Edward Argar MP Member of Parliament for Charnwood “I find myself writing this article about yet another village bank closure in our area, specifically the disappointing decision by Santander to close its Birstall branch on the 27th June. Readers may be aware that last year, Barclays bank took the decision, despite tireless campaigning, to close its Syston Branch. In both instances, the reasons cited appear to be as a result of changes in the way customers engage with their branches. My biggest concern about these bank closures is the very real impact they have upon our rural communities – as everything becomes more digital, the banks argue that demand for counter services, within branches, is falling. Whilst I recognise that this is, of course, an important factor, it leaves customers in a bit of a catch 22 especially in rural constituencies like Charnwood. Unsurprisingly, those who are impacted the most are often elderly or vulnerable customers who prefer to go into their branches and see a friendly face, rather than going online to access their banking information, and who can’t easily travel to a nearby branch in another village. I recently called senior Santander representatives to a meeting with me in Parliament where I had the opportunity to set out my, and local people’s, disappointment at their. At the meeting, I raised a number of concerns about older or vulnerable residents, the impact on local businesses, and the future for branch staff. I also reiterated my strong view that banks have social as well as financial obligations to protect customers and the communities they serve, and challenged them on what was being done to ensure customers could still carry out transactions in Birstall. I was assured that Santander had written to all its branch customers, and I understand it is providing specific advice and support to older and to more vulnerable customers. For customers who are not currently online or do not wish to use an online service, the local Post Office team will be able to help Santander customers conduct transactions and other day-to-day banking activities. I was pleased to learn that the agreements that Santander has with the Post Office is not limited to current accounts, but also includes savings accounts. I was also assured that business customers would not be affected because they already use Santander’s online services. In relation to staff, I was also pleased that Santander reassured me it is working with its colleagues in the Birstall branch to find suitable redeployment opportunities for them - I’d like to pay tribute to all the staff in the Birstall branch for their service to the local community, and for being a friendly face to many of their regular customers. Finally, I asked what guarantees Santander could offer on the continued future operation of the Syston branch. They reassured me they have no plans to close the bank in the foreseeable future, and in fact, I understand the branch is due to be refurbished later this year. I welcome this commitment to the branch and to the town. While I was grateful to Santander directors for coming to see me and for listening to what I had to say, I was very sorry that they were clear the closure was a ‘done deal’, with the decision already made. More broadly, I was clear with them that I, and local people, believe they have a moral obligation to their customers to continue to provide access to branch facilities and to the broader communities they work in. As always, if you feel I can be of any assistance to you as your MP, please email me on edward.argar.mp@parliament.uk , or write to me at Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.”

SKIPPERS DRUM UP FUNDS FOR INJURED SERVICEMEN

The Parish Council are pleased to announce that this years Gala will again be a one day only event and the date has been agreed of Saturday, 22nd June 2019.

Birstall Golf Club’s new skippers are expecting to have plenty of time for their new roles. Ladies’ captain Dawn Ruparelia has just retired from running a wedding dress business in Leicester, and men’s captain John Meachem retires from his job in health insurance soon.

The fairground will start the ball rolling for the weekend by opening on at 11am and the bands will begin to perform at mid-day up until 7pm, there will then be a short interval whilst the stage is prepared for the ‘Proms in the Park’ event which will commence at 7:30pm and conclude with a Firework        Finale at 10pm (weather permitted).

John has lived in Birstall for nearly 30 years, playing cricket for the village club and ‘hospitality golf’ before joining the club some 13 years ago: ‘Our main priority is to ensure everyone enjoys the year and that the teams enjoy success in the year’s competitions”. Dawn lives in Glenfield, and while she has retired from business faces competition for her time from her family: she has just found out she will become a grandmother for the first time later in the year.

A full list of performances throughout the day and night will be made available as soon as possible. Please note that for Health & Safety reasons the Council has a complete ban on BBQ’s on the field throughout the event, however, you are more than welcome to bring your picnics, tables, chairs, gazebos, etc. there will be ample hot food outlets available throughout the event, so we hope this will not deter anyone from attending this popular Summer’s evening event.

