BIRSTALL FLOWER CLUB Members of BIRSTALL FLOWER CLUB have enjoyed a wonderful summer break. Mrs Sylvia Simes organised two evening trips to visit local gardens, and a day trip out to Staffordshire. The weather was not kind to us when we visited Redland House, Cropwell Bishop, Notts, but we were not deterred. After a wet walk around the garden, we all enjoyed a piece of cake and a drink. The weather was much kinder on our second visit to Groby. The “Open Garden” was a work of art, with different areas of planting and seating around every corner.

INCLUSIVENESS at BIRSTALL METHODIST CHURCH In working towards an inclusive and welcoming church, Birstall Methodist Church (along with Rothley Methodist Church) is following the vision of the educational charity “Inclusive Church”. Its vision is as follows…. "We believe in inclusive Church - church which does not discriminate, on any level, on grounds of economic power, gender, mental health, physical ability, race or sexuality. We believe in Church which welcomes and serves all people in the name of Jesus Christ; which is scripturally faithful; which seeks to proclaim the Gospel afresh for each generation; and which, in the power of the Holy Spirit, allows all people to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Jesus Christ." Both Rothley & Birstall are now ‘registered’ with the Inclusive Church Network. It is a challenge for the church to live up to. Amongst other things, it means that we accept people who do not agree with us –

but we commit ourselves to be respectful, and to learn from one another.

