Over 400 people came to visit Thurcaston and Cropston at the recent Open Gardens event at the end of June. The 22 gardens spread across the two villages included four opening for the first time and several returning having taken a few years off. The weather was very kind to us, which is not always the case. In fact, the scorching temperatures on Saturday sent many visitors searching for shade, tea, cake, ice cream, and even Pimms. Sunday was much more temperate; and many garden lovers made the most of a lovely day to visit the gardens. There was something for everyone at this delightful community event and many gardens had a little something extra to add to the show. There were books, cakes, jam, jewellery and craft items for sale; art to admire, lots of bargains in the plant department; classic cars to admire, a string quartet playing in one garden, and even football for children in another. Wildlife and conservation were themes running through many gardens; with opportunities for pond dipping and identifying moths, trapped the previous evening. Gardeners demonstrated how to combine growing vegetables and flowers and keeping bees with a child friendly space. The appearance of a clutch of ducklings on an island in one garden pond in the days before the event was another surprise attraction. The range of gardens open for view was very varied; from a beautiful Oriental themed garden, gardens brimming with flowers of every description, ponds, wildlife, greenhouses, and vegetables in plenty. Even a very new garden, very much in the planning stage where visitors were invited to contribute to an emerging plan. Come back next year and see if your ideas are in place. The event has raised over £2850 for Leicestershire Air Ambulance, our main charity this year, and other gardens have also raised money for a range of other charitable causes, including MS, and WI. So, visitors; we loved having you; we love to show off our successes and our failures too. We try to answer your questions and encourage you to try something new in your gardens. See you all next year, bring a friend. And, if you were inspired by this year’s gardens and feel you might be interested in opening yours, please get in touch: linda@tcog.org.uk

Report from Anstey Parish Council Updates -
At the June Parish Council meeting the final two vacancies were filled and Dave Parker and Stuart Booth were co-opted onto the Council. There is now a full contingent of councillors and we look forward to working together to bring benefit to residents. The new business plan has been adopted by Council this can be found on our website at http://www.ansteypc.org.uk https://www.ansteypc.org.uk/uploads/ business-plan-2019-2023.pdf This four year business plan provides guidance for the council on the projects they will be pursing, the finances associated with these plans and areas of improvement to be worked on. The Council will continue to be looking at ways to make improvements in Anstey. You views are important to us so please forward your comments on the plan to the parish office email clerk@ansteypc.org
Plastic Free Community - Last year we received a very interesting presentation from a young man in the village who was working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award. He worked to raise awareness with the local cafes and public houses to reduce the amount of single use plastics in Anstey. The Parish were impressed with this work and would like to build upon it. Users of the Jubilee Hall are encouraged to think about their use of plastics when they hire the hall for events. At the last Parish Council meeting the council agreed to work towards becoming a plastic free community. We need your help to work towards this, there are a number of initiatives that we are currently working on. Over the next few months we will be bringing forward new ideas on how to become involved in these ideas from thinking about how we can reduce the use of single use plastics to litter picks to clean up the environment. We would like to hear your ideas about schemes that could be brought forward. Food and drink related plastic items now make up one in every five pieces of litter. To help reduce the use of single use plastic bottles the Jubilee Hall will become a water bottle refill station when the building is open.
Re-cycling crisp packets - Walkers crisps are looking into the technology to create a bio-degradable crisp packet and have partnered with TerraCycle to create a free recycling scheme which accepts all crisp packets. The Parish Council is looking to work in partnership with the local schools and businesses as well as local groups to collect and re-cycle as many crisp packets as possible there are two dedicated collection bins, one is in the lobby area of the hall and the second is on the outside wall next to the noticeboard. Where you can drop off your empty crisp packets.
Summer Months - The Summer months brings challenges for the Council with more people out and about enjoying the play parks in the village. In recent years this has unfortunately been a time when petty vandalism takes place. This year the wall on the public toilets has been deliberately damaged and reports of motor bikes being ridden off road have increased. Please do report acts of vandalism to the police or the Parish Council. Update on Projects - The following are updates on some of the projects the Council is currently working on. Land at Groby Road - The transfer of land at the Davidsons Groby Road Development is still in the hands of the solicitors, this is a frustrating process for all involved and the parish council looks forward to this land being transferred soon. Relocation of the Bus Stop - We have been informed by Charnwood Borough Council that the transfer of the section 106 money is imminent. This money is being given to the Parish Council for the sole purpose of looking into the possibility of relocating the bus stop on Leicester Road. When the money has been received the parish council will be working in partnership with Leicestershire County Council to see if there is an acceptable scheme to relocate the bus stop to reduce congestion in the Nook. New Community facilities at Jubilee Hall - The Community facilities Steering group has met
once to discuss the needs of various village groups. The Councils favoured option to extend the Jubilee is currently being worked on, so that more information is available to see if this is a suitable option. HSSP architects are project managing the details so that decisions can be taken. New Peace Garden - A plan has been agreed by Council for the new peace garden at Groby Road Cemetery. The Council is currently waiting to receive costings for this work and hope to be in a situation to make a decision on how this project will move forward in the Autumn. Public Art for Groby Road - The mosaic art work for Groby Road is progressing. Award winning artist Julie Vernon is completing the art work that will be installed on the Green at Summerfield Drive when it is completed and the land has been transferred to the parish council. Neighbourhood plan - Anstey PC has decided to complete a neighbourhood plan as part of their priorities. This will be a significant piece of work and is expected to take several years to complete. This work cannot be carried out without the views of parishioners. This project is in the very early stages and if you are interested in becoming involved please do register your interest with us. Parish Council Meetings will be held on the following Tuesday evenings 6th August, 27th August and 17th September starting at 7.30 at the Jubilee Hall all members of the public are welcome to these meetings.

