On the morning of 3rd March 2014 at Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey Georgie Budding will be getting her pony tail cut off and then shaving her head in order to raise funds for research into the biggest cancer killer of UK children - Brain Tumours.

The pony tail will be sent to the Little Princesses Trust to be made into wigs for children suffering the side effects of cancer treatment and the funds raised are being sent to Ellie's Fund Brain Tumour Trust - a charity I do a lot for - who will send it over to the brain tumour research laboratory in Leeds. Her total currently stands at just under ÂŁ1200 so far and she is aiming to raise as much as possible for this very worthwhile cause.

There will be cake and cuppas for sale in the morning between 9.30 Head shaving

and 12pm and we will have a few stands selling some bits and bobs and

a raffle as well to try and raise even more for the charity. Everyone is

Charnwood offers help for heroes A NEW Armed Forces Champion has been appointed in Charnwood to support the brave men and women who have fought for our country. Councillor Hilary Fryer, a former officer in the WRAF, will act as the driving force behind a package of support which will be offered to Armed Forces personnel and their families.

She was appointed after the Council’s Cabinet approved an Armed Forces Community Covenant which sets out a package of support including: • Discount corporate membership at Charnwood’s three leisure centres • Provide the most up-to-date advice and support to injured personnel who resettle in Charnwood • Personnel will not be disadvantaged by a requirement to have a local connection to qualify for inclusion on our housing register • Signpost personnel and their families to community services • Working closely with Charnwood Together to widen the impact of the Covenant • Meet annually with Armed Forces representatives to review the progress of the Covenant Cllr Fryer said: “I’m honoured to become the Council’s Armed Forces Champion. My father served in the Army for nearly 35 years so I was born into ‘Army life’.

“I understand the difficulties and pressures put on service personnel and their families. We had many moves and I attended many different schools in England and abroad.

“This did not put me off and I did become an officer in the Womens’ Royal Air Force. So I shall be working hard to ensure that members of the forces are given the extra help they need when returning to civilian life.

“The Council already recognizes, in a number of ways, the extraordinary sacrifices made by Armed Forces personnel.

“It is only right that we take that recognition further by giving a little more extra help and support to a small group of people who have sacrificed such a lot for so many.”

WOOLDEN HILL NEWS Mrs Knight the Family Outreach Worker organised a series of Maths Workshops for parents and grandparents towards the end of last term. They aimed to help parents understand how maths is taught in school now. The workshops were run by a tutor from Leicester College and were very well supported.

Feedback from one grandparent was “I would advise any parent/grandparent to take part in this workshop. I t gives you the confidence to work with your child/grandchild knowing that you are teaching them in the correct way.”

This term started with an exciting new venture, the opening of our Breakfast Club. The Club has been well attended during the first two weeks of term and the children enjoy playing table tennis and games in addition to having their breakfast.

Children in Year 3 have been given the opportunity to have a professional dance tutor in to run a Jumptoitdance session. They will be practising routines and will then take part in a performance at a Dance Festival at Longslade Community College along with other schools We are once again collecting the Sainsburys Active Kids vouchers. Please send them in to the School Office.

Last year we were able to purchase several items of new sports equipment and it would be good to do the same again this year.

We started our entertainment with Nigel on the accordian doing a great sing a long, Sean then did some stand up comedy and great magic tricks both on stage and around the tables, and last but not least Dave and Kev with some musical entertainment.

Julie, Matt and I would like to thank all the volunteers who came forward to help both prior to the day and on the day whether that be the initial planning, securing funds, setting up the room, wrapping presents, putting up posters, baking (lovely mince pies and fantastic Christmas cake were donated), providing transport, sitting with the guests interacting and serving them, and most definitely a massive thanks to Julie and all her team for organising, buying and cooking such a wonderful meal on the day (something I definitely do not get involved with as cooking is not my strong point!!).

Have a clear-out with Freeuse Anyone having a January clear-out can recycle old and unwanted items via a free give and take website. www.freeuseit.org enables Leicester and Leicestershire residents to upload items they no longer want - and for others to claim them and take them home for free.

Run by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, district and borough councils and supported by Leicester City Council, the website has enabled more than 170 tonnes of waste to be diverted from landfill since it was set up in December 2009.

Pam Posnett, chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: “It often makes sense to have a January clear-out to get rid of old and unwanted items and make way for the new festive gifts.

