BIRSTALL AIM FOR EURO GLORY
and Steve Sansome a 68 to haul back the difference, and Chris Webb producing a crucial par on the last hole to snatch the title.
VACANT ALLOTMENT PLOTS IN BIRSTALL AVAILABLE NOW!!!
All three were delighted and relieved at the conclusion. Sansome said they still fancied their chances after the first round:
Birstall Parish Council currently have Lane vacant plots on their Meadow site and the Greengate Lane site.
Birstall Golf Club is celebrating winning the title of England’s champion club, and is gearing up to represent England in the European finals, being staged in Cyprus, in late October. The club’s team of three – Chris Webb, Jack Merry and Steve Sansome – won the title against teams representing over 30 other counties at the finals at Brancepeth Castle, County Durham. Keith Marston, the club’s president, said: “This is the biggest honour for Birstall Golf Club it its 114 year history. Everyone is very proud of the team. Being there when they clinched the title was a very special and emotional experience. “It is a fantastic achievement. Birstall is much smaller than many of the clubs we faced in the final. It is a tribute to the quality of our course and the strength of our players – especially our outstanding Junior section”. Birstall qualified for the competition by winning the Corah Shield, Leicestershire’s inter-club competition – the 9th time in 25 years the club has won that event, which highlights its outstanding consistency. In the final the team finished on eleven over par after the two rounds, tied with overnight leaders City of Newcastle, but won the title on ‘count-back’. They staged an impressive second day come back, making up nine shots on Newcastle, with Jack Merry scoring a three under par 67
“We still felt we had a good chance if we played well. We knew we had a good team – but there were a lot of good teams there. We’re really thrilled and delighted”. Jack Merry, who came second in the individual competition, is already looking forward to the European final: “I have never played competitively overseas, so it will be fantastic to go to Cyprus”. The most relieved member of the three was Webb, who feared he might cost the team victory when he scored 79 on the second day. He and the team had a long wait between that putt and victory being confirmed: “I had the biggest sigh of relief when we found out we had actually won. It was a very long 45 minutes and I didn’t dare look at the scoreboard. It is a bit of a dream to be honest. Winning competitions like this is the sort of thing you dream of when you start playing”.
a resident of Birstall or If you are Wanlip, you could have an immediate start for producing delicious and healthy fruit vegetables at a relatively low cost for your family.
New allotment holders find that they quickly develop new skills and knowledge and many plot holders see the development of their allotment as part of a positive lifestyle choice. They are also a good way to make friends with people who share your interest in gardening. They are a great way to relax and unwind from the stresses of modern living and provide an excellent form of exercise for people of all ages and abilities. If you are interested, please telephone the Parish Council on 0116 267 6191 or email: accounts@birstallpc.org.uk to arrange a viewing of one of the vacant plots for an immediate start.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Birstall & Wanlip areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing
a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THE GREAT BIRSTALL
BAKE OFF
The flour dusting has settled on 2015's Great Birstall Bake Off, and with nearly 50 entries it was bigger and (the odd soggy bottom aside) more successful than ever. All categories were superbly supported, with both genders and all ages competing for the most prestigious prize in Birstall's bakery calendar. Brownies and cheesecakes aplenty, the judging panel were astounded by the selection; in particular the ‘Cake’ category which was of a higher standard than ever before. And an exceptional mention must go to the Under 16's category who mustered more prizes than ever before. But the Bake off competition was only the start, with all the entries being sold to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Supports world largest coffee morning. The cakes were sold on the morning of Sunday 20th September in the resplendent garden of the White Horse in Birstall; the weather was fair, the crowds flocked, and the coffee and cake flew out in record time to beat last year's total. So far ÂŁ1061.05 was raised- a truly staggering figure. If you missed the coffee morning but would still like to give money to Macmillan you can use the White Horse’s text to donate code. To donate ÂŁ5 to Macmillan text CUP 6ED to 70550.
Paul Fish - Winner of ‘Best Cake’
The carthorse themed raffle stand was also a grand success and bunting helped to create a wonderfully rustic British village aesthetic, with several people going home with a prize or two. This year, activities for the Children and some Sunday morning Jazz were added to the event which added to the ambience and fun of the day. Our thanks go to the following for their exceptionally kind contributions and donations; Amy Harrison - Graphic Designer, Kaines Castles, Hannahs, Glenwood's, CafÊ on the Corner, North's Delicatessen, Stonehurst Farm, Little Red Deli, Birstall Garden Centre, Aroma Spice, Platform CafÊ, Dance Academy, Tesco, Co-Op, Greenacres, Wilkinson's, Brakes, Trust Inns, Matthew Clark and to Nick Loach for the £53 added for the Sunday evening quiz held on the same day. Special thanks also to the judging panel, Allen’s Family Bakery, Sandra, Loney, Donna Berry, Mary Goodman, Margaret Hoskins from the WI, Past winners Philip Poole, Jacqueline Abela, and Ian Brummell, thanks to to Lisa Gant Lastly, a huge thank you to everybody who took part, those who generously donated their baking and to everyone who came on the day. Watch this space for details of 2016's Great Birstall Bake Off, but until then - keep baking!