Ring Fence Your Assets Everybody wants to protect their assets for the benefit of their family and loved ones. We are all motivated to provide for our children throughout their lives and want what is best for them. Many people will think about or draft a Will hoping to ensure that the assets that they have worked hard for, are passed on to their children and chosen beneficiaries after their death. However, a Will can only dispose of the assets that you own at the date of your death and if the value of these have decreased during your lifetime, there will be little if anything left for your beneficiaries to inherit.
A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving the surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of the life. A clause can be added for the Trustees to have access to the capital at their discretion. There are also other Will Trusts available depending on your circumstances (i.e. Discretionary Trust Wills) Lifetime Living Trusts are specifically designed to protect your assets for you during your lifetime. Giving you the peace of mind that your estate can be passed on securely and intact to your loved ones, after your death.
Property Protection Trusts (Life Interest Trusts) can only be created while both partners are alive. Normally with couples the property is divided 50/50, though these percentages can be different. Upon the first death, their share of the property is placed into the Trust to be administered by the Trustee. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary and this would normally be the surviving children of the deceased. The deceased’s share in the property is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so even if the surviving partner remarries or goes to a care home.
After your death, the Trust continues to work to protect your assets for your beneficiaries. The Trust can continue to hold the assets safely within it or pay them out to the specified beneficiaries. The Trust is extremely flexible after your death and has the potential to continue protecting your family for 125 years from the date it was created. That means that all the benefits described in this document can not only protect you and your children but can also protect your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
What are the main reasons for wanting to create a trust? • Your wishes to be specifically set out during your life •
To prevent any claims on your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975 (Provision for Family and Dependants)
•
To reduce probate costs upon your death
•
To provide for beneficiaries who require assistance
•
To protect the trust assets from passing to future spouse or partner before/or after your death
•
To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should you die or no longer live in property
•
To provide the trustees to rent property im mediately after your death or if you no longer live in property
•
To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should they lose mental capacity (although creating Lasting Powers of Attorney is essential)

ANSTEY CHESS CLUB At time of writing (11/7/19), we played another simul against Shaun Cope last night. He is a member of Melton Mowbray chess club and travelled along to play us all. Aside from me, our guys all lost but Shaun was very gracious in victory, offering constructive advice where our guys played slightly incorrectly. Shaun beat John Whitmore, John Derry, David Buckley and Oskar Rudczenko (Our new 2nd team captain!). Shaun also beat Mick Squire in a two Knight endgame which was very interesting to see. I managed to scrape a draw because I asked Shaun if we 'Should go home' at 10:50pm and he agreed. Our thanks go to Shaun for coming to play us all. Website - Still a slightly sour note to report for this, unfortunately. The very generous and well received donation to the club by the people of Anstey bought a year subscription to the website - or so I thought. I had set up the website on a free trial basis back in June 2018 thus meaning that the period since then is still chargeable. I have heard nothing back from the web providers and I am currently looking at other options. Sponsors? - Is there/are there any person(s) or local small businesses that would like to sponsor Anstey Chess Club? We have a website where we can feature your company's website as advertising in return for sponsorship. Please let us know on the details below if you may be interested. Free Chess Sessions - We are still running informal sessions for beginners or slightly more experienced players on Saturday mornings from 11am-2pm, with the help of The Stadon Sports and Social Club. Please note the venue change - for now. These sessions are for anybody that would like to
Join the Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge at Anstey Community Library
learn to play chess, has some experience playing chess, or already knows how to play and would like to play some friendly games. These sessions are still free of charge and I would like to try and keep it that way. Wherever the Saturday Club is held, my services will be free. We are going to try the sessions at the Stadon for a while. Please call me if you'd like to attend or are interested in doing so, or you can turn up and play! PS- Bacon cobs for £1.50 on Saturday lunchtimes go a long way!! August Club Nights/Fixtures - We managed to beat Market Harborough on grade handicap and we are now into the SEMI FINALS of the Chapman Cup. We will find out our opponents after the Shepshed v Loughborough match is played tonight (11/7/19) but I will be on holiday for two weeks, so I won't know myself until I am back. We are at the Stadon every Wednesday in August. I will try to be a little creative on club nights so I have done time odds matches (where ore experienced players get less time against less experienced) and doubles nights - players are paired up and play alternate moves against the clock. These tend to be fairly hectic - but a lot of fun! There should also be another simul d uring August. Feel free to come and join us! You are welcome along on any night so please pop along to see what we're all about. New players are welcome along at any time - regardless of standard.

new six bedroom detached dwelling.
David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
Deputy Mayor I am now installed as the Deputy Mayor of Charnwood for this Council year, already I have had some interesting and enjoyable engagements within the Borough. I have recently attended the Rempstone Steam and Country Show which has supported local and national charities for over 60 years. This was a great way to travel back in time, seeing all these magnificent types of steam engines, which included traction engines and steam rollers, also miniature engines which are often scale replicas of full size engines. I can recommend a day out next year, I don’t think you would be disappointed, there is something there for all the family.
people receiving their degrees from one of the country’s leading universities, which has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research, strong links with industry and unrivalled sporting achievement. I am sure everyone attending, especially family members, were very proud of their achievements.
Planning Application, Maplewell Road Further to my note in last month’s edition about the appeal hearing for the proposal to build up to 50 dwellings on land adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. I now have the following update with the latest information. The hearing will take place on Tuesday 1st October starting at 10.00am. I have managed to have the hearing take place in the Village Hall, Woodhouse Eaves, as this is now a local venue, I would be very grateful if as many residents as possible will attend on the day. The hearing is scheduled to last for one day. Charnwood Borough Council have forwarded all the representations previously made by people to the Planning Inspectorate. All of these will be considered by the Inspector when determining the appeal. I am grateful for all the support and the time taken by residents to register their objections and observations to this development proposal. In my view, it will be enormously helpful if people do attend the hearing to show the strength of feeling against the proposal.
Planning Application, The Spinneys
I have also attended 8 graduation ceremonies at Loughborough University. It is always a special occasion to see the young

