At Woolden Hill we really believe that it is important for children to have exciting learning opportunities so they are enthusiastic and are keen to apply their knowledge and understanding in real life experiences. We have a great curriculum to help achieve this, but this term we have also been focusing on how we can best use our outdoor space to enhance learning further.

We were very fortunate to have Avant Homes come and support us for their ‘Day to Make a Difference’ event. We had 31 staff members on site to help revamp our pond area so that we can use it to support our science curriculum. They also created a fabulous flower bed at the front of the school in our logo design. We would not have been able to achieve these wonderful things without them and our children have already reaped the benefits in their latest pond dipping work. Thank you very much Avant Homes!

We have also created our very own memory garden. This is a special place that is dedicated in remembrance of a former pupil who sadly passed away last year. Marcus’ garden was opened on Friday 14th June by his family and friends and will be a place that our pupils can go to if they need to remember a loved one. Our Emotional Literacy Support Worker will be using it in her work to support pupils who have faced bereavement but it will also be a place to celebrate all the wonderful things about Marcus too.

Community Events As you may be aware, Woolden Hill is open from 7:30am -7:00pm three nights per week. This is due to our Wrap Around Care for pupils until 5:45pm and then we host three community clubs. Our adult classes in Boxercise and Circuit Training are becoming increasing popular and our Gymnastics club for children is also growing in numbers too. If you would like more information about these clubs, please contact our school office – 01162362154.

Holiday Camp returns! We will also be running our popular Summer Holiday Camp from 29th July - 23rd August. Prices start from £10 per day and can be booked through the school office. Bookings must be made by 8th July so get your place soon!

Woolden Hill Association (WHA) Our wonderful Woolden Hill Association has been working tirelessly again for us and have given us a range of wonderful experiences. Our Summer Fair was on 22nd June and was a huge success! With a dog show; vintage afternoon tea; tractor; climbing wall; animal handling; tombola; sponges at Mr Chapple and a cash prize raffle there was so much to do!

# Our Forest school also continues to be a huge success! Miss Rumble is a lead Forest School practitioner and has worked tirelessly to create a forest school on our site. We have our own forest area for den making, hammock swings and tree climbing, fire pit for cooking on and to singing songs around and tool shed for working with wood. Santander have kindly helped us to develop the area and supported with donations of tools and equipment to ensure that the children can get ‘stuck in’ to their learning up there. It is so lovely to see children develop their confidence and teamwork skills in the area and I can’t wait to see it grow even more in the new school year.

Thank you to Asda at Abby Lane, The Space Centre, Stonehurst Farm, Leicester City Football Club and 360 Soft Play for supporting the event. Finally, the event would not be successful if you didn’t attend so thank you to all of our community members who we able to support us.

A big thank you! We have been overwhelmed with our positive response to community events recently and the number of parents and community members who have visited our school. We are oversubscribed for school places and this is partly due to the positive messages we have received in the village about our fabulous school. I would like to say from the bottom of my heart a huge thank you for continuing to support Woolden Hill School. I wish you all a wonderful summer break and look forward to sharing more exciting plans with you very soon! With warm regards, Sarah Sadler, Headteacher

Edward Argar MP

Cropston Cricket Club are organising a past players’ day.

Member of Parliament for Charnwood "As Brexit (and leadership contests), understandably, continue to dominate the political agenda, our media headlines, and everyday conversations, although I normally keep my focus in these articles on local matter, I believe it is important on this occasion that I give readers of the Anstey & Bradgate Local a brief update on my views on Brexit. While, with the PM's resignation, things have changed in recent weeks and it will be for the new PM to set out their approach to delivering Brexit, as many of you will be aware, I have been consistently clear that the result of the referendum must be accepted, respected, and delivered on, with the UK leaving the EU. As those who check my voting record will see, I have voted to respect the referendum result and deliver Brexit at every possible opportunity in Parliament. I will continue to work hard in Parliament, with a new PM, to ensure that Brexit is delivered. However, we must also not lose sight of local issues, which remain equally as important – one of which is the vital work being done to protect and enhance our environment. I was saddened to hear that a discarded plastic carrier bag led to the death of a young deer in Bradgate Park a couple of months ago. A number of constituents have also written to me recently, to express their concerns about the environment more generally. It is an important reminder to us all, that litter dropping can have terrible consequences for the local wildlife, particularly in the Charnwood constituency, with a number of beautiful open spaces that we are all proud of. We must enjoy these areas responsibly and remember that we all have a duty to take care of the environment, and the animals that call it home.

We are looking to contact anybody who has played for the club in the past. Whether you played a handful of games for the under 13s or hundreds of games for the 1st XI we are keen to see you. The event will take place on Saturday August 24th at our Waterfield Road ground in Cropston. The 1st XI have a home Premier division fixture against Syston which starts at 12.30 so why not come along, meet some old friends and see some cricket. For further details please contact the club secretary, Brad Peake, on 07777 649412.

Our natural environment, air quality, open spaces, wildlife, all matter to Anstey and the Bradgate villages, just as they do to the whole Charnwood constituency, but a healthy natural environment is something we cannot simply take for granted. We all hold our planet in trust for future generations so, while at a national and international level I am pleased the Government is continuing to strengthen our environmental protections, and as a generation are working to ensure we leave our environment and wildlife in a better state than we found it, we also all have our own small, but important, roles to play in protecting our natural environment, from reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away; to re-using things where we can; to recycling when we can’t; and whenever we are out and about in Anstey, Newtown Linford, and the villages by putting our litter in the bin or taking it home. Working together, we can not only protect but improve our environment. As always, if you ever feel that I can be of assistance to you in any way as your local MP, or would like to invite me to a community event, please get in touch with me using the following email address: edward.argar.mp@parliament.uk. Alternatively, you can write to me at: Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.

ANSTEY WI

Summer Season at Bradgate Park

Anstey WI are very grateful to the Anstey Town Charity for a grant for IT training. The first session has already taken place.

The Ruins of Bradgate Park House, in the centre of Bradgate Park are set to be the backdrop for a Summer Season of outdoor performances from national and local companies and performers, providing unforgettable memories of open air theatre and live music in Leicestershire’s favourite Park

There was a last minute change of speaker at the June meeting. Claire Weddell kindly agreed to bring forward her visit, originally planned for next year. She now works for Freedom From Violence and Abuse, having started with Women’s Aid. She took her audience through a timeline of legislation on domestic violence, starting with the rule of thumb, introduced in 1857. This stated that a husband may beat his wife, so long as the rod was no thicker than the base of a man’s thumb. Thank heavens we live in more enlightened times! After discussion of examples of cruelty and abuse it was concluded that such behaviour is all about control, and affects men as well as women. Claire was presented with a stash of toiletries for the women and children who often arrive at refuges with nothing. The WI’s craft group plans to make washbags for them, too. The competition this month was for a flower arrangement in a cup and saucer, to be given to someone who is ill or upset. Marian Driver came 1st, with Liz Heggs 2nd and Sheila Price 3rd.

