Welcome to the first, of what I hope will be many contributions to this Magazine as your Member of Parliament. Firstly, thank you very much for electing me as your MP on 7th May. Regardless of how you voted, I will always endeavor to assist you when you seek my help, and to work for the whole community - it has been an incredibly busy and active three months in the constituency and in Parliament since being elected, and it is a pleasure and privilege to serve the people of Birstall and the whole Charnwood constituency. Parliament has now started its summer break, but that doesn’t mean the work stops! The letters and casework still flow in, but the break in parliamentary business means more time to get around even more events and meetings back home here in Charnwood. So…..please do let me know if there are any community events you are organising over the summer that you’d like me to come to, or local community causes you feel I could support you with! While in future articles, I may give you more of a ‘View from the House’, on this occasion I want to be a little more local. Earlier in the summer I had the pleasure of spending the day at the Birstall Gala, a fantastic event organised by our Birstall Parish Councillors which brings the whole community together on a weekend, and a few weeks before that visited the Burley Houses summer tea party in Birstall. It reminded me just why Birstall is such a great example of what makes our part of the world so special – a thriving village with its own unique character and a real and genuine sense of community, with many local people giving up their own time to do their bit to make it even
better, organizing events, serving as councillors, supporting charities. It is all too often forgotten just how many people give up their time to bring our local communities together and make places like Birstall what they are – and they all deserve our thanks and gratitude. As your local MP, I will work with our community organisations, and all your local councillors, to ensure Birstall’s voice is heard loud and clear: be it in opposing over-development, working for improved community facilities where development does happen, and joining with the Parish Council in their work. If you feel that I can ever be of assistance to you as your MP, or if you want to invite me to a community event, please do feel to get in touch with me by emailing or by writing to me on the details above. In addition to my routine MP surgeries, over the course of the summer I am also holding a series of drop-ins/ local surgeries in each of the villages, hopefully including in the Village Hall in Birstall, to make it easier for you to come and see me and I will publicise this in due course. I look forward to meeting many of you in person over the coming months and years, and look forward to serving Birstall, and all of Charnwood constituency, as your voice in Parliament.
Edward Argar MP Member of Parliament for Charnwood

St James Church’s Annual Garden Party
Birstall’s Commemorative Clock The new commemorative clock, recently installed, was the brainchild of Councillor Ed Marshall. He felt that a clock would fill the circular concrete void on the front of the Council offices and also, in the centenary year of WWI, pay tribute to all who have lost their lives in the service of their country.
St James Church’s Annual Garden Party takes place on Monday 31st August from 2pm-4pm on the Church Lawn, Church Hill, Birstall. This year’s chosen charity to benefit is the Alzheimer’s Society, a cause which touches the lives of many people. There will be some new features at the garden party this year, particularly a number of fun competitions. Do you fancy yourself as a good photographer? Any subject or style will be acceptable, and as in all the events, there are three age groups: under10s, 11-17 years and 18+. You need to bring your photo entry to St James’ Church by 5pm on Friday 28th August for it to be judged by an independent expert. How about using your imagination to create a fancy dress to wear at the garden party? The only conditions for entry are that you must have made it yourself, and the judges must be able to recognise what it’s meant to be! Judging will take place during the afternoon and rosettes will be awarded for the best three in each age group. OR, who can make the best cake? All those TV programmes you’ve watched! All those mouthwatering cakes must have inspired you, so why not enter, either with small cakes (at least three) or full-size. They too will be judged on the afternoon, in the three age groups. Please bring your cakes to the church by 1pm on Monday 31st, labelled with your name and the name of the cake(s), so that rosettes can be awarded by an experienced cake-maker.
The Parish Councillors supported his idea and Smiths of Derby were selected to manufacture and install the timepiece and the project quickly became a community effort.
If you need to know more about any of these competitions, you can look up the ‘rules’ on the church website at www.Birstall.org or contact Vince on 07840 855030.
The Birstall History Society, celebrating their 30th year, donated the money to pay for the clock and the Birstall British Legion provided the RAL codes for the Legions colours of Gold and Blue for the clocks face. Birstall Parish Council paid for the preparatory work to allow the installation to go ahead.
Even if the weather is poor, the fete will take place in the Church building and teas will be served there all afternoon. There will also be stalls, games, music, ice-cream and much more, so put this date in your diary now!
Finally, a makeover was undertaken to the front of the Council Offices. Councillor Ed Marshall did the painting and our Estates Team supplied the hanging baskets and flowers.
From Beryl McHugh

