Latest news from Charnwood Indoor Bowls Centre By Wendy Coley (Bowls development officer) With all the current publicity about getting people more active and finding a sport in which everyone can participate I would like to tell you all about indoor bowls in Charnwood. But first a bit about our clubs history. We are situated in Browns Lane, Loughborough to the left hand side of the Leisure Centre. We are very proud that the club was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales on Thursday 26th April 1990. Her picture takes pride of place on our club's lounge wall. Since then we have updated our facilities, including the lighting above the greens, and now have a superb 8 rink indoor bowls club as good as any in the Midlands. Indoor bowls is an enjoyable, rewarding sport that also offers great health benefits. It is a sociable activity for all ages from 10 to 100. As it is not dependent on strength or aerobic capacity it is a unique, multigenerational sport that men, women and children can enjoy playing together. Wheelchairs are available for disabled participants, as are aids for the visually impaired.

Indoor bowls can be as social or competitive as participants require. We have purely social bowlers and also members who compete in county and national competitions. In April 2017 the Leicestershire county indoor bowls finals were held at Charnwood Indoor Bowls club. There were many exciting matches and our club now boasts 4 county champions. For anyone interested in giving this superb sport a try we offer, by prior arrangement, a free initial session with coaching advice and bowls provided. You don't need any other equipment just wear comfortable clothes. For people who wish to continue there is free coaching every Sunday morning between 10am and 12 noon. If people wish to come on their own, or with a friend, to practice that is not a problem. However, there are also sessions on several days of the week where single bowlers can participate in bowls drives, where teams are allocated by picking a rink number. There are U3A groups, Women's Institutes and scouts amongst others who play regularly amongst themselves or in one of the many leagues or friendly matches that are organised by the club. We have a licensed bar in our lounge area and snacks are served in our sociable seating area. In fact our bacon cobs are legendary amongst other Leicestershire bowlers who visit the club to play in league matches! Please consider coming to have a look at what we have to offer and have a trial session in a warm, friendly welcoming atmosphere. We were all beginners once and remember that a caring smile makes all the difference. Our contact details are as follows: Phone 01509 210018 Email admin@charnwoodindoorbowlsclub.co.uk Website. www.charnwoodindoorbowlsclub.co.uk

THE ARCHERY BIG WEEKEND 17 & 18 JUNE 2017 Last year Kirby Muxloe Archery Club took part in ‘The Big Weekend’ for the first time. Following the success of that initial event, the club is repeating it this year and is welcoming members of the public to come along and ‘Have a Go’ at archery. 

If you’ve never shot an arrow but always wanted to try, now is your chance. In addition to being good fun and sociable, archery has many physical and mental benefits. It strengthens your upper body, improves co-ordination, balance and concentration and improves your maths skills as you keep score! Archery is one of the few sports that is inclusive to everyone, as all ages and abilities/disabilities can participate. Kirby members range from 9 to 80 years and we cater for those for whom shooting is a weekly relaxation or family evening out, through to those who aspire to shoot competitively. The Big Weekend will be on Saturday 17 June and Sunday 18 June from 12.00 hours to 15.00 hours at Kirby Muxloe Sports and Village Club, Ratby Lane, Kirby Muxloe, LE9 2AQ. Those of you aged 9 and up will be able to have a go at archery, shooting at various targets, you may even win a prize! If you require any further information please contact the club secretary: secretary@k-m-a-c.org

Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners Over the two-month period February to March the display, Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners, has received a considerable amount of footfall in addition to some very kind comments made in the Comments Book. The Display was opened by Francis Ellingworth son of Commander Ellingworth OIC Beaumanor during 1941/45. In addition, a number of family members of the “Y” Listeners attended the Display and has stated by the Chairman of the Local Studies Library Volunteers, “The families appear to have had a wonderful time exchanging experiences as passed down by their parents, who served at Beaumanor and they all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to meet other families. There was, as they say, a great “vibe”. We have been asked what happens to the Display now? Following discussions with Beaumanor staff it has been agreed that the Display will be moved to Beaumanor with a view to being displayed at a later date.

BOWLS - Successful Open Day Make a Date With

Our club held its first open day of the season on 5 May which was well attended by people wanting to give bowls a try. It was a very pleasant and sunny Friday evening, as shown on the picture. The green was in prime condition having been tended and manicured in preparation. Perfect conditions for a great evening of fun.

î ˘e Loughborough Orchestra Summer Concert!

Last time Yulia Northridge was guest soloist with the Loughborough Orchestra, she wowed the audience with Bruch's Violin Concerto, so the Orchestra members are really looking forward to her second visit. This time she will play the popular Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with its glorious slow movement and exciting outer movements! If you want to be sure of your place in the audience, it is advisable to buy a ticket in advance.

