Hello Beautiful Lawn

When we asked John what he loves about his job as a litter picker he said with a big smile on his face, "I love getting out walking in the fresh air and meeting the lovely people of Kirby Muxloe." John should get a medal for the good work he does keeping the village clean and tidy over these last ten years, but he would just say, “I am only doing my job.” So if you see John around the village please do say hello and give him a friendly smile, he will always return a smile and a wave of his stick.

John Benjamin Farrell with his granddaughter in the school holidays, showing her what his job entails. I bet her legs will be aching after a day with him, as he walks for miles. If you ever want to know where anything is, this is the man to ask. You may have seen him around the village in his bright yellow jacket carrying a bin liner and a stick, picking up the litter. He walks all the streets of Kirby Muxloe. He is a strong fit guy and you would never guess how old he was on 14th February, St Valentines day. 75!!! He has seen the village change over the last 10 years, he is the ears and eyes of the village and he's not afraid to tell the children when they are up to no good on the play equipment.

Come along and try as many delicious puddings as you would like whilst enjoying our easy listening band 'The Mowselberries'. There will also be a selection of cheese and biscuits. Coffee will be served or just enjoy a drink from the bar. Tickets are £7.50 and can be obtained by ringing 0116 2871758. All proceeds to Cancer Research UK for use in Leicester University Hospitals.

HEARTSAFE PROJECT On Friday the 28 February Cameron Oldershaw (Cj) and I (Lucy Armstrong) students of Groby Community College, went to the Leicester Tigers ground to attend the launch for Leicestershire’s Heartsafe project. This project is promoting the importance of CPR/Resuscitation training in schools. Each school in Leicestershire has been given a defibrillator/AED through the project funded by the 2 main charities supporting this project: Dr Skehan’s East midlands Pacemaker Fund and the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. Unfortunately Joe died whilst out running near his home in Rothley in October 2012; this was due to an undiagnosed heart problem. In the morning we listened to a presentation about the project and were told a few stories about what some of the cardiac arrest survivors had been through. I thought this was very interesting and it demonstrated that CPR is important and it can save lives. As one woman did CPR on a man she found unconscious for around 20 minutes and the man is now back to work as a GP with no brain damage. After the talk a lady fainted and everyone was escorted out of the room into the area that had all the CPR dummies in. We then watched a short clip and it showed us that you must go through a process called D.R.S.A.B.C. (Danger, Response, Shout for help, Airways, Breathing, CPR) in our groups we went and did different sections we firstly learnt how to do CPR and had to do 30 chest presses then 2 breaths. It was very hard work!! Then we went and learnt how a defibrillator works and where to put the patches, this was surprisingly easy as the defibrillator tells you what to do. After doing this we wandered around the displays and looked at the leaflets and posters to do with different aspects of CPR and cardiac treatment. Once we had a look at the different sections we had our photos taken with Martin Johnson (see right) and he signed a few of our posters. Cj and I then walked outside in the stands and looked around the pitch area. After the day was finished everybody went outside with our new defibrillators and had a photo taken. “Saving people is my strength” quoted Cj. Lucy Armstrong, Year 10 student at Groby Community College

The Story of Astill & Jordan

Leicestershire Cares

by Mick Gamble

I have been compiling a volume about the history of one of Leicestershire’s oldest private bus companies Astill and Jordan of Ratby, which operated a bus service starting in 1920 between Ratby and Leicester via Kirby Corner and Braunstone Cross Roads. In 1929 the service was altered to run through Glenfield entering Leicester via the Groby Road and in the mid-eighties services operated on a circular basis through the New Parks Estate.

Leicestershire Cares is organising another Coat Drive appeal in September 2014 and would like to hear from community and voluntary organisations who would like to receive coats for their clients.

Astill and Jordan ceased to operate after selling all vehicles and services to Wreake Valley Travel(Midland Fox) in November 1988.

The coats are donated by our member firms and the general public and checked for cleanliness and in working order. We collect children’s, men’s and women’s coats and are happy to pass them onto groups who work with people for whom a warm winter coat is a luxury they cannot otherwise afford.

Although I worked for the company for twelve years and gathered much information during that period, i have still found it necessary to contact many local people for helpful information, who travelled with or worked for the company, this includes several surviving members of the family. The book contains 192 pages, containing numerous photographs, many in colour with full details of the companies history and matters of local transport history dating back to the 1830’s. it is in A4 format and will retail at £28-00 The book will be available from June 1st 2014 and is published by the Leicester Transport Heritage Trust. Website-www.ltht.org.uk For further details contact Mick Gamble on 0116 2387735 after 6 P.M. if no answer please leave a message, or e-mail mickgamble@tiscali.co.uk Pre orders will be taken from May 1st 2014 The bus photograph is of a 1932 Gilford 1680T operated by Astills until just after the Second World War. (Part of the Astill family collection)

Competition Winner Congratulations to Mrs R. Kirk of Leicester Forest East, who won the £25 food voucher for The Field Head in Markfield. Like the darts... This months competition is two tickets to Armageddon see page 14 for all the details

Last year we received over 1,500 coats which went to hostels, domestic violence refuges, community drop-in centres and refugee projects. If you would like to find out more, please contact Katharine and Carrie at Leicestershire Cares on 0116 275 6469 or email katharine@leicestershirecares.co.uk carrie@leicestershirecares.co.uk

GREEN THUMB -

SPRING TOP TIPS LAWN CARE

LAWN TREATMENT SERVICE Martin and Michelle Williams have been running their award winning GreenThumb Lawn Service franchise for over 14 years. They now have over 6000 satisfied customers whose lawns they visit on a regular basis to apply seasonal treatments. Prices start from only £15 per treatment. This means that many of GreenThumb’s customers who have an annual programme of treatments, pay only £5 per month.