I now have an update on the current situation with this application. After contact with officers at Charnwood Borough Council, I agreed that this application could be decided by delegated powers and not be determined by a Planning Committee, due to the recommendation, was to refuse this proposal. The reasons for refusal include: The proposal to demolish and replace this dwelling is not sufficiently justified and would result in the loss of a non-designated heritage asset which the Local Planning Authority considers is worthy of retention for its own sake, and for the contribution it makes to the significance of the Conservation Area. Full details can be found on the Council website under planning application P/19/0952/2.
Planning Application, 80 Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves. You may recall a planning application for the erection of 2 detached dwellings on land to the rear of 80 Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves was refused planning permission by Charnwood Borough Council. I have now received information that an appeal has been made to the Secretary of State against the decision of the Council. This appeal will be determined on the basis of written representations, all previous representations have been forwarded to the Planning Inspectorate and the appellant. All new representations must be received by the 20th August 2019. Full details can be found on the Council website under planning application P/18/2464/2
Planning Application, The Outwoods
I have asked that a planning application for The Spinneys, Brand Lane, Woodhouse Eaves is determined by a Planning Committee. The proposal is for the demolition of the existing detached dwelling and the construction of a
Domestic Property Maintenanc ce
The reason for me to make this request, is that I understand the current dwelling may have significant historical value being built in the Arts and Crafts period. One example from this time is the National Trust property, Stoneywell in nearby Ulverscroft. I will keep you updated as this application goes through the planning process.
The Outwoods is situated close to my Ward, therefore, I thought it would be of interest to let you know about the latest planning application put forward by Charnwood Borough Council. This is to convert the derelict

former Ranger’s Cottage into a café and visitors’ centre. The building has been empty for a number of years and it is intended that the visitor centre would include a café, toilets and a space for displays. It would also be adapted to encourage bats to roost.
Borough Council are now looking for nominations for the 2019 Charnwood Sports Awards. The awards will again recognise the success of athletes, coaches and volunteers who make a difference to sport achievements and physical activity in the Borough.
I know many local residents visit the Outwoods, especially when the bluebells are out. They would have seen over the last couple of years the double decker bus café which has been very successful, thanks to the partnership with the operator. This new proposal would provide space for a café and more, it would also make better use of the empty building. The planning application can be viewed on the Charnwood Borough Council website under application number P/19/1281/2.
So if you know someone in Charnwood who’s sporting achievements deserve to be recognised please nominate them, I would be delighted to see people being nominated from my area. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday 2nd December. This is a great evening to be part of, with all the best of local sporting talent coming together to celebrate some fantastic achievements that have taken place during the year.
Whilst on the subject of a café, I understand that a new café opened at the lower end of the Beacon Hill Country Park on the 29th July. This Leicestershire County Council run café is fitted with an outdoor seating area and bike racks. The aim of the café is to go plastic-free in support of the zero-waste movement that is sweeping the nation. It is also the aim to become a hub for community events and recreational activities like cycling and hiking. The new café will serve a range of luxury hot drinks, light bites, hot food and snacks.
Sports Awards 2019 It is that time of the year again. Charnwood
To nominate online or find out more about the awards and the 11 categories visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/sportsawards or call 01509 634592. The deadline for nominations is 5.00pm on Friday 27th September 2019.
Grant Applications I just wanted to remind organisations and groups within my Ward that Charnwood Borough Council have grant schemes to help with projects which support local communities. In the latest round of grants, groups in Charnwood have been awarded over £20,000 in funding to support local projects. For more information about the Council’s grant schemes visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/grants.
May I also remind organisations and groups within my Ward that I still have funding available through the Member Grant Scheme. Please get in touch to discuss any possible projects you may be involved with which would benefit from some financial help.
Carbon Neutral by 2030 Charnwood Borough Council has declared its intention to be carbon neutral by 2030. The intention builds on the Council’s current work to reduce its carbon footprint which has seen the increased use of LED lighting, energy efficient heating systems in its buildings and electric fleet vehicles. The latest carbon management monitoring report shows the Council has reduced its carbon footprint by 32% since 2012/13, thanks to using less energy, more power from renewable energy sources and reducing waste. There is also a cost saving, in 2017/18 the Council spent nearly £139.000 less on carbon related costs, such as energy and transport, than in 2012/13. More information is available at www.charnwood.gov.uk/carbonpledge. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. The Latimer Players Need You
Fed up with doing the same old thing or just staying in every evening - have you thought about playing a character in a pantomime? Well, now’s your chance!
THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON
Once again, the venue for our annual strawberry tea was at The Blue Bell Inn, Rothley, where 25 people (members and guests) gathered for a very pleasant afternoon of socialising, while enjoying a tasty summer tea. It was the fifth year running that we had chosen to go to The Blue Bell Inn and also the fifth anniversary since the pub had opened under its current management, so it was a special occasion all round and the food and service were of the usual high standard. We shall look forward to next year! Our customary raffle raised ÂŁ58 for Club funds and many thanks go to Sue Wakerley for organising the event. On 12th August, at our regular venue of the Schoolroom at Cropston Evangelical Free Church (C.E.F.C.), our speaker will be from the Benefits Advice & Advocacy Service, to include helpful information you may need to know about the Benefits’ System and available support. On 9th September, we shall have a talk from Joyce Godfrey who will tell us about “The Magic of the Ballroomâ€? – a humorous and entertaining reflection on the pleasures of ballroom dancing. Also, we will have our annual harvest bring & buy. On 14th October, our speaker will be Anna Stasinska, whose talk entitled “There’s more to tea than a bag in a mugâ€? will enlighten us on tea tasting and the art of tea.
The Latimer Players drama group started in 1952 and has been putting on plays, musical productions, reviews and pantomimes in The Memorial Hall Thurcaston every year since they began. This year, in November, we are performing ‘Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates’ and we are looking for new members to take part . You will be given a very warm welcome if you come to the casting meeting on Wednesday 7th August at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, Thurcaston. Please don’t think you have to be experienced; none of us are Dame Judy or Hugh Grant, but we try hard and have a lot of fun. We need people to be in the chorus and to take on character roles. There are also back stage jobs to fill like making costumes, painting scenery and looking after props. If you think this is something you would like to try, please give the Secretary, Christine Deavin, a ring on 0116 2376855 and remember all we ask for is enthusiasm. As well as taking part in productions, we also have monthly Members’ Evenings where we try to do something different. This year we are planning to have an evening in an escape room, skittles, barbecue, theatre trip, Christmas lunch. Nearly all of these events involve food or a pub. We would really love to see you on 7th August and for you to get you involved. Oh, yes we would!

