Cash For Your Community!
Leicestershire County Council has made available ÂŁ320,000 per year for local communities to invest in local improvements of their choice. The funding is available through the 25 Community Forums. This Community Forum Budget is not a regular grant fund, because local residents are involved in all aspects of the process and they will be making the decision which projects should receive a share of the funds.
€ € € ‚ ƒ € Â? Â?Â?Â?  Â? Â
Community groups can put forward project ideas for which they are seeking funding. All those project proposals are then made available on the forum's website so residents can view and comment on them. The community groups and other local residents then come together for a Decision Night to discuss the projects and vote for their favourites. All proposals will benefit from advice by a panel of experts, including advice on further sources of funding.

POLICEMATTERS
Welcome to this months Police Matters from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime figures for the month of MARCH can only be classed as a bit of a ‘mixed bag’. Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in crimes including burglaries and vehicle crime around the area.
Rest assured however, your Policing team will be maintaining their regular foot and mobile patrols to try and deter criminals from committing crime in Anstey. This dedication was epitomised recently by PC 2169 Gerwal who, by the wonders of mobile phone GPS, was able to record an amazing 19 miles of cycle patrols taking in every road in Anstey during just one shift! Combine our patrols with the now hundreds of residents who are registered in Neighbourhood Watch and we have a good coverage of the whole village with plenty of ‘eyes and ears’ everywhere. Even with this coverage however, we still do not want to ‘tempt’ the criminal by leaving items on show in vehicles and properties. One of the thefts from vehicle was the Sat Nav and cradle, which the owner thought he had put out of sight down the edge of his seat. Unfortunately this was seen and the ‘opportunist’ thief took his chance. Sadly our victim could not have seen the new signs in the village ‘Leave it on show expect it to go’. Don’t make it easy for criminals. Should you see any activity that you consider suspicious around vehicles then please call the Police on 101 or 999 if you feel a crime is actually taking place and the suspects may still be

at the scene. The activity could include:
• Looking into vehicles parked on the road or on driveways • Trying door handles • Crouching down besides or lying under parked vehicles • Interfering with vehicles – eg: wing mirrors, wiper blades, wheel trims etc.. On a positive note, a male has been arrested for the recorded theft from the Co-op Store. This male is currently remanded pending charges regarding this and other shop thefts around the city and county. Once again, excellent working relationships between the Co-op staff and Police enabled a quick arrest. I was expecting this month to offer some crime prevention advice regarding the warm days/nights and ensuring your home is secured – but the freezing cold weather put a stop to that! Here’s hoping April does pick up a little and we get some warmer weather and the snow finally disappears! If anybody has any information on crime they wish to pass then please call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens 2013 Richard Hill School PTA is urgently looking for willing volunteers to open their gardens for this year’s Open Gardens event! The chosen weekend is 29th and 30th June. The recent cold and wet weather seems to have made us all forget how lovely are gardens can be and we only have 5 gardens up to now. Maybe you have opened your garden every year so far, maybe you have once or twice or maybe you’re plucking up courage to do so! All gardens are welcome, big or small, simple or elaborate, immaculate or a little more ‘natural’! You don’t need to be the best gardener in Charnwood just be willing to share your treasured outdoor space with a very appreciative audience. Gardens in both villages will be open on both days. However, if you would like to open yours but are only able to do one day, that is not a problem. So if you would like to join in this year’s event by opening your garden, or you would like more information (or persuasion!), please get in touch with either of the organisers below. Or you can return the reply slip on the letter that should have been delivered to your house recently. More information and inspiration can be found on our website www.tcog.org.uk
Many thanks in anticipation of another enjoyable weekend. Linda 0116 2363872 - Jane 0116 2357980 Or you can email lindabennett1301@gmail.com
