ANSTEY WI September has been such a busy month. Anstey WI ran a successful stall at the Local Gala. The theme was childhood stories and therefore, it was decorated as a gingerbread house with gingerbread men in residence alongside the traditional cakes, preserves and craft items. This raised £123.60 on the day despite the miserable wet weather. Many thanks to everyone who helped Sheila Timms to run the stall. The members were delighted that 2 representatives from the Anstey library could attend our meeting to receive a cheque from a fundraising event at a June special garden party. The library is a valuable asset to our community and needs about £20,000 a year to run the basic service. The talk at the meeting was on Medical Detection dogs by Wendy Coley. It was fascinating that these specially trained dogs could help diagnose cancer so quickly and efficiently. These dogs also assist people in managing their medical problems i.e. in diabetes. Wendy spoke how this charity has evolved over recent years and is now accepted by the medical profession as a resource to aid diagnosis. No wonder dogs are man’s best friend. There was a competition for the best doggy ornament and this was won by Gill Jones. 2nd place was Maja Tompkins, 3rd place was Sheila Price and 4th place was Wendy Layton. The next WI meeting is on Wednesday 11th October 2017 at 7.30pm at The Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey. The speaker is Carolyn Boulter on Making Patchwork Christmas Trees. There is a Competition: The best Patchwork Christmas Tree This is an open meeting and visitors are warmly welcome. The fee is £3.50 and includes refreshments.

Local Guide does the Double Local Girl Guide Maisie Perkins, who attends 1st Anstey Guides, has been selected to represent Anstey and the surrounding area by attending an International Scouting and Guiding event in Ireland next summer. She needs to fundraise to pay for the trip and so has been busy planning events. Her main fundraiser was to cycle twice around Rutland Water – a distance of over 30 miles! On Saturday 16th September, Maisie, and a fellow Guide from Whitwick, set off early in the morning to Rutland. The day was overcast but not too breezy. The start of the challenge was slow as the local ‘Park run’ were also out in force, but Maisie was soon off at a steady pace following the anticlockwise undulating circuit of Rutland Water. A first lap was completed in just over 2 hours followed by a welcome refuelling. The second lap took a similar time and Maisie managed to dodge the showers that fell in the middle of the day! Maisie would like to thank Bosworth Wright, along with her family and friends and other supporters, for sponsoring her on her challenge. If you would like to sponsor Maisie, please contact her on 0116 2358059. If you are interested in going along to Anstey Guides on a Thursday evening (6:30 – 8:30 at the Martin High School) please contact Helen Berry at helenberry21@outlook.com

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club

of 150 colourful, imaginative and, in some cases, quirky entries, giving the judges a particularly difficult job with so many to choose winners from.

Thanks to Cllr Deborah Taylor for finding the time in her busy schedule to come along and present cups and trophies to all of our winners. Thanks to all the exhibitors and visitors and everyone who contributed towards the smooth running of the Show. See you all again next year.

The sun continued to shine throughout the day which helped towards the high visitor numbers in the afternoon, who, after viewing the exhibits had the added attraction of a Tombola table groaning with prizes.

Annual Show

Congratulations to Mr Paul Stubbs, a longtime supporter of the Show. He once again ‘produced the goods’ and deservedly retained the Sedgwick Cup awarded for the highest overall points total.

The Club held its 34th Annual Garden, Craft & Produce Show on Saturday 2nd September 2017 at the Richard Hilll Primary School in Thurcaston. The early morning sunshine brought the exhibitors out in a steady stream and we were pleased to see the usual array of excellent exhibits. When the judging began, the show benches had filled up nicely and it was the superb quality of the displays in the flower and floral art section that led the way, closely followed by the home baking, photographs and arts & crafts.

The Best Exhibit in Show trophy went to Mrs Lesley Day whose flower arrangement entitled ‘Fire & Ice’ received special praise for its excellence. 

This year the Leicester & Leicestershire Horticultural Judges’ Guild celebrate their Diamond Anniversary and to mark the occasion they sponsored a class for ‘1 specimen pot plant, 1 specimen flower and 1 specimen vegetable’. The first prize and E certificate went to Mr Phil Dews.

Club Events – Autumn 2017 The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall. New members and visitors are made most welcome. What’s more, it’s excellent value at only £3.00 per meeting. Wednesday 11th October, 7.45 pm – Woodland Gems – Andrew Ward

On a fine day there

a New to our winners list this year are Jane Westby, for preserves and wine and Robert Gregory for the novice trophy. A special ‘well done’ to them with congratulations going to all our other winners for their sterling efforts.

Some of the outstanding plants for those shady places in every garden. Friday 13th October – Visit to Batsford Arboretum

A superb collection of vegetables

We must give extra special thanks to the children of the Richard Hill School and the Guides and Brownies for their outstanding contributions to the children’s section. Extra tables had to be provided to display in excess

A special mention must also go to Leah Holyoake who did a ‘Mo Farah’ by winning three Gold medals to add to the three she won last year, two from the children’s section and one awarded along with the Junior Trophy (exhibitor under 16 with the most points in the adult classes). Is the triple, triple a possibility?