Here are some tips for Spring lawn care – courtesy of Martin and Michelle: • Make sure that your mower has been serviced and that the blades are sharp. • When you give your lawn the first cut of the season – aim to remove only the top third of growth. Remove too much all in one go and the grass will look very yellow.

The British weather will remain unpredictable, but what we can say for sure is that many lawns will be ready for some TLC come the Spring. After the wettest Winters on record, lawns will soon start to look yellow, sparse and very mossy. GreenThumb’s treatments will give you the lush, green, weed-free lawn that you have always wanted.

• When the grass growing season is properly underway, mow the lawn at least once and week. • NEVER cut the grass shorter than one inch.

BEFORE

AFTER

If you would like GreenThumb to take care of the feeding, weeding and moss control for you, then why not contact them for a noobligation, FREE lawn analysis and quote: Phone: 0116 269 4019 - Freephone : 0800 0111 222 - Email: leicswest@greenthumb.co.uk Facebook: Greenthumb Leicestershire West - Website: www.greenthumb.co.uk

• Apply a Spring blend, nitrogen rich feed to the lawns. • Spray weeds with a product which is recommended for use on grass some weedkillers will get rid of everything including your lawn!

Health Matters in yourLOCAL...

LESS SALT PLEASE Many people now know that eating too much salt is bad for their health and are looking to cut down. However, whilst you can take control of your salt intake when preparing food at home by reading the labels and not adding salt, when eating out of the home it can be difficult to know where to start. There is strong evidence that links high salt intake to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the main causes of strokes and a major cause of heart attacks and heart failures. A high salt diet has also been linked to other conditions, such as osteoporosis, cancer of the stomach, kidney disease, kidney stones, obesity and exacerbating the symptoms of asthma, Meniere’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and Diabetes. There is now some evidence that shows that a high salt intake in children also influences blood pressure and may predispose the child to the development of a number of diseases. So managing yours and your children’s salt intake is vital in order to remain healthy.

People with or considered at risk of high blood pressure should take extra care to ensure that they keep their salt intake below the recommended maximum of 6g. This can be achieved by simplechanges, such as consuming less processed foods and checking product labels before purchase. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that salt reduction is of equal importance to smoking cessation. This shows the importance of reducing salt intake, not only in the UK but worldwide as well. It is sometimes hard to think how a little extra seasoning on your food can have an adverse effect on your health. So here are some facts. Excess salt disrupts the natural sodium balance in the body. A natural sodium balance is essential for your kidneys to maintain a correct fluid balance. An increase in sodium (salt) causes your kidneys to retain more fluid in your blood vessels and body (fluid retention). This increase in fluid volume in your blood vessels then increases the pressure exerted by the blood against blood vessel walls (high blood pressure). This then causes a strain on the heart. So next time you put that little extra salt, it’s worth thinking about what it is doing to your body.

Providing Excellence in Healthcare Almost everyone in the UK eats too much salt. The daily recommended amount in the UK is no more than 6 grams a day; the current average salt intake is 8.6g salt a day although many people are eating more than this.

By being careful and monitoring our salt intake we can make some big changes. For every one gram of salt we cut from our average daily intake, there would be approximately 6,000 fewer deaths from strokes and heart attacks each year in the UK. It has been

FREE

estimated that a reduction in salt intake from 10g a day to 6g will reduce blood pressure and could lead to a 16% reduction in deaths from strokes and a 12% reduction in deaths from coronary heart disease. This would prevent approximately 19,000 stroke and heart attack deaths in the UK each year and 2.6 million each year worldwide. Reducing salt is one of the quickest ways to reduce your blood pressure, particularly if you already have high blood pressure. Kirby Muxloe WI In March a group of ladies from Kirby Muxloe W.I. went on a Baking Day at The Landgirls Cookery School in Hartshill Marina. Previously Annalaise, the owner and baker came to our W.I. meeting and gave a talk and demonstration on the Art of Making Bread and she so inspired us we booked into the Cookery School for a group lesson. We were greeted by the wonderful smell of, not bread but scones and bakewell tart; it was a super way to start the day . Most ladies had previously tried their hand at bread making but Annalaise put all the previous rules out the window, she made it simple, tasty and above all successful for everyone. She talked about the quality of the flour used and which flour was correct for which bread, from the very fine white French Flour which felt like silk to the more robust Wholemeal flour with 5 seeds and malt addition, adding that age old saying “you only get what you pay for” and it really is better to pay a little more for quality flour. First off we were to make a good old fashioned Cottage Batch Loaf, all the time we are mixing and kneading Annalaise was giving us tips and advice in her passionate and forthright manner. She told us that anyone can make bread and it really isn’t a hassle to do so and of course a whole lot more healthy for you too. She spoke about what is actually in a processed loaf and it certainly gave us all something to think about next time we’re in the supermarket. Whilst our loaves were proving we went and had tea and scones and then it was back to the making, this time it was 6 bread roles with various fillings such as, lavender/ sage, sun dried tomato and pancetta, goat’s cheese and many more to take your pick from. Our bread was then ready to go in the, oven, and whilst it was baking we had a well deserved cup of tea and hot cross bun. Then the moment arrived to take it all out the ovens and inspect our efforts and what a lovely surprise (well for me at least) all the bread was a success as you can see from the photographs. It smelt gorgeous and tasted delicious and thankfully she told us it freezes well too as I for one couldn’t have eaten that much bread in 2 days! It was an excellent morning out and one that we all would thoroughly recommend, in fact it was so good that we are all going back to learn how to make Italian Breads next month.