New houses for Anstey? During March residents of Bradgate Road and the Long Close area in Anstey received notification of plans for a development of up to 34 houses on land to the rear of Bradgate Road. The plans include the demolition of a house, to allow for a new access road. The estate would be built between the houses fronting Bradgate Road and the footpath that runs from Link Road towards Bradgate Park. Older residents may remember this as the previous site of the village cricket pitch. People using the footpath in the last couple of weeks will have noticed that many trees have already been cleared from the site, although the council has now put a stop on further felling and clearing. Not only residents of Bradgate Road should be concerned. This development will create further strains on local health and education resources, and result in a significant increase in traffic which will have to either pass through Anstey village centre or Newton Linford. The houses, if completed, would be visible from large areas of Bradgate Park, a place of national significance both historically and geologically. A group of residents are currently gathering information about these plans, which will shortly be formally presented to the Council. If you have concerns and are interested in further information please contact – contactbradgate@btinternet.com or telephone 07791059816

Anstey WI
Anstey WI enjoyed a social evening when their speaker did not arrive, and could not be contacted. Four members who had been on an outing to the Tower of London, organised by the Leicestershire and Rutland Federations of Women’s Institutes, told of their experience. The weather was snowy, but everyone managed to get to the pick up point from all the villages, the coach driver did a sterling job, and everybody enjoyed the day. Anstey member Krystyna Killam wore her navy duffel coat with red trimming, because of the snow, and some visitors mistook her for a Yeoman Warder! She even claimed she could have made off with some of the crown jewels. We were not convinced by that. Heather Savage, who would have given a five minute talk at the members’ evening the previous month, had she been available, did so this time. She told of a holiday where on one evening the choice of entertainment was “The Magic of the Beatles” or a burlesque show. Since the Beatles option meant braving torrential rain to reach a different building, most of the predominantly elderly people chose the burlesque show. Striptease dancers were met with dead silence instead of the encouragement that was urged on the audience. Luckily the performer who had the audience throw knives at him while he balanced on a plank, on a roller, on a table, managed to catch them all, and there were no heart attacks. Perhaps the meeting would have been less entertaining if the expected speaker had arrived. Who knows?

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello again everybody. Ah doesn’t life feel so much better when the clocks go forward; a sign that lighter nights and warmer days are just around the corner. Hope you all had a good and peaceful Easter, with plenty of Easter eggs? Not been to good health wise myself hence the reason you won’t be finding my name on your ballot papers at the forthcoming Leicestershire County Council elections to be held on May 2nd. However that doesn’t stop me continuing my duties as a Charnwood Borough Councillor for Anstey until at least 2015 when once again the District council elections will be taking place, and all being well I shall look forward to standing again, for Anstey. NEW PLAY AREA? Yes there is one at the top of Long Close off Bradgate Road in Anstey. This was officially opened by the Mayor of Charnwood Cllr Diane Wise on a cold March afternoon. I did attend the opening ceremony along with others of varying ages, but wasn’t allowed to go on any of the swings or the climbs!! ☹☹. This new feature for all the village youngsters is from money negotiated in a developer agreement made with David Wilson homes. The cost for the new play area was well over £60,000. It’s a bit of a trek for some of you kids but well worth the effort. Bring yourself and your friends but No paint spray cans thank you. Due to good schools around we all know our children are very well educated but please keep all your writing and designs in your school books, at School. It’s yours kids so look after it. ☺ BENEFIT CHANGES! NEED MORE HELP? Charnwood Borough Council knows that these changes will have an impact on some residents and is here to offer help and advice. In cases of extreme hardship, the Council can
offer a Council Tax Discretionary Discount which offers short-term help to those suffering severe hardship as a result of welfare changes. The Council Tax Discretionary Discount is a County-wide agreement funded by local authorities, Leicestershire County Council, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. It is a fundamental part of the Local Council Tax Support Schemes in Leicestershire and is designed to support people who would otherwise suffer severe financial hardship. Important Discretionary Discount notes: 1. The discount is applicable for Council Tax only 2. Applicants do not have to be in receipt of Council Tax Support 3. No cash payments are made, it is a discount on the Council Tax Bill 4. The amount of discount given will be subject to individual applicant circumstances 5. The application is processed by the billing authority 6. The discount is not an emergency payment, or cash payment. Discretionary Payments by the Council If you are in receipt of Housing Benefit or Local Council Tax Support (Council Tax Benefit – before 1st April 2013) and are suffering from severe financial hardship you can apply ONLINE for a Discretionary Payment in order to help with your Rent/Housing Costs and/or your Council Tax Bill. For more information about discretionary payments visit our Housing Benefit and Local Council Tax Support Discretionary Payments web page. Contacts