The 2019 season in August offers a great variety of opportunities, with the popular Bradgate Park Proms Spectacular, followed by the Acoustic Folk picnic, alongside daytime family theatre in the summer holidays.

The following day, Sunday 18th August, the Ruins act as a venue for the third Acoustic Folk Picnic. The Acoustic Folk Picnic is a family friendly day in the walled Ruins and this year will see seven sets across the day, which starts at 12 and finishes at 7.45pm. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic, relax and enjoy a great day of music that includes local and award-winning national artists.

Daytime family theatre is returning to Bradgate Park on the 7th and 8th August with Quantum Theatre’s adaptation of Wind in the Willows. The daytime performances are at 2pm on Thursday August 8th and at 11 and 2.30 on Friday August 9th. Their shows deliver a magical event for young and old alike taking them back to the tales of their childhood in a show designed to appeal to all the family. With recent interest in the Wind in the Willows puppets’ return after 30 years’ absence and a new film, the performances will be a popular summer day out. The Park’s Explore project volunteers also offer an added treat of free activities.

The Charity’s fundraiser has been lucky to gain support from musicians who will also be performing including Ruby Doos; Dave Kirk; Daryl Kirkland; The Jigantics (acoustic); David Wyatt/Andy Wale Acoustic and Harriet Endersby. Headlining the day is the Jim Moray Trio. Jim Moray is amongst England’s finest interpreters of traditional song. A five-time BBC Folk Award winner, his songs have been featured in a season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, he has appeared onscreen singing a specially composed song for Dr Who spin-off Class as aliens attack the earth, and he has presented documentaries on traditional music for BBC Radio 3.

On the evening of Thursday August 8th Quantum Theatre will also be performing an adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic A Mid Summer Night’s Dream. The performance starts 7pm and with the opportunity to access the Ruins an hour before performances start - it is a great way to spend a summer’s evening.

Peter Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Park Trust, said, “The Ruins are a perfect venue for a great event within the Park. Our Summer Season of shows and performances offers something for everyone. ”

The Proms Spectacular will feature a concert with Leicestershire’s Bardi Wind Orchestra on Saturday 17th August. The evening of popular and traditional music will thrill and entertain the whole family. The Ruins open from 5.30pm allowing people to enjoy a picnic in this magnificent location. The concert will show a lighter side of the symphonic band’s repertoire with selections from shows, the movies, TV themes and pop music, as well as the traditional sea shanties and proms music that thrill and engage audiences. Starting at

For all music and theatre events doors open an hour before the performance starts, so audiences can bring a picnic and their own rugs or seating. Events happen whatever the weather. Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

Member Grant Scheme Last year you may recall I alerted community groups in my Ward about the Charnwood Borough Council’s Member Grant Scheme. This to help local groups and organisations within individual Councillor’s Wards deliver projects that benefit local people. I was delighted to help two groups last year, therefore, I am pleased to announce that the Member Grant Scheme is available again this council year to help deliver projects within my Ward, which includes the villages of Newtown Linford, Ulverscroft, Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves. Each Borough Councillor has been allocated £1,000 to award to community projects. Grants can be given to several projects, the minimum amount being £250 and the maximum the full £1,000. All groups need to do is contact me and tell me about your project, if it has potential, then simply fill in the application form on the Charnwood Borough Council website and it will be taken forward. There is a criteria and all applications will be checked by officers at the Council. The important thing is to contact me first. There is more information on the Council’s website, just visit www.charnwood.gov.uk /pages/member_grants. Charnwood Borough Council also have a number of grants which support communities for this information visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodgrants.

Police Information Charnwood Policing area has a new Police Neighbourhood Commander, Inspector Mark Botte. I have already asked him for help with a local issue of anti-social behaviour in Woodhouse Eaves. All agencies are now aware of this problem, I am hopeful this will now have a satisfactory outcome. Inspector Botte has attended both Woodhouse and Newtown Linford Parish Council meetings. I was pleased to hear how

he intends to communicate with local communities, especially Neighbourhood Watch Groups. He also made reference to Neighbourhood Link, the Police Community Messaging System. To receive the latest news, updates and events information go to www.neighbourhoodlink.co.uk. By signing up to Neighbourhood Link you can find out about policing issues in your community, get the latest crime reduction and community safety advice and respond directly to your Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Roecliffe Road I responded to a consultation by the County Council about reducing the speed limit to 50mph on Shepshed Road and Joe Moores Lane. I asked if this could be extended to Roecliffe Road, reducing the 50mph speed limit to 40mph adjacent to the entrance to Bradgate Park. This was due to concerns raised by residents about the speed of traffic and vehicles parked on the highway whilst people visit Bradgate. I have received a response which included the following statement: The Police enforce speed limits and they would need to support a reduction of the speed limit to 40mph. One of the main factors considered for reducing speed limits is the number of injury accidents which is the purpose for these proposals. Thankfully there is only one slight accident on this stretch of road. Taking the above into consideration we would not consider reducing the speed limit further on this stretch of road. Since receiving this response, it has been brought to my attention that another accident has occurred, resulting in the Police having to close the road for a couple of hours. I have again responded with this extra information, including a photograph of a number of parked cars on the highway. I do believe with these changing circumstances

I am still receiving complaints about inconsiderate vehicle parking within the village of Newtown Linford whilst people visit Bradgate Park. The majority of issues raised are along the Main Street, where people are parking across drives or so close to entrances that the sight lines are poor when entering onto Main Street causing highway safety problems. I discussed this issue at the last Parish Council meeting where it was agreed to complete further work on this issue, especially involving residents, to understand more fully the number of residents affected, the locations within the village and possible solutions to the current situation. I understand benefits have been seen since the double yellow lines on Bradgate Road and the ‘H’ white lines on Grey Crescent have been introduced.