The commemorative clock was installed with the inscription ‘Lest we forget’ on the dial. It seems to have captured the imagination of residents and has certainly precipitated many positive comments.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Birstall & Wanlip areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing
a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

More parents urged to take up free child care LEICESTERSHIRE families are being urged to find out if they qualify for free child care for their two-year-olds. The call comes as new figures published last week by Ofsted show that 66 per cent of county parents are taking advantage of the offer for two-yearolds – this compares to a national average of 58 per cent. Up to 570 hours of free child care are available for families if they meet certain criteria, and Leicestershire County Council is encouraging mums, dads and carers to use an online checker to see if they’re eligible. It’s thought that there are around 1,800 county youngsters who could benefit. The funding has been provided by the government and is designed to benefit low-income families and help parents return to work. The statistics also reveal that 94 per cent of three and four-year-oldsare using the free child care they’re entitled to, in line with the national figure. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Research shows that good quality child care gives youngsters the best possible start in life. “Although nearly two out of three parents are making the most of the funding, we want to increase this and are encouraging people to find out if they meet the criteria.” Parents of two-year-olds can find out if they qualify for by calling 0116 305 6208 or visiting: www.myearly learning.co.uk/ earlyyears/ apply

Great Central Railway Past, Present & Future A talk by Tom Ingall For the Friends of Charnwood Forest Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall on Monday 21st September at 7.30pm. Tom Ingall grew up in Leicestershire and now works for the B.B.C. in Yorkshire. He has been a volunteer at Great Central Railway for 25 years. The Great Central Railway opened in 1899, the last main line built in Britain. It was developed from earlier lines, notably the Midland, Sheffield & Lincolnshire (MS&L) irreverently known as Money Sunk and Lost! Between Leicester and Loughborough the GCR passed close to Charnwood Forest and encountered a landscape of particular beauty, including Bradgate, Swithland Reservoir and the tree covered south-eastern part of Charnwood. Our speaker will tell you much more! All are welcome. Members attend free. Visitors pay £3 including refreshments. Further information--Peter www.focf.org.uk