Some of the many visitors to the Show

Entrance, coach and guided tour - £22 Batsford Arboretum is widely regarded as one of the finest in Britain. A relatively recent addition is the magnificent visitors centre combining information and exhibitions, plant centre, gift and bookshop, café and restaurant. On a fine day there are few better places to enjoy a coffee than on the terrace, which provides views of Batsford’s original walled garden with far-reaching vistas of the Evenlode valley. Wednesday 8th November, 7.45pm – Fruit Growing – Philip Aubury Preparation, planting, pruning, general maintenance and the best cultivars to try. For more information or to book a place on the trip to Batsford, please call Dave Haddon (0116) 235 9758 or Richard Elks (0116) 236 8313

FILM PRESENTATIONS

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council "Light between Oceans" was set around a lighthouse in uninhabited sweeping rocky landscape off the west coast of Australia. The acting was superb, making us really believe in the characters. Our emotions were certainly stirred as we became anxious about the varying relationships with little girl, Lucy Grace. What a satisfying ending there was for our audience. "Sully: Miracle on the Hudson" will be shown on October 13th and lasts 96 minutes. This biographical drama is directed and produced by Clint Eastwood. Starring Tom Hanks as the American pilot, Sullenberger, the film follows the emergency landing on the Hudson River, saving 155 passengers and crewe. The subsequent publicity and investigation accuse Sully of unnecessarily ditching the aircraft. Will he be found guilty of pilot error or did birds cause not one but both engines to fail?

Classic Car Run for Rainbow’s Hospice This was the third year for this run which is becoming ever more popular with classic car owners. Thirty six drivers from all the surrounding counties and Leicestershire came, some travelling considerable distances before tackling the actual run which covered about 79 miles! The ages of the cars ranged from the 1920s to modern day classics. This year the route went from The Gate Hangs Well, Syston along country lanes through the Charnwood Forest eventually arriving in Derbyshire at the Barton Turns Marina for a comfort stop and refreshments for those who fancied a bacon butty or even full English breakfast! Then it was on to Calke Abbey, once again along minor roads some with spectacular views, including Breedon Church and, in one place, a tepee. A special area was set aside for the cars to enable other visitors to enjoy the sight. Sadly, there was no sunshine but, thankfully, there was only a small amount of rain towards the end.

" Lion " will be shown on November 10th and lasts 120 minutes. Starring Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel, as Best Supporting Actor, "Lion" won a BAFTA for Best Adapted Screen Play. Based on a true story about a five year old street-boy, who fell asleep on a train. He ended up on the streets of Kolkata, one thousand miles away, as an adopted Australian. Twenty years later, he amazingly remarks, "My mother saw my face after twenty-five years"! "Their Finest" will be shown on December 8th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost £5 which will include refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

We would like to thank the proprietor of The Gate Hangs Well for allowing us to use his car park and facilities, Howard Midgely for photographing all the cars as they left the car park and of course all the participants who helped us raise a record amount of £765 for the Rainbow’s Hospice.

Terry Farmer and Mick Squire, organisers.

Played Four, Won Four for Anstey RFC’s 2017/18 season Your local rugby club has had one of the best starts to a season for many a year. Our campaign started off on 26th August with a 51-19 Home win when Notts. Moderns came to visit us at Link Road. Aaron Mahoney scoring four of our tries in an all round great performance. Round two on 2nd September was Anstey’s first ever game against Trinity Guild. On a warm late summer’s day the squad travelled to Coventry and despite missing a few key players came back with a 48-14 win even though we were 14-12 behind at half time. Round three and it should have been our first league game of the season against Sileby Town, but they called off due to lack of players. However, fixtures secretary, Ian Pollock managed arrange a replacement home fixture with Vipers 2nds coming to Link Road. Proving tough opposition it looked like we would be giving way to a 10-0 Vipers lead at Half time until our prop, Doug Galbraith crashed over the line under the posts to give Anstey five points, but the conversion for the extra two didn't happen. More luck in the second half with a penalty bouncing in after hitting the goalpost. One more late try and Anstey were 13-10 winners on the day. Round four and our squad were all raring to go for a trip to Southwell who called off with a day to go. Perhaps our winning reputation was something to do with it? Round five and off to Victoria Park for a league game against old foes Aylestone Athletic where a big team performance including a couple of brand new players gave us a 32-19 win. Market Bosworth, Oakham, Burbage Cosby and Long Eaton make up the programme for the next few weeks. Training is every Wednesday from 7pm at Link Road and new players of all abilities are always welcome. All details of for all the club officials are on the club noticeboard inside The Coach and Horses (at the car park end) Or visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey

This is in the very early stages of development and the Parish Council have commissioned a feasibility study to look at this in greater detail. Christmas Decorations 2017 There is always a lot of speculation about the Christmas decorations for the village so it seemed worthwhile letting you know early what to expect. There will be no tree in the centre of the Nook this year. This decision was taken by the Parish Council after last year’s tree was vandalised yet again. There will be two trees in the village lit up with Christmas lights, one in St Mary’s Churchyard and the second at the bottom green on the approach to the village. The shops in the centre of the village will have festoon lighting around them and lamp column decorations to brighten up the dark evenings.

