Newtown Linford Gardening Club THE ARCHERY BIG WEEKEND 16 & 17 JUNE Bob Flowerdew comes to Newtown Linford
Bob Flowerdew’s visit as one of our garden club’s celebrity evenings proved to be one of the most successful. This genial and very friendly man with his trademark pony tail (it even acted as a place to clip his lapel mike!) entertained a packed hall with his thoughts on the benefits of organic gardening. He emphasised the advantages of using well-rotted manure for vegetables over commercially produced fertilisers explaining to us that the difference in taste is very noticeable. He even told us that his children didn’t like his carrots as much as supermarket ones because they are too carroty!! Using no visual aids, he spoke about his passion for organic horticulture and kept his audience hooked for the full 75 minutes and for the questions which followed. He probably did not convert everyone to his way of thinking, but he certainly left us with plenty to think about. Afterwards he mixed with the members and guests, signed books and answered individual questions with great charm. The visit of famous gardening experts to our club has now become a regular fixture and it is much appreciated by our members and the visitors who come to join us. Our next celebrity evening is on Tuesday October 23rd when our guest speaker will be Bunny Guinness. She is very well-known as a horticultural broadcaster and writer, who appears regularly on the radio programme Gardeners’ Question Time. This should prove to be an equally entertaining evening and we, again, invite visitors to come and hear her speak. Tickets are available now and can be obtained by ringing 01530 242452 or emailing us on 32couling@gmail.com. As usual, numbers are restricted because of hall size so tickets will be issued on a ‘first come first served’ basis. We look forward to seeing you all again.
David Couling We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail (32couling@gmail.com) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello everybody, another month and crikey it’s not rained for well over a week! Is it time to bring back drought Minister from the 1970’s MP Dennis Howell? Lots has been happening including my 10 minutes of fame on Radio Leicester with Helen McCarthy and BBC Midlands today with Jo Healey both with reference to my “Scam.” I think I made sense but having been rushed back to hospital just after the TV team left my house, I didn’t get to see or hear any of the interviews. They put me in a room with a TV that was broken! I have taken Santander to task over the “Scam” but as of yet apart from their standard letter I have heard nothing. So much for their response time, it has now been over 30 days since I last heard from them! It feels like big multi national Bank v little me, but I am not one for giving up… • Wasn’t the royal wedding from St. Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle between Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle lovely? We really are the only country in the world that can carry out these sorts of occasions. Smashing! I should feel relieved and so should we all that President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jon Un, will be meeting shortly. However they both can be very outspoken and perhaps say things before their brain is in gear? President Trump has said “We will both try to make it a very special moment for world peace.” The history making meeting to discuss mainly denuclearisation is due to take place on June 12th. Let us hope and pray these 2 loose cannons can come to some kind of agreement for the safety of us all. • Stunning! Leicestershire County cricket Club have WON a 4 day championship game! Their first one for 2 seasons against Glamorgan. (who were the last team they beat) they then went and saw off Northants in a 50 over game. I feel a civic reception coming on. Hopefully under the guidance of the “never give in” attitude of chief coach Paul Nixon things may be on the “UP” at Grace Road. • Cllr.Christine Harris. New Mayor of Charnwood. Councillor Christine Harris was appointed as the borough’s first citizen on Monday May 21st. at the council’s annual meeting at Loughborough Town Hall. Cllr Harris, the former Deputy Mayor, will attend around 500 events over the coming 12 months. The Mayor said: “I am proud and honoured to have received the role of Mayor and am looking forward to this year when I can serve the residents of the borough of Charnwood. I have lived in Loughborough all
6
my life and therefore know Charnwood very well”. The Mayor, who has been a borough councillor for 23 years, has chosen two causes to support during her year of office. They are Sense, a national disability charity that began by supporting those who are deafblind, and the Woodland Trust, which protects and campaigns on behalf of this country’s woods, plants trees and restores ancient woodlands. If you would like to donate to any of these charities then ring the mayor’s office at Charnwood Borough Council. The Mayor will be supported during her year of office by Mayoress, Cynthia BradleyStevenson who has lived in Loughborough for most of her life. Outgoing Mayor, Cllr Pauline Ranson supported two causes during her year of office, Myaware and Loughborough Wellbeing Café. A total of £12,621 was raised for the causes. Retiring Mayor Cllr Ranson, who attended hundreds of community events with her consort, husband Trevor Ranson, said “I have had such a wonderful year and have met so many fantastic people in the Charnwood borough. We received a warm welcome everywhere we went and being the Mayor of Charnwood is a chance to discover how much great work goes in within our local communities.” Pauline battled on despite falling and breaking her shoulder at an early engagement. The Deputy Mayor of Charnwood for 2017/18 is Councillor Brenda Seaton who was also appointed at the annual council meeting. Cllr Seaton will be supported during her year of office by Deputy Mayoress Helen Johnson. Sadly I have to report the passing of one of Charnwood borough councils leading councillors and county councillor for Syston Ridgeway, Cllr. David Slater. Borough councillor for Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle. He sadly passed away recently, having been a borough councillor since 2001 and until last year he was for 7 years leader of the council, the longest serving leader of Charnwood Borough Council. A kind and courteous man, he will be sadly missed by all at the county and borough council. Condolences to his family.
A service to celebrate the life of the former Charnwood Borough Council leader will be held on Monday, June 4 at 1pm. The service will be held at St Bartholomew’s Church in Quorn and is open to anyone who knew David. • So Near for Nomads? Local football team Anstey Nomads of the East Midlands Counties Premier league, went into their last game of their 70th. year needing to beat Derby based Borrowash Victoria and hope that leaders Dunkirk FC lost to Seaton. Well the Nomads did their bit by thrashing Borrowash 7-1 at the Cropston Road ground in front of nearly 200 spectators, some from as far away as Wigan and Essex! However it came through that Dunkirk had made a draw with Seaton, which left the “Noisy Nomads” needing to score 23 goals in the last 10 minutes to overhaul Dunkirk, an impossible task, so Nottingham based Dunkirk became champions on goal difference. All is not lost yet however as the club has reached the ¼ finals of the league cup where they face a home game v Ashby Ivanhoe. What a great season really, if only they hadn’t lost against local rivals Birstall in that infamous night match down Meadow Lane, Birstall. • Braggy Park. Grrr. It seems that some dog owners are still not keeping their dogs on a lead whilst walking them through Bradgate Park or Swithland Woods, although I am not sure what harm doing so at Swithland would do. However the Bradgate Park trust is thinking of bringing in an all year round order to keep dogs on a lead, because of fears to deer etc in the park being attacked. Please be aware that wardens and authorised officers can currently issue on-the-spot £100 fines to people in charge of dogs who are breaching the agreed prohibitions. Which currently run from Good Friday or 1st. April to 31st. October. • What a Birthday?. Tuesday May 8th, was my 69th Birthday! So what you might say? Me to, until about 2.30pm when my eldest Son, Sergeant Major Mark Sutherington rang me from Colchester Hospital to inform me that at 2.17pm that day, his wife Shirona had given birth to Alfred (Alfie) John Sutherington. Three weeks early weighing 5lb 6ozs. And just 15 inches (38cm)