What a great response from our mixed “Everyone in Harmony“ course that started last October, some 40 people came along on the first evening, and to date 18 have fully signed up with our newly formed mixed chorus.

The Parish Council is always grateful for help at this busy event and if you wish to volunteer some of your time to assist the staff and Councillors, your help would be most appreciated. Please contact the office on 0116 267 6191 or email: admin@birstallpc.org.uk for further information.

Great Response We would just like to thank everyone who has submitted an article this month after our appeal for more local news and events, we have had some great feedback from people who submit articles see below.

We even took our newest members to their first “ Singout “ at the Loros Christmas Concert in December which gave them a taste of performance in front of a large and appreciative audience.

This coming May we will be attending the annual Barbershop Convention in Bournemouth,    competing  as a mixed  chorus   for the firsttime.  The inclusion   of Ladies into what was a male chorus adds a new and exciting dynamic to our             sound and should any other Ladies (and men) wish to join us then just come   evenings   7-30  Birstall   Club      along, Monday Social

Churches Together The first Sunday of every month is our 'All Together' service, which is precisely what it says! All of us who attend regularly, and those who don't, plus everybody who would like to join in for this Sunday, all together for this one Parish service. In March, the service was made extra special by holding the Baptism service for one of our young people, which was lovely for all of us there. That same week was quite eventful, with Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday seeing services in St. James and in the lovely church in Wanlip. Now, of course, we are in Lent, with the Churches Together holding Lent courses based on the 'Living Faith' being held in various venues around Birstall. If you would like to know more, and perhaps join in, please contact the Rector, Vince Jupp, on 0116 2674517, or e-mail: vincejupp@btinternet.com. He would be very pleased to hear from you. During Lent, members of our churches are currently preparing a number of 'Stations of the Resurrection' for display and as an aid to prayer over the Easter period. Children from Riverside and Highcliffe schools have visited St. James church and learned about Christian weddings and christenings, two celebrations which are always joyous affairs.

Half Pints Childcare rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted Half Pints Childcare in Birstall was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. Ofsted said ‘Half Pints offer children an excellent early years’ experience where they thoroughly enjoy learning and make outstanding progress’ and ‘the children enjoy inspirational experiences within the local community promoting an understanding of the world’. A spokesperson said it is extremely difficult to get an endorsement of ‘Outstanding’ from Ofsted, ‘we are absolutely delighted that Ofsted recognise how committed we are in ensuring all children in our care receive the best start in life and ‘promote every aspect of their learning’. Thank you to all our families and the Local Birstall Community for their support over the last 17 years.

'Old Nick's' Coffee Shop, with its super selection of home-made cakes with coffee or tea, continues on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in Wanlip Community Hall, just by the church, where, at the moment, the snowdrops make a carpet of white blossom, but not for long, unfortunately. The 25th March also sees the celebration of Our Lady and St. Nicholas Patronal Festival at 7.30 p.m., with a service of Holy Communion. The March Deanery Synod will be held at Beedles Lake Golf Clubhouse, with Bishop Martyn and Bishop Guli speaking. As this synod is open to all, many of the congregation from St. James and St. Nicholas will attend. At the moment we are all being pursued by our church paparazzi - keen to take our photos in readiness for the church photo album being put together by Canon Anne Horton. That is a fun thing to do! I feel like a celebrity!

Netball now sessions

ST. JAMES

New netball sessions are giving women a flexible way to play the sport.

MONDAY GROUP

The borough council’s Active Charnwood team is hosting the Netball Now sessions at Wreake Valley Academy in Syston.

We are a group who meet at 7.30 p.m. on the 2nd Monday of every month in the Age Concern rooms of the Village Hall in School Lane. We talk quite a lot (!) but we also listen a lot - to invited speakers on very diverse subjects, such as 'The History of Spam' (in April) and 'Our true self' by Brother Andy (in June).

The fun and informal sessions are being run in partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire and Rutland Sport. They’re aimed at women over 16 who simply want to turn up and play without any coaching or commitments. Samantha Chamberlain, community sport and physical activity development officer said: “These sessions are perfect for anyone who enjoys playing netball but doesn’t want to play in a competitive environment.

