Anyone For Tennis (and much more) What is Antisocial Behaviour? Antisocial behaviour covers a wide range of unacceptable activity that causes harm to an individual, to their community or to their environment. This could be an action by someone else that leaves you feeling alarmed, harassed or distressed. It also includes fear of crime or concern for public safety, public disorder or public nuisance. Examples of antisocial behaviour include: • Nuisance, rowdy or inconsiderate neighbours
It has been a busy year for Gynsill Tennis Club. There is social tennis at the club 3 times a week which is really enjoyable. Also the men, ladies and juniors have all been playing in matches in the local leagues.
you may find it useful and reassuring to have access to practical information and advice, or simply, someone to talk to who understands what you are going through. The information contained in this section will help you to find out what happens when you have reported a crime, how forensic evidence is gathered, and who you can contact for help and support.
As well as playing tennis the club members have been on a walking weekend, had a boules tournament and bbq in the tennis club car park, a quiz night and enjoyed a pie night at Beaumanor Hall.
Witnesses - We rely on people like you to inform us if you have witnessed a crime or incident of anti-social behaviour.

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON
The Beauty of Moorcroft Mr Derek Holloway told us about the Moorcroft company of Stoke-on-Trent, which was founded in 1913 and is still going strong, using the same traditional work techniques as before. The labour intensive pieces are considered very beautiful and can command high prices. The company was founded by William Moorcroft (1872-1945). He came from a Potteries family, but lost his parents when quite young. He showed artistic skill, and studied in London and in Paris. He went to work for the company James Macintyre, and rose to become their chief designer, taking inspiration from the Art Nouveau movement and William Morris’s work. He even won gold medals for his work, which was sold in Liberty’s of London, a company with whom he had a very long association, and Tiffany’s of New York. William got married and had a daughter, then a son called Walter. William left Macintyre’s and in 1913 he set up his own business. He designed the new building with the help of his wife Florence, who was actually a Government factory inspector. Crucially, Liberty’s supported him financially during this period, and held a major interest in the Moorcroft company until the 1960s. The building is now used as a Heritage Centre. Moorcroft pieces are not made of porcelain but of earthenware, which is more susceptible to chipping. Various ranges were produced, such as Aurelian Ware or Florian Ware, which can be quite valuable now. Liberty’s asked him to make pieces which promoted their company, and Mr Holloway showed us an example where their name appeared in large letters around the top. No company of this kind could make a profit from art pottery alone, and so Moorcroft’s also made everyday pieces such as their popular blue porcelain tea sets. There was very little
mechanisation, and it took ten separate processes to make pieces for such a set. First you make a mould from hardwood. Then you prepare a plaster-of-Paris mould, held together by wire, and pour in the liquid “slip” (Cornish clay, mixed with water). When the item has hardened, you remove it from the mould - it is not fired in a furnace at this stage. Next the item goes to a turner using a horizontal lathe to hollow out the inside, and he finishes the shaping with chisels. The next operator is the buffer, who uses natural sponges, and who also applies the identification marks on the bottom of the piece, which is then left to dry. The backstamps tell you the pattern number and who made it. After that the design is transferred onto the piece with tracing paper, using ink with a secret formula! They are “tube lined”, where an outline is put onto the item in question using something similar to icing bags and nozzles, but using slip. Next it goes to the painting department and the space inside the lines is filled with paint. Once dry, the item goes into a kiln for the first firing. All pots look dull when the kiln is opened. When cool, the pieces are dipped in a vat of glaze and go back for a second firing. In 1904, Moorcroft’s designs won a Gold Medal at the World Fair in St. Louis; and in 1928 he received a Royal Warrant from Queen Mary. He would sign or initial almost every piece he had designed. Mr Holloway showed us examples of some popular patterns in the 1930s called “Pansy”, and “Pomegranate”, which by now had to compete against the Art Deco movement. Exotic flowers were featured in ranges such as “Hibiscus” and “Arum”. In 1926 William Moorcroft was widowed, but in 1928 he married Marian, who was part of the Liberty’s family, and they had a son called John. His older son Walter joined the firm.
Between 1935 and 1945, father and son made about 80 different designs. Walter had good language skills; when he was called up he was tasked with interrogating captured German officers. William Moorcroft had a stroke and died in 1945, and his son Walter was demobbed. He ran the factory for the next 40 years and saw it prosper. His half-brother John also came into the company. The brothers had both attended Rugby School, and made some commemorative plaques showing the game of rugby being played there. Many innovations were introduced, such as replacing the old bottle kilns with kilns powered by North Sea gas. The V & A Museum held an exhibition promoting Moorcroft in 1972. In 1984, the business was sold. Walter’s designs were used until 1987. In 1999 he received an OBE. Hugh Edwards is the current owner, and there is a workforce of about 120 people. A vase commemorating the company’s 100th anniversary was made in 2013 by Kerry Goodwin. The chief designer is now Rachel Bishop, who has worked for the company for over 25 years, and the brand has prospered under her. She draws inspiration from the New Forest and the Lake District, and designers are encouraged to suggest new ideas. The Heritage Centre in Stoke-on-Trent offers visitors free car parking and free admission, and Mr Holloway thoroughly recommends pre-booking for a one-hour factory tour. If you wish to buy Moorcroft seconds, you can now do so online. Buy only from a reputable source, as there are many fakes being imported from the Far East. As the poet John Keats said, “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” *** Monday Club meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. Our next meeting will be the AGM on 11th February, with some in-house entertainment. Please see local posters for details. New members and visitors are very welcome, whether ladies or gentlemen!