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHES. We seem to be getting more of these forming throughout Charnwood which is good for the safety of all. However we could, so I am told be a little more proactive in Anstey. Be a good watchful neighbour, get involved and help keep us all that little bit safer. Yes it takes a bit of time and effort to set one up but help is at hand to get one started. For more information phone “101” or why not go to the next beat surgery at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Rd, Anstey when PCSO Phil Wright can tell you more. Thursday 7pm April 25th. 2013. Debbie who lives around the Rosebery Road area of Anstey is doing her bit to keep us clean and tidy by picking up various recycling items and getting rid of them in the RIGHT places. Her mum Diane tells me that Debbie walks around Rosebery Road, Link Road, Cropston Road and the Recreation ground with a pushchair with her sister’s dog in it, collecting all tin cans, and also bottles which she takes to the recycle bins in the Car park. take place in the near future. If you want to “HAVE YOUR SAY” please get in touch with Clive Hodges at County Hall. 0116 3050001. email:- Engineering.Design@leics.gov.uk I believe that this area is in need of some traffic calming measures but I am not a believer in the car wrecking speed tables, chicanes or something similar are much more car friendly and still slow you down! We could also do with some deregulating of of the double yellow lines on Bradgate Road to ease the on street parking situation for local residents and worshippers at both the United Reformed and St Mary’s Churches, now that the old Plough Inn car park is being developed. BRADGATE ROAD DEVELOPMENT. Another proposal for yet more houses in Anstey off Bradgate Road behind 237, which if my predecessors’ on Anstey parish council had spent around £30 way back in the 1950’s, could have been the home of Anstey Cricket Club. This piece of land has now had a pre- application put to residents for 34 new dwellings. An exhibition was held at 237 and was very well attended. At the time of writing we are awaiting an official application to go into Charnwood Borough Council planning. But it makes you wonder WHY it never became a village cricket pitch. (Too much money so I was told!!) Things could have been so much different... Sigh.

If you have a project and need some extra funding get your application form filled in and sent in before NOON on May 31st. 2013. To apply for funding or to take part in the decision night on June 27th. Visit www.leicestershireforums.org or call 0116 3057034. Your proposal could get you up to a maximum of £5,000. Don’t miss out. And finally... MISS REDFERN’S CLASS 1932-33. Can you help? My mother Barbara Sutherington nee (Junemann) as lost a much treasured photo of her and many old school friends including Tom Tonks and Keith Smith. Someone somewhere must still have a copy tucked away in a dusty photo album. It was taken at what looks like Latimer Street School, Anstey and my mother would have been about 5 years old at the time. It would cheer her up no end if a copy could be found as she is once again poorly and back in hospital. Here’s to warm sunny days, the lighter nights and the thwack of willow on leather with the start of the new cricket season. Maybe even Leicester City FC in the play offs Hmm ?? Always willing to help anyone with a problem please get in touch. Cllr JJS.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
On Monday 8th April, fortunately the weather turned for the better and although very cold, sported a great deal of sunshine which encouraged Members to come along to listen to a fascinating illustrated talk about “The History, Creation and Beauty of Glass”. Our Speaker was Mr. Derek Holloway, who had previously spoken to us about the life of Clarice Cliff, the famous pottery creator. Mr. Holloway chose four famous glass creators on which to base the subject i.e. Venetian, Whitefriars, Rene Jules Lalique and John Ditchfield. The history of glass goes back to 3500 BC and has been produced in different forms through each century. The basic ingredients were displayed as a Delia Smith Recipe for easier understanding and were composed of Silicon Sand, Sodium Carbonate, and Calcium Oxide and when mixed, were “cooked” at 2300 or 4172 degrees Fahrenheit or much less with the addition of Sodium Oxide. Variations were mixed to achieve i.e Lead Chrystal to achieve weight and sparkle and further ingredients to achieve light and colour i.e. Iron Oxide for Green and Sulphur for Yellow. Beautiful examples of the above Creators were displayed together with hints and wrinkles on how to recognise the genuine article from the fakes, which present difficulties for recognition for even the Experts!! Mr. Holloway also advised that the removal of labels or any other markings of authenticity, would prove disastrous in the valuation, with the possibility of a loss of a great deal of money to the owner on resale or auction as witnessed on TV programmes such as Antiques Road Show. This was a fascinating talk and the Membership appreciated the depth of details appertaining to the creators, far too many to mention here. As Mr. Holloway has other subjects to share with us, we shall invite his return next year.