long. He just fits into my 2 hands! For the rest of the day I was like a dog with 2 tails! Still am really. They have all been up to visit and he is lovely (Honest) He is a little brother for 3 year old Daniel who says “He is Ok but a bit annoying!â€? Happy Days. â˜şâ˜şâ˜ş • Congratulations Deb. My fellow Charnwood Borough Councillor for Anstey and your County Councillor, Cllr. Deborah Taylor has become the newest member to the Borough Council Cabinet. She has become the Lead Member for Communities, Safety and Wellbeing with responsibility for Community Safety and Neighbourhood Management, Community Grants, Sports and Recreation, Children and Young People, Safeguarding, CCTV, non-Landlord Services ASB and Community Safety Partnership Chair. Deb was first elected to the Borough council in 2015. She replaces Cllr. Brian Page who has become chairman of the Plans committee. Councillor Jonathan Morgan remains the council leader. Well done kiddo. And finally‌ • BUGGLES at Hugglescote WMC. BIG night out on June 9th 2018 at Hugglescote WMC, near Coalville, when Medusa a popular band in Leicestershire and Cornwall during the 1970’s will be coming together again after 35 years and making their last ever appearance

Co-writer of the first ever record played on MTV “Video killed the Radio Stars and old band member (like we ALL are these days.) Why not come along? Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club 101 of my Favourite Plants
As well as being entertaining, this talk was full of useful information and ideas for Club members to use in their own gardens.
You might think that talking about 101 Favourite Plants could be long winded, but no. Janette Merilion had the pace and interest to keep members and visitors to the May meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club totally absorbed, interested and entertained throughout the evening. Janette had a carefully constructed selection of excellent photos, and a wealth of knowledge, interesting stories, and advice on all of her 101 favourites.
Janette also bought plants to sell and a list of all the plants she mentioned.
Janette talked about using plants that ‘earn their keep’ such as having interest through different seasons; long flowering period; or interest at a time when there is little else showing in the garden. Janette also talked about her work as a garden designer and Time’ theandquirky of It also has ‘Gardens through the Queennature Mother’s Lake. asome of her customers. For example, a 70 year old requested quick growing plants ‘so I will have time to enjoy them before I’m too old’.

Himalayan Birch – a small tree to grow for its ‘architectural’ qualities
Different features of plants were identified, as key, such as the bark of the Himalayan Birch with its ghostly white bark, and the deep red glow of the Prunus Serrula. Bulbs through the seasons can also make a powerful addition to a garden. Tulipa ‘Queen of Night’ and Tulipa ‘China Pink’ make a powerful display. Also within Janette’s 101 favourites were choice shrubs, perennials, and grasses.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. Protect the contents of your van. This month we are giving advice on protecting your van and their contents, don’t give thieves an easy ride. Van owners are being urged to follow these simple steps to prevent them from becoming a victim: • If you are staying in a hotel, where possible remove your tools from your van and keep them in your room overnight • Don't assume your vehicle has locked properly using a key fob lock. Criminals can use devices which block the signal. Al ways check your doors are locked before leaving your vehicle unattended • If you have a garage, use it. If your van is parked on a driveway, consider installing security lighting. If neither of these apply, try to park in well-lit areas • Consider alarming the vehicle or fitting an
internal security cage when tools and equipment are not being used, ensure they are kept securely in a lockable store rather than in your vehicle • Consider whether the storage area can be alarmed. If the equipment is portable, take it with you • Don’t leave tools in vehicles unattended or overnight, and place a sign in the window stating they have been removed • Lock/immobilise vehicles and equipment when not in use • Visibly mark your machinery and tools using an engraving or chemical etching kit or use a forensic marking kit. Place a sticker in your window to say you have done so - the signage alone, can be a very effective deterrent • Keep a list of tools, together with serial numbers and any identifying marks. You can do this at www.immobilise.com. This will help to trace them back to you if they are recovered • Consider the use of security patrols around building sites
• Keep the access to building sites secure – fences and gates help prevent unauthorised entry • If you have any suspicious visitors on your site please call the Police non-emergency number 101. Tools are extremely valuable possessions and when stolen, can impact hugely on small businesses. Leicestershire Police would like to remind all van owners to remove their tools from the vehicle when it is left unattended for long periods of time and overnight. Anyone with information about vehicle crime in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland is urged to call Leicestershire Police. We rely on information from members of the public in order to crack down effectively on this type of crime. If anyone is offered tools for sale in suspicious circumstances they should contact us on 101. Alternatively, they can call independent charity CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111. Crime figures can be found online at https://www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL58/

