On a side note, due to our first ever victory in the previous match and the narrow margin by which we lost our first ever match, we are currently THIRD in the running for the Harrod Cup on 'goal difference'. Report from Anstey Parish Council Community Speed Watch Anstey Parish Council have received over 200 signatures from residents of the village, agreeing that a Community Speed watch (CSW) is needed. It is now eligible to create a formal action group to run the CSW. All the information on how to do this is available at: https://www.communityspeedwatch.org. APC have agreed to help facilitate a group, volunteers are needed to organise and run it. Currently there are not enough volunteers to run a group. A meeting is arranged for Tuesday 11th September 2018 starting at 7pm at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road. If you are able to attend and sign up to become part of the formal action group this is your opportunity to do so.

Public Art – Long Close There was a good turnout of residents to see the unveiling of the public art at Long Close.

If you have not had the opportunity to see we would urge you to do so the mosaics stunning. We would still like to hear from more residents from the Davidsons estate at Groby Road about the types and style of public art they would like to see at the St James Gate estate.

Party in the Park The party in the park turned out to be a very hot day with people struggling to keep cool and scrambling for the shade. Our thanks go to the entertainment that helped to make the day a success include the Woolden Hill Choir, The Syston Brass Band, John Sutherington and the Busketeers. Our thanks are extended to the Stadon Bar the Ice-cream van and Charnwood First Responders.

Anstey Gala – Saturday 8th September 2018 The Anstey Gala is a great village event and we look forward to seeing many of you out and about. This will be an opportunity to talk directly to your Councillors we will again this year have our own stall and so do come over and say hello. This is also an opportunity to return your completed bunting to us. If for any reasons you are struggling to complete your bunting do let us know.

Council Work Over the summer months the council only holds full council meeting committee meeting cease. This is to accommodate the holiday period for both councillors and staff. The work of the council still continues and as you will see from the above events the organisation for these continues. We look forward to invite elderly residents into the Jubilee hall for the Tea Party on the 30th August. Background work for setting up a community speed watch is also ongoing. Groby Road continues to be a problem for residents. The maintenance of the area has been intermittent at best. The vandalism to the play equipment at the site has not helped the situation. The transfer of the land is delay by the drawing up of a legal agreement between Davidsons and the parish council. This leads to frustrations by all parties are the parish council are keen to have their own contractors and ground staff looking after this land as soon as the transfer has taken place. This transfer include the open spaces within the housing development, the allotment site, cemetery extension and attenuation pond. The extremely dry weather has slowed down the frequency of grass cutting around the village and planned grounds maintenance work at Mitchells Field has not been possible. We hope that you are enjoying the hanging baskets around the village which seem to be flourishing in the sunny weather. Parish Council Meeting will be held on the 7th August and 28th August 2018, starting at 7.30 at the Jubilee Hall, all members of the public are welcome to these meetings.

THE LATIMER PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATING LEARNING ARTS WEEK 18th -22nd JUNE 2018 What an amazing Arts Week we have had. Every class from Foundation up to Year 6 participated in different arts activities. Children drew, painted, sketched and used a variety of techniques during art sessions; some children developed their musical skills playing instruments, singing and even creating their own pieces. Other classes practiced their performing arts including drama and dance and the whole school came together for an assembly at the end of the week to share and celebrate some of their learning. The amount of work produced, and the children’s learning was truly enriched by the experience. Thank you to the FOALS at Latimer for their kindness and generosity to enable Arts Week to commence. Here’s what we got up to!

Willow Weaving

Every child at Latimer had a go at willow weaving, with Chaz Friend, the Willow artist, even though it was tricky, all the children persevered brilliantly! The little ones weaved a wand or a crown, while the older children created their very own fish or a leaf. KS1 children helped to create a creepy caterpillar and the KS2 children were busy creating a tree, with 4 branches to represent the 4Ls, that hold 12 leaves to represent our 12 Learning Behaviours.