The visitors were shown the basics of bowling which probably most people are well aware of. It is surprising how many visitors tell you that someone in their family used to bowl and they have always fancied having a go. Most people latch on pretty fast and after 20 minutes or so are beginning to get into their stride and even surprising themselves as to how accurate they can be.

After maybe an hour of fun and banter we all started heading indoors having caught a whiff of bacon cobs coming from the clubhouse. Everyone then settled round the tables for conversation with tea, coffee or a drink from the bar, most visitors with good accounts of how much they had enjoyed the evening.

The club is holding another Open Day on Saturday 3 June when again, all visitors will be you can come down any Friday at welcome. but there is no need to wait for this. In fact, 6pm to give bowls a try. There is no charge and no obigation. Other times can be arranged to suit so please give my good friends John and Carolyn a ring on 2675947. So, why not try something diffent? The invitation is there. We take players of all abilities and offer free coaching as needed. The first year fee for new bowlers is only ÂŁ20. Good value fun in anybody's book. - St Margaret's Bowls Club Roly Green Co-operative Co-op Sports Ground, Birstall Road, Birstall LE4 4DE More details at www.smcbc.com.

Starting the concert is the lively Marche Slav by Tchaikovsky. This piece, which includes melodies from two Serbian songs, the Russian National Anthem and the 1812 Overture, was commissioned by the Russian Musical Society to help the Red Cross in their work with Serbian soldiers in a war against Turkey. If you don’t think you’ve heard this before, you will certainly recognise some of its melody lines.

The second half of the concert features Sibelius Symphony no. 2. Although Sibelius spent time in Italy whilst forming ideas for this work, it still resonates with a characteristic sound of the composer's Nordic - inspired music.

images of Finland permeate Musical the symphony, with some beautiful themes surfacing in its tuneful lines of music. The concert will be at Emmanuel Church, Forest Rd. on Saturday17th June 2017, starting at 7.30p.m.

Tickets are ÂŁ8.00, Concessions ÂŁ7.00, Children under 16 ÂŁ3.00 and are available from the orchestra website http://www.loughboroughorchestra.org.uk or from members of orchestra.

Nearly 2000 pink ladies take to streets of Leicester for annual LOROS Twilight Walk An army of more than 1,800 pink ladies marched through Leicester city centre on Saturday night to raise money for LOROS at the Hospice’s annual Twilight Walk. The event, which first launched back in 2010, had a record amount of women signed up this year and has raised in excess of £40,000 so far. This year’s breath-taking balloon release saw the skies above Leicester City’s King Power Stadium turn a shade of pink, before participants snaked through streets of the city, as the sun set.

The average time people aged 25 to 34 volunteering fell from 15 minutes a day in 2000 to six minutes a day in 2015, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. This is the age group that were entering the workforce when the recession hit. Many of them are still struggling to get jobs that they really want; meanwhile many are working only part-time and zero-hours. Such stress will have an effect on their ability/enthusiasm to volunteer.

spend

WHEN DID you last see a ‘young’ volunteer in your local charity shop? Many organisations which depend on are volunteers report that young people less and less willing to give up their free time.

Volunteer crisis

the route, entertainment points The streets were lined with volunteers marshalling with dotted around the city, which not only kept spirits high but also raised even more awareness throughout Leicester too.

“It was quite overwhelming to see women of all ages, including mothers, daughters, grandmas and friends turn Leicester pink, as they paraded round the city in their Twilight Walk T-shirts.”

for next year’s walk The theme is yet to be revealed, with the LOROS fundraisers to announce it in the near future. In the meantime, if you would like to take part in a similar event, then sign up now for this year’s LOROS Colourfun Mile, which is fun for all of the family and is taking place 7th June. on Wednesday

There is some good news: those aged 16 to 24 have increased from nine minutes a day to 17. Experts said this was because being told teenagers were increasingly that volunteering was necessary for them to get a job later on.

LOROS Event Co-ordinator Laura Fitzsawyer said: “This year’s event was a roaring success, with nearly double the amount of women taking part this time round, than last year.

Hosting this year’s event was award-winning magician, Romany and in keeping with this year’s myths and magic theme, she entertained participants with her mesmerising magic show. As as the Gem stars, the Gospel Choir, Sambando, well Dhol Drummers, Vikings of Middle England, stilt walkers, also entertained participants as they warmed up for the event.

Monthly Report from Councillor Renata Jones In addition to attending a number of meetings in Loughborough, full council, policy scrutiny committee, performance scrutiny committee, party group, and a training session, it was nice to be out and about in the ward too.