Dates of future Full Council Meetings 10th October, 31st October, 21st November Meetings start at 7.30 at the Jubilee Hall, all members of the public are welcome to these meetings.

Recreational facilities Mitchell’s Field is open!! This long awaiting facility is now open to the public, it is being used by the Anstey Swifts Football Club for junior football. The addition of outdoor gym equipment and a petanque court will finish the facilities. This field is for recreational use, there are notices about dogs on the field, we do not want to encourage the walking of dogs on this field, and ask that people clean up after their animals. Golf and the use of metal detectors is not allowed.

Parish Council would like to thank them for all their hard work. The gala committee would welcome new members http://ansteygala.btck.co.uk

The works to the Nook are a requirement of the planning permission that have been granted for the Bloor and Jelson developments along Cropston Road. The Parish Council have been working to ensure that a green top can be restored to the Nook Roundabout.

Coping with Cancer: Time Out So what is Time Out? - In some respects, Time Out can be whatever you wish it to be - it is a chance to talk to those who understand completely, a place to seek advice and reassurance and to share experiences with others in a really relaxing environment.

LOROS Bridal Event Something old, something new…LOROS is giving brides-tobe the chance to pick up their perfect wedding dress at a bargain price, with hundreds of brand new and pre-loved gowns all priced under £200.

And then there are the therapies. As well as the emotional support given, complementary therapies are offered to relieve stress and discomfort and encourage a feeling of well being. Kirstie, a qualified nurse, advises “we work with a person as a whole, it is a very holistic approach; complementary therapies can simply make you feel better”. Coping with Cancer offers Aromatherapy, Reiki, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Swedish massage. Anyone up for aromatherapy? Delicate aromas drift in the atmosphere and gentle music surrounds. Perhaps a massage would be nice? There are lots of choices. Time Out for Anita - Anita already knew of C-W-C through sharing her aunt’s experiences when she herself succumbed to a seemingly never-ending series misfortunes, some of them life threatening. An exceptionally brave and inspiring lady, Anita risked her own life to save that of her unborn baby but her many troubles were only just beginning to mount up. Fortunately C-W-C was there to help her through. Time Out gave comfort, help and understanding. Anita’s baby daughter is now a teenager and Anita herself became a C-W-C befriender. No-one is better placed to understand and share anxieties of others than she is. Says Anita, “I am a firm believer in the power of positive thought and the strength that can result from simply choosing to be happy. Laughter? That can be the strongest of medicines.” Time Out for Marilyn - Double tragedy struck when terminal cancer struck Marilyn’s daughter and then her husband not long afterwards. Distraught and feeling alone, C-W-C was recommended to her by another cancer care organisation (and also by the NHS). Counselling was offered and Time Out was then suggested. Welcoming and supportive through both illnesses, lasting friendships developed at Time Out. Marilyn still visits Time Out eight years later and appreciates the opportunities to share her experiences with others. For Marilyn, Time Out is a place for comfort and reassurance, a chance to chat and a chance to listen. “Sometimes we simply swap our favourite recipes; there aren’t any rules” she says “I don’t think there’s anywhere else like this” If you would like to visit a Time Out session close to where you live, simply visit our website for the address and details of our timetable. JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART DISEASE IN LEICESTERSHIRE Live in Leicestershire? Have been affected by heart disease? Want to join the fight against heart disease? Not sure how ? Read on to find out more …. Around 107,000 people in Leicestershire are fighting their daily battles with heart and circulatory disease. Heart and circulatory disease kills nearly 2,300 people each year in Leicestershire – nearly a quarter of them before the age of 75. The nation’s heart charity is calling on people across Leicestershire to take heart and join the fight against heart disease by becoming part of their local fundraising group and raising vital funds for heart research. Carrie Seaton, BHF Fundraising Manager for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, said: “Heart disease is heartless. Too many lives are lost each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation. “Our fundraising groups are the face of the BHF in their local communities. From running fundraising events through to supporting schools and local businesses, or organising collections, they are a fantastic way to support our vital work and help people locally. Any time that you can give will be invaluable, because every pound raised will help fund vital research and identify new treatments that could help save lives. BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Through the public’s generosity the BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research by 2020.

