Local Children Get Planting In Kirby The Cookes of Kirby would like to thank the 2nd Kirby Muxloe Brownies and their parents for volunteering to give up some of their time on a Sunday to help plant outside of the Cemetery. They were Tegan Grewal, Amelie Farrar and Natalie Jackson and Jane Mugglestone for organising this at very short notice. They all enjoyed a tour of the Cemetery as well!

A lovely group of children came down to the village hall and helped plant their sponsored planters from the Kirby Muxloe Primary School. The Deputy Head-teacher Nicholas D Holt brought Molly Taylor, Alice Shipway, Lucca Porsi-Carey, Daniel Ehrmann, William Atkinson-Lisle, Vivek Dhanjal, Ruby Herd and Lucy Lowe. Cookes of Kirby thought they were very well behaved and the children loved getting their hands dirty! It was an enjoyable morning, thank you for helping. Continued on page 4

Continued from front page: - The school and Cookes of Kirby are hoping to work together again in future projects like this, helping the school children to know more about their local community and Eco projects and getting more hands on. If anyone else would like to get involved or have any ideas please contact either Cookes of Kirby or Mr. Nicholas Holt at the primary school. We have a lovely village with lots of events, community groups and local business and this is what makes our village special. Hope you will enjoy it.

Multiple Successes For Dixie Grammar School Student Christian Smaditch, 14, a student at The Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth, has had a busy couple of months. He has been awarded the Leicestershire’s Lord Lieutenant’s Award for Young People 2014; was highest scorer in an international language competition ‘Vocab Express’; has completed an Open University undergraduate module and been nominated as a Heartsafe Ambassador. As winner of The Lord-Lieutenant’s Award in the Young Artist Category. Christian, from Leicester Forest East, who is an accomplished piano and French horn player, was recognised for his personal achievements, which include passing his Royal Schools of Music Piano Diploma (dipABRSM), as well as for sharing his love of music with the community through playing at many concerts and public events. He was presented with the award by the Lord-Lieutenant, Jennifer, Lady Gretton JP at an awards ceremony which took place at County Hall in Glenfield. Christian was also the highest scorer in Hebrew and Polish in the Vocab Express Global Challenge, an international language competition, where he scored 63,945 points, beating 28,000 other students from around the world, helping the School to win the Challenge Cup Piccolo

The Parish Council and Cookes of Kirby would like to thank the following local village business's and community groups for supporting the "sponsor a planter for the village" for this second year. This has been funded by the support of the sponsors. Hair Cut 2000 - Thomson's Newsagents Kirby Muxloe Primary School - Castle Hotel St. Bartholomew Church. - The Free Church Kidarooo. - John Berry - Kirby Muxloe flower guild, Champion Wedding Cars of Kirby Muxloe Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club - 2nd Kirby Muxloe Brownies Cookes of Kirby garden & grave care services Kirby Muxloe Women's Institute - Kirby Muxloe Players

He has also spent time over the past few months completing an Open University (OU) undergraduate module, Molecules, Medicines and Drugs: A Chemical Story. This module explores the discovery and development of a variety of drugs and medicines, all which relieve pain, alleviate symptoms, minimise the risk of infection and effect cures. A module, normally, undertaken by Sixth Formers or undergraduate students. Finally Christian has also become a school ambassador for the Leicestershire Secondary Schools Heartsafe programme. Christian said “I am honoured that I was awarded the Lord-Lieutenant’s Award for Young People. It came as a complete surprise but I was especially pleased that I had the opportunity to meet so many other amazing young people and hear about their inspiring and life-changing stories. I was also very proud to be associated with the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust and to win the inaugural Memorial Award was very humbling. “I am also very happy to have been part of a winning language team. Vocab Express is a lot of fun and it was great the School won the cup. My OU module will help me with my career ambition to become a doctor and becoming a part of the Heartsafe programme will compliment that as well.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

It starts off with lots of activities based on a Bible  story (so far we have looked at creation and the story of Noah) ranging from water play, painting  making giant models with and cardboard boxes. After that there is a short story, song (usually with actions) and a look at the Bible story in a little more detail. Finally we have a tea with sandwiches, cakes as well as that well learnt cuppa for the parents and grandparents.