HIGHCLIFFE AMATEUR THEATRICAL SOCIETY (HATS) PANTOMIME 2019 “Cinderella” by Norman Robbins, presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. November 28th, 29th and 30th 2019. After our extremely successful last pantomime, Babes in the Woods, we are pleased to announce that our panto this year will be “Cinderella”. Cinderella is a very well known fairy tale that has been a part of our history. Generations have enjoyed the traditional story of how good triumphs over bad. Everyone loves a happy ending when things have been difficult. Poor Cinderella finds herself at the bottom of the pecking order when her father the Baron, marries again and also becomes step father to 2 rather difficult step daughters. Cinderella’s best friend Buttons who is secretly in love with her, does his best to protect her and look after her as does her father. However, his new wife and her daughters, Asphyxia and Euthanasia are very cruel to Cinderella, clearly jealous of her beauty, generous nature and natural charm. Cinderella manages to rise above these obstacles and her beauty is noticed by the Prince who sets out to find her and secure their future together after meeting her at the Ball. Cinderella is so happy at finding true love, that she forgives her wicked step mother and step sisters for how they have treated her, she welcomes them with open arms as they all become part of a happy family and celebrate together.
The Charnwood Gardener It Ain’t Over Yet
There is a distinct moment, sometime in mid-September, when the realisation hits that autumn is almost upon us. Perhaps it’s the quality of the light: the bright white of summer cooling to a subdued golden hue. Or maybe it’s the sudden desire to dig out the chunkier jumpers from the back of the wardrobe. Or the startling and perverse sight of Christmas tat already in the shops. Depending on your disposition, these signs of the season may be cause for melancholy (where did the summer go?) or celebration (bonfires and muddy walks!), but if you’re a gardener you’ll know that the fun is far from over.
Kale is hardy enough to over-winter
Autumn is a magical window in which to plot, plan and play – the garden becomes the alchemist’s crucible from which the old becomes the new. Here’s some inspiration for this enchanting time of year: • It’s an ideal time to lift and divide herbaceous plants. Is that clump of globe thistles (Echinops) getting too big for its boots? Turn one plant into three and add some visually-pleasing repetition to the border. • Don’t let the veg patch sit there doing nothing all winter. The soil is still warm and hardy veg like kale, chard and purple-sprouting broccoli will get going in no time. Sow direct and fill the space!
Come along and join in with this traditional fairy tale, and you too will be protective of Cinderella. Hissing and booing at the baddies is encouraged, so do your best to make sure Cinderella knows how much you all love her.
• As you start to cut back in the borders, think about winter structure. Could you leave some of the sturdier growth until spring? Fennel, teasel, Phlomis, Verbena – the seed heads of these all look beautiful touched with winter frost and stop the garden being entirely flat for four months of the year.
Are you getting in the mood. Want to hear some more. Then make sure you book your tickets and come and see our fine cast, in their fine costumes, at our fabulous venue, Birstall Social Club. See you soon.
OCTOBER TIP: With the ground nice and moist, now’s a good time to re-edge the borders. Using a decent half-moon edging spade, carefully cut tidy lines (or curves) into the lawn and lift (from the border side) with a fork. Done well it transforms the appearance of the garden.
Dates: Thursday November 28th 2019 and Friday November 29th 2019 at 7.15 p.m. Saturday November 30th 2019 at 2.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance Venue: Birstall Social Club, 16-18 Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS Tickets: £7.00, £6.00 concession, £23 family ticket.(2 adults and 2 children) Discount for group bookings of 10 or more people (price available at time of booking). Community groups urged to contact local councillors about grant funding Community groups in Charnwood are being urged to contact their local councillor to help them access grant funding for projects. The member grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council and enables each borough councillor to award up to £1,000 to projects in their ward each year. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council said: “The member grants scheme helps spread funding to projects right across Charnwood, in each ward. “We want to encourage groups who are making a positive contribution to their community to contact their local councillor about the grants.” The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners has been awarded a total of £750 from three different councillors. The funding has been used towards carving a story telling seat from a dead standing oak tree in Forest Road. The seat has been created in memory of Loughborough in Bloom stalwart Harry Cook. Cllr Richard Bailey, who represents the Outwoods ward and awarded £250 to the project said “The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners help to maintain a wonderful green space in my ward which I know is appreciated by many residents. “Harry Cook was well thought of in the local community and I was happy to support this project with part of my grant to create a lasting feature on the greenbelt in Harry’s memory. “The member grants scheme is a fantastic opportunity for councillors to find out more about the work community groups do in the local area and support them by awarding them with some funding.” Harry’s widow Pat said: “The story telling seat was always one of Harry’s dreams. I’m pleased we’ve been able to make it happen with the help of the member grants scheme. “I was so overwhelmed by the support of the local community, schools, local business’ and Charnwood Borough Council. A total of £8,436 was raised through the Spacehive crowd funding platform in conjunction with the idverde community investment fund for the project.
New Dementia support group is launched at Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation Earlier this year registered charity Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation launched a new dementia support group for behaviours that challenge. Helen Baxter Activities Coordinator at the Foundation said ‘changes in behaviour can be one of the most difficult aspects of living with dementia, both for the person with the condition and those around them’ She added ‘Challenging behaviours usually happen when a person is feeling confused or distressed and trying to make sense of what is happening around them – our new support group aims to offer individually tailored activities for people living with dementia together with their partners, friends or carers’ The group will meet on the third Thursday of the month - 1.30pm-3.00pm at Ulverscroft Activity Centre. The new social group is for people under 75 years of age living with dementia with behaviours that challenge, together with their partners, friends or carers. For more information regarding the sessions please telephone Kathleen Wass on 07860 639693
In Praise of Grandparents! SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER is ‘Grandparents Day’. Grandparents in the UK number about 17 million, or more than one in four of the adult population. Grandparents average out at 68 years of age, have four grandchildren who live 10 miles away, and who spend five hours per visit. Grandparents have multiple roles as their grandchildren grow up: playmates, teachers, confidants, spiritual guides, mentors, role models and nurturers, as well as pray-ers. They also can keep children’s milestones, family history and family events alive. Grandchildren will often discuss their personal concerns with a trusted grandparent. Grandparents are also important for the UK economy! Nine million of them looked after their grandchildren in 2017. On average they did so for 8 hours a week, 96% received no payment.