Partnership with Serco Charnwood Borough Council has signed a new deal with long-term waste partners Serco, to ensure the area remains clean and tidy for years to come. The partnership has been in place for the last 10 years and this new contract will extend the partnership for another four years. Serco is responsible for collecting all the refuse and recycling from the Borough’s 75,000 homes as well as servicing more than 30,000 customers of the Council’s garden waste service. The operation means emptying household bins around five million times a year. Serco will also continue to sweep more than 540 miles of the Borough’s roads and empty around 900 litter bins.

Planning Application Maplewell Road Charnwood Borough Council has just received details from the Planning Inspectorate about the appeal to refuse planning permission to build up to 50 dwellings on land adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. It is proposed to hold the

ANSTEY CHESS CLUB AGM - Things you need to know. On Thursday 30th May, we held our first ever AGM (minutes will be visible on our website soon!) and a number of things were decided. What our loving public need to know is two things: 1) We have decided as a club to go for two teams this year. Primarily this article and word of mouth on the County chess circuit has meant that recruitment of new members has increased and we are hoping to be competitive with our two teams. 2) We are now having our club nights on WEDNESDAYS for all future club nights and home matches. (PS. If Wednesday is bad for you, we will still have away matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so please do not be put off!) Website - A slightly sour note to report for this, unfortunately. The very generous and well received donation to the club by the people of Anstey bought a year subscription to the website - or so I thought. All the time the website was unused was apparently still chargeable. The people of Anstey's donation has only lasted a month or two. I am currently contesting this with the website hosts as I write. I'll let you know the outcome. Sponsors? - Is there/are there any person(s) that would like to sponsor Anstey Chess Club? We have a website where we can feature your company's website (for instance) or for other donations, I can create a page on our website entitled 'With thanks' or similar. Please let us know on the details below if you may be

interested. Free Chess Sessions - We are still running informal sessions for beginners or slightly more experienced players on Saturday mornings from 11am-2pm, with the help of The Stadon Sports and Social Club. Please note the venue change - for now. These sessions are for anybody that would like to learn to play chess, has some experience playing chess, or already knows how to play and would like to play some friendly games. These sessions are still free of charge and I would like to try and keep it that way. I have worked with the Anstey Library for a long time but they have now levied a charge on us to use their room. Wherever the Saturday Club is held, my services will be free. We are going to try the sessions at the Stadon for a while. Please call me if you'd like to attend or are interested in doing so, or you can turn up and play! PS- Bacon cobs for £1.50 on Saturday lunchtimes go a long way!! July Club Nights/Fixtures - At the time of writing (24/6/19), we have the 2nd round of the Chapman Cup on Wednesday 26th where we will be at home against Market Harborough's 2nd team. We had another simul against a leading county player too but this time, we all lost. The opponent was John Naylor - to give you an idea of strength, I am graded ECF135 - he is graded ECF212 - Grandmasters are somewhere around ECF240 - so he's not far from GM level. I was really excited to play

against such a strong opponent and he took the time to explain where we all went wrong individually after the game. It was a wonderful experience, capped by the fact that John is such a nice guy. I have tried to be a little creative on club nights so I have done time odds matches (where ore experienced players get less time against less experienced) and doubles nights - players are paired up and play alternate moves against the clock. These tend to be fairly hectic - but a lot of fun! Feel free to come and join us! Why not come and join us on a club night? Our club nights are now on Wednesdays now! Club Nights tend to be relaxed and quite often, we do a little bit of coaching with our league players. When players have lost, drawn or maybe even won, myself and Mick Sandham give the players practical advice on what they could/should have done. We then usually move on to playing some friendlies amongst ourselves. League matches are a little more intense and require the room to be silent or very little ambient noise. You are welcome along on any night so please pop along to see what we're all about. New players are welcome along at any time regardless of standard.

Deborah Taylor... Latest News County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 - Email: Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

I have been attending a few training sessions at Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council over the last few weeks. I also attended the first Police and Crime Panel of the council year with many new faces from other Districts around the table so I am hopeful that this will be holding the Police and Crime Commissioner to account well. I also attended the Swithland Parish Meeting on 5th June 2019 and I have taken away a few issues to deal with. Swithland is also suffering from speeding vehicles and inconsiderate parking as are many of the rural villages within my Division. I am working closely with the council and the police to try and reduce this speeding traffic. On Friday 14th June I attended my first East Midlands Lead Members Meeting in Melton Mowbray. This brings together all the Lead Members for Children and Family service together from the East Midlands to share good practice and to look at ways of tackling similar problems at a national level. I paid a visit to Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College on Thursday 20th June. As you are aware from my previous reports, the college is due to close in September 2021. Speaking to the Principle, Peter Middleton, he confirmed it was a difficult time for staff and pupils at the college, but he was pleased to confirm the college was fully staffed for next year. On Saturday 22nd June I attended the Armed Forces Day Service at Leicester Cathedral. It was a well-attended service and finished with the Armed Forces Parade from the Cathedral to Church Gate in Leicester. The weather was lovely and warm, and the parade route was fully lined with people enjoying the parade.

On Monday 24th June I attended the Armed Forces Flag Raising at Stand Easy at County Hall. It was again, a well-attended event, but a bit chilly! The children from The Hall Primary School read the poem ‘I Must Return’ by Sergeant Frank J Wawrynovic beautifully. The Armed Forces Flag was raised by Mr Gerald Posnett who is aged 100 and joined the 7th Battalion of Leicestershire Regiment in 1940.

and out of the Bradgate Park car parks within 15 minutes, even when the car parks are not busy. On street parking was also part of the survey. A further report is expected in September to fully understand the parking habits of people visiting Bradgate Park and the effect that this has on Newtown Linford residents. I hope to provide further details once the report is completed.

Major Consultation Launched on Council Priorities

The Director of Bradgate Park Trust, Peter Tyldesley, has offered his resignation.

Residents can shape the future plans and priorities of Leicestershire County Council (LCC) by getting involved in a major consultation that has just been launched. Residents are being urged to have their say by completing a short questionnaire and they can also use an interactive, online tool to try balancing the council’s £370m revenue budget.

