Last week it was the Soar Valley Rotary team’s turn to produce the recording and pictured during the recording session in Rothley are Elizabeth and Ivan Brookes, Alastair Wood and Alan Meredith. This was then duplicated for CTN by Loughborough University and sent out free on a memory stick in a yellow pouch to listeners. When the listeners have finished with the recording, they put it back into the pouch, turn the label over on the pouch and post it back free to CTN. If you, or you know someone who would be interested in receiving this free service, then telephone Ann Parsons on 01509 232422 (mail@charnwoodties.co.uk) who will arrange for a CTN volunteer to ring you and arrange to deliver a simple to use mp3 player free and to put you onto the weekly mailing list. Not being able to keep up with local news and magazine articles can be very isolating so contact CTN soon – we look forward to hearing from you.

Telegraph Garden Expert comes to Newtown Linford

Swithland Show The hugely popular Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show will, again, be held at the usual venues of The Griffin Inn and Swithland School on Saturday 9th September. The show opens to visitors at 1.30pm.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club continues its series of celebrity visitors by inviting a renowned gardening journalist to speak. These events have proved very popular when experts with national reputations come to our village. On October 24th we welcome Helen Yemm who brings a wide range of knowledge and expertise to the platform. Daily Telegraph readers will readily identify with their regular gardening columnist; a post she has held for many years. Her expertise runs much further however. She lectured at the Coton Manor Gardening School for many years and was a presenter on the BBC2 programme ‘Gardening from Scratch.’ She has written several books on the subject of horticulture. These include ‘Grow Your Own Flowers’, ‘Thorny Problems’ a digest of the many letters to the Daily Telegraph asking for advice, and the interestingly titled work ‘Gardening in Your Nightie’. She is well-known as an interesting public speaker and we look forward to hearing a fascinating and varied talk. We are pleased to welcome visitors to this event and will also invite other local gardening clubs to join us. The event will be held in Newtown Linford Village Hall and begin at 7.30pm. Tickets, which will cost £10, can be obtained from the secretary by sending to 32 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester, LE6 0HH or by ringing 01530 242452. Alternatively you can send an email to 32couling@gmail.com to secure your ticket or acquire additional information. We are looking forward to another highly successful evening following on from the other well-known gardening experts who have visited us before.

Last years show, our 40th, was a huge success and we raised in excess of a staggering £9000.00 for our chosen charities which include Rainbows and LOROS plus many other local charities. For this we thank all of our visitors, contestants and sponsors.

Anne and David Couling

Alan & Sandra Smith

If you are planning to enter your exhibits into any of the classes available please do so on the morning of the show between 8.30 and 11.00am.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Alan and Sandra Smith celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on March 18th 2017. They were married at All Saints Church, Thurcaston, 50 years ago. Their wedding reception was held at The Crown Inn, Anstey and they have lived in the same house in Anstey since their wedding day.

Members’ visit to Herbert’s Meadow and Poultney Farm The first week of June is the best time of the year to find our native orchids in the Ulverscroft Valley. On a fine sunny morning 30 members of the Friends of Charnwood Forest set off from Poultney Farm on Priory Lane led by Kim Turner. To help us identify the local flora we were accompanied by Uta Hamzaoui, a conservation officer, and botany expert from the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.

Embroiderers' Guild Study Day Sunday 17th September The Embroiderers' Guild are holding a Study Day on Sunday 17th September 2017 at Thringstone Community Centre, The Green, Thringstone, Leicestershire LE67 8NR.

The first part of our walk was around Ulverscroft Pool, the source of the River Lin. The Pool was created by the Earl of Stamford as a fishing lake some 200 years ago by damming up the natural springs. The River Lin flows through Newtown Linford, Bradgate Park and into Cropston Reservoir. It is the shortest river in Leicestershire and home to brown trout and even lamprey.

Amongst the ancient wetlands surrounding the water are many rare species quite unique in the county including Pale Sedge and Flea Sedge. We strolled towards the SSSI sites which surround and include Herbert's Meadow owned by LRWT. These neutral grasslands contain a rich biodiversity of wildflowers, including three species of orchid. We first saw the reddish pink Fragrant orchid and then the paler common spotted orchid followed by the Heath spotted orchid. It is interesting to think that these fields are exactly as they would have been seen in Medieval times. Other good indicators of old grasslands are Great Burnet, Greater Bird's -foot-trefoil and Devil's-bit Scabious. This area of Charnwood Forest, with areas of acid soil, is home to Matt-grass which again is unique in Leicestershire. Our morning walk concluded with some light refreshments kindly provided by our host Kim Turner.