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Planning Application by Cawrey Homes Ltd. for 134 houses in open countryside south of Markfield Rd, Ratby. We have been contacted by many residents who are strongly opposed to this most unwelcome planning application which they believe is only the start of a wider ambition by developers to cover this whole area of land including the Burroughs recreation area with hundreds of extra houses over the next few years and have asked us to compile a list of their objections to share with fellow residents. Cawrey Ltd have been asked by officers to provide more information and are claiming viability issues in order to avoid providing the full affordable housing percentage they say it is not viable we say if it is not viable don’t build it. Due to these ongoing issues this application will not be heard by the Borough Council Planning Committee until either the July meeting due to be held on Tuesday 22nd July or the August meeting which is due to be held on Tuesday 19th August 2014. Residents can make objections right up to the night of the Committee meeting. Sound planning reasons are needed to object to this application these may include: •

Development in the open countryside contrary to HBBC Policy NE5

•

Outside the settlement boundary contrary to HBBC Policy RES5

•

Highway safety – does not comply with HBBC Policy T5

•

New Co-Op Building in Ratby. We have been contacted by concerned residents who have reported that there has been no activity on site over the past few weeks and that things seem to have come to a halt. Ozzy has contacted the agent who has confirmed that they have had to stop work as they need to carry out pavement crossover work and the County Council has put an embargo on road works until after 30th June due to the amount of other road works in the village. We have been assured the Co-Op building is due to start at the end of July.

•

Sustainability – No spare capacity in local schools in either Ratby or Groby, local infrastructure already stretched to bursting by planning permission for 102 houses already granted without the requisite funding for infrastructure improvements having been secured.

Meet Your New Local Pharmacy Neil White, is our driver. He is the face of the pharmacy for our customers who are housebound. He is loved by many customers and has great customer service. Zaheer Kassam, is the general manager. He is also the brother of Irfan. He manages the day to day running of the pharmacy utilising his extensive managerial experience. From the bottom left Bernard Omara, he is a pharmacy masters graduate and a great addition to the team. He joined us the start of the year and has now become an asset to the team.

The Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe has a long history from first opening pre-World War ll, then being bombed in world war ll and subsequent closure. It then re-opened in another premises, and in recent times over the past 8 years been owned by Mr Irfan Kassam and family. The Pharmacy has evolved throughout the 8 years of ownership and is now regarded as one of the best pharmacies for medicines and advice. The Pharmacy and staff have 5 star reviews on the NHS choices website. ‘At the Village Pharmacy we pride ourselves on always giving the best customer service and will always put patients first’ ‘We Always Provide Excellence in Healthcare’ As the pharmacy is not next to a GP surgery they do not have a natural ‘walk in’ prescription flow. They rely heavily on the loyalty of their customers for which they are extremely grateful. They order and collect prescription from all surgeries throughout Leicester and Leicestershire and deliver the medicines to your home or place of work. They do this as a completely free service and anyone can join at any time. ‘We have the belief that we are the best pharmacy service provider and we make sure that all our customers are satisfied. A recent NHS survey showed a 100% satisfaction response for the pharmacy, this was a big boost for the pharmacy staff to know that they are appreciated and to carry on providing a high level of care.’ Very recently, Irfan Kassam and his team embarked on a project to provide as many NHS funded health services as possible, they now provide an NHS stop smoking service, Medication use reviews, New Medicines service, Dossete trays, NHS ‘morning after pill’ and now also provide free training of nurses and carers in a care home setting. As the NHS cannot fund every service, they have also decided to go along the private route. ‘We aim to be providing at least 15 different private services including the flu vaccination before the end of the year.’

They have recently had a complete makeover and have a new consultation room in order to provide these extra services. The look of the pharmacy has been completely transformed from a dated shop to a vibrant, young, clean pharmacy. ‘We are really happy with the look of the shop as it now reflects the level of service we provide. We often get asked whether we are now part of a group, the answer is NO and this pharmacy will always remain an Independent pharmacy with no multi-national company influence. We intend on serving the community not the high-level company shareholders of large pharmacies’ So there you have it your new pharmacy with the same original values. They may look and feel like a large national company, but the day to day service is the same as it has always been. Now let’s meet Mr Irfan Kassam and his team with over 50 years of pharmacy experience between them. Starting from the top left. Irfan Kassam, he is the Superintendent pharmacist, and has worked in Hospitals as well as community pharmacies. He has an in depth knowledge of drugs and is now using this to help train Nurses and Carers in a care home setting. Fayaz Valera, he is a pharmacy student waiting to become a pharmacist. He is a fast learner and has absorbed a lot of knowledge during his training year.

