therefore I thought it might be of interest to understand how some members of the public could learn how they can help their communities and become a Special Officer within the Police Force. Leicestershire Police launched a recruitment campaign at the beginning of August to increase the amount of Special Officers across the county. The “COULD YOU” campaign is designed to encourage members of the public to make a valuable contribution in their community by joining the Special Constabulary. Specials are volunteer Police Officers with the same powers as regular officers and typically spend around four hours a week, or more, working alongside and supporting regular officers to tackle crime in their communities. The Special Constable has been around for decades and is a valuable resource in delivering and improving Police services to communities. Leicestershire Police hold regular information seminars which give people the opportunity to find out first hand what it is like to be a Special with advice from serving Specials. For more information on the role of the special or to register for an information seminar please visit leics.police.uk/could you

Have Your Say on Charnwood. Residents are being urged to have their say on Charnwood Borough Council’s services and the issues that matter the most to them. The Council has launched “It’s Your Charnwood Your Say” Residents Survey to find out how satisfied residents are with the council and life in the Borough. The results will be measured against the corporate plan to find out if the

Council is meeting expectations. The survey which is carried out every two years, asks residents to rate how happy they are living in the Borough, how satisfied they are with the Council’s services and identify what issues they believe the Council should be prioritising. Hopefully you have received information on this survey, but may I urge as many residents as possible to have their say, as this is an excellent way for the Council to understand what is good and where improvements can be made in areas that matter to you. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/survey or to ask for a paper copy of the survey, please contact the Council on 01509 634705 or e-mail communications@charnwood.gov.uk

Electoral Register. By now you should have had a communication from Charnwood Borough Council about ensuring you are on the Electoral Register, making sure that everyone eligible is registered to vote and can have their say in future elections and referendums. One form has been sent to each household within Charnwood Borough to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct. Any residents who have any outstanding questions can contact the elections team at the council on 01509 632593 or visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/electoralservices If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Chairman’s Visit. I thought it may be of interest to give information on a visit Joan and I made as Chairman of the County Council to the Civic Day at Leicestershire Children’s Holiday Centre, This is one of my charities this year whilst I am Chairman. The purpose built Holiday Centre stands on the sandhills of Mablethorpe about a mile from the centre of town, providing accommodation for up to 64 children. First opened over one hundred years ago, it is now fully modernised and improvements are constantly being made. A special path gives access to the beach. The Centre has been providing free seaside holidays for children of Leicestershire in need of a holiday, since 1898. Although the worst conditions of the early1900’s are now past, there are regrettably, still many disadvantaged children in Leicestershire who can benefit. Holidays are available to any child between the ages of 6 and 10 who would not normally have a holiday. Many of the referrals come from Leicestershire schools or Social Services, but anyone can nominate children for a holiday. If you would like further information about the Charity and if you would like to support in any way you will find the information on the website www.leicesterchildrensholidaycentre.co.uk It was a most rewarding day, seeing all the children having such a wonderful holiday, some I am told have never seen the sea before going to the Centre. I am pleased I made this one of the charities I am supporting this year along with LOROS.

More parents urged to take up free child care LEICESTERSHIRE families are being urged to find out if they qualify for free child care for their two-year-olds. The call comes as new figures published last week by Ofsted show that 66 per cent of county parents are taking advantage of the offer for two-yearolds – this compares to a national average of 58 per cent. Up to 570 hours of free child care are available for families if they meet certain criteria, and Leicestershire County Council is encouraging mums, dads and carers to use an online checker to see if they’re eligible. It’s thought that there are around 1,800 county youngsters who could benefit. The funding has been provided by the government and is designed to benefit low-income families and help parents return to work. The statistics also reveal that 94 per cent of three and four-year-oldsare using the free child care they’re entitled to, in line with the national figure. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Research shows that good quality child care gives youngsters the best possible start in life. “Although nearly two out of three parents are making the most of the funding, we want to increase this and are encouraging people to find out if they meet the criteria.” Parents of two-year-olds can find out if they qualify for by calling 0116 305 6208 or visiting: www.myearly learning.co.uk/ earlyyears/ apply