NOT LONG Birstall Parish Council’s Christmas LEFT FOR hamper cheer for senior residents BARGAIN WILL WRITING With the Campaign ending next month, the ‘phone lines at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are buzzing, with hundreds of older people wanting to make sure that they do not miss out on the annual Will Writing Promotion organised by the Charity. Twenty-seven offices of local solicitors have kindly agreed to reduce their Will Writing charge to just £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will, but the offer runs only until the end of October. This price represents a saving of more than £100 in most cases. Commenting, the Business Development Manager of the local Age UK, Peter Ralphs, said: “We are delighted that so many people have responded to the promotion. Many older people have never been to a solicitor before, with some feeling intimidated at the prospect. The special offer has acted as an incentive and given many people the confidence they have needed to put their affairs in order – ensuring that those who will benefit from their estate are the people they most care for. Some have even been kind enough to include much-needed legacies or given donations to our charity, though there is no pressure so to do.” Anyone wishing to take advantage of the Will Writing Promotion should contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to find out the names of the Solicitors participating in the scheme in their local area on 0116 2992233.
Many years ago, Birstall Parish Council were Trustees of a local charity that has now ceased to exist. The charity was set up to meet the needs of the elderly and needy in the village and when the Charity closed its accounts, the Parish Council decided to continue with this initiative and they honoured the beneficiary list by making sure that they all received the gift of a Christmas Hamper. Over the last few years the beneficiary list has naturally declined, and Parish Councillors decided that this heart-warming initiative should continue. They all agreed that Christmas time is a time for giving and thinking of others and that this gesture captures the very essence of the season, as it spreads joy to some of the most vulnerable people in the Parish.
They decided to develop and grow the list up to a maximum of twenty beneficiaries each year and they are asking for your help by seeking nominations from the community to enable them to continue to do this in December 2019. The Parish Council are asking for you to nominate someone who is over 70 years of age that you feel deserves some Christmas Cheer. The nomination form is available to collect from the Parish Council offices or you can download a copy from the Parish Council's website: www.birstallparishcouncil.org.uk Please return your completed nomination forms to the Parish Clerk by post or by hand to the Parish Council Offices on Birstall Road or email: admin@birstallpc.org.uk Receipt will be acknowledged and confirmation given on whether or not your nomination meets the criteria and that it has been included on the Beneficiary List. Nominations will close on 31 October each year to enable the hampers to be ordered and prepared ready for delivery the following December. We look forward to hearing from you

ST. JAMES MONDAY GROUP With all the lovely fine weather we have had in the past couple of months, it really was a bit rotten that the day of the coffee morning kindly hosted by one o four Monday Group members turned out to be one of the wettest! And with a gazebo in the garden sheltering books and plants. But despite the inclement weather a good number of people turned out to support our cause and the boiler was in continual use for teas and coffees, and so it turned into a very successful morning. There is another coffee morning planned, to be held by another of our members, but the date is yet to be decided upon. Friday 30th August was our coach outing to Lincoln for the day, then September sees us back at our usual venue in the Age Concern rooms of the Village Hall, where we are always happy to meet visitors and new members. We meet on the 2nd Monday of every month at 7.30 p.m. If you would like further information (or encouragement) please call our leader, Jane Scott, on 0116 2673761. She would be very happy to talk to you.