Secret Gardens in Boxes With Book Artist Paul Johnson

Box one contains an arbour with stand up topiary, shrubs, a canopy and surrounding pergola - made from a single sheet of paper. The second box could be a Japanese garden with tea house, bridge and lanterns etc., and a pop-up accordion book section can hold your own poem based on the theme.

Kantha Stitching with Gill Greany Traditional kanthas are made up of layers of discarded saris or cotton cloth sewn together with running stitch to create patterns and texture. During this workshop we will look at traditional kanthas from Bangladesh, Ralli quilts from the Sind Valley in Pakistan and some si

Rajastan and learn how to use the simple running stitch to enhance and decorate fabric.

If you are interested in any of the plants mentioned above, or wish to identify any wild flowers you find in Leicestershire and Rutland go to www.naturespot.org.uk/

Make a painting using layers of merino wool and enhancing it with silk or viscose fibres. This is an easy step by step workshop which is designed for you to have fun with different wools and experiment with colour and fibres.

Town Charity helps out This years grants meeting of the Anstey Town Charity saw the Trustees award almost £3,500 to eleven local groups and causes reports Ken Schofield, Clerk to the Trustees. They were pleased to receive applications from first time applicants and others who had not done so for some time. The main beneficiaries were the Anstey Gala and the Anstey Swifts Football Club who were each awarded £500. The Anstey Community Library, Anstey Branches of the Royal British Legion and WI were awarded £300 each. A new applicant was the Anstey Luncheon Club who were delighted to receive £250 towards taking their elderly members on outings. In recent years the Trustees have supported the two local primary schools by making a contribution to the cost of visiting the Warning Zone in Leicester where the children are made aware of dangers in the home and locality by hands on activities. In recent years they have included the risks of internet grooming and bullying. Other grantees included the Gynsil Lawn Tennis Club and Churches together in Anstey were awarded £150 towards their work with young people.

We Need Your Help.

Have you subscribed to the garden waste service? Around 30,000 subscribers to Charnwood Borough Council’s garden waste scheme will be sent stickers to place on their bins to make sure they are emptied. The stickers will be sent out from July and once the rollout is complete only brown garden bins with stickers on will be emptied. The Council is introducing the scheme to make sure only paid-for subscriptions are collected and that the service is operating as efficiently as possible. If you haven’t signed up for the service, you can do so at any time. It costs £28 for a 12-month subscription (when paid by direct debit), which is cheaper than the national average. Cllr Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “The garden waste service is extremely popular and we want to make sure it is running as efficiently as possible. “We are aware that some bins are being emptied that do not have a subscription. Some residents, often after they have moved into the borough, are unaware this is an extra service that they need to pay for. We want to tackle this and ensure there is a fair system for everyone. Please remember that in future, unless your garden bin has a Council-supplied sticker confirming you have paid for the service, it will not be emptied.”

We are often asked how we are able to help so many groups, where does your money come from? We are funded from our investments with the Charities Official Fund {COIF[]. However we are not allowed to re-invest this as our income must be awarded to the many worthy causes in Anstey. So we too rely on donations and grant.

The stickers are being sent out in phases to subscribers from July 3. The rollout is expected to take a few weeks. For more information, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/garden_waste_stickers

We are particularly grateful to the Anstey Parish Council and Anstey Christmas Gala who have been most generous in their support.

If you do not currently subscribe to the garden waste service and are interested in doing so, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 01509 634563. The scheme costs £28 a year (when paid by direct debit).

We seek to increase our investments in order to increase our income and so help more groups or award greater grants .If your group has been a beneficiary of a grant from us you may wish to help us with a donation. We are pleased to receive donations small or large. You could also consider leaving us a legacy, or in lieu of a celebration, a donation in memory of a loved one.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 24th May and 23rd June 2017 inclusive.

A Trio of New Motoring Laws – Are you aware? As of March 1st 2017, the government has introduced a trio of new motoring laws which every motorist in the UK should be aware of in order to stay on the right side of the law.

