Local Girls To Perform In London’s West End

Interesting ideas for your conser vatory... With escalating heating costs in the winter and with glass/polycarbonate roofs acting as green houses during the summer, is it time to re evaluate your conservatory in line with modern requirements.

This local group of young girls headed off for the bright lights of London’s theatre land during the last weekend of January. The local youngsters from Kirby Muxloe and Leicester Forest East, aged 7 to 9 years of age are heading south to perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the heart of London’s West End.

In all the splender of the French Renaissances design, these girls will be preforming for an audience of 1200 people. The youngsters are part of a larger group from Starlight Dance & Theatre School in Leicester, most of which have been attending from the age of 3.

Codie, Rahiannon, Emmie, Khia, Lucy, Georgia and Olivia are all looking forward to the experience, as it’s likely to be something they will probably remember for many years to come. As well as performing in the show, they will be working hard throughout the day with their teachers and the theatre’s choreographers to learn new routines. It’s been an exciting few weeks preparing and now they get to perform. I believe the correct expression is Break-a-leg, although we sincerely hope you don’t.

Residents may be aware that the old Leisure centre in the middle of Hinckley needed to be replaced and now HBBC have brought forward a plan to build a new one on the site of the former council offices at argent's mead which is in the process of being demolished. The administration has pushed these plans through despite our concerns that it will not be fit for purpose. It appears that no proper and meaningful consultation had been carried out with the user groups such as Amateur Swimming Association. Whilst we fully support the idea of a new centre , it has to be said that despite borrowing a further £4.5 million (which now takes their total borrowing up to £99million ) to build it, the majority of taxpayers across the Borough will not be able to access it as there are no bus routes to and from Hinckley. Furthermore, despite claiming the pool will be of competition standard and attract people into the Borough, this is not the case as the pool is not the required depth of 2mts (min) and lacks the proper amount of seating. Despite having evidence from the Hinckley Swimming Club and the Amateur Swimming Association, at the Council Meeting we were outvoted on our attempts to ensure that first class facilities for all users would be provided.

Site Allocations Document. HBBC has also agreed for this document to go forward for consultation across the Borough before submission to the Secretary of State for approval. The document will detail areas of the Borough to be set aside for development in terms of housing, employment, leisure, play and open space, etc up to 2026. Ratby has already reached its capacity, however until this document is adopted there will be no protection from the ambitions of developers. The document also DOES NOT include Gypsy and Traveller sites as this will be coming forward in a later consultation period. The consultation period lasts from Monday 17th February until 5pm Monday 31st March. Residents will not be contacted directly although details will appear in the Borough newspaper. Over 13,500 responses were received on the previous consultation and residents should take this opportunity to have their say. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and we are only a phone call away. Regards

Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

The likelihood now is that prestige events and competitions that would have generated significant extra revenue will now go to other centres such as Braunstone.

Planning permission granted for new Lubbesthorpe Permission for a major new housing development in Lubbesthorpe comprising of 4,250 homes has been granted.

congestion and reduce the impact of traffic on Beggars Lane/A47 by providing direct access from the outer ring road.

Blaby District Council has now concluded the legal agreement under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act to secure over £40 million of infrastructure so that the new community will be sustainable.

The bridge will make sure that much-needed homes in the Leicestershire area can be delivered at an early stage along with new infrastructure provision. Without the bridge the number of homes accessible in the first phase of the development would be limited to 300.

This includes affordable housing, highway improvements, education, healthcare, and library provision, community facilities and open space. Plans for the development were originally approved by Councillors on 1 November 2012, where the planning application was then referred to the Secretary of State. On 5 March 2013 Eric Pickles confirmed he was not calling in the application and the Council could proceed to issue the decision, subject to a number of conditions and completion of the complex legal agreement to secure items such as new schools, road improvements and other necessary infrastructure. The Lubbesthorpe development will include a package of transport improvements, improved bus service, a secondary school and two primary schools, a health centre, work space, as well as community and leisure facilities. The new village centre will encourage a strong sense of community from an early stage and reduce residents’ need to travel to access services and employment. The construction of a bridge over the M1 that will link Leicester with the development, expected to start in April 2014, will ease