Districts to meet on the pitch after Couch to Goal programme Adults looking to improve their health and fitness have the opportunity to join a football-based Couch to Goal programme in either Charnwood or North West Leicestershire. The aim is for people to get more active by taking up football in a relaxed environment with fellow players of a similar fitness level. Organised by Charnwood Borough Council and North West Leicestershire District Council, two 10-week courses will run at the same time. When the programme is complete the two teams will meet each other in a friendly game, testing their new-found fitness and skills on the pitch! The initial sessions take place weekly at: Hood Park Leisure Centre, Ashby, on Tuesdays from 23 July between 6.30pm and 8pm. Soar Valley Leisure Centre, Mountsorrel, on Thursdays from 25 July between 6.30pm and 8pm. Cllr Deborah Taylor, lead member for communities for Charnwood Borough Council said: “We are committed to providing a wide range of events and activities to help residents in Charnwood become more active. “The new Couch to Goal sessions offer people a great opportunity to get fitter while having fun, learning new skills and meeting new people. I’d encourage anyone who may be interested to book onto the sessions and give it a go.â€? Zara Barnes, the course leader from the NWLDC Health and Wellbeing team, said: “We know there are lots of people in our district that would love to get fitter, healthier and lose some weight, but perhaps lack a little bit of the confidence required to get started. “Couch to Goal is great opportunity to get active playing football in a friendly environment with people in similar shape also looking to get fitter. “Sessions are relaxed and fun but we’ve kept a competitive element for the end with a match against members from the Charnwood Couch to Goal course, which will be great fun.â€? The subsidised sessions cost just ÂŁ2 a week. To book onto the Charnwood programme call 01509 632534 or email Samantha.chamberlain@charnwood.gov.uk To book onto the North West Leicestershire programme call 01530 454606 or email zara.barnes@nwleicestershire.gov.uk

It has been a busy month, but council work is starting to slow down now ready for the summer recess. On Monday 1st July I attended the Social Work Conference in Melton Mowbray. This was a day for all Leicestershire Social Workers to take a day away from frontline practice and focus on their own development and wellbeing. The day ended with the Social Workers Awards that were given to workers who had demonstrated excellent examples of casework when working with families. That evening I headed to Bournemouth to attend my first Local Government Association (LGA) Conference. This was a three-day conference with councillors attending from all parties and from all over the UK to discuss national issues coming up over the next few months and to look at innovation for the future. There is further information later in my report. It was with sadness that I attended the funeral of Mrs Jenny O’Shea on Tuesday 9th July after a very short illness. Jenny was the wife of Mr Ozzy O’Shea, who was the Leicestershire County Council Chairman last year. Jenny had spent the last year supporting Ozzy in his Civic Duties and they had only stood down in the middle of May this year and were looking forward to a well-earned break to spend more time together and with their family. On Wednesday 10th July I was invited to the Anstey WI garden party. It was a lovely warm evening and as you can imagine, plenty of cakes! I spent an hour or so chatting with the ladies and hearing about all their social activities they are planning for the coming months.
Highways Initiative Over the last five years, the number of highways related interactions with parishes and communities has increased by over 10%, however the resource available to respond to them has significantly decreased. £0.55m has now been approved and allocated for an enhanced highway service for parishes and communities for the remainder of 2019/20. This money will also be used for a detailed survey of highway assets. The reduction in resources has meant the amount of officer contact with communities and parishes has been restricted, resulting in officers being unable to attend parish meetings or site visits when invited. Two special project officers will be recruited to increase
12
dialogue with parishes. The proposals are to: ➢ Increase officer capacity to enable timely conversations with communities and parishes and sustain/improve relationships, effectively increasing the amount of contact with officers ➢ Maintain and improve the Department’s service delivery to customers whilst providing greater support to help communities and parishes maximise the opportunities available ➢ Support communities and parishes to take on activities or deliver improvements themselves where they are keen to do so ➢ Create the ability to be supportive without increasing asset burden for the Council’s future maintenance programme ➢ Rejuvenate existing assets which are considered low risk but important to communities such as edging back footways, and accelerating response times for tree and hedging work The proposals will seek to increase the speed in which obstructions caused by vegetation are addressed, together with providing funding to support local schemes such as Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS). The additional resource would cover works such as: ➢ Column testing and the installation of posts for fixed and mobile VAS units ➢ Working collaboratively with parishes to address engagement and enforcement regarding vegetation and providing additional resource to carry out vegetation works ➢ Edging back on the pavements in built up environments, including maintenance of any issues that are uncovered through this work.
LGA Conference I attended the Local Government Association Conference in the first week of July in Bournemouth. It was very pleasant weather, but I did not even make it to the beach as I was inside the conference most of the day and evening for the whole three days. It was a great conference with plenty of new ideas and plans coming forward and of course, plenty of cross-party networking. I also attended a few fringe events, and one that I attended was a ‘virtual reality’ (VR) session. This involved putting on the VR googles and becoming a baby inside the womb. For the next 10 minutes I was shown, through the eyes of a child, what child trauma
was, from hearing the abuse a mother suffered to being neglected by parents. This technology is being used with prospective fostering and adoptive parents to enable them to understand how children suffer from trauma and to support them in raising these children into adulthood. It was a moving experience and I was glad we were offered a glass of sparkling wine afterwards to calm my nerves as it was so realistic!
Household Recycling Centres On Tuesday 25th June, the Cabinet gave approval to commence a public consultation exercise over proposed changes to the Recycling and Household Waste Sites summer opening hours. The proposal is to reduce the summer opening hours by 2 hours a day to close at 5pm instead of 7pm, April to September. Winter hours will remain the same. The consultation on the proposed service change started on Monday 1st July and will run until 23rd September 2019. The report also noted that the service intends to expand the current permit scheme to accept commercial style fridges and freezers and the acceptance of car tyres and hazardous wood for a small charge. If implemented, the change to operational hours is planned for by the end of 2020/21 and estimated to save around £134,000. In addition, the introduction of additional work streams will save approximately £2,000. You can respond to the consultations on the website at: https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ have-your-say/current-consultations/changes -to-recycling-and-household-waste-sites To request a paper, copy please email Waste.Projects@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 305 0001
Traffic and Parking I am, along with Cllr David Snartt, receiving emails from residents about continued issues with traffic and parking in Newtown Linford. I realise that not all residents were helped by the elongated H’s put down in Grey Crescent but the many residents that have contacted me have stated that there have seen improvements. We are working hard together to try and solve as many of the issues that we can. The County Council undertook a traffic survey during the Easter weekend this year. We are waiting for the full analysis of the survey and this is likely to be published in September. As you may be aware, the Director of Bradgate Park Trust has resigned. The options going forward following the Director’s resignation will be discussed at Bradgate