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club
In 1978 Steve bought a house on Cropston Road, in Anstey and with it a large piece of land. There, he and his wife Maggie set up and developed Brookside Nurseries. During the development of the nursery they made frequent mistakes, and this provided a rich source for many of his humorous stories. Brookside soon became popular with many in the area, not only for general gardening supplies, and also for many specialisms such as seasonal bulk buys for the vegetable gardener and allotment holder, chrysanthemum and dahlia cuttings (his passion) and floral displays (his forte).
Steve Budding - ‘It shouldn’t happen to a nurseryman, but it did’
year award. Last autumn he was back at the Sandringham Estate where he and his son have a rolling contract, hedge laying for Prince Charles. Steve once asked a 90 year old blacksmith why he continued to work. The man pointed to a spade lent against the wall and said ‘if you leave the spade there, it will soon get rusty. But if you use it every day, it will stay nice and bright‘. Steve’s life in a sentence. The Gardening Club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will find something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is still only ÂŁ12 for the year (pro rota) or ÂŁ3.00 per meeting. So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.
The Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club started 2019 in grand style, with a talk in January by Steve Budding. Steve was the long-time proprietor of Brookside Nurseries, Anstey and is much respected in the community. During his talk, Steve shared many memories, yarns and anecdotes with us – most with a humorous twist. He talked about his early years and the many influences on his life. These included his great, great grandfather, Freddie Antill, and Jim Haddon, local farm manager (father of Dave Haddon, the chair of the Gardening Club). From a young age, Steve had many summer jobs on the farm, and when he left school, went to agricultural college.

Some of Steve’s Chrysanthemum winners
Many of the hilarious tales Steve told related to wedding and funeral flowers. He talked with pride about many of the displays he created which were very special to the families who had placed the orders. During Steve’s career he developed many fine skills. He is a National Champion Chrysanthemum grower and a National Champion hedge layer. For his daughter’s wedding he turned his skills to willow weaving and produced an exceptionally realistic family of deer!

The next club events are:-
Wednesday 13 February, 7.45 pm Grow the Best Glorious Plants Adam Pasco An illustrated talk by Adam Pascoe. Adam is a National Radio & Television broadcaster & Writer. He launched the BBC Gardener’s World magazine in 1991 and was editor for 22 years. Adam will introduce us to a wide range of glorious plants that are guaranteed to succeed, whether in borders, pots or baskets. Full of inspiring planting ideas, this talk is sure to fire the imagination with a wealth of wonderful suggestions, and introduce new plants you may not have considered growing before.

Most of the stories Steve told were very funny and he had a very appreciative audience laughing a lot during his talk. He loved the agricultural life and spent every spare moment of his youth on the local farm. He made the point that when working on farms he saw a lot of life, but sadly also a lot of death. One sad story Steve told was about a work–shy sheep dog which he became very attached to during one of his early farming jobs. The dog showed little enthusiasm for the task he was bred for and one day when Steve turned up for work he found that the dog had been shot. A stark lesson in the realities of running a farm.

Volunteers required for vital roles in helping to support older people
Our next meeting will be held on: Wednesday February 20th 2019 at 7.00.p.m. in Anstey Community Library
Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the country and inspires and enables 20,000 volunteers to give their skills, experience, energy and time to help people in need in hospitals, at home and in the community. Locally in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we support approximately 2,000 older people per year with our services.
“Echoes From The Workhouse” The story of Rothley Workhouse. Speaker: Terry Shepherd (Rothley Heritage Group) Members: Free Non-members: £2.00
These services include helping older people who have been discharged from hospital to rebuild their confidence and remain independent once they return home, providing transport to help with shopping, attending hospital appointments or support with social opportunities. In addition our volunteers provide valuable company and friendship as well as making sure that the older person is safe and well. Teresa Gibbs – Commissioned Services Operations Manager for Royal Voluntary Service: “The demand for our services is always increasing and as a result of this we are looking to recruit more volunteers to allow us to continue to offer the support to local older people. Our volunteers make a significant and positive difference to older people’s lives and without their incredible contribution we would certainly not be able to provide the current level and range of services.” Chris Cordle, a retired NHS medical psychologist from Leicester, is a Royal Voluntary Service volunteer. She delivers the charity’s Home from Hospital service which helps settle older people back into home after a hospital stay. She says: “I missed the satisfaction of working with people - I loved that part of my job. Volunteering has filled that gap. I enjoy working with older people, hearing their stories and helping them to achieve their aims. Much of my career was about motivating and helping people, and that’s what I’m still doing now. I really enjoy encouraging people to achieve their personal targets. It’s very satisfying.”