In April's film, "The Lady", we saw an Oxford housewife and mother of two teenage boys return to her motherland of Burma where she peacefully led a democracy movement, even tirelessly campaigning among the northern tribes. We were relieved to see her win the Nobel Peace Prize. “Quartet” will be shown on Friday May 10th and lasts 145 minutes. Starring Dame Maggie Smith, this wickedly comic film is about redefining old age with aspirations. It demonstrates how music can illuminate life. Four retired opera singers celebrate Verdi’s birthday by endeavouring to perform an operetta at their retirement home.

The ABC of Breastfeeding The Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group is hoping the general public will help to spread the word about the benefits of breastfeeding by attending an Advocating Breastfeeding In Charnwood (ABC) workshop. The workshop will help people become an advocate for breastfeeding within the Charnwood area. It will give enough information to ensure attendees are confident in talking about breastfeeding so that more people are aware of the importance of it to the health of babies and their mothers. The event is on Friday 24th May from 10am to midday at Mountsorrel Children’s Centre. It will include common breastfeeding myths and how to dispel them, an honest discussion about the advantages, a look at the science behind breastfeeding and how to direct people to find more information and support if required. Only Charnwood residents are invited (or those who work exclusively in Charnwood) but there are no other restrictions on who can attend. Men and women of all ages are invited, whether they are parents or not. The Charnwood BRAS are hoping that as well as parents and grandparents, those working in childcare, teaching and appropriate health care settings will attend. Liz Blackshaw from Mountsorrel is one of the Charnwood BRAS volunteers who is organising the event. She says “We hope this session helps people become more confident in talking about breastfeeding, not so that they become experts but so they can spread the word so more babies can benefit from breast milk for longer”.
ge 8To book a place on the workshop, telephone the Charnwood BRAS on 07583 041054. The group also runs antenatal workshops and returning to work sessions.
For more details visit www.charnwoodbras.co.uk or find the group on Facebook.
Old Woodhouse Open Gardens – 18th May & 19th May Having taken a 3 year break to re-charge the batteries the residents of Old Woodhouse are again opening their gardens to visitors. The previous event was very successful and raised a substantial sum for charity; money raised at this year’s event will similarly benefit local charities. As well as the opportunity to view some beautiful gardens there will be refreshments available and also plant stalls. Nine private gardens will be open for viewing together with the St Mary’s Church and Beaumanor Hall Gardens. Teas will be served at the Community Hall and two of the private gardens. Entry passports can be purchased either at Woodhouse Eaves Newsagents, the Garden Planter shop at Woodhouse Eaves or on the day at the Community Hall and at selected gardens. The cost is £3 per person; children will be free but must be accompanied by a paying adult. The gardens will be open from 2.0pm to 6.0pm. Parking will be at the Beaumanor Hall main car park. The Community Hall car park will be reserved for disabled parking and as a drop off point for the disabled.