Proposed Mandatory School Keep Clear Markings

Despite saving £200m since 2010, rising demand for services pushing up costs and uncertainty over Government funding mean that the council still faces a significant financial challenge. The council needs to save another £75m over the next four years and is therefore running a three-month consultation asking residents, businesses and partner organisations for their views on the significant financial challenge. The 12-week exercise runs until 8th September 2019 and includes: ➢ A questionnaire - sent to households in a special edition of residents’ newsletter Leicestershire Matters ➢ An online, interactive tool enabling people to explore the council’s budget in more detail ➢ Residents focus groups ➢ Workshops with parish councils, NHS bodies, the police, businesses and other stakeholders ➢ Workshops with council staff and managers ➢ Stands at events across the county Further details are on the website: https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/news/major -consultation-launched-on-priorities

Bradgate Park A Parking survey was carried out in Newtown Linford by LCC over the Easter weekend. The first results have been presented to the Bradgate Park Trust but further analysis of the data will enable the implications of the current and future parking/charging regimes on the wider local community to be considered. The first data shows that the majority of visitors stay for 1-3 hours per visit and many cars drive in

Leicestershire County Council are proposing to formalise the school ‘Keep Clear’ markings in my Division at the schools listed below by making them mandatory. The restriction will apply Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. ➢ Richard Hill Primary School - Anstey Lane, Thurcaston ➢ Newtown Linford Primary School Main Street, Newtown Linford The restriction will apply Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm at the school below: ➢ The Latimer Primary School, Latimer Street, Anstey The school ‘Keep Clear’ road markings are intended to highlight the key areas that should be kept clear for the safety of our school children. If no objections are received to the proposals by the end of June the ‘Keep Clear’ markings will become mandatory and fines will be issued for parking on the ‘Keep Clear’ markings.

Annual Reports All members are required to submit an annual report every year to highlight the areas of work they have been involved in throughout the year. I have submitted my report and it is on my personal page on the LCC website if anyone is interested in reading it. The link to my page is: http://politics.leics.gov. uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=6671 If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Report from Anstey Parish Council Updates - Following the recent May elections there are a number of new Councillors and two vacancies which should hopefully be filled at the end of June meeting. This means there should be a full complement of members with half of the Councillors being new to the role. This will bring a new dynamic to the Council with new members deciding which committees they wish to stand on and what they hope to achieve during their time in office. The following are the summaries from the Events and Project & Ground Committee meetings which both met in May. Events Committee - Councillor Vicky Ball has again being voted in as Chairman of this Committee for the forthcoming year. There are a number of events that this committee is responsible for and are currently working on. Unfortunately, the party in the in the park scheduled for the beginning of July has been cancelled. There has not been enough time to organise the details for this event since the elections in May. The hanging baskets around the village have now been put up and we hope these will provide good floral displays around the village. Further planting of flowers has taken place at the bottom green, the war memorial and outside the cemetery. The Committee will be hosting an event for the elderly, aged 90+, to be held in December. This should be an enjoyable and festive event if you or a relatives of yours would be interested in attending please let us have contact details at the parish office (0116) 236 2646. Project & Grounds Committee This committee is chaired by Councillor Sue Billington. At the May meeting the priorities for 2019 / 2020 were decided as detailed below; Short term projects • Land at Groby Road – To finalised the land transfer at Groby Road as part of the section 106 agreement with Davidsons Homes. The public open spaces within the housing development the play area as well as the cemetery extension, allotment site and attenuation ponds will all transfer to

the Parish Council. • Re-Location of the bus stop – To look into the possibility of re-locating the bus stop on Leicester Road. Money has been given by Bloor Homes to look into this possibility. Medium term projects • New facilities at Jubilee Hall for Community Groups including the Scouts. In recognition that the Scouts building on Leicester Road needs a considerable amount of money spent on it, the Parish Council are looking at the possibility of relocating these facility to the Jubilee Hall. • Affordable housing – There is a sum of money associated with the Gynsill Lane development for affordable housing APC is working to ensure that this money is spent locally. • New Peace Garden – The current peace garden is 50 years old and quite full. A design for a new garden has been approved by Council and is currently out for tender. • Public Art for Groby Road Estate – This planning obligation is part of the conditions for the Davidson Homes Groby Road Estate. A sum of £5,000.00 has been given to the parish council to complete this project. The artwork, a mosaic leaf which will stand on the Green on Summerfield Drive is currently under construction. This artwork will be installed when the land has been transferred. • Reaccreditation for Local Council Award Scheme – Anstey PC was the 8th Council in the Country to be awarded the highest standard ‘Quality Gold’ under the Local Council Award Scheme in 2015. The renewal of this is due in December 2019 and the Council are working towards having everything in place to submit for reaccreditation under the schemes strict criteria. Long term projects • Neighbourhood plan – The Committee have received a presentation from the Rural Community Council about a

• Facilities at Link Road Playing Field – To consider access onto the playing field at Link Road and how best the Parish Council can enhance this area of public open space. All of the above priories feed into the business plan that is being considered for adoption at the meeting at the end of June. Community Speed Watch - Although Anstey PC recently advertised for people to come forward to take part in a Community Speed Watch we have receive no new interests from residents. Unfortunately at this time we are unable to take this project forward due to lack of interest. If people do want to register their interests in becoming involved in a local speed watch group please do contact us at the parish office. Anstey’s own antiques roadshow

Don’t miss the chance to discover if you have treasure in the attic...

F

ROM Coventry to Cape Town, antiques expert Andy Elton has been putting a price on family heirlooms and forgotten relics for over 40 years... and now he’s coming to Anstey.

The founder of Bentley’s UK - which sets up shop in the Anstey - is just the man to make your dreams come true – or let you down gently. “A lot of people are very unsure as to the worth of their items, which may have been stored for years in cupboards, lofts, garages and even garden sheds,â€? says Andy. “Others are convinced they’re bringing something that’s worth a fortune. “You can open a box and know you’re not going WR Ć“QG DQ\WKLQJ RI YDOXH %XW WKH\Ĺ?UH VKRZLQJ \RX something that is part of their heritage – you’ve got to be diplomatic.â€? On the other hand, Andy is in a position to break some very welcome news: “One gentleman had a Rolex Submariner watch, which had lain unworn in a cupboard since it was given to him by his uncle. He was amazed when I offered him ÂŁ5000. “Then there was the time in South Africa when someone came along with a dusty bronze which turned out to be a rare work by the sculptor Anton Van Wouw – I valued that at ÂŁ10,000.â€?

He’s always been interested in antiques and jewellery and has worked with two of the major auction houses in London and another in Nottingham. But he prefers to be his own boss. “I’ve travelled all over the UK and I regularly go to South Africa, meeting thousands of people along the way, he says.

Andy prides himself on offering a fair price: “I treat people as I would want to be treated myself, he says.