Number 2 - Speeding Fines

Crime Figures 24th May 2017 to 23rd June 2017 Burglary Dwelling – 1 Charnwood Road Burglary - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) Theft of Motor Vehicle – 0

Under the new rules, which were actually introduced on April 24th 2017, drivers can be charged up to 175% of their weekly wage. There is a cap of £1000 on minor speeding offences or up to £2500 for major ones.

Theft from Motor Vehicle - 7 (inc Attempts) – Hollow Road x 2, Latimer Street, Dalby Road, Stadon Road, Edward Street, Rosebery Road

A three band system will determine the severity of an offence and corresponds to different charges. These charges a calculated on a percentage basis. A minor offence constitutes a Band A charge.

Damage to Motor Vehicle – 1 Cropston Road

• Band A charges are for drivers who exceed the stated speed limit between 1 and 10mph. So, if a driver travels 31mph up to 40mph in a 30mph zone, they can be charged between 25% and 75% of their weekly income.

Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Gynsill Close

Theft Cycle – 0

Confused?? – Take away the confusion and just drive within the displayed speed limits!

Theft Property - 1 Link Road

Look out for motoring law number 3 next edition.

Deborah Taylor... Latest News Borough Councillor for Anstey & County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk & Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

A very busy month with lots of events happening in the local area, continued training at County Hall and the General Election but not enough hours in the day to cover it all. Thank you to everyone who took the time to come out and vote, even in the rain, the turnout in the Charnwood Constituency was over 70%. Just in case you have not heard the result, Edward Argar was re-elected as our MP with a majority of over 16,000 votes. I did manage to pop into the monthly coffee morning at the United Reformed Church Rooms, Anstey on Saturday 3rd June where there was also an excellent art exhibition. There were many works of art on display and some pieces for sale, all produced by our local residents. If anyone is interested, the art group meets every Tuesday at the United Reformed Church Rooms from 1pm until 3pm. New members are always welcome; the cost is £2 and there is no need to book, just turn up. I also attend the Royal British Legion Standard Rededication Service on Sunday 11th June at St Mary’s Church, Anstey. It was a lovely service with a chance again to remember all those lives lost in conflict. We also remembered the people lost in the recent terrorist attacks in the UK. The service finished with a small march past in Church lane. Thank you to all involved to mark this occasion. As County Councillor, I do try to visit as many of the Parish Council meetings as I can each month. I believe that we all need to work together to achieve the best we can for all our residents. I attended the annual Swithland Parish Meeting on Monday 19th June and thank them for their warm welcome that I received and it was nice to see so many residents in attendance as well. I have also managed to attend the monthly Parish meetings at Cropston and Thurcaston, Woodhouse, Newtown Linford and Anstey in June. I attended the Flag Raising Ceremony for our Armed Forces on Monday 19th June 2017 at County Hall. We also held a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for everyone affected by the terrorist attack at Finsbury Park and the tragic loss of life at Grenfell Tower in London. I must also add that my thoughts are with the victims and their families of the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London.

Fairhaven Farm Appeal I attended the hearing in Loughborough for

12

the above site concerning the original housing mix that proposed over 60% of the development as 4 bedroomed houses (refused by the Plans Committee in September 2016) on 25th May. Also in attendance was the Chairman of Anstey Parish Council and a handful of residents. The appeal hearing lasted all day and I went on the site visit with the Inspector once the written hearing had concluded. The Inspector did refer to the approved housing mix plan (approved by the Plans Committee in May 2017) for this site throughout the day and considered the differences between the two housing mixes. I was able to get all my points across, along with the residents and the Chairman and I felt we were all treated fairly. During the site visit, I was able to gain access to one of the gardens on Fairhaven Road to show the Inspector how close to the boundary the new development will be. I also pointed out the view to Bradgate Park and Old John in relation to the 2.5 storey dwellings proposed. I am hoping we should hear the result of the appeal hearing towards the middle to end of July. I will of course update you with the Inspector’s decision in my report and on my social media pages.

237 Bradgate Road The Planning Application for up to five houses at the above address was refused by Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) in December 2016. The developer than appealed the decision and the application was sent to the Planning Inspector for the Secretary of State to review the reasons for refusal. Officers at CBC have informed me that the appeal for the above site has been dismissed. The main reason for the Inspector in agreeing with CBC to refuse this application was that the proposal would cause significant harm to the character of the area and this would significantly and demonstrably outweigh the relatively modest benefits of the scheme. They stated that this area was much more a part of the countryside than it was residential gardens and dwellings.