Community Centre There were two meetings of Birstall parish council, and I attended and presented to the full council meeting, and look forward to reading about their annual general meeting when reports are published and available. I restated to Birstall parish council’s meeting my willingness to assist where possible with progress towards a community hall. I’m pleased to subsequently finally see the planning notification for a highly anticipated community centre for our Hallam Fields area. Please cc me in if you contact the council, so I can support you where possible. Coffee with maundy money from the queen I went to one of many monthly coffee mornings in Wanlip, held on the third Tuesday of each month. I had a vague recollection of attending one a while ago, however working by day or attending other meetings has got in the way of attending this, sadly for some time. I heard this has been going for around a year now, and oh my, it is so popular! The hall was full, and it was great to sit and talk with residents, and see the bring and buy book club which helps fund the hall. I met a resident who had recently seen the queen and been a recipient of ‘maundy money’, at maundy Thursday proceedings. She was kind enough to bring and those in attendance her coins. A bright and shiny set, she had a new large silver £5 coin, a 50p piece with a special Sir Issac Newton design. She also had 91 smaller silver coins to celebrate our Queen’s 91 years. It was interesting to learn that her £5.50 represented a long running annual giving of money tradition, where monarchs of years gone by gave to the poor such a sum, originally sufficient to fund food and fuel for a year. Now it’s more symbolic.

New build homes, question to council Given residents’ concerns raised, I put a question on notice into our full council meeting at Charnwood borough council.

This was published online as 10.3, in the April meeting papers, as ‘adoption of open spaces’, and read: ‘Residents in my ward are experiencing developer-instigated service charges, related to freehold properties, for aspects such as road maintenance, street lighting and open space maintenance for their road and surrounding areas. Residents feel these charges are unfair, as they feel these should be a Council responsibility, and they feel they have already paid for these within their council tax bills. Build on this estate was started over a decade ago. Feedback from officers seems to be that this particular area remains unadopted, in terms of highways, street lighting, open spaces and possibly more. There is a concern expressed that the Council could seek to avoid adopting going forwards. With considerable building of new homes estates factored for within our Core Strategy going forwards, what is our policy on future adoption of public spaces, related to new build estates, across our Borough?’ Leader or nominee response read as: “The adoption of roads, foot ways and street lighting is a matter for Leicestershire Council. Any enquiries regarding these matters should be referred to them. The adoption of open spaces within a new development is considered through a Section 106 agreement, which is negotiated as part of the planning process. There is no set policy that requires a developer to transfer ownership to the Borough Council, or local Parish or Town Council. Where the sites are adopted by a Parish or Town Council or the Borough Council, a commuted sum is requested to cover the anticipated costs of maintenance over the following 20 years. This is calculated using a unit cost for maintenance. If agreement cannot be reached regarding the payment of a commuted sum for maintenance, the Council will not adopt the open space. If the Borough Council or the Parish or Town Council does not wish to adopt the open space or recreation land or the developer prefers to retain ownership of it, the developer may levy a management or service charge on residents in order to cover the ongoing costs. The requirement to pay the charge should be highlighted by their solicitor through the conveyancing process.

For information on any particular development members can contact the Head of Cleansing and Open Spaces for further advice.” You can watch my subsequent supplementary response and question speech online: https://youtu.be/3zmkv_SgGr8 Alternatively read this transcript: ‘I thank the member for this response. I appreciate the clarification that ‘there is no set policy in place that requires the developer to transfer ownership…’. I’ve also been told, the ‘adoption of open space [can occur] once planning permission is granted, and trigger points are reached in building out developments.’ And that, a ‘procedure [for this] is set out in the open space strategy.’ And I’m grateful that a copy of this strategy has recently been provided to me. I’ve contacted open spaces, and been informed in this development CBC have only adopted the balancing pond next to the A6, and parish council have only adopted two play areas. I have also already approached Leicestershire county council, and received a response from them, that ‘this road is un-adopted’, and ‘maintenance is to be referred to the relevant developer’. I have also approached for comment in this particular case, the developer with which CBC entered into the overarching S106 agreement. We’ll call them developer A, who referred me on location specified to a company we’ll call developer B. It seems service charges queried by resident stemmed from developer B. It’s thought by CBC officers, developer A, may have sold on land on to developer B over the years. I’m in the process of making contact with developer B for further information as this matter continues to unfold. I thank the member for clarification that these charges should have been highlighted by my residents’ solicitors, during the conveyancing process. I shall pass this information on to those concerned, who contacted me, somewhat, unfortunately, surprised by such charges. This does leave me with the supplementary query, of what powers related to S106, CBC retains, in light of land transfers, by developers, post S106 agreement? Is there any way we can help keep residents better informed? Can relevant officers prepare a briefing document to pass on to local residents affected?’ If you need me, do get in touch: http://renatajones.yourcllr.com/contact/

Regards, Renata

The re-launched Big Knit 2017 is now in full swing but Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland. is facing a huge challenge and need even more help to create as many little woolly hats as possible for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit before 17th July 2017 with an increased local target of 52,000 over that period! So far we have received just 6,500.