We need your help to save the lives of people you love and care about. For more information on getting involved email communityvolunteer@bhf.org.uk or visit www.bhf.org.uk/volunteer

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

Local Policing in Rural Areas Following concerns raised about the levels of policing in my Forest Bradgate Ward, I asked a question at the last main Charnwood Borough Council meeting. After seeing a recent rise in crime incidents reported, I thought you may like to know the main thrust of my question. In my question I stated: I am receiving concerns from residents about the levels of policing in rural areas of my Ward. In recent years Neighbourhood Policing has been the cornerstone of policing in local rural areas. Noting the aims of the Police and Crime Plan 2017-2021, making communities and neighbourhoods safer, I asked the Leader of the Council in his capacity as a member of the Police and Crime Panel, to raise this important issue at the next available meeting by putting forward the following: Is there an acknowledgement that Neighbourhood Policing in rural areas is no longer viable with the current level of resources allocated to these areas? Request an urgent review on how policing in rural areas is carried out to overcome the real concerns of local people including the farming community: Request a review of communication links with the Police, which should include local Neighbourhood Watch Groups. The Leader of the Council agreed to forward my question and would like it submitted to Lord Bach, as Police and Crime Commissioner. I will keep you informed when I receive a response.

Charnwood Borough Councils’ Residents Survey I just wanted to make sure everyone has had the information about the Council’s Your Charnwood Your Say Residents Survey, which encourages residents to have their say on Charnwood Borough Council’s services. This survey not only seeks views on the Council but also life in Charnwood, asking people what their top priorities are.

In my view, this is a great opportunity to let the Council know what are the most important issues they need to tackle, and identify specific areas where services need to improve. May I encourage residents within my Forest Bradgate Ward to take part in this survey, so that services that may be specific to our rural area are recognised when the final results of the survey are known. The survey runs until 27th October 2017 and can be found at www.charnwood.gov.uk/ survey. To ask for a paper copy of the survey, please contact the Council on 01509 634705 or e-mail communications@charnwood.gov .uk. Everyone who completes the survey can enter a free prize draw for a ÂŁ50 shopping voucher and there are five to give away.

Heavy Lorries through Newtown Linford I have received complaints about heavy lorries travelling through Newtown Linford. It seems there were two problem areas: Whilst road works were being completed on the A50 the diversion was through the village. I do not recall this happening before, therefore I contacted the County Council asking that in future they would look at an alternative diversion that could be implemented. The other problem brought to my attention was lorries travelling through the village going to the construction sites in Anstey. I am pleased to receive assurances from officers at Charnwood Borough Council they have investigated this issue and have reminded the developers about the designated routes construction traffic should be taking when delivering to the sites, they have also completed follow up checks to make sure the vehicles are using the correct route. I understand it is sometimes difficult to get information about lorries travelling through villages in my Ward, such as owners names and registration numbers, but if this is possible let me know and I will make the relevant agencies aware of the problem.

Innovation in Charnwood Entrepreneurs and businesses looking to grow in Charnwood are invited to a series of information workshops. Three “Going for Growth workshops have been organised by inCharnwood, an initiative by Charnwood Borough Council and CASE. The workshops are free to attend and will give advice on finance, operations and marketing. They will be run by experienced business owner, tutor and enterprise support practitioner, Ian Wilson. The workshops are part of the Leicester Business Festival 2017. The free workshops will be held at Charnwood Borough Council’s main offices in Southfields Road, Loughborough. The topics and dates are: Marketing Monday 23rd October: Operations Wednesday 1st November: Finance Friday 3rd November. To book a place visit www.leicesterbusinessfestival.com

The Nook Anstey I am grateful to Deborah Taylor for alerting me to the current situation with the works to The Nook, Anstey. Although I am not involved in representing Anstey at the County Council, I do have information and correspondence from when I was involved in the planning process and in my view, commitments made at that time. I was horrified when learning the new roundabout might not be landscaped but covered in tarmac. I spent an enormous amount of time during the planning process making sure this new roundabout was landscaped. This was endorsed by the findings of earlier analysis of Anstey where it was stated among the weaknesses, limited public realm area and limited soft landscaping in the centre of the village. I do hope this issue will be resolved in line with agreements made when planning permission was granted. In my view, The Nook would be

It has been a very busy month; I have attended many village events and had a full timetable of training and committee meetings. On Saturday 2nd September, I held another residents’ surgery with Edward Argar MP. We were busy all morning and would like to thank everyone who came down to speak to us both. After the surgery, we then headed to the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Show to admire all the excellent produce on display. I was honoured to be asked to present the trophies to the winners and would like to say well done to all who entered. Onto the third event of the day and we headed over to the Woodhouse Eaves Craft Show to again admire all the excellent produce and crafts on display. We arrived just in time to see all the local children being awarded their prizes and were delighted to see so many children taking part, our gardeners of the future.

from the Charnwood Borough Council offices on Southfield Road, Loughborough and must be returned by 4pm on Friday 29th September.

On the Sunday 10th September, I attended the Mayor of Charnwood Civic Service at the Holy Trinity Church, Barrow upon Soar. It was a well-attended lovely service, with lots of involvement from the children of the local schools. I also enjoyed the children ‘crowning’ the Mayor which was all taken in good spirit.