Park’s next Trustees meeting in September. I suspect that with the parking survey and the resignation there are likely to be some changes made later in the year. I would prefer to wait until further information is available and further clarity is known before, we decide to take any further actions in Newtown Linford. I know this leaves us with a summer to get through, but we still need residents to highlight any issues they are facing with myself, Cllr Snartt and Newtown Linford Parish Council so we can continue to build up a picture of the issues the village faces.
Bradgate Branch Quiz Night A date for your diaries. The Bradgate Conservative Branch will be holding a quiz night with a fish and chip supper at The Linford, Newtown Linford on Friday 20th September at 7pm, the tickets are £12.50 to include a quiz, your supper and treats. There is also a bar available and we usually have teams of six people. This is always a fun night with many local residents attending, so if you would like a ticket, please get in touch with David or myself. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Deborah Taylor & Paul Baines… Borough Councillors for Anstey Latest News Deborah Taylor 6 Geary Close, Anstey, LE7 7LW Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Tel: 0116 2350126 - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor
Residents’ Surgery - We will be holding our next residents’ surgery on Saturday 14th September 2019 in the morning. We are changing the location for this surgery and we will be in the Nook Corner Coffee Shop from 10am – 12 noon. We hope that Edward Argar MP will be able to join us, and this will be a Borough and County wide residents’ surgery.
Co-Op Shop - We updated you last month in our report about the work being carried out on the old Co-Op travel shop. We advised that we have written to the CEO of the CoOperative Group and we have now received a reply. The CEO has informed us that they are undertaking remedial works to the building and this should be completed by mid-August. The retail space has now been let and they are hoping that the lease-holders will begin to re-fit the interior from mid-August to open the shop as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to commercial confidentially the CEO was unable to confirm which company has rented the building, but our details have been passed to them so hopefully they will be in contact. We are aware that there are several rumours flying around the village about the usage of the retail space, but we have not received any official confirmation. Gynsill Lane, Davidsons Development We thought we would provide an update as to where we are with this development. As part of the planning permission for this site the developers put in a variation to the legal agreement to remove all the affordable housing from the site and pass a commuted sum of £275,000 to Charnwood Borough Council to provide affordable housing elsewhere within the borough. Even though we fought against this it was approved, with the condition that the site would be

completed by 19th August or the 30% of affordable housing should be put back onto the site. We are concerned that the site will not be finished by that date and we are pushing Charnwood’s legal team to understand the implications of the site not being finished by the set date. We will of course, continue to put pressure on Charnwood to reach a resolution on this matter. Also, in connection to this site there was an approved planning application to improve the footpath from the site and to build a new footbridge over Rothley Brook. The footpaths have been completed but the new paths stop both sides of the brook just before the bridge, and therefore no work has been completed on the bridge. The understanding that we had was that the footpath improvements and the new bridge should be in place before any dwelling was occupied. A few properties are now occupied, and we have raised a complaint with planning enforcement at Charnwood Borough Council to investigate our concerns. We will update you on both issues as soon as we have any further information.
New Freedom of the Borough of Charnwood A Loughborough businessman has been awarded the freedom of the Borough of Charnwood in recognition of his service to the community. Charnwood Borough Council bestowed the honour on Mr Lez Cope-Newman at a special meeting on Monday 24th June. It is the highest honour the Council can award to a resident. Mr Cope-Newman is a founder member and director of Love Loughborough, also known as the Business Improvement District. The organisation works with town centre businesses and others to improve

trade in the town centre. He has lived in the borough for most of his life and has owned and managed several businesses locally. Mr Cope-Newman has also undertaken a significant amount of work to raise money for charities including the Breast Care Unit at Glenfield Hospital, Loughborough Beacon Rotary Club and also to support people with Down’s syndrome and their families. That work has followed from his earlier activities in youth work. The Local Government Act 1972 allows the Council to confer the title of Honorary Freeman on “persons who have, in the opinion of the Council have rendered eminent services to the Borough”. The last person to be granted Freedom of the Borough was Mike Jones in 2008. Paula Radcliffe was awarded the honour in 2004.
Council targets being Carbon Neutral by 2030 - Charnwood Borough Council has declared its intention to be carbon neutral by 2030. The Council backed a motion to aim for carbon neutrality at a meeting on Monday 24th June after it was put forward by Cllr Eric Vardy, lead member for the environment. The intention builds on the Council’s current work to reduce its carbon footprint which has seen the increased use of LED lighting, energy-efficient heating systems in its buildings and the purchase of electric fleet vehicles. The motion put forward by Cllr Vardy said the Council would aim to achieve carbon neutrality from its own operations by 2030 and officers would be requested to undertake a detailed plan of action. The motion acknowledged the need to