Badger Baiting Discovered in the Charnwood Forest The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust have recently discovered evidence of badger baiting in the Charnwood Forest near Coalville. A badger sett was discovered which had been dug out and then refilled. The disturbed soil contained badger fur which indicated that one or more badgers may have been killed. Badger baiting has been illegal for over 170 years due the horrendous suffering caused to badgers and the dogs used to bait them. Badgers are normally caught in their setts by blocking the exits and then sending a dog in to corner the badger. The baiters dig down to find the badger. This can often mean digging a hole over 6ft deep. Once found the badger is maimed in order to prevent it killing the dogs too quickly. This usually takes the form of breaking the badger's jaw or legs with a shovel. The badger is then thrown back into the hole or taken to a prepared location and one or more dogs are set on it in a fight to the death. A spokesman for the Trust said "This is a shocking discovery. This sort of sick blood sport should not have a place in modern life. Unfortunately the people that do this think that digging a wild animal out of the ground, maiming it and watching it fighting dogs is entertainment. To every sane person this would be deemed to be abhorrent. The types of individuals that do this are serious violent criminals. We would urge people to be vigilant when out in the countryside and to report any suspicious activity to the police." The RSPCA and Police have been contacted and photographic evidence was taken at the scene. The sett in question and those in the surrounding area have been put under regular surveillance and remote cameras will be deployed in the near future. The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust are asking people to be vigilant and report suspicious activity including: • People carrying spades (sometimes fold away spade in bags or rucksacks) when out walking. • People taking small terrier type dogs near badger setts. Look out for radio collars on the dogs as they use this to locate the dog in the sett. • Any signs of recent digging activity on a badger sett.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE!! The Challenge: - A 22 mile circular route taking in 2 Scout campsites – John Lees Wood, Newtown Linford and Oaks in Charnwood, the highest point in Leicestershire – Bardon Hill, Mount St Bernard’s Abbey and plenty of Leicestershire Countryside Who: - 13 Scouts aged 10 – 13 years old & 2 leaders and one very brave parent from 77th Bradgate Scout Troop based at Richard Hill School, Thurcaston When: - Saturday 16 March 2013 9.30am Starting in pouring rain from the Bradgate Car Park in Newtown Linford, carrying our overnight kit of sleeping bags, clothes & rations we set off towards John Lees Wood at a brisk pace to get warm. By lunchtime we had reached our first goal, Bardon Hill, where we stopped to take in much needed food and fluids The Scouts ready for the off! and a well-earned break to enjoy the views just as the sun came out. During our lunch break 5 younger members of our happy band were invested into the Scout Troop. After 6½ hours, passing the Abbey along the way, we reached our destination of the Oaks Campsite where we stayed the night. Having dried off, we set about cooking our evening meal, after which, with our bellies full, all of us were ready for bed without any complaints. On the 2nd day, after a hearty breakfast, 8 scouts were ready to start the leg home. Leaving our 5 injured (Blisters) and exhausted comrades behind, we left the Oaks with the sun on our backs, which made a pleasant change from the day before. But it didn’t last. By the time we reached our first objective of the day, Beacon Hill, it was snowing! Having lunched under a large tree within the Beacon Hill Country Park Grounds, slipping and sliding on very wet and muddy grounds, we made our way towards Old John, singing some of our favourite campfire songs to keep up our spirits. As we entered Bradgate Park, we turned right for home and as we came over the hill the Car park in Newtown Linford was a very welcome sight, especially as our parents were there waving to welcome us back. So after 5 hours, 10 miles we had made it back, wet, muddy and exhausted, but very pleased with ourselves for completing a very challenging Challenge.

Children’s hospice calls on walkers Plea for more men! Walk of Life The Anstey Players who meet on Friday evenings are looking for more actors to join them, especially men.
If you are free on Fridays and would like to have a go at treading the boards, or helping out in the background, please contact us soon as possible. Our next play, a comedy called ‘Cheshire Cats’ will be performed at the U.R.C. in Anstey from the 6th to the 8th June, with hopefully an extra charity performance on Wednesday 5th June. The play is about five women who have a girlie weekend away in L ondon and speedwalk the London Moonwalk raising money and awareness for Breast Cancer.
What should be a funny, moving and emotional play which will make you laugh, proceeds from the raffle on each night will go to a Breast Cancer charity. For more information about tickets or to join our friendly group, please contact Terrie on 07939 109162 or 0116 287 6322 asap please.
People are being urged to pull on their walking boots and raise vital funds for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Rainbows is staging its annual sponsored Walk of Life on Sunday 19 May, as part of Children’s Hospice Week*, and is calling on the people of Leicestershire to sign up. Starting at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, on Grace Road, walkers can take on a 15 mile trek or a gentler five mile amble around the city and surrounding countryside. More than 700 people took part in the event last year raising £45,000 for the Loughboroughbased hospice. Many of the walkers dressed as their favourite super hero or brought their dogs along which made a fantastic sight around the streets of Leicester. This year, organisers hope to attract 800 walkers and smash last year’s figure.
Katie Baxter, community and events manager at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, said: “The Walk of Life is one of our most fun events. With the choice of two routes, there really is something for everybody and we hope that as many people as possible sign up to help us raise funds.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Our March meeting was called ‘Pruning Made Simple’. So; pruning – ‘hairdresser or butcher’? That was the question posed by our guest speaker, Geoff Hodge. Geoff is a very experienced gardener, has been a garden centre manager, and now writes books for the RHS and for gardening magazines.