Five Year Housing Land Supply
David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
Roecliffe Road Speeding Vehicles I have again been corresponding with Leicestershire Police about the enforcement activity they have carried out with visits to Roecliffe Road with the speed camera van. I am grateful to the Police for responding to my request for action to be taken to help reduce speeds on this road. I notice that this road is now listed on the schedule for visits in the future. Every month since September 2018, the camera van has visited once. The times of the visits have been varied and a good number of vehicles have been detected travelling over the pre-set threshold for the 40mph speed limit on this part of the road. I am pleased the times have included early morning and late afternoon, residents have told me these are the times when they see more speeding vehicles. Residents living on Roecliffe Road may be interested in the dates and times the van has attended, some may have seen the van in attendance. 29th September 16.44 to 18.20: 11th October 08.45 to 10.30: 19th November 07.40 to 09.20 and 5th December 12.45 to 14.30. With the help of the Newtown Linford Parish Council erecting a speed monitoring sign, I am hopeful these combined actions will help to reduce speeds and make this road safer for the residents who live there.
Burglar Jailed for 3 Years A Loughborough man who burgled a house in Newtown Linford has been jailed for 3 years, he pleaded guilty to the incident and was sentenced when appearing at Leicester Crown Court. I understand the man drove to the address leaving his car engine running whilst approaching the property on foot. He was spotted by a member of the public who, thinking something didn’t seem right, continued to watch him disappear from view
before reappearing minutes later vacating the house via a downstairs window before getting back into his car and leaving the scene at speed. He was disturbed by the burglar alarm, but in the brief moments he spent inside the property he took items of jewellery which had a huge sentimental value. I was pleased to receive this information, especially as this involved a member of the public helping the Police to make an arrest and secure a conviction. I know from experience that burglaries of this nature can have a devastating effect on victims, especially when items of sentimental value are stolen. Please make sure you report all suspicious incidents to the Police, helping to make sure we all do as much as we can to reduce crime within our neighbourhoods.
New Planning Applications I have received notification about two new planning applications within the Woodhouse Parish, both sites have featured in previous planning applications. The first, land off Briscoe Lane, Woodhouse. You may recall this was previously refused planning permission by Charnwood Borough Council for the erection of 9 dwellings, subsequently was allowed on appeal by a Government Inspector. The new application P/18/2540/2 is for the erection of 7 dwellings on this site.
Charnwood Service Centres such as Anstey and the small village of Woodhouse have seen an increase in approved development, in my view, not in line with the Local Plan 20112028, Core Strategy. This has generally been caused by Charnwood Borough Council not being able to demonstrate a five year housing land supply. It is now nine months since the annual figure was published indicating the housing land supply stood at 5.9 years. Would the Leader update members on the current position and the likely direction of travel before the next annual position is calculated at the end of March 2019? This may be a technical aspect of the planning process, in my opinion, it is most important to have a five year land supply in place to minimise the risk of piecemeal development within our villages. I am sure you recall the recent application for a large development within Woodhouse Eaves which was refused. I will keep you informed when I have the answers to my question.
Review of Polling Stations
The second, 80 Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves. The previous application for the erection of 2 dwellings to land at the rear of 80 Main Street was refused by Charnwood Borough Council. The new application P/18/2464/2 is for the erection of two detached dwellings on land rear of 80 Main Street.
I received information from residents that the polling station at the Sunday School, Newtown Linford was difficult for wheel chair users to access the building and vote. I asked officers at Charnwood Borough Council to investigate to see if this situation could be resolved for the next Borough Council elections on May 2nd 2019.
I will keep you informed with progress as these applications go through the planning process.
The (Acting) Returning Officer has investigated the possibility of an alternative venue and has carried out an inspection of The Linford, 66

I have put forward a question to be answered at the Full Council meeting at Charnwood Borough Council about this crucial part of planning policy when planning applications are determined, especially if they are decided on appeal by a Government Inspector. In my view, when the Borough could not demonstrate a five year land supply, development was permitted in areas that were not in line with the Local Plan, Core Strategy. Therefore I am asking the following question:

Main Street, Newtown Linford to asses it’s suitability as a polling station. The result of the assessment is that The Linford has adequate facilities for polling, including parking and disabled access. Therefore, The Linford will replace the current polling station at the Sunday School for Polling District CM1, Newtown Linford and CM2 Ulverscroft. The other polling stations within my Ward, the Village Hall, Woodhouse Eaves and the Community Hall, Woodhouse are satisfactory for disabled access, therefore remain as before.
Investment in the Outwoods
"/: 617$ 130%6$5 4 03%& 3& % * / ' & #36"3:
I know many residents living locally visit the Outwoods, which is 110 acres of ancient woodland and is one of the oldest surviving woodland sites in Charnwood, close to the Parish of Woodhouse. I have received information that Charnwood Borough Council has secured funding of £140.000 to upgrade visitor facilities at this popular woodland. This will include installing a shelter to hold more activities, a play area and an open events area with more picnic tables, the car park will also be improved. Work is due to start later this month and there are longer term plans by the Council to convert the old ranger’s cottage into a café and visitors centre. The £140,000 of European funding has been provided by the Rural Payments Agency to support the development of tourism throughout the year in the area. The project is part of a Charnwood Forest initiative which focuses on providing better facilities and activities for visitors to the wood, particularly the quieter off-peak times. The Outwoods is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England which means it is protected by law to conserve its wildlife and geology. Later this year it is planned to carry out work to restore native oak trees. Some years ago I was Chairman of the Outwoods Management Committee. If you have never been to this woodland, I can recommend going when the bluebells are out (early May) this is a sight worth seeing. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 OHH e-mail cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

