Memorable Memorial Day
NEWS FROM THE CHURCHES
On the first Sunday of August St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club, held its annual 'Memorial Day' tournament. This is an all day affair dedicated to the memory of bowlers who gave so much to the club but who are no longer with us. Teams of three are drawn out of a hat giving several short games against opposing teams.
Summer is marching on and heading, inexorably, to autumn and the dark days of winter. In its short season, we have to 'cram' so much in, both in our private and family lives and in the life of our church. At the beginning of summer, John Borrajo's brave cycle ride to North Devon has resulted in the grand sum of £827.00. Amazing - it really kick-started the season!
By the lunch break, a delicious ploughman's, it was apparent there would be a scramble for the trophy with three teams in strong contention. The afternoon matches were all very close so that in the end only single points separated the first three positions. The event was rounded off with tea, a sumptuous selection of home made cakes. The team which eventually came out on top were, Peter Cowham, Jan Beasley and Alan Batson here pictured with the trophy. Competitors and spectatators commented on how closely fought and entertaining the competition had been. Glorious weather added to the atmosphere of this memorable Memorial Day.

Local girl Paige Birkin presents £500 cheque to PASIC On 12th July we held a fundraising event that took place at Birstall Social Club and as we raised so much more than we expected we decided we would like to donate £500 to PASIC. An amazing charity who are based on the Children's Oncology Ward at the LRI. They support children with cancer and their families providing much needed days out and fun activities. Paige was very happy to give Maria the cheque.
We have the annual Summer Fayre on 26th August at St. James and this year will also see a Flower Festival at Our Lady and St. Nicholas in Wanlip. In both of our churches we have very gifted and professional flower arranging teams. They are always willing to receive requests for flower arrangements to celebrate or remember your own special occasions. You can contact Sylvia Simes on 2674206 (email: sylviasimes@talktalk.net [for Birstall]) or Marjorie Bonshor (for Wanlip) on 2207964. They will be very happy to talk to you. Wanlip Church and Community Hall is, of course, home to 'Old Nick's Coffee Shop' on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. It is especially attractive in the summer months with some outside seating. One of the seats proved 'especially attractive' to a swarm of bees earlier this summer, but they were collected and re-homed, to continue their useful busy lives in more appropriate surroundings. In St. James church we have had a service planned by the members of the Mother's Union and focussing on modern-day slavery. The fact that it occurs is appalling, and the statistics of how many people are enslaved are mind-blowing. We were informed that there are more than 136,000 in the U.K. alone, and that is probably just a 'guesstimate'. We remembered Rasselas Morjan, a rescued Abyssinian slave who became a Christian, and who is now buried in Wanlip churchyard, on the 180th anniversary of his death, aged 19, on 25th August 1839. To find out more about the Mother's Union, please contact Helen Tarry on 0116 2677493. They meet on the 4th Monday of every month at 10.15 a.m. (and no, you don't have to be a mother!)

Charnwood’s 'Big Switch' offers energy bill savings Residents in Charnwood are being offered the chance to sign up to the ‘Big Switch’ with the possibility of saving more than £240 a year on energy bills. The borough council has launched the Charnwood Big Switch, a collective switching scheme to help residents change energy suppliers with ease and get a better deal. Cllr Paul Mercer, lead member for housing said: “The Council is committed to helping residents and this scheme could help them get a better deal on their energy bills. Switching suppliers can be daunting even though they may be paying too much for their energy. “By joining the collective switching scheme residents will be able to switch suppliers with ease and save money on their bills.
The Charnwood Gardener
A Wild Controversy
Gardeners like to think that once they've pulled on their wellies, slipped out of the back door and firmly ensconced themselves in the potting shed they're free from the maddening din of the modern world. 'No divisive rhetoric or political polarisation out here!' they sigh happily, sipping on tea Friend or foe? and potting on the biennials. But deep down they know – there is an ancient ideological war raging across the land, one which cares not for hedge lines or allotment boundaries. And it is this: Where do you stand when it comes to wildlife? On the face of it, this may not seem a cause for debate. We all love robins. We adore butterflies. We welcome bees and other pollinators. These are our friends! But what about those more destructive forces? Badgers and bunnies. Cockshafers and cutworms. Leaf miners and leatherjackets. Where do you draw the line? Can you justify feeding the sparrows but chasing off the magpies?
“I would encourage people to register with the scheme because they can then see whether they are getting a better deal before deciding to switch.
Like in any conflict, there are the extremists. On one side, the militants - those who will employ a dizzying arsenal of chemical and biological weapons to leave their plot as lifeless as the surface of the moon. On the other, the pacifists – gentle souls who will wistfully watch their Delphiniums be chewed to oblivion and shrug off the widening trenches in their lawn. Both sides eye each other suspiciously, shaking their heads.
“The scheme also provides an opportunity to encourage energy efficiency and help to reduce the number of households in fuel poverty.”
There are no easy answers here, but perhaps like most of the world's problems a little discourse would go a long way. There must be a middle ground to be found – not sitting on the fence, but chatting over it.
The scheme is delivered by the Council and iChoosr, an independent specialist provider in collective energy switching. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to group together and pay less for their energy. Residents can switch electric or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or to manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction.
SEPEMBER TIP: The single most effective method to attract wildlife is to build a pond. Water attracts insects, amphibians, mammals and birds in their scores. It needn't be big – you'll be shocked by how quickly something not much larger than a sunken bucket is colonised. There are plenty of plants for smaller ponds, like Typha minima (miniature bull rush).
It is free for residents to register their interest and registrations for the first auction are now open. The first auction for Charnwood will take place on 8 October. For more information about Charnwood Big Switch and to register visit https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodbigswitch

Leicester Sea Cadets offering more and more to the young people of Leicester OVER THE last few months Leicester Sea Cadets has successfully run a new national youth project through Youth United Foundation (YUF) by opening its doors to nine years olds for the first time ever. This means that an extra 30 local children have been able to take advantage of adventures and activities outdoors. The group also welcomes parents and other adults in the community to help out and all gain further qualifications together, such as Duke of Edinburgh Award, Royal Yachting Association qualifications, BTECs, and British Canoeing Awards. Richard de la Mare, Eastern Area Officer for Leicester Sea Cadets said: “We are absolutely delighted that with the support of the Youth United Foundation we have been able to extend the access of this project in Leicester. This important project has enabled more young people to be able to experience the adventures and activities outdoors, helping to equip them with the resilience, self-belief and social confidence needed to thrive in modern day life.” In October Leicester Sea Cadets will be running the National Citizen Service (NCS) Programme that welcomes 16- 17 year olds to join a project run in half term to feel challenged and engaged whilst taking part in the four-phase programme. Check Leicester Sea Cadets out on Facebook - www.facebook.com/seacadetsleicesteruk, or visit them at 140 Ross Walk, Leicester LE4 5HH on a Tuesday or Thursday or call them on: 0116 266 2865. Changes to bulky waste service confirmed
Edible Forest Festival Returns to Charnwood Forest A feast of unique food and drink events from 7-15 September 2019 The annual Edible Forest Festival returns this September to celebrate the best in local food and drink at unique and iconic settings around the ancient woodland of Charnwood Forest. From 7-15 September 2019, there will be a range of tasty food and drink events including afternoon tea in the iconic Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, dining under the stars in one of our unique dining pods, Trappist Brewery Tours, Safari Supper around Charnwood’s finest eateries and another outstanding Secret Gourmet evening with Michelin star holder, Chef John Duffin. New events at this year’s Edible Forest Festival include a cider tasting night, cheese pairing and a vegan day. Additional new events will be announced shortly. People can sign up at www.edibleforest.co.uk to make sure that they get first in the queue when tickets go on sale.
Currently, Charnwood residents can request from the Council three free bulky waste collections each year and only face a charge after exceeding that amount. However, the Council’s Cabinet has agreed to introduce a £20 charge for each collection for up to three items. Officers will also consider an exemption scheme for people experiencing exceptional hardship.
The Edible Forest festival was created by Leicestershire Promotions and is supported by Charnwood Borough Council and Everards.
The Council will review the changes after six months and ensure promotion of alternative methods of collection to residents. Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts at the Council, said: “We must ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible and that means looking at alternative ways of funding services.
Bradgate Park calendar launch A 2020 calendar celebrating Bradgate Park has been officially launched by Bradgate Rotary. The event took place at the Stamford Arms in Groby on 10th July. Those attending the event included outgoing Bradgate Park Director, Peter Tyldesley; sponsors of the calendar; members of Bradgate Rotary; and members of LeicesterForest Photographic Society, who took the photographs for the calendar.
“The changes will help ensure we can maintain a high-quality, frontline service.” Cabinet approved the changes at a meeting on July 4. The current bulky waste service costs around £105,000 to operate and introducing the charge is expected to generate around £60,000 a year.
This is the fourth year that Bradgate Rotary has produced a calendar for the Park, sales of which raise vital funds for Bradgate Park Trust. The calendar depicts scenes from the Park - landscapes, events, wildlife and flora through the different seasons. The calendar is available to purchase from Bradgate Park for £5. A Bradgate Rotary spokesperson said: “We’d like to give a special thanks to members of Leicester Photographic Society who took such great photographs, and to Groby Allotment Society, who supplied recipes inspired by locally-grown produce which are included in the calendar.”
Changes to Charnwood Borough Council’s bulky waste collection service have been approved. The Council is one of only a handful of authorities in England to currently offer a free collection for some bulky items from people’s doorsteps.
The new charges are due to be introduced in October. More information is contained in the Cabinet report.