Geoff started his talk by explaining about pruning equipment, and had with him a full range of kit to talk about and demonstrate. The most important thing about pruning equipment is that it must be sharp and clean – sharp to get a clean cut (sharpen every time you use) and clean to prevent cross infection. When it comes to pruning you need a reason to prune and Geoff talked about the 4 Ds – dead, damaged, dying and diseased. Another reason to prune is where a variegated shrub is reverting to green. But perhaps the main reason is to maximise a plants ability to produce flowers. Indeed, deadheading to keep plants flowering is a form of pruning. Geoff also talked about when to prune. This depends on the plant, for example, whether it flowers in spring, summer or autumn. He also talked about pruning some groups of plants such as clematis. So, hairdresser or butcher? A ‘hairdresser’ prunes very lightly as opposed to a ‘butcher’ who prunes hard and deep. Geoff argued that gardeners get better results, with the exception of some plants, if they become ‘butchers’ when pruning. This was an excellent, interactive ‘master class’ talk. Geoff had an extremely relaxed and chatty style to his talk and demonstration. It was very informative but also humorous. The group of 40 members and visitors who braved the weather to attend, enjoyed his style and there was a lot of laughter throughout the evening. There was also a lot of interest in the topic with lots of questions for Geoff to answer. The next club events are:Sat 27th April – Outing to the Harrogate Spring Show At the time of writing, this visit is almost full – just a few tickets remaining. Wed 8th May, 7.45 pm – Sempervivums and Hardy Sedums – Paul Street An introduction to the beauty of these popular plants. Cultivation, care and propagation. The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try. FILMREVIEW Iron Man 3 - Out 25th April
Iron Man 3 is the latest installment in the hit series with explosive effects that take it to the next level. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) – in his role as Iron Man – is trying to track down and wreak his revenge on those who have tried to destroy him and has ended up against his deadliest enemy yet, the devious Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). But just as important as the battle with the enemy is the battle within and his whole relationship with the Iron Man in the mirror. Iron Man 3 is that rare thing: a highly intelligent movie with plenty of big-bang action.
Scary Movie 5 - 15 Scary Movie V is a delicious Mickey-take on the Paranormal Activity movies with some Black Swan jokes thrown in for good measure. When a young couple brings their newborn baby back to their house, they start to notice some strange things going on and suspect supernatural activity. They install cameras and employ the services of a paranormal expert (who seems to be stealing their stuff) in order to get to the bottom of things before their careers are ruined. Scary Movie V is as mental as you would expect with cameos from the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Heather Locklear and Mike Tyson.
Why a cluttered desk could mess up your whole life Never mind hard work and perseverance: have you tidied your desk lately? A clear desk will help free your internal world, and make you more successful. So says an expert, who warns that “clutter in your outer environment is the physical manifestation of all the clutter that is going on inside of you. Clearing clutter has a ripple effect across your entire life, including your work.” Jayne Morris is the resident life coach for NHS online, and she goes on to warn that “the things you are holding on to that you don’t really like, don’t ever use, and don’t need any more.... things that no longer fit or serve you, drain your energy.” Scans have confirmed that victims of hoarding disorder have abnormal activity in regions of the brain involved in decision making. A survey has shown that more than a million people in the UK are compulsive about keeping their possessions.

The Martin High School... Update on the New Build……….. Over a period of just 4 days starting on Friday 1st March Yorkon erected 8 new classrooms. A 350 tonne truck delivered 8 classrooms in 14 parts. It went extremely well and the new build is of a very high standard. This will give us the extra space to facilitate the schools future changes. The school will be retaining the Martin High School name, however, the uniform will be having a long awaited makeover. We had 170 designs from our pupils. The student council then carefully selected the best 15 ideas for the whole school to vote on. The votes have been counted and the most popular idea has received over 70% of the votes. Our next task is to work with manufacturers, governors and parents to look at the cost of making the new uniform and a time frame for rolling it out.