“You come across some wonderful stories; I love hearing about how grandad got his medals.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club “Colour in the Leaf A talk by Anthony Norman The speaker at the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club in June was Anthony Norman, with a talk called “Colour in the Leaf. Anthony owns the family run Conquest Nurseries in Macclesfield which specialises in the growing of variegated and coloured foliage hardy plants. The talk ‘Colour in the Leaf’ covers Anthony’s unique specialism of growing variegated and coloured foliage plants. The presentation detailed the extensive range of variegated and coloured foliage plants available and the special considerations and benefits when using them in the garden.

The talk included many well-known species of plants, but varieties that are all variegated or contain colour in the leaf. Variegated and colour foliage plants are mutations of natural species. These plants are available to grow in any garden situation from sun to full shade, wet or dry conditions, and clay or sandy soils. They bring a strong focal point to an area using plain green foliage as a background. Yellow foliage plants work well planted at a distance away from the viewing point. Some benefit from being grown in semi shade. They help to light up a dull area and variegation creates a similar effect. Purple foliage plants need to be planted near to a viewing point and in a sunny position as do silver plants. Orange foliage plants are good as spot plants to create contrasts and focal points.

This talk was packed with information and it held members interest throughout. Anthony’s knowledge and expertise were very evident, and he was able to get his points across with pace and humour. At the end of the talk, members took the opportunity to examine and buy many of the wide selection of plants that Anthony had brought from his nursery. The Gardening Club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will find something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. What’s more, it’s excellent value!! The membership fee is still only £12 for the year (pro rata) or £3.00 per meeting. So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try. For more information please contact Dave Haddon (0116) 235 9758: david.haddon20@ntlworld.com Or Richard Elks (0116 236 8313): cropston161@hotmail.co.uk

The next club events are: Wednesday 10 July, 7.00pm Group planting of grasses to give a strong design element

Golden foliage shrub border showing different leaf shapes

This was an illustrated talk with many excellent photographs. Anthony also provided a list of all the plants mentioned in his talk. This contained not only the plant name, but also information about height, flowering times, preferred aspect, habit, and other useful information to help us get the best from each plant. Anthony’s talk elaborated on these points.

Children taking part in the Challenge will join our super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Challenge celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

I’m getting married this month (gulp), and at some point, between the moment of proposing and now, I apparently took leave of my sense and volunteered to grow all the flowers. What was I thinking? Never mind my speech and the first dance - the need to have fresh blooms ready for midsummer has been nerve-wracking.

I had little previous experience with cut flowers and it’s been a steep learning curve. But (and I won’t say it too loudly in case they hear me) all the flowers are doing emarkably well and, aided by a mild winter and an early spring, should be ready just in time.

Honeywort

So, based on my recent horticultural adventures, here are some recommendations for fantastic cut flowers. All those listed below are hardy annuals and were sown direct or planted out in the autumn, giving them a real head start on spring sown flowers. Here are the best performers: • Larkspur - Annual Delphiniums with the most beautiful and abundant blooms. Would be great to fill gaps in a mixed border. ‘Giant Imperial Mixed’ is a hit. • Cornflowers - An old favourite but so pretty if a mixed-colour cultivar is chosen. Remarkable difference with autumn sown plants – they’re almost over my head! • Cerinthe major (Honeywort) - I've never seen as many bees in one place as when my honeywort started flowering. Intriguing, drooping, intensely purple flowers. • Linaria maroccana (Toadflax) - Started flowering in March and are, sadly, already past their best, but had to have a mention because they’re just so lovely. Lots of cultivars available – all pretty versions of the plant that often appears as a weed. ‘Licillia Azure’ was particularly impressive. JULY TIP – At this time of year it's useful to be reminded that the garden isn't just about hard work. Grab a deck chair and a gin and tonic, and go and sit amongst the blooms.

How it works - Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.

Stairlift Superheroes Step Into Action!

Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there's a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge.

The Coalville-based stairlift company launched their refurbished stairlift donation scheme in January this year to help people in times of desperate need. Having a stairlift installed can provide a comfortable solution on a short or long term basis and give someone the freedom and independence back in their home. Although not a huge expense, a stairlift is still a cost which some people may struggle to afford. After donating 2 stairlifts in 2018 as part of a competition during the popular Heather Scarecrow Festival, Candor decided to donate a stairlift every month throughout 2019 to someone that will really benefit.

The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school aged children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers.

Candor Care are continuing to give back to the local community by offering a donation of a reconditioned stairlift every month to someone to help improve their mobility.

Candor Care will be donating a fully refurbished stairlift to someone in need every month throughout 2019. To register your interest for a friend or family member that might be in need, email - info@candorcare.co.uk or send a message through Candor Care’s facebook page. Terms and conditions apply and all applications are given careful consideration before response. Candor Care can only offer this for straight staircases with no twists or turns.

POLICE MATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ From the NL58 and NL56 Neighbourhood Policing team

Good News NL56 beat - On the 20th May 2019 at 22:43 an incident was called in at Newtown Linford regarding antisocial behaviour (glass bottles being smashed in the car park). Vehicle details were taken and warning letters were sent to those involved. The purpose of the letter is to ensure the owner/users of the vehicles are fully informed, warned and are aware of potential consequences that antisocial behaviour has. Good News NL58 beat - We have had a few reports of antisocial behavior regarding motorbikes being ridden in the Anstey area recently. From officers accounts we managed to identify one perpetrator and a section 59 was issued. Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 allows us to issue a notice to vehicles which are causing alarm, distress or annoyance to others. The notice counts as a warning for the perpetrator and if they continue to drive in an antisocial way then the vehicle will be seized.

New NPA Commander - We would like to welcome our new NPA Commander for Charnwood, Inspector Mark Botte. We would also like to thank Inspector Dwight Barker, who was the previous commander, for all his help over the years and wish him good luck in his new role. Inspector Mark Botte took up his new role at the beginning of May having previously been a Priority and Resource Inspector. He replaces Inspector Dwight Barker who has moved to the Local Policing Directorate in a support role. Mark joined the force 21 years ago and has worked in uniformed roles across Leicestershire Police including the old Welford Road station, along with Mansfield House and Spinney Hill stations. He said: “It’s a real privilege to become Charnwood’s new NPA Commander.

As I have previously lived in the area myself, it’s a role I have aspired to have since the start of my policing career and for that reason I feel an extra sense of responsibility to the Charnwood community.” “We have strong links with our partnership organisations and I aim to ensure this continues so that we can tackle any issues jointly.” “I know we have a committed team of officers who are working hard to make sure our community is a safe and pleasant place to live.” Inspector Dwight Barker added: “It’s been a pleasure to serve the people of Charnwood. I’ve really enjoyed working with the community to solve as many of the key problems as possible. It has been one of my favourite roles that I’ve been lucky enough to experience within my police career and I will take away a number of fond memories. However, I know I leave the NPA in very capable hands. Inspector Botte has a wealth of experience and is passionate about neighbourhood policing.”