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
Planning Update In last month’s edition I stated I would keep you informed about the planning application for the erection of 50 dwellings and associated works on a site adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. I am sorry I was unable to attend the Public Meeting about this development on the 21st May, because it was the Annual Meeting of the Charnwood Borough Council, where we elect the new Mayor for the year. I thought it would be appropriate for me to let you know, I have requested this application is determined by a Planning Committee, giving the following reasons: Public interest following a pre-application meeting with residents: Outside the limits to development, building in the open countryside: Woodhouse Eaves is designated in the Charnwood Plan Core Strategy as ‘other settlements’ These villages may be suitable for some small scale infill developments to meet local needs. To be considered small scale a development should be appropriate in size for the village they are in and the character of the site’s location and surroundings. This could include single or small groups of homes or businesses that are developed through conversion of existing buildings or on infill plots. This proposal is in conflict with CS1 of the Core Strategy, this is not small scale development. There are recognised traffic issues along Maplewell Road, this is a busy road with parked cars and there are no dedicated cycle routes close to the site: This is not a sustainable location. In my view, this will increase the need to travel by car, services are near and over the guidelines for sustainable development, derived from national guidance. There is no specific local social or economic need for this size of development in Woodhouse Eaves. I am pleased to see residents have responded to Charnwood Borough Council about this application, even at this late stage it is not too

late to have your say by sending your views to Development Control at Charnwood Borough Council, the planning application number is P/18/0715/2.
Member Grant Scheme Charnwood Borough Council have approved a Member Grant Scheme for 2018/19. Each individual Councillor has been allocated £1000 to award to community projects in their Ward. For my Ward of Forest Bradgate which includes the villages of Newtown Linford, Ulverscroft, Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves, I will be looking for community projects which would benefit from this new award scheme. As Councillors we can give the grant to one or several projects, the minimum being £250 and the maximum the full £1000. In the first instance you need to contact me and tell me about your project, if this has potential, then simply fill in an application form on the Charnwood Borough Council website and we will take it from there. There is a criteria which will be checked by officers at the Council, these include: having a constitution/set of rules: have a group bank account with more than signatory and be ‘not for profit’. An organisation or group can submit more than one application in a financial year, but the application must not relate to the same project/scheme. Please note, all applications must be received by the grants team at the Council by the 31st December 2018. There is more information about the grant scheme on the Charnwood Borough Council’s website, just visit www.charnwood. gov.uk/pages/members_grants. The Council also has a number of other grants which support the community for more information visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodgrants
Parking Issues and Planning, Newtown Linford. I have asked that a planning application by the Bradgate Park Trust for a proposed hot food and drinks kiosk at Hunts Hill entrance (Old John) to Bradgate Park be determined by a Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. I have some concerns with serving hot food at this sensitive location. When permission was granted for the Deer Barn café I understand there was no intention to provide cooking facilities and only light pre-packed refreshments etc. would be available. I understand the reasons given for having extra facilities at other locations within the Bradgate Park area to ease pressure on the main car park at Newtown Linford. In my view, providing a kiosk at this location will not solve the current intolerable situation we find on the village streets. I believe a more radical approach is needed, possibly having a reduced parking tariff at Hunts Hill car park, reflecting the time of stay. I notice that visitors already park on the road outside the Hunts Hill car park, suggesting this would increase if more facilities were introduced and if no adjustments were made to the charging tariff. In my view, the introduction of a kiosk would not overcome the root causes that I have outlined before, namely the insufficient capacity of the car park at Newtown Linford and the all-day parking tariff.
Charnwood Tourism Guide I referred to the Tourism Guide making reference to Bradgate Park in the last edition. I stated I was going to ask a question to the Lead Member for Tourism at the Charnwood Borough Council meeting. After receiving a response I replied, stating: ‘I understand the importance to promote tourism in the Borough but not at a visitor attraction that does not have the capacity to cope with the current visitor numbers. The Lead Member has agreed to meet with the Bradgate Park Trust and the County Council to seek solutions to the current situation of visitors to Bradgate Park parking their vehicles on village streets in many cases

The Lead Member stating: I fully appreciate that a resolution is required and it is important that everyone involved in the meeting comes prepared to accept their roles and responsibilities. This is clearly a complex issue and it requires all of the key stakeholders to take ownership of the problem if a solution is to be found.

Monday 14th May was the date for our annual Club outing, with this year’s destination being the historic Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire.
I will continue to press for a satisfactory conclusion to this ever increasing problem, especially, in my opinion, with the promotion of the venue, special events and social media activity by the Bradgate Park Trust. I am grateful to the residents who continue to send me their thoughts and concerns about how this issue is affecting their lives.