Recycling simplified across Leicestershire District councils in Leicestershire have joined forces to make recycling easier than ever by providing a more consistent recycling service for Leicestershire residents. The majority of county residents are now able to recycle exactly the same materials in their recycling wheelie bins wherever they live in the county. Six district councils have worked together to produce one simple list of what can and cannot be put into the recycling bin. It is hoped that not only will this offer better consistency for residents countywide, but that it will also encourage residents to recycle more things, more often. A complete list of items that can be recycled can be seen at: www.lesswaste. org.uk/items-accepted-for-recycling-atcasepak/ Until recently, when recycling bins were emptied by crews in each council area, the contents were taken to several different recycling sites for sorting. Each recycling site had different rules and different processes which meant items that could be recycled in some districts could not be recycled in others. That changed last year and now recycling collections from most districts - Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton and Oadby & Wigston - are now taken to a single materials recycling facility in Leicester which has enabled the councils to team up for the first time. Up to date information on what the recycling is used for is also available at www.lesswaste .org.uk Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts at Charnwood Borough Council said: “It’s important we make recycling as easy as possible to ensure residents in Charnwood can recycle as much as possible. “I’m pleased we’ve been able to work with other district councils in Leicestershire to produce a single list and hope residents will take time to look at the list of what can be put in their green recycling bin.” Beverley Jolly, joint chief executive of Harborough District Council and Leicestershire districts’ lead on waste said: "It's been a source of some frustration to Leicestershire residents for some time that items that can be recycled by some councils cannot be recycled by others. "It's also an issue that WRAP, the national waste and resources action programme, is keen to tackle as their research says that inconsistency leads to confusion and puts people off recycling so we were keen to work together to produce a single list for recycling that applies countywide. "We really hope this will make recycling easier than ever for Leicestershire residents, leading to more recycling and less waste going to landfill.”
The White Horse receives a community Heros award from Charwood Borough Council Scores of people who are dedicated to helping others have been honoured at the Charnwood Community Heroes 2019 awards. The event, organised by Charnwood Borough Council, celebrated the many positive contributions made by people, groups and businesses in the borough. They included people who are dedicated to helping scout groups, homeless people, the young and more mature, charities and many other local good causes. The event was supported by John Storer Charnwood, EEM Ltd, Sure Maintenance, Fosse 107 and KangarooUK. Cllr Deborah Taylor, the Council’s lead member for communities, said: “It was absolutely fantastic and inspiring to meet so many people who are committed to helping others. Charnwood Community Heroes is just a great way to say thank you to people. They don’t do what they do for any regards or plaudits but it is quite nice when someone says thank you and lets you know you are appreciated. And everyone at the awards are very appreciated. “There were many inspiring stories and it was great to see people enjoying the afternoon. I am sure many new relationships and networks were started and will further strengthen Charnwood’s community spirit. “Congratulations to all of our heroes and we look forward to next year’s event and celebrating more community heroes.” Charlotte Foy and Beccy Kay accepted the award on behalf of the White Horse. The business was nominated for the charity work and community focus by Birstall Councillor Shona Rattray. “We were very surprised to be nominated for this award, it was a lovely event and we were very pleased to have won an award. We really enjoy the Duck Race, the great Birstall Bake off and the other events we organise, they are very much at the heart of our business and us being part of our community in Birstall” said Charlotte Foy The event took place at John Storer House in Loughborough and guests were treated to an afternoon tea before the heroes were presented with certificates and chocolates. Other guests included leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jonathan Morgan; Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Brenda Seaton; Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan and Charnwood MP Ed Argar.

St Margaret's Seaside Bowls Tour The summer bowls tour has become a regular feature in the St Margaret's calendar. This year's destination was Weymouth where we enjoyed three days of superb unbroken sunny weather, exceptional for a British bank holiday weekend. We played against three local clubs, the first one being Greenhill, within walking distance of our hotel. As can be seen from the picture the green is directly on the seafront and gives unrivalled views along the sweep of Weymouth Bay. The second match was played at Weymouth & Melcombe which overlooks the harbour and marina. The third and final match was played at Portland Borstal which probably sounds worse than it was. The title is historic and it now has no connection with the young offenders institution. Their green is situated in a remote and exposed area of Portland. Each of the three matches offered a very different experience. All were played in a competitive but very friendly atmosphere and all were most enjoyable. On all three occasions we lost by a small margin. The award for the overall highest scoring player went to Chris Holmes (standing far right on the picture) for the second successive year. To sum up, it was a thoroughly enjoyable trip, with everyone looking forward to the next tour.

The Rothley Centre, 12, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, LE7 7PR. Members are free. Visitors £3. Ample free parking on site. For more information contact Jack Wootton on 07913129497.
