Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The summer activities of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club continued in July with a ‘members and guest’ event. This was a ‘garden trail’ in Cropston. The first garden was on a reasonably steep slope but was very cleverly designed to use the slope to advantage with terraces on different levels. The planting in the garden was also very creative which helped the different levels blend together. Gardening Club members and guests spent about an hour admiring this garden. The second garden was much bigger than the first and was packed full of wonderful plants for us all to enjoy. As well as the lovely garden there was also excellent food, drink, and warm hospitality. A number of members prepared food, and the garden owners provided an excellent BBQ and drink. This was the second year this event had been held and this year it attracted over 50 members and guests. It was an informal social event, based on local gardens, where members and guests were able to relax and socialise. The Club committee wish to thank all those who contributed to the event. Gardening Club activities and meetings for the rest of the year Sat 7th Sept – 30th Annual Garden, Craft & Produce Show (Open to All). To be held at The Richard Hill Primary School, Anstey Lane, Thurcaston Wed 9th October, 7.45 pm – Plants that Excite Dr Andrew Ward Wed 13th November, 7.45 pm – An Old Fashioned Christmas – Felicity Austin Wed 11th December, 7.45 pm – Social Evening and Quiz Night Although we are over half way through the year, it is still possible to join the Gardening Club. The membership fee is based on a pro rota basis, or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try. For more information of any of these events call Dave Haddon on (0116) 235 9758

DON’T REPLACE RESTORE

Be a Messy Gardener This autumn, don’t clean up your garden too much for the winter – leave some messy bits. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds fears that ‘sterile’ gardens where nature cannot survive are contributing to the decline in wildlife. Instead, build ‘homes for nature’, urges the RSPB: leave some weeds and garden debris, let the grass stay long, don’t cut all the nettles, leave the odd log to rot, and cut a hole in your fence for the hedgehogs. You can also fill a bucket with woodchips, soil and rotten branches for insects. Or fill up an old washing bowl with water and gravel to create a ‘mini pond’. Many celebrity gardeners applaud this approach. Monty Don of the BBC’s Gardener’s World recently tweeted: ‘Do not strive after tidiness’. The RSPB campaign is in response to a report that 60 per cent of species in the UK have suffered declines in the past few decades. Our sparrows, starlings, grass snakes, frogs, voles and badgers need our help to breed, move around and survive. Mike Clarke, chief executive of the RSPB, says: “Nature in the UK is in trouble. Gardens provide a valuable lifeline for species like starlings, toads, hedgehogs and butterflies, which are struggling to find homes in the wider countryside. Although the overall problem is huge, the solution can start on a small scale....Our aim is to provide one million homes for nature across the UK, because if there is no home for nature, then there’s no nature – it really is that serious.”

News from Anstey Surgery Patient Participation Group If you are aged between 40 and 74 years of age then you may be about to receive an invitation to book yourself a free health screening appointment. We would strongly urge all patients who receive the invitation to take advantage of this service. The aim of the appointment is to undertake a series of basic health checks, for example, height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol etc. In doing this the medical staff can ascertain whether or not you are at risk of developing further complications later on such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke or kidney disease. If caught early many such conditions can be successfully treated and managed. If left undetected then the full-blown condition may require long and complicated life changing treatment. These health checks are part of a national campaign throughout England and have been adopted in many areas. To date several patients with early signs of pre-diabetic trends have been identified. This has been managed and they are now looking at a healthier and brighter future. If you already attend the surgery regularly for checks then you may not receive the invitation as your health is already being monitored. But for the rest of you, now’s your chance to have a full MOT.

Anstey WI

Anstey Gala 2013

In July, Anstey WI held a fundraising coffee evening at the home of member June Roe. As the date clashed with another event in the village, there was some apprehension beforehand, but members and friends rallied round to make it a great success. Some of the proceeds will go to a local charity. In August member Heather Savage led a most interesting guided walk around the village. Even those who had lived in Anstey for a long time learned something, and were able to contribute information of their own. Who knew that the jetty alongside Falcon Road is called Stew Balk, an ancient right of way allowing villagers to drive their cattle to graze the common field. In the attached photograph, it appears that the naughty ones at the back of the class were not paying attention!