The first confirmed evidence of Trentham Hall is shown in surviving plans from 1599. Over the centuries, there were many changes and remodelling to the Hall, as well as to the gardens and whole estate, including landscaping work carried out by Capability Brown to create the lake in the mid 1700’s. The River Trent was the main water supply for the Hall, gardens, lake and estate.
However, by the start of the 20thC, urban and factors driven by the development industrial revolution sealed the fate of the estate. The River Trent became grossly polluted with industrial waste and sewage which affected the whole of the estate’s and environment water supply. The owners, the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, had no option but to abandon the Hall which they offered for sale to the County Council, who buy. Ultimately, in 1911, declined to the Hall was purchased by a local builder, who, in 1912, proceeded to demolish a large part of the Hall. Today, all that remains of the Hall can be viewed, adjacent to Trentham Parish Church, and overlooking the restored Italian Gardens.
The earliest record of Trentham dates to 1086 in the Domesday Book, when it was described as a royal manor. Trentham has a long and colourful history, under various owners. Between 1150 and 1152, the then owner, the Earl of Chester, established a priory of Augustinian canons, but when the Earl died shortly afterwards, Trentham was reclaimed for the Crown by Henry II. At the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII, Trentham’s priory, buildings and rectory were leased in 1536 to Richard Trentham. In succeeding years, Trentham changed hands again, eventually passing in 1541 to ownership by the Leveson family and their successors, which continued through the generations. owners These grew rich and prospered endeavours and prestigious through their own marriages, rising through the ranks to the Peerage.
After various ownership and further mixed fortunes during the majority of the 20thC, in 1996 the Trentham Estate was purchased by St. Modwen Properties P.L.C. and a

German investor, Willi Reitz. Following much negotiation, in 2003 permission was granted for the business operating as Trentham Leisure Ltd to revive and restore the Gardens. This remains an ongoing project with further plans for the future. The Trentham Estate and Gardens have been redeveloped into a very attractive place to visit, with numerous things to see and do. Situated at the north entrance are the car and coach parking areas and the Trentham Shopping Village, with numerous retail outlets, cafes, restaurants, toilet facilities and a large Garden Centre. There is even a hotel on the site for anyone wishing to extend their stay and have more time to explore the Gardens. On entering the Gardens themselves, they are family, dog and largely disability friendly, with of picnic areas, as well as more cafes plenty and toilet facilities throughout the Gardens. There are beautiful lakeside and woodland walks to take, with opportunities to stop and see the wildlife, or just pause to rest awhile on one of the many strategically placed seats and admire the delightful views. Plus there are the Italian Gardens, the Monkey Forest and well as many other the maze to explore, as features to see like the variety of sculptures. Also, visitors can enjoy a boat trip on the lake or a ride on the miniature railway (not during winter months).
For our Club’s visit, we were blessed with warm spring sunshine and a cloudless blue sky which greatly enhanced the day and thanks are due to our coach driver, Mark, from Woods Coaches who drove us to and from our venue in a timely manner.