Indian Dancing

paper by Penny Garner. Melted wax was used as a resist then finished by brushing dye on the top to create a beautiful batik. The children used acrylic paint to creatively use their imagination to create individual or friendship tiles.

Samba Instruments

Painting The Year 6 children loved being given the chance to try different mediums and enjoyed being shown alternatives ways of creating "art" than the traditional paintbrush and

Drama Class AF have had an excellent time learning drama as part of Arts week, with a little help from Mrs Jordon, a parent and a governor at Latimer, who kindly gave up her time, to share her amazing talent with the class. Mr Foote and Mrs Jordan was very impressed with the children’s perseverance and dedication.

Dance Fitness

Year 1 and 2 loved playing the percussion instruments lead by Manesh Patel, from the Soar Valley Music Centre. The children persevered to correct the rhythm, repeating the phrase ‘I like cream cakes’ and ‘I like melons and I like bananas’ to enable them to produce a brilliant melody when played together.

Year 2 and Year 6 have loved raving during ‘dance fitness’. What a brilliant way to wake up their bodies! Thank you to Racheal Hopewell, a parent at Latimer, teaching the children to be active and have fun by dancing to keep fit! The children said they loved having the glow sticks, as it really got them in the mood for dancing!

Music

Thimbellina

Latimer has been very fortunate to have the singer, song writer, Paul McClure, play his guitar and ukulele and sing some of his own songs to the KS1 children. The children thought of some very good questions to ask Paul about his music, such as, ‘How many songs have you written?’ The children also enjoyed singing along to a very catchy tune! The whole school even got to listen and sing with Paul in an assembly at the end of the day.

Class CJ have had their hand in sewing this week! Angie Webb, owner of Thimbellina in Glenfield, shared her skills with the class to create and make their very own puppet. Again, Mr Jameson couldn't help but get involved! Children showed their perseverance with the sewing and, I’m sure you’ll agree, they have created some fantastic monster puppets.

Arts and Crafts

Foundation stage and the Year 1 children learnt an Indian dance from the actress of the new Premier Inn advert, Kavita Vyas. Imitating the dance from the advert, the children enthusiastically picked up the steps beautifully and were able to perform their dance to their teachers.

Developing Responsibility; Caring about Achievement

Keeping within the community, the ladies from the Women’s Institute of Anstey came to show-off their hidden talents! Class ER and CJ enjoyed creating their CD fish, even Mr Jameson couldn’t help himself and had to get involved! The children showed great imagination and their creative side shone through beautifully! Preeti Sagoo, a parent and a governor at the school, taught the Year 3 children how to reduce carbon footprint by reusing different materials to create art. The children asked some interesting questions to gain further knowledge on how we, as a community, can reduce the carbon footprint to help the environment. Who would have known that you can create some fabulous art just by using bottle tops!

Bollywood Dancing

Year 4s had an energetic time learning a Bollywood dance, with the Moving _Together team. They learnt some amazing moves and routines throughout the day, and then performed their dance to the whole school at the end of the day. Just amazing! They also got creative by making a saree! The team from Moving_Together said they have been really impressed with the enthusiasm and collaboration they received from the Year 4’s.

To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only ÂŁ35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will.

What a way to end arts week than to have an arts gallery for all to see. Parents and carers all came to see the amazing art work their children have created. Many children have been inspired by artists such as, Keith Haring and Kandinsky. Other children have created some beautiful art work linked to a topic such as plants, in Year 1.