Councillor Ernie White, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: “Across the district there is a need to provide lots more housing to meet the needs of our population and Lubbesthorpe allows us to do this in the best possible way for everyone. “It will bring affordable houses to help our young people, extra care facilities for our older people, job opportunities and significant infrastructure such as schools, community facilities, transport improvements, and a very high percentage of public open space. It is in the most sustainable location in the district, and enables us to provide a scale of infrastructure that is not possible with lots of smaller developments. “Lubbesthorpe gives us the chance to build a brand new vibrant community from scratch. We have set up a Community Consultative Board including partners from neighbouring parishes so that Lubbesthorpe is delivered in a way that adds value to the whole of Blaby District.” For more information on the Lubbesthorpe plan visit www.blaby.gov.uk/lubbesthorpe and for further details on the bridge visit www.leics.gov.uk/M1_Bridge_to_Growth

News From Brookvale High School

RATBY PARISH COUNCIL Christmas Decorations – The Council was on-the-whole very encouraged and pleased with the majority of comments regarding the street decorations. However, there was a certain amount of criticism regarding the tree! In previous years the Council provided a real Christmas Tree – this was expensive and very difficult to decorate with lights, and some complained about the shape and size of the tree then! The Council has for several years been criticised over not providing street decorations and did it’s best to provide a display for 2013 – it seems we can’t win! However, rest assured we shall keep trying! Community Garden – Ferndale Park – Some 2 years ago the Council created a Community Garden in Ferndale Park. Unfortunately, the majority of the trees and shrubs were vandalised and now all that remains are a few shrubs and bulbs! The Council is now looking to reinstate and develop this area and wonders if any of you have any ideas for this project. If so, please contact the Council. Dog Fouling – This is still a problem around the village, which is rather annoying to those residents who do clean up after their animals! It seems that there are a certain number of irresponsible dog owners in the village. If anyone witnesses this irresponsible behaviour then please contact Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council.

Brookvale High School is extremely proud to continue our close link with West Gate Special School. During the course of last term students, along with their teachers, from West Gate’s Upper 4, came to join with us for two separate 3 week blocks, firstly practising their culinary skills, and then again to work with Laura White, our Music Subject Leader, perfecting their musical talents! Some of the West Gate students were familiar to us, and had visited us before, but we were delighted to welcome new faces to this year’s group. As in the past, when our friends from West Gate pay us a visit, we are overwhelmed with the number of our own students from Brookvale who wish to volunteer to assist with the planned programme of activities and it is always so very inspirational to observe the friendships that develop between these young people, all of whom have very different needs. These two 3 week blocks culminated on the last week of term with a Christmas party in our Drama Studio, where music, dancing, and even a little bit of singing (when no-one was listening!!!) was enjoyed by both schools. During this term, West Gate students, both old and new, will be joining us again for a spot of clay modelling and another bash at becoming a Master Chef! Maybe your son/daughter will be helping? If so, you will most definitely be treated to a heart-warming account of their experiences, as they get to know their new friends. Watch this space for more news of future adventures.................... Elaine Freeman – Roving Reporter!

Salt/Grit Bins – As you are no doubt aware, the Council has provided additional salt bins around the village. However, someone has been pushing them over and emptying the contents out. The Council’s maintenance man has re-set the bins and cleared up the salt. This again is irresponsible and anti-social behaviour. If anyone witnesses this sort of action, please either contact the Council Office, or the Police. Refuse bins - Council has received several requests from residents asking that refuse bins are taken in the day of collection and not left in the pavement. Councillors: Mrs Merle B Joyce (Chairman), Mr K Hunnybun (Vice Chairman), Mr C W Boothby (Borough Councillor), Mr P Hancox, Mrs A Hunnybun, Miss K Johnson, Mrs J O’Shea, Mr L J P O’Shea (County Councillor & Borough Councillor), Mr R Tasker Ratby Parish Council, 13 Station Road, Ratby, Leicestershire LE6 0JQ, Tel: 0116 239 0167 Email: ratbypcouncil@btconnect.com

Ratby Primary School News.... Sing it Loud, Sing it Proud!

Pet Roadshow

On Monday 27th January the Sunshine and Rainbow classes became a real life pet shop for the afternoon. Parents and Carers were invited to come and show their pets, or join their child to find out more about the pets on show.

Report by Mary Cawrey (Year 4)

The response was fantastic and the children were fascinated to find out about some rather unusual pets, like Mrs Payne’s stick insects!!!