A massive thanks also to Next for a very generous donation of £250 and a lovely present for each guest, Anstey Parish council for their donation of £200, Kirby Free Church for £150, Age UK for donations of food, and to other companies who helped in some way, Aldi, Midlands Co-op, Sainsburys, Forget-me-knot Anstey, Greens surveyors – Anstey, Cotts beverages, Jacobs bakeries and Boots. Thanks also to St Marys Church, Anstey who although they did have to make a charge this year don’t charge anywhere near the the full amount for hiring the room and without the room this couldn’t go ahead so thanks very much for the use of the room once again.

Thanks also to all those people, many of who remained anon who donated money, we had various amounts in envelopes through ours or Julies door or given direct to the parish council as our funds are with them (thanks to Liz in the parish council for all her help too). Many guests and helpers also donated money on the day as well.

We do hope to be able to do this again in 2014 dependant on enough volunteers, finance etc.. however we were definitely about at capacity for numbers this year so places may have to be limited somehow next year. If anyone knows of anyone else doing this in north Leicestershire (I only know of the salvation army in South Wigston which is a bit far and I think they are about at capacity as well) please contact me so that thinking ahead if we do reach capacity it would be nice to be able to offer people somewhere else to go.

BT Sport Search For A New Young FA Cup Presenter

January's Danish romantic comedy, "Love is all you need", featured beautiful scenes on the Italian Sorrento Peninsula. Trine Dyrhollm & Pierce Brosnan shared an exciting magnetism for one another. This was an excellent film to begin our presentations this year.

BT Sport has launched a search for youth sports TV presenting talent, unveiling its BT Sport Young FA Cup Presenter of the Year competition.

Live now on btsport.com, the competition will present the winner with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of being part of BT Sport’s live FA Cup Final TV coverage on May 17. On FA Cup Final day from London’s Wembley stadium, the winner will film a segment for BT Sport’s broadcast of that match alongside BT Sport’s lead football anchor Jake Humphrey.

“The Great Gadsby” will be shown on Friday February 14th and lasts 143 minutes.

He or she will also get to bring their family or friends to the big occasion and watch the match courtesy of BT Sport. Runners-up prizes include FA Cup semi-final tickets and football shirts signed by the BT Sport presenting team.

To enter, contestants - open to UK residents aged 13 to 16 years old - simply need to shoot and record an original, one minute, single-camera-shot of themselves presenting a news report around the 2013/14 FA Cup. Entries can be shot using a smartphone or professional camera but cannot include additional footage, interviews, music or graphics and should feature only the individual entering the competition.

Contestants then simply need to upload the video to their YouTube or Vimeo account and send the URL to BT Sport as part of the entry form submission on the BT Sport website.

Humphrey, who will help identify the winner as a judge, said: “BT Sport is thoroughly enjoying covering the FA Cup, the world’s oldest and greatest domestic football competition. We want to celebrate the tournament by unearthing future talent and great stories, by giving youth an opportunity to join in with BT Sport. This could be a great moment for one lucky girl or boy - I cannot wait to view the entries and present with that winner on FA Cup Final day.”

Grant Best, BT Sport’s senior executive channel producer, who will judge entries alongside Jake and the BT Sport team, added: “Watch the FA Cup with us on BT Sport and send us your entry based on the stories and dramas that this year’s FA Cup competition will present. We’re looking for bright, engaging and captivating young talent as we celebrate the magic of the FA Cup this season. Pay close attention to all of the terms and conditions on the btsport.com website to make sure you are available on certain dates. You will also need your parent or guardian’s permission to enter, and, you might need a Child Performance Licence from your local council to take up the prize, so do plenty of research!”

Entries remain open until midnight on 17 February, after which a final four shortlist will be drawn up and those shortlisted contacted on 20 February before 5pm. The final four will then attend a special judging morning at BT Sport’s state-of-the-art studios at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 3 April, where they will receive top tips on TV presenting from Jake and the BT Sport team, before recording a non-live, short piece to camera on the BT Sport TV set. Proposed Development Update.

I am pleased to see residents coming together to oppose the latest proposals to build hundreds of new dwellings within the Parish of Anstey. The Save Anstey Group have worked to make sure the voice of local people is being heard. I am grateful to all the residents who have taken the time to write to Charnwood Borough Council outlining their objections to the proposal to build on Cropston Road. I will be registering my objections to the proposals which will centre around sustainability and the major issues with the increase in traffic, especially within The Nook area and Leicester Road, where I believe there are capacity issues especially at peak times.