TRUE BLUE DANCE CREW - OPEN WEST END VARIETY SHOW 44 members of True Blue Dance Crew have just about come off cloud '9' having had the most amazing experience. 26th January 2014, 7.30am, a very cold Ratby Village Centre, True Blue dancers left the village by VIP Coach bound for London. The all girl group, were selected to Open a Variety Show at Her Majesty's Theatre in front of crowds of over 1,000. Six months hard work, and tiring rehearsals the girls were finally on their way to 'Live Their Dream'. On arrival at Her Majesty's Theatre, the dancers were shown to their dressing rooms, the night before, these were all filled with the Phantom Of The Opera Cast....how amazing! Onto the stage, the girls looked very nervous, but were met with a West End Star, Gary Weston, who has appeared in Saturday Night Fever, CATS, Les Miserables, Evita and Mama Mia and many more. Gary put the girls through their warm up and stretch session.....then off to dressing rooms for the first rehearsal. The squad aged 7 -21 years, all got glammed

up and hit the stage, all the rehearsals throughout the day went well, and it was soon time for curtain up!!! Nerves were now kicking in, the excitement and hearts beating fast......the tannoy announcement ...True Blue to the stage! Now this was our chance to shine. The girls opened the show with a Modern megamix kicked off by Will I Am, and our 198 supporters in the audience were clearly heard! How amazing....can we do it again.....Cant believe that....that was awesome....all comments made on the way back to the dressing room. We had about 40 mins. to prepare for our next routine, our Lyrical. Hair and make up re-done, changed and ready again. The girls bought tears to many eyes with their elegant lyrical routine, all dressed in Topaz Blue, dancing to Emile Sande, Clown/Imagine, Rhianna Stay and Beyoncé Ava Maria, the supporters again were so loud! All the costumes were made to measure and all looked stunning, my mum makes all our outfits and had many sleepness nights making 44

evening dresses! What an amazing experience for all the Dancers, a day they will never forget. Coach Angie Phillips said "This has always been my childhood dream.....to watch my dancers, including my two daughters out there on a west end stage was totally breath taking. Each and every dancer has been totally brilliant, and I am so pleased with their performance. The Group are already in talks for a Return visit to London next year, and have their annual Show in March. The Group are a Community Team, based at Ratby Village Hall and Fosse Neighbourhood Centre and have been running for over 16 years. Cawrey Homes Application in Ratby.

Highway safety

914/00108/OUT) from Cawrey Homes for 134 dwellings on land south of Markfield Rd

Intrusion into the National Forest and the Charnwood Forest.

Residents will be all too aware of this application and the subsequent public meeting arranged on the 4th of April attended by the Rt hon. David Tredinnick MP.

Development contrary to the 2009 site allocations DPD

This application seeks to place 134 further houses on land in open countryside known locally as the Burroughs. Whilst we have always sought to protect this valuable land, especially when the applicant came forward 10 years ago to develop this land and to place 500 houses on here together with a wood burning facility and a small industrial park. This application was withdrawn owing to public pressure at the time along with strong arguments put forward by Chris.

Prematurity in respect of the Local planning policies Sustainability.

Now we are faced with the same although in smaller proportions.

Simon Atha The Planning Department Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Hinckley Hub, Rugby Road, Hinckley Leicestershire LE10 0FR.

The whole of the Borough is currently facing unwanted development due to the failure of the ruling HBBC Lib/Dem Administration to put in place a site allocations document. The Administration has only just finished their consultation on the housing element of this document. The sites allocations document provides for the provision of land across the whole Borough to place the establish need of 9000 plus houses up to 2026. Ratby already has an adequate supply both in market sale and affordable housing up until 2026. We are faced with an aggressive development in the open countryside that seeks to initially empty on to a road that already has fatality and accident statistics and serious speeding issues which are being monitored by the police. The speeding figures have justified the mobile speed camera van. This will undoubtedly impact on the already heavily congested Markfield Rd, Main St and Station Rd. Together with the further impact on local infrastructure such as Ratby Primary School and local services, we are asking the village as a whole to come together just as it did 10 years ago and SAY NO! Proper planning reasons are needed to object to this application such as;• Development in the open countryside

This application 14/00108/OUT will decimate our village and we need your help to stop it. Your objections can be emailed to the case officer Simon Atha at the following email address; Simon.Atha@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk You can make a written objection via the Council Offices

Please quote the planning reference 14/00108/OUT Objections can be received right up to the evening of the planning committe meeting which is not likely to be before 27th May 2014 at the earliest. We agree that villages such as ours do need extra housing to accommodate residents that find it difficult to get on the property ladder. We signed off the application to allow 29 dwellings on the Cardinal Broach site as it supplies 19 affordable dwellings out of 29. Also we signed off the development at the former Geary's Bakery that will bring 13 new houses but more importantly a 5'000sq ft new Co-op store. These are benefits to our village that will enhance and benefit Ratby for years to come. Do you want Ratby to remain a village or a town with no added infrastructure? The Parish Council is also objecting to this application.