Jelson Site, Anstey Following on from my previous reports, you will know that Jelsons started on site before their had discharged the relevant conditions allowing them to start development. Jelsons have now received approval from Charnwood Borough Council to discharge all of the conditions needed before development can begin. Jelson are now clear to precede with full development without breaching any planning control.

Conservation Area Just a gentle reminder to residents, following a few issues that have occurred in our area, to check if you live in a conservation area before carrying out any work to your house or garden. Conservation areas mean that some extra planning controls and considerations exist to protect the historic and architectural elements. They are most likely to affect owners who want to work on the outside of their building or do any work to trees on their property. Being in a conservation area might mean that your house is affected by special controls (called 'Article 4 Directions'), which restrict the work you can normally do without planning permission such as replacing a door, window or altering gutters and downpipes. These controls are tailored to each area by the council and are put in place when there are particular elements of local buildings they wish to protect. To find out if an Article 4 Direction applies to your area please contact your local planning authority (Charnwood Borough Council). If you want to cut down, top or lop any but the smallest of trees in a conservation area you must notify your local planning authority six weeks before work begins. The authority will then consider the contribution the tree makes to the character of the area.

Picnic in the Park Thank you to everyone that joined us on the recreation ground for Anstey Parish Council’s Picnic in the Park on Sunday 25th June. There was a great atmosphere, plenty of singing and dancing and we only had one very brief rain shower!

Garden Waste Around 30,000 subscribers to Charnwood Borough Council’s garden waste scheme will be sent stickers to place on their brown bins to make sure they are emptied. The stickers will be sent out from 3rd July and once the rollout is complete only brown garden bins with stickers displayed will be emptied. The Council is introducing this scheme to make sure only paid-for subscriptions are collected and that the service is operating as efficiently as possible. If you have not signed up for this service, you can do so at any time. For more information, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ garden_waste_stickers If you do not currently subscribe to the garden waste service and are interested in doing so, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ gardenwaste or call 01509 634563. scheme costs ÂŁ28 a year (when paid by direct debit).

Fire Safety Following the tragic fire at London’s Grenfell Tower in the early morning of 14th June Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) issued the following statement: “Clearly our thoughts are with the victims and families involved in the tragic fire in London. While we do not own any buildings of that kind of size we do possess some smaller blocks of flats and we understand if people are concerned about fire safety following this week’s incident. We would like to reassure our tenants that we stringently follow all national guidelines and regulations when it comes to fire safety in our properties. We conduct regular fire safety checks of our buildings and work with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue to ensure appropriate safety measures are in place. In flat blocks and sheltered accommodation, communal areas including stairwells and landings must be kept clear at all times to ensure the building is as easy to leave as possible. We would like to remind tenants about this and ask them not to leave any items in these areas. On the advice of Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, we do advise people of the ‘Stay Put’ policy. Should any guidance change around this or other fire safety policies we will clearly consider them under the advice of the fire service.â€? Advice from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service: If there is a fire in your flat/house. • Tell everyone in your home what the escape plan is and practise it. • Make sure exits are kept clear of obstructions • If it is too dangerous to follow your escape route because stairs and hallways are filled with smoke, ring 999 and stay inside the safest room. Keep the door closed and use towels or bedding at the bottom of the door to prevent any smoke entering the room.

fire and rescue service – DO NOT attempt to jump. • When leaving the building in the event of a fire, use the stairs and not the lift. • If there is a fire in another flat elsewhere in the building, you are normally safest in your own flat, UNLESS you are affected by heat or smoke in any way. • In the event of a fire, never assume that someone else has called the fire and rescue service. Make sure your neighbours know about the fire. Bang on their doors on your way out and once outside, call 999. As a Service, we use the Government’s national guidance on the ‘stay put’ policy when inspecting high rise buildings and

