The pair had finished tied on two under par 138 after the 36 hole event, just one shot ahead of Richard Mansell, Beau Desert Golf Club who finished third, these three being the only competitors to finish the event under par. Just three Leicestershire golfers contested the event, with Willesley Park’s Oliver Dennies finishing in a three-way tie for 11th on 147. Coby Cartwright (Cosby) finished 18th and Jevann Parmar (The Leicestershire) tied 19th. In the play-off the first hole was halved in par fours, before Spooner drove the green at the tricky 2nd – a short uphill par four – to set up a birdie that Robinson, who drove to just short of the cross bunker that guards the green, failed to match. His 66 in the second round was the lowest score of the day and helped him improve on his previous best in the event, a third place in last year’s competition, held at Oundle. Club President Bryan Payne said: “It is wonderful for the club to host a prestigious event like this. It’s a very positive occasion for the club and it is great to see so many wonderful young golfers enjoying playing our course”.

Don't get spooked! Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge Calling all youngsters - it’s time again for Leicestershire libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is Creepy House, and with it the promise of spine-tingling adventures for holidaying schoolchildren. Creepy House runs from Saturday (July 6) to September 7 and children aged 4-12 years have to visit their local library three times during the summer and read or listen to six books to complete the reading challenge. All children who complete the challenge will receive a Creepy House certificate and medal. The Creepy House challenge will be officially launched at a family fun morning being held at Donington-le-Heath Manor House, near Coalville, on Saturday. During the event (10.30am to 1pm), children can investigate clues and follow a trail through the Creepy House, listen to spine-tingling tales and take part in other ‘spooky’ craft activities. There will also be face painting with Livi Lollipop. The Creepy House materials have been illustrated by Chris Riddell, who was involved in The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet member for heritage, leisure and arts, said: “With the theme being Creepy House, and with Donington-le-Heath Manor House a regular host to ‘ghost trails', it seemed the ideal place to hold the family fun morning.” There is also free entry to Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Snibston Discovery Museum for children taking part in the challenge. Each child must produce their Creepy House sticker poster at reception and be accompanied by a full-paying adult. All the creepy action does not stop at Donington-le-Heath, though. On Friday, August 2, Snibston’s Century Theatre will be playing host to acclaimed author Tommy Donbavand, who is the creator of the successful Scream Street series. Tommy is giving a talk eerily titled Giant Crabs Ate My Brain from 11am to 12 noon and again from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. He is also hosting a fun workshop from 1pm to 2pm when children can write a fun story in his fast and furious 'idea busters' writing workshop. To find out more about the Summer Reading Challenge call into your local library or visit: www.leics.gov.uk/creepyhouse Summer Reading Challenge co-ordinators in the county are also looking for 14-25 year-olds who would like to volunteer for this year’s programme. There is a chance for volunteers to increase their communication, organisational and creative skills – as well as further exploring a love of books – by taking part and, for more information, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/volunteers_opps

Inspired by the Tour De France? Then Get in the Saddle and Join a Sky Ride! IF you’ve been inspired by the 100th Tour de France, then why not jump in the saddle and follow your heroes by joining a Sky Ride Local. With Britain’s Chris Froome inspiring thousands of sporting fans across the country, Charnwood Borough Council has joined forces with British Cycling to offer a range of two-wheeled events around the Borough this summer. Sky Ride Local rides are free bike rides, organised and guided by friendly British Cycling-trained Ride Leaders who are happy to provide advice, encouragement and support along the way. And the good news is you don’t need to be a Tour de France pro to take part!
THE MONDAY CLUB
Rides range from ‘easygoing’ to ‘challenging,’ so whether you aspire to be the next Chris Froome or simply prefer to take things at a gentler pace, there’s something for everyone.
With the July weather hot and strong, we ventured to pastures new for our Strawberry Cream Tea on Monday 8th July. Our chosen venue this year was “Woodlands” Nurseries and Restaurant at Stapleton on the A447. After a delightful journey crossing the surrounding countryside, members used their visit to explore the vast Nursery together with notable shops containing quality clothing, crockery, glassware and kitchenware.
Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “As Le Tour takes centre stage on television screens around the world, it’s now easier than ever to get out on your bike in Loughborough and join a great local route.
ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
At the appointed time we gathered in the newly arranged quiet area of the Restaurant, to enjoy a very generous Tea consisting of a large fruit scone, jam, and luscious English strawberries and a very generous portion of double Cream. Accompanying this feast was a pot of tea for two or more cups, milk and sugar individually served; this added a feel of quality as opposed to the “all-in-one” usually served elsewhere. On conclusion of a very pleasant occasion, a Raffle was drawn in favour of the Salvation Army, our chosen Charity for the year, raising approximately £31. Our next meeting takes place on 12th August at our usual venue the Evangelical Free Church, Cropston, 2.15pm -title of the talk “And who lived in a house like this..? Enquires Tel 0116 2363467