Latest News Fr Frrom... om... Be Littter ter Free F And Live A More Animal Friendly Lifestyle There has been a lot in the media in recent months regarding litter and, more particularly, the large quantities of plastics in our seas. Litttter of any sort is unsightly but it has now been acknowledged that it is dangerous, not only to us humans but to the wildlife and animals who share our world. Although this is an issue that should be solved with world governments working together, locally individuals can bring about greater and more immediate changes to their environment. If we all refrained from discarding unwanted items wherever we happen to be, then there would be a marked difffer ference in our local environment. Now I’m not for one minute saying that anyone reading this artticle is a litterer - but this litter comes from somewhere. I have never really wanted to get into the mind of people who treat our world with such indifffer ference – that’s a dangerous place to go – but how can people simply thrown their litter where they are instead of taking it home to discard properly? This unsightly mess lefftt in our beauty be spots is a potential hazard for wildlife. I was speaking to someone the other day who told me about a sparrow pulling at a piece of plastic, as it gathered nesting materials. Watching BBC Blue Planet 2 series
we can see this on the clifffsides fsides where young seabirds in their nests are surrounded by our waste materials, some clearly entangled. If we all took a greater pride in our environment, animals wouldn’t sufffer: fer: The shy, unassuming hedgehogs that become entangled in the plastic can holders offten ten aren’t ar found early so have sufffer fered before they can be helped. The ducks and swans along
line and hooks embedded in wounds, struggling to survive, are equally hard to catch in time. The broken glass lefftt indiscriminately indiscrimina causes untold damage to paws and, when harm and kill greater numbers of wildlife. All of this is avoidable if we all disposed of our waste with more care. The propensity to litter takes on an altogether more concerning to dump their accumulated rubbish indiscriminately in beauty spots, grass verges and in farm gateways. Is it laziness? If not, what is it? Recycle whatever you can. Many years ago, spurred on by a fabulous article in Gardeners’ World magazine, I built 4 “Buggingham Palaces with various groups of youn youngsters gsters using materials we gath hered from family and friends. Thesse items included odd bricks (whole or otherwise), tiles, stoness and br broken terracotta pots, 3 palletts and then twigs and branches afte er a bout of pruning. These “Palaces have
become much visiited and used environments for fr frogs, toads, newts and all manner ner of minibeasts to shelter and nestt in. It is not just a means of tidying g and recycling but a way of ensuring ring ther there are habitats for a myriiad of animals and creatures to thrive hrive in. Visitors to our garden are amazed at the way we have made e this fe feature and the signs of life fe in evidence around it. There arre 2 opportunities for members of the public to visit garden twice each h year in aid of the Woodside. The e bird bir box in our garden with a camer camera in it, is currently the focuss of frenetic nest building with the b blue tit parents gathering the cat fur f that we have placed into old birrd feeders for the birds to use. Have you put your cat fur collection out yet to help the birds?
• Unwanted giffts ts ar are always appreciated by us at Woodside as prizes for the tombolas we hold to raise funds. • Any coins, even foreign money, can be cashed in by Woodside adding extra funds to help the animals. • Make sure that no one in your family ever drops litter. Help us to spread the word. • Talk Talk to your family about recycling. r Can your family recycle more of your rubbish/unwanted items? Can you start a compost bin for your vegetable waste?
• Recycle your old towels and blankets - bring them to Woodside so that we can use it as bedding for the animals in our care.
• Check that your cosmetics, shower and bath care items and household cleaning items are animal friendly – and that the bottles are recyclable!
On another recycliing note, with spring, comes spring ng cleaning cle and what better way than han to have a tidy at home and then tak take any items to a charity shop to o sell to rraise much-needed funds? ds? R Recycling on another level! We W have RSPCA Charity shops in Coalville, Wigston, Birstall and Melton n and we ar are always looking outt for quality castofffs. All the money y rraised through the charity shops, iincluding the Gifftaid kindly signed ed up for by our supportters, comess to Woodside to help us to provide for the needs of the animals in our car care. Below, I’ve listed a few other ways tha that you can help the environment and animals.
• Visit one of our charity shops to increase our sales, and ultimately our funds. • Look after the wildlife in your garden – make sure that your garden is litter-free and as animal friendly as possible. Deborah Taylor... Latest News Borough Councillor for Anstey & County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk & Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor ➢ Working Tax Credit The weather has definitely improved and I am hoping that a nice summer will continue after this very warm spring. We did manage to get away for a few days over the early May bank holiday weekend to visit family in Dorset and the weather was very warm in the south of England. I have been dealing with a lot of tricky casework over the past month and this remains my focus in trying to resolve these issues for my residents. It is with great sadness that I have to confirm the death of Charnwood Borough Council’s former Leader Cllr David Slater. Cllr Slater served as the Leader for seven years, stepping down last November. Cllr Slater was also a standing Leicestershire County Councillor following the elections in May 2017. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, who took over the leadership of the council, said: “David was an incredibly decent man who served the Council and the residents of Charnwood with absolute dedication”. David was a true gentleman and was a great support to me when I was first elected in 2015. David’s funeral was a private family affair but a memorial service will be held at 1pm at St Bartholomew’s Church, Quorn on Monday 4th June. I will be attending to pay my respects. Leicestershire County Council welcomed a new Councillor to the Council Chamber this month. Cllr Maggie Wright was elected in the by election held for the Stoney Stanton and Croft Division following the death of the late Ernie White. I have attended a site visit for the relocation of the bus stop on Leicester Road, Anstey. This visit included representatives from First and Centrebus, Leicestershire County Council and Anstey Parish Council. It was a useful meeting and I am now waiting for some plans to be produced before we proceed to the next step.
Universal Credit I recently attended a training session at Charnwood Borough Council regarding the implementation of Universal Credit for new claimants from 11th July 2018 in Charnwood. Universal Credit is a new benefit for working age people who are on a low income or out of work. It replaces a number of existing benefits and tax credits: ➢ Housing Benefit ➢ Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance ➢ Income-based Employment and Support Allowance ➢ Income Support
16
➢ Child Tax Credit A small number of people in Charnwood already receive Universal Credit. From 11th July, anyone of working age who applies for any of the above benefits will automatically be asked to apply for Universal Credit. People who already receive one or more of the above benefits could be moved over to Universal Credit by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) from that date. At first, the switch is likely to be made when people report a change to their personal circumstances but at some point in the next two or three years, the DWP will move everyone of working age who receives any of the above benefits across to Universal Credit. Universal Credit is for people of a working age, not people over pension credit age. This is a major change to the benefits system and to how benefits are paid. If this change is likely to affect you or your family, please make sure you are aware of the changes. There is information available on Charnwood Borough Council’s website: https://www.charnwood. gov.uk/pages/universal_credit_advice, Citizens Advice website also has some information and the Charnwood branch is located in Woodgate Chambers, 70 Woodgate, Loughborough, LE11 2TZ. Clockwise Credit Union holds a weekly dropin session at the Southfield Road offices in Loughborough every Monday between 10am and 1pm. Alternatively you call the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 0800 328 9344, lines are open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.
Woodhouse Eaves I have now submitted my comments on the planning application for up to 50 houses on Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. In my view, this housing application is unsustainable due to the walking distance to many of the essential services in Woodhouse Eaves and the limited bus service for this area. Any residents from this proposed development will be fully reliant on their cars and this is against Charnwood Borough Council’s Core Strategy for approving planning applications. I will therefore continue to support Woodhouse Eaves Parish Council and all the residents that have been in contact with me.
Member Grants Scheme I mentioned the Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) Member Grant Scheme in last month’s report. I now have further details and the information needed to apply.
Applicants are asked to approach their local Councillor(s) if they wish to apply before filling in the Application Form. In my Division that will be Cllr Sutherington and myself for Anstey, Cllr Snartt for Forest Bradgate and Cllr Page and Cllr Hadji-Nikolaou for Thurcaston and Cropston. Applicants are also advised to check the Charnwood Borough Council web site before making any application to make sure that the Councillor’s grant pot has not already been committed to other projects. The budget allocation per Councillor is £1,000 for 2018/19. Applications need to be submitted before 31st December 2018. The minimum grant award per Councillor has been set at £250 and the maximum is £1,000. Applications can be made to more than one Councillor. Completed application forms will then be sent to the Grants Team at CBC, who will check that they meet the scheme’s criteria before forwarding the relevant documents to the Councillor being applied to, together with any comments and a decision form. The Councillor will then review the application and record their recommendations on the decision form. The Grants Team will let the applicant know the outcome, giving their decision and reasons. Therefore…I am on the lookout for community projects in my ward of Anstey, which could benefit from the new grant scheme launched. All you need to do is contact me and tell me about your project. Promotion I was delighted to receive two promotions in the May reshuffles at both Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) and Leicestershire County Council (LCC). I have been made Cabinet Lead Member for Communities, Safety and Wellbeing at CBC which is a large portfolio covering many different areas of the Council. I have also been made Cabinet Support Member for Children and Family Services, supporting Cllr Ivan Ould, at LCC. Both these roles come with a lot of responsibility and I will be spending the summer getting up to speed on both these new roles. I have also come off all the