Anstey Surgery News Do you support a relative or friend who could not manage without your care? If the answer is yes, a new confidential support service can help. The ‘Carers Health & Wellbeing Service’ is working with Anstey Surgery and other GP practices to support carers. Their friendly, experienced team can help in all kinds of ways, from practical advice to emotional support. The service has been set up by the local NHS and County Council because carers own health often suffers due to the physical and emotional responsibilities they take on. Carers can be anyone of any age who cares for someone who is ill, frail, disabled, drug dependent or have a mental health problem. Such situations are so varied that help has to be tailored to the individual. Examples are training in lifting patients, time out to meet other carers, free flu jabs, specialist contacts, advice on accessing financial benefits. Young carers often spend 15-20 hours a week caring for parents or siblings, so their school work, attendance and social time suffers. Do you know any youngster in Anstey who might benefit from talking to people who understand their plight? Anstey Surgery can put carers in contact with this new service. Talk to your GP or pick up a leaflet at the surgery. Your GP can provide more regular monitoring of your own health needs and involve you in the medical support of your loved one. The waiting room at Anstey Surgery has a big range of leaflets about services such as this and also about particular health conditions. Take a look at all the leaflets, you will be surprised what help and advice is available.

SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN

September heralds the beginning of autumn in the garden with shorter days and colder nights, even frosts in some places. There is plenty to do in September though, with the borders needing to be tidied up ready for the planting of spring flowering bulbs which should all be available by now. Although I count daffodils and tulips amongst my favourite flowers I am always slightly sad when the greenhouses are cleared of summer bedding and are ready for the bulbs. However, hanging baskets and planted tubs should still be flowering well, especially if there are continued to be looked after by dead heading and watering regularly. Herbaceous perennials may be looking a bit sorry for themselves so give them a good tidy up and consider planting some now for next year so that they can become established before the winter. Japanese Anemones and Sedums should be coming into their own now. Keep harvesting crops such as beans, courgettes, tomatoes etc. Often this time of year there is a glut so get pickling and freezing! Pinch out the tops of tomato plants now if you haven’t already done so to concentrate all its efforts into producing fruit not green growth. Cut off the foliage of maincrop potatoes to reduce the risk of fungal diseases affecting both the foliage and the potatoes. It also helps to set the skins of the potatoes ready for winter storage. Once the corn harvest has finished cover your brassicas with netting to keep the pigeons off. Plant overwintering onion sets and garlic. In the fruit garden it is time to pick the top fruit if it is ready. Pot up strawberry runners ready for next season’s new plants. Clear out any dead and decaying matter from greenhouses to limit spread of disease and remember to try and water early in the day so that there is no excess moisture overnight now that the nights are getting colder. Now is the time to establish a new lawn or repair your existing one. Raise the mower blades as growth is now slowing down. It is a good time to aerate the lawn and to apply a top dressing. Consider feeding with an autumn lawn fertiliser which will encourage root formation.

Latest Borough News… A quieter month and I have managed a week away to recharge my batteries. I hope you have all managed some time away from your busy lives over the summer months. As the autumn draws ever closer, let’s hope some good weather remains for September. Don’t forget the Anstey Gala on September 5th.

The last public meeting held on 5th August 2015 was again well attended. We now have a good group of volunteers signed up and ready to run our library. I will repeat my plea that we still need more people to come forward and help us to keep Anstey Library open. Our volunteers are out and about working hard, delivering leaflets to as many residents as they can. This leaflet contains information and contact details if you are able to help. The training spreadsheet is also starting to be booked for training our volunteers. We are hoping to complete the spreadsheet at our next public meeting on 1st September 2015 at Jubilee Hall at 7.15pm. Don’t worry if you can’t attend this training, there will be training offered again. I have been unable to attend the previous public meetings due to prior Charnwood Borough Council commitments but I am hoping to attend on the 1st September. We have two group training sessions on the 7th and 14th September at Jubilee Hall. We would also like your ideas on ways of making the library building pay for itself, for example by hiring space, selling products etc. I know that there are some people who have been unable to attend the public meetings but would like to help us, so please visit us at our stall at the Anstey Gala, or contact myself or Phil Knight on: AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com, twitter: @AnsteyLibrary or go to the new Anstey Community Library website at www.ansteylibrary.com

Events On 23rd July I attended Leicestershire County Council Chairman’s Summer Buffet Evening held at Beaumanor Hall. In beautiful surroundings the Contrast Steel Band provided great entertainment and it was a lovely summer’s evening. A superb buffet was on offer and it was nice to chat to familiar faces and also meet new people from a variety of different walks of life.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Youth Cafe

Hello again everyone At the time of writing I am unfortunately      back at the Royal, hopefully it should be a short stay but I am available by mobile for emergencies only. 