Next year we will be part of the Lionheart Academies Trust, working closely with other schools to get better outcomes for all of Leicestershire’s young people. Working at both Cedars and Martin will give even more collaborative learning opportunities for our communities especially with the opening of the Cedars Martin sixth form College this August. Exams have gone smoothly, Year 11 were fantastic and we are really proud of the hard work they put in. If you haven’t been onto the site at school, you will have missed the improvements to the learning environment. We have new windows, reception areas and over the summer there will be the refurbishment of our main corridor in the original school building. Post-16 Development

Our post 16 development is evolving beautifully; we have made drastic changes to our new post-16 social room with new furniture arriving, sinks to make teas and coffees with and superb decoration. We have also been collaboratively working with Kath Kelly at Cedars to plan the induction days in September and enrolment day on the 26th August at Cedars. Together we believe that every student has the right to broaden their horizons through not only education, but also extra enrichment. We have therefore recently sent letters out for the Sri Lanka trip in 2019 which Mr White will run. This exciting opportunity will offer experiences of new cultures and allow them to become well rounded, resilient adults.

'Boys Noise'

Five Year 7 MHS pupils recently had the opportunity of a lifetime when they were chosen to take part in a set of special sports and singing events, ran by the Leicestershire Music Education Hub. Cameron Arthur, Jack Coplin, Richard Dowsing, Dylan Garner and James Joy initially got the chance to go to King Power Stadium in April, where they were taught singing lessons by the stars of Voices 8. They also got

a personal tour of the King Power Stadium and even got to meet LCFC's mascot, Filbert Fox! Following on from this, they had another singing practise at Ivanhoe College, followed by a football training session two weeks later at Ivanhoe which was run by none other than LCFC coaches themselves! The Boys Noise event culminated on Tuesday 26th June, where they performed in a mass choir (made up of local primary and secondary schools) live and on stage in Leicester's De Montfort Hall - to a very eager audience. The event was a huge success and the MHS is extremely proud of our five boys who got involved and gave 100%. Well done!

Three Martin High School students, Ethan Chandler (Y11), James Oldham (Y11) and Rachel Yarrow-Hadfield (Y8) have being using their programming skills to show primary school children from Anstey village how to code. The students gave their own time to visit the village library on a Thursday after school to teach primary school pupils how to code using block editor for use with micro bits. This is the first stage of the program; once the pupils have achieved success with block editor our year 11 students would like to share their skills demonstrating the early stages of the python language. Once the pupils have the understanding of Block editor script, they will be shown how to convert it into Touch develop script, which helps with the transition to text-based programming. Learning through fun, a progression from using the micro bit as a temperature gauge,

mini games console or treasure hunt.

Social Action

Social action is all about empowering young people to play their part in society and make a difference – being proactive and supporting a cause they believe in. All year groups were introduced to this in an assembly in order for pupils to begin thinking over summer how they want to get involved in this during the next academic year. This is linked with the #I Will campaign whereby pupils pledge to make a difference in school and/or their local community. One of our focuses for next year is to improve the school environment and also to begin to do this in the local community. This will be pupil led by those in the eco club. After a recent informative visit to a waste recycling centre, the leaders of this club are passionate to make a positive change within the school and community and have come up with some initiatives for the next academic year. The pupils have the full support of the school and are hoping that they will also have the support of their local community, parents and carers. Further information regarding this will come out in September. The Warning Zone came into school to deliver their show ‘Crowd Control’ to Year 9s. This show all about e-safety was pertinent to what our young people experience online through mediums such as social media. Pupils were engaged with their unusual delivery which used to large back lighted screens. Pupils have come away with increased knowledge on the risks that come with the use of the internet, and are also better equipped to deal with issues that may come their way.

Martin High School Supports the Scouts We were lucky enough to hold the 40th Leicester Scouts summer AGM at MHS this year. It was fantastic to not just see MHS learners participating, but so many young people from our local communities. The evening was AGM business and then a celebration of the young people who had earned a variety of rewards and badges. The scouts do a lot of community work and support a variety of charities as well as offering a huge amount of different enrichment activities. David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