For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects. Whilst patterns can be obtained from Age UK, many knitters let their imagination run riot, last year producing designs including a Loch Ness monster, fruit, soldiers, peas in a pod, cupcakes and seagulls! Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or drop them in at one of their shops. Are you in danger from work-life merge syndrome? MAUREEN, the CEO of an animal charity, had a heart attack at 55. The reason astonished her: it was because she loved her job too much. ‘My whole life revolved around work. I loved my job, I didn’t realise I was so stressed.’ A recent study backed by AXA PPP Healthcare has found that more than half of City workers suffer dangerously high levels of stress. They fail to balance their home and work lives, and many are checking and answering their emails at 3am. But being a workaholic is not commendable – it is downright stupid. It could be killing you. And technology does not help: it means you can work anywhere and never quite switch off. The reason why people become driven employees vary, depending on generation. Millennials are preoccupied with money, socialising and making a difference; older generations are just trying to finish the mortgage and help fund their offspring. Latest News From Spring has sprung and at Woodside we knew the signs even before we started to notice the new leaves on the trees or the birds singing and getting ready to build their nests! You see we have a problem which seems to get earlier and more dramatic at this time of the year. Kittens! Okay so yes they are sweet... and cute... and lovely..... After months of duck-fuelled organisation, the White Horse's annual Charity Duck Race was an unmitigated success. It was a day of unrelenting positives; after a rainy start to the day, the sun shone down and the stalls, games and activities were bustling! The stalls this year were a great success, ably assisted by many Scouts and Guide members. There was plenty of money raised for the two respective charities, Girlguiding and Scout groups in Birstall; This years Duck Race benefitted from many new additions. There was music, provided by the Scouts, which added to the Gala atmosphere and the new Duck Mascot ‘Webster’ named by Karen Stewart was also a huge hit with the children. The Duck Race became a true ‘Sport’ by having its own commentator for the first time, Nik Loach, resident White Horse DJ. And with more than 40 prizes for winners in the Duck Race, a large handful of people were guaranteed to win, with the winning number being 939.

part offering craft activities for the little ones. Nick Farnham, Group scout leader, 53rd Leicester (Birstall St James ) said I would like to thank Charlotte Foy & Jenny Doyle of the "White Horse" Birstall for this unique opportunity to help secure much needed funds for our scout Hut. Our scout Hut opened in 1931, with the money raised it can go it's way to helping children and young adults in Birstall until its 100th birthday. Also I would like to thank the businesses of Birstall in helping to achieve this sum by donating prizes and also to the community of Birstall who turned in their masses to this annual event to show the forgotten art of "Community spirit". A special thanks to everybody associated with Scouting in Birstall and Leicestershire who volunteer to affect the lives of so many children.

THE JOE HUMPHRIES MEMORIAL TRUST On your marks, get set and get ready to run a very special mile for Joe FAMILIES and young children are invited to join a charity mile-long fun run to support the work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). Joe’s Jog, now in its fourth year, will take place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event, which takes place in the Leicestershire village on Tuesday 13 June. The inclusive and family-friendly fun run, which kicks off at 6.15pm, gives families and children aged seven and over the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. It also raises awareness of the vital work of the JHMT. Joe Humphries was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people. Since Joe’s death, his family and friends have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. They set up the JHMT to provide free CPR training, help fund community defibrillators and campaign for better understanding of SADS. The charity also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspiring young people to fulfill their potential. Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “We are all once again looking forward to hosting this event, which means families can join in the atmosphere of the Rothley 10k while helping to raise funds for our vital work saving young heartbeats. “A total of 133 runners took part last year and we do hope for another great turnout this year. “Sudden heart deaths like Joe’s aren’t inevitable, they’re preventable. If more people are CPR trained and more defibrillators are made available in public places, we can make a difference to the shocking statistic that 12 young people aged 12-35 die in the UK each week from undiagnosed heart conditions like SADS. “Running or supporting Joe’s Jog is a wonderful way to commemorate Joe in his home village and contribute to the charity we set up in his name. This couldn’t be possible without the selfless efforts of the Trust’s kind-hearted and talented volunteers, who are so willing to give up their precious time and are so committed to help make a difference.” Advance entry costs £5 for adults and £3 for children. On-the-day entry costs £10 for adults and £6 for children. All funds raised from Joe’s Jog will go towards JHMT’s work. For further details about the event, or to enter online, visit: http://jhmt.org.uk/joes-jog To find out more about the Trust’s work, to get involved as a volunteer, or to learn how to apply for the Inspire Awards or CPR training for your sports club, visit www.jhmt.org.uk More information about the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k is available at www.rothley10k.com