Ish Mansoor, he is a fully qualified pharmacist with many years of experience. Trained by Irfan during his training year and now works 3 and a half days a week. Marie Green, is a local girl who also works for the hospital, she is training to be a healthcare assistant at the pharmacy. Elizabeth Goodwin, been a dispenser since she was 16 and remembers the times when medicines were manufactured in the dispensary. She has been with the pharmacy the longest, actually starting on the same day as Irfan. Beverley Underwood, a retail expert, and has worked for many well-known retailers. She is training to be a healthcare assistant. Kathleen Satchwell, is the organiser of the pharmacy, she has worked for many large companies managing and organising large teams. She is also training to be a healthcare assistant. The brilliant staff at the pharmacy will always make sure that your visit is exceptional. So take a look at your brand new local pharmacy and see what they can offer you, from retail, to advice and prescriptions. ‘We Provide Excellence in Healthcare.’ ‘We are thankful to all our customers and to our staff for making the Pharmacy what it is today. We welcome new customers to join us as it is our customers that make us what we are. We will continue to re-invest into the community so that the health of the community can improve.’

Oddfellows Brass, Markfield

The RSPCA Woodside’s animal centre at Leicester has opened a tea room! Why don’t you come along and have a drink and a piece of home made cake? It opens the 1st and 3rd Saturday every month, between the hours of 11.00 to 2.30pm It will give you an opportunity to visit all the beautiful animals in our care and relax with a cup of tea in a china tea cup. Our cakes range from real dairy cream Victoria sandwich to a fudgy chocolate cake. There are many special offers and handmade crafts on sale.

'As the renovations to the old Mission Hall in Markfield come towards a close, the Oddfellows Brass are also rebuilding their band. Formed in the mid 1980's under its current conductor and MD Robert Boulter, the band has progressed steadily over the years and even spent some time in the Championship Section before a series of illness and job changes forced a re-think.

The Woodside animal centre receives no money from the government or from the national lottery. It takes £18.000 each week to run the centre; so it is vital to keep new fund raising ideas coming and getting your support. In conjunction with the opening of our new tea room, we are promoting a recipe competition. Send your favourite recipe to us with some of its history. Was it your Grandmothers? or does it hold some special memory? Those chosen will be printed in the new Woodside’s recipe book. To be published for Christmas.

Now, the band is scouring for new and enthusiastic young players to move us through the summer. We play in some very prestigious venues as we perform for our sponsors and for other organisations. Understanding that young people are the future of the culture, we are not only looking for established players to fill positions in the Senior Band, but young people to experience 'Beginners Blow' - and for those with time to spare during the day, an ensemble to perform at special occasions.

“I don’t see the point in measuring life in time any more. I’d rather measure life in terms of making a difference” - Stephen Sutton

WILL YOU BE ‘A BIT MORE STEPHEN’?

M

any of us have heard of Stephen Sutton, the teenager with terminal cancer who shot to fame with his bucket list. The country seemed to pull together to help him achieve his dreams; from breaking a world record, to hugging an elephant and having a tattoo! But his most famous item on the list was to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, he has now raised over £3.7 million pounds, the largest single amount raised on any Just Giving Page! He managed this by having fun, organising events for others to enjoy and not giving up or withdrawing from society.

• Teenage Cancer Trust empowers young people to take control of their health and speak up when something changes. Their pioneering Education team deliver positive and interactive free cancer awareness sessions in schools, colleges and universities on the signs of cancer, cancer treatments and prevention as well as healthy living.

I’ve decided to take a closer look at the Teenage Cancer Trust in Leicestershire and wonder if we could each be ‘a bit more Stephen’ and push ourselves to raise funds for charity?

• Between them these units support 125 young adults with cancer. The running cost of the Leicester unit alone is over £120,000 per year.

• Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. • They build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. They want every young person with cancer cess to this to have access specialist support, no ere they live. matter where nally • Traditionally ongside treated alongside children orr tients elderly patients at the end of their lives,, young people cann feel extremely isolated atment, during treatment, er some never meeting another young person with cancer.

14

Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference.

• Our Teenage Cancer Trust unit is    with the next nearest being Nottingham City Hospital.

• They rely on donations to do their vital work and are always looking for support from the local community to organise fundraising events. Stephen sadly passed away on the 14th May but was fundraising up to the week of his death. I hope he has inspired many people to think about what they could achieve for the many charities that need our support. If The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that you would like to support please contact heather. bowen@teenagecancertrust.org alternatively there are many other charities featured in this month’s magazine so please see if you can   I know I’m going to try and be ‘a bit more Stephen’ are you?

Canasta

ROLLS- ROYCE RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

Do you play – or would you like to learn.?