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society As a follow-up to the excellent talk by Roger Willson in March this year, our final summer outing was on Saturday 17th August when we were able to visit four individually unique and historic churches, accompanied by Roger who acted as our enthusiastic guide. Apart from visiting the churches, one of the pleasures of this outing was travelling through the countryside of middle England and enjoying its late summer splendour, despite the prevailing overcast skies of the day. Our first destination in Rutland was the small village of Brooke, near Oakham, and the parish church of St. Peter. Roger began by pointing out various external features of the building (as he did at all four churches) which indicated different building periods and styles of architecture. At St. Peter’s, the 13th century tower is a compilation of building in different centuries, resulting in it looking a little topheavy. The south doorway is Norman, but there are signs of later restoration work. The “piece de resistance” of this church is its considerable Elizabethan structure dating from 1579 and the fact that it has survived intact over the centuries regardless of the influences of extreme Puritanism under Oliver Cromwell or the much later Victorian urge for renovation. Next, we moved on to the tiny village of Stoke Dry where the church of St. Andrew stands on a hill with superb views over the surrounding countryside as well as towards Eyebrook Reservoir. Again, the church has features of Norman origins, with much evidence of building and developments at other times, such as the lower part of the tower dating probably from the 13th century, the Chantry Chapel which has a beam dated 1574 and the north porch with a parvis (priest’s room) situated over the porch being of the Tudor period. The Digby family, who were staunch Roman Catholics, were one-time owners of Stoke Dry and Sir Everard Digby was one of the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot (1604

/ 1605) – his connection with this led to the fanciful belief that the plot might have been hatched within the confines of the small priest’s room above the north porch of St. Andrew’s Church! Sir Everard was hanged for treason in 1606 and the family moved away to their West Country estate. An alabaster slab in the south aisle commemorates an earlier member of the Digby Family, Jaquetta Digby, who died on 29th June 1496 – her husband (also an Everard Digby) was killed fighting on the Lancastrian side during the Wars of the Roses at the Battle of Towton on 29th March 1461. The church also contains some fine, restored Mediaeval wall paintings. Travelling on just a short distance, we arrived at the village of Lyddington. Lunch was first on the agenda, some of our group braving the chilly breeze to picnic on the village green, while others headed for the comfort of one of the local hostelries, The White Hart, to sample the fare on offer. Suitably refreshed, we walked the short distance to Lyddington parish church, which like Stoke Dry, is dedicated to St. Andrew. The original church dates from the 14th century and, again, there have been further extensions / alterations over the years, such as the nave and aisles being rebuilt in the latter part of the 15th century, through to the later construction of the vestry in 1849, restoration work within the church in 1890 and restoration of the tower in 1902. An interesting feature is that the altar is entirely surrounded by communion rails, made in 1635. This was done in recognition of the prevailing Puritanism of the time and to enact a simpler form of worship where parishioners gather around a table to resemble the Last Supper. The incumbent at that time, Rev Richard Rudd, held strong Puritan beliefs and was supported by Bishop Williams of Lincoln. The Bede House, adjacent to the church, is also well worth a visit. Our final destination was just over the county border into north Northamptonshire where we

saw the 12th century church of St. Mary the Virgin in Ashley. There is evidence to suggest there may have been an earlier church on the site, either late Saxon or early Norman. The tower has displays of stone tablets containing Coats of Arms, one of which is that of the Bassett family. Richard Bassett was Chief Judiciar of England in the 12th century, second only to the King, and Richard founded Launde Abbey in 1119. In the church, the decoration of the nave is quite plain but elegant, with plain floor tiles. The elaborate Italian marble font was given to the church by the wealthy Rector of the time, Rev. Richard Thomas Pulteney, and is believed to have cost £2000 in 1857. It was this same Rector who initiated the restoration and refurbishment of the church which took place around 1866 and it seems that no expense was spared. Improvements were made to the nave including new flooring and pews, plus heating and lighting systems, but the transformation of the chancel in 1867 was truly magnificent and its elaborate decoration has to be seen in all its glory to be fully appreciated. It could be said that style came full circle to embrace the décor of a bygone era and the Ecclesiological propaganda of the mid-19th century. There are many other splendid artefacts and points of interest in this church, too numerous to mention here. Many thanks to Roger for making the day so interesting, to Steve at Ashley church who served us with most welcome drinks and to Jane and Peter Smith for carefully researching the day’s itinerary. Jennifer Kennington On Tuesday 17th September we return to our regular venue of the Harrison Room at All Saints’ Church when we shall hear Canon Anne Horton talk about Rothley Garden Suburb – time 7.30pm. All welcome. Visitors £3.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello again everyone I do hope you all had a good holiday and are looking forward to the long haul to Christmas!!! The nights are again slowly drawing in and despite my protestations about turning off over 200 of the street lights in Anstey the County Council will be going ahead with the scheme soon to switch off all these street lights from midnight to 5.30am. I do hope no-one in the dark, trips over the increase in motor bikes which seem to be taking up more and more room, parking on our pavements. If you do have any difficulty with the big switch off please get in touch with me and I will try to get you re-luminated!! My street will be very dark. You can also contact County Hall direct. If you would like to discuss this further please ring Clive Hodges on 0116 3057224. Or email siobhan.woodward@leics.gov.uk CHARNWOOD SPORTS AWARDS 2013. Thinking caps on? Then why not put their names forward by nominating them in the Charnwood Sports Awards 2013 organised by Charnwood Borough Council. Nominations are now being sought for the awards which recognise the achievements of teams and individuals as well as the work of dedicated volunteers. The closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday, October 4, 2013. There is a presentation evening planned for Monday, December 2, 2013, at Burleigh Court, off Ashby Road, Loughborough. Previous award-winners cannot be nominated and all nominees must live or represent a club in the Charnwood Borough.