Bloor’s Judicial Review Decision The High Court Judge quashed the appeal decision on the grounds that the appeal inspector had failed to address Bloor's argument that no provision had been made in HBBC's calculations for the Council's required 5 year housing supply to allow for a potential 10% "slippage" on large sites. The Judge's view was that had this provision been made the Council would not have been able to demonstrate the necessary 5 year housing land supply whatever calculation method was used. Consequently, the Judge ruled that had this been properly taken into account this could have had a significant influence on the appeal decision. However the judge did not find totally in Bloor’s favour. Bloor’s failed on 4 out of 5 of their challenges including the Green Wedge argument. So the appeal decision was quashed and referred back to the Secretary of State for reconsideration. This could be dealt with in one of the following ways; (1) It could be by the way of a simple decision by the Secretary of State to grant planning permission. (2) A re-hearing of the appeal at Public Inquiry. (3) An appeal decision reached following written representations from the parties to the appeal (4) The Secretary of State could choose to consult with the Planning Inspector and uphold the original appeal decision (very unlikely). We will be holding a meeting with the Councils legal team and the head of planning to ensure our community gets the best representation at which ever method is used by the secretary of state to hear to deal with the Appeal. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and we are only a phone call away. We would like to end by wishing you all a Very Happy Easter. Regards

Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NEXT ISSUE OUT Friday 9th May 2014 Advert Deadline: Thurs 1st May

Families and staff at Rainbows children’s hospice thrilled as David Walliams becomes patron Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is delighted to announce David Walliams as its newest patron. Mr Walliams visited the East Midlands’ only children hospice last month, and was so moved by the families he met and the work of the charity, he wanted to get on board. The children, young people, families and staff at Rainbows are all overjoyed to have his valued support. As a Rainbows Patron, Mr Walliams will be supporting the hospice in whatever way his busy schedule allows, which will be invaluable in raising the profile of the charity. Ahead of his last visit, he donated personally signed copies of his books to the children and their siblings and said that he looked forward to visiting again. Mr Walliams said: “I am thrilled to become a patron for Rainbows. It’s a very special place with incredibly inspiring people. I have recently been to the hospice and met some of the children and their families. They have to deal with so much and Rainbows is there for them with smiles, laughter and lots of care and support. I was so moved by the positive atmosphere, that I wanted to get involved. It will be my pleasure to help raise awareness of this charity to help all of the children, young people and families.” Geoff Ellis, chief executive at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, added: “To have Mr Walliams on board is very exciting and we are extremely happy that he has pledged his support to us; we are delighted to welcome him as our newest patron. We are very grateful to all of our patrons and ambassadors for the wonderful work they do for Rainbows and for promoting the charity all over the UK. When Mr Walliams visited last month, everybody loved him and we appreciated him spending valuable time with our children, young people and their families.” Mr Walliams first heard about Rainbows when Susan Taylor very sadly lost her life swimming the English Channel for Rainbows last year. Although he didn't know Susan personally, Mr Walliams was very touched by her story and donated to Rainbows through her Virgin Money website as well as sending messages to Mrs Taylor’s family. This year, Rainbows is celebrating 20 years of care and to commemorate its birthday, the charity wants to raise an extra £100,000 over the year to help fund more children’s nurses. Rainbows cares for 288 children and young people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses as well as supporting 249 bereaved families and 521 siblings. Through its outreach efforts into East Midlands paediatric oncology units, Rainbows is also caring for a growing number of the region’s children with cancer. NEW BROOKVALE- GROBY CAMPUS BAND It is with great delight that I am able to announce the start of the Brookvale-Groby Band. This is the coming together of musicians across the campus led by our teachers Miss White and Ms Bridge. We look forward to their first joint cross campus public performance in the Summer term. Mr Coles, Principal, Groby Community College.

Sign up to garden waste collections Blaby District residents looking to dispose of their garden waste can sign up to the collections service by renting a bin. Starting from 1 April 2014, residents can choose from either a standard sized 140ltr bin at £18 per year or the larger 240ltr bin at £27 per year. This is a slight increase from the previous year. Collections are made on the same day as refuse and recycling collections, fortnightly during the summer with monthly collections in December, January and February. Councillor Guy Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Regulatory and Neighbourhood Services at Blaby District Council, said: “Due to an increase in fuel costs, composting fees and bin prices, the garden bin rental prices will be increasing slightly from 1 April.

International cycling tour pedals its way through Leicestershire

“It is a superb service and I hope people continue to make use of it. All of the garden waste collected is taken to local farms where it is composted and spread on to fields as a soil improver. This reduces transport costs and avoids the environmental impact of land filling it.”

The elite field will then cover 118.5km passing through Enderby, Cosby, Broughton Astley and Lutterworth before travelling into Northamptonshire on its way to the stage finish in Bedford.

Residents who already take part in the garden waste collection scheme will not have the new prices applied until the next invoice after 1 April, i.e. those due to receive an invoice in March 2014 will be charged at the current price.

Eleven of the world’s top 14 teams are now confirmed for the event, including reigning World and Olympic champion Marianne Vos. The field will also include Leicestershire’s Lucy Garner, the double junior World road-race champion who will lead a young GB national team through her home county.

For more information visit www.blaby.gov.uk/gardenwaste, email env.health@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 272 7555.

The Women’s Tour for professional cyclists will surge through parts of the Leicestershire countryside during its second stage in May, it has been confirmed. The stage will see the line-up of world-class sportswomen start from Hinckley at 11am on Thursday 8th May.