making any recommendations to building owners/responsible persons (landlords etc.) It is NOT implied that those who wish to leave the building should be prevented from doing so. Nor does this preclude those evacuating a flat that is on fire, from alerting their neighbours so that they can also escape if they feel threatened. "Our advice is if you are in any doubt, GET OUT, STAY OUT and DIAL 999. You can find further information and advice on fire safety in high-rise properties on the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service." If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Latest News Frrom om It’s the middle of a particularly t hot and dry British summer and, as I write this, it is around 30 degrees to leave any animal in a car but surprisingly some people just don’t think of the awful consequences. We have probably all, at some point or another, been aware of the campaigns and horror stories reportted in the media, yet still people need reminding that dogs die in hot cars. So as the temperatures soar, here her are a ffew things to bear in mind to ensure that your dog does not become a casualty of the heat. Don’t leave your dog alone in a car. If it’s very warm outside and you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what you are going to do with your dog when you get to your destination. It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it’s not that warm. In fact, when it’s 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within a short space of time. Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stufffy fy car, dogs can’t cool down so leaving a window open or a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Leaving a bowl of water for them in a car is also inefffectual fectual and wa water heats up quickly and often gets knocked over when a distressed dog is trying to get out of the situation. Under the Animal Welfare Act everyone has a legal duty to care for their animals and if they put an animal at risk, they could face prosecution. So, if you ever see a dog in a car on a warm day please call the Police on 999. The biggest danger to a dog in this situation is heatstroke, which can be fatal. Some dogs are more prone to heatstroke. For example, dogs with short snouts, fatter tter or heavily he muscled dogs and long-haired breeds, as well as very old or very young dogs are susceptible. A dog which is unable to reduce their body temperature, could develop heatstroke and here are some signs to look for: • Heavy panting • Profuse salivation • A rapid pulse • Very red gums/tongue • Lethargy • Lack of coordination • Reluctance or inability to rise affter ter collapsing • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • A loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances. If your dog shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move them immediately to a shaded, cool area and seek advice from your vet. Heatstroke should always be treated as an emergency. Dogs sufffering fering from fr heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature gradually lowered. Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. – You could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over

water and then place your dog in the breeze of a fan. Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water. Continue to douse them with cool water until their breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that they begin to shiver. Once you have cooled your dog down you should take them straight to the veterinary surgery g y for a check up up. We need to be aware however fer he heat in many other that dogs sufffer situations and we should, as pet owners, ensure that this risk is minimised. Here then are some tips for warm weather safety. • Your Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if they are feeling hot. • Iff you want to take tak your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly. • If you have to leave your dog outside, you should provide a cool shady spot where they can escape from the sun at all times of the day. • Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts. • Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day. • Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer and later in the season, if necessary. This also applies to those breeds that do not shed their coats – owners need to ensure the weight and thickness of coat do not add to the risk of heatstroke through correct clipping.

Sponsored S Co ommunity Dog Walk 2017

• Dogs need exercise - even when Walk your dog early e in the it is hot. Walk morning or later in the evening. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather and avoid pavement walks as this can cause burns to the pads. • Dogs can get sunburned too – partticularly those with light-coloured noses or light-coloured fur on their ears. Ask your vet for advice on petsafe sunscreen. We all like to enjoy the sunny weather and d our dogs are no difffer f ferent. t With a bit of planning and remembering the points above, we can ensure that the risks to the health and the lives of our dogs in the hot weather is reduced. Of course, much of the above advice applies to other pets as well – So please do what you can to ensure the safety of all pets during this hot spell. Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Invite you to a special evening in the company of

RHS Show at Chatsworth Members of the gardening club had been eagerly waiting this trip to the very first RHS Show at Chatsworth. It had been three years in the planning, with the combined might of the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) and the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire in the dramatic setting of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. By the day of the trip the traffic difficulties had been solved and even the weather had improved. This newest RHS Show had style and content unlike any of the existing RHS events. The show’s main theme was ‘Design Revolutionaries’ and celebrated not only the creative genius of gardeners from the past but talents, skills and creativity of the current and future gardeners. With the surrounding Derbyshire hills providing such a wonderful backdrop, the show stretched over both sides of the river bank with three new temporary bridges in place. There were show gardens, floral marquees and stalls and the usual host of refreshment kiosks, so essential for a good day out.