The Friends of CHARNWOOD FOREST
Adrian Lane is keen to share the knowledge he acquired during a 30-year career on the riverside team of Leicester City Council, and his enthusiastic talk entertained a record audience at our January meeting.
Monday 18th February 7:30pm
As the River Soar passes through Leicester it follows the course of the prehistoric River Bytham, which flowed north then east towards Great Yarmouth. The Ice Ages reshaped the landscape so that water from the Soar now reaches the sea at the Humber Estuary. The Soar is very much Leicestershire’s river, draining 90% of the county but hardly extending beyond it. It is believed that Celtic settlers’ name for the river was Leire – possibly from the same origin as the River Loire – which in turn gave rise to the name Leire-cester. The chosen site of the town was a small, glacial hill, close enough to the river for convenient transport and water supply but high enough to avoid flooding. The Romans built walls on three sides, with the river forming a boundary to the west. Although Leicester eventually grew and spread beyond the walls, there was almost no development on the other side of the river until the 19th century. Coal was four times more expensive in Leicester than in Loughborough until the opening of the Soar Navigation in 1794, which allowed cheap supplies from Derbyshire to be brought to a wharf near Belgrave Road. The Leicestershire coal owners soon fought back by building the pioneering Leicester and Swannington Railway, with a station at West Bridge. Industry has since declined and factories no longer face onto the river and canal but many of their chimneys still form landmarks on the skyline and are preserved by planning rules. The owners complained at first but later reaped the benefits when sites for mobile phone aerials were needed!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information, and I hope you are able to help me in trying to grow our local communities awareness of our association.
Flooding was a recurrent problem in Leicester until a grand scheme in the 1870s lowered the bed of the River Soar by 10 feet. This also made it possible to create Abbey Park on land between the river and the canal.
Our Mission Statement.
Commercial use of the waterways dwindled after WWII but a rally in Leicester in 1967 attracted 350 boats, marking a renaissance of the river and canal for leisure activities. Today nature is returning: there are badgers living in Abbey Park and otters have been recorded along the whole length of the River Soar. At our next meeting we will learn more about the Leicester and Swannington Railway from Bill Pemberton. The talk is at 7.30pm on 19th February in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston. Visitors are welcome (£3).
To work towards the preservation of the countryside and local environment of Charnwood Forest Regional Park for the benefit of those who live within it, and for those who visit, and for future generations. Deborah Taylor... Latest News Borough Councillor for Anstey & County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk & Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor
I have been attending Lead Member meetings throughout January and dealt with a few issues but the main meetings of the year are now starting. On Thursday 17th January I attended ‘Signs of Safety’ training at County Hall. This training explained how social workers work with children and families in need of help and support. It looks at the ‘what is working well’, ‘what are you worried about’ and ‘what needs to happen’. How the information is gained from the children and families is changed according to the age of the children. Once the information is gathered it helps social workers to work with the family on a plan going forward for improvements to their family life. On Friday 18th and Saturday 19th January I attended my second module of my ‘Next Generation’ training at Warwick Conference Centre. This module was based on communications. We looked at all sorts of media and how they work. We were each filmed having a mock media interview for 5 minutes with a journalist. We then watched each other’s interviews and provided feedback to the individual and group to learn from the experience. We then had a RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) trained actress to teach us about our breathing techniques, how to project our voices and how to present a speech. It was a very interesting and informative couple of days but was very intense! On Tuesday 22nd I attended my first Corporate Parenting Board. This is a multiagency meeting to ensure our looked after children are receiving the help and support that they need to lead a healthy life and flourish. It also looks to ensure that the children
are achieving at a high level of education, training and employment. We enjoyed watching a video made professionally by some of our looked after children about their experiences of living in care.
A46/A5630, Anstey Lane Improvements This work has now commenced and will see the duelling of the section of the road between A46 interchange and Bennion Road with new traffic lights installed at both roundabout junctions. The Bennion Road junction will also be widened as part of the scheme. These improvements are part of the Ashton Green development in Leicester and for the future planned housing developments in the north of Leicester and Leicestershire. The first phase is underway now and is currently clearance and preparation for the duelling of the road. This work will include some lane restrictions on Anstey Lane but these will be at off peak times. The second phase will start in early summer and is expected to take around nine months and will involve traffic diversions. Details will be published nearer the time. Some funding for these alterations have been put into this scheme by the Bloor Homes development in Anstey.

needs (SEMH) and one for communication and interaction needs (this includes autistic spectrum disorder - ASD). ➢ Creating more places in their existing enhanced resource bases The consultation opened on Monday 7th January and runs until Sunday 31st March. A series of meetings are to be held for anyone who would like to find out more. Booking isn’t necessary and the nearest event for my division is on Tuesday 5th March, 6pm-8pm at Ashmount School, Thorpe Hill, Loughborough, LE11 4SQ. In the spring, more information will be available on the type and proposed location of the provisions. All the comments submitted during the consultation will help shape the final proposal and will be considered by the cabinet in the summer.
Grey Crescent, Newtown Linford Following several years of discussions and two consultations it has been decided that double yellow lines will not be put down on Grey Crescent. During the consultations there were many objections received to the yellow lines and those objections could not be overcome. I have spoken to many residents about their issues and we have looked at many different options. I understand their frustrations especially with the length of time it has taken to get to this point. Without going back out to consultation with a completely different scheme we have very limited options to consider. The Bradgate Park Trust has funded the consultation for Grey Crescent and Bradgate Road and the laying of the double yellow lines on Bradgate Road. There is no further money available to go out for consultation again. I have held talks with officers at County Hall and they have agreed to put down elongated H protective markings