Lucy said: “It means a lot to me that the Women’s Tour is coming through Leicestershire. I have lived and ridden on these roads my whole life and it’s exciting to know the world’s best riders will get to race and experience them.” Peter Osborne, the county council’s Cabinet member for transport, said: “Now we know where the Women’s Tour is going, I’m sure people will start to plot where they can get a glimpse of the race. “It is great news that such a prestigious event is going through the county and I hope people turn out in their thousands to support The Women’s Tour.” Oundle in Northamptonshire will host the start of the tour which takes place over five stages between Wednesday, 7 and Sunday, 11 of May. Further details of the race and the locations for the remaining stages will be announced over the coming months. More on the Women’s Tour can be found at www.womenstour.co.uk or on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/thewomenstour

Kirby Muxloe Players Fun, laughter and drama echoed through the Kirby Muxloe Village hall as new actors and directors took to the stage with our one-act plays. A good time was had by our audience and cries of ‘We must do it again next year’ have been noted by the committee. But now all concentration and attention is geared to our next production. The Players are off to Whitby, in the safe hands of Margaret Wood. No, we’re not all taking a holiday, we’re busy rehearsing ‘Last Tango in Whitby’ by Mike Harding. This talented playwright, perhaps better known as The Rochdale Cowboy has written a very funny and heart-warmingly poignant play. Follow our actors as they take this year’s charabanc trip to Whitby, watch their ballroom dancing and enjoy their talent show. See Pat’s tale unfold, as recently widowed she tries to find some fun. Our box office is open; don’t miss this good night out. Dates are 30th April -3rd May; 7.30pm telephone 07804435235 or contact our web site www.kirbyplayers.co.uk

Bosworth Academy is a very good school Bosworth Academy was visited by Ofsted on the 4th and 5th of February 2014. In summary, the Ofsted report reaffirmed that the Academy is a very good school, however the Academy’s aim is to be outstanding in Ofsted terms, but more importantly in the experience that young people get every day and the outcomes they achieve as a result. The report talks of a ‘relentless focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning and the careful checking of students’ progress as a key driver of success’. It also recognises how the school is driven to maximise the potential of all students no matter what their background. The ‘quality of teaching’ section of the report comments on ‘teachers having high expectations of students and targets which are demanding’. Students from all year groups in the school, selected at random by the inspection team, reiterated this to the inspectors during interviews. When commenting on the students behaviour, they noted that the ‘Academy is an orderly environment in which students get on well, are respectful to staff and welcoming to visitors’. Also ‘students feel safe, bullying is rare and, when reported, staff deal with it quickly and effectively’. They ‘arrive to lessons on time, properly equipped and ready to learn’. ‘Sixth form students have a positive approach to their learning and how they conduct themselves around the Academy’.

The Academy Principal, Mr Chris Parkinson, commented, “We are pleased that Ofsted told us what we already knew; we are a very good school”. He went on to say, “I do not want to give the impression however that we are satisfied with this; we know there is still much to do, we know there is much we can and must improve. We will continue to strive for these improvements every day. Every decent school should believe this whatever their Ofsted label. Nevertheless, we will hold true our values, we will not resort to doing things

just for Ofsted or league tables that are ultimately not in our students’ best interest. We are happy to be measured by Ofsted, but we do not do what we do for Ofsted; it is for the young people we see every day”. Our journey to outstanding continues. The full report is available to view by going on the Academy’s website: www.bosworthacademy.org.uk

Ratby Primary School News.... Walking Tall At Ratby Primary School we always try to support charity events that are taking place locally and nationally, but are conscious not to keep asking our families for contributions. With this in mind, we decided that we would not get too involved in the BBC’s Sports Relief this year. However, our school council had other ideas! After seeing a video in an assembly about the fantastic aid work funded by Sports Relief, the school council decided that we should do something to help. The children decided that the whole school should give up their break time to walk laps of the playground, and that families could sponsor their child or pay a small donation. The staff were really impressed to see the children giving up their time and, in some cases, their pocket money to support this good cause. As sponsor money is still coming in, we don’t have a final figure for just how much money the children raised but, whatever the amount, we couldn’t be prouder of our children for demonstrating such thoughtful and selfless attitudes.

Making Links and Making Friends This term we’ve been focusing on trying to develop new links within our community, and our school council has now been twinned with the school council at Wyvern Primary School in Leicester City. Wyvern Primary School is culturally very different to Ratby and offers our children an insight into some of the different cultures, faiths and languages that make Leicester such a wonderfully diverse place to live in. At the same time, the children of Wyvern will be able to find out more about life in a semi-rural village by talking and writing to our children. The two school councils will meet up periodically to swap and share experiences, and to take part in celebrations that are going on within each other’s schools. During their first visit to Wyvern, our school council, accompanied by Mrs Oliver, Mrs Hardy and Rev. Peter, had the chance to meet their new friends, have a look around their school and play some games to get to know each other. They then had a discussion about what they think makes their school great. Once the link is established, there will also be opportunities for children beyond the school council to take part in activities such as writing letters, sending pictures or even writing online blogs to one another. We’ll keep you posted as this fantastic new relationship develops.

Read for Ratby Primary School

As mentioned in the previous issue of The Local, we have been reading for our school! The children embraced the challenge to read online and our final total was a staggering 643 books. Pearson will donate at least 100,000 books to Book Aid International’s life-changing programme, School Library in a Box. Through this programme, high quality, new books will be distributed to schools in Tanzania. Pupils were given the challenge to write a letter to the children in Tanzania who will receive the books explaining the benefits of reading and helping others. The entries below have been nominated to represent the school for the Writing competition.