On 25th January Mrs Young took me and the rest of the Ratby Primary School Choir to perform at the LG Arena in Brimingham. It was spectacular! First we had to walk through a crowd of children. Trying not to stand on each other, we cautiously clambered onto our seats. “Oh my, I can’t believe we’re really here!” we all gasped at once.

Some of the children brought in their own pets; they had to present and answer questions about how to look after and care for their pet. The children were joined by a fish, a guinea pig, a rabbit, a giant African land snail, rats, stick insects and a budgie called Joey! Luckily all of the pets featured had been given their lunch before they arrived!!! The afternoon was a huge success and it launched the topic with a flying start! A HUGE thank you to all involved for making it such a success. It was great to see such a variety of pets and to have the help of the parents throughout the afternoon, they all helped make it a big hit.

After that we started to practise our songs. Beneath our seats, there was a part that you could trap your fingers in, so we were warned not to go poking around there (some people did, but luckily they didn’t get trapped!) Loudly, we started to sing our hearts out! Amazingly, we were the loudest (as loud as the loudest trumpet you’ve ever heard!) We sang with the X Factor’s Stacey Solomon, and even sang hip hop whilst dancers performed. The sound was tremendous! Next we ate our food, which was very tasty, and then got ready for the big, brilliant part… Shining down, the mulit-coloured lights made our eyes glisten. We really enjoyed performing (and we hoped that our parents in the audience enjoyed listening). It was… it was tremendously awesome!!! “Thank you Mrs Young!” we all said, all tired out.

Right On Target

- Report by Isabelle Henderson (Year 4)

This term the topic in Year 3 and Year 4 is Woodland Adventures and the children have been learning about all sorts of fascinating things – from woodland creatures to Robin Hood. On Wednesday 29th January a local archer called Mr. Morhan came in to school to talk to us about archery. He brought in all different sorts of bows to show us. The first one was almost as tall as him! That was the long bow. He told us lots of interesting facts, and even let Hannah and Nathan have a go at pulling back the string. I bet it was really hard to do. The bow had curved ends and the arrows were very different to the modern ones that he showed us – they were as sleek as the sleekest bit of wood! We all really enjoyed the visit, and would like to thank Mr. Morhan for sharing his expert knowledge with us.

Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30pm. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg January 16th saw a visit of the Desford Lane Pedallers Veteran Cycle Club. Tony and Madeleine Pickering brought with them three examples of early bicycles. The most striking was the “Penny Farthing”. Madeleine explained that when they show the bicycle to members of the younger generation, they not only talk about the origin of this particular mode of transport, but they also have to describe what a “penny” and a “farthing” were! Those present enjoyed hearing about the thrills and spills of riding these veteran machines, both in the early days of the bicycle and in modern times, despite “health & safety”. For these are not just cycles to be admired in a museum – they are ridden on a regular basis and attract considerable interest wherever they go. Tony and Madeleine spoke passionately and enthusiastically about their hobby and we were all transported back to a bygone age when life was simpler, though not necessarily safer! Our next meeting will take place on Thursday March 20th and will take a ‘Virtual Walk’ through Richard III’s Leicester. It will be led by Widow Grooby (Alison Coates). The Group will also be presnt at the Beaumanor History Fair on Sunday 23rd March, which will be open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. More details of this event, including details of the talks that will be given, are shown on www.lahs.org.uk The Group are organising a WW1 Exhibition, to recognise the 2014 Anniversary of the outbreak of war. This exhibition will take place in the Village Hall on Saturday 5th April. More information will follow. The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe. World Book Day therefore sends schools packs of Book Tokens (more than 14 million this year; or one for nearly every child aged under 18 in the country!) and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs. Children can then take their voucher to a local bookseller and use it to pick one of eight (new and free) books. Or, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing more than £2.99 at a participating bookshop. For more details of how to get involved, please visit: www.worldbookday.com. County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com So what is the county council's offer on libraries? The County Council is proposing to make savings of £800,000 and we will take into account any changes in behaviour such as a lot of people now accessing books online. Library Services Proposals The proposal detailed in the recent cabinet report on the MTFS refers to the reduction in funding for communities libraries and a review of other library services. The public consultation on the MTFS last year suggested that people felt that the CC had higher priorities in the overall budget than libraries (and Museums) and that communities could play a bigger role in delivering these services. The service in which Libraries are placed (Communities and Wellbeing) has a target of saving £1.9 million by 2016. Of this it is proposed to explore how £800K could be saved across the rural libraries, which collectively account for around 27% of overall library business. At the moment these are proposals only. Cabinet will have to approve the MTFS in February, and if they do, then further details of how the savings might be made will be made clearer, and be the subject of further consultation, most likely from April. There have been some informal explorations of how different partnerships can come together, and this is helping form a range of options for communities that will become clearer if the cabinet approve the MTFS in February. In the meantime, it’s important to use the feedback channels to let us know what you think of the MTFS proposals before that decision is made.