Planning Applications Update I attended and spoke at a Planning Committee meeting at Charnwood Borough Council against the planning application for a hot food and drinks kiosk by the Bradgate Park Trust. In my view, it was not in keeping with this sensitive area of the park. I understand this was in line with a report by Charnwood Borough Council Ecology which outlined objections to the proposal. One paragraph in the report stated: whilst acknowledging the small scale of the proposal I would suggest that impacts of the proposal in this location would include increased visitor presence and litter in the area around the hut, resulting in increased disturbance of the woodland and erosion of the rural character of this part of the park. In the long term the presence of the hut is likely to increase the requirement for safety related tree work in the vicinity. The application was approved with conditions. I remain of the opinion that this was not the best option for this part of the wood within Bradgate Park, especially when I read the findings of the Ecology report. I have been communicating with officers at Charnwood Borough Council about the progress of the application to develop 50 dwellings on land adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. I understand this is likely to be determined at the Planning Committee meeting on the 23rd August. I will try and make sure when this is confirmed the information is communicated to as many residents as possible. It would be good to see residents attending the meeting which is open to the public. The venue for the planning meetings is the Preston Room, Woodgate Chambers, Woodgate, Loughborough starting at 5.00pm.

Vehicle Parking, Newtown Linford I read with interest the views of the Bradgate Park Trust in the Parish Magazine, stating they again refute that the all-day parking tariff was

contributing to the issue of visitor vehicles parking on village streets, along with capacity problems at peak times. In my view, until the Trust recognises that these two areas are the root causes of this intolerable situation which is causing, in some cases inconvenience and distress to many residents. In my opinion, the Trusts’ assumption that this will only be solved by appropriate parking restrictions together with their subsequent enforcement is only tackling the symptoms and not the causes. Indeed, since the latest restrictions have been in place on Bradgate Road I have received information from a resident that this has now caused the entrance to their property to be blocked. I have stated before this would be the outcome, just moving the problem to other parts of the village. I have received e-mails, telephone calls and talked to visitors who have parked on the village streets, all giving a view that the all-day parking tariff is why there is a vast increase in the number of vehicles parked on the village streets. I have not seen any evidence from the Trust that contradicts my assumption. I drove past the entrance to Old John car park recently, there were more vehicles parked on the roadside than in the car park, some even across the footway causing highway safety issues, especially for pedestrians, I have asked the Trust if a reduced tariff could be in place to overcome this problem at this location, again they seem unwilling to try to resolve not only the village problem but also at the three vehicle entrances to the park. I do take issue with the Trusts’ statement that the introduction of cheaper parking tariff will lead to additional demand for parking. Surely if you encourage visitors to stay longer by having an all-day tariff you reduce the capacity within the car park, therefore less short stay visitors are unable to park, thus the increased problem on the village streets.

No Parking Signs I was asked by a resident if No Parking signs could be erected on the verge adjacent to the Newtown Linford Cemetery. I understand because of the double yellow lines on the highway, several people have received parking tickets whilst parking on this part of Groby Lane. After corresponding with the County Council, I am pleased to report three No Parking signs have been installed.

Woodhouse Neighbourhood Plan I attended the first committee meeting of the Woodhouse Parish Neighbourhood Plan. I am pleased that this project is moving forward, I do believe this will have real benefits for the Parish in future years. There will be a series of events and consultations during the process, therefore, I am hopeful that all residents will take a keen interest and take part as this develops over the coming months. One area that could be an advantage to having a Neighbourhood Plan is helping to establish how the Parish would like to see future development. I note in a recent planning appeal, the Inspector made reference to a Neighbourhood Plan when deciding the appeal.

Member Grant Scheme In the June issue of this magazine I gave information that Charnwood Borough Council had approved a Member Grant Scheme for 2018/19. Each individual Councillor has been allocated £1000 to award to community projects in their Ward. For my Ward of Forest Bradgate, this includes the Parishes of Newtown Linford, Ulverscroft and Woodhouse. I am still looking for community projects which would benefit from this award scheme, I can give the grant to one or several projects , the minimum being £250 and the maximum the full £1000. Changes to Bring Sites You may have seen the information that Charnwood Borough Council are removing glass and aluminium recycling banks at a number of locations including Woodhouse Eaves and Newtown Linford. They are no longer necessary as the materials can be recycled in the Council’s kerbside scheme. These banks will be removed in August or September.