Expressing yourself through reading

Reading expands the mind. It is a passion shared by many and is enjoyed in many different ways. Every incredible word on the page seems to take you away to a place where fairies and sprites exist or dinosaurs roam the earth. Nothing is better than sitting down with your favourite book in your favourite place, absorbing all of the words on what seems like endless pages. It's wonderful! Expression comes through reading. No one can tell you which books to like or read; it's all you. I like books with humour, drama and mystery. Some people like books with fairies or facts. But it doesn't matter what type of book that you're reading, what matters is that you enjoy what you're reading. Every page should make your spine tingle or put an enormous grin across your face. Not just looking at a blob of pages because you've got nothing to do, but for fun, interest, happiness, everything you want to read on a few pages in front of you. Without stories, the world wouldn't be the same. I hope that reading does the same to you as it does to me, remember to enjoy reading. THANK YOU FOR READING Emily Adkin

Change a life!

Why not help the less fortunate? Hopefully they can be as lucky as us; having fun, exploring books, and mainly having the best education ‘read for your school’ can give them. Unfortunately some children from other countries do not have the chance to have an education; in addition they can't read but by giving these books to those children it could help them by building their confidence, and helping them to read. Imagine the laughter as they read the book never experiencing anything like it before, you could make their life truly outstanding! Knowing that you have changed a life, could be your life achievement, it may not be your best achievement but it is a truly astonishing achievement. Please make a difference and change a life today. Abbie Kirkup

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com At the moment these are proposals only. The Cabinet approved the MTFS in February and are now consulting with residents on the Library service.

Sewers on Stamford Street. Severn Trent has now completed all the repairs to the sewers in Stamford Street a total of 5 collapses were found and repaired. I am sure residents will be pleased that the Sewers are now clear for the whole length of Stamford Street. However Severn Trent will now be making further enquiries to trace a wrong connection using a camera. It would appear that at some time previously a property has made a wrong connection to the surface water pipe connecting their foul waste it. Severn Trent will now be able to trace this using a camera now all the collapses have all be repaired this should take place within the next few weeks. Station Road, Ratby I am giving residents a very early notification that Station Road will be closed from its junction with Taverner Drive to the spot island junction with Desford Road, Kirby Muxloe. From the 24th May to the 7th June 2014 to allow Severn Trent to put a new water main in. Whilst this work is taking place the diversion route will be via Station Road, Desford Lane, Ratby, Desford Lane, Desford Road, Ratby Lane, Kirby Muxloe and vice versa. This work is planned for 3 weeks and I wanted to give residents a very early heads up. I will give a further update next month and include a route map. Libraries Consultation. The service in which Libraries are placed (Communities and Wellbeing) has a target of saving £1.9 million by 2016. Of this it is proposed to explore how £800K could be saved across the rural libraries, which collectively account for around 25% of overall library business.

So what is the county council's offer on libraries? The County Council is proposing to make savings of £800,000 and we will take into account any changes in behaviour such as a lot of people now accessing books online.

consultation you can take part on line at the following address; www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/futurelibraries If you do not have a computer you can use the ones in the Library free. General queries about consultation Tel 0116 305 7034 - futurelibraries@leics.gov.uk Information will be on display at each Library and how to take part.

The County expect to continue to run our town libraries but they will explore communityrunning of our smaller libraries and possible co-location with other organisations, such as parish councils. The County may have to close libraries if they can't find partners. Smaller libraries are already not the best used and we’ve reflected that by reducing opening hours.

Ratby’s Public Meeting is on Monday 16th June at 7pm at the Ratby Church Rooms Church Lane doors open at 6.30pm.

What will be the terms of conditions, will groups have to buy books etc? The County are still working on the detail but the broad proposal is for the County Council to offer professional support from its libraries service on a tapering basis to help develop the understanding needed. We have been following the work of other local authorities who have been more advanced in this to learn lessons from them. We also have a significant volunteer network working with the service already and we hope that we can encourage greater involvement from those experienced volunteers to help.

Wed 30th April - Bagworth Community Centre

Yes, it is just a proposal at this stage so please take part in the consultation before any final implementation is agreed. The County is now consulting with the public on its proposed changes to the Libraries The Consultation Starts 7th April – Ends 7th July Survey (online – but paper copies available) Consultation meetings at or near each community library Community Partnership Library workshops I would urge all residents to take part in this

The County Council have also arranged 3 Community Partnerships Library Workshops planned, where you can get more information and advice on running a local library. All workshops start at 6.15pm and finish at 8.30pm. (Doors open at 6pm) Monday 19th May - County Hall Monday 16th June - Shepshed High School To help the Council plan for these workshops I would ask residents to, please register in advance at futurelibraries@leics.gov.uk or by calling 0116 305 7034. I will remind residents again next month. I will also be lobbying to keep Ratby and Groby Libraries open through the scrutiny process as your local County Councillor. I personally believe that the Library service is such an important part of our community it serves some of the most vulnerable people in our community. I would like to thank you all for your continued support and to remind you that I am only a phone call or email away. I would like to end by wishing you all a Very Happy Easter.