The County expect to continue to run our town libraries but they will explore communityrunning of our smaller libraries and possible co-location with other organisations, such as parish councils. The County may have to close libraries if we can't find partners. Smaller libraries are already not the best used and we’ve reflected that by reducing opening hours. What will be the terms of conditions, will groups have to buy books etc? The County are still working on the detail but the broad proposal is for the County Council to offer professional support from its libraries service on a tapering basis to help develop the understanding needed. We have been following the work of other local authorities who have been more advanced in this to learn lessons from them. We also have a significant volunteer network working with the service already and we hope that we can encourage greater involvement from those experienced volunteers to help. Is this just a proposal at the minute? Yes, it is just a proposal at this stage and is highly likely to be followed by a further period of consultation before final implementation is agreed. When will a final decision be taken? We will be producing more detailed proposals which will be considered by Cabinet at a later date. In the meantime, people can comment

I am very passionate about the Library Service and will do anything to protect it for the community I serve. I personally believe that the Library service is such an important part of our community, as it serves some of the most vulnerable people in our community. I will be petitioning to keep our service through the scrutiny process as Ratby Library has been identified as one of those to be transferred to Community Management. My objective is to try and make sure Ratby library remains open, but to achieve this option Ratby residents would have to take responsibility for managing and running this facility with assistance from the library service and Parish Council. The Parish Council are positively looking like me to protect our Library. No decisions have yet been taken as I said earlier all will all become clearer in early February when the Cabinet have made their decisions. Any reductions or changes will not be immediate, but I would like to start planning now. I am working closely with your Parish Council, so I am therefore asking for volunteers to give up a few hours per week to ensure that Ratby is guaranteed a library for the foreseeable future.

Consultation on Proposed Changes to School Transport Policy - Closing Date 12th March 2014. The County Council is proposing a policy that would provide free transport to the nearest academy or maintained school only - if this is over two miles for children in primary education and over three miles for children in secondary education. This is the nearest school or academy to the child's home address which has available places at the time when school places are allocated. It may not necessarily be the admissions catchment area school or one of the preferred schools applied for in the admissions process. You can respond to the consultation by submitting an online questionnaire - www.leics.gov.uk/school_college_transport You can also see the proposed policy changes via the above page link. If you would like a paper copy of the consultation please contact Customer Services on 0116 305 0002 Please submit your views on this consultation by the 12th March 2014. Bus stop transfer of Location Station Road, Ratby Due to the ongoing works on the Geary’s site and the new entrance that is due to be created, the current bus stop is being moved to a temporary location opposite the Parish Council offices. When the work on site is completed there will be a new permanent bus stop located towards the end of the Geary’s building opposite no 31 and 33 station Road. I have asked for Bus Stop markings to be placed on the road which will help prevent parking which was a major concern for residents facing this site. There is also a possibility of a shelter being erected but without seats. TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF: IVANHOE TRAIL BRIDLEWAY R115, FOOTPATH R116 (PART) & FOOTPATH R118 (PART) IN GLENFIELD & RATBY.

Ratby Village Society

March: the month of self-harm awareness

Cancellation - Through lack of response from those exhibitors invited to attend, it is with regret that we have been forced to cancel the ‘Great Outdoors’ event, which had been due to take place on 12th April.

More than 22,000 children and teenagers were treated in hospital in 2012 for selfharming. And they were just the ones who were discovered.

Meetings - Meetings are held in Ratby Village Hall, Main Street, Ratby at 8pm on the third Tuesday monthly except July, August and December, when there are no meetings.

Self-harming has been called the new anorexia. An astonishing amount of young people are cutting themselves. Sadly, unlike anorexia, cutting can be kept secret for much longer. What can possibly be the attraction of causing yourself pain, bleeding and scarring? Many self-harmers seemed tortured by feelings of intense self-hatred and loathing, and say that this is a way of reducing the intense emotional pressure that they feel. Some experts believe that the contemporary craze for tattoos is a part of this desire to seek emotional relief through self-inflicted pain. Whatever is going on, self-harmers are starting ever younger- in 2012 cases involving children under 14 rose by 30 per cent.

