STEPHENS SIGNS ON . . . Birstall Golf Club’s new assistant professional Matt Stephens is preparing for a busy summer playing season in the best possible way – with a highly successful winter season. Matt, who lives in Glenfield, moved to represent Birstall last autumn, having spent the previous eight years at Kirby Muxloe. And since the move he has been in excellent form in the Leicestershire & Rutland Golf Alliance League, rarely finishing outside the top three in any of the weekly tournaments. As a result he is currently leading a tight battle at the top of the rankings with Matthew Cort (Rothley Park) and Craig Shave (Whetstone), with the three of them having broken well away from the remainder of the field: “I’m really encouraged with my performances since I came to Birstall. I had played the course previously in the County Open and the Mark Open on the Midlands PGA programme and enjoyed it, so I was delighted to be able to take up this opportunity”. For the summer he is aiming to play as many tournaments as possible, while also working in the Pro’s Shop at Birstall and coaching: “We do a lot of work with youngsters and I am looking forward to getting involved with that”. Like all golfers, his activities have been curtailed by the weather – several recent Alliance fixtures have been called off – which is hampering his preparations for 2014: “I am looking forward to it, but need to get much more intense practice in before the season starts, so I’m probably hoping for better weather more urgently than all the other golfers in the county!” When the Midlands PGA’s summer season gets started he expects to compete in many more tournaments, and is eyeing a place in the top 10 of the Order of Merit, which is assessed over six tournaments, one of which – The Mark Group Open – is staged at Birstall on Thursday 31st July and Friday 1st August.

On the Buses. Yet another consultation. Every time the Council wants to change a policy, it is required to ask for your views on the proposals. Is anyone listening and is it a done deal already ? There were 2 major consultations at the moment which have closed and the decisions are to be made soon. The first is about Loughborough Town centre and whether there should be a trial for 6 months having buses travel through the market place as at the moment or to ban all traffic. The new inner Relief Road and associated works will take away 95% of traffic anyway but your views and travel needs are important. Only about 1% of Loughborough residents took part in a scheme which has been described by some as a once in a lifetime chance of having a large area in the centre, traffic free. It would join Wards End to the Rushes. In another consultation, there are proposals for a new policy on Home to School Transport. The change is forced on Councils by the Government altering the status of schools and taking them out of local authority control. Whatever changes are made, the policy has to be clear and consistent and most importantly be equitable throughout the county. The council cannot have a policy which favours one school over another. It is a complicated problem to solve and each time the government changes how schools should evolve, it should link the transport policy to those changes but fails to do so.
Your Local is a monthly compilation of articles, press releases, events, general items of interest and news items submitted to us by local residents, groups, associations, sports clubs and local authorities.
As a result of a previous consultation, the Council brought the Concessionary Bus scheme in line with the government legislation. Did you know that the council has had its funding reduced again down to £4.3m and yet it costs £5.4m. Because it is a service required by law, money that might have gone to Adult services has to go to the shortfall for the bus costs.
The opinions expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the Your Local Production Team. The inclusion of any group or organisation in this publication does not necessarily imply a recommendation of its aims, methods or policies.
Whenever a consultation comes, please take part. It is important to hear views and listen to other solutions. Councillors are a lot easier to contact than MPs but it is your local MP who votes and makes changes. When was the last time you contacted your MP ?

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Birstall & Wanlip areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing
a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The day centre commenced life at Longslade College in 1991 then had a short spell in the Catholic Church then moved to its present location and was officially opened in 1993 by Sir Roy Griffiths. THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY Monday 10th March was an “action packed” event for the Club commencing with the long awaited 2nd talk given by Mr Brian Kibble on the life and times of Anstey from the “1800s to the present day”. Once again we were treated to extensive information supported by beautifully preserved photographs of long gone shops, factories and buildings but of which a few had retained their recognisable exteriors. Anstey had always been a hub of small diverse industries which have blossomed into major companies covering Tannery, Dairy products, Brewery and famous Wall Paper creations. Many of the photographs provoked memories from the Membership as they gradually came up to date. This talk was followed by a Free Raffle consisting of a box of Marks and Spencers Guest Soaps, which was won by Mrs. Diane Rouse . We then celebrated the 60th Diamond Wedding Anniversary for Mr and Mrs. Silvester (Madge and Dennis). Madge had brought along two beautifully cooked and decorated sponge cakes, one in vanilla and the other Chocolate which were very quickly and gratefully consumed!! Sincere Congratulations to you both. Lastly a very appreciative presentation of Gardening Vouchers were given to Mr David Rouse and Mr Mick Whatton who have, over the last ten years, been the “stage hands” supporting the Monday Club and their wives Diane (Catering) and Diana (Sales table)