FREE 'LEARN TO SING in HARMONY' COURSE 2019
This concert promises something for everyone. Charnwood Voices have been busy rehearsing the wide and varied programme that will be on offer on Saturday 12th October in St Andrew's Church, Kegworth and are really looking forward to what should be a musical feast for you all to enjoy.
Due to the overwhelming success of last September/ October “Learn to sing in Harmony” course we are holding another course starting Monday 23rd September through October, so come on why not be part of 'Learn to Sing in Harmony' The free 'Learn to Sing in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS, aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men and women both young and older to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men and women who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s free!
Come along to revel in a mix of sacred and secular music from Plainsong to Cole Porter, Rheinberger to Over the Rainbow and the beautiful Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen. The choir will be conducted by Musical Director, Nicholas Scott-Burt. You are promised a night of 'harmonic luminescence' so don't hesitate – get your tickets NOW. Tickets will be available on the door but we recommend you buy them early from choir members or request them via an email to tickets@charnwoodvoices.org.uk. The price of £10 includes a glass of wine or fruit juice and if you have any U16s in the family they will be welcome for free!

BIRSTALL FLOWER CLUB
ST. JAMES MONDAY GROUP
Members of BIRSTALL FLOWER CLUB have enjoyed a wonderful summer break. Mrs Sylvia Simes organised two evening trips to visit local gardens, and a day trip out to Staffordshire. The weather was not kind to us when we visited Redland House, Cropwell Bishop, Notts, but we were not deterred. After a wet walk around the garden, we all enjoyed a piece of cake and a drink. The weather was much kinder on our second visit to Groby. The “Open Garden” was a work of art, with different areas of planting and seating around every corner.
In support of Glebe House, Loughborough, the charity we are supporting this year, we are having a coffee morning at the home of one of our members, which will also include a raffle, plant and book sales, and which promises to be a lovely morning. Other members have pledged to make or donate: a quilt and bags (always beautiful work), apple pies (yummy), a supper evening, a visit to a garden centre (to include lunch) and flower arrangements. We have some very talented and able members in the Monday Group.
In September, our NAFAS demonstrator’s title is Fascinating Hats, and members have been asked to wear a hat/fascinator for the evening – visitors welcome - £5. On 27th November at 7.15pm, we have our “ CHRISTMAS OPEN EVENING” in Birstall Village Hall. We have NAFAS demonstrators Kate Russell & Patti Dawson coming to present – “Christmas is coming, here we come again”. These two ladies have been to our Club before and we welcome their return. We have seen them in many roles; medieval maids, 18th century country house guests, and who can forget Kate as a Christmas turkey? You will be sure of a most entertaining and hilarious evening as well as beautiful flowers for lucky people to win and take home. This wonderful evening is open to the public. Tickets are available from Sylvia (01162674206) or Mary (07704398017) - £10
If you have any questions about any of the above, or perhaps would like to put in a bid for any of the treats on offer, or the activities of the Group, please contact the leader, Jane Scott, on 0116 2673761, who will be pleased to talk to you.
On Wednesday 4th December we will be running our every popular Christmas door wreath making workshop. This is held in Birstall Village Hall – 2 sessions (2.30pm and 7pm). The cost of £20 includes all you will need to take home your personalised door wreath. Contact mary.linnett@gmail.com
Last year, our chosen charity was the Baldwin Trust narrow boats, and on 8th August 10 of us were invited on to 'Dandelion' for a 4 hour trip on the River Soar/Canal. We were blessed with a perfect, glorious summer day, and we had a lovely trip. It was also very rewarding to see the defibrillator that we raised money for, in situ on the boat. Our next outing is a coach trip to Lincoln on 30th August, and we are looking forward to that.
The Family Obstacular - a Big Day Out! BRADGATE ROTARY’S Family Challenge Day takes place on Sunday 15th September. The Family Obstacular or Family Funtacular will be taking place in a new location in the Charnwood Forest. Fun and Family are the key words, this is NOT a mud, blood guts and glory event, but something to bring out the competitiveness without the pain while raising funds for some of our local charities. Alongside the challenges, there will be opportunities to enjoy a day out with stalls, bouncy castle and food options. Not everyone will need to take part in the challenges to appreciate the day, but we suspect you might want to anyway. So pencil on the family calendar the date and watch this space for more details of the Family Obstacular on Sunday 15th September.