‘Your Charnwood, Your Say’ residents’ survey seeks views on the council but also about life in Charnwood. This survey is carried out every two years and asks people what their top priorities are. The Council wants to know what residents believe are the most important issues for them to tackle. The 2015 survey, completed by 1,078 people, found 82 per cent of residents who responded were satisfied with council services; 87 per cent of people were at least happy living in the area and 74 per cent of people who responded were satisfied with how their council tax money was being spent. The results helped develop the Council’s Corporate Plan, which sets out the Council's priorities up until 2020.

On Sunday 24th September, I attended the Newtown Linford Annual Scarecrow weekend. It was lovely to see the village embracing this weekend with some great scarecrows on display and the glorious weather we enjoyed all day. I was honoured to present the prizes to the winners on Sunday afternoon.

On Monday 4th September, I attended the funeral of Tony Kershaw at Loughborough Crematorium along with several other Borough and County Councillors to pay my respects. The Major of Charnwood and the Chairman of the County Council also attended. There was a lovely reading by Tony’s daughter called ‘Dash’ by Linda Ellis.

On the August bank holiday weekend, we also had a new addition to our family. We recused a dog that had been picked up by the dog warden as a stray. We think he is a Saluki cross and the vet thinks he is about 9 months old. We have called him Duke, please stop and say hello if you see us walking around the area as he is very friendly. As you can see from the photo he has settled down very quickly!

Extra signs are being introduced on taxis in Charnwood to help make them clearer and more identifiable for passengers. The changes on the 353 vehicles in the borough will be made over the next 12 months.

Bench at Doctors Some of you might have noticed the beautiful new bench outside the doctor’s surgery. This has been kindly donated by a local resident in memory of a member of their family and is a nice place to rest on the way to The Nook. I do hope you all enjoy this new bench.

Taxis in Charnwood

On Saturday 9th September, I attend Anstey Gala along with Edward Argar MP. The weather was not kind to us on the day but we managed to dodge the showers and walk around all the stalls and pop into the Community Library to say hello to everyone there. We then headed over to the Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show. As with the previous weekend there were some great fruit and vegetables on display and we had chance to talk to the Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bike Volunteers.

Charnwood Residents’ Surgery

Both of the Charnwood Borough Labour Councillors in the Hastings Ward, Loughborough resigned a few weeks ago. A By-Election has now been called and the election will take place on 26th October 2017. Forms of nomination for interested parties are available

Charnwood hope the extra signs will make it clearer for people and ensure there is a robust licensing system in place to ensure high standards of drivers and vehicles. In Charnwood, there are 155 hackney carriage taxis and 198 private hire vehicles. Under the new rules, all taxis will have Charnwood Borough Council licence plates on the front and rear of their vehicles instead of just the rear. Hackney carriages will now also have two white oval door signs bearing their licence number to make them more visible as well as a roof sign. Private hire vehicles will have yellow door signs and no roof sign.

Highways England Two multi-million pound schemes to reduce congestion and boost connectivity across the county and city have been given the green light. Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council have announced that improvements will be made after receiving

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

£10 million from Highways England’s Growth and Housing Fund. One of the schemes is within our area. A contribution of £5 million has been made available for a scheme between the A46 and the A563 outer ring road. This will see improvements made to the A46, A5630 Anstey Lane junction ahead of expected higher traffic levels from the Ashton Green housing development. The project will also support other housing developments in the north of Leicester in addition to Ashton Green. The scheme, which is partly funded by Highways England and Leicester City Council as the developer of Ashton Green will reduce congestion on an important route into Leicester. This will be achieved by: • Installing traffic lights on the A46 Leicester Road/Anstey Lane junction • Turning the section of Anstey Lane (A5630) between the A46 and Bennion Road roundabout into a dual carriageway • Improving the Bennion Road junction by widening the approaches on Anstey Lane in both directions and installing traffic lights. The work is expected to begin in April 2018 and will be completed in March 2019. Local residents and businesses will be informed beforehand.

The Nook, Anstey I have spent a large amount of time in the last few weeks trying to finalise the finish for the top of the new Nook roundabout. There were instructions sent to the contractors to tarmac over the top and not to add any planting. This was against all previous correspondence I had seen, against my wishes and I am sure against the wishes of the majority of residents who want to retain greenery in The Nook. There have been several organisations involved in this including Leicestershire County Council, Anstey Parish Council and the developers. The work on the roundabout has been put on hold at the moment and I am hoping we are nearly there with a decision to include some planting for the top of the roundabout. I am unable to provide you at the moment with any more details but I will be able to update you next month in my regular report.

….some facts about our rubbish…. • In the UK we produce enough rubbish every day to fill Trafalgar Square to the top of Nelson’s column • In the UK we have gone from zero recycling to a national average of 13% in the last few years • The UK generates 20,000 – 30,000 tonnes of wasted general purpose batteries every year but less than 1,000 tonnes are recycled • Almost 200 glass jars and bottles are thrown away in Britain every second • Every day 80 million food and drink cans end up in landfill • About 60% of the average dustbin contents are materials which can be turned into compost • Recycling a 1 metre stack of newspaper saves one tree

Anstey Community Library I have not mentioned Anstey’s great library for a while and the brilliant job all of our volunteers are doing in running the library and promoting more community events. It was great to pop in on Gala Day and see all the improvements that have taken place. At the beginning of October, the Community Library will celebrate its second birthday. This is a great achievement as the library provides a great asset, not only for Anstey but for all the surrounding villages as well.