I'm disappointed with the damage that has been caused to the youth shelter at Jubilee Hall as someone has tried to set it on fire; there were also broken beer bottles, graffiti and more damage in other parts of the village. If there are reasons why this damage is being done then could someone please let me know, the shelter was put in place to benefit the young people of Anstey so it would be a shame if it were to be closed, but there is a real risk that this might happen if the damage continues. On a lighter note, it's good to see Leicester City Football Club at the top of the Premier League, for the time being at least. England won the Ashes at cricket and Andy Murray secured another trophy. Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club won their first cup competition for 25 years with a tense win over Huncote Cricket Club (minus the pig) in the final of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League T20 bash. Only by 9 runs but we made it. We also had our President's Day which went well but could have been better supported locally. We lost the final to Asian Sports. Congratulations also to Newtown Linford Cricket Club whose tea ladies won the Best Teas in England competition.

and someone will talk you through it.

I have given my support to a £5000 grant applied for at Charnwood Borough Council to keep this facility going for another year. I am doing my best, along with Phil Knight and his helpers, to keep things going.

Victory in Japan Service I recently attended this special service at Leicestershire Cathederal to remember those brave men and women in Japan who's lives came to an abrupt end in 1945 with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Unfortunately, at the service I was feeling very unwell I must thank the kind people who helped me back to my car and safely home.

Rest in Peace Local man Steve Hutchins sadly passed away at the young age of 40, condolences to his family and friends. Also to family and friends of Paul Flannigan, local cricketer who was tragically run over at the age of just 31. Well done to Cropston and Anstey Clubs who are raising money to support the Brake Society in his honour.

Electoral Roll You should have received letters by now from Charnwood Borough Council to keep yourself on the electoral roll for the next year. Pleas can you complete yours, if possible, online; those unsure of what to do then please ring Charnwood Borough Council 01509 634546

This month's charity raffle will be going to the children's holiday home in Mabelthorpe. Cllr David Snartt Chairman of Leicestershire County Council will be there to draw the raffle and it is one of his nominated charities for his year in charge at County Hall. On Saturday there is a Community Day at the Nomads from 10.00am followed by the FA Vase game against Friar Lane at 3.00pm. From 12 noon onwards is the annual Anstey Gala, with a host of stalls, a bar and of course a raffle; last year's winning prize was £500! Hope to see you there. Back again next month.

Great Central Railway Past, Present & Future

A talk by Tom Ingall For the Friends of Charnwood Forest Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall on Monday 21st September at 7.30pm

As a result of a casual vacancy, Mr Clive Taylor of Station Road, Cropston was co-opted after a unanimous vote as Parish Councillor for Cropston Ward at the Parish Council meeting held on Thursday 20th August 2015. Clive signed his Declaration of Acceptance of Office and joined other members for the rest of the meeting.

The Great Central Railway opened in 1899, the last main line built in Britain. It was developed from earlier lines, notably the Midland, Sheffield & Lincolnshire (MS&L) irreverently known as Money Sunk and Lost!

Subject to there being no bye-election called, Council should be able to co-opt another Cropston Ward Councillor due to a casual vacancy at the next full meeting of the Council which will be on the 17th September 2015.

Between Leicester and Loughborough the GCR passed close to Charnwood Forest and encountered a landscape of particular beauty, including Bradgate, Swithland Reservoir and the tree covered south-eastern part of Charnwood. Our speaker will tell you much more!

Help our Hedgehogs DO YOU have a fence around your property? Then how do the local hedgehogs come and go? Now environmentalists are urging home-owners to cut several CD-sized gaps in their fences to help hedgehogs get out and about a bit more - to find more food, and to find a mate. Hedgehog numbers have declined drastically in recent decades. The population is thought to be shrinking by three per cent a year. Hedgehogs are thought to need to cover about a mile a night, but they won’t get far if they can’t get in or out of your garden. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society estimates that from about 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s, we are now down to well below 1.5 million (the number estimated in the mid-Nineties).