There are lots of different categories to choose from so get your form now, and get voting. The nominations can be submitted by filling in a form, available from the Borough Council’s offices in Southfield Road; at Loughborough, Soar Valley and South Charnwood leisure centres or online at: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ charnwoodsportsawards SMALL BUSINESSES? Recently the Conservative Party with cross party support launched the Supporting Small Business campaign, led by Matthew Hancock MP for West Suffolk who has been appointed the governments Small Business Champion. Twelve Small Business Ambassadors have been selected nationwide and will help promote and represent small businesses. Launching on December 7, 2013 (the busiest shopping day of the year) the independent one day campaign is set to support small business owners by encouraging consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities on both the day and beyond. The initiative has already received support from the prime minister and leading organisations, corporate firms and entrepreneurs including the Federation of Small Businesses, the Retail Trade Association, O2 and Dragons’ Den star James Caan. The campaign originally began in America in 2010 with backing from president Obama and has since raised over £3.5bn in sales for small businesses. It’s hoped the scheme will be similarly received in Britain. There are around 4.8 million businesses in the

UK. The vast majority are small businesses, the lifeblood of our economy. Alone they account for almost half of overall employment and over a third of the UK’s turnover. The Government recognizes the huge importance of small businesses to the UK economy and is supporting them in a number of ways including giving up to £2000 off National Insurance for every business through the Employment Allowance. It may help small businesses in our community why not give it a whirl. You can find out full details of the campaign at:-: enquiries@bis.gsi.gov.uk alternatively I do have Mr. Hancock’s office number. CROPSTON CRICKET CLUB. Being a CBC committee member of CSARA (Charnwood Sports and recreation Alliance) I was glad to give my support for a grant of £800 towards the purchasing of some new gang mowers for their Waterfield Road ground. The club works very hard and has a thriving junior section. This grant will make Steve Hickingbottom, chief grounds man at the club job a lot easier. Steve is the son of former Leicestershire wicket keeper Geoff Hickinbottom. COUNCILLORS NEWS Sadly I have to report the passing of one of my fellow borough councillors Cllr. Bernard Burr, aged 82. He represented Shepshed West on the Borough Council from 1987 until 1995 then became a councillor again for Shepshed in 2007 until his death on Friday, August 16, 2013. He served as the Borough’s First Citizen, supported by his wife Rose, in 2011/2012. During his year as Mayor of Charnwood, he helped raise more than £8,000 for the British

Heart Foundation and Age UK. In his year as mayor he and his wife came to Anstey to open the hearing aid centre on Stadon Road and spent a sunny Saturday morning with Lion Roger Gamble, other Bradgate Lions Club members and myself supporting “Vista.” Flags were flown at half-mast at the Council offices and Loughborough Town Hall on the day of Cllr Burr’s funeral. He will be sadly missed. We have also had 3 resignations from Charnwood borough council recently which will result in 3 by elections. Due to relocation Cllr Chris Carter (Labour) has resigned, creating a vacancy for. Loughborough Ashby ward, a by election will be held on 5th September. Cllr. Jitu Choudbury (Labour) as also given his notice in for Loughborough Hastings ward, and due to work commitments Cllr. Matthew Blain (Cons) has resigned, creating a vacancy for the Wreake Villages, a by election is to be held on 12th September 2013. NHS 65 YEARS OLD. On July 5th 2013 our National Health Service became a pensioner!! We see reports saying its creaking and about to collapse but without the experts at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield General, where I would have been now who knows. My heart is on the mend (Tick!) but I do receive top ups of blood and platelets on a regular basis.

Donors are desperately needed especially for platelets which have a very short shelf life and can be given far more frequently than blood. If you could spare the time to “give some” (about 90mins) to help me, as well as many others, please get in touch by ringing 0300 123 2323 or visiting 84 Vaughan Way, Leicester LE1 4SJ. We at Charnwood Borough council are currently running a survey on council services, but not many of you out there (approx. 171,000) have so far responded. Leader of CBC Cllr. David Slater and myself for that matter would like more of you to take part. We really value your comments whatever they may be!! A series of road shows will be out and about and the consultation will continue until the end of September 2013. To find out more about the survey or request a paper copy ring CBC 01509 634584. Or email lyn.smith@charnwood.gov.uk you may also like to include me in your email thoughts. The survey is open to all residents in Charnwood and has been designed to ensure we put you at the heart of all we do. By filling the survey in you could also be entered into our draw for one of seven £50 Love2Shop vouchers, and - get a FREE day pass to use at our leisure centres in Charnwood. Whoh!

AND FINALLY... Sorry if I upset Mr. Ken Schofield with my comment about the RSPCA who do a wonderful job. Don’t forget Anstey’s Gala day Saturday 21st September from 12 noon. Good weather has been ordered!! I hope the RSPCA have a stall that I can support; I know Anstey & Glenfield Cricket Club will be holding a bowling competition which I “seem” to be sponsoring? *Although I have been off work for some time I have been walking round the village testing shoes for sturdiness and hardwearing. But its “sole” destroying really!! *Sorry about that one. Please get in touch through the usual channels if you think I can help. TTFN!

the last time someone wanted me for my body I was filling out an organ donor card Apparently diet books are popular because they appeal to a wide audience.

business” for Thomas Cook duly commenced. We saw his house “Thorneycroft” was built in London Road, Leicester.

Not only were we made aware in considerable detail, of the lives of the mentioned people, but we had sight of the individuals and their houses, by means of slides beautifully presented. For many members the talk awakened memories and for others like myself , the various successful individuals whose names were heard in Social Studies in our school days.

The above are just typical of the amount of information appertaining to many more illustrious characters spoken about, living dotted about the streets of Leicester; all of which helped in diverse ways to create the ensuing wealth and history of the city of Leicester.

Amongst the famous names mentioned were Thomas Fielding Johnson who was a prominent Victorian business man and philanthropist in Leicester. He was noted for gifting in 1919, 37 acres of land for the site for the establishment of Leicester University. His home was “Brookfield” in Stoneygate from 1869 up until his death in 1921. He was affectionately known as “The Grand Old Man” Thomas Cook was the world’s best known name in travel. He started from being a 32 year old Cabinet Maker and Baptist Minister, walking from Market Harborough to Leicester, when it occurred to him that many social problems could be solved with education derived from the opportunity to travel. In 1841 he set about enlisting the aid of The Midland Railway Co. and he introduced a successful one day rail excursion for a shilling per person from Leicester to Loughborough. 500 passengers boarded the train and so the “travel

In celebration of two Birthdays for Mesdames Gill Smart and Diana Whatton, the members were treated to delicious Meringues to enjoy with their cups of Tea. Mrs. Anne Frisby was the lucky recipient of a lovely Pashmina scarf from the Free prize draw – already for Winter!! Our next Meeting for the Club will be on Monday 9th September; a Harvest Bring and Buy, which will be a fund raising event for “The Salvation Army” our Charity for this year. Everyone is welcome and it would be appreciated if there could be generous support in respect of anything saleable, cakes large or small, fruit and vegetables, tinned or fresh, to boost the Fund collection. There will also be in-house entertainment plus, of course, refreshments. For enquires please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an answerphone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call. Ann Farndon

In place of a guest demonstrator, the evening opened with an illustrated talk about the life and work of Gertrude Jekyll. This was followed by contributions from three Flower Club members who had found inspiration in Jekyll's influence on garden design, showing in turn: the woodland garden; the blend of flowers and architectural elements; and the use of colour in an Arts and Craft setting. The vote of thanks acknowledged the level of skill within the Club.

Lady Drivers in the hot seat! The Fire Fighters Charity and British Red Cross are once again giving women throughout the country the unique opportunity to drive weird and wonderful vehicles at the Leicestershire annual Ladies Driving Challenge! On 13 October 2013, The Fire Fighters Charity and British Red Cross will visit Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Near Lutterworth, Leicestershire, to give women the chance to drive a variety of large and unusual vehicles in the ‘Ladies Driving Challenge’. Participants will be able to try their hand at manoeuvring a range of different vehicles such as fire engines, steam engines, trucks, combine harvesters and tractors, all kindly donated by local organisations. Mary Morgan, Senior Community Fundraiser at British Red Cross said, “The Ladies Driving Challenge promises to be an exciting day, with the chance to operate a fantastic collection of vehicles often associated with male drivers. Other types of driving events can be uncomfortably competitive with an emphasis on speed, and this has been known to put off some women. The Women-only Challenge is much more relaxed with the focus on handling vehicles with skill and enjoying new experiences, as well as raising money for a good cause. The event is always very popular and we expect places to fill early so we urge participants to register as early as possible and guarantee their place.” The challenge is to drive a wide variety of weird and wonderful vehicles! Each Ladies Driving Challenge is unique, but at any given event you can look forward to driving at least four or five different types of vehicle. Expert tuition throughout ensures you enjoy the special day to the full. All women over the age of 17 with a full driving licence are welcome to join in the fun during either the morning or afternoon sessions. Registration costs £10 and entrants are asked to raise a minimum of £90 in sponsorship. All proceeds from the event will be split evenly between The Fire Fighters Charity and British Red Cross. Laura Harden, Regional Fundraising Officer at The Fire Fighters Charity explained, “Behind the fun, there is a very serious message that we are supporting those heroic fire fighters who risk their lives for us. When they run into a burning building, there is always the very real risk of serious injury, and when the worst happens not only fire fighters suffer, but also their families. The Fire Fighters Charity helps support injured fire fighters, both physically and emotionally, enabling them to return to work faster. Unbelievably, the Charity receives no government funding and relies entirely from beneficiary and public donations”. The annual event last year raised around £13,000 to support both The Fire Fighters Charity - the official organisation which exists for fire fighters during their times of need and assists thousands of injured individuals every year by providing pioneering treatment and support services and British Red Cross who supported over 40,000 people in the local area in 2012 including valued support to the Fire and Rescue services by way of their Fire and Emergency Support Service. The Ladies Driving Challenge is the perfect opportunity to do something different for the day with friends and family members. To take part, entrants should register online at: www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/ldc or they can contact Mary Morgan at mmorgan@redcross.org.uk or call 0116 271 6258.

Nicky Morgan MP supports Guide Dogs' call to keep pedestrians safe from silent menace Nicky has supported Guide Dogs’ call for the installation of a vital safety feature on quiet hybrid and electric vehicles to keep pedestrians safe, by attending a reception at the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 26 June. The Loughborough MP was amongst the large number of Members of Parliament who backed the charity's call to install artificial noise generators on quiet vehicles.

Research shows that some quiet vehicles cannot be heard until one second before impact and, in certain conditions, are more likely to be involved in a collision with a pedestrian than conventional vehicles. Guide Dogs held the reception, where Transport Minister Norman Baker spoke, to highlight the charity’s concerns about the safety implications of vehicles that cannot be heard. Nicky said: “I realised when I did my blindfold walk with a guide dog in April 2012 just how important it is to be able to hear vehicles. I welcome this campaign and will be raising it with Department for Transport Ministers.” James White, Guide Dogs' Campaigns Manager, said: "As the number of quiet vehicles increases on our roads, we need to ensure they are safe. Blind and partially sighted people rely on the sound of an engine to cross a road safely. If you can’t see or hear a car then how do you know it is there?”

People say 60 is the new 40... the cop that pulled me over this morning disagreed.

Anstey Rugby Football Club Anstey rugby club are a small club based obviously in Anstey. The playing squad though are from villages from around the area both locally in Cropston, Thurcaston and Groby and as far away as Syston and Wigston. There are also players from Leicester playing for us which proves that the Western bypass can indeed be crossed. In recent seasons Anstey have done quite well winning two Leicestershire Presidents Cups and also the Birstall 7 a side competition. Small clubs though need new blood on a fairly regular basis or they will struggle and so it was for us last season and despite our young side competing well they were not experienced enough and were relegated from our league. In early June a new committee led by Chairman Ian Pollock was elected. Next season our Captain will be Rana Karwan and vice Captain Sean Elliott. If anybody from the area around Anstey fancies trying their hand at playing rugby then please feel free to get in touch on 07570 598513.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to this months Police Matters from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The published crime figures cover the month of July and up to and including 18 August 2013. The crime figures have raised a number of issues as the village has suffered a number of crimes in the various groups. You will note the large number of damage to vehicles on Groby Rd. This was a crime spree that occurred overnight 15/16 July and understandably had a great effect on the victims involved. A number of vehicles suffered damage caused by the use of a sharp implement, leaving large scratches to a number of panels on each vehicle. Police are still investigating this senseless crime and a witness appeal has been published in the Leicester Mercury. If anybody has any information that would assist in our enquiries then please contact us on 101. We have also suffered some shed/garage breaks over the period and now is a good time to remind all residents of security: • Ensure your outbuilding is secured with a good lock (consider using a ‘shed alarm’) • Consider extra security on garages at there weakest points (consider internal bolts / bars etc) • Ensure your property is well lit externally (Flooding the area with light can be a great deterrent) It is important to realise that we are not just trying to prevent theft from the shed and other outbuildings; we are also trying to

stop the thief from accessing garden tools they could use to break into your property. It’s also an unfortunate fact that at least 20% of sheds aren’t even locked! On a positive note, I can confirm that a male was arrested and charged for 2 of the store thefts at the Co-op, and a male has been arrested and remanded to court for the theft from motor vehicle on The Close and other offences. A reminder that good Police work and the help of the local community will always get results. Finally, we look forward to seeing you at the Anstey Gala on 21st September 2013, where, alongside the hard working Anstey Neighbourhood Watch teams, there will also be a joint Police / Charnwood Borough Council stand where residents can speak with officers about any issues that may be affecting their way of life. As always, if you see any activity that you consider suspicious then please call the Police on 101 or 999 if you feel a crime is actually taking place and the suspects may still be at the scene. For anybody who has any information on crime they wish to pass then please call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Jon Wilson-My Journey (So Far) I have always been a larger than average individual but never more so than I got prior to starting my Slimming World journey. November of 2002, I was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident, receiving numerous broken bones along with extensive internal injuries and spending 6 weeks in intensive care, this major event in my life was just the start of what can only be described in the same way as Queen Elizabeth penned her bad year as being an "annus horiblis" during which my Grandma died (my last grandparent), our car blew up, we had a burst water tank flooding the house and just when I was getting back to work, albeit part time, the company I was working for went bankcrupt resulting in my redundancy.

me to the Psychology team. After numerous visits and treatment I was at the point where I was willing to take action and combat my problem, my wife, Ann-Marie had joined Anstey Slimming World in October of 2012 and seeing what fantastic results she was achieving and the kind of food she was enjoying, and with her assertion that the group and the consultant were fantastic and supportive I bit the bullet and came to my first meeting in January of this year, I was made to feel so welcome by all the members and the consultant Marie. I must admit I was terrified my first time weighing in, that small step of 2 or 3 inches to get on the scales really does feel like Everest when you get on them for the first time and face up to reality, but I did and it felt strangely liberating like a weight was lifted from my shoulders, almost a problem shared is a problem halved kind of event. The first week just seemed to fly by and I felt that there was no way I could lose weight as I felt that I was eating much more than I had before, even though it was all healthy. I made sure I optimised 100%, filled in my diary religiously and studied the food optimising book from cover to cover, even working out the syn value on some of my favourite takeaway meals, horrifying to say the least.

In total I spent 8 months on the sick recuperating from my injuries and did little or no exercise instead spending my days comfort eating, all the wrong foods. My weight spiraled out of control to such an extent that on a regular visit to my GP he expressed intense concern and in desperation in 2009 referred me to the Leicester Dietetics team to try and help me to control my eating and reduce my weight. After maybe my second visit to the dietician she recognised that I was still suffering from Post-Traumatic stress disorder, a direct result of the accident suffered 7 years previously. She decided that my weight would remain uncontrollable until my mind was in the right place and referred

Anyway weigh in night came around and again I was filled with trepidation when I came to my turn to take that enormous step onto the scales, absolutely sure I could not have lost anything. I looked at the display and had to do a double take as they registered a loss that was staggering of 14 pounds; yes I lost a whole stone in my first week! That event hooked me completely to Slimming World and since that first starting point I have now lost a total of 6 Stones 4 1/2 pounds.

All of my oversized clothes have now had to be disposed of as they are too large (I donated all my oversized stuff to the Clothes swap to raise money for charity), I have now gone down past the smallest clothes that were in my wardrobe and have now had to invest in a whole new wardrobe.Since losing the weight I have lost so far my knees no longer hurt, I do not get out of breath climbing the stairs, and I have much more energy. More importantly to me my motorcycle seems to handle and perform better now that it is not lugging around those extra excess pounds. I am not at my target yet and I know that I have quite away ahead of me but feel I have made a phenomenal start of the journey. I am a total convert to Slimming World and do not mind telling everyone how easy and effective the plan is to follow, so much so that some of my work colleagues call me a Slimming World Bore. Both me and my wife have now joined Marie’s social team and take an active part in group and our Facebook group discussions, giving whatever help and encouragement we can to new and existing members, I have made so many good friends at the group and am looking forward to making many more on my journey to a healthier future, I now consider my Wednesday night at Slimming World as much a social evening as a diet class, I love my Slimming World family

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Anstey Library. I made a visit recently to the Anstey Library where I was pleased to see so many young children taking up the opportunity to be involved in the activities that are on offer by the County Council’s Library Service during the summer holiday period. I was also interested to find out more information about the books on prescription scheme which is recommended and endorsed by health professionals. The books provide helpful information and stepby-step self-help techniques for managing common conditions, including depression and anxiety. The books have also been recommended by experts and have been tried and tested and found to be useful. Although these books can sometimes work on their own, research has shown that self-help approaches work best when there is support from a health professional. This scheme is supported by local libraries, it is easy to join and visit, where I am sure more information will be available about the scheme. Indeed I am told if the book is not available in your local library it can be reserved, free reservations for this scheme are available in most libraries. Don’t Muck Around Awards. Further to the information I supplied in my last report on the awards, I have now been contacted by Pam Crankshaw asking me if I would communicate her contact details to residents who may like to have more information on the groups she has set up. You may recall Pam led a group of volunteers in the Woodhouse Parish to improve the local environment by litter picking within the Parish. Pam has now recruited volunteer litter pickers in neighbouring villages including Thurcaston and Cropston. I know Pam would be particularly pleased to hear from residents who would be interested in joining her litter picking wardens. e-mail pam.crankshaw1@gmail.com or telephone 01509 890930 Changes to Street Lighting. I had some discussions with residents about the County Council’s proposals to change the levels of street lighting. From April 2010 the

County Council started a four year programme to reduce street lighting levels in the County in order to make savings on energy costs , reduce carbon emissions and reduce light pollution. In addition the Council are using low energy bulbs when installing a new street light or undertaking lantern replacements on existing street lights. They provide a similar level of illumination whilst reducing energy consumption by around 30%. Already most Parishes within my Division have been converted to the part-night scheme, where lights are switched off between midnight and 5.30am. Anstey Parish is due to convert later this year. Before the scheme is implemented a highways-related risk assessment is carried out, where potential hazards are deemed to exist or are likely, the proposal for part-time lighting would not be implemented. For example, where there is a particularly sharp bend, a busy junction or where significant pedestrian activity is likely after midnight. To complete the risk assessment process non-highway risks are looked at, such as crime and anti-social behaviour where the Police are consulted on the proposals, Parish Councils are also consulted. I understand in general the Police comment on the countywide part-night project is that since inception there seems to have been no rise in the level of night time crime in the converted areas, indeed if anything there seems to be a slight drop in some cases. Schemes are monitored for three years after implementation and if any issues arise appropriate action will be taken. Have Your Say. I am hopeful you have received the latest edition of Leicestershire Matters from the County Council. This featured the need for the County Council to cut costs by a third. Leicestershire County Council is asking residents for their views on how it can save £100 million over the next five years. Faced with further reductions in government grants and rising demand for care and other services the Council will have to cut budgets further and look at new ways to of delivering services.

The County Council wants the public to help it decide its priorities. Therefore I would be grateful if residents would take a short time to register their views on line at www.leics.gov.uk/future or complete the questionnaire included in the middle of Leicestershire Matters. The closing date for the survey is the 15th September 2013. If you have any other queries regarding the survey please call 0116 3050002. Possible areas for savings include: Developing alternative services jointly with other authorities and agencies, although this may take time to realise savings: Further efficiency savings and consideration of a service commissioning approach: Service reductions – in light of residents consultation results, looking at the scope for savings in all services. Cycle Theft. As chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership I was concerned about the latest information showing an increase in cycle theft within the Charnwood area. I would like to make cycle owners aware how important it is to keep cycles secure, even if they are just left unattended for a short time. Remembering cycle theft remains one of the easiest crimes to commit, therefore make sure they are out of sight when not in use and apply some form of security such as a cycle D lock which is difficult to remove. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

September’s News From Anstey NHW Hope you all had a very good summer and enjoyed all that glorious sunshine. Anstey Gala Anstey NHW will be attending this event once again. This year we have decided to hold a tombola please come and support us. We will also have a few safety leaflets and security items for sale. If anyone has any concerns or wishes to set up a NHW scheme in their location, please come and have a chat to us. Anstey Youth Cafe will also be having a stall. Dog Fouling The NHW coordinator for Link Road, has received a few complaints about dog fouling and empty bottles being left on the Rugby pitch at the back of the Martin School. Those people responsible for their dogs please remember that this is a public place and YOU are required to pick up your dogs mess. Just has, you would if it was in the street.

Lots of lovely cats and kittens require homes - can you help? This year we have been quite successful with re-homing dogs and rabbits from the Sanctuary, but for some reason, re-homing of cats (and kittens) has become quite slow. We have about 28 cats, and now new kittens, looking forward to being noticed by our visitors and to becoming a part of a new family in their forever home. Come and visit them, including: Billy, Chandler, Esme, Fluffy, Garfield, Ginger, Lola, Oscar, Tabs, Tigger and Tilly. We are currently updating our website with all our new feline arrivals, you can read about some of them now – their photos will appear shortly. Please do visit the Sanctuary, open daily 10am – 4pm. New NHW schemes. I am very pleased to say that the latest NHW schemes which are being set up, Andrew Road, Charles Drive, King William Way, Gladstone Street and Albion Street, all have people willing to be NHW Coordinators. Many thanks, to all the new coordinators, and to everyone I have spoken to whilst setting up these schemes. I will be holding your welcome meeting very shortly and apologise to those people who have been waiting a little while, and are wondering what has been happening. Things have just taken a bit longer to set up, being the summer holidays. I am hoping that the members in Kitchener Road will also be attending the meeting. You should all see your signs going up by the end of September, or early October. If you need to need to contact me for any reason, my details are: Phone: 0116 2365745 or via email ansteynhw1@o2.co.uk

When you have finished with your bottles, please take them home with you. I don’t think you would like to be responsible for any friends or

relatives who play on that field to get injured by broken glass, or dog excrement whilst playing rugby. It is a full contact sport, and they spend a lot of time on the grass.

Apprentice of the year for John Merison (BMC) Ltd Even during tough times, there are still some things in life that make your job really worthwhile, especially when the commitment and professionalism of John Merison (Building Maintenance Contractors Ltd) shines at all levels. Our apprentice Mitch Williamson came to us looking for work and was set on as a labourer and very soon proved his worth. A high standard of work and an impressive work-rate showed that he was totally committed to following our company ethos. Mitch took an interest in plastering and was paired with one of our skilled plasterers as a labourer. His “have a go” approach showed that he not only had the right attitude, but also the right aptitude. After a while Mitch asked if he could train as a plasterer and after much deliberation it was agreed. JMBMC Ltd as “Investors In People” has always been committed to training its staff, so Mitch went to Leicester College. It soon became apparent to his tutors that Year One wasn’t going to be much of a challenge for Mitch proving the point for on the job vocational training. This year Mitch completed his apprenticeship winning both the Willmott Dixon award for "Achievement in Practical Work" and also Leicester College's “Craft Apprentice of the year” – His Manager Paul Garrigan stated, “Mitch is a person who is happy to undertake whatever is required of him and is always ready to assist any of our other tradespersons. He has set a standard for anyone wishing to work for John Merison in the future.” John Merison MD also added “A good news story is always welcome in this day and age, needless to say, we are all very proud. Well done Mitch”

Walton beaten by Anstey & Glenfield Sri Lankans’! Anstey and Glenfield cricket club this year hit by illness, retirements and defections pulled off one of the results of the season in division 2 of the Leicestershire senior league with a surprise 8 run win against unbeaten Walton Le Wold’s. In a rain affected game A&G batted first and scored just 100-7 off 36 overs. Anoop Jayaraj 46. A Kettle 3/18. Walton started confidently but good bowling from the Sri Lankan quartet of Chemilka Mewan 4/17, Sahan Tharanga 3/20, Nelusha Perera 2/11, and Jay Fernando 1/1. Saw a jubilant Anstey and Glenfield home by just 8 runs. B. Gohil 28 top scored for a despondent Walton. This still leaves Walton well clear at the top of Division 2 with Great Glen 2nd. and Anstey & Glenfield 3rd. with 1 game to play. Local councillor and Chairman of the club Cllr. John Sutherington, still recovering from a triple by-pass operation in May, had to go at the start of Walton’s innings to visit his Dad in hospital and missed all the excitement! John was chuffed to bits with the result, but glad he had to go early as the tension may just have been too much to bear. John said “Although I can’t play at the moment because of the operation, I still live every ball when I am watching and there would have been a few palpitations had I been able to stay I am sure” It is hoped that the club will be well placed next year when the “Pyramid system” finally starts in Leicestershire. It would be nice to get some of our defectors back to keep the club going forward. NEW JUNIORS 2014? We are also looking to start up a Junior section again in 2014 but like everything “Volunteers” are needed. Club help, Kit, good facilities and insurance are not a problem and some kids have shown an interest but without some willing “grown up’s” we are going to struggle. If you want to be part of the club and try to find the next Joe Root or Stuart Broad, give me a ring, you never know. 0116 2204643. 07939 070 603 or email:- john.sutherington@ntlworld.com

Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council “Lincoln” will be shown on Friday September 13th and lasts 150 minutes. Daniel Day-Lewis won a BAFTA for "Best Actor" in this magnificent film which follows our summer break. In 1865, President Lincoln struggled to bring to an end the American Civil War. At the same time, he was endeavouring to achieve the constitutional amendment which would ban slavery in the United States for ever. How did he achieve these nearly impossible tasks? "Les Misérables" will be shown on Friday October 11th and lasts 158 minutes. This epic musical drama film has great power. Anne Hathaway deserved her Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. Hugh Jackman won an Oscar nomination for his fearless portrayal of the convict Jean Valjean who only just survives starvation. We have to laugh at Helena Bonham Carter and Baron Cohen as Innkeeper and wife. Even if you have already seen this film, you'll still be entranced. “Hyde Park on Hudson” will be shown on Friday November 8th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Over £148k raised by Bradgate Lions since 1989 We have just completed our 24th. year during which we raised £4,600 to support mainly local charities and good causes. This brings the total funds raised since our foundation in 1989 to just over £148,000.00 most of which has gone to help charities in our local community. On July 1st. We are starting our 25th. year as a Lions Club, and our President Jill Townsend continues for a second term in office. This is unusual, as we usually change the President every twelve months. But Lion Jill feels that with one year in office already under her belt, she can provide us with the strong leadership needed to continue supporting our community!! And she hopes that under her guidance we can continue, as we have done in the past, to provide the help and service as we have done for the previous 24 years. With these aims in mind, and to help us achieve them, we should like to invite new members to join us. We are not just fund raisers, but as club members we enjoy an active social life as well, with pub meals, skittle matches, theatre visits etc: We meet twice a month, on the second Thursday evening, at Forest Hill Golf Club, Botcheston to discuss our business, and on the fourth at various venues for our social gatherings.

For further information about us, and about Lions clubs in general, give me, Roger, a call on 01530 242912. I will be pleased to help! CARPET & UPHOLSTERY CLEA Roger Gamble

You’re Next is a slick, intelligent horror film with images that will stick with you. The Davisons are a perfect family, gathered together to celebrate the anniversary of the parents. When their dinner is disrupted by a killing from outside, the family members are sent into a spiral of fear as a gang of masked killers invades their celebration, clearly intent on finishing them all off. What the killers are not prepared for is a guest of the family determined not to go quietly. You’re Next gives the ‘home invasion’ genre a classy and wholly creepy new twist.