We’ve also got a new football session in partnership with Fusion Lifestyle, who run our leisure centres in the borough. “We’re committed to helping children in Charnwood to stay active and healthy and these activities are a fun and affordable way of doing that.” Most of the activities are suitable for children of all ages and families are welcome to come and watch and take part in a number of events. The activities will be available to book from Monday, October 2. Activities on offer include: Yoga • Boxing • Football at Fusion Horse riding lessons • Den Building

Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local charity On Sunday 12 November 2017, local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust will be holding their annual JHMT Christmas craft fair. The event, at the Rawlins Academy in Quorn, will run from 11.00am-4.30pm and will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range of unique gifts made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. We will have a wide range of beautiful items for sale such as jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home wares and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards and even children’s books written by a local author. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of our amazing son Joe, a fun-loving, Rothley lad who was a talented artist. “After the success of last year’s craft fair, the demand for stalls has been so huge that we’ve had to move to a bigger venue. We are delighted so many talented local crafters and producers are so keen to showcase their talents in aid of Joe’s Trust ( JHMT).

Geocaching and Cycling Geocaching learning how to use GPS to find hidden objects

“The chasm which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name.

The price of activities starts from £3, with Wild Card holders benefiting from great discounts. If you are aged five to 16, or have a disability and live or go to school in Charnwood, get your hands on a Wild Card by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/wildcardnews

“Thanks to the amazing work of Joe’s army of helpers and volunteers, we have achieved so much in a short time. But there’s still so much to do, and by coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you too can help us a little further along our journey.”

For a full list of activities available this half-term, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/holiday programmes. To book, call 01509 634561 - lines will be open between 8.30am and 5pm - or email active.together@charnwood.gov.uk.

The craft fair is free to attend and everyone is welcome. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

The Only Way Is Up! Our Harvest Festival Bring and Buy was well attended, and we listened attentively as Samantha Houghton, the speaker, shared some of her life experiences with us, which may give hope to others going through difficult times, and showed that it is possible to improve matters for a better future. As a young child she went through many upheavals, such as when her workaholic father’s business failed, and the family lost their home, ending up in rented rooms. Around the same time she lost her grandfather as well. From about 10 years old she began suffering from anxiety attacks, and became afraid to leave the house, which disrupted her schooling and other normal activities. She also started having asthma attacks. Later at 14 years her closest friend turned against her and told lies about her, which led others to shun her company, and meant she would sometimes miss weeks of school, without any apparent notice being taken by the authorities. Sam looked for sources of help (not easy in the days before home computers), and eventually found the Samaritans, who listened

and helped her through difficult times. The school finally contacted her parents, and she saw the local GP; at 15 she was put onto anti-depressants which had unpleasant side effects. The truanting continued and she had many “dark thoughts, as she called it, but the school nurse tried to help her. She saw a psychiatrist in a hospital for adults, and was put on more tablets, scared and angry with the world.

Life began to seem better, and she found a boyfriend through advertising in the “Leicester Mercury, continuing with her dieting aided by a sympathetic psychiatric nurse. She got married and in her late 20s had a son she adored, enjoying being a mum and making new friends with a good social life.

Although she decided she wanted to go to college and gain some exams, it was difficult to cope and she remembers crying a lot and truanting again; however, the college

However, she then suffered from binge eating and bulimia for 12 years during her 20s and 30s, which is a hard cycle to break. Her GP helped her but depression hit her again and

Sam ended up in another hospital, on an adult ward this time, which was a horrible experience. The patients were largely ignored and were left in bed most of the time. When her medication was changed she felt a shift in her mood, and realised she was missing out on normal teenage activities like having a boyfriend. She decided to take her exams at college and also to get a job, and was very keen to lose some weight as well, which might help when dating.

Then she saw an educational psychologist, for whom there was a long waiting list, and she didn’t feel safe, but it did help. She was finally admitted to a specialist psychiatric unit for teenagers at the Towers Hospital, where she went first as a day patient, later going home only at weekends, over a period of 16 months. It coincided with her school exams and was very traumatic. Sometimes the patients did occupational therapy. Sam continued with her school work and was discharged home at 17, with no coping skills, continuing to visit the hospital as an outpatient.

counsellor helped her, and she succeeded in passing an exam in Food and Nutrition. This was followed by a period diagnosed as severe depression, with anxiety, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and some attempts at self-harming. At the age of 18 Sam tried again to pursue her interest in catering, and did much of the cooking at home. She enrolled on a two-year course, but as the time to leave drew nearer she panicked, and made an attempt to take her own life.