across all the driveways on Grey Crescent for all the residents who would like them, apart from where there are already double yellow lines across driveways. I carried out a site visit with Cllr David Snartt, Pam McMorran and Sue Pritchard to view drives where H markings are to be offered and looked at the existing parking restrictions. It was agreed that the majority of residents would be helped to some degree by the H markings but it was noted that some residents will gain no benefit. The H markings will help stop the blocking of driveways and reduce the space available for further street parking on Grey Crescent, thus hopefully stopping the long line of parked cars that make Grey Crescent a single file road. Once the markings are down, we will be monitoring the area to see what improvements are made and I would be extremely grateful if residents would feedback to the Parish Council or myself on improvements and any ongoing issues. The Parish Council are looking to carry out traffic surveys in the village and Grey Crescent will be part of that work. If there are still problems on Grey Crescent they will be looked at as part of a whole village solution. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

The Martin High School... “Inspiring to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.” We are Martin High School Bugsy Malone Spectacular Over two evenings our pupils put on amazing performances of Bugsy Malone and we saw over 150 people attending on both nights. There was singing, dancing, and lots of fun and chaos with a lot of foam involved!
Bridie Milner – Head of Creative Arts/ Ann-Marie Shaw – Teacher of Music Leonard Cheshire Home On Tuesday 11th December a group of 15 singers from the MHS vocals group and our guest guitarist Rachel Yarrow-Hadfield, gave a fabulous performance to the residents at the Leonard Cheshire Home. We sang a variety of Christmas and everyday chart hits and really enjoyed the residents singing along with us, the highlight was the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ with actions!
Christmas Fund Raising
It’s
Our Christmas raffle and fayre which took place on the 21st December and this year the focus was on business management and careers. Pupils were asked to get creative on a budget for their stalls and it certainly proved very successful as we managed to raise £2253.60p, which was split between three charities: £1000.00 to NOWZAD – On Friday 18th January, Pen Farthing, an ex-Marine, author and founder of the Nowzad charity came to the school to talk to all year 7, 8 and 9 about his charity. All learners were very engaged and focused on his presentation as Pen explained the Nowzad’s mission. The mission is ‘to relieve the suffering of animals in Afghanistan; including companion animals, working equines, stray and abandoned dogs and cats and all other animals in need of care and attention’. Pen Farthing collected a cheque from the school for a £1000 for this very worthwhile charity. Pupils and staff had raised this by various fundraising events eg. A Halloween Accessory Day, cake bakes, prize draws, Christmas fair café and Tombola. To donate or find out more information on the Nowzad charity please go to https://www.nowzad.com
The pupils that were involved are true ambassadors of Martin High School, taking time to speak and share Christmas cheer with everyone at the home. Well done everyone!
Martin High’s STEM Ambassadors Martin High School have appointed two new STEM Ambassadors. The KS3 students, Hoi Ting Cheung and Lucy Merryweather, received the accolade after winning a competition titled ‘My Life in 2050’. The competition, which ran during Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, asked students to explore the way Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering may impact human life in the future. After wowing the judges, both girls were presented with a trophy and a signed photograph of David Attenborough. The students’ names are now also engraved on the STEM Committee Shield.

ANSTEY CHESS CLUB Before I start, I'd like to thank some pivotal organisations that assist me with my chess club. Anstey Parish Council - For the grant towards the chess club of £250. It was an extremely humbling experience to receive the cheque. It has replenished monies that I have input into the club for playing equipment and room hire in the early days. Anstey Community Library - For the continued use of their Sure Start room on Saturday mornings, enabling me to keep my sessions free to all. Stadon Sports & Social Club - For the continued use of their upstairs playing room on Thursday evenings. I'd also like to apologise for the lack of updates recently. In November I was taken ill during the article submission period and December? A little thing called Christmas with a one year old was busier than expected! I am still running sessions on Saturday mornings from 10am-1pm, with the help of Anstey Community Library. These sessions are for anybody that would like to learn to play chess, has some experience playing chess, or already knows how to play chess and would like to play some friendly games. These sessions are still free of charge. League update - We are sitting reasonably comfortably in mid table in Division 5 of the Leicestershire League in 7th place out of 9. To date, we have had 10 matches, which is why we may feel a little less comfy once our opposing teams catch up with the amount of games we've played. We've won 2, drawn 4 and lost 4. So many of those games have literally been on knife edges and could have gone the either way. February Club Nights/Fixtures 7th February - Club Night 14th February - HOME fixture vs Latimer 2 21st February - Club Night 28th February - HOME fixture vs Heathcote Arms 3 Club Nights tend to be relaxed and quite often, we do a little bit of coaching with our league players. When players have lost, drawn or maybe even won, myself and Mick Sandham give the players practical advice on what they could/should have done. We then usually move on to playing some friendlies amongst ourselves. League matches are a little more intense and require the room to be silent or very little ambient noise. You are welcome along on any night so please pop along to see what we're all about. New players are welcome along at any time - regardless of standard.