The Rolls- Royce Retired Employees Association visited the National Memorial Arboretum for their June excursion where the members had a very emotional but enjoyable day wandering around the numerous memorials and natural walks at this popular destination. Afterwards they visited the Royal British Legion Club at Alrewas where they enjoyed a buffet tea. The Walking Groups July’s walk was at centred at Hathern with the walk being over fields and footpaths, a distance of 5.3 miles. It was a warm and sunny day and the cool breeze coming off the River Soar, it certainly did the 29 walkers a power of good. Lunch was taken at "The Kings Arms" Hathern.

Canasta is played with two packs of cards. Each player tries to collect as many Canastas as possible. A Canasta is a group of 7 cards all the same number, with or without jokers/ wild cards and is built from a starting group of 3 cards. The game can be played in teams or as individuals. It is not a childs game!

Two more events will be held this summer as part of a campaign by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to encourage more dog owners to have their pets micro-chipped. For a cost of just £10, the Dog Warden will micro-chip any dogs that are taken along to: Markfield Community Centre, Mayflower Close, Markfield on Tuesday 29 July between 1pm and 3pm. Micro-chipping is now the quickest and easiest way for a lost pet to be identified by the Dog Warden, or by a vet, and returned to its rightful owner. Without microchipping, it is estimated that less than half of the animals that go missing each year are reunited with their owners. From 2016 it will be a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com support the Library service and I will keep residents fully updated.

Superfast Broadband Update (SFBB) The first communities to benefit from the £18.6M County-council led project to bring SFBB to as many premises across the county as possible were announced in June 2014. LCC hopes to deliver SFBB to 96% of homes and businesses by end of March 2016. Please check this link http://www.superfastleicester shire.org.uk/when-and-where/ for more information. However, some 18,000 premises will not be able to access superfast speeds (“the final 4%”). To address this, the County Council has indicatively won £3.7M from the Government’s Superfast Extension Programme, the Cabinet will hear proposals to allocate a further £2M in July, with additional funding sought from the LLEP and a further contribution from the District Councils. If implemented, this will halve the number of properties without superfast speeds to about 9,000 with the remaining gap plugged by flexibilities in BT’s contracts and community and commercial solutions. The Future of Libraries The County Council has had around 2,000 responses and over 1,000 people have attended meetings across the County. The County Council held public meetings at Groby Village Hall 6th May and at Ratby Church Rooms on 16th June. I am grateful to the many people who attended to hear about how our libraries could become community run partnerships and I am in close contact with the parish councils. The consultation runs until July 7th and the Cabinet will consider responses in September. I totally

Highways Issues We always have some complaints from residents about overgrown verges, particularly at junctions, at this time of year. Wet weather was followed by warm weather and that is a recipe for mad grass growth! However, County officers work like mad to keep on top of the issues, but if anyone has any concerns regarding visibility, call the team on 0116 305 0001 or drop me a line and I will try and get it sorted. The good news is the County Council has been awarded £2.5M to tackle potholes by the Government and part-night lighting has been a success. Despite some complaints, hard evidence from the police shows that crime has actually fallen in areas with part-night lighting and it is only introduced if the police have no concerns. Residents in Groby will remember our success in getting the lights switched back on along Sacheverell Way after residents raised their concerns with me. Big Challenges Most people now understand that the County Council must save £110M from its budget. The Chancellor announced a one year extension to planned austerity measures until 2018 in his March Budget. This means the County Council has to find an extra £30M savings, with reducing government grant and a continuing freeze in the County-element of the council tax. The County Council’s Transformation Programme is concentrated on fundamentally changing the way we provide and deliver our services- concentrating our limited funds on our key priorities like vulnerable people, closer working with the NHS and encouraging communities to take over some services, like libraries. We are changing

KIRBY MUXLOE SOCIAL CARE FAIR Your dog A showcase for caring services in Kirby Muxloe could die this summer

Kirby Muxloe, August 2, 2014– Caring organisations and providers are coming together to showcase their services to the local community in a free event organized by the Churches of Kirby Muxloe. “The Social Care Fair is a practical initiative designed to inform local residents of the assistance and funding available to those with disabilities, the elderly and carers. I am delighted to support this valuable event” [The Rt. Hon. Stephen Dorrell, MP]

Here is an ideal opportunity for the elderly, the disabled of any age, carers and anyone else in need of help around the home to discover for themselves the assistance that is available to them, from a wide range of agencies and charities. [Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Councillor] All kinds of organisations will be present, from the East Midlands Ambulance Service and the local Police, national groups like Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society and the Parkinson’s Society, many of our local Care Homes, Home Care providers, Podiatrists, Dieticians and many more. There will be free advice, information, and refreshments available all day. Minister of Kirby Muxloe Free Church, Rev. Bob Almond, says: “there are some people in our community who need support, but simply haven’t heard what is available to them, from the Churches, statutory agencies, or charitable groups. We wanted to make sure the news gets around.” The day runs from 10:30 am – 3pm, and transport can be provided by arrangement with the Blaby ‘Commbus’ service.