Trick or Treat Safely and Responsibly This Halloween
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE! Can you spot the ten differences in our two picture?
Remember not everybody enjoys Halloween, for some people it is a scary time of year. If you do not wish for trick or treaters to call you can download a poster from the Leicestershire Police website at https://leics.police.uk/information-and-advice/library/posters#.VCvEhr6dz8u. If you don’t mind trick or treaters there is also a ‘Welcome Here’ poster also available at the same website.
NO THANKS Trick or treaters Please DON’T knock on this door as we do not wish to take part.
Trick or treaters Welcome here in conjunction with Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Anti-Social Behaviour Delivery Group

Trick or treat... Out and about... •
Make sure young children are always accompanied by an adult.
•
If children are going out unaccompanied make sure that they know to:
-
Keep to well-lit areas, wear reflective clothing and carry a torch
-
Use the green cross code when crossing the street
-
Never talk to strangers who approach them
-
If they are approached by strangers go directly home to tell their parents or into a local shop and ask for help
-
Respect peoples choice to open or not open the door
-
Ensure that any ‘tricks’ do not damage people’s property.
At home
• Consider displaying a ‘no trick or treaters’ poster if you don’t want people knocking at your door.

THE MONDAY CLUB
ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY On a somewhat disappointingly cold and wet afternoon, on Monday 14th September, a sizeable number of members and visitors came into the warm with their goodies for sale for our Harvest Bring and Buy tables. There were some mouth-watering pastry offerings, together with jams and cakes and, fresh from the garden, appeared a variety of fruit and vegetables enticingly displayed in various baskets etc.
Team Anstey Amblers and Runners
However, before we set about selling the produce we decided to relax and enjoy our speaker Mr. Andrew Parsons, telling us about “Farming with Wildlife”, he informed us that “Acorn Farm” in Sutton on Trent had belonged to his family since his Grandfather had come as a child in the 1880s and who was brought up by an Aunt and Uncle who lived in the village. He then married a local girl in 1912 and was tenant of “Woodbine Farm” containing 30 acres. The farm grew in size, as well as the family consisting of seven children. By the mid-1950s Andrew’s father and his Uncle went into partnership, but unfortunately this broke down and the farm was split up. However, in due time the size of the farm increased back to its original size and flourished with acres of ground supporting both considerable herds of cattle and flocks of sheep. Further acreage lent itself to arable farming and in this state care and attention was given to the access and support of various wild birds, animals and insects by careful planning of the working of the fields and hedgerows.
We continue to grow with members of all abilities and ages, runners and walkers. Is a Running/Walking Club for you? If you are tempted to join our club, but not sure whether a running/walking club is for you don’t worry! Our club is for everyone. Our current members include: Athletic Types – Some of our members have always been athletic but for whatever reason have stopped playing football/rugby etc., but still want to remain active.
Andrew is the 3rd generation and now works part-time Managing Acorn Farm Visits, as well as running a successful photographic business. During his talk we were delighted to witness a vast number of his photographic work displaying well known birds and animals together with quite a few lesser known; all in perfectly natural settings. There was a very appreciative response from his audience with oohs and aarhs and laughter. A truly delightful talk. In keeping with the happy atmosphere, we then listened to a delightful poem “written and spoken with a Yorkshire accent!!!” by our resident Poet, Mrs. Margaret Hooper “The Monday Club – for the Brave!!”………………a real knock out!!!
Families - We welcome families along with children aged 12-18. Due to insurance the children have to be accompanied by an adult so what better way to get the kids active and yourself too.
Finally we achieved a very successful selling of the produce and this was followed by tea and cakes. The yummy cakes were supplied this month by Mrs Heather Tighe and Mrs. Maja Tompkins all of which disappeared without difficulty and brought about the end of a very lovely afternoon!
Retired – We have quite a few retired members who are keen to stay active and are really enjoying the running and the social aspect of the club
Our next Meeting will be on 12th October at 2.15pm when we shall once again welcome our old friend Mr. Derek Holloway – this time “Introducing Charles Darwin”. He will undoubtedly deliver a fascinating subject in his own riveting style.
And many people that just need a little bit of support and enjoy the company. All new members say how friendly everyone is within the club, and how welcome they’ve felt joining the club. It’s daunting for most people to try something new, so please talk to us if you’d like to come along.