Bradgate View, a new 5 star luxury cat hotel, will be opening in Thurcaston in April 2014. Proprietors Julie and Nicola are lifelong cat lovers, both getting their first kittens when they were very young. They now have two Siamese, Olli, a laid back lilac point and Luna, a lively blue point. "They are adorable and they have us twisted around their little toes." We understand how besotted cat lovers can be with their cats. It is very difficult to leave your precious pets when you go away, so much so that some people don't go on holiday at all. The worry about whether they are comfortable, warm and safe is so great it can spoil your holiday. We know that feeling, we have been there ourselves. We want to provide our guests with a clean, safe and comfortable environment. Somewhere we would be happy to leave Olli and Luna. We have had our cat hotel designed for us to our specifications. It is a small, exclusive hotel where guests get lots of care and attention. There are six suites in total, four doubles and two family suites. For larger families we have interconnecting suites with room for six. Each suite is individually decorated with bright, colourful pictures of our beautiful Charnwood parks and woodlands. For example "The Swithland suite." One thing we really want our guests to enjoy is a warm and cosy bedroom. Older, frail cats and certain breeds, such as Sphynx, need to be kept warm. Because of this we have invested in thermostatically controlled heating which we can adjust to meet our guests needs. Everything we provide, from the cosy beds and blankets, to the stimulating toys and activity centres, are chosen with the comfort and happiness of our guests in mind. We feel confident that anyone who visits Bradgate View will be very happy for their cats to stay with us. If anyone has any questions or would like to come and see us, please call Julie and Nicola on 0788 022 3241 or visit our website for more information and photos. www.bradgateview.co.uk

Re-Live The Final Days Of King Richard III With New Audio Tour Of Key Locations In Leicester and Leicestershire A new audio tour has been developed to help visitors re-live the story of King Richard III’s final days in Leicester and Leicestershire. The launch of this new tour follows the discovery of the remains of King Richard III - the last Plantagenet King of England - in Leicester, announced by the University of Leicester, Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society in February 2013. The audio tour tells the story of King Richard III’s life and death in Leicester and Leicestershire through a number of fictional characters. It features key locations throughout the city and county including Bow Bridge, Greyfriars, the former site of the Blue Boar Inn, The Newarke, Ambion Hill, Kirby Muxloe Castle, Bradgate Park, Bosworth Battlefield and Donington le Heath. The tour is free to download onto smartphones and tablet devices via iTunes or by using QR codes on the new King Richard III interpretation panels across the city, at Bosworth, Donington le Heath and Kirby Muxloe Castle, online at www.visitleicester.info, www.storyofleicester.com, www.goleicestershire.com and websites for Bosworth Battlefield, Donington le Heath, Bradgate Park and Kirby Muxloe Castle, as well as from the Visit Leicester centre in Leicester. Funded by Arts Council England, this audio tour has been produced as part of the Unlocking Leicestershire museum project by Leicester Shire Promotions, in partnership with Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council. Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicester Shire Promotions said: “The discovery of the King’s remains in Leicester has significantly boosted the public’s interest in this dramatic story and over 150,000 people have visited the temporary exhibition in the city during 2013. The new audio tour gives a unique perspective on the fascinating story of his final days

including the Battle of Bosworth at which he met his fate.” City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “The story of Richard III’s life, death and subsequent rediscovery is an extraordinary one that deserves to be shared with the largest possible audience. “This new audio tour is a great way for people to find out about a fascinating period in Leicester’s history by encouraging them to visit the city and county landmarks that help bring Richard’s story to life.” Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet member for culture, said: “There’s always been a compelling story to tell at Bosworth and the audio tour I’m sure will enhance the experience for visitors to our battlefield heritage centre.” A new £4 million Richard III Visitor Centre is scheduled to open later in 2014. The centre will house a breathtaking new exhibition, entitled ‘Richard III: Dynasty, Death and Discovery' which will guide visitors through the dramatic story of the king's life, brutal death at Bosworth Field in 1485 and the fascinating story of his rediscovery.