she underwent various therapies, making some changes in her life. The marriage eventually failed. Her husband had some problems too; and she realised that she had always expected her own parents to split up. Her father was never there, and her own mother had some food issues. She and her small son moved out and she had to find a job. Cognitive behaviour therapy helped her coping skills, and she worked hard at it. She started to retrain and to teach people, working for a charity. She went on a self development journey, and started her own business about five years ago making jewellery, which she loved (she had brought some lovely examples with her). Then Sam started to speak at events, not only about the business but also telling her story. But she was burning herself out, and had to slow down; she didn’t feel happy any more, so she let the business go and tried resting. The various drugs prescribed for her had numbed her feelings, and the family background was referred to as “emotional neglect”, which happens in many families. Writing was something that Sam had always enjoyed. She had done voluntary work with disadvantaged children, and decided to write her story. Once more she felt she was in a dark place, but then her mood lifted. Having discussed matters with a book publisher she was impatient to proceed, but

they wanted to move much more slowly, so eventually she took control back herself. There are many steps in publishing, but having made an internet video with the hope of using “crowd funding”, she found lots of people coming forward to offer help of various kinds, which really touched her, and “The Invisible Girl” came out in spring 2017. Copies were available to buy. Her aims were to share her experience and help to inspire others, whilst also healing her lingering feelings of shame about the bad things she had gone through. At this point in her life, with her son starting at university, she declares that you can change, and happiness is possible. In addition to beginning a second book, Samantha has created a business where people can find a coach or mentor to help them. She says she has always tried to help others, and that life is now amazing, ending her talk with a quotation

Alzheimer’s Society seeks volunteers to help make a difference to the lives of people with d ementia Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland is looking for volunteers to support people with dementia keep doing the things they love. The charity has launched a recruitment drive for ‘Side By Side volunteers’ to work across both counties. The service involves people with dementia and volunteers doing things such as visiting the gym, walking or visiting places of interest together. There are 12000 people living with dementia in Leicestershire and 600 people with dementia in Rutland, and that number is expected to rise. Suna Tilley, Alzheimer’s Society Side By Side Coordinator for Leicestershire and Rutland said: “The sad reality is that people with dementia can often become isolated and find it difficult to remain part of their community. Taking part in hobbies or activities they previously enjoyed can seem too difficult. This is what Side by Side aims to change. We currently have 36 volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland and we need to double that number. It's a flexible way to give your time and you really can make a huge difference to someone's life.’ Volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for expenses.

Seasonal Issues - Latest News From f Hedgehogs and minibeasts: Why not try to have a go at making a hide for a hibernating hedgehog too?! Gardeners tend to tidy their gardens in the autumn but please don’t be too tidy as hedgehogs and the minibeasts they feed on like longer grass and places under hedges.

Well we are heading into autumn and now is the time to think of the animals and wildlife that share our world as they start to increase their reserves to ensure that they survive the winter months. With a little time and effort we could all make a difference to the wildlife that might visit our gardens at this time of year.

Don’t forget to store all materials for burning away from the bonfire site and then move the material to make a safe bonfire a small distance away.

Feeding the birds: Why not make or buy a variety of foods to help the wild birds to survive the autumn and winter months? Bird cakes are quick to make and there is the added advantage of you being able to clear out your cupboards.

Moving the materials will ensure that hedgehogs, frogs, toads, newts and a myriad of minibeasts are not killed when the bonfire is lit.

Lard is the best fat to use for this (as a vegetarian I don’t tend to buy this except for bird cake making but we’ve tried the and the birds aren’t convinced!) alternatives

Fireworks: Talking of bonfires leads to the subject of fireworks. Love them or loath them we have to appreciate that many animals don’t like them. Animals hate the sight of the flashes, the noise of the bangs and screams, the smell of the fire and their senses are heightened more than ours are. This is particularly the case with outdoor caged pets, cats that are not brought in at night and for our wildlife.

• Warm the fat and mix in dried fruits, grated cheese, bread scraps, bird seed and crushed nuts. Do not include salt as this causes dehydration. • Stir until there is an even covering of the warmed fat. • Make a hole in the yogurt pot and put some string through before stuffing the container with the fatty mixture if you want to hang it.

Remember, don’t overwhelm your pet - as hard as it may sound, ignore their behaviour and be as normal as you can – don’t feed their fear by cuddling them tightly, or feeding them rich food treats as they have not eaten their tea. Do give them space and a chance to hide. Now is also the time to check that dog coats still fit and are in a good state of repair. Why not also check the batteries on any of the lights on collars to make sure they don’t let you down when you need them most! Check hutches and other housing to ensure that they are draught free and watertight – It won’t be long before the dark nights and the weather turns autumn into winter and our pets and wildlife deserve to be considered.