committees that I was sitting on at both CBC and LCC and I will be devoting all my time to both of these roles.
Fly Tipping A new campaign to stop people illegally dumping their rubbish in Leicestershire has been launched. The #IfOnly campaign has seen councils across the city and county join forces to warn people that they will face tough action if they are caught fly tipping. The consequences for their actions can range from a £400 fixed penalty notice to an unlimited fine, a criminal record or time spent in prison. Fly tipping is a huge problem in Leicester and across each district in the county, with councils dealing with 12,000 incidents per year. The new campaign focuses on the stories of four characters that are based on real people who have been caught fly tipping in the past. The examples show that people can be caught for all sorts of reasons, from putting a fridge on the pavement to dumping bags by a local recycling bank. Residents can also be fined and prosecuted for using a dodgy trader who does not have a waste licence and operates door-to-door. There were 612 fly-tipping incidents in Charnwood in 2017 and 581 the year before. In 2010, there were 558 incidents. In 2017, Charnwood Borough Council issued 17 fixed penalty notices for fly tipping. Residents can visit the campaign website at www.lesswaste.org.uk/flytipping and follow the campaign on social media #IfOnly
Charnwood Mayor A new Mayor of Charnwood has taken over the chains of office for 2018/19. Councillor Christine Harris was appointed as the Borough’s first citizen on Monday 21st May at the Council’s annual meeting at Loughborough Town Hall. Cllr Harris, the former Deputy Mayor, will attend around 500 events over the coming 12 months. The Mayor, who has been a Borough Councillor for 23 years, has chosen two causes to support during her year of office. They are Sense, a national disability charity that began
by supporting those who are deafblind, and the Woodland Trust, which protects and campaigns on behalf of this country’s woods, plants trees and restores ancient woodlands. Outgoing Mayor, Cllr Pauline Ranson supported two causes during her year of office, Myaware and Loughborough Wellbeing Café. A total of £12,621 was raised for these worthy causes. The Deputy Mayor of Charnwood for 2017/18 is Councillor Brenda Seaton who was also appointed at the annual council meeting.
Newtown Linford New double yellow lines have been put into place on Bradgate Road, Newtown Linford. There are also new restrictions of ‘no loading’ on Main Street. The consultation on the proposed restrictions on Grey Crescent goes back out for consultation on 25th May until 15th June 2018. Comments should be emailed to jane.x.moore@leics.gov.uk. Both of these schemes have been paid for by the Bradgate Park Trust to try and alleviate some of the traffic and parking issues residents are experiencing in the village. There is still a lot of work to do and I continue to work with the Cllr. Snartt, Parish Council, Bradgate Park Trust and the residents group to provide a positive outcome.

Tip of the Month Did you know…
…..Leicestershire County Council runs Fostering events? If you have ever thought about fostering, please think about attending one of the event evenings. Leicestershire County Council (LCC) believes that many people who live in Leicestershire have the skills, knowledge and experience to become great foster carers and they would love to talk to you. If you have ever thought about fostering, whether you are thinking about it now or in the future, then get in touch. They will be able to help you to decide if fostering could fit into your life and provide lots of information too, at your pace. They consider each person’s interest on an individual basis, so please do not rule yourself out…count yourself in. Their ‘find out about fostering’ events will tell you everything you need to know about becoming a foster carer with Leicestershire County Council and let you know the differences between fostering with a local authority and an independent fostering agency. Events are held at County Hall in Glenfield (LE3 8SA) starting at 6.30pm until around 8pm. The evenings are informal and relaxed – with plenty of tea and biscuits and a chance to hear from some existing foster carers and the team. Afterwards, you can decide to speak to one of the team in more detail or just take some information and get back in touch if you need any more details. When you arrive at County Hall, please park in the visitors' car park and go to the main reception for 6.15pm. The dates of the next evenings are: ➢ Thursday 14th June ➢ Wednesday 4th July ➢ Tuesday 24th July ➢ Wednesday 15th August If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