In May we will have a short service in St. James with a speaker from our chosen charity. This year we have chosen 'Glebe House', which is based in Loughborough. They provide services and support for people with learning disabilities, both children and adults, across the whole spectrum of physical and mental disabilities, and also support for their families.

“It’s not a coached session, people are able to simply turn up, pay a small fee and play a game of netball.” Sessions cost £3 and all you need to do is turn up and bring appropriate footwear. The sessions get underway on Thursday April 18, 6.30pm-7.30pm. If you want more information, contact Sam Chamberlain at samantha.chamberlain@charnwood.gov.uk or 01509 632534.

Our chosen charity last year was the Baldwin Trust narrow boats, and our fund-raising resulted in £1500.00 to provide defibrillators for the boats.

Keep up to date with Active Charnwood on social media, follow @Activecharnwood or like their page on Facebook.

Reminder over registering to vote for local elections The last chance to register to vote for May’s local elections in Charnwood is April 12. Charnwood Borough Council has 52 councillors across 28 wards and all seats are up for election on May 2 this year. Parish and town council seats across the borough are also up for election. There are 131,207 people on the electoral register in Charnwood so most residents are already registered. However, if you are not, please visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before April 12. Geoff Parker, Returning Officer, said: “I would encourage people who are not already registered to vote to apply sooner rather than later. “Although the last date to apply is April 12, if you leave it until the last minute and there are any issues with your application then you may not be registered in time to vote in May’s local elections.” Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/local_ elections_2019 for more details about this year’s local election. Keep up with the latest local Charnwood elections news by following the Council on Twitter @CharnwoodBC and look for the hashtag #CharnElections19. The borough council is responsible for many services including bin collections, looking after 250,000 acres of parks and open spaces, determining planning applications, homelessness, managing 5,500 council homes and licensing to name but a few. The borough council is also responsible for three leisure centres, Loughborough Town Hall, Charnwood Museum and events such as Loughborough Fair.

Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride returns for its 9th year Every mile cycled brings us closer to a cure The Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride is back again for its 9th year running. With up to 300 cyclists taking part last year, the organisers Alex’s Wish are pleased to announce it will be taking place on Sunday, 12th May. This year’s main sponsor is Glynis Wright and Partners, with additional sponsorship from Nisa (Bradleys store) in Rothley, The Woodmans Stroke Pub in Rothley, United Carpets and Jay Webb Consultancy with Pedal Power as the on-site bike specialists. Emma Hallam Charity Founder and Alex’s Mum says “It would be so lovely to have you come along and join us this year - you’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air, enjoy spectacular views around the stunning Charnwood Forest whilst cycling for an incredibly worthwhile cause. It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months. We have a 10-mile, 20-mile and a 50-mile cycle route. The 10-mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 50-mile route will be a longer and more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. We are incredibly well supported locally and it’s always nice to see our supporters out and about on their bikes, having fun and raising much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open roads. “The route is well sign-posted,” explains Emma, “and because the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. At the end, you’ll be treated to complimentary yummy home cake cakes and refreshments – a perfect thought to get you through the ride.” This is a sponsored ride in aid of Alex’s Wish, a registered charity set-up to raise vital funds for an incurable childhood muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Alex’s Wish are investing in innovative medical breakthroughs to help all children lead a longer and more fulfilled life with the aim to finding a cure. All money that is raised through registration fees and sponsorship goes direct to this fantastic cause. The event organisers would also welcome volunteers to marshal and help out with refreshments on the day. If you are unable to ride but would like to help, please get in touch. To register for this fantastic and worthwhile cause, take advantage of the discounted early-bird entry fee to register before 30th April – the easiest and quickest way to so register is at www.alexswish.co.uk/event/charnwoodforest-cycle-ride or email zoe@alexswish.co.uk Alex’s Wish is a registered charity no: 1148845. New rounds of Charnwood New dates released for food grants to benefit community safety course

Community groups and charities are being invited to apply for funding in 2019. The Charnwood Grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council in a bid to help local organisations, charities and community groups access funding support.