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 21st July 2015 to 20th August 2015

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 21 July and 20 August 2015 inclusive. The crime figures show that during the period a number of Plant Pots and Plant Troughs have been taken from properties around the village. This ‘trend’ appears to be continuing, with some hanging baskets having been taken the previous month. The Pot’s and Trough’s were full of flowers and would have been very heavy, so it is clearly more than one person involved and it is highly likely that a vehicle would have to be used. The theft’s more than likely occurred during the night, but we would appeal to residents for any information on theses thefts – did you see any persons carrying Pots / Planters or Trough’s at a strange hour? Have you seen any such items dumped around the village? One of the pot planters was a very heavy concrete item in the shape of a Swan that had been sat in pride of place on the owners’ front garden on Link Rd for well over 40 years. These crimes may seem trivial but they cause great distress to the victim, so I would urge all residents to be aware of these types of thefts and report anything suspicious to Police at the time it may be happening. If you think the theft is taking or has taken place then ring 999, or call 101 if you wish to pass any other information.

Did You Know? – A new Law from October 1st 2015 From 1 October 2015 it will be illegal to smoke in a car (or other vehicles) with anyone under 18 present. The law is changing to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Every time a child breathes in secondhand smoke, they breathe in thousands of chemicals. This puts them at risk of serious conditions including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia. It can also make asthma worse. Both the driver and the smoker could be fined £50. Calling all knitters! It’s time to join The Big Knit for Age UK

Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on nimble-fingered knitters in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to get creative and knit little hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit to help older people keep warm and well in winter. Now in its 12th year, The Big Knit returns and budding knitters across the UK are being called upon to knit miniature woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2016. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund their winter projects. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by the end of November latest to meet their challenging target of 42,000 and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go to make this a reality.

VACANT NHW SCHEMES IN ANSTEY I am very disappointed not to receive any offers to become NHW Coordinators for the vacant schemes that were mentioned in last month’s edition. It is very important that Anstey has a NHW scheme on every road. With Police cutbacks, it is now more important than ever that we try and look after ourselves and our neighbours. Anstey has a very low crime report, and is a very safe place to live let us all do our bit and keep it that way. Just to remind you all of the roads I am talking about. Balladine Road • Bradgate Road Broughton Close • Charnwood Road Long Close/Ruskin Fields • Falcon Road Charles Drive/King Williams Way Millfield Drive • Netherfield Road/Holgate Close I am very sad to say that Dorothy Poultney on Millfield Drive has decided to resign. Dorothy thank you for all your help and support. I am sorry to have to say goodbye to you. If any of the current coordinators who don’t regularly attend our meetings don’t wish to be their street representative anymore can you please keep me informed? Don’t just stop coming to our meetings. I have sent an email

out to you, but very few have taken the courtesy to reply.

NEW SCHEMES I have not forgotten my promise to continue with setting up schemes in, Gynsill Close, Arguile Avenue, The Pastures and Mill View. I will be popping round to see you very shortly now.

BRADGATE HOME CARE I don’t usually put anything of a personal nature in my article, but I would like to say a big thank you to the girls from Bradgate Home Care for all your help and support in looking after my late mother (Sheila). Special thanks to Claire, Debbie and Vicky, in making her last few days as comfortable as possible.