Anstey Rugby Club banner back up While driving into Anstey from the city or the A46 on Leicester Road you will notice a large banner on the side of our clubhouse aka The Coach and Horses. Go through the door nearest that banner, round to your left is our noticeboard giving details of who’s who and latest match information. Anstey RFC is less than a year away from celebrating forty years of village rugby and we are looking to rebuild our club to greater things with a far larger squad of players giving us an opportunity to field more than one team on a regular basis. As we head into 2019 many of the clubs we used to regularly play against have long since disappeared or amalgamated with other clubs. So the fact that your local village rugby club, Anstey RFC is still fielding a side is great to see. Anstey is now a far larger village than it was back in 1980 when we started out, so there must be potential for building our club back up for the 2019/20 season fielding more regular teams. As well as playing, the positive social life that goes with Rugby Union is well known. As a club we want to look outside our membership for helping to raise our profile and ensure we thrive in the years to come. Can you help? - If so give me call on 07720 451 455 or come to our next committee meeting at 8pm in the Coach and Horses on the first Wednesday of every month. Your Village Club, Anstey RFC needs YOU. Our Club Coach, Matt Belcher, organises regular training sessions every Wednesday starting at 6.30pm under floodlights at our ground adjacent to the Martin High School on Link Road. All players both new or regular, experienced or total novices, fit or unfit, old or young are all welcome. Matches are on Saturdays kicking off at 2:15pm, until next month when they revert to the traditional 3pm kick-off time. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses pub in the Nook in Anstey. Are your children gamblers? HERE IS a sobering fact: more children have placed bets in the past week than have drunk alcohol, smoked or taken drugs. Such are the findings from an audit by the Gambling Commission. It also found that one in seven 11to16-year-olds bet regularly, staking an average of £16 a week. And those who start betting young are more like to have issues as adults, warns the charity Gamcare. The sad truth is that gambling has never been easier, with online outlets available 24 hours a day. And once a young person accesses them, the sites bombard them with marketing prompts for ‘boosted’ odds and ‘free bets’. Youthsite, a research organisation for 16-to 30-year olds estimates that more than 100,000 students are in debt due to gambling, with one in four of those owing more than £10,000. Although the Government has promised to (eventually) reduce the FOBT (Fixed Odds Betting Terminal) maximum stakes from £100 to £2, there are fears that the reduction will itself only increase the attraction of betting online.
The Beatles’ last concert ... on a roof, 50 years ago IT WAS 50 YEARS ago on 30th January 1969, that the Beatles gave their last public performance – on the roof of Apple Studios in London. It was their first truly live show since their final tour ended on 29th August 1966, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. They had become less popular in the US after John Lennon’s controversial remark in an interview that ‘we’re more popular than Jesus now’. In the rooftop concert, which lasted about 45 minutes, Get Back was the final song, and in the recorded version Lennon can be heard saying: ‘I’d like to say thank you … I hope we passed the audition.’ It was cold and windy, with a threat of rain. Lennon borrowed Yoko Ono’s fur coat, and Ringo wore his wife Maureen’s red raincoat. The group also varied their classic stage placements: Lennon took the middle spot, with Harrison to his left. Keyboard player Billy Preston guested. The police are widely criticised for breaking up the session, but in fact they were nearby and could have shut it down after the first song; instead they let it continue and gave the band ten minutes’ warning that they were about to intervene after complaints from neighbouring businesses. The Beatles broke up formally in April 1970.

Deborah Taylor & Paul Baines… Borough Councillors for Anstey Latest News Deborah Taylor 6 Geary Close, Anstey, LE7 7LW Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Tel: 0116 2350126 - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor
January is normally a quiet period for meetings and training, but it is starting to get busier now. Paul attended his first Anstey Parish Council meeting as Borough Councillor on Tuesday 15th January. He met all the councillors present and delivered his first Borough Councillor report. Paul is now up and running with his equipment and his email and contact details are included in the header. Charnwood’s first full council of the year was held on Monday 21st January. Paul was introduced to the full council and warmly welcomed by all the council members. On the agenda was the medium term financial strategy 2019-2022, the treasury management update - mid-year review and the capital plan amendment report. Also, on the agenda was the outcome of the review of all the polling districts, polling places and polling stations within the Borough. The new arrangements set out in the report will come into effect for the Borough elections on 2nd May 2019 and any subsequent elections. For Anstey, it was originally proposed to investigate splitting the single polling district for Anstey into two due to the large number of electors. However, it has not been possible to find a suitable alternative venue for a second polling station in the village and with the Parish Council not supporting any changes, it is proposed to provide additional staff at the current single polling station.
Air Pollution Following up from one of our commitments from the Anstey by-election we have been working on the air pollution in and around The Nook. From the 1st March 2019 there will be a new air quality monitor on Cropston Road. The exact location is yet to be confirmed but will be by a residential house as close as possible to The Nook. Charnwood Borough Council do measure the main pollutant from traffic, Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), using non-automatic passive monitors (diffusion tubes) at a number of locations around the Borough against the annual mean concentration air quality objective of 40µg/m3. The council then report the measured levels to DEFRA on an annual basis. There has been monitoring taking place in Anstey over the last 2 years and they show a consistent rate of approx. 27µg/m3. These levels are well within the recommended levels for air quality. It will take at least 9 months before we can pick up trends to see what Anstey’s air quality is like from the new monitor.