Another Great President’s Day for Anstey Rugby Club Back on Sunday 5th May we held our annual President’s Day at our Home Ground on Link Road where a squad of twenty players from around the County came to challenge our team. Anstey had a strong squad with several replacements and a large crowd of loyal supporters. The game was played hard but in the good spirit of President’s Day with Anstey running out winners by 42 points to 29. Thanks to Ian Pollock for refereeing the game. The great rugby atmosphere continued from the late afternoon until very late at night at The Coach and Horses. As is traditional our players put on a huge spread of food devoured by the President’s Team and their supporters, then our players, spouses and supporters, finally the remaining customers in the pub. Our host Caroline Holt (on her birthday) laid on a bouncy castle for the little ones and later on a Karaoke for various people who can’t sing and even some that could! ‘Boat Races’ and other drinking games abounded in the outside patio area and as ever everyone enjoyed a great day for the club. On 8th June a large contingent made their way into Leicester for our annual dinner at Altro Mondo where we all enjoyed a huge four cource meal and presentations of the various awards including Fin Splevings winning the ‘Young Player of the Year’ Shield, Alex Robinson winning Most Improved Player’, Andrew Pollock ‘First Team Player’ and Liam Curtis a most deserved ‘Clubman of The Year’ More singing? and dancing? followed - another great rugby night. Season number 40 is just round the corner for your village club. As ever we would welcome YOU to join us. At the Coach and Horses, go through the door nearest the car park, round to your left is our clubhouse decorated with a selection of old and new pictures and mementoes we have collected over the years when touring. Anstey RFC are always ready to welcome new players, experienced or not. As well as playing, the positive social life that goes with Rugby Union is well known. Apart from that, playing the game will help get you fit. All players both new or regular, experienced or total novices, fit or unfit, old or young are all welcome. Training takes place on Wednesday evenings at our Link Road ground. Matches are on Saturdays kicking off at 3pm with the new season starting in late August Sponsorship from local companies would be most welcome. If you would like to support the club contact any committee member for details. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses pub in the Nook in Anstey. Or call our Captain Liam Curtis on 07727 118362 Or visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey or our Facebook Group Page at www.facebook.com/groups/20694012567

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

“Walking the West Highland Way” A large group of us listened avidly to Mrs Wendy Martin, as she explained that she and her husband had completed walking the WHW in Scotland, which is about 96 miles or 154 km in total, including some steep ascents. Her achievement is even more remarkable because only a year beforehand, Mrs Martin had had a hip replacement, but she was determined to exercise and regain her strength in order to complete the walk. Some friends had done this walk, and she wanted to raise money for the charity Send a Cow, which helps poor families in several African countries. She studied her Trailblazer guide beforehand and decided to record her daily activities for a lecture presentation, and the publishers kindly allowed her to include their map information for this purpose. She also armed herself with a protective head net and a variety of midge repellents like Skin so Soft by Avon, plus Smidge from Sainsburys, which proved very effective, although others in the group did get bitten. The group of 12 including the knowledgeable and reliable guide met in Glasgow; among them a couple of visitors from overseas who had come specially to do this walk. Everyone got on pretty well, as the days went by. Day 1 - Milngavie to Drymen brought pleasant weather with spectacular scenery, and the route was well marked. There were always lots of wild flowers including the rampant Himalayan balsam, whose seeds explode everywhere when ripe. Sadly the walkers had no time to visit Glengoyne Distillery nearby, but they liked the carving of a woman walker with her dog further along. The walkers’ path and the cycleway follow similar routes. The first two nights were spent at the Buchanan Arms hotel. A hired van transported their belongings between overnight stops, so they only needed to carry their day sacks with sandwich lunches. Day 2 - Drymen to Rowardennan included a serious ascent up Conic Hill. One lady refused to go up and stayed minding their rucksacks,

until she realised that the people coming down towards her were blind people with guides! As soon as someone from her group came back she went up too. Balmaha provided a lunch stop, and they saw a statue of Tom Weir, who was a TV broadcaster for many years and received an award for his conservation work around Loch Lomond. Day 3 - Rowardennan to Ardlui. They went through beautiful oak woodland, but it was raining and very muddy. There are some wild goats around which are quite smelly. They passed what is reputed to be Rob Roy’s cave, and came to a bothy where itinerant workers used to stay overnight, now used by walkers. It is very basic accommodation, and you are supposed to respect it and leave more firewood for the next person. There is a memorial to teacher Bill Lobban, who sadly lost his life saving two children from drowning. Part way along the Loch shore there was a sign for the Ardlui ferry --- if it happens to be on the other side of the Loch, you hoist an orange ball up to the top of a tall pole to signal it to collect you. There was a carving of an eagle nearby. They spent two nights at Ardlui. Day 4 - Ardlui to Tyndrum. Wendy’s husband had injured his nose so the photos here show him in plasters! They climbed Cnap Mor and saw different wild flowers including orchids. A farm with wigwams commemorated the old drovers’ routes when they took their animals to market. Next came a coniferous forest and the ruins of St. Fillan’s monastery; the burn running along below it is said to be the setting for Sir Walter Scott’s Monan’s rill in “The Lady of the Lake”. Rob Roy is supposed to have thrown his heavy sword into the loch whilst being pursued by his enemies, but nobody has managed to find it yet. Day 5 - Tyndrum to Inveroran follows an old military road. These were usually built by the English to subdue the rebellious Scots, with varying success! They stopped at the Bridge of Orchy hotel, on the route of the Caledonian Sleeper train; the river was full and very fast