Building in Rothley Causes Unrest The concept of ‘green belts’ is to prevent urban sprawl into the surrounding countryside. Leicester Marathon returns for 2014 with an emphasis on raising money for local charities. The date for 2014’s Leicester Marathon has been officially confirmed this week by the organising team. The event will take place on Sunday 26th October, and will start from Victoria Park at 9.15am. After the success of combining multiple running events in previous year, the 2014 event will provide opportunities for all ages and ability of runner. There will be a full 26.2 mile marathon as well as a half marathon, relay races and a fun run. The organisers want to encourage everybody to get involved as either a runner or spectator. Last year, 2,500 runners took place in the city centre event, raising an estimated total of £70,000 for charities. This year’s event will focus on raising as much money as possible for the race’s partners, so runners are being actively encouraged to participate as part of a charity team. Participating charity runners will be able to take part for free. LOROS, Bamboozle Theatre Company and St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice are amongst the charities taking part and asking runners to raise money for their charity in return for a place. The charities will be hosting designated cheering points along the route where spectators supporting charity runners will congregate, giving runners that much needed boost during their run.
“We really appreciate the support of those giving up their time and raising money for the race’s charity partners,” comments race director Christian Weikert-Picker, “This year’s event is designed to get all sorts of people involved, raise awareness of the work of such important charities, and encourage people to get active and to get fundraising.” ANING SERVICE
This is to protect natural environments, improve air quality within urban areas, provide a contiguous habitat for wildlife, plants and animals, and ensure that urban dwellers have access to the countryside, with consequent educational and recreational opportunities. Most important of all, green belts are supposed to be there to protect the unique character of rural communities, which attracts tourism. Tourism brings business, business bring jobs. Although everyone has heard this ‘green belt’ cliché expression do they really exist in Loughborough and Charnwood? Where are they? Actually, looking into the internet, there is a map showing Green Belts in the UK. You can find it on - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/greenpolitics/planning/9708387/ Interactive-map-Englands-green-belt.html Interestingly, this map does not show any green belt in Leicestershire, and of course does not include Loughborough and Charnwood. Why not ? Many residents in Charnwood recoil in horror watching the random, almost anarchical, transformation of rural, agricultural land into housing estates. This has a catastrophic effect on the character of Charnwood and the situation is getting worse. Rothley is particularly badly affected and local residents feel betrayed. If the Council has a solid plan for development across the A6/A46 corridor, why does this occur ? Does the ‘Core strategy’ for future developments in Charnwood include the concept of ‘green belts’? Yet another planning application for a new housing estate in West Cross Lane, which is expanding Mountsorrel into the green space between it and Rothley has overstepped the mark. The Charnwood Conservative Association (CCA) has made a short videoreportage on the most serious issues in Rothley and the response was revealing. You can watch it in the Charnwoodconservatives website: https://charnwoodconservatives-admin.conservativewebsites.org.uk/ or directly in youtube at the following address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA-hfOKvdWs&feature=youtu.be We are told the Council has a plan in accord with the Core Strategy but it is not clear what direct recommendations have been made in ‘green belt’ terms for areas in Loughborough and Charnwood and they certainly do not seem to apply around Rothley. The CCA will gladly collaborate and form a proposal for the ‘green belt’ areas in Charnwood. Please, send us feedback to the following e-mail: leon.hadji.nikolaou@gmail.com

White Horse Duck Race’s 6th Year supports Birstall Parks Youth Café Birstall, Bank Holiday Monday 5th May will be the 6th annual White Horse Duck race, and is set to be the most exciting yet! Over the previous 5 years the White Horse duck race has raised over £16,000 pounds for local charities and this year there will be even more entertainment to make it a great family day out.
Birstall
“Through supporting different charities over the years, each one has brought something new to the Duck Race, helping it to grow into what is now a firmly established date in the Birstall social Calendar.” Said Charlotte Foy of the White Horse
Mini Dribblers
This year The White Horse will host the charity event for the Birstall Park Youth Café. The Café was set up 6 years ago by Birstall Parish Council when a need for a meeting place for young people became apparent. It is seen as a unique initiative which has become a model for other Parishes. “I was overjoyed when we learned that Birstall Youth Café had been chosen to be the beneficiary of this year’s Duck Race, I couldn’t wait to tell the Youth Workers, because I knew how much this would mean to them. It will also mean a lot to the young people of Birstall, that use the Youth Café and to promote the fact that this facility is there”. Said Sue Coulson – Deputy Clerk to the Birstall Parish Council The Youth Café is held on a Wednesday evening for 8-11 year olds and Fridays for 12-19 year olds and is attended by as many as 60 young people. “It is a real plus to Birstall, bringing young people together from all parts of the village and giving them a place where they can learn new skills in a fun environment” Said Sue. The White Horse Team are looking forward to working directly with the young people who attend the Youth Café to get them involved with all areas of the organization of the day. “We are looking forward to hearing the young peoples thoughts about new fund raising ideas and getting inspiration from them about fresh ways of spreading awareness of the event” Said Charlotte Foy. Sue Coulson responded “Not only will it enable the young people to get involved with their community, but also to be part of fund raising for their own activities, and for them to see what a wonderful and rewarding thing it is for them to be doing. I’m sure that the young people and their parents will get behind this fantastic community event, by raising awareness of the event and for ‘getting stuck in’ on the day. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the organisers for choosing the Youth Café and to offer our assistance in any way that we can”. On May 5th the stalls and games will begin at 12 noon, and the duck race will start at 2pm. Other attractions for the day are; Bouncy castle, Teddy tombola, stocks, hook a duck, raffle, mini duck race, Duck Derby, Boat rides, cake stall, tuck shop, BBQ and much more to be announced. Ducks will be available from April 1st from the Youth Cafe and of course the White Horse, Birstall. There are cash prizes to be won of £100, £50, £25 and many other prizes kindly donated by local business’s. Ducks can also be bought on the day of the event so come on down and join in the fun!

Prudential Ride London Cycling Event Alex’s Wish charity based in Rothley has been allocated 26 places for this year’s Prudential Ride London on Sunday, 10th August. Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic Games, the event starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the Games, it’s a truly spectacular event for all involved.
The 23rd April, as all good English men and women will know, is St George’s Day, the national day of the English. At this time the Leicester Branch of the Royal Society of St George is holding its annual banquet at Devonshire Place in Leicester, when all good English folk drink a toast to the Queen and to “Englishness”. The banquet will be held on Saturday 19th April and is one of three annual events organised by the branch, the other two being a similar banquet held on or near Trafalgar Day in October and a Carol Service just before Christmas.