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society September’s talk to the Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society was from Jess Jenkins entitled ‘Burning Passions: the local struggle for women’s suffrage’. Her aim was to tell stories of less well-known women (and men) who took part in the fight for votes for women. There were many other women and organizations fighting for the vote, not just the well-known such as the Pankhursts, Emily Davison and the Women’s Social and Political Union. Firstly Jess reminded us that until the Reform Act of 1832 very few people had the right to vote at all. In 1866 when the first petition from women was sent to Parliament five Leicestershire women signed it, and there were1302 petitions between then and 1905, but it was not until 1928 women finally won equality. Many had been campaigning peacefully for 40 years before Christabel Pankhurst realized that only protests and arrest would raise awareness in the minds of politicians. In 1884 the new Reform Bill gave all male householders the vote, but still ignored the claims of women. The Leicester and Leicestershire Women’s Suffrage Society was founded in 1887 following a successful meeting at which Millicent Fawcett spoke in Leicester (she would later come to the very forefront of the women’s suffrage movement). Various well-to-do local ladies were involved in the

early movement including Edith Gittins, a corn-dealers daughter and Sunday school teacher and Mrs Agnes Fielding Johnson, who was manager of Wyggeston Girls School and also campaigned for a maternity hospital in the city.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ANSTEY

As protests became more militant, women from Leicester joined protest marches and demonstrations. The Joint Women’s Franchise Demonstration (1907) included, among others, Mrs Margaret Ramsey McDonald wife of the MP. Alice Hawkins who worked in the boot and shoe industry and her husband Alfred were arrested by the police on many occasions and Alice imprisoned seven times. Among other men who supported women in their fight was Henry Nevinson a founder member of the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage.

Royal British Legion Charity Number 219279

Successive governments failed to take the claim for women’s suffrage seriously, but in1914 the start of the First World War put an end to the militant campaigns. In 1918 The Representation of the People Act enfranchised all men and women over the age of 30. Finally in 1928, The Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act, gave the vote to all women over 21 on equal terms with men. If you would like to read more, Jess Jenkins has written a book entitled ‘The Burning Question: the struggle for women’s suffrage in Leicestershire.’ IBSN 978-0-85022-487-0. Printed by Leicestershire County Council. The next meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston, on Tuesday 17th October at 7.30pm. Christopher Dyer will ask ‘What have mediaeval peasants done for us?’ Visitors are welcome. http://www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 23rd August and 21st September 2017.

A vigilant community at work! During this crime review period, a vigilant and community spirited resident reported to Police on telephone number 101 a suspicious vehicle parked on the pavement and insecure on Link Road. This was reported at around 07.30am and attended by local officers about 30 minutes later. On doing relevant checks on this vehicle it transpired that the registered keeper was actually in Police custody having been arrested during the early hours of the morning for an attempted theft from a vehicle on Bradgate Road. Due to the residents call to Police to report this vehicle, we were able to link it with the prisoner immediately and have the vehicle recovered for a full search. This search revealed further items linked to other vehicle breaks outside of Anstey and so the prisoner was further arrested and charged with all offences (including the Anstey one) within just a few hours. This was great work by the Link Road resident who has been thanked by Police, and goes to show that just one call to Police to report something ‘out of place’ can be that missing piece of the ‘jigsaw’ that could ultimately lead to successful arrests and convictions.

HOT! Sadly, I am not talking about the weather (we had our 2 weeks of summer!) but really following on from the reporting of something ‘out of place’ (as with the example of the car described above). This time however it relates to something far more serious and something that is being raised in our minds more and more with recent tragic events – Terrorism. I am sure that we are not at any more risk in Anstey than anywhere else, however it is a good opportunity to remind all residents that they can play an active role in ensuring that their community remains safe – whether you live or indeed work in the community. In particular, I am talking about suspicious unattended items or packages. If you see what you believe is a suspicious item or package then please think – HOT! and consider the following:

Crime Figures 23rd Aug 2017 to 21st Sept 2017

Burglary Dwelling – 7 Road, Cropston Road x 2, Link George Street, Dalby Road, Hazle head Road, Fairhaven Road

Burglary - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc)

Theft of Motor Vehicle – 1 (inc Attempts) – Ned Ludd Close (Motorbike) Theft from Motor Vehicle - 3 (inc Attempts) – Dalby Road, Bradgate Road, Netherfield Road

Damage to Motor Vehicle – 1 George Street

Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Kitchener Road

Criminal Damage - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) -

Theft Store – 1 Co-op Pharmacy

Theft Cycle – 0

Theft Property -

H – is the item/package Hidden?

O – is the item/package Obviously suspicious – i.e.: wires seen etc.

T - is the item/package Typical for the area where it is located – i.e.: a rucksack left in a toilet cubicle would be deemed ‘out of place’.

If after using HOT you remain concerned, then ask around to see if anybody owns the item/package or knows who it belongs to. If the response is negative then politely ask all persons to move away from the item/package (at least 100 metres) and call Police on 999 immediately. NEVER TOUCH THE ITEM/PACKAGE Hopefully, such circumstances may never arise, however remembering HOT! may just be enough for you to save lives. ‌‌and as previously stated we would rather you call us even if it does turn out to be a false alarm. If anybody has any information about the recorded crimes then please speak with your local officers, or if you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111