Epworth Forest Kirby Muxloe Local Junior Football History Group Club Celebrate 25 Year Anniversary Epworth Forest Junior Football Club are celebrating their 25 Year Anniversary having been formed in 1989. The club was formed by 2 parents who were playing for Epworth FC senior team at the time who played in the Adult Leicestershire District league. Being based in Leicester Forest East they wanted to incorporate the name into their club, and so Epworth Forest was formed. The Club didn’t have to wait too long for success, in their very first season the U10 team won their League and in the following seasons went on for more success, but probably the biggest achievement for the club was having teams in every age group making Epworth Forest a well and truly established junior football club. The club has always been run entirely by Volunteer’s and one in particular is Mr Phil Williams now in his 20th year in which he has done various jobs from Manager to Club Secretary a truly remarkable achievement. The Club has now achieved FA Charter Standard which among many things has seen all Managers CRB checked and achieving Level 1 coaching badges. Another achievement for the Club was being awarded a grant from the Olympic Legacy funding which will help in keeping the equipment up to the required specifications. With the future very much in mind the club are now looking to hold a couple of Free Soccer coaching sessions on Sunday May 4th and 11th to try and help fill spaces that have become available for new teams and managers for boys and girls aged 5 years to 10.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg On Thursday 20th March, Widow Grooby, also known as Alison Coates, after greeting us in medieval English, explained that she was from Groby, and that her name carried the original spelling of that place name. She proceeded to conduct us on a “virtual” walk into Richard III’s Leicester, explaining that “gate” was merely an old English name for a street, and not a gate at all. So we walked along the gates that Richard III would have used as he arrived in Leicester, on his way to stay at the Blue Boar Inn. Widow Grooby, dressed authentically in period costume, nevertheless used modern technology to present a slide show of sketches, prints and photographs that, together, built up a picture of 15th century Leicester that we could relate to its modern day counterpart. With all the current interest in Richard III, this was a great opportunity to understand life in those times, particularly in relation to the streets and buildings in our county town. After the break for refreshment, Pam Shuttlewood, a resident for many years in the village talked about her memories of working both in the village and in the city. Our next meeting will take place on Thursday 15th May, when Peter Liddle will be presenting ‘Time Team Leicestershire’. The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe. Some pictures of ‘Old’ Kirby Muxloe are now displayed in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, so if you visit the Hall, you might like to look at them.

Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club Look to Strengthen Their Bowls Teams After A Successful 2013 Leicester Marathon returns for 2014 with an emphasis on raising money for local charities. The date for 2014’s Leicester Marathon has been officially confirmed this week by the organising team. The event will take place on Sunday 26th October, and will start from Victoria Park at 9.15am. After the success of combining multiple running events in previous year, the 2014 event will provide opportunities for all ages and ability of runners. There will be a full 26.2 mile marathon as well as a half marathon, relay races and a fun run. The organisers want to encourage everybody to get involved as either a runner or spectator. Last year, 2,500 runners took place in the city centre event, raising an estimated total of £70,000 for charities. This year’s event will focus on raising as much money as possible for the race’s partners, so runners are being actively encouraged to participate as part of a charity team. Participating charity runners will be able to take part for free. LOROS, Bamboozle Theatre Company and St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice are amongst the charities taking part and asking runners to raise money for their charity in return for a place. The charities will be hosting designated cheering points along the route where spectators supporting charity runners will congregate, giving runners that much needed boost during their run. “We really appreciate the support of those giving up their time and raising money for the race’s charity partners,” comments race director Christian Weikert-Picker, “This year’s event is designed to get all sorts of people involved, raise awareness of the work of such important charities, and encourage people to get active and to get fundraising.” To find out more about the marathon and register to run, visit www.leicestermarathon.org.uk

Record number of Blaby District athletes awarded GO GOLD funding A record number of aspiring athletes from the district have been successful in gaining GO GOLD funding. A total of 25 young residents have been awarded the talented athlete funding, resulting in Blaby District having the most successful applications in Leicestershire. The aim of the GO GOLD funding is to support talented young athletes who are currently performing at regional standard or above in their sport, including those recognised by their national governing bodies as being the future Olympic, Paralympic, Special Olympic, and Commonwealth Games potential medal winners. Blaby resident Lucy Garner, Double Junior Cycling Road Race Champion 2011 & 2012, has been supported by the funding for a number of years, and is a prime example of what the funding can help to achieve. One of the athletes to secure funding this year is Lizzie Warner, a national champion in archery. She said: “Being selected as a Go Gold athlete means that my achievements have been recognised by people outside my own sport. They believe I have the potential to achieve something special in archery and are willing to finance me to help me do it.” Councillor Clements, portfolio holder for Corporate Service, Performance and Leisure, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the district and great to see we have so many talented athletes getting the help and support they deserve. It shows the great work undertaken by the Blaby District Local Sports Alliance and local sports clubs across the district is paying off.” The scheme is run by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, funded by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council and Rutland County Council. It financially supports athletes who live or attend a school in Leicestershire, Rutland or Leicester City. For more information visit www.sportblaby.org.uk, email leisure@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 272 7703.