MURDER IN THE LIBRARY This was a lunchtime activity in March were the students were asked to be budding Miss Marple’s or Poirot’s and do a spot of CSI by using the books in the library to find the clues as to who was the murderer. Winners of the ‘Murder in the Library Quiz’
The Martin High School in partnership with Anstey Parish Council is shortly to survey the community within the school’s catchment area and a little beyond (Anstey, Glenfield, Thurcaston, Cropston and Newtown Linford). The survey will ask the community what activities and facilities they ideally would want to have and use within their community. We are jointly looking towards developing a much improved community programme which could include a range of activities including arts, performance, ICT, technology, food and cooking and sporting facilities. We know that the School and the parish can currently provide some of these facilities. The survey is the first step towards identifying the demand for these and for improving current facilities. Without this survey we cannot bid for further government funding towards developing community and sports facilities. Please do take time to complete the survey and return it to the Martin High School. It will appear shortly in’ Your Local’ paper and can be downloaded from the school website. Sporting Achievements………. On Thursday 21st February our years 7, 8 and 9 netball teams and years 7 and 8 football teams visited Castle Donington School for a Charnwood League Fixture. The years 7 and 9 netball teams lost 4-3 and 9-2 respectively and the year 8 team won convincingly 25-0. The year 7 Football team drew 44 and the year 8 team won 4-0. This week our year 7 and 8 rugby team beat Stonehill 24-0 and the year 9 rugby team also beat Stonehill 36-0. All of our football teams beat Shepshed: year 7, 6-0, year 8, 6-0 and year 9, 6-1. The year 7 and 8 netball teams also played Shepshed and won 2-1 and 10-1 respectively. The year 9's lost to Shepshed 8-6. Year 9 especially were fantastic. Jack Woolman was man of the match. On Wednesday 13th March MHS took 4 teams (year 7 boys, year 7 girls, year 8 boys & year 8 girls) to the South Charnwood Sports Hall Athletics Competition at Wreake Valley. All four of our teams performed fantastically and went onto win each of their respective categories. This meant that the following students represented the MHS at The County Finals at South Charnwood School Games, Loughborough University on Friday 22nd March: Year 7: Georgia Peden 7G, Ria Acton 7M, Millie Sheard 7G, Bryony Large 7R, Chloe-Jo Page 7R, Sian Hickman 7R, Riley Cliff 7A, Charlie McGlinchey 7I, Jay Broome 7G, Joe Pickering 7G, Matt Howse 7M. Year 8: Molly Mee 8R, Mollie Smith 8N, Megan Kenney 8A, Magenta Spence-Ward 8G, Pandora Holladay 8T, Harry Bradley 8T, Joe Knight 8T, Ed Partis 8T, Jack Bowerbank 8H, Reece Lefley 8I, Kyle Hayes 8A. The prize for both Katie and Elliot was either a £5 ‘Love to Shop’ Voucher or a book of their choice. The Library also held quizzes on March 7th in aid of World Book Day. The winners were awarded with either a £5 ‘Love to Shop’ voucher or a book of their choice. Red Nose Day……………. We managed to raise £750 and counting by various activities which included non uniform day, red nose cakes and biscuits, sponsored silence, car washing, The Harlem Shake with over 400 students participating, and a disco in the evening. Holgate Wood Development…… During three weeks in March several of our students along with Tim Atkins, Woodland Developer, were hard at work creating pathways and re-cycling some of the excess soil taken from the new build to create habitats to encourage wildlife, bluebells and foxgloves have also been planted... Unfortunately fly tipping still remains a problem, however, since the perimeter fence has been repaired, the dog fouling incidents have improved but there are still some people using the school field as a canine lavatory. This is directly jeopardizing the health of our students. At least one dog owner has used bolt croppers to break the fence and another to drill through the metal picket fencing. This is anti social and criminal activity. Normandy Trip…….. 42 pupils went to Normandy for 5 days in March on a combined French/History trip were they visited the D Day landing beaches, Pegasus Memorial, Arromanches, The Bayeux Tapestry, Omaha Beach and other various culture related activities.