We have had two travellers sites stay over in Anstey and one in Swithland. They were all reported to the Multi Agency Travellers Unit who dealt with the reports very quickly and efficiently. We have had some deer escape from Bradgate Park and they were found wandering around Swithland. We also had some cows escape from a field and they were found enjoying the playground facilities at the St James Gate estate in Anstey. On Saturday 30th June I attended the coffee morning in Newtown Linford in aid of Macmillan Cancer support; the opening of the public art at Long Close, Anstey and the Armed Forces Day in Loughborough. On the Sunday, I attended the Picnic in the Park in Anstey. It was a beautiful day, great entertainment and we had a lovely afternoon out with our dog enjoying his first picnic. One of Anstey’s Parish Councillors, Cllr Ian Grogan, will be running his first marathon in Leicester on October 14th. Ian, who is a member of Anstey running club will be raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Member Grants Scheme I have mentioned this in my June report but I have still not received any requests! I did not think it would be this hard to give away £1,000! Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) Member Grant Scheme is now live and money is being allocated already. Here are the details and the information needed to apply. Applicants are asked to approach their local Councillor(s) if they wish to apply before filling in the Application Form. In my Division that will be Cllr Sutherington and myself for Anstey, Cllr Snartt for Forest Bradgate and Cllr Page and Cllr Hadji-Nikolaou for Thurcaston and Cropston. Applicants are also advised to check the CBC web site before making any application to make sure that the Councillor’s grant pot has not already been committed to other projects. The budget allocation per Councillor is £1,000 for 2018/19. Applications need to be submitted before 31st December 2018. The minimum grant award per Councillor has been set at £250 and the maximum is £1,000. Applications can be made to more than one Councillor. Completed application forms will then be sent to the Grants Team at CBC, who will check that they meet the scheme’s criteria before forwarding the relevant documents to the Councillor being applied to, together with any comments and a decision form. The Councillor will then review the application and record their recommendations on the decision form. The Grants Team will let the applicant know the outcome, giving their decision and reasons. Therefore…I am on the lookout for community projects in my ward of Anstey, which could

benefit from the new grant scheme launched. All you need to do is contact me and tell me about your project. If it has potential, you can then fill in an application form on the Council’s website and we will take it from there. Charnwood Lottery Groups and projects in Charnwood are being urged to sign up for a new community lottery, which they are hoping, will raise thousands of pounds for good causes. The Borough Council will launch the Charnwood Community Lottery in September but are encouraging organisations and people to register their interest from 2nd August. When the lottery launches, tickets will be sold online and cost £1. For every ticket sold, 60p will go to a good cause. People will be able to choose to support a good cause which has signed up to be involved or for their donation to go into the general pot which the Council will use for community grants. If you receive your copy of Your Local early enough there are two information sessions being held on Thursday 2nd August at John Storer House in Loughborough at 3pm and 4pm. Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The garden consists of a terraced herbaceous border and rockery, flanked by a shrub border and two areas of lawn with a sweeping path leading to a two acre meadow with wild grasses, flowers and a wildlife pond, extending up to view point with a Shepherd’s Hut and seating area. There are spectacular views of surrounding countryside across the valley from here. Mrs and Mr West made us all welcome with refreshments served from outside the Hut. The group enjoyed a delightful sunny evening, good company, extensive views and delicious homemade cake!