I also understand that the other proposed development on Cropston Road has now come forward along with the developer re-submitting the proposal to build on Gynsill Lane, this recently being refused by a Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council on sustainability grounds. I am becoming increasingly concerned that if all these piecemeal developments are allowed, I fear that it will leave an unwanted legacy for generations to come and they will be forced to live with bad planning decisions which have not been supported by local residents. I will continue to do all I can to resist these large developments which, in my view, do not fit with the Emerging Core Strategy which has now been approved to go to Public Examination by Charnwood Borough Council.

Gypsy and Traveller Site.

I was disappointed to learn that the request to call-in the proposal for this site on Greengate Lane was not successful. I understand that the Governments call-in policy makes it clear that the power to call-in a case will only be used very selectively. This request was carefully considered against the policy and concluded that the issues with this site did not meet the criteria, therefore intervention at Government level would not be justified. It was therefore decided that the application should be left to Leicester City Council to determine. I am sure

residents will keep me informed if any issues that arise as this site is developed and occupied.

Sponsored Roundabout Signs.

I am pleased there has been a resolution to the siting of sponsored roundabout signs within the Borough of Charnwood. The County Council modified their planning application, reducing the number of signs to 21 locations across the Borough along with reducing the size of the signs. This proposal has now been approved. I am pleased that signs within conservation areas have been removed, this includes the ones sited in the Anstey Nook roundabout. I know that many residents were not in favour of seeing them in the middle of the village.

Climate Change Consultation.

Residents and businesses are being invited to have their say on how Charnwood can reduce its carbon footprint. As part of its commitment to protect the Borough and environment for future generations, Charnwood Borough Council is holding a consultation on climate change.

The Council’s proposed action on climate change has been split into three main themes:

Raising Awareness – How the council will work with partners to raise awareness of the help that is available and how the Council can help them reduce their impact on the environment: Reducing Impact on Climate Change – What the Council can do to reduce its own impact: Resilience – The plans that are in place to tackle the risks posed by climate change.

ANSTEY NEEDS YOUR HELP....

Since its inception following the announcement by planning consultants that Outline Planning Permission for up to 70 houses to be built on Cropston Road, the “SAVE ANSTEY” campaign launched by Gareth Williams and initially supported by friends has gained momentum. The main purpose of the campaign is to resist unplanned and unwanted green field housing developments in our village. These developments if allowed would remove valuable countryside and strangle our village with increased traffic flow.

Developers are descending on boroughs that do not have Local Development Plans in place as they are considered easy pickings. Charnwood is one such borough, which has a plan lodged with government inspectors but not yet in place. If the plan is approved it will be October 2014 before it becomes effective.

Until that time places like Anstey are open to unwelcome developments. Unless we and our borough planners can prove these developments are not sustainable then in all likelihood they will be approved. The latest proposal is for 160 homes surrounding Fairhaven Farm, off Cropston Road (the land is not owned by the current residents of Fairhaven Farm) from an out of county house builder. The new site is practically opposite the proposed site for 70 houses which a planning consultancy are currently attempting to gain outline planning for. With an average of 2.2 cars per family, that is an additional 506 cars on the streets of Anstey and surrounding villages!

In addition to this onslaught, residents on Gynsill Lane are currently trying to prevent approval of applications for 57 and 40 houses there too.

Charnwood’s Local plan that runs up to 2028 sets a number of targets. One of which is for 200 houses to be built in seven service areas in the borough. Anstey is one of those service areas - these houses have already been built! The proposed unwanted developments for Anstey now total in excess of 500 homes and rising.

The “SAVE ANSTEY” campaign will continue fight and inform the local villages of the current situation. It is made up of Anstey and other local residents just like you so please support us.

Lingdale Golf Club "As is traditional at Lingdale Golf Club, the new Captains - Club Captain David Patton & Ladies Captain Rhoda Andrews - drove in on New Year's Day in what can only be described as very wet and murky conditions as can be seen in the photograph on the right. The theme was World War 1 Centenary (we think on the basis that 'General Patton' has taken over as Captain!

In a slight change to the usual format, the Junior Captain, Zak Viney, and the Seniors Captain, David Ager, were asked to join in the ceremony although David couldn't attend due to other commitments.

Bob Macgregor won the competition where members were asked to guess the distance between the balls driven by the Club Captain and Ladies Captain. The competition raised £339 for the Captain's Charity."

THE MONDAY CLUB Anstey WI ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY Once again The Monday Club members arrived with husbands, and friends to enjoy our ninth Christmas Luncheon at the Birstall Golf Club on Monday 9th December 2013. Part of the enthusiasm expressed on these occasions is the fact that year on year, friends meet up with a host of tales to tell of family events experienced during the previous year!