Food handlers who have not received any formal training are being encouraged to sign up to a food safety course. Charnwood Borough Council runs the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering and offers people the opportunity to learn the basics of food hygiene.

Cllr Deborah Taylor, the Council’s lead member for communities, said: “Our grant scheme helps support the local community and have benefitted many groups and individuals over the years. We want to see that continue so I would encourage people to look at what’s on offer and apply.”

The course is aimed at people who are starting out in the catering industry and require some formal training. Cllr Margaret Smidowicz, the Council’s lead member for regulatory services said “It’s important that people who handle and serve food to the public understand the basics.

So far the Council has awarded around £100,000 during the 18/19 rounds of funding.

“Our food safety team has developed this course which is a nationally recognised award to improve people’s knowledge and understanding. I would like to encourage those who have not had any formal training before to sign up for one of the courses available this year.” The course will be held on several dates throughout the next 12 months at the Council’s Southfields Offices in Loughborough. Dates include: April 4 July 4 - October 24 - January 23, 2020

“It is important to ensure that as much information as possible is included in your application. Some bids miss out because they lack detail, so take your time. If you need help, we can offer support and advice to complete your application, just get in touch.”

The Sileby Community Library was awarded £2,000 to upgrade its IT systems. Karen Freaks, from the library, said: “We were really pleased to receive £2,000 through the grants scheme. The money is being used towards providing visitors and volunteers at the library with more up-to-date IT equipment. “We’re hoping the new technology will enhance the service we provide to our customers and enable digital workshops to be run for the wider community to improve IT skills. “The support we received during the application process was helpful and flexible. If any community groups in Charnwood think they could benefit from some extra funding, then I would recommend they have a look at the grants to see if they’re eligible. It’s easy to do!”

People who attend will learn about legislation, food safety hazards, temperature control, food handling and principles of safe food storage.

There’s a range of grants on offer including: Community Development and Engagement – Deadline April 22, 2019 This grant can provide up to £10,000 for organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood.

The cost of the course is £50 (including VAT) per person. There are a limited number of places available on each course, so booking early to avoid disappointment is advised.

Community Facilities Grants and Feasibility Studies – Deadline April 22, 2019 The community facilities grants scheme can award funding of up to £20,000, to a maximum of 50% of the cost of a project which assists with the renovation and improvement of community buildings, and small-scale environmental improvement schemes.

For further information and to book, please contact a member of the food safety team on 01509 634656 or visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/foodsafetycourse

Loughborough Community Grants – Deadline April 23, 2019 These grants can provide up to £2,000 for properly constituted voluntary sector and community organisations and projects, which deliver activities with community benefits in Loughborough.

The Loughborough Half Marathon set to raise money for domestic abuse survivors Sunday 7th April sees the return of The Loughborough half marathon and team relay. The 13.1mile course has been described as one of the toughest in the East Midlands. Available places are hotly contested, with only 800 up for grabs this year. Organised by the Loughborough based charity Living Without Abuse, all the money raised from the event goes towards the charity’s vital and much needed work of supporting men, women and children who have had their lives shattered by domestic abuse. Living Without Abuse’s Event Organiser Gina King said: “This is the third and possibly last year the half-marathon will use this route and we are hoping for an excellent turnout. We only have 800 places available this year. The run is all on pavements, footpaths and pathways and is certainly tough but a fantastic course through some beautiful countryside.” This year the charity hopes to raise even more than last year’s figure of £20,000. It costs £400 to support just one person who is experiencing domestic abuse, so the money raised from this event makes a huge difference to people’s lives. Registration is now open and the entry fee for the half marathon is £26 for unaffiliated runners and £24 if you’re affiliated to a running club. There is also a Team Relay Challenge with four people per team with a total entry fee of £70.00. The event is co-sponsored by Duncan & Toplis Loughborough, A Plan Insurance Loughborough and the charity’s new headline sponsor for all events during 2019 Arch Communications. For more information and to enter the event please visit http://www.lwa.org.uk/events or email gina@lwa.org.uk for an entry form.