‘A show that broke gardening boundaries and blended tradition with innovative design “– this is the view from the RHS about the new show at Chatsworth. There were show gardens that incorporated local crafts and skills such as dry stone walling and farming; gardens that reflected the Derbyshire country side with streams, hills and even local mining was represented. All calling on ‘Inspiration and Innovation’ as a focus. A new category ‘FreeForm’ encouraged unusual designs and experimental features by budding new designers for visitors to enjoy, with giant insects formed from willow; lines of small reflective flags shimmering in the wind, and a very realistic rock fall. Like other RHS events, there was a significant local community involvement, local schools and community groups had created some fantastic ‘bug hotels’; working with the theme ‘Greening Grey Britain.’ As always there were many stunning flower displays, but a centrepiece of the whole show was a reworking of the original Joseph Paxton glasshouse. On this occasion the stunning curved shape was created with plastic tenting and hydraulics, and contained a magnificent display of tropical planting. In all a fantastic show in a wonderful setting; as with any new venture there are bound to be a few hitches, but the powers that be had obviously worked hard to iron those out by Day 3 of the show…… we loved it and we’ll be back for more another year.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Oh my goodness what a difficult month for us all? The terrible incidents in both London and Manchester, plus the recent awful fire at Grenfell House Flats. My heart goes out to all those who have been affected. I did sign the book of condolence at Charnwood Borough Council, both from myself and on behalf of Anstey. The promised full public enquiry over the fire will hopefully come up with resolutions that will be quickly acted upon. Not when funds are available. Life is too precious. I see that Leicester City Council is to put sprinkler systems in all there high rise flats in the City. Well done to Sir Peter Soulsby and Co. On a lighter note you will see that we seem to have an outdoor swimming pool in the Nook Anstey, where the island used to be? The workmen will be back to complete the work during the main school holidays. And NO it will NOT be replaced by 2 smaller islands. Honestly. Hopefully the new scheme will make traffic flow better. We shall see…

NEW YOUTH SHELTER Youngsters will see there is new shelter on the recreation ground at Stadon Road. Anstey. The old one which was built for them to shelter in was constantly abused, even set on fire twice!!! So the parish council have decided to convert it into storage space. Look after the new one boys and girls because there won’t be any more money for some time for another. I did say to the kids who were using the shelter that if they kept trying to wreck it then we would take it off them, sadly that’s what has happened. Sometimes it makes you wonder…

GENERAL ELECTION I won’t say too much because there maybe another one soon! We the voters have really put the cat amongst the pigeons haven’t we? It was sad to see Nick Clegg go but he was very dignified in is downfall speech. What will happen to the new government and how long it will last who knows? Congratulations to our MP Edward Argar who was returned to serve a second term for Charnwood. He clocked 33,318 votes and had a majority of 16,341 over Labours Sean Kelly-Walsh 16,977. Liberal Democrat Simon Sansome who was very ill in hospital for most of the campaign came 3rd 2,052. Victoria Conner UKIP 1471. Nick Cox. Greens. 1,036. Stephen Denham BNP 322 votes. Former Cabinet minister Nicky Morgan was re-elected for Loughborough, 27,022. Borough Councillor Jewel Miah Labour did

RENT OWING? Yes a Lot! The 2016/17 rent income for dwellings was 1% lower than 2015/16 (except for tenants in sheltered accommodation) due to changes in Government policy. Void loss was 2.19% against a budget of 2.2%. Dwelling Rent income was £67K under budget. Right to buy sales were budgeted at 40 sales, compared with 61 actual sales. As at 31 March 2017 rent arrears were £897K. This is attributable to rent arrears of £819K and court costs of £78K compared to £866K and £52K respectively in 2015/16. As a percentage of dwelling rents the total arrears including court costs is 3.74% compared with 3.88% in 2015/16. The amount of Housing Revenue Account debt written off in the year was £226K. Ü«? Compared to £221K in 2015/16. Needless to say the overview scrutiny group were very surprised at this amount of rent owing, and asked if improvements to the collection of rent arrears could be looked into and lowered. I will keep a watchful eye to see if things do just that… Times they are a changing…

I WAS THERE Since my last report I have attended St. Marys Church Anstey to be part of the Leicestershire & Rutland Royal British Legions 60th annual standard bearers’ association rededication service. The service took place at 3pm on Sunday June 11th and was conducted by the Rector: Rev David McDonough. Flag bearers from various RBL’s throughout the county were in attendance. Refreshments were served at the Stadon Club after a short march up Bradgate Road and down Church Lane.