President’s Day a Great Sucess Sunday 6th May was Anstey RFC's President's Day held at our ground near the Martin School and later on at our clubhouse in the Coach and Horses. Letchworth RFC sent a touring side to our village for the day on Sunday having spent the previous night out on the town in Leicester hosted by our very own Doug Galbraith. Kick off was at 2pm and the sun was shining on both the players and the substantial crowd of supporters. Both teams had a full squad of players, so rolling substitutions was the order of the day, very much a traditional President’s Day. Our side was bolstered by some friends from other clubs around the county, so a big thank you to them. A full on game with plenty of tries from both sides - and some conversions, but in the end it was a good Anstey win. Late afternoon and it was family time down at the Coach with a great selection of food cooked and supplied by the Anstey players filling up all the tables in the upstairs club room ensuring enough to eat for all our guests, our players and their families. Given the fantastic weather, festivities continued outside for many hours including a series of boat races, not only the traditional down in one pints, but also a twist with bottles
of red wine. Anstey held there own well against an enthusiastic challenge from Letchworth. Later on it was karaoke time inside which even included a few people who could nearly sing. Thanks to our host Caroline Holt for making all this possible. Next event is the annual Club Dinner and Presentation night on Saturday 2nd June being held again this year at the Altro Mondo restaurant on Humberstone Road in Leicester. There are still a few tickets available at £20 per person for a four cource meal and more entertainment to follow. Contact any committee member for details and to book your ticket. The club AGM is on Sunday 1st July at 11am in our upstairs clubroom. All club members, Life ones as well, are welcome to attend. Regular training will start in July at Link Road and new players of all abilities are always welcome. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside The Coach and Horses (at the car park end). ANSTEY CHESS CLUB Anstey Chess Club meet on Thursday evenings at the Stadon Sports and Social Club in Anstey from 7:30pm. We also have training sessions for beginners/improving players on Saturday mornings at Anstey Community Library from 10am-1pm. New members more than welcome - Grandmasters or just learning. On Thursday 10th May, the Anstey Chess Club played our very first competitive match. The club has derived from the attendees to the Saturday morning sessions and some members felt that they'd like to give competitive chess a go to help them improve. Our team was Mick Sandham, myself, Mick Squire and John Whitmore. We made our way to Ashby De La Zouch - thanks to the 'luck of the draw' - to play the match. I thought I was owed a favour knowing the draw master but this is clearly not the case! The format of Summer's 'Harrod Cup' is a 'rapidplay' tournament where one plays the same opponent with both colours, white and black with a specific time limit for each game. It usually makes for exciting chess matches and this match was to prove no exception. I, as the match captain for Anstey, tossed a coin for colours and we played with black pieces first game. John Whitmore lost his game first on bottom board against an opponent stronger than him on paper. Next was a loss for Mick Squire on 3rd board after I'd heard Mick ask his opponent what he'd like when Queening a pawn. By far the most interesting board was Mick Sandham on board 1. After 20 or so years out of the game, Mick was facing a young lad with huge potential and just after I had check-mated my opponent with very little time on my clock, I had a look at Mick's game, just as he checkmated his opponent. After the first round of games, we were level pegging at 2-2. We swapped the colours and this time we had the white pieces. The first match to finish was John again and unfortunately, he came second out of two in his game. Mick Sandham and myself finished at roughly the same time again. I had forced a resignation from my opponent during the middlegame and Mick had lost to his young opponent which meant we were 4-3 down with just Mick Squire to finish playing. Mick's opponent had a perpetual check on offer and once he was (illegally) made aware of the match situation, he repeated the moves to force a draw. We lost the game 4.5-3.5 and personally, I was extremely pleased with the team's performance. Mick Squire earned a draw in his first ever competitive game and we proved that we are not there to make up the numbers. We will now have to wait to find out our opponents in the next round. June Club Nights - At time of going to print, we intend to be at the Stadon Sports and Social Club on Thursdays 7th, 14th and 21st June from 7:30pm. If you want to come along and meet us and play some friendly games of chess, feel free to pop along.

FILM PRESENTATIONS
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council May's British comedy, "Whisky Galore", was a pleasure to watch, with its humour and colourful characters. It told the story of a community victory over adversity during WW11 on a South Hebrides Island. It definitely deserved to win a prestigious award at the Edinburgh Film Festival. "Darkest Hour" will be shown on June 8th and lasts 125 minutes. Starring Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas, June’s biographical drama is set during the early part of World War 11. Winston Churchill must decide whether to negotiate peace with Hitler or fight against him. He displays an extravagant sense of humour but how much is his wife responsible for whom he became? This film has won Golden Globes, six Academy Award nominations, Oscar nominations and actually won the Bafta Award for Leading Actor. "Finding your Feet" will be shown on September 14th. This warm comedy, starring Imelda Staunton, will be an ideal film in Thurcaston, after the summer break. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost £5 which will include refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society At the May meeting of Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society we heard from Douglas Clinton about St Wistan, his death and afterlife. He described the story of the murder, sanctification and cult of the 9th century Mercian prince Wistan (aka Wystan or Wigstan) It is thought Wistan died at Wistow Leicestershire in 849 AD. At that time it would have been the Bishop who awarded sainthoods not the Pope, so in Wistan’s case it would have been the Bishop of Leicester who gave his approval. Wistan came from a line of Mercian kings descended from Offa. He was the son of Wigmund and Aelfflaed (both offspring of Mercian kings). Beorhtfrith was Wistan’s godfather, he wanted to marry Wistan’s widowed mother Aelfflaed, but Wistan refused, saying they were too closely related
and it was against Church law. Beorhtfrith went to visit him, suuposedly in peace, but when they greeted each other he struck Wistan on his head with his dagger and his servant stabbed him with a sword, killing him and his companions. Wistan’s death was prior to the Viking invasions. The Vikings destroyed many documents so there is little written evidence of the time. John of Worcester’s account, written two centuries later states “on 1st June on the eve of Whitsun Beorhtfrith son of Beorhtwulf King of the Mercians unjustly slew his kinsman St Wistan. This man was the grandson of two Kings of Mercia”… when he died ”a column of light stretched up to heaven and remained visible for 30 days”. Wistan’s body was taken to Repton and buried in the tomb of his grandfather King Wiglaf.
Wistan’s relics were moved to Evesham Abbey. After the Norman Conquest, abbots questioned how saintly these local saints really were. The Abbott of Evesham had Wistan’s severed head subjected to an ‘ordeal by fire’ which it survived unscathed! In 1207 disaster struck Repton when the central tower of the church collapsed and broke the skull of St Wistan. What ultimately became of his remains is unknown… During June, July and August there will be outdoor visits. The next indoor meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston, on Tuesday 18th September at 7.30pm, and will be about Cropstone House Farm. Please visit the website for more details. http://www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