Rothley Scouts AGM and Cub Scouts gain Silver Award 1st Rothley Scouts held their AGM on June 10th to report back to parents on the events of the last twelve months and our plans for 2013/14. Each section, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts presented to the audience of parents, leaders and Executive Group members as well as the Charnwood District Commissioner, Carol Black. The chairman, Simon Lawrence, told us how the refurbishments for our hut are progressing. The building work is due to start this summer and we hope to have much better accommodation for the group by the Autumn Term. Our thanks go to everyone who has supported our fund raising events so far; your donations are really appreciated and have been put to good use. We are a thriving group of nearly 80 children and young people and the presentations left us in no doubt that the children have a packed and energetic programme including , camping, adventure days, hikes, football tournaments, swimming galas, bowling, theatre visits, parades, Leicestershire Scouts’ events and charity work in addition to the badge programmes we deliver on a weekly basis. In addition our thanks go to parents who have offered their services this year to run sessions for the group. A pilot, ran a session for Air Activities with the Beavers and the Curriculum Leader for English at Roundhill Academy, Thurmaston, came in to run a session for Shakespeare’s birthday.

From Nevada to Soar Valley Mountsorrel WI Mountsorrel WI met on Thursday 13th June at the Parish Rooms. The speaker was Wendy Coley who represented Medical Detection Dogs. She was accompanied by her very well behaved, and gorgeous, pet Labrador.
The Soar Valley Rotary Club President Peter Jones welcomed the second of three visiting young people under the Rotary Youth Exchange scheme. Zoey Gray from Carson City, Nevada is being hosted by our sponsors Maia Harrison-Bond from Mountsorrel who is a pupil at Quorn Rawlins. At the weekly Club meeting Zoey showed an interesting short DVD of her home describing her family life and interests. During her stay in the UK Zoey will be visiting London, Cambridge, York and Stratford-upon-Avon as well as local beauty spots. Maia will be accompanying Zoey back to Nevada shortly and is looking forward to seeing many interesting sights in the USA. Medical Detection Dogs is a charity that works in partnership with researchers, NHS Trusts and Universities. Their aim is to train specialist dogs to detect the odour of human disease. Dogs are renowned for their sense of smell. The Medical Alert Dogs are trained to assist individuals who manage complex medical conditions on a day to day basis. Their dogs are taught to identify the odour changes that are associated with certain medical events. For example for someone living with diabetes, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or the avoidance of it can be a daily problem. Symptoms can vary from confusion to seizures or comas and be life threatening. Once trained, the Medical Alert Dogs recognise blood sugar levels outside the normal range and warn their owners or get help, before the symptoms are felt. They will bring their owner any necessary medical supplies such as glucose and blood testing kits. They can also be trained to push alarm buttons. How clever is that! Wendy was extremely entertaining and raised awareness of this charity and also explained how people could help in various ways from donating money to puppy walking. The next open meeting will be held on 8th August at 7.30pm in the parish rooms. The speaker will be Judy Marshall on Corn Dollies. All visitors will be very welcome so why not come along and try it! We certainly are not just Jam and Jerusalem. At the moment we are darts and skittles! Please just turn up or for further details contact Alison Aldwinckle on 07517232029

The Summer Club which runs until 28th August 2013. Each week your children could be having lots of fun in the hands of our experienced, CRB checked, first aid trained youth workers and sports coaches. We will be offering numerous activities during Summer 2013, including: Sports, Arts & Crafts, Treasure Hunts, Picnic’s, Nature walks, Den Making, Camping, and many more exciting games! All of our activities are great for letting your children meet new friends, building confidence and getting them out of the house and active. All activity weeks are organized beforehand which means each day the children will get to experience a new activity to get involved in. Children will need to bring with them a packed lunch and/or tea (whichever is appropriate for their length of stay) and they will require appropriate clothing for outdoor games and messy activities, plenty to drink throughout each day and a supply of sun cream as appropriate. There are limited spaces and so we are asking parents to book and pay for their children at least one week in advance throughout the scheme and would advise parents to book now to secure their children’s places and to avoid disappointment. The Summer Club will operate from 8:00am in the morning until 6:00pm in the evening, Monday to Friday for the duration of the holiday and the costs are £20.00 per day (£15.00 per half day) and we offer a concession for a second sibling attending on the same day of £15.00 per day. For further information please either contact the Parish Council Offices on 0116 267 6191 or email: admin@birstallpc.org.uk or you can attend the Wednesday evening Youth Club for 8-11 year olds, in the Sports Pavilion on School Lane Playing Fields, between 6pm – 8:30pm and discuss your requirements with our youth workers.