Carillon Lace and Newtown Linford Handicraft Group Gardening Club We are a group of ladies and one man who meet once a month, usually the first Saturday of the month to work on our various crafts. Monday 17th September 2018 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30pm Frequent visitors to Bradgate Park may well have observed, over the past four years, fieldschools excavating various sites. These range from Stone Age remains around Little Matlock, to the Deer Keeperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s House, various sites within and around Bradgate House and in this last year the possible stable block. These excavations have been organised by the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester. In this talk, Richard Thomas, one of the project co-directors, will summarise what has been learnt so far, and present the results of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s excavations which focussed on finding the stable block to the south of Bradgate House, just over the bridge. Richard Thomas is a reader in Archaeology at Leicester University where he has been based for 15 years. Alas not this time, maybe by 2022? Raheed Sterling England’s second striker will have scored for the national team by then? Makes you wonder if Leicester’s Jamie Vardy went 26 games without scoring whether he would actually be still in the England squad. The British singles players nearly got to the second week at Wimbledon, and Jamie Murray, V, Azarenka Mixed doubles and junior 15 year old Jack Draper in the boys final both lost. Hurry back Andy Murray and somebody try and find the player that was Joanna Konta of 2 years ago. We nearly won the open golf as well…

Nomads New Team Anstey Nomads FC newly promoted to the United Counties league after last year’s runners-up spot in the East midlands Counties League, have appointed Tony Blanchard and Rob Harris as the new management team for the 2018/19 season. They succeed Nick Brett who as moved on to Oadby Town. The appointments have been made from within the club. First 2 friendlies the Nomads have been very impressive winning 15-0 v Friar Lane and 12-2 v Sileby Town. Promising but its early days.

The Nook car park, AnsteyUsers Questionnaire The Nook car park, Anstey is managed and operated by Charnwood Borough Council. The car park is a busy village centre amenity serving shoppers, the doctor’s surgery, business and local residents. There are currently a total of 81 spaces with 2 disabled spaces, 2 parent and child spaces and 15 short stay bays. An extra space will be made soon when the Glass recycling bin is removed in a Charnwood costing exercise along with over 70 others throughout the Borough. In 2014 the Council changed some of the bays to short stay to encourage a turnover of spaces for the benefit of shoppers and local business. The car park is still very busy, to the point where it is full on a number of occasions in the day time. This consultation is required for feedback on whether further changes to the car park are needed. For example we might be able to change the restrictions to help reduce the times when the car park is full. The information gathered from this questionnaire

will provide vital information to Charnwood Borough about who uses the car park, when it is used and feedback on how it is managed. The questionnaire only takes a couple of minutes to complete. Personally I think it is fine as it is, a number of the long term spaces are taken by those who work in the village, and I have never had trouble parking within the Doctors grounds. Pothole-related car breakdowns ‘at a 3 year high’ The RAC has found that pothole-related vehicle breakdowns between April and June reached a three-year high. The total of 4,091 call-outs was the most for the second quarter since 2015. This followed severe weather in February and March which saw widespread snow and ice. I understand that Councils are fixing a pothole every 21 seconds. However, only long-term, consistent and fairer government investment in local road maintenance can allow councils to embark on the widespread improvement of our roads that is desperately needed. Picnic in the Park What a great day, lovely weather, bit too hot for me, but everything was just right to spend an afternoon on the village recreation ground. Great entertainment from Syston Brass Band, Woolden Hill Choir, Buskateers and Technaudio Disco, plus bouncy castle, Bar, ice cream van. What more could the organisers want? Well dear Anstey Folk ALL we needed was YOU! But alas even though it was the best crowd we’ve had I was disappointed with the response.

RIP Sadly I have to report the passing of 2 old Anstey characters, Alan “Buzz” Bee and Ken Coulter. Both played Football and cricket for Anstey. Buzz at centre half and Ken centre forward for the Nomads and Town. Ken was fine wicket keeper/batsman. I believe Buzz was a founder member of the Savoy cycling team. Condolences to both Families and friends.