After Lunch, it was our pleasure to present Major Kathy Rowe, representing the Salvation Army, with a cheque for £256.23 by our Treasurer Mrs. Gill Smart, supported by the Club’s Committee, as featured below. This was the amount collected during the past year for the Charity.

As if most people had not seen enough of the stuff over Christmas, Anstey WI opened their programme for 2014 with a talk on the science of chocolate, from Dr Audrey Matthews of De Montfort University. Dr Matthews is a National Science ambassador, and an excellent one, being personable, friendly and fun, with the ability to explain things in simple terms.

If you ever wondered why so many of the famous British chocolate firms were founded

by Quakers, the answer may lie in the fact that they were not permitted to go to university, or work with in the alcohol or tobacco industries

Our first Meeting of the Club on January 13th was thankfully accompanied by plenty of sunshine although very cold. Previously for two years, we have had to cancel, much to the disappointment of both Members and our prospective Speaker.

There was no shortage of volunteers for Dr Matthews’ tasting experiments, though interestingly there was more enthusiasm for testing types of milk chocolate than for plain.

Many of her listeners were pleased to hear that chocolate has nutritional value, providing iron and magnesium as well as vitamins A, B and D. Add to that chemicals that improve one’s mood, and it is easy to see why it is so popular.

It was a deliciously enjoyable evening.

After the “Business” section for the Club Meeting, we were pleased to enjoy a delightful spread of a variety of cakes etc. to have with our Tea and then proceed to take part in two very amusing games. The first one being an old favourite of guessing from photos, the celebrities names and the other created by our Member Mrs. Diane Rouse which was a novel twist on “Pass the Parcel” which required brainwork and deftness of hand. An excellent conclusion to the first Meeting of this year..

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 December and 18 January 2014 inclusive. You will see from the figures that burglaries of non-dwellings and outbuildings, such as sheds and garages, has again raised concern and appears to be a trend across the whole of Charnwood. On investigating these crimes, it is clear to see that sheds in particular can be home to some very expensive items.

These include top of the range cycles and expensive tools and electrical equipment. It is vital therefore that the security of your shed is taken seriously, and if the shed cannot be secured effectively then all high value items should be removed and secured elsewhere. It should also be noted that sheds and outbuildings often store gardening tools (spades etc), and these items are often used to force entry to the main property. Whilst thankfully house burglaries are still rare in Anstey, don’t make it easy for the criminal by leaving garden tools out or easily accessible in an unsecured shed.

By far the majority of items stolen from sheds are cycles. However, we have also seen another cycle taken whilst it was left insecure outside a shop in the centre of the Nook. It only takes a split second for a cycle to be taken whilst left unattended, so please ensure the cycle is

locked and secure even if you are just popping into a shop for a minute.

Your local Policing team will be conducting a number of operations in the coming weeks to try and deter this sudden rise in shed breaks and catch offenders, but as always we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999.

On a positive note, we are happy to report that 2 males have been arrested and charged following two separate thefts from the Co-op Store, Cropston Rd, in the run up to Christmas.

This again highlights the good partnership working between Co-op staff and Police, and sends a clear message that any theft from the Co-op however small will be dealt with positively.

New Head Teacher at Richard Hill School I would like to introduce myself and our school to the community. My name is Nicola Quinn and I have just become the Head Teacher at Richard Hill Church of England Primary School in Thurcaston. I have been a teacher for 18 years, the last 3 have been as a Deputy Head in Nottinghamshire. Richard Hill School is my first Headship and I am looking forward to working with the staff, children, parents, Governors and the local community.

Before Christmas we were able to install a new library area in our school thanks to funding provided by the PTFA (Parents, Teachers & Friends Association). The library houses all our non-fiction books and provides an excellent area for children to research different topics. Over the last few years the Breakfast Club has grown considerably in popularity and helps parents who need to travel to work early in the morning. The club runs from 8.00 am until school starts. The children at our school have enjoyed a variety of sporting successes over the years and we have a wide range of clubs that are run by external organisations allowing the children a broad selection of sporting activities.

Well far from the year starting off well, I am afraid to say I was rushed into the Royal with a nasty virus on Boxing Day and spent New Year ’s Eve in hospital. Then after spending 4 days back at home I was readmitted this time with an infection that required an operation, and unfortunately I have been here eversince. I am making progress but I am informed that I won’t be “let out” until I am fully recovered, this time.