balance competing demands on the Council’s decreasing resources and finances and that further resources would be needed. It also said the Council would commit to work with residents, businesses and other public bodies across the borough and region to deliver carbon neutrality. The latest carbon management monitoring report shows the Council has reduced its carbon footprint by 32% since 2012/13 thanks to using less energy, more power from renewable energy sources and reducing waste. There is also a cost saving and in 2017/18 with the Council spending nearly £139,000 less on carbon-related costs, such as energy and transport, than in 2012/13. Trading Standards - Leicestershire Trading Standards is warning residents to be aware of phone calls advising of Council Tax refunds and requesting bank card details to be able to process the refund. This is then followed up by another call claiming to be from the bank’s fraud department, advising them to move money into a ‘safe’ account. Both of these calls are scams. A genuine organisation will never ask you for security details such as your PIN or passwords. Banks will never ask you to move money to another account. If you’re not 100% sure who you are talking to, DON’T give out ANY personal or financial information, even if you are told you have been a victim of fraud or a scam. The Borough Council will not contact you via the phone if you are owed a council tax refund. There are also various other scam telephone calls circulating, including one automated call claiming to be from HMRC and advising a warrant is out for your arrest. Please be careful and do not become a victim. You can also sign up to Telephone Preference Service (0345 070 0707) to stop unwanted telephone calls and you contact your phone provider who may also offer a call blocking service to stop unwanted calls. To report a trader to Trading Standards or for consumer advice contact Citizens Advice on 03454 040506. You can also report nonemergency matters to your local Police on 101.
Bulky Waste Collection - At the cabinet meeting on 4th July the cabinet considered a report of the Head of Cleansing and Open Spaces to consider the introduction of charges for the collection of bulky waste from households across the Borough. The report was approved and charges for all household bulky waste collections will commence from October 2019. The charge will be £20 per bulky waste collection (up to 3 items per collection) and there will be no limit to the number of collections per households
per year. It will be reviewed in 6 months to monitor closely to see if fly tipping increases. Most of the fly tipping we suffer from in the borough is not waste from households covered by the bulky waste collection but more general building waste, car tyres etc. The Council has also invested in mobile cameras to put up in fly tipping hot spots to enable more prosecutions. The change in policy also brings Charnwood into line with other Local Authorities that have been charging for bulky waste for many years and Charnwood is the last council in Leicestershire to bring in these charges.
Charity Girls Night Out - Women in Charnwood can enjoy an evening of fun and exercise whilst also raising money for charity on Friday 16th August. The Charity Girls Night Out is organised by the borough Council’s Active Charnwood team as part of the This Girl Can campaign. ‘This Girl Can’ is a national campaign developed by Sport England which aims to celebrate active women and encourage people to take up a new sport or activity. The money raised will be donated to local charity Living Without Abuse. The charity supports women, men and children that have been affected by domestic abuse. The event is for women aged 16 and over and is being held at Charnwood College, Thorpe Hill, Loughborough from 6-9pm. There will be a range of activity taster sessions to choose from including Konga, Boogie Bounce, Zumba, Netball Now, Yoga, Bangra Blaze, Burlesque and Bubble Football. Tickets are £7.50 and include a T-shirt to wear on the night. There will also be stalls available providing information on health and wellbeing or people can pamper themselves by booking in for a massage, body glitter or visiting the nail bar. You can book a place by visiting https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/this_girl_can or for more information call 01509 632534. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help.

The Charnwood Gardener
The Three E’s – Why Gardening Makes You Happy
Gardeners have always known that there’s nothing better for mind, body and soul than getting your hands dirty and tending the patch. And now everyone else has caught up – you often hear gardening mentioned alongside mindfulness, meditation and all those other attempts to cure us of our modern malaise. But what is it that makes gardening so good for you? Why would something that was once seen as mundane as doing the dishes now be considered a trendy, holistic cure-all?
Stay connected with the borough council Charnwood residents are being urged to stay connected with the borough council by signing up to new email alerts.
The scent of lemon balm is said to reduce anxiety
Exercise - One of my motivations for becoming a professional gardener was the appeal of leading an active lifestyle. I’d spent my working life sat at a desk, bathed in artificial light and barely having the opportunity to stretch my legs. When you’re in the garden you’re always on the move – you squat, lunge, stretch, lift. It’s like a gym workout but far more fun, and it makes your body happy. Entertainment - Gardening is a very engaging activity, and a busy mind is a happy one. These days the ever-present temptation is to stare at any number of screens – TV, tablet, smartphone – but these are all passive activities that leave us feeling unfulfilled. What better remedy to these attention-devouring devices could there be than planting a raspberry, attempting a topiary or pruning an apple tree? Enlightenment - You often hear the line that gardening ‘connects us to nature’, but there’s more to it than that. When we garden our deep, ancestral instincts take over (we have, after all, been gardening as a species for thousands of years) and we’re connected to our true (and better) natures. There’s contentment to be found when we’re doing something real and worthy. AUGUST TIP: Don’t underestimate the power of deadheading. Plants that are allowed to go to seed will finish flowering much earlier. Make it part of your daily routine – take your morning coffee outside and trim some spent flowers.

The Council has introduced the alerts to help keep people informed about Council services and news. There are a range of topics including general news, business, planning, events, recycling and refuse and news for tenants. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council and lead member for communications, said: “We’re committed to having open and honest communication with residents and these new email alerts are a great way to get information to people. “Residents can choose which notifications to receive and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to access information which may be relevant to them. “And we are not just broadcasting our news. We want to have meaningful conversations with people and that can take place either face to face, on the phone, on social media and we still happily receive letters. Your views our important to us and essential in shaping our services.” To sign up to the Council’s new email alerts, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/alerts
The Family Obstacular - a Big Day Out! BRADGATE ROTARY’S Family Challenge Day takes place on Sunday 15th September. The Family Obstacular or Family Funtacular will be taking place in a new location in the Charnwood Forest. Fun and Family are the key words, this is NOT a mud, blood guts and glory event, but something to bring out the competitiveness without the pain while raising funds for some of our local charities. Alongside the challenges, there will be opportunities to enjoy a day out with stalls, bouncy castle and food options. Not everyone will need to take part in the challenges to appreciate the day, but we suspect you might want to anyway. So pencil on the family calendar the date and watch this space for more details of the Family Obstacular on Sunday 15th September.