ANSTEY GALA Don’t forget the Anstey Gala is on Saturday 5th September. Please come and offer your support. We will again be having a fundraiser tombola stall, as well as selling crime prevention devices. Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society Following a fascinating talk by Ernest Miller in October 2014 about Stoneywell Cottage at Ulverscroft, it was with eager anticipation that a group of members and guests gathered on Sunday 16th August to visit Stoneywell for the last of the Society’s summer outings. This delightful Arts and Crafts style property, a relatively recent acquisition of the National Trust, certainly came up to expectations. We were conducted on a tour of the cottage by an enthusiastic National Trust Guide whose detailed and knowledgeable description of the property and its contents brought to life all that we had learnt from Ernest Miller’s talk. Stoneywell Cottage encapsulates the concept of the Arts and Crafts movement to reject the sombre formality of the Victorian era and to create a simpler country lifestyle, making use of local materials and the skills of local craftsmen. Stoneywell blends beautifully into the surrounding landscape and demonstrates the genius of its designer and architect, Ernest Gimson, who was commissioned for the work by his elder brother, Sydney. Given the nature of the site on which it is built, the interior of the cottage is quite unique with rooms on so many different levels and steeply angled stairs to negotiate – a certain degree of agility is required! The majority of the furniture is original with many pieces designed and created by Ernest Gimson, as well as some by his two collaborators in the Arts and Crafts movement, Ernest and Sydney Barnsley. It was a pleasure to hear again the story of the Gimson family and the origins of the building of the cottage. Since its completion in 1899, it has been a much-loved family residence, both as a summer retreat for its first owners, Sydney and Jeannie Gimson, and as a permanent residence for the last family members to own it, Don and Anne Gimson. The cottage definitely conveys the atmosphere of a happy family home. We proceeded to enjoy a tour of the gardens and grounds with another volunteer guide who explained about the overall design of the gardens which had been largely improved and nurtured by Don and Anne Gimson. During their tenure, the gardens had been lovingly tended, particularly by Anne, and detailed records were kept of all the plants that had been introduced over the years – these records have now been passed on to the National Trust to assist them in maintaining the gardens in their full glory. It was a delight to explore Stoneywell, both cottage and gardens, and would certainly be worth a return visit, particularly at different times of the year to witness the flowering of the wide range of garden plants, especially the varieties of rhododendrons, beloved of Don and Anne Gimson.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY, CROPSTON,

THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY Yesterday there was a very warm welcome for the return of Claire Orbell to perform Part 2 of her “Keep Fit Exercise Session.” Although Claire delivered the session with the same amount of amusement and enthusiasm as last year, there was more technical information attached to each exercise illustrating the importance and benefit to each set of muscles. There was no stress involved as everyone was just encouraged to do as much or nothing as they could. The Members did seem to enjoy the session which lasted for 45 minutes, which flew by with good humour. Following this, however, the afternoon concluded with the consumption of some gorgeous cakes in celebration of Birthdays belonging to Mesdames Gill Smart, Diana Whatton and Marjorie Sebastian. Not probably what Claire would have recommended following the Exercise session, but she seemed to turn a blind eye and enjoyed her cake nevertheless! A very happy afternoon. Our next Meeting will take place on Monday 14th September at 2.15pm when we shall hold our Annual Harvest Bring and Buy. Everyone will be welcome and it would be appreciated if you could bring along either some home produced items from your garden or your kitchen. (Shop bought goodies will also be very acceptable!) We usually have a lovely display which sells well and following this, we shall welcome Mr Andrew Parsons talking about “Farming with Wild Life” Any enquiries please ring me on 0116 2363467.

New Volunteers for Breastfeeding Peer Support Ten women have recently been trained to become breastfeeding peer supporters to help families give their babies the best possible start in life. The Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group is run by peer supporter volunteers who are fully trained in all aspects of breastfeeding. The new members have joined existing volunteers to provide information, reassurance and support to parents and parents-to-be at every stage from pregnancy to weaning. They offer one-to-one support, a telephone helpline, breastfeeding cafes, antenatal workshops and returning to work sessions. Lucy Rossa lives in Anstey and has a one year old son. She is one of the new members and explains why she did the training “I wanted to help others to overcome breastfeeding issues as I know how hard it can be without support.” Charlotte Stanton lives in Woodhouse Eaves and has a four year old daughter and one year old son. She is one of the new members and explains why she enjoys being part of the team, “Being a BRAS volunteer has not only taught me how I can help other mothers throughout their journey, but has also provided me with more knowledge & preparation for my own future breastfeeding journeys.” Joanne Talbot of the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust is one of the trainers on the course. She says “We have a fantastic team of ladies across Charnwood now, who have diverse backgrounds and huge amounts of expertise. With the support out there like never before hopefully every family who wants to breastfeed will feel supported even through any difficult situations.” Another new BRAS member is Fern Desbrow from Thurmaston. She has a young daughter and decided to become a breastfeeding peer supporter to help other mums – “Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience for both mum and baby and I would like as many new mums as possible to experience that. There are also still a lot of myths and stigmas surrounding breastfeeding, the correct information and support needs to be more readily available.” For more information about breastfeeding see www.leicspart.nhs.uk/infantfeeding and for more information about antenatal workshops and support see www.charnwoodbras.co.uk or telephone 07583 041054