On the Road Again

Cricketers on track Anstey & Glenfield CC 1st. X1 are still on track to win division 5 of the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket league still 9 games to play but they are 2 wins in front of Kirby Muxloe. The 2nd . X1 are also doing well and lay 5th. in Division 7 West. With it being holiday period and the start of “We rule All” football we are struggling a bit for players if you think you can help us out please give me a ring. A memorial Day for Ryan Tilley of Cropston CC will be held at the Waterfield Road club ground on Monday 27th. August from 10.30am onwards. The day will consist of 3 cricket matches together with activities for children, raffle, bar and an auction of sporting memorabilia. Ryan, former 1st. team captain and male model was only 28. He tragically passed away suddenly in February 2018. The day will help to raise funds for CRY (Cardiac risk in the Young)

Yes, after a long tour of Rutland! And Anstey’s Picnic in the Park, the long awaited return of the Buskateers will take place on Friday 17th August at “The Linford” Newtown Linford. Admission Free. Vinyl Micky, Brian, Linda and Sutty will be on duty, plus any guests who may turn up, from7.30pm-Midnight. Be early or it’ll be standing room only. This time our charity raffle will be for SSAFA. (Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force Association) Come along and be educated? I say this because last time we played there I asked someone afterwards what they thought and she said “Well it taught me a lesson”

On yet another warm July evening members of Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society (T&CLHS) loosely followed the Thurcaston Heritage Walking Trail, taking a wander around some of the interesting places in Thurcaston based on the parish guide produced by the Charnwood Roots project. Our guide Brenda Hooper (Hon President of T&CLHS) provided extra local knowledge.

Starting in the churchyard we heard that the present church is the oldest building in the parish, with a Norman doorway and dating from the 12th century. An earlier wooden Saxon church stood on the site and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The oldest gravestone in the graveyard is dated1687. From the churchyard we moved on to the neighbouring Church Hill field where humps and hollows can be clearly seen, signs of the first settlement of Thurcaston. The ancient track runs down towards the brook with raised earth platforms alongside where wooden huts would have stood. Later, this field was incorporated into one of three great strip fields, before Enclosure. Across the road from the church is the Old Schoolhouse, built by Richard Hill for the headmaster of the Charity School. The present building was built on the site of the original school in 1875. A couple of the group recalled memories of being at the school, which moved from this building in 1979. On up Rectory Lane we went to the gates of the Grange, the former home of the rectors of the parish from the 1620s until the 1920s. When Rector Richard Hurd (later Bishop of Worcester) lived here in the mid 18th C he had the gardens landscaped. Through the gate down Brooky Lane (now a footpath to Cropston) we passed signs of another early settlement, some of us walked down to Sandham Bridge, the packhorse bridge, this is likely to be an old salt route, and would have carried slate for building from Swithland to Leicester and beyond. Latimer House, which dates from 15th C, has had a number of uses: as a blacksmiths shop; at one time Baptist services were held here; and one wing was used as a reading room with free papers for parishioners to read. The Memorial Hall was built in 1928 on land donated by Lord Lanesborough to commemorate the men who died in the First World War. The poppy window on the first floor was installed in 2014. A number of fine farmhouses were also pointed out as well as The Wheatsheaf Inn and the sites of two former public houses, the old Wesleyian Chapel and the old water mill. It all made a very interesting tour of the village. The next indoor meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston, on Tuesday 18th September at 7.30pm, about Cropstone House Farm. Thurcaston & Cropston Brownies, Guides and leaders earn awards On our first meeting of the summer term the girls decorated hard boiled eggs and protected them in squares of cotton wool and finally added a sheet of aluminium foil to hold it all together. We were trying to make the eggs exactly the same as each other so that conditions would be fair for our next meeting at Old John, Bradgate Park. Here we rolled the eggs down the bumpy path to the bottom of the hill and gave prizes to the first person with an (almost) intact egg. But there were mini chocolate eggs for everyone too as we sang Happy Birthday to Chris Miranda It took several weeks to earn our First Aid certificates and badges with the help of Brian from the Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) scheme at Rawlins academy. Although the girls had fun practising Stop, Drop and Roll as if our clothes were on fire, we hoped a more serious lesson was learnt. It was fun to practise bandaging heads and knees and tying arm slings and to learn to roll bodies into the recovery position. We tried CPR on the resussi anni manikins and learnt how easy defibrillators are to use as the equipment prompts you what action to take next. The Thurcaston and Cropston village show is in early September and does not allow us time to do the crafts then, so we made our desk tidies and pom- pom aimals this term. I am always pleased with the new ideas and talent that the girls bring to the task. We enjoyed good weather when we visited Watermead Park for the Brownies to climb up to the Mammoth and to look for answers to a quiz on climate change, to crawl through the net tunnel over the stream and to play on the dinosaur skeleton play equipment. Later the Guides tried out a specially prepared version of the permanent orienteering course in Watermead. Helping the leaders to collect the Barnados envelopes allows the Guides to fulfil some community service. The residents of Latimer Rd, Sandhambridge and Caudle Close in Cropston gave a generous £139. Before this