Davidson Development on Groby Lane the road is called Simmerfield Drive. I queried this and it should be Summerfield. The signage will be changed from 2nd February. All the street names on this new development are the name of an Anstey person who fell fighting for his country in the 1st. World War.

In its 5th Birthday Year, the Enderby Dodgeball Club are on the look out for both new male and female players for 2014.

The Enderby Dodgeball session will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30pm to 10.30pm at the Enderby Leisure Centre on Mill Lane. Sessions are for those aged 15 and above the club age range is 15-40 plus. New members do not require any experience as all rules are taught on the night. All new members receive a welcome pack on their first session.

FEBRUARY’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW Be 'Cyber Streetwise'!

Are you savvy online? Perhaps not as streetwise online as you would like to be or think you are?

The National Fraud Agency is launching a new campaign, Cyber Streetwise, to help give us all some essential tips to improve our performance online and help keep important stuff safe. You can read more about the campaign at www.cyberstreetwise.com.

NHW NATIONAL is supporting this campaign to help get us all be a bit more streetwise online.

Believe it or not most of the population are not doing enough to protect themselves! This is a medium/long term campaign designed to help people by raising awareness of the website and the key tips below.

Adopting a few simple online behaviours can help keep you and your family safer, such as: 1. Using strong, memorable passwords.

2. Installing anti-virus software on new devices.

3. Checking privacy settings on social media.

4. Shopping safely online – always ensuring to check online retail sites are secure.

5. Downloading software and the application of patches when prompted.

CHARLES DRIVE I apologise to the members in Charles Drive, who haven’t received their NHW welcome packs yet. I know your scheme was set up last September, and it was not until recently that I received news that these packs still hadn’t been given out. I have been round and posted some packs through the letter boxes of those members who had contributed at least a £1 towards their street signs, when I was collecting the completed surveys.

I hope by now that everyone who signed up to the scheme has received their window stickers, and goody bag. If anyone else still wishes to join can you please get in touch with me, and I will provide you with another survey to complete.

Your NHW Coordinator James Shaw has resigned due to pressure of work, and I am currently looking for some else to fill this role.

NEW NHW SCHEME I was hoping a new scheme would have been set up in Charnwood Road soon, but owing to unforeseen circumstances this has had to be delayed. If anyone is interested in helping to get this under way, please contact

This would mean that the centre of Anstey will be covered by NHW schemes.

Medieval and Tudor Gardens by Matthew Haddon Not many people manage to combine their main interests of Medieval and Tudor history and garden design into one, but our first speaker of 2014 does just that. Mathew Haddon, a garden designer from East Yorkshire with a degree in medieval history, used a series of pictures of ancient documents, maps, pictures, and manuscript illustration and the occasional photo of a reconstructed garden to take us all on a journey from the end of the Roman Empire to the end of the Tudor Dynasty.

Looking at the different types of gardens that everyone from the humble peasant farmer to the rich and noble kings and bishops would have been familiar with; Matt took us through features that our ancestors would have been known and loved. A walled or fenced area with a decorative entrance, creating an enclosed space, trees round the edge with clear space in the centre, grass with flowers and beds of roses, lilies and daffodils. It all has a familiar ring to it doesn’t it?

Matt showed explained the different types of gardens frequently seen in these earlier times. From allotment to herber, monastic garden with rows of plants grown for medicinal and herbal purposes; from orchard to Royal Park, with gardeners brought in from Spain and Italy to make gardens that would keep young European princesses from being homesick by recreating a familiar space for them.

These historical gardens are not really very different from our own, re-enforcing the idea that our hopes and inspirations for our gardens are deep seated in the human psyche. Gardens are still places to grow food and flowers, places to display our wealth and passions, and to create places to relax surrounded by flowers rich in colour and scent.

The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. There are 13 events planned for 2014, including a trip to the Tatton Park Spring Show. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

There are lots of pillows on the market which will provide better support for your neck than the conventional pillow. Personally, I recommend Putnams (www.putnams.co.uk) and Royal Rest (www.royalrestpillows.co.uk), who are both suppliers of effectively supportive orthopaedic pillows.

Neck strain is caused by prolonged strain on the ligaments, joints and muscles. It is not always serious, but slight modifications and good posture can help take the strain off your joints.

There are many everyday situations that are contributing factors to neck pain..For instance; many people wake up in the morning feeling discomfort in their head or neck.

One reason could be your pillow, whose purpose is to provide comfort, but could actually be doing the opposite – causing pain.

If it is too flat, it isn't supporting your cervical spine, which is the section of the vertebral column in the neck. If you are propped up too high and sleeping on your back, your pillows will be raising your head too much and pushing your chin towards your chest – this stretches the muscles and tendons in your neck, causing strain.