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club August 2015 Report By Phil Vose, Chairman It’s been an excellent summer to date for Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club. The club have just clinched the 20/20 County Shield, hosted a fabulous Presidents Day and the first and second teams are having good seasons in their respective divisions. The victory in the 20/20 County Shield was a brilliant achievement for the club. The competition is open to all clubs in Division 4 and below. The team had to win 4 matches in total to clinch the trophy. They started with victories against Twycross and Hathern Old which meant Finals Day qualification. The 4 teams who won through to Finals Day, which took place at Leicester Ivanhoe, were Anstey and Glenfield, City Cricketers, Huncote and Great Glen. Anstey and Glenfield, captained by Joe Harris were drawn to face City Cricketers and they beat them relatively quite comfortably. Anstey and Glenfield scored 140 from their 20 overs, with them bowling the opposition out for 94. Ravi Maharajan was the star performer scoring 32 with the bat and then posting figures of 5 for 12 with the ball.

The Final was a lot closer affair with Anstey and Glenfield being joined by Huncote. A & G batted first with fantastic contributions from Anoop Jayaraj (36) and Taylor McMillan (33) to score 144 for 8 in 20 overs. Huncote started well but Anstey and Glenfield’s bowling attack kept Huncote’s batsmen in check with Anil Revu in particular bowling an excellent spell of 2 for 19 from 4 overs. He was ably assisted by the other bowlers to restrict Huncote to 135 for 7 and so Anstey and Glenfield completed a stunning victory by 9 runs. This was a superb

achievement for the club and the side will hope to build on this success in the coming years.

The club hosted its Annual Presidents Open Day on Sunday 19th July. The day comprised a 4 team limited overs competition with Anstey and Glenfield being joined by Appleby Magna, Asian Sports and Gracedieu Park. There were numerous off field activities taking place too with a couple of bouncy castles, a bowling competition, a raffle, face painting and food and drink. The club would like to thank the sponsors of the day, including Talent Cricket, Scott Langton Butchers and Sole Fitness and for all the donations and volunteers which made it a tremendous day. On the field there was some great competitive action with Asian Sports beating Appleby Magna in the first semi final and then the hosts prevailing against Gracedieu Park. Appleby Magna then won against Gracedieu Park to finish in 3rd place. The final was a contest between the home team, Anstey and Glenfield and Asian Sports. A & G batted first and made a reasonable 109 for 9, however, Asian Sports scored 113 for 4 and so won by 6

wickets with over 3 overs to spare. The winners were presented with the Wolfdale Trophy by local umpire and league representative, Robin Waite. In the league, both the first and second teams are having decent seasons. The first team at the time of writing are sitting in 6th place in Division 6 West. There have been some fine victories but also the odd poor result. The top batting performances have come from Anoop Jayaraj, who scored a fantastic 112 not out at Charnwood Old Boys and Ravi Maharajan, scoring a mighty fine 102 against Appleby Magna. They have been assisted by Joe Harris and Taylor Mcmillan making useful contributions. The bowlers have had to overcome numerous injury problems, however, they have been superbly led by Chemika Mewan in most matches. Chemika has notched up 2 magnificent 5 wicket hauls against Hathern Old and Walton-Le-Wolds. The 1st XI will be hoping to finish in fine form to finish towards the top of the table. The second team have enjoyed a much improved season from last year playing in Division 8 West. At the time of writing, they are occupying 4th position in the table. They have been some fine victories including against Aryans, Huncote and Leicester Ivanhoe, however, some poor performances when playing against Market Bosworth, Loughborough University Staff and Fatana. Captain Charlie Wilkes has led the batting line up in excellent style with the highlight being a superb 115 during the victory at Broughton Astley. Jim Pike has been the leading wicket taker, which included a great 4 for 35 against Aryans. The 2nd team are likely to finish in mid table at the end of the season. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Email amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com and Facebook page for regular updates, results and news throughout the year.