Lottery now helping the fab 50! Charnwood Community Lottery is celebrating a milestone as the 50th good cause has signed up to take part.
room for more. It’s free for good causes to join the lottery so I’d encourage all non-profit organisations, charities and clubs to register.
Friends of Hallam Fields joined the lottery recently and is a parents and teachers association raising funds for Hallam Fields primary school in Birstall.
“Good causes that are interested in joining the lottery can find out more by visiting our website.
So far, more than ÂŁ10,000 has been raised by the lottery, which is run by the borough council, since it launched last year. Good causes include community libraries, swimming clubs, history groups, scout groups, play groups, village halls and various charities. Cllr Deborah Taylor, lead member for Communities said: “We’re delighted to have Friends of Hallam Fields on board and wish them every success. The lottery was introduced to offer groups and voluntary organisations an additional way of funding the services they offer. “It’s fantastic to see so many different groups signed up for the lottery but there’s always

towards helping good causes in the borough and people can choose which good cause to support when buying their ticket. The top prize in the Charnwood Community Lottery is ÂŁ25,000. Among the many groups to have benefitted is Living Without Abuse, a charity which supports women, men and children that have been affected by domestic abuse.
Hema Mistry, chair of the Friends of Hallam Fields group said: “Funds raised through the Charnwood Community Lottery will help enhance the children’s school experience through additional events and activities.
Living Without Abuse joined the lottery when it launched and has already received ÂŁ466. Debbie Hughes, chief executive officer at Living Without Abuse said: “The Charnwood Community Lottery offers the charity some additional and regular funding to help us deliver services to residents in Charnwood.
“As a new school that only opened in August 2017, every extra bit of funding helps us support the children in a big way. “The lottery offers parents, teaches and the local community the chance to help support a small primary school while still having the chance to win a prize. We’ve only recently joined the lottery, but I’d like to thank everyone who has chosen to support us with their ticket so far.
“As a good cause, it doesn’t cost us anything to be part of the lottery and the money raised so far has been used to help families recover from domestic and sexual abuse To play the Charnwood Community Lottery or to find out more about being one of the good causes, please visit www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk.

There should be a Make sure you will, and there is a are on the electoral register way! Thousands of forms are being delivered across Charnwood to ensure the borough’s electoral register is up to date.
For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will.
Charnwood Borough Council will be delivering around 76,000 household enquiry forms to homes and residents are being urged to respond.
To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated gift in their will to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times.
Every year the Council must check its electoral register is up to date and letters are sent to all households asking people to confirm the details or inform the Council of any changes. The aim is to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered and can have their say in future elections and referendums. One form is being sent to each household and people are being asked to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct. If the information is not correct (if people have moved out or in to the property) then residents need to let the Council know as soon as possible so individual electoral registration forms can be sent to those who need to register to vote. Geoff Parker, the Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Having the right to vote is very important and I would urge people to respond to the letter when they receive it on their door step. “It is a legal requirement to respond and dealing with the form promptly will avoid us having to visit your property and door-knock to get the required details. “Responses can be made by phone, online or by post using the pre-paid envelope provided.” The Electoral Registration Officer needs the information to be able to publish a complete and accurate electoral register on December 1 each year. Having your details on the electoral register will: • Allow you to be able to vote • Improve your credit rating • Make it easier to access council services • Help you avoid a fine Full details of how residents can complete the form online, by phone, via text or by post are all contained in the document sent to them. Any residents who have any questions can visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/electoralservices or contact the elections team on 01509 634546
We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk 14
The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/will-writing/ Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Anthony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately, 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.” “Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”
White Horse - Walton Brook Vineyard The White Horse is thrilled to be offering English Wine and Fizz from a local Vineyard in Burton in the Wolds. The Pub became aware of the wine after taking part in a vineyard run there in the Spring. Last month, a very enjoyable Monday lunch time was spent amongst the vines, wine tasting to decide on which products to introduce to the Pub. James, Charlotte, Paul and Jenny met with Catherine from Walton Brook for a tour and talk about the Vineyard and then went on to taste ‘the goods’. “It was a good job we had had a hearty brunch beforehand!” Said Paul Clements, Manager at the White Horse The two products selected were the Pinot Gris Fizz and Summer Reserve white wine. The Pinot Griz Fizz is an award-winning wine vintage 2013 won best sparkling White in the MVA awards 2018. The pub is also offering the Summer reserve which is a delicious easy drinking white blend of all the grape varieties that Walton Brook grow. The Walton Brook vines were originally planted in 2008 on a sunny South-facing slope at Horseleys Farm Burton on the Wolds and have been producing wine since 2011. The Vineyard has 9,000 vines on 10 acres of stunning countryside and is open for tastings and events for the public. The grapes are picked by hand and there is very minimal use of any pesticides, if fact a pair of buzzards guard the crop! New Figures show that the UK is one of the world’s fastest growing wine regions, a record 3 million vines were planted this year, double the year previous. There are now nearly 600 vineyards in the UK which is due to the warmer climate and farmer diversification. Charlotte Foy said “British Wine is still a niche product, but the quality is really improving, the wine from Walton Brook is craft made and you can really tell the dedication that’s gone into it. We love to bring something new to our customers and it was great to find these delicious gems on our doorstep. Come on down and try it out!”