Another daily activity that could be resulting in pain, is your posture, particularly whilst sitting at a workstation. You should always keep contact between your back and the backrest of the chair to support the inward curve of your spine, this is easier if you sit back and move your chair closer to the desk. Incline the backrest slightly backwards to enable you to rest against it comfortably, and try to avoid leaning forwards.

Repeating this 5 times is ideal to avoid the strain of sitting.

If you can, choose a chair with a seat that has a slight forward tilt. This encourages a more natural posture. The Martin High School…

First term as an 11-16

It is a big change for a High School but our community have reported how overjoyed they are with the Martin School converting to 11-16. Our year 10 lead the school. They are taking up the challenge with hard work and high achievement in their first Controlled Assessments. Some students report that they are given almost too much homework. GCSE’s are the crunch time when you have to start coping with those adult pressures.

At the recent parents’ evenings, parents report most positively on the change. They like the seamless move into GCSE work. It is important that the teachers know the kids and the kids know the teachers. So far so good.

Preparing the school for 930 students When we planned our conversion, we anticipated our school would be for 700 students. The project is so popular with so many families seeking to enter their sons and daughters into the school that we will end up with a school of just over 900! The school will reach its maximum number next September 2014.

To meet this growth we are building 12 new classrooms which will be completed for the beginning of April. We are also going to convert two classrooms into science labs, bringing our total to six laboratories for September. We are also looking to secure the capital and build a sports hall, extension to our dining facilities, refurbish our art and design area for the completion of the new 11-16 school.

Thank you Thank you to every member of our community for raising £4444 at the Christmas fair on 20th December.

This year we supported a very local charity, “Jade’s Retreat.”

Jade was the daughter of one of our members of staff who died last year from terminal cancer.

Before she died, Jade set up a special retreat: a fund to be raised to provide for holidays for children and teenagers with terminal cancer and their families.

The whole community got behind the project. With over 100 stalls, buskers, arts, craft and magnificent support from our parents, we were able to raise this huge sum.

In addition to the £4444 raised, a member of the community donated £2000. The family have now raised £17,000 towards their goal.

The fair was a great, fun event as the pictures demonstrate. What a great way to end the term.

Sporting Achievements In December, Tara Smith 8A passed her 2nd degree black belt in karate and her brother Elliott 10N passed his 3rd degree black belt. Congratulations to them both.

Year 9 Basketball Congratulations to both boys and girls year 9 basketball teams who have each won the final of the Charnwood Basketball competition. The girls won 17-11 The boys won 31-12 We entered into the KS4 Swimming competition (although we swam mostly KS3 pupils). The students did amazing and came 4th with 4 points separating 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.

We were extremely proud of their behaviour, attitude and all their performances!

Congratulations to Lizzie Warner for winning the Junior Sportswoman category of the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards for her marvellous performance in archery. Lizzie is a national junior archery champion and is now participating nationally in the senior competition.

Sports Hall We are currently in the process of applying for funding to build a Sports Hall that can serve both the school and the wider community. We are really excited about this project, as we know how much our pupils and the residents of Anstey would benefit if we were successful with our bid.

We are trying to generate funds from various sources and would benefit from some additional support. We would like to ask if any parents or carers have any contacts for grants, funds or any businesses that may wish to sponsor us in this venture, which we hope you will agree, would be an invaluable facility for Anstey.

Thurcaston & Cropston Women's Institute Thursday 6th February 2014 Bosworth 1485, the quest for Bosworth Battlefield and King Richard III How we know what happened at the battle, how the location of Bosworth Battlefield was lost to history and how a multi-disciplinary survey helped to firm up the true location of the battle after years of debate. The story of the search for Richard III's final resting place in Leicester, which found the remains of Richard III himself against all the odds in August 2012.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club 2013 was a superb year for the gardening club with record membership and some exciting and interesting events in our calendar. Lingdale Golf Club "The 2013 Captains of Lingdale Golf Club - Club Captain Steve Boulton and Ladies Captain Lyneve McLoughlin, recently met the founders of local charity The Harley Staples Cancer Trust, to hand over £9122.00 - the proceeds of their fundraising from their year in Office.