flowing. Drying rooms are provided in most accommodation. They came across a foolproof weather forecasting stone, which included advice such as if the stone was wet, it was raining; and if it was white, it was snowing! Day 6 - Inveroran to Kingshouse was a very exposed 10 mile stretch across Rannoch Moor; railway workers achieved the impossible in laying tracks across this boggy landscape in the 1890s. Near Baa Bridge there is a cairn in memory of Ian Fleming’s brother, Peter, who died in 1971. Day 7 - Kingshouse to Kinlochleven involved negotiating the Devil’s Staircase, but again the route is well marked. This is the highest part of the WHW, over 500 metres above sea level. One enterprising young man was providing snacks in the middle of nowhere from a van. There was a very important aluminium smelting works at Kinlochleven for many years, but the site has now been decontaminated and today acts as the National Centre for Ice Climbing. It has even won a Green Apple award from Friends of the Earth. At the hotel, owned by the tour company HF, they enjoyed the ceremony of piping in the haggis, with traditional poems being read aloud and Scottish dancing to follow. Day 8 - Kinlochleven to Fort William, a long stretch but a good path through the Mamores Range. They also saw the site of the infamous Glencoe massacre in February 1692. Originally the WHW ended just before you go into Fort William, but it has now been extended; walkers are lured a little further so that they can buy some local goods before they depart for home! The last mile going along the main road was not so pleasant, but they were amused to see the Wishing Stone, an “erratic boulder” left by a glacier, which may have magical powers to answer questions and grant wishes. Mrs Martin’s final photos included a group picture taken near the statue known as “Sore Feet”, by David Annand. She concluded that they had all had a good time --- no blisters! --- and told us she had managed to raise over £1,100 for her charity. The talk ended with questions from the appreciative audience and a chance to look at her souvenirs, and make a donation if desired.

(Note: There is a lot of helpful information online about the WHW for walkers, and the history of the area, which is worth reading.) Our meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. On 8th July we shall again enjoy a reasonably priced Strawberry Tea at the Blue Bell Inn, Rothley. On 12th August we welcome a speaker from the Benefits Advice and Advocacy service, who can help people who may have had an accident, for example. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Bradgate Rotary Club go litterpicking in Anstey Members of Bradgate Rotary carried out a litter-picking session in Anstey on Wednesday 26th June. Armed with litter-pickers and bin bags, the Rotarians gathered up litter in several areas of the village, concentrating on some of the ‘hotspots’ suggested by the Parish Council. An hour’s work generated over 15 kilos of litter.

Thurcaston Brownies Go Exploring Five activities were required for the Brownies to gain the Explore stage 2 skills builder badge. So we learned what clothes and shoes to wear to keep cosy and comfortable in The Outdoors, learned how to tightly roll a sleeping bag to fit back in its small bag and had races to pack rucksacks correctly. We also learned about mapping and how to make your own compass. These activities we put in practice for orienteering on the permanent courses in Castle Hill Park, Anstey. (Thanks to Leicestershire Orienteering Club leioc.org.uk) Brownies, leaders, mums, dads and dogs thoroughly enjoyed our evening walk in The Outwoods looking at the wonderful Sculpture Trail, spotting the tiny tree people and tying ribbons, on which we had written ‘positive thoughts’, to the giant willow weave globe. See photo.

1

In the intervening weeks we were making craft items for the Thurcaston Village Show which will take place in early September. These included weaving wool onto sticks to make Mexican God’s Eyes and creating Yogurt Pot People. We had a stall at Thurcaston church fete which was held inside because of the awful weather. The rain did not dampen our spirits and we raised nearly £40 for the church and Salvation Army. It was lovely to see brave teddies, unicorns, meerkats and a bright green gorilla zooming down the zip wire from the bell tower down towards the choir stalls. There was warming music from the band such as ‘You are my Sunshine’ as outside we could see the rain dripping from the gutters. Although Cropston Guides had closed (due to falling numbers) at the end of 2018, one of the Guides, Molly Dawson, had earned the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. This involved completing the ‘volunteering’, ‘keeping fit’ and ‘learning new skills’ sections of the award. She also endured/enjoyed practice and assessed expeditions each involving carrying all the kit and food for two days of walking and an overnight camp. However, the official presentation of Molly’s Bronze Award did not take place until May 9th 2019 when she received the award from Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness. Well done Molly we are proud of you.

“It was well worth doing,” said Rotary member, Claire Costello. “We’re planning to organise regular litter-picking sessions in all of the six local villages, including Anstey, covered by our club.”

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have started the 2019 season and had a fantastic start to the Summer. The first team play in Division 4 Central following last year’s promotion with the second team participating in Division 7 West. Both teams are looking to have successful seasons and to continue their rise through the Leicestershire league divisions - they will be looking forward to some competitive cricket ahead. The first team have started life in Division 4 Central in mixed fashion and at the time of writing, they are sitting in 5th place but are only 5 points behind 3rd place so with good potential to climb the table in the next few weeks. Victories so far have been gained against Leicester Ivanhoe 3, Mountsorrel Castle, Quorn and Enderby 2. The outstanding individual performance of the season so far was by Shehan Perera at Quorn. He scored a brilliant 118 with the bat and then Shehan produced a thrilling bowling spell by taking 4 wickets for 18 runs. The only other half century has come from Viral Patel when he scored 64 against Kirby Muxloe 2 on the first day of the season. The bowlers have had a better time of things with Charlie Wilkes, Anil Revu and Joe Harris all being in double figures. In fact, Charlie and Anil have both taken 4

wicket hauls against Highfield and Mountsorrel respectively. Positive results will be sought throughout the rest of the season to try and ensure that they finish in the upper echelons of the table. Its been a fantastic season so far for the second XI. They are currently top of the table with 7 wins from 10 matches and 2 of those were abandoned due to the weather. The team have been led superbly by Bradley Wells. Victories have been gained against Braunstone, Newtown Linford 3, Barrow 3, County Officers, Mahers 2, Loughborough Greenfields 2 and Bardon Hill 2 with the only defeat coming against Barwell 2. The match against Barwell was notable due to a magnificent innings from Newan Dhashana who scored an outstanding 183 not out. In total, 594 runs were scored in the whole match in what was a thrilling affair. Half centuries have also been scored by Niall Simpson (3 matches), Darren Morris (2 occasions) and Newan notched 71 not out against Nahers. The bowlers have been doing well too with Newan, Bradley and Niall all having good displays. They will be hoping to maintain the winning results over the next few weeks to maintain their pole position. The club have been playing a few Sunday

friendlies with matches against Dunton Bassett, Countesthorpe and Ibstock to date. A team from the club will also be entered in the Twenty20 County Shield this season with the Gynsill Lane club looking to regain the trophy they won in 2015. Saturday morning has been a busy time down at the ground with the club hosting All Stars Cricket sessions. It has been great to see youngsters aged between 5 and 8 learning some of the basics of the game and taking part in some excellent sessions. The club would like to thank some of its members who have given up some of their valuable time by volunteering their services to supervise the lively youngsters. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We are hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground on Wednesdays from 5.30pm, so if you’re interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com and Facebook page for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.