Breastfeeding Flashmob
Farmers' markets set for country parks
It was Breastfeeding Awareness Week at the end of June and a “Flashmob” was arranged by the NHS in Leicestershire to draw attention to the importance of breastfeeding and the information and support available to families. Meals on Heels was the theme and about 60 women and their babies went along to the event on Humberstone Gate in Leicester. At the allotted time chairs appeared, balloons were released and for a precisely-timed ten minutes mums fed their babies and then went on their way.
Leicestershire’s country parks are going to be offering the best of local produce.
Sara Mitchell from Birstall has two sons Roman, 2 years, and Lawson, aged 5 months. She says “I attended the flash mob because I wanted to show that it's not right for anyone to make breastfeeding mums feel embarrassed about feeding their babies wherever they may be! When a baby’s hungry, you don't have a choice!” Louise Hull, also from Birstall, attended because she wanted to highlight the fact that breastfeeding in public is normal and just meeting a baby's basic need. She says “I used to worry quite a lot about feeding in public, and it always made me feel more comfortable when I saw other people doing it.” Louise has a son Benjamin, 2 years, and a daughter Alice, aged 4 months. Both Sara and Louise were supported by the Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group. For more information about breastfeeding see www.leicspart.nhs.uk/infantfeeding and www.charnwoodbras.co.uk
The county council has linked up with Leicestershire Food Links for a series of farmers’ markets to be set up at both Watermead and Beacon Hill country parks over the coming summer months. The farmers’ market will be at Watermead North near Syston on Sunday 21st July. Produce on offer from 10am-5pm will include organic meats, cakes, dog treats, locallybrewed beer, olives and savoury pies. Nick Fell, the county council’s countryside manager, said: “It’s an innovative move to welcome local suppliers and we're delighted to be collaborating with Leicestershire Food Links.” The dates for the farmers’ markets are: Watermead (Sunday, July 21, September 8) and Beacon Hill (August 11 and September 29). There are also plans for a “Picnic in the Park” event at Market Bosworth on August 4 which will include music, entertainment and locally sourced food.
'Get Creative & Discover Your Inner Artist/ Musician!' Local professional artist Sue Faulks, and her husband Simon, a guitarist and teacher, are running various courses/workshops throughout the summer, from their new studio in Birstall. Sue says; " We have converted our garage into a studio- a space in which we can pass on our creative skills, and our love of music and the arts, to our local community. The studio is a warm, friendly, relaxing environment, where you can learn new skills and rediscover old ones, in a small group setting". For more details re art courses, contact Sue on Mob: 07984 197114, or visit her website: suefaulksart.co.uk. For guitarist courses, contact Simon on 07954379482 Sue and Simon are both fully CRB checked.

FILMREVIEW Monsters University - U Monsters University is the inspired prequel to one of the greatest animated movies of all time. Back before they joined Monsters Inc. Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) had to learn the scaring skills they would later use to such brilliant effect and what better place to do that than at Monsters University? But, forced to share a room in the University residence, they are instant deadly enemies until circumstances conspire to bring them together into the force we know and love. Monsters University is a brilliantly funny story of friendship and how a fright can be good for you.

Don’t forget to renew your tax credits by 31 July, says Loughborough tax specialist Loughborough small businesses and business owners are being urged not to miss the deadline at the end of the month to renew any tax credits claims. Phil Marriott who runs TaxAssist Accountants in Loughborough said; “July 31st is the deadline for any tax credit renewals and it is vital that Loughborough small business owners ensure that the Tax Credit Office has the latest information for them”. Existing tax credits claimants should have received their renewal pack by now and it will include the Annual Review notice and for those working, the Annual Declaration form. “Business owners must renew their tax credits claim before the end of the month”, said Phil Marriott. “They should have their accounts and tax return for the year ended 5th April 2013 drawn up as they’ll need the figures to put on their Declaration. The accompanying Annual Review notice must also be completed and checked thoroughly before returning the whole pack to the Tax Credits Office ahead of the deadline, the 31st July”. Phil warned business owners; “Failure to meet the deadline could result in the wrong payments being made and worst case, your tax credits payments being stopped altogether. So avoid leaving your renewal until the last minute, when you could make mistakes rushing it and could face problems when trying to contact the Tax Credits Office due to the volume of calls they receive nearer the deadline.” TaxAssist Accountants Loughborough is a local business, operating across Loughborough and the surrounding villages, providing tax and accountancy advice and services purely to small businesses.