the Brownies had gathered in Jubilee Park, off Latimer Rd, to carry out a scavenger hunt and to use the play equipment. On the 27th June, two leaders were absent at a county ceremony where our older Guides, Molly Dawson and Lily Grooms, received their Baden Powell awards. The younger Guides and Brownies met at the Wheatsheaf pub and completed a trail of questions around Thurcaston. The following Wednesday fell on July 4th American Independence Day and the Brownies dressed up as cowgirls, the US flag, native Americans, cheer leaders, a film star and even a Statue of Liberty complete with torch. We learned about the Boston tea party and desire for Independence. We looked at the flag, the star spangled banner, and stood, right hand on heart, to sing along to their National Anthem music with its difficult top and bottom notes. The girls invented their own cheerleading routines complete with sparkly and noisy pom-poms. We tried an indoor version of basketball and, revived with cola drinks and pop corn, we did line dancing. Exhausted leaders had to do the whole thing again when the Guides turned up for their American evening.

Abbi Crisswell, and wish her luck as she starts at University. Chris Miranda and Irene Marriott (Snowy Owl) have completed 15 years volunteering with D of E and were invited to receive framed certificates in Buckingham Palace gardens where we met the explorer Dwayne Fields and were part of a group being congratulated by Sophie, the Countess of Wessex.

We have lots of spaces for new girls to join. We meet on Wednesdays at All Saints church rooms and sometimes at Richard Hill School both on Anstey Lane, Thurcaston. 6 until 7.15pm for Brownies (age 7+). 7.15 until 8.30pm for Guides (age 10+). There is no requirement for girls to attend the church, or RH school or live in Thurcaston or Cropston. Finally on July 11th we ended the term splashing about in Beaumont Leys swimming pool. We were almost the only people there and at 7pm the national anthem rang out to announce the start of the world cup football match between England and Croatia. Our older Guides, Lily, Molly and Katie, have

Bunnies Galore On the morning of Sunday 30th September you can attempt a serious 10K or a fun 3K in the beautiful Beacon Country Park at Woodhouse Eaves. Whether you run for the enjoyment of it or sponsored for charity, both runs are suitable for all abilities and are entirely off-road along woodland pathways and bridleways although only the 10K includes hill climbs. There is also the possibility of 4 friends running together as a relay team where no-one runs more than 3K but the team covers the whole 10K. Everyone finishing gets a medal and there will be a host of prizes as well as the opportunity for a warm-down massage. If you simply want to watch or to take the family, there will be hot food and drinks, and a play ground for the children. This one will be open to both men and women, boys and girls. As part of our 44 year celebration So come on why not be part of 'Everyone in Harmony' The free 'Everyone in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men and women young and old to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s with the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Jim Pollock participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part acappella harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn specially-commissioned songs.

For men and women who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