Deborah Taylor & Paul Baines… Borough Councillors for Anstey Latest News Deborah Taylor 6 Geary Close, Anstey, LE7 7LW Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Tel: 0116 2350126 - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor

Member Grants Charnwood Borough Council’s Member Grants Scheme is now up and running for the second year, enabling Councillors to provide grants to a wide variety of community and voluntary organisations within their Ward area of Charnwood. Each borough councillor has been allocated an annual budget of £1,000 which can be used to support projects that bring benefits to the residents of their wards. In Anstey you have two borough councillors, so we have £2,000 available. Organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood are invited to apply for a minimum of £250 per member, up to a maximum of £1,000 per member and applications may be made to more than one member. All the details and criteria are available on the link below: https://www.charnwood.gov. uk/pages/member_grants We have decided to have four blocks of £250 each. Any organisation can apply for as many blocks as they want from each of us or jointly between us. All applications will then be discussed between us to ensure we use the funds for the greatest effect. Please ensure you contact us first to discuss your project to ensure that it is something we would be willing to support before submitting your application form to Charnwood Borough Council. We have already had a few enquiries and we look forward to receiving further applications in the coming weeks from worthy groups and good causes in Anstey, which help to make Anstey a better place to live, work and socialise.

Scrutiny Meetings Charnwood Borough Council have changed how they run their scrutiny meetings at the Borough. Three new scrutiny committees are headed up by the Scrutiny Commission. The three scrutiny committees are: ➢

Housing, Planning and Regeneration, and Regulatory Services Scrutiny Committee

Neighbourhoods and Community Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee

Corporate Services Scrutiny Committee

Paul is Vice-Chairman of the Corporate Services Scrutiny Committee and therefore also sits on the Scrutiny Commission. Deborah is the Lead Member for Communities, Wellbeing and Safety and therefore is

required to attend the Neighbourhoods and Community Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee to answer any questions elected members ask. These meetings are open meetings, meaning any member of the public can attend any of the meetings except where the committee agree to go into a private session for a sensitive item on the agenda. Charnwood Borough Council are eager for more residents to be involved in these committees. We would both welcome residents to attend some meetings, to find out more about the work of the council and to submit any questions that they would like answered. Please contact either of us if you require further information. Details of all the meetings and the dates are on the website under this link: www.charnwood.gov.uk/committees

Post Office We have been working with the owner of the Post Office building and the tenants who rent the two stores. We have had several incidents of people being hit by cars whilst they are waiting to cross the road and on the pedestrian crossing outside the Post Office. This is due to cars reversing out of the space in front of the Post Office and not seeing the pedestrians. We have made enquiries with the County Council Highway Department and have been informed that the only legal space to park in that area is the space on the right-hand side as you look at the building. This area belongs to the owner of the building and not the council. Any person crossing the pavement and parking there is parking illegally and can be fined. We are trying to work with the owner and tenants to block off these spaces to make the area safe, but we would like to request that nobody parks in that area and instead uses the car parks and parking bays in The Nook to visit the Post Office.

Co-Op Shop You may have noticed the scaffolding around the old Co-Op travel shop over the last couple of weeks. As promised during our election campaign, we have been pushing the letting agents for a couple of months now to understand why the shop has been left empty and unmaintained. We think the letting agents now understand that the village is unhappy with the state of the shop. We have also contacted the CEO of the Co-Operative Group for further information to understand the plans going forward to see if there is anything else we can do to support

the Co-Op. As this shop is privately owned we have no powers to control what happens, but we will continue to put pressure on the letting agents and the Co-Operative Group to get the shop into a good state of repair and let out. Theft - On Friday 21st June between 6.30pm and 7.00pm, a woman was stopped from stealing a carrier bag full of meat by the store’s security staff, but the thief managed to get away. These kinds of thefts are happening regularly. Did you witness this incident and know who this was? If so, please report this incident to our local police beat team, PCSO’s Ali Cochrane (6556) and Mitch Jarvis (6093) or ring 101 and if you witness any future suspicious activity in-store, please report this to store staff immediately.

Council Cabinet Cllr Jonathan Morgan has announced the new Cabinet for the 2019/20 year. There have been a few tweaks and below is the list of all members and their area of responsibility: ➢

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society

'Good Grief' free pop-up cafe, Feelgood Farm, Anstey

In 1830, the mine owners of NW Leicestershire faced a problem. They wanted to use the new technology of railways to bring their coal to the lucrative market in Leicester but in their way was the hill on which County Hall and Glenfield Hospital now stand. It was much too steep for early locomotives to climb and was even too steep for a stationary engine to haul the wagons up an inclined plane, as had been done at Swannington and Bagworth. They consulted the famous engineer George Stephenson, who designed what was then the longest steam railway tunnel in the world and recommended his son Robert to build it. The tunnel is just over a mile long. It was built straight and level, based on existing models from the canal network but at a larger scale to accommodate trains. “Navviesâ€? dug the tunnel from both ends and from shafts sunk along the route. Smaller ventilation shafts were provided at intervals and now make interesting features in the gardens above! Surveyors expected that the tunnel would pass through rock but instead they found soft sand so the entire length had to be lined using locally made bricks. The dimensions of the tunnel were always a limitation, from the opening ceremony when the funnel of the locomotive hit the roof, broke and covered the travelling dignitaries in soot! In later years it became difficult to find rolling stock small enough to fit: with only a few inches of clearance, speeds were limited to 4 mph so it took trains 15 minutes to pass through. Although Glenfield Tunnel closed to rail traffic in 1966, it still exists and members of our Society were able to visit, thanks to the Leicestershire Industrial History Society. We walked about Âź mile from the entrance to the first excavation shaft and our guide pointed out features of interest along the way, such as refuges where workers could avoid passing trains, and evidence of when Plessey and Marconi briefly used the tunnel for testing after its closure.

The next free pop-up cafe for grief and loss, including suicide bereavement, is 2-4pm Friday 12 July. This follows similar events in May and June. It's good to talk, listen, share feelings, have a cuppa, with others who understand. There's laughter too. Grief is growth, and a natural part of life. There's a cafe space, lounge, and courtyard garden in good weather. Any questions call Alan: 07907 961408 or email: ac@alanchapman.com. Or see feelgoodfarm.co.uk

If you would like to visit the tunnel, there are public tours each weekend in July as part of the Festival of Archaeology (http://leicsfieldworkers.co.uk/festival-of-archaeology/), which includes many other events of historical interest too. Our next event will be a heritage walk around Cropston. Meet outside the Badger’s Sett at 7.00pm on Tuesday 20th August. All welcome (no charge). www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk
