My ten-month-old was sitting in her high chair, twisting and moving all over the place. My wife said to me, “Straighten her up.” I looked at my daughter and said, “What are you doing with your life? Do you want to be this way forever? It’s time to grow up.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Birstall & Wanlip areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing

a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Callout for library Hormone that proves volunteers you really do love your dog like a member of the family

We are getting closer to knowing when the handover date for Rothley Library will take place. The date for the first meetings for volunteers has now been set – they will take place on Wednesday, 8th July, either from 9.30-10.30am or from 7-8pm, both at the Rothley Centre. If you are interested, please contact us on volunteers@rothleycommunitylibrary.co.uk, or in the box in the Post Office.

News about the competition for local adults and children to design a logo and signs for the library will be coming out soon, and there will be a quiz for children too.

For up-to-date information, go to our Facebook page or visit www.rothleycommunitylibrary.co.uk

Are you new to the area? Interested in making new friends? Thought of joining a women’s group? Well The Mountsorrel Townswomen’s Guild, may be just for you! We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 7.30pm, In the Parish Rooms, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel. We have a very interesting and varied programmer of speakers over the next few months to suit all tastes Do come along, you will be made most welcome. On the 21st May Julie Ede makes her second visit to us with The Wonderful Wicked Wily Wallace Simpson On June 4th Sandie Leong again making a second visit her talk Entitled Mad as a Hatter

Why not give us a try.

IF YOU HAVE ever gazed into your beloved dog’s eyes and felt that you found love there, you were right. Now a hormone has been found that indicates that we love our pets in the same way as we love our children – and the feeling is mutual: our pets love us back in the same way. Researchers have found that the levels of the hormone oxytocin increase in both human and canine brains when a dog is gazing at its owner. Oxytocin is already known to play a strong part in triggering that feeling of unconditional love and protection that a parent and child enjoy. Scientists believe that oxytocin may create a ‘neural feedback loop’ that has strengthened the bond between humans and dog for centuries. “They became attuned to our social cues in the way that young children are.… When dogs are presented with an impossible task they quickly turn to humans to see what to do, just like children do. Wolves don’t do that, even when raised in captivity.” The study was published in the journal Science.

Do You Know Your Blood Pressure Garden Centre customers at Wyevale Garden Centre at Rothley were given free blood pressure checks thanks to The Rotary Club of the Soar Valley. The club was one of over 300 across the country to team up with the Stroke Association for Know Your Blood Pressure checks. We tested 54 people during the day, 12 were referred to consult their doctor and 2 were classed as urgent. The Rotary Club is grateful to Wyevale Garden Centre for allowing us to use their premises for this very worthwhile community project.

Church to help people become savvy with their cash as households feel income squeeze A church is set to run three free sessions to help people in Mountsorrel get on top of their household finances. Members of St James in Birstall wanted to help their local community to best handle the economic climate so underwent specialised training from UK charity Christians Against Poverty and are now offering this opportunity to other communities in the Soar Valley. Now they are offering the short course aimed to putting the joy back into money by teaching people how to chart their household income and take control of their expenditure. Money coach Gill Chester, who will be leading the sessions called the CAP Money course, said: “With households feeling the squeeze on their disposable income, we’ve all got to get a bit more savvy about our money to get through these tough times. If you know how to save and budget effectively, it can have a hugely positive impact on the whole family.” St James is one of more than 1,000 churches of different Christian traditions across the UK who are regularly offering the course, as they work together to positively impact the communities around them. The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. She added: “We hope that we can help people, quietly and confidentially, take control rather than relying on guess work so they can plan for the future and weather the storm.” The first course takes place in the Bower Room, Christ Church, Rothley Road, LE12 7JU starting at 7.30pm on June 3rd. FILMREVIEW Pitch Perfect 2

After their huge success at the national competition, the Bellas are back at Barden University, ready to take on the world of a capella again. They take their chances in entering a huge international competition that no American team has ever won. With the odds so stacked against them, they come to realise how valuable Beca’s creativity is, and how much they value each other as a group as they edge further towards the end of their time at Barton. As a follow-up to the hugely successful 2012 hit, Pitch Perfect 2 sees everyone’s favourite songstresses back doing what they do best. With returning cast members Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine and Brittany Snow, the film also welcomes back Elizabeth Banks, who not only features on-screen, but has also stepped up to the role of director. This sequel promises to deliver as much fine-tuned fun as its predecessor. Pitch Perfect 2 is a real treat for fans and newcomers alike, and is not to be missed.

Mad Max: Fury Road The Mad Max franchise makes a dramatic return to our screens thirty years after the last film, Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome. Tom Hardy stars as Max Rockatansky, the action man who makes his own way in a postapocalyptic desert land. Water and fuel shortages are plaguing the world, and the people left alive have succumbed to a do-or-die mentality, and morale is totally broken. Fans of the franchise can expect all the fast-paced explosive action that made the first three films so popular, and British star Tom Hardy breathes new life into the role formerly played by Mel Gibson. Mad Max: Fury Road comes courtesy of George Miller, who has directed all the previous films in the series, so this exciting epic will seem both familiar and different, appealing to old and new fans alike.

RSPCA Please support our fundraising events. The Leicestershire branch of the RSPCA are organising a number of fund raising events during the Summer. On Saturday the 13th of June they are holding another of their popular Car Boot Sales at the Woodside Animal Centre on Scudamore Road Leicester from 11am to 3pm. There are a limited number of spaces so it is wise to check with Jade on 232 4932 –office hours or Ken on 220 7552 to book or for further information. They are also holding an open garden from 10am to 4pm at 44 Triumph Road, Glenfield on Sunday in the 19th of July in aid of the Animal Centre. Refreshments are also available with RSPCA goods for sale, a plant stall and a tombola. There is also garden trail for children to enjoy. So please come along to these fund raisers. The Centre deals with around three thousand neglected, abandoned and neglected animals every year and desperately need your support.

Rothley group in next stage to keep the village library open. We’re delighted to report that Rothley Community Library has moved onto the next phase towards becoming a community library, so that it will remain open. The County Council has reviewed all the business plans from libraries across Leicestershire, and has placed them into two categories: those whose business plans will progress into a transition phase and those that need further work developing their plans. The group will now be working closely with Paul Love from Communities and Wellbeing Services, along with Kristy Ball from the same department, who has already been helping to develop the plans. The library will be staffed by volunteers, but the services of free library loans from the county’s book stock, wifi and computer use and photocopying facilities will continue to be available. The group is now developing an agreed transition phase with clear steps, milestones and timelines for Rothley Community Library and the County Council in the transfer of the library. The group will also continue to work very closely with Voluntary Action Leicestershire, whose support has been crucial. The Parish Council has offered a generous contribution to costs, and a group of people has gathered who are giving their time on a committee, which is organising the many arrangements necessary. “It is my privilege to be working with all these supportive residents in order to achieve what this village deserves - a community library which we can feel proud to call our own,” said Steve Mitchell, a parish councillor and chair of the library committee. Many local people, including children and young people, have been asked what they would like from the library service, and all their ideas will be considered. Many have also offered to help, and the group is still looking for ideas and offers of help and sponsorship from local people and businesses. In the next few months a volunteers’ meeting will be held to establish a working team. When plans are fully established, the library will reopen as a community library by next February at the latest, after a month’s closure while minor alterations will be made to the building. The committee and the county council are however hoping for a date this autumn, if the timescale can be met. The opening hours will remain a minimum of sixteen as they are now, although there may be minor adjustments within those hours to accommodate changes that come as a result of consultations. Rothley Community Library has a website, www.rothleycommunitylibrary.co.uk, and a Facebook page, and information is updated regularly. The group can be contacted through the website and Facebook, or by letter in the box in the Post Office.

The “Woods” Coach left Cropston at 8.45am and went on to Rothley for a 9.00am start for a wonderful trip to Ludlow, in Shropshire. We were blessed with sunshine and a temperature worthy of a good Summer’s day which lasted for the entire time. We travelled through some beautiful Countryside in a well-appointed Coach.

On arrival in Ludlow, the Membership broke up to wander through the various streets lined with a mixture of different century buildings from Norman through to predominately 15th Century, shadowed by the once magnificent Ludlow Castle constructed in the late 11th Century, as a border stronghold. It was enlarged into a Royal Palace in the 14th Century and later under the ownership of Richard, Duke of York, was involved in the Wars of the Roses. Edward 1V at one time sent the Prince of Wales and his brother (famous brothers in the Tower of London) to live in the Castle which was also the seat of government for Wales and the Border Counties.

At one point they cited the famous “Mr. Underhill’s” Hotel, a Michelin starred Restaurant. Speculation was that Lunchtime would cost in the region of £200!!

Subsequently Prince Arthur the elder brother of Henry Vlll honeymooned with his wife Catherine of Aragon, before his early death. From 1525 to 1528 Queen Mary (known as “Bloody Mary”) spent three winters at Ludlow. Since 1811 the Castle has been privately owned by the Earls of Powys but open to the Public most days. However, the Castle was unfortunately closed for our inspection, but we learnt of its long history which was evident from its mixed architecture – Norman, Medieval and Tudor buildings, many of which still stand!