On Wednesday 25th April, Polly Ho-Yen visited the school and talked to all year 7, 8, and 9. She talked about her life as an author and what inspired her to write. Ebony Harrison (8T) said of her visit that “it was really good to listen to Pollyâ€? and that it had given her a boost to write a book herself. In the afternoon Polly did a writing workshop with a year 8 group illustrating how doodling can help inspire you to write a story. Polly said of her visit “I was thrilled to spend the day talking writing and reading with students from Years 7-9 at Martin High School. The students were a fantastic, engaged and interested audience and I really enjoyed talking to them about their everyday experiences which feed into their creative outputs as well as gaining some great book recommendations! I was fully absorbed by the different and original ideas for story writing by the students in the writing workshop. At the end of this session one student remarked that they'd had the best idea for a story they'd ever had. It was a pleasure to work with all the students, the Library team and the English department and be part of the inclusive learning environment of Martin High for the day - thank you to everyone for making this visit possibleâ€?. N.B. All the news stories included are just a small snippet of what we do as a school, if you would like to find out more please go to our website‌www.martinhigh.org
What will this mean for MHS? We have already benefitted hugely from collaboration with the Trust, including ‘My Tutor’ support for Year 11, Classics Club in Year 7, Maths Challenge opportunities for Years 711, support with improving our school site and collaboration on teaching and learning across all schools in the Trust. We are very proud of Martin High School and its learners; joining the Trust will allow many benefits but we will not lose our individual school identity. There will be some changes in the way school is governed. Monitoring of our school will become a role for the Board of Trustees, which includes representatives from all the partner schools, together with a range of members with specialist expertise. We will also still have a school governing body. We remain committed to providing the best education for our young people and in joining the Lionheart, we will be able to do that successfully for future years; whilst retaining our unique school ethos.

Fusion Lifestyle Launches Youth England Engagement Outreach Project in World Cup Mountsorrel & Anstey in Charnwood Fixtures On (3rd May), Fusion Lifestyle launched their outreach project in Mountsorrel and Anstey.
Fusion will be delivering outreach sessions to engage with the young community to offer multi-sports youth engagement activities. This will give young local residents the choice of even more fun fitness options. The project has been developed with Active Charnwood, the borough council team which runs a host of sports activities and programmes in the area. Nick Evatt, Sports and Community Development Manager at Fusion Lifestyle, commented: ‘We’re really excited to be moving out into the community and engaging with customers who aren’t already using the leisure facilities. Through this fantastic partnership approach we believe we will be able to offer the young people in Anstey and Mountsorrel something different and this is a great addition to our offer.’ Cllr Brian Page, lead member for communities and wellbeing at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “I am pleased to see Fusion taking their services out into the community and engaging with young people and increasing opportunities for 14 to 25-year-olds to get active.” Jit Singh, Project Manager at Go Getta CIC added: ‘Having worked directly with the children and young people of Anstey at our Anstey Youth Cafe for over six years, we're thrilled to be part of this project and know that the young people will be keen to get involved.’
England open their campaign against Tunisia on the 18th of June. Panama follow six days later, and then the potentially massive clash against Belgium is on the 28th. Monday 18th June – Tunisia - 7pm K/O Sunday 24th June – Panama - 1pm K/O Thursday 28th June – Belgium - 7pm K/O
Graham Lloyd, Youth Officer at the Sorrel Youth Cafe added: ‘We are really pleased to be part of this new outreach initiative. The Café has limited resources to engage with young people through sport, so importantly this project will help us gain their views and to develop our plans for the future.’ Facilities available at Charnwood include pools, gyms, fitness studios, a dedicated indoor cycle studio, sports hall and an indoor soft play. Loughborough is also home to a Bickels Yard café. Fusion Lifestyle, a leading registered charity which provides quality sport, leisure and fitness activities to local communities, runs three leisure centres in Charnwood on behalf of the borough council.

The other contests were judged by voting. Sheila Timms won the craft cup, for her decorated spectacle case (the alternative was a pencil case.) Winner of the flower cup was Beryl Boyes. The cookery cup was presented by Wendy and Marian, the judges, and the others by president Sheila Price. We then enjoyed an extended social time; the chance for a good old natter, and to get to know the two visitors.

THE 23rd CHARNWOOD MARATHON 2018 Hundreds of walkers and runners from Leicestershire and further afield took part in a dull Saturday morning from Quorn and although the weather was not perfect everyone agreed that it was a `most refreshing` and pleasant day out. The event was hosted by The Rotary Club of Blaby Meridian who were supporting MIND (mental health charity), CHILDRENS`AIR AMBULANCE and other charities also supported by Rotary. The walkers meandered at their own pace enjoying the beautiful countryside with either friends or family while the runners treated the event more seriously in a competitive manner. The amazing fact was that in the 15 mile route for the runners only 1 minute 17 seconds separated the first 3 runners, it was ALMOST A PHOTO FINISH with Robert Bardsley (2.17.53) closely followed by Nick White of Charnwood AC (2.18.40) and Ian Paramore of Barrow Runners (2.19.10)

The times recorded in the long 27 mile route were equally amazing with Ian Cox finishing 1st (3.52.43) closely followed by Matthew Deniff of Poplar Club (3.58.15) and in 3rd place Edward De Sallis Young (4.00.58) Nevertheless both walkers and runners agreed that it was a great day out despite the weather with certificates and badges given out at the finish with some home made hot soup and various foods etc available to all walkers and runners who were tired and exhausted. A fabulous total of approx £4200 (at time of going to press) was raised for the above mentioned deserving charities.