Another Successful Year for the Annual Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride Alex’s Wish, organisers of the annual Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride have just finished counting! The event which raises funds for the charity Alex’s Wish raised an amazing £7,611.71.
Zoe Edwards, Event and Fundraising Manager said, “This year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride was bigger than ever with over 190 people taking part. Our thanks go out to everyone who took part and raised much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. All funds will go directly to supporting clinical research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy a life limiting disease which currently has no cure and very few treatments. Our thanks also go out to this year’s headline sponsor - Glynis Wright & Co who was joined by fellow sponsors Bradleys, Jay Webb Consulting, Marshals, Cake Makers and United Carpets. Pedal Power returned again for the 5th year to provide all important mechanical support!” The event, which has become a Charnwood staple, sees cyclists choose between a 10, 20 or 50 mile route around the beautiful Charnwood Forest – home of Alex’s Wish. Added Zoe, “We really try to make this event inclusive and fun. It’s not a race and participants can take it at their own pace though we do get some cyclists who put in some amazing times too!” Hellen Jackson from Mountsorrel took part in this year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride and said, “It was a brilliant day! We really enjoyed it. It was so well organised and a beautiful route. Cookie medals at the end was such a lovely touch plus some wonderful bacon sandwiches and cakes too! I’d recommend this to everyone. We’re not cyclists at all but took it at our own pace and enjoyed every minute of it.” Next year’s event is scheduled to take place in mid-May 2020 and more details can be found at: https://alexswish.co.uk/event/charnwood-forestcycle-ride/

Could you change a child’s life in 2020? We’re looking for volunteer host families who can offer a stable, loving temporary home for children whose lives are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire) is a registered charity that supports Belarusian children from disadvantaged social backgrounds who are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Every year we bring children from the most badly affected parts of Belarus to the UK for a month of recuperative care. During the visit, the children stay with a host family and undertake a programme of organised activities that gives them plenty of fresh air, friendship, essential health checks and above all the fun they so desperately need. We’re on the lookout for enthusiastic, committed families who can provide a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child that will be placed in their care for four weeks. Host families will need to have their own transport and ideally live within 30 minutes of the charity’s day centre, which is currently in Markfield. John Buckby, Group Co-ordinator for Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) said: “Hosting a child is an incredibly rewarding experience and these visits do really change the lives of the children and the host families and volunteers that support them. “The next visit is planned for the summer of 2020 but there is lots of organising before then, so it’s vital that we have host families in place by September 2019 to ensure we can commit to bringing these children, so desperately in need of our help, over to the UK.” If you think you can help, either as a host family or as a volunteer supporting the visits you can find more information on our website www.focc-westleics.org.uk or get in touch with our Group Co-ordinator, John Buckby, on 01455 285799 / 07738 324947 or by email at john.evolution@btinternet.com.
Bradgate Park calendar launch A 2020 calendar celebrating Bradgate Park has been officially launched by Bradgate Rotary. The event took place at the Stamford Arms in Groby on 10th July. Those attending the event included outgoing Bradgate Park Director, Peter Tyldesley; sponsors of the calendar; members of Bradgate Rotary; and members of Leicester Forest Photographic Society, who took the photographs for the calendar. This is the fourth year that Bradgate Rotary has produced a calendar for the Park, sales of which raise vital funds for Bradgate Park Trust. The calendar depicts scenes from the Park - landscapes, events, wildlife and flora - through the different seasons. The calendar is available to purchase from Bradgate Park for £5. A Bradgate Rotary spokesperson said: “We’d like to give a special thanks to members of Leicester Photographic Society who took such great photographs, and to Groby Allotment Society, who supplied recipes inspired by locally-grown produce which are included in the calendar.”

The Martin High School...
“Inspiring to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.” We are Martin High School
Another Amazing Year As we arrive at the end of another year, we would like to say a huge thank you for their support. It has been a massively busy and successful year; being part of the Lionheart Trust has enabled Martin High to work with other schools across Leicestershire; access more university visits, share resources and join in celebrating the success of our learners. We received a ‘good’ grading in all areas of our Ofsted inspection and year 11 look set to build on this success with all their hard work. We have significant improvements to our buildings and there will be continuing work over the summer. There have been so many events, celebrations and enrichment activities; culminating in our new ‘Eclipse Festival’ and our traditional Bowline Walk and Sports Day to finish the term. Wishing you all a safe and happy summer.

Summer Showcase -
Thursday 4th July was marked with the Martin High School’s annual Summer Showcase event. It was an extremely successful showcasing the very best from Music, Art, Drama and Technology students. The evening started with an Art and Technology exhibition showcasing work from all year groups. The evening then followed with various performances showcasing the skills and development from our orchestra, rock band, dancers, singers and actors from Year 7 to Year 10. The whole evening was student led with student helpers on the door, refreshments, back stage and even our compere for the night was Richard Dowsing in Year. We are very proud of all our learners and we thank all of our wider community for continuing to support our creative arts. Miss Milner/Mrs Shaw – Creative Arts Team
Celebration Evening - The celebration Evening for 2019 saw over 40 learners across all years receive awards for their outstanding achievements and contributions. There was music and singing from a number of learners which enhanced the evening beautifully. At Martin High, we recognise the academic achievement and the personal development of our learners and the Celebration Evening as been successful at bringing these together. Next year will see many more of our learners develop the skills and attributes for success and we look forward to celebrating those with our community.
Eclipse Festival - Martin High had its first Eclipse Festival on the school field, and what an amazing success it was! Over 450 learners enjoyed the many events and activities that were available throughout the day. The dodgems, climbing frame, sporting activities, laser tag and various inflatables were all massively enjoyed by our learners and staff alike, the stage saw a variety of performers from our school including many bands and singers. Mrs Norman/Mr Williams/Miss Cook - Head of Houses The Bowline Walk - This event continues to be one of the highlights of the school year. The day saw many learners rise to the challenge of the 13 mile walk through Bradgate Park up to Beacon Hill and back again. The determination and resilience that so many of our learners showed in completing the course is what we strive for at Martin High. In covering 13 miles, our learners will have done just over 30000 steps! Well done to everyone! Mr Williams – Bowline co-ordinator
Mathematics -
This term, students from years 7 and 8 completed their final visit to De Montfort University where they have completed Mathematics activities. The students were invited to six workshops at the university where they were faced with challenging and in-depth mathematical problems as well as some teambuilding activities and the opportunity to learn about university life. The students rose to the challenge with many completing some very advanced mathematical problems and seeing some of the topics that they will face later on in their GCSE’s! Miss Watt – Head of Mathematics
Musical Instrument Exam Celebrations! -
A massive well done to Grace Davies 7A on passing her Grade 3 Piano exam and to Ellie Bown 10I for passing her grade 3 saxophone with merit. Well done girls! The hard work paid off!
Composers taking the floor - Each year, the BBC hold a composing competition for 14 to 21 year olds. They are allowed to write music in any style and for any instrument they like and then this is judged by some of the top composers in the world. The winners of the competition get to have their music performed as part of the BBC Proms concert series held every summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London – what an amazing opportunity! This year, we need to keep everything crossed for three of our year 9 pupils - Grace Richardson 9M, Naomi Mudzingwa 9M and Eden Carter 9A – who have all entered this competition and for Naomi and Eden this is the first piece of music they have composed too. Good luck girls! We all have everything crossed for you!
Sweeney Todd - auditions and places awarded -
Huge congratulations to Amelie Poulten 7I, Grace Richardson 9M and Amelia Ward 10A for taking part in the auditions for a production of Sweeney Todd in November 2019 at the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester. There were hundreds of auditions, so all three of our pupils getting a place is just incredible - well done girls! If you want to catch them in the performances on 20th – 23rd November 2019, please do check out the Haymarket Theatre website https://www.haytheatre.com/whatson/sweeney-todd Mrs Shaw – Head of Music