APRIL’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW NEW AREAS COVERED I would like to welcome the residents of Balladine Road (Wendy Oxman), Bencroft Close (Kay Calvert), Edward Street (Susan Marlow), George Street (James Mately), Holgate Close & Netherfield Road (Rob Boneham) to the Anstey NHW. The co-ordinators names are in brackets. I hope those who attended the welcome meeting found it both informative & helpful. I am very disappointed that nobody from Birkdale Road or Hazelhead Road has come forward to be a coordinator. To get your scheme registered and for you to get the benefits of being a member of a NHW scheme, John Dowling has very kindly offered to be the TEMPORARY COORDINATOR. This is not an ideal solution as it is a lot better for the coordinator to actual live near their scheme. If anyone else is interested in setting up a scheme in your area and becoming a coordinator please let me know. Being in a NHW scheme, helps to bring communities together, and helps towards a safer area to live. COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH This is taking place on Bradgate Road, Cropston Road and now Link Road from Monday 15th April to Sunday 28th April. Volunteers to operate the speed cameras are needed and there will be a training session at 7:00 pm on Friday 12th April in Jubilee Hall – please come along if you’re interested. If you can’t make it, please let me know and I will pass your information on to the organisers. LEICESTERSHIRE NORTH NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION AGM This will again be held in Anstey, on the 29th May at the Jubilee Hall starting at 7.30 pm. Everyone is very welcome to attend. There will be 2 speakers. The first speaker will be someone from the FIRST RESPONDER SCHEME, I don’t have the name of the other speaker yet but will let you know in next month’s article. WARMER WEATHER WARNING With hopefully the warmer weather approaching can I please remind everyone to be very security minded when leaving windows and doors open, especially when you are leaving your property. Please remember to close all windows and doors, especially downstairs windows before going to bed. Most of the burglaries in the summer are opportunist - don’t become a victim. Newtown Linford Gardening Club What a wonderful thing nature is. These two photos show the same plant less than a month apart. The icicles formed when water dripped from our roof on to the plant during the most recent period of snow and ice and other photo shows the flowers coming out on the same branches now the weather has warmed up. Spring may be somewhat late this year but we are clearly going to have one, and, who knows, it might just last into a pleasant and warm summer!!!!!! Our speaker on May 23rd is Hilary Hudson whose subject is ‘The World of Climbing Plants’. She is a very experienced speaker and lecturer and we are looking forward to her visit. The venue of our August visit was featured on Gardeners’ World earlier this month and looks a very attractive place. Ashwood Nurseries and John’s Garden in South Staffordshire are very close by and are well-known for their wide array of plants, some of which are not available in many garden centres. Several members have already booked their places on the trip and on this occasion we will be pleased to welcome non-members to join us. The date of that visit is August 20th. The visit of Christine Walkden on October 22nd is causing a lot of interest. Tickets are being ordered at a steady rate and we have had a lot of interest both from our members and from people who are members of other clubs but wish, on this occasion, to join us for this memorable evening. Tickets at £10 or membership for the year (£12) can be obtained by contacting the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net), or by coming to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you. Anne and David Couling

Beaumont Running Club welcomes new runners – no experience needed. Every spring Beaumont Running Club moves from its winter base in the city out to glorious Bradgate Park, meeting in the car park at Newtown Linford. We make the move on Monday 15th April this year. Whatever your ability we welcome you to join us. We have two levels of entry: Level One: We started a Beginners Group last year – and it has been a huge success. Our qualified leader takes new starters through loosening up and easy jog/walk stages - and helps them build up fitness and confidence until they can jog without stopping for a mile or more. This is a zero-pressure group though - if you still prefer to jog/walk at the end of the seven week course, that's fine. The group is structured so that everyone can develop at their own pace without losing touch. We charge just £2 a session with no minimum number of sessions – just pay as you go. You don't have to join Beaumont Running Club to take part in the Beginners' Group; but you have the option to join as a member at any time – and Club membership increased by 40% in 2012. Level Two: Established runners who have been training alone may be looking for help and motivation. That's what Beaumont Running Club is about - by training in small, friendly groups we help each other's pace and distance. Our membership includes a wide range of abilities - from some of Leicestershire's elite athletes to steady, chatty joggers. We compete (although it is by no means mandatory) in county road races and in cross country events. Training can include structured interval sessions - or evening runs through Bradgate Park and its surrounding countryside.
Beaumont Running Club meets at Newtown Linford car on Mondays and Thursdays (from 15th April bank holidays excluded). Start times: 6.30pm for beginners, 7pm for the main Club runs. For more ANING SERVICE information phone/text Andy Burnett on 07765 405794 or go via our website: beaumontrc.co.uk.