RIP. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM… Sadly I have to report that Anstey’s Flag bearer for many years Mr Graham Baum as since suddenly passed away. This is the third loss incurred by the Anstey branch of the British Legion in recent times. James “Jim” Taylor dying only a few weeks ago. And Ron Spencer a little while back. All will be sadly missed.

ARMED FORCES DAY Again I attended the flag raising ceremony at Loughborough Town hall on Monday June 19th at 10am. Speeches were made by a

As well as representatives from the armed forces there were also a number of veterans on parade. MP Nicky Morgan and her husband Jonathan. Deputy Leader of Charnwood B.C.

COUNCILLOR RESIGNS Cllr. Robert Sharp has resigned as a Borough Councillor. Robert was the Labour party deputy leader and Borough Councillor for Loughborough Shelthorpe, until his resignation. Labour leader at Charnwood BC. Cllr. Jewel Miah has confirmed that Cllr. Maynard-Smith will be the new Deputy Leader of the Labour Group. A by-election should be held soon. Robert had been a Borough Councillor for more than five years.

FLY TIPPING Some will perhaps remember me going on a bit about new charges introduced by County hall, coming into force at our local refuse tips and I foresaw an increase in fly tipping? Well blow me down; looking through the Leicester Mercury recently I saw that a local authority, not far away from here has announced an increase in fly tipping in their area. I say no more…

BUSKATEERS. At it again… Also on parade recently with their latest charity event at Anstey Nomads Football Club, when we raised £180 to help with the running cost at Anstey’s Library. A great night out again, full house, but very hot. Thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to a fun packed evening. A special thankyou to Geoff Preston for his continued support. Next “do” will be on Friday September 8th Make a date in your diary. 8pm to midnight. Speedy recovery to Jenny who had a nasty fall at the end of the evening which required medical attention a

lot of stitches and a night in the Royal infirmary. The Buskateers have sent her some flowers. Well done to Nomads Russ Preston-Hayes who looked after Jenny until the paramedics arrived.

PICNIC IN THE PARK Fresh from Anstey’s 2nd PIP I am writing to thank all those who came to this on Sunday 25th June. Not as many as we thought but those who were there thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the weather was fine so where were you all… the attentive picnickers listened, sang along, and danced to the lovely Lizzy Rushby. Leicester’s own Dame Vera Lynn, who sang songs from WW2 and some C & W classics. Technaudio Disco was there. Plus again the BUSKATEERS who kept the audience awake with a wild array of tunes from ELO to Elvis, Neil Diamond and Cab Calaway! Even a spontaneous rendition of Cliff Richards “Livin Doll” with no accompaniment! When Lizzy had some technical problems.

Watermead Challenge 2017

Watermead Challenge 2017 SURFACE DRESSING Leicestershire county council will be spending over £2.5million on surface dressing this summer to help prevent potholes when the winter comes. In our little area there will be improvements in both Woodhouse & Thurcaston. Please give us a call if you have a problem. If I don’t know the answer I can usually find someone who does. ALWAYS A PLEASURE, NEVER A CHORE.

Yours Cllr. John J. Sutherington

This year’s Watermead Challenge charity run is being held at 7pm on Tuesday 11th July 2017. There are the usual five and three mile courses. Race Director, Chris Battye commented “the two distances appeal to a range of abilities from novice runners to the more experienced. The flat lakeside course is popular as it offers the chance to achieve a personal best time.” This year’s proceeds will be shared between the Leicester Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) and Loughborough based Mosaic Disability Services.

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society For the June meeting, members of the Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society visited the Record Office in Wigston, where our guide was archivist Jess Jenkins. The Record Office is a service provided by Leicestershire County Council in partnership with Leicester City Council and Rutland County Council. Its purpose is to collect and make available a wide range of resources for researching the history and culture of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. The collection dates back to the 1100’s and continues to grow. The Record Office moved from New Walk to its present site in Wigston in 1992. It amalgamated with the local studies library so that everything relating to the history of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland was housed under one roof. Jess provided a variety of documents and books for us to look at. The oldest document

we saw was a transfer of title of land in Saddington dating from around 1230 AD, written in Latin on parchment and with a large wax seal attached. A number related to Thurcaston and Cropston including records from the Archdeaconry of Leicester of 1517, showing the will of Everard Falkener of Thurcaston. Another was a 17th century accounts book which held the church accounts at the front and those of the village constable at the back, as both offices were held by the same man.

being shown: the microfiche readers and computer terminals which members of the public can use for their own research; the strong-room, with over 10km of shelving, in which the documents are stored in a controlled environment (pleasantly cool on a hot evening!); and the map room where we were given the opportunity to look at some local maps which concluded a most interesting evening. For more details of the collection and services provided, visit their website: www.leics.gov.uk/recordoffice

Other notable items included: a record of a lion brought into Loughborough that killed a man; 1813 Marriage Records from Ashby-dela-Zouch showing the marriages of a number of French prisoners of war to local girls; Burial Records of 1609 documenting plague burials; a page from the Admission Records for the Leicester Poor Law Union dated 29th December, 1879 noting the admission of Joseph Merrick (later known as the Elephant Man); and 1916 details of the Zeppelin raids when bombs were dropped on Loughborough killing10 and injuring at least 12 people.

Our summer programme continues with A Walk around Loughborough on Tuesday 18th July, starting outside the Library in Granby Street at 7.30pm. (booking useful but not essential).

ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY This month we had an inspirational talk from volunteer Peter Gee-Pemberton about the Air Ambulance for Children (a yellow Agusta helicopter), which is the only one of its kind in this country, based at Coventry Airport. The same charity also provides two helicopters for call out to emergencies for adults. Where time is of the essence and/or where an NHS ambulance would have difficulty in reaching the patient, the speed and benefits of the service have been clearly proven. The equipment and staff chosen are also the best. This unique service for young children provides an on-board Intensive Care Unit, along with two highly trained paramedics, and has been invaluable in providing urgent treatment to infants as soon as they are collected, and before they reach the hospital considered most suitable for their particular condition. A special incubator/bed costing many thousands of pounds to develop was in fact donated to the charity by the suppliers. The main problem came in finding room to build it into a restricted space already festooned with electric cabling, etc.! One critically ill infant was airlifted from the Isle of Wight and transferred to a mainland hospital for immediate heart surgery, having already been “prepped” by the specialists on the way. Any ambulance travelling by road will take longer than the helicopter, which can fly in a straight line at up to 185 mph, but the

geographical problems of crossing stretches of water can also add greatly to the journey time. Not all hospitals can provide a suitable landing site for a helicopter but Nottingham, for instance, are planning to do this in the near future. Failing a dedicated landing platform, the helicopter has to land nearby and transfer the patient to a waiting ambulance for the last part of the journey. Another case involved a dash to save a baby who was one of premature twins, with a combined weight of only 6 pounds. He had bronchial problems, and was airlifted from Margate to a specialised children’s hospital in London during rush hour.

people as motorbike clubs, who raise a lot of money for them, and there are also shops in Hinckley and Ashby-de-la-Zouch. One source of income is used clothing, which may no longer be wearable but can be sold by weight. One family went on holiday with their sixmonth-old child, and heard her scream in the night. She was grey and not breathing. The Air Ambulance took her to hospital in Cambridge, where doctors realised she had liver problems and heart problems, and it was then decided to transfer her to Leeds for open heart surgery. All three children mentioned are now doing well, and prove the value of such a service. Unfortunately, it can only help about one in three people who may need it. It is hoped to expand the service in the near future with another helicopter, to be based at East Midlands Airport. They receive no financial aid from the Government and are totally dependent on charitable donations.

The helicopters only fly in daylight hours. Pilots are often ex-military men, or with mountain rescue experience. Two pilots always travel on these missions, because it may have to go very long distances indeed; there is a legal limit on the number of consecutive flying hours for one person. The paramedics are critical care specialists, usually ex-NHS ambulance men, who then undergo higher levels of training. If the child cannot be moved, hospitals like Addenbrookes may send out their own specialists who are picked up by the helicopter and taken to the child instead.

Our meetings are held on the second Monday of each month starting at 2.15pm. On 10th July we have a Strawberry Cream Tea in Rothley, and 14th August brings a talk on “Scam Awareness”. Then on 11th September we have our Harvest Festival bring-and-buy, which is always enjoyable, plus a guest speaker. Visitors and new members most welcome (please see local posters for details).

It costs around £2,000 per journey, and only slightly less for the adult air ambulances. The charity has received great support from such