Admission: members £1.60, casual guests £2.50 including refreshments. 18th February: AGM 18th March: Egyptology - Dr Susan Tebby 15th April: Technology of the English Country House - a talk

There is a website www.selfharm.co.uk which is run by Christians, and which gives people information about self-harm, points out helpful organisations, and provides resources such as teaching packs. There is also a forum so that young people can post their stories, poems, and artwork and encourage each other. The site is monitored, to keep it safe.

by Wendy Freer. Annual Show - The Annual Show will take place on Saturday 9th August 2014 at Ratby Sports Club, Desford Lane, Ratby. The show is open to everyone - you don’t have to live in Ratby to enter. Schedules will be available shortly.

NHS 111 service update Further to our last update the NHS 111 service across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland was fully rolled out on schedule by November 2013. Since then it has continued to perform well with key performance indicators well in excess of the government target of 95% of calls answered within 60 seconds.

96.01% of calls answered within 60 seconds and only 0.48% calls abandoned after 30 seconds. Around a third of calls during Christmas week were on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and the busiest period of the week was between 8.00am and 12 noon on Boxing Day.

Christmas traditionally sees an increase in patient flow across the urgent and emergency healthcare system. We prepared a robust capacity management strategy in conjunction with NHS England and our provider, Derbyshire Health United to ensure that the NHS 111 service was able to manage projected increases in calls.

The percentage of patient referrals from NHS 111 to other parts of the urgent care system such as the ambulance service, urgent care centres and walk in centres has been as expected. This means that the NHS 111 service locally has not created difficulties for other parts of the healthcare system. Ensuring that NHS 111 provides our patients with a safe, high quality service continues to be of paramount importance to us.

As a result of this the service continued to perform well during the entire Christmas and new year period which saw a 28% increase in call volumes (less than projected) compared to the first week in December. The increase in staffing during the holiday period ensured that call response times were strong with

The Kirby Muxloe Players As I write this article our pantomime Dick Whittington is drawing to a close. A very big thank you to all who came to see us, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. But even as we are performing, plans have been afoot. In the intention of entering into the Leicestershire one-act festival, The Players intend to hold their own one act festival for one night only. Our juniors are taking to the stage in a piece entitled ‘The People’. The adults have picked a twosome out of ‘The Deckchairs’ series and ‘The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish’ are to be performed. Two new directors and several new actors have come forward to help us in this venture. So do come and join us for a relaxed and entertaining evening of theatre as you sit around tables with your friends. We can’t promise waiter service to the bar this time but we do offer crisps and nibbles all for £5.00 only, where else could you get such value? The all important date is Thursday 27th February, our usual start time 7.30pm. Tickets are available on the door at the Kirby Muxloe Village Hall, Station Road but if you want to make sure of a seat you can always call our box office no 0780404350235 or go to our website www.kirbyplayers.co.uk.

What pensioners really want

With Spring on the way, here is good news: pottering around the garden is a pensioner’s favourite past time, according to a recent poll. Gardening is the hobby which gives 38 per cent of over 65s the most pleasure in life. This is followed by going for walks, reading a newspaper, talking to friends and listening to the radio, according to the charity Age UK. “Having a positive attitude and being able to enjoy the little pleasures of life is really important for our well-being,” says Age UK.