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Each summer, Leicester University runs a Field School to give experience of a real archaeological dig to its own students and to visiting students from around the world. This year’s dig was the fifth and final one to take place at Bradgate Park and on a pleasant evening at the end of June some of our members were shown round by the codirector of the project, Dr Richard Thomas. As we walked to the site, Richard reminded us of some of the project’s findings from previous years. First, the site of a late Palaeolithic camp, where flint tools were made by hunters returning to Britain at the end of the last Ice Age. Then a moated enclosure containing the foundations of a large hall, which is now thought to have been too grand for a warden’s residence and was probably an early medieval hunting lodge. Last year’s dig revealed many new features of the 17th century stable but they are still waiting for a more detailed evaluation. This year, several trenches have been opened up inside the ruins of Bradgate House, in particular to investigate an older stone building that sits at a slightly oblique angle within the courtyard. It turns out that the stone walls are quite extensive and, as they are cut through by the brickwork that we see standing today, they indicate that a substantial stone building previously stood on the same site. Several good finds from the Tudor period have been unearthed in the various rooms of the building, including a candlestick and some lead piping. (The team were still searching for the rest of the Cluedo set.) The dates of the finds suggest that the stone building remained in use during the 1540s, which raises the question: could this in fact have been the house in which Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554) grew up? If so, then the familiar brick buildings including the Chapel, Great Hall and “Lady Jane’s Tower might have been added only later, when Bradgate was restored to the Grey family towards the end of the century. More investigation is needed! Our Society’s next event will be a gentle heritage walk around Cropston. Meet outside the Badger’s Sett at 7.00pm on Tuesday 20th August. All are welcome (no charge). www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

Ruffle comes home! An exciting invitation arrived in Ruffle’s kennel recently from the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire. Together with author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves, Ruffle will be appearing at the GCR’s Family Fun event at Rothley Station on August 24th, 25th and 26th. Visitors to the event can meet Ruffle and enjoy an interactive performance of some of his adventures brought to life with puppets and props including an incredible model train called ‘The Flying Terrier’! The Ruffle stories were inspired by Rachel’s love of Airedales combined with knowledge from her two children who have worked on the GCR. Readers of the books will recognise some of the storylines and illustrations if they have visited the GCR.

Rachel explained just how excited both she and Ruffle are to be visiting the places that inspired the series of adventures. ‘The events in the stories are believable because they have happened or readers can imagine them happening. Keen-eyed readers will spot that the little station where Eric the station master works could well be Rothley. There’s also an illustration of the stone bridge that carries the trains over the Swithland Reservoir. Ruffle and I are really looking forward to sharing his adventures in the place where they were imagined as happening – it’s as if Ruffle was coming home!’ The event will include activities and storytelling at stations along the GCR – fantastic fun whilst encouraging reading! Since self-publishing the first of her series of Ruffle stories just over 3 years ago, Rachel has sold over 9500 books. As an English and Drama teacher it was only natural that Rachel adapted some of the stories into assembly performances using puppets and props to • Landscaping specialist • Driveways promote reading, • Patio and paths • Fencing and gates • 7XUƓQJ writing and a love of imagination. Over 100 primary 01509 839694 or 0116 2364410 schools have Mobile 07792645878 enjoyed sharing in Ruffle’s adventures so far.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club July Evening Visit to Barkby Hall Barkby Hall was the delightful venue for the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Summer Evening visit. The historic, grade 2 listed Barkby Hall is home and seat of the Pochin family since 1604.

of the house. The garden boasts a large kitchen garden, carefully laid out with strawberries, onions, brassicas, potatoes and other veg. The walls of the garden form a very sheltered environment for fruit and other climbing plants. Recent developments in the garden include some carefully placed pieces of sculpture in a circular area of sensory plants and flowers. This is the final touch to a plan conceived originally by the current owner’s late mother and detailed in her garden diaries. The garden has a large clear pond, fed by a metal rill, with three pieces of sculpture in polished stone and metal, sitting in a new bed of hostas. The pieces reflect the architecture of the nearby local church. Over 50 members and visitors attended the visit, enjoying the extensive garden and the hospitality of the Pochin family, who made us most welcome. This was a delightful summer evening.

How to achieve the distinctive style that uses informal design, traditional materials, dense planting and a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. They are essentially English in origin dating back centuries, the ideal ‘cottage garden’ has ‘grace and charm’ and should be ‘homely and functional’. Tony will help us to achieve that much sort after look.
Saturday 7 September 36th Annual Craft, and Produce Show (Open to all) This year we have subtitled the Annual Show the “Have-a-Go” Show, because that is what we are asking potential exhibitors to do. This is aimed primarily at ‘new to showing’ exhibitors. There are eight classes in total and you can choose just one or two, or indeed all eight. There’s a trophy to be won after all. It’s a fun day and how better to top it off by taking home the satisfaction of being a winner or maybe even a trophy.

The Pochin family were the hosts, opening their beautiful and extensive garden for the garden club members to enjoy on a balmy summer evening. Hidden behind the ancient walls of the house and grounds is a truly magnificent garden. The club members enjoyed wandering through rose laden arches and admiring the garden borders, especially some very statuesque delphiniums. There is a dry Japanese type garden, nestling in the corner