Redgate - Open Day and Dog Show, Sunday 10th August Invitation to Stallholders / Crafters / Activity organisers / Display groups Well, we’ve had our first planning meeting at Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, (situated by the side of the A511 next to Stanton under Bardon), and we would like to invite you to join us this year on Sunday 10th August for our annual Open Day and Dog Show – a great family day out. Timings will be 10.00 – 3.30pm. Charges for Stallholders/Sales:• Cost per 6’ table – under cover The main difference this year is the ‘rental’ cost per 6’ table provided by us. This year unfortunately, due to fast rising costs, we will have to charge £15 per table (with as many as possible situated in the marquees or under one of our own gazebos). • Cover We are just in the process of sorting out new marquees and we undertake to provide as much cover as we possibly can. We will update you in plenty of time before the event. • Your own stand / gazebo? If you would rather bring your own pop-up gazebo and table/salescounter, do please let us know and we can start planning out the site for this year’s event. The cost for a space for your own gazebo – up to 3m x 3m – and bringing your own table/sales-counter - would be £20 in total. Please email me if your gazebo is bigger than this and we can discuss arrangements individually. • Chairs Also with regard to chairs, we will only have a few available as most will be reserved for the Dog Show and agility exhibitors/spectators, and again, if you could bring your own folding chair(s) in the back of the car when you come, that would be great. Please note – if you are a CHARITY – you can have a space for a PR table free of charge (please bring own table).

To book your place please call Helen on 01530 244914 or e:mail admin@shuttlewood-clarke.org.

• Exhibitors warmly invited! Please contact me if you could run an activity or bring an interesting exhibit for families to look at (animal, vegetable, mineral or vehicle!)

Copt Oak Memorial Hall is situated on Whitwick Road, Copt Oak, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB.

Is Your Local School a SCoRE School? Get practical support and guidance on energy efficiency from Leicestershire County Council. The Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency (SCoRE) is a 12 month practical programme which helps schools reduce energy bills and save money. Advice and guidance is given on energy efficiency, including adjusting boiler times and temperatures, switching off lighting and electrical equipment and draft proofing. SCoRE supports many aspects of the curriculum including geography, science, maths, design and citizenship. Students are encouraged to be part of the programme and work with staff to achieve the best savings. Manor High School, Oadby has also taken part in the scheme. Their electricity consumption was reduced by 12%, and despite a cold winter, their gas usage relative to other years, was also reduced. Paul Clarke, site manager and Liam Powell, head teacher worked to apply the SCoRE principles across the whole school community and achieved savings of £9,400. Nichole Browne, School Environment Officer, Leicestershire County Council, said: “Applications for the next phase of the SCoRE programme are being taken now, and we look forward to working with a new set of schools. Schools can make significant savings on their energy use. They achieve real energy efficiencies when the plan is embedded throughout the whole school.” Interested schools should apply before Friday 25th April 2014 to be part of the next SCoRE programme by calling Nichole Browne 0116 305 5593, Nichole.Browne@leics.gov.uk

Big Wild Sleepout Have a wild night out... ... join in the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout. From 16-22 June, we’re encouraging people to spend a night under the stars to find out which creatures they share their homes with, and raise money to help protect wildlife. UK wildlife will play host to all kinds of campers – adventurous campers will be building and sleeping in dens and shelters, some will stick to the traditional tent, while others plan to sleep on their garden trampoline. To help people get the most out of their wild night out, we’ve produced a free fundraising pack full of fun ideas to make raising money really easy. For those who don’t have a garden, the RSPB is also organising some exciting Big Wild Sleepout events across the UK. With special night time activities like outdoor cooking, stories round the campfire and night-time strolls, all events are different and a full list is available on the RSPB website rspb.org.uk/sleepout The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB’s ‘Giving Nature a Home’ campaign, which is aimed at inspiring everyone to do their bit for nature, wherever they live and however big their outside space. So grab your friends and family for a sponsored sleepout in your back garden and be part of the RSPB’s biggest fundraising event to help give nature a home. The Big Wild Sleepout is being supported by Blacks, the leading outdoor equipment specialist.

Become a ‘Crimestopper’ in Leicestershire Keep your community safe and show that crime really does matter Independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is appealing for enthusiastic members of the public to join its volunteer team in Leicestershire and Rutland, and support the fight against crime in the county. The charity last month launched a national discussion on key crimes affecting the UK public and is now seeking out willing individuals to join its growing family of crime fighters. In Leicestershire alone, 1681 pieces of useful information about crime were received by Crimestoppers in the year 2012/13 leading to 152 arrests.

YOUNG ENTERPRISE SUCCESS Congratulations to all the members of Groby Community College’s Year 12 Young Enterprise Team ‘Eunoia’ on winning the award for the ‘Best Trade Stand Performance’ at the Young Enterprise Trade Fair held at Leicester Highcross on Sunday 9 March.

Whether your expertise is in business, the media, or maybe even fundraising, we’d love to hear from you – all we ask is that you have a passion for your local area and you share the same vision as we do – that everyone deserves to live in a community free of crime. East Midlands Regional Manager, Kiran Dhanda, said: “Volunteering for Crimestoppers is a great way to make a difference and I’m really looking forward to growing our team to make Leicestershire and Rutland safer places to live and work.” “You can dedicate as much or as little time as you like – every little helps and your efforts will be rewarded with the satisfaction that you are playing a part in keeping your community safe.” "Roles could be anything from working with local businesses to gain financial support to promoting our Fearless message to 11-16 year olds. We are also keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in taking on Treasury or Secretarial roles.”

Joe Boden, being presented with the ’Best Trade Stand Performance’ winning award!

"Any help would be greatly appreciated. You really could make a difference.'' Crimestoppers is an independent charity which helps the police to solve crimes, making communities safer. They can also use our ‘giving information’ form via our website www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Around 20 people are arrested and charged every day as a result of information given to Crimestoppers. If you are interested in becoming a Crimestoppers volunteer in Leicestershire and Rutland, please visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org/volunteer or call 020 8835 3700.