Gable Events and Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, launch the sixth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Horse, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has joined with Gable Events to launch the sixth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge. The 2014 Dragon Boat Challenge takes place on Sunday 3rd August as part Pictures from previous Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat of the annual Riverside Festival Challenges, courtesy of Gable Events picture library and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Up to 40 crews representing companies, organisations, clubs and groups of friends from all over the East Midlands are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment raising much-needed funds for the Hospice. Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history and the Festival is a re-enactment of a tragic event that took place more than 2,000 years ago in the kingdom of Chu. Legend has it that falsely accused of treason and exiled by jealous rivals in the government, despairing warrior poet, Qu Yuan, threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen paddled out to save the drowning poet and tried to rescue him from vicious fish by beating the water with their paddles. But their attempts failed and every year in Hong Kong and all over China a Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival is held as a mark of respect for the fishermen’s frantic efforts and to commemorate the tragic death of Qu Yuan. The dragon boat’s fierce looking dragon’s heads were added later to ward off evil spirits and in Hong Kong special dumplings are eaten to represent the dumplings that were thrown in to the river to stop the fish eating the mighty Qu’s body. According to the Chinese calendar, 2014 is the Year of the Horse and the horse is one of the Chinese favourite animals. Horses are deemed to be intelligent, like to compete with others and can give people a good, quick ride to their destination. They are therefore not only a symbol of traveling, but also a sign of speedy success which augurs well for the teams in the dragon boat challenge! No previous experience is required to take part in the dragon boat racing, just plenty of team spirit so why not take up the challenge? Thankfully, you don’t need the physical strength of a Steve Redgrave or the athleticism of a Jessica Ennis-Hill to be successful as teamwork and timing win the day. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. The Challenge’s official charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, is the only children's hospice in the East Midlands and cares for over 230 local children and their families every year. Katie Baxter, Events Manager at Rainbows Hospice, says, "The Dragon Boat Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for Rainbows as it gives us a chance to raise essential funds with the help of the local community. Thanks to everyone involved, we are able to continue to be there.” The top fundraisers for Rainbows will win the charity trophy plus a special prize meal kindly donated by The Oriental Pearl Chinese restaurant, based in West Bridgford, not far from where the Challenge takes place. Carol Lester, Director of Challenge organisers, Gable Events, adds; “The Challenge is a great chance to try something completely different, enjoy a fabulous day out and raise money for Rainbows. It is also a fantastic team building opportunity - what better way to get to know what makes your colleagues and competitors tick? August may seem a long way off but we are expecting the Dragon Boat Challenge to be extremely popular this year so we strongly urge teams to sign up early in order to secure a place”. For further information and an entry form please visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/nottingham or call Gable Events on 01780 470 718. It’s a 999 Emergency calling all ladies to raise funds for LOROS

LFE Film Evenings

Following the huge success of last year’s Twilight Walk, which raised over £36,000, the LOROS Fundraising team are in full swing preparing for this year’s event on Saturday 26th April. Ladies from across the county will take over the King Power Stadium in Leicester in preparation for the 10km sponsored walk. This year’s “999 Emergency” themed Twilight Walk is sure to be the BIGGEST GIRLS NIGHT OUT Leicester has ever seen and the BIGGEST Twilight Walk yet!

LFE Film Evenings will feature on Thursday 7 March “The Great Gatsby” Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire and Elizabeth Debicki The film follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings.

This special night in Leicester annually unites sisters, mothers, daughters, friends, partners and colleagues from all over the East Midlands to have fun, remember loved ones and raise money for their local Hospice. The unique atmosphere at the event makes it one night you will not want to miss!

Chasing his own American dream, Nick lands next door to mysterious, party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.

Laura Betts, Fundraiser at LOROS said; “One of my most memorable days at LOROS was at the Annual LOROS Twilight Walk 2013. The team and I had spent months planning and preparing for this day and it was fantastic to see all the participants taking part. The atmosphere on the evening was electric and although the team had worked from 9am through until midnight you couldn’t help but feel energised by all the smiling faces around you. I didn’t make it home until nearly 1am and although I was completely shattered I couldn’t sleep because I was still buzzing!!”.

It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

The theme “999 Emergency” encourages participants to dress up as Doctors, Nurses, Firegirls or Policewomen – merchandise for this event is available on the event’s website. We also look forward to seeing all the ladies creative ideas! The first 50 ladies to sign up will receive a promotional glow-in-the-dark badge with a Sharpie marker.

Stars include: Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Debicki, and Joel Edgerton

To see more details about the event, a course map and to register please visit www.thetwilightwalk.co.uk Any queries, please call fundraising on 0116 231 8431/2.

Running time: 2hr 25min - Rated 12A. Venue: the Parish Hall, Kings Drive, LFE. Cost: £5. Doors open at 7.00pm when a complimentary hot drink and biscuits will be provided. The film will start at 7.30pm.

Please note this is a ladies only event, but men, if you would like to join this crowd of amazing women, the organisers have plenty of opportunities for volunteers available on the night. Please call the LOROS Fundraising Department on 0116 2318431/2 for more information.