The charity was set up in remembrance of eight year old Harley Staples who died in 2009 from a rare leukaemia. The main object of the trust is to provide a purpose built holiday home for children and teenagers with cancer to use for free with their families as a respite away from hospital. Homebuilder kicks off to mark sponsorship Leicestershire homebuilder Davidsons has recently sponsored local football club Anstey Nomads and the club has re-named their ground ‘Davidsons Homes Park’. Davidsons put together a team to play a Nomads Veterans side in a game to mark the sponsorship. Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society Our meeting on Tuesday 21st January 2014 saw the welcome return of Trevor Parr, the part-time historian and member of the Sealed Knot Society which re-enacts events of the English Civil War. Trevor’s well-illustrated and entertaining talk was entitled “The Local Civil War”.

There were many causes which led to the Civil War. Charles 1st was even more arrogant than his father, James 1st, had been and believed implicitly in “the divine right of kings”, leading to many conflicts with Parliament. Following the upheaval of the Tudor period, with the break from Rome and the establishment of the Protestant faith in England, when Charles married Henrietta, a French, Roman Catholic princess, it was not well-received throughout the country and brought concerns about Catholicism being reinstated as the primary religion. Religion played a significant role when Charles appointed men of the Catholic faith as his close advisors, most of whom were incompetent.

Mismanagement and profligacy with regard to finance was another failure on Charles’ part. Members of Parliament felt they had the right to challenge the king because they had been elected to serve, whereas the king had not.

Charles totally failed to accept that he was culpable in any way.

The Civil War began in August 1642 when the king raised his standard at Nottingham, before moving on to set up his headquarters in Oxford. In general, it was the Lords and landed gentry who made the decisions about which side to support, i.e. Royalists or Parliamentarians. Women had no right of expression or opinion and were expected to follow the dictates of their fathers or husbands to whom they “belonged”. Often, the local Vicar influenced the choice of allegiance.

Sadly, taking sides frequently led to families becoming divided when deciding where their loyalties lay. However, anyone choosing to opt out would be ostracized and most likely meet an ignominious end. Throughout the course of the War, it was not uncommon for people to change sides according to the prevailing fortunes of the war at the time!

Finance and supplies of food and arms were crucial and the king started with the disadvantage that, because he had upset so many of the nobility, far more of the wealthy nobles joined the Parliamentary side, meaning that the Royalists always tended to be short of money. Additionally, with the king’s continued excessive expenditure, by the end of the war Oxford was verging on

bankruptcy. The armies of each side consisted mainly of men recruited from the servants of the nobility, so were completely untrained in warfare – they were unpaid and dependent on their officers for sustenance.

Equally, apart from recruiting their own troop of men, officers were expected to kit themselves entirely (uniform, weapons, etc.).

As the armies moved around, living off the land was problematic and often led to conflict with the poor local citizens who barely had enough to feed their own families, let alone a hungry army. Officers often had to beg favours from local merchants for food supplies, but desertion was a problem amongst the hungry rank and file.

The war was said to be conducted in a rather “gentlemanly” fashion, in that opposing sides might agree a time for a battle to start, but would withdraw if the weather was unsuitable or the light began to fade. By the middle years of the conflict, the Parliamentarians recognised the need to improve discipline with regular drilling of their troops and payment was introduced – about 1d (penny) per day and the New Model Army was formed. Initially for both sides, there were no uniforms and what was worn showed your status rather than the side you supported.

Because the Royalists had soon lost control of London and the south east, which was vital for trade, supplies of material for clothing were scarce, but the better-funded Parliamentarians were able to introduce some uniforms in a brownish red colour.

Eventually, the Royalists were clothed in blue; regiments were identified by different sleeve facings and distinctive flags became a means of identifying each regiment. The person who carried the flag was known as an ensign, but later it was the flag that came to be called “an ensign”. Weapons of the era were pikes, muskets and cannon, all of which were problematic on the battlefield.

Significant events and battles in the Midlands included the battle of Edgehill in October 1642, the first major battle of the war and for which the result was inconclusive. Ashby Castle remained a Royalist stronghold throughout the war, but suffered the consequences of its loyalty by being completely gutted by Oliver Cromwell’s men when the war was over. By the spring of 1645, King Charles’ cause was floundering – the Royalists had lost much territory, including in the north of England. On 7th May 1645, together with his nephew, Prince Rupert, an experienced soldier and the senior Commander in the Royalist forces, Charles

began marching north with a large army of men, in the hope of regaining control. On learning that Oxford was under siege to Sir Thomas Fairfax and his troops, Charles and Rupert abandoned their plans and instead chose to lay siege to Leicester which was loyal to Parliament. Leicester would be an asset in their cause because of its close proximity to Royalist held Newark and Ashby.