Paul Baines 3 Ruskin Field, Anstey, LE7 7QP Email: Cllr.Paul.Baines@charnwood.gov.uk Tel: 0116 2357656
Just some more background information about monitoring sites. They are located at positions consistent with DEFRA guidance to measure long-term public exposure, typically on or close to the facades of domestic properties alongside major roads and/or busy junctions. We cannot have a monitor directly in The Nook as the DEFRA guidelines state we need to measure where people spend the majority of their time and for this reason the short-term ‘transient’ movement of people, such as school children walking to/from school or shoppers that happens in The Nook, are scientifically not considered to be ‘relevant’ receptors.
Police Visit As part of Deborah’s Cabinet Lead Member role for Communities, Safety and Wellbeing she is Chair of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership (CSP). As Chair of the CSP she sits on the Police and Crime Panel. On Tuesday 15th January, along with other members of the panel, she had a very useful visit to police headquarters. The panel were met by Lord Bach, the Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable Simon Cole. They visited the Contact Management Department, where all the 999 and 101 calls are taken and they were informed about how that department works, the sometimes intensely stressful situations that they deal with and how calls are prioritised. It was definitely an eye opener on how they operate, and Deborah will certainly be encouraging everyone to report non-urgent crimes online to save unnecessary calls to the centre. They were then taken to the digital hub, one of a very few in the country. This deals with all aspects of online crime, from gaining evidence from any device, collating CCTV images, to tracking down paedophiles and their victims. The police face enormous challenges and 999 calls are continuing to rise but they are always looking at ways to work more effectively.
293 Bradgate Road The planning application submitted 14th March 2017 for Land Adjacent to 293 Bradgate Road, Anstey, Leicester, LE7 7FX (P/17/0508/2) was refused by Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) on 14th December 2017. The applicant then applied to the Government Planning Inspectorate to appeal the refusal decision by CBC. The applicant proposed a residential development of two houses of 5-6 bedrooms each. The Inspectorate has reviewed the application and has decided to allow the
development, going against the decision by CBC. The main issue for the Inspectorate was to assess whether the proposed development would be a suitable location for housing. This involved taking into account the policies of the Development Plan and the Framework in relation to housing in rural areas; the effect on the character and appearance of the area in relation to landscape and the Area of Local Separation. It also looked at whether the proposal would provide an acceptable mix of housing. CBC had stated that the site was outside of the limits to development and within an area defined as countryside. Considering all of the above, the Inspectorate stated that whilst there could be no mistaking the extension of the village into a currently undeveloped area, the scheme’s design is sensitive to local character and architectural styling and would not appear prominent or incongruous and has therefore allowed the development. We are extremely disappointed that this application has been allowed outside the limits of the village and in an area of separation between Anstey and Newtown Linford. We are working with planning officers at CBC to further understand what more needs to be done to ensure that the Government Planning Inspectorate cannot change planning decisions made by CBC and the Planning Committee.
Residents’ Surgery Paul and Deborah will be holding a Residents’ Surgery on Saturday 9th March at Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road from 10am until 12 noon. Ed Argar has also been invited and will attend if his diary allows. Tea and biscuits will be available so please come along and speak to us about any issues that you would like help with.
Residents Survey Paul and Deborah had a residents’ survey running online during the by-election campaign and have decided to leave the survey up and running as another way for residents to contact them. The submissions are checked regularly so please fill out our survey on the link below if you would like to share your views about Anstey with us. https://www.charnwoodconservatives.org.uk / We are always looking for ways that we can improve the village for all residents. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help.

Anstey WI Anstey WI president Sheila Price was able to open the January meeting in the most delightful way, by presenting a gift and a card signed by all the members to Pat Wright, to celebrate her Diamond Wedding. As it was a complete surprise, husband Ernie was not present. Both Pat and Ernie have given wonderful service to the WI over the years. They collect and deliver the WI newsletter, and support our fundraising events, so both richly deserved the tribute on their very special occasion. Lucy Rossa then addressed the meeting on the subject of aromatherapy, with the emphasis on therapy. She explained the uses of essentials oils for relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and aiding digestion and breathing. She also recommended using lemon oil with bicarb and white vinegar for cleaning.
National Nest Box Week 14th – 21st February IF YOU like birds, now is the time to help the next generation get started. And so next month will see thousands of us shakily climbing ladders against the sides of our houses, garages and trees, to install cosy nest boxes. And soon our tenants will arrive: blue tits, robins, nuthatches, pied wagtails, sparrows, to starlings, tawny owls and even great spotted woodpeckers. National Nest Box Week was started by the British Trust for Ornithology in order to encourage the conservation of our breeding birds. Nest boxes are desperately needed, as natural nest sites for birds such as holes in trees or old buildings are disappearing fast, as gardens are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. It really is worth the trouble to put up a nest box. If you hang one within sight of your kitchen window, you will have hours of fun in observing the young feathered families. Visit the website at https://www.bto.org/about-birds/nnbw/make-a-nest-box for details of how to build a nestbox, where to site it, etc.

Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation hosts Time to Talk Day event SHUTTLEWOOD CLARKE Foundation will be holding an event on Thursday 7th February from 10.00am – 12noon as part of a nation-wide push to get people talking more openly about mental health for one day. Time to Talk Day is organised by Time to Change, the campaign to change how we all think and act about mental health problems, led by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness Time to Talk Day aims to get as many people as possible talking about mental health and this year, There are lots of different ways to have a conversation about mental health. Whether that is talking on a walk, or listening over a cuppa, conversations can make a big difference. Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation will join thousands of other groups, organisations, schools and members of the public, who will all be having conversations about mental health on Time to Talk Day. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, but many of us are too afraid to talk about it. Starting a conversation about mental health might seem daunting but simply sending a text, checking in on a friend or sharing something on social media can break the ice. Helen Baxter, Activities Coordinator said: “We are taking part in Time to Talk Day because mental health is a topic that we should all feel able to talk about. Having these all important conversations can make a big difference to so many people. The more we talk - the more lives we can change. Drop in for a cup of tea, a chat and pin a note to our community pledge wall!’ The Free drop in event will take place on:- Thursday 7th February from 10.00am – 12noon at Ulverscroft Grange, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB for more details please contact Helen Baxter on 01530 244914 or visit www.shuttlewoodclarke.org
Help our HEDGEHOGS – or lose them forever THE UK has lost half of its hedgehog population since the year 2000. The Christian conservation charity, A Rocha UK, is out to stop the decline. ‘Project Hedgehog’ is one result, a joint initiative between A Rocha UK and the Lea Brook Valley Project. ‘Project Hedgehog’ provides purpose-built, cat-proof hedgehog boxes for private gardens. There are also detailed information leaflets on how to make gardens hedgehog-friendly. ‘We need to do this, for God, for nature and for people – and we need your help,’ says Andy Atkins, CEO of A Rocha UK.

6th-24th FEBRUARY This year there will be over 70 venues and the festival will feature a record number of shows and events. Of course, some of the biggest names in comedy will appear (including Arthur Smith, Johnny Vegas, Zoe Lyons, Jason Manford, Nish Kumar, Tom Allen, Dave Gorman, Jo Brand & Russell Howard) but we’re also proud to present some of the best new and emerging comedians as part of the festival as well as some exclusive events which can’t be seen anywhere else. In 2019 we’ve launched The UK Kids’ Comedy Festival – a new sister festival for families and children which will run throughout the Festival. With an ever growing programme of events aimed at families and children now seems the perfect time to launch this brand new festival. Leicester Comedy Festival is produced by registered charity Big Difference Company and our aims are to support new & emerging talent, celebrate British comedy and support comedians, promoters and venues to put on the best shows and events. We look forward to seeing you in February!

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club 2019 Season Preview By Phil Vose
Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club are looking forward to starting the new cricket season in April in the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. The first team will be playing in Division 4 Central after gaining promotion last season and the second team will be participating in Division 7 West. Joe Harris will again skipper the first team following a highly successful 2018 season. The 1st XI won Division 5 West and they will be welcoming teams like Mountsorrel Castle, Quorn and Birstall Village down at the Gynsill Lane ground. Anoop Jayaraj will be hoping to better his brilliant 604 runs from last year with Anil Revu and Joe Harris will be trying to better 30 wickets again for the season. The first team start their 2019 season at home to Kirby Muxloe 2 on Saturday 20th April. Anyone coming down to the ground will be given a warm welcome so why not come and see some fantastic cricketing action. Bradley Wells returns as second team captain following his first successful year during 2018. The second team will be hoping to build on last year’s promising campaign when they finished 6th in Division 7 West. They have a few new teams to play this season with matches against County Officers, Bardon Hill 2 and Newtown Linford 3 to look forward to. The second XI commence their matches with an away match against Braunstone on 20th April. Both teams will be hoping to have a successful season. In addition, the club will also be entering the Twenty20 County Shield and they will be hoping to emulate their victory in a local Sunday friendly league. During the winter, the players are attending nets at the City Cricket Academy based at Freemans Common – this started on Sunday 27th January and will continue until early April, every Sunday between 10am and 11am. Anyone looking for a new club then please come down and practice. Some of the club members will shortly be working down at the ground too helping to prepare it for the new season. During the off season, the club were extremely sad to learn of the passing away of Club President, John Sutherington. Unfortunately, John had endured a long illness, but he was still there supporting the team when the first team were crowned champions last September. Mr Sutherington had been involved with Anstey and Glenfield CC for over 40 years whereby he started off as a scorer as a teenager and then went on to be a very successful bowler. In recent years, John was the Chairman of the club for several years before being appointed the club President a few years ago. John was chosen as the Clubman of the Year for 2018 and tributes were made to John during the end of season presentation evening which took place in November. Matches in 2019 and beyond will no longer be the same without John or ‘Sutty’ as he is known cheering on the club from the pavilion. We are actively looking for new players of any age or ability, so if you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We will be hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground during the season, so if you’re interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com or our Facebook site for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.

FILM PRESENTATIONS
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council "Edie" was one of the best films that we have ever shown. The 85 year old was well portrayed by Sheila Hancock whose character fulfilled a long-held dream of climbing a Scottish mountain. We witnessed her outstanding perseverance in the face of exceptional storms. "Mamma Mia Here We Go Again" will be shown on February 8th and lasts 114 minutes. In this sequel to the popular musical comedy, Sophie prepares for the opening of the Hotel Bella Donna on a beautiful Greek island. However, her husband is working in New York with her father, played by Pierce Brosnan. Meryl Streep, Cher and Colin Firth feature in this entertaining and joyful performance. "The Children Act" will be shown on March 8th and lasts 105 minutes. In March's British drama, Dame Emma Thompson plays a high court family judge who can make life or death decisions. Having visited a very sick teenager in hospital, she must deliver a ruling as to whether he should be given a blood transfusion against his parents' wishes. The judge's workload is high but does this affect her marital relationship? "The Wife" will be shown on April 12th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost the usual £5 which will includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.