Health Matters in yourLOCAL... The Month of Valentines and the National Heart Month As Valentine’s Day approaches near, everyone will be thinking with their heart, so I thought it appropriate to write an article on the heart and what we can do to keep it healthy. Your heart is a vital organ; it is basically a pump that keeps blood moving around your body. It delivers oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body and carries away unwanted carbon dioxide and waste products. Each day your heart beats about 100,000 times, and pumps about 23,000 litres of blood around your body. It is amazing what it does without us even thinking about it. However with such an impressive pump, there are a number of things that can go wrong. I have listed a few below: Abnormal heart rhythms: - Your heart rhythm is controlled via electrical signals, when there is a problem with the electrical signals you may experience palpitations (where your heart beats abnormally fast, slow or irregular). Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common abnormal heart rhythms. Symptoms of AF can include an irregular pulse, tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness, feeling faint or palpitations. AF is one of the main causes of strokes (where a blood clot reaches the brain.) This is because as your heart is pumping inefficiently; it can cause a pooling of blood at the bottom of the heart which can then clot. When this happens the clot can travel to different parts of the body. If it reaches the brain you can potentially have a stroke. If you feel that you have any of the above symptoms you should see your GP. Angina: - This is pain felt in the chest often described as tightness; it can be brought on by a number of things such as physical activity or emotional upset. Angina can be caused by Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). This is when your coronary arteries (the arteries that supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood) become narrowed by a gradual build-up of fatty material within their walls. When there is a large build-up of fatty material it causes a strain on your heart when pumping blood around the body. This leads to symptoms such as tightening of the chest. If you have not been diagnosed with angina and you have these symptoms along with pain in your arms,

throat, neck or jaw, you should stop what you’re doing and rest and if you are not allergic to aspirin, you should take 300mg and call 999 for an ambulance as you may be having a Heart Attack High blood pressure or hypertension – means that your blood pressure is constantly higher than the recommended level. High blood pressure is not usually something that you can feel or notice, but over time if it is not treated, your heart may become enlarged making your heart pump less effectively, which could lead to heart failure. Having high blood pressure increases your chance of having a heart attack or stroke. This is why it is recommended that your blood pressure is well controlled. As many as 5 million people in the UK are walking around, undiagnosed, with high blood pressure. Knowing how important your heart is and the things that can go wrong, it is vital to keep your heart healthy. There are a number of small things that you can do. Keeping active and exercising regularly is fundamental. Remember it’s never too late to start. The recommended amount of moderate exercise/activity per week is a total of 150 minutes of per week. Another important aspect of keeping a healthy heart is a healthy diet. A healthy diet is a well-balanced diet and should include 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. You should keep an eye on the amount of fat in the diet and choose the right types of fat. You should

cut down on saturated fats replacing them with small amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fats. You should cut down on foods containing trans fats and also reduce the overall amount of fat that is in your diet. If you drink alcohol, it is important to stay within the recommended guidelines. For men it is 3 to 4 units per day, and for women it is 2 to 3 units per day. Smoking is very unhealthy as it is a major contributor in clogging your arteries which puts a lot of strain on your heart. If you are smoking then you should stop. If you would like any information about anything mentioned above, to join the stop smoking clinic, get advice on diet and exercise or get your blood pressure checked for free The Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe is happy to help, just walk in or call us on 0116 2387353. Seeing the doctor - for loneliness Up to 10 patients a day visit each GP surgery because they are simply lonely. And nearly half of doctors say they are not confident that they can help their condition. Those are the findings of a recent survey carried out for the Campaign to End Loneliness. “Far too many people are feeling so lonely - and are at a loss about what to do about it - that they end up going to see their doctor,” says director Kate Jopling. She is calling for a more co-ordinated public health response that targets resources to help support lonely people. Figures suggest that almost three million people over 65 are lonely.

The “Blaby District Means Business” meeting starts at 7.30am with the promise of a free tasty breakfast on arrival followed by a brief speaker programme, with news of apprenticeships plus free skills development and support programmes for businesses in the area. Councillor Tony Greenwood, portfolio holder for Planning, Economic Development and Housing Strategy at Blaby District Council, said: “The Council recognises that local businesses can benefit from support and they may not realise what is out there to make a difference locally. “Small to medium sized enterprises are encouraged to book up to hear about funding, skills and support programmes that may benefit them.” The programme includes speakers from South Leicestershire College and Nottingham Business Venture plus the chance to network with local business people. To book and reserve your place please contact Carole Troake, Economic Development Officer at Blaby District Council on 0116 2727735 or email economicdevelopment@blaby.gov.uk