The siege began on 30th May, but after a valiant and brave struggle, the citizens of Leicester eventually succumbed. There followed some of the bloodiest and cruellest acts of retribution of the whole war when many of the population of Leicester were slaughtered and the town ransacked and pillaged by the Royalists. Charles would later bear the consequences of that day’s actions since it was one of the many things held against him at his trial. With the fall of Leicester, Fairfax was ordered to march north to intercept the Royalists and they met on 14th June at the battle of Naseby, in Northamptonshire, where the better trained, disciplined and more numerous Parliamentarians prevailed. The Royalists fled in disarray towards Leicester, but they suffered a similar fate to that of the citizens of Leicester in the previous month. Charles, Rupert and their close followers escaped to the relative safety of Ashby Castle. After a brief confrontation, Leicester was returned to Parliamentarian hands on 19th June, but the town was in a terrible state from the first siege and it took many years for it to recover.

Eventually Charles surrendered in June 1646 and the Civil War came to an end, but it was not until 1st January 1649 that he was tried for treason and as a traitor. Stubborn to the end, he refused to recognise the legitimacy of the court, but he was found guilty and executed on 30th January. His eldest surviving sons, Charles and James, escaped into exile, where they remained until 1660. The rule of the English Commonwealth enforced strict codes of conduct – free choice, dancing, music and celebration of Christmas were all banned, so by the time of Oliver Cromwell’s death, the country welcomed wholeheartedly the restoration of the monarchy when Charles 2nd was invited to return to become king.

POPULAR DEMAND SEES CHARITY EXTEND SUPPORT SERVICES Registered charity, the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, is pleased to announce a new support initiative beginning in February 2014.

Support Thursdays will take place on four Thursdays in every month.

The drop in sessions will run from 10.30 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. at Ulverscroft Manor.

The sessions are open to anyone with a disability or illness, carers, or anyone who feels isolated. Kathleen Wass, Support Services Manager, said “the Support Thursdays have been introduced following a pilot scheme in 2013.”

Council offers help to struggling residents A £110,000 package of support is being offered to residents in Charnwood who need help with their finances.

Charnwood Borough Council has approved a £30,000 fund to offer specialist money management and debt advice services on top of an £80,000 fund to help struggling residents pay Council Tax bills.

The move comes as the Council approved an updated Local Council Tax Support scheme which will mean people in receipt of Council Tax Support will be asked to pay 15% towards their Council Tax bill as part of the Government’s welfare reform measures.

Pensioners and war widows are not affected by these changes.

The sessions will commence on Thursday 6th February and run as follows;

Councillor Jenny Bokor, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Revenues, Benefits and Customer Services, said: “I’m very pleased that the Council has approved this package of support for our most vulnerable residents.

1st Thursday – Health and Wellbeing which includes the opportunity to participate in seated yoga - £2.50 per session or chiropody / reflexology £13.00 per session.

“We know we still live in very challenging times and as we have had to increase the amount people have to contribute towards their Council Tax bill, it is important that we can offer this kind of help.

2nd Thursday – Coffee and Chatter – come along and meet new friends in the splendid surroundings of Ulverscroft Manor. Bring your knitting or a book or just enjoy a laughter and chatter day.

“I would urge anyone who has concerns about how welfare reforms impact their finances to get in touch with us. Our staff are ready and able to offer help and advice.”

3rd Thursday – Support for Carers – If the person you look after couldn’t cope without your assistance then you are a carer and deserve some help and support. Chiropody and reflexology available priced at £13.00 per session. A Support for Carers Leicestershire worker will be attending 10.30am until 12.30pm.

In 2013, the Government abolished Council Tax Benefit as part of the Welfare Reform Act and reduced the amount of money the Council receives to help pay to support benefit recipients on the lowest incomes.

Last Thursday – MS Drop in – Relaxation class 11.00am until 12 noon for a healthy body and mind - £2.50, chiropody and reflexology also available priced at £13.00 per session.

Mrs Wass also said that “the Foundation has received many positive enquires and bookings for the forthcoming sessions. We look forward to welcoming you and hope to provide continued support and advice throughout 2014 and beyond.”

The drop in sessions are free to attend, with light refreshments available for a small charge. Advance booking is essential for any additional activities.

Council Tax Benefit was replaced by a locally designed Council Tax Support scheme which meant anyone of working age and in receipt of benefit had to pay up to 8.5% towards their Council Tax liability in the first year.

That has now been increased to 15% to help cover a shortfall in public finances. The contribution will work out at about £2.80 per person per week.