If you would like more information about this topic, please contact Bob Almond at 01162392731 or email at bob@revbob.org.

When it comes to leaving your dog in the car in the summer months, DON’T. Just 20 minutes in a hot car can kill a dog, even if you leave a window down. The Dogs Trust warns it is an agonising death, as the dog is slowly roasting alive. (Dogs can only sweat through panting.) The Trust warns: “People think that opening a window or leaving their car in the shade is fine, but we know that it is absolutely NOT the case. If you are going somewhere where you know you cannot take your dog, then leave it at home, because a dog can die in as little as 20 minutes.” Sadly, while a survey found that 28% of people are willing to risk their dog being left in a car, only 10% would ever dream of leaving their mobile phone in a car.

Everyone loves the warm weather, it lifts everyone’s mood and makes us feel good. However, it is not just us that love the hot weather. Many creepy crawlies love the hot weather too, so when we are out in our shorts and t-shirts, the buzzing bees, marching ants and swarms of midges are out too. Normally they will be minding their own business enjoying the weather and if we don’t disrupt them they will have no reason to sting or bite us. Insect bites and stings are very common and usually only cause minor irritation. In the UK, insects that bite include midges, mosquitoes, fleas, bedbugs and - although not strictly insects - spiders, mites and ticks, which are arachnids. Insects that sting include bees, wasps and hornets. When an insect bites, it releases saliva that can cause the skin around the bite to become red, swollen and itchy. When an insect stings it releases venom which causes a swollen, itchy, red mark (a weal) to form on the skin. This can be painful but it's harmless in most cases. The affected area will usually remain painful and itchy for a few days. Sometimes, insect bites can become infected. Symptoms of an infected insect bite may include, pus in or around the bite, swollen glands, increasing redness, swelling and pain around the bite. Some bites will naturally be red and swollen, but for other types of bites these symptoms may not be normal and could indicate an infection. If you think that your bite is infected you should see your GP. The severity of bites and stings varies depending on the type of insect involved and the sensitivity of the person. In rare cases, some people can have a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a bite or sting that requires immediate medical treatment. If you have any of the following symptoms after being bitten or stung call 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance: • Wheezing, hoarseness, difficulty breathing • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea • A fast heart rate • Dizziness or feeling faint • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) • A swollen face or mouth • Confusion, anxiety or agitation The above symptoms indicate a systemic (whole body) reaction as opposed to a localised reaction. Although they may not be fatal, they still require immediate medical attention. In most cases insect bites and stings usually clear up within several hours and can be

safely treated at home. Different insects can cause different reactions, below are a few common bites and stings in the UK. Midges, mosquitoes and gnats often cause small papules (lumps) to form on your skin that are usually very itchy. Mosquito bites in certain areas of tropical countries can cause malaria. A bite from a horsefly can be very painful. Horseflies cut the skin when they bite, rather than piercing it, so horsefly bites can take a long time to heal and can cause an infection. Tick bites are not usually painful and sometimes only cause a red lump to develop where you were bitten. Ticks can carry a bacterial infection called Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease (A tick-borne infection which can affect muscles, joints and nerves.) If Lyme disease is not treated, it can be serious. A wasp or hornet sting causes a sharp pain in the area you are stung and usually lasts just a few seconds. A swollen, red mark will often then form on the skin, which can be itchy and painful. A bee sting feels similar to a wasp sting at first. However, if you are stung by a bee, it will leave its sting and a venomous sac in the wound. You should remove this immediately by scraping it out using something with a hard edge, such as a bank card. Do not pinch the sting out with your fingers or tweezers because you may spread the venom.

Chased by Cows?

 Keep to paths and be prepared for cattle to react (aggressively?) if you have a dog with you. Move quickly, quietly and calmly.  DON’T hang on to your dog if you are threatened – dogs can run much faster and reach safely quicker if you let them go. DON’T panic or run. If cattle follow you, just walk on quietly. NFU Mutual, the insurer who has given out the guidelines, says that about 500 people have been attacked and injured by cows in the past eight years. “Be aware of your surroundings,” urges NFU Mutual. “This is a working environment.”