THE GREAT BIRSTALL
BAKE OFF
Great Birstall Bake off set for success in its Third Year Summer is in full swing and that only means one thing; it's time to dust off those baking tins, perfect your pastry, and prepare for the biggest Great Birstall Bake Off yet! After the unmitigated success of last year's competition, in which £1023.82 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support, the White Horse will host this year's event once again. And, if the popularity of 2014's Bake Off is anything to go by, then the day itself will be one to savour for a while. Beccy Kay, Founder of the White Horse’s Great Birstall Bake off commented “after the huge success of last years Bake off we are extremely excited about what the bakers of Birstall will offer us this year. We had incredible talent from both junior and adult entries and from people who had never baked before to those with more experience. Everyone who got involved either through baking or attending the coffee morning all had a wonderful time and ultimately we raised a superb amount of money (nearly double the previous year) for Macmillan. So please get your aprons on, even if you think you're 'not good enough' because it's a whole lot of fun and we want to make even more for a great cause this year!” Baking categories are set to include; Cupcake, Cake, Bread, Sweet Bake, Savoury Bake, Biscuit, Decoration and Under 16's. The judges were astounded by the variety in the 2014 Savoury category and are hoping for more of the same in 2015. Mr Allen of Allen's Family Bakery has once again very kindly agreed to donate yeast to any entrant wishing to bake bread. And with the event going from strength to strength, this year there'll be plenty of entertainment to ensure the day raises as much money as possible for an extremely worthwhile cause. So if the allure of some of Birstall's best cakes isn't enough, there'll be garden party games, face painting, a bouncy castle and live music all on Sunday 20th September at the Macmillan World's Biggest Coffee Morning at the White Horse. And with members of last year's judging panel back for more, the judging will be in qualified and knowledgeable hands. The judging panel will be following the WI guidelines which judge on characteristics such as texture, appearance and flavour. The entries will be judged on Saturday 19th September and will then be sold the following day at the Macmillan World's Biggest Coffee Morning at the White Horse, with the day kicking off at 11am and all proceeds being donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. The winners will be announced on the Sunday and each will receive a prize and a rosette. Applications can be obtained from Allen’s Family Bakers, the Birstall WI, the White Horse and the White Horse website. Application closing date is Wednesday 16th September. Meeting the needs of the local community
Help our Hedgehogs DO YOU have a fence around your property? Then how do the local hedgehogs come and go?
Since the Soar Valley Community Food Project opened on 1 September 2014 it has given out over 300 food parcels. The project, based in Rothley Baptist Church in the centre of Rothley, provides food to those in need as well as a signposting people to other assistance that might be available. We do this in a relaxed manner over a drink and biscuit. We are able to support people to a better future by helping them in the short term to put food on the table and to assist them find a way forward out of the crisis. Some of the examples of what we have been able to achieve are:• Chasing the council to complete vital repairs to a rental house that had been outstanding for over a year, •
Getting a young family’s gas reconnected to ensure heating in the depths of winter,
•
Supporting a family having major issues with neighbours,
•
Going to court with a family to help them avoid being evicted from their house,
•
Being able to provide food to individuals and families who have not eaten for several days.
In addition, the linked Soar Valley Community Money Advice Centre can offer advice on debt, benefit entitlement, cost-saving ideas and budgeting. Tim Jackson, Project Coordinator, commented “It has been fantastic to be able to help so many people over the past 10 months on their journey. Life can be a challenge for all of us at times and we feel privileged to support people when the need gets too great. We have an amazing team who work closely together to support all those who visit us. We are tremendously grateful to the local supermarkets and their customers who have donated food. When you shop please look out for the donation bins and donate non-perishable food. Also if you are connected with a school please consider making us the beneficiary of your harvest festival collection next term”
Now environmentalists are urging home-owners to cut several CDsized gaps in their fences to help hedgehogs get out and about a bit more - to find more food, and to find a mate. Hedgehog numbers have declined drastically in recent decades. The population is thought to be shrinking by three per cent a year. Hedgehogs are thought to need to cover about a mile a night, but they won’t get far if they can’t get in or out of your garden. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society estimates that from about 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s, we are now down to well below 1.5 million (the number estimated in the mid-Nineties).
The Soar Valley Community Food Project, which is jointly run by Rothley Parish Church and Rothley Baptist Church, is based at the Baptist Church, Woodgate, Rothley and is open Monday mornings from 11am to 1pm. It is open to anyone who needs help so please pop in for a coffee and see us, call/text 07743 765958 or email soarvalleycfp@gmail.org and start the journey to a better future.
If you would like to donate food, money or time please come and see us or call 07743 765958.
Calling all knitters! It’s time to join The Big Knit for Age UK
Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on nimble-fingered knitters in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to get creative and knit little hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit to help older people keep warm and well in winter. Now in its 12th year, The Big Knit returns and budding knitters across the UK are being called upon to knit miniature woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2016. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund their winter projects. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by the end of November latest to meet their challenging target of 42,000 and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go to make this a reality.
Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every eight minutes because of the cold. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to help older people keep warm and well in winter. Last year alone, more than 800,000 hats were lovingly created, with designs including a bird cage, fruit, soldiers, peas in a pod, a bee’s nest, a crown and fishermen with their catch. Peter Ralphs, Business Development Manager at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “The colder months of the year can be really tough for many older people who can face difficulties protecting themselves from the harsh winter weather, getting out and about and staying connected. That’s why it’s so important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter services. We need our knitters to create lots of miniature hats so we can keep helping older people in the local area.” For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or log on to http://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/how-you-can-help/new-fundraising-page/get-knitting-for-the-big-knit-2015/ Completed hats need to reach Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA by 30th November with drop off points are available.
