Local man faces ultimate fitness challenge to help Chernobyl children. A Leicester Forest East man is planning to climb the world’s highest freestanding mountain to help raise funds for a local charity that provides respite holidays in Leicestershire for children living with the after effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Gareth Reilly (33) will be embarking on a 7-day challenge to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in September and is hoping to raise £2500 for Friends of Chernobyl Children (West Leics). In 2011, Gareth made a New Year’s resolution to lose 5 stones which would of taken him back to what he weighed at the age of 21. Continued on page 4

Since 1917, when the first Lions club was formed, local Lions clubs have offered people just like you the opportunity to give something back to their communities, and although we cannot claim to go back that far, Bradgate Lions Club, who were founded in 1989, have helped Internationally, nationally and locally in projects to help deserving causes, and have so far raised and donated over £160.000 towards famine and disaster relief, national Cancer Charities, Children’s Charities and many local causes such as Hospices etc; We have also assisted in tree planting projects, provided transport to local groups, and undertaken gardening assistance. We are now looking to increase our membership in order to be able to continue with our work in the district, which covers a vast area, stretching from Desford and Leicester

Forest East in the South, across to Newtown Linford and Copt Oak in the North, and from Kirby Muxloe and Glenfield in the East over to Markfield and Thornton in the West. Local man faces ultimate fitness challenge to help Chernobyl children from front page After two years of diet and exercise, he succeeded in shedding 4 stones, but having reached a plateau and struggling for motivation, he decided that he needed to set himself a big challenge that would not only get him to his target weight, but would also raise some money for a worthy cause. Gareth was introduced to Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) by his girlfriend’s family who host a child from Belarus in their home for a month each summer. Inspired by their passion for the project and having seen for himself the huge difference a month of recuperative care makes to Chernobyl affected children, Gareth decided he would support the charity. With a summit of 5,895m above sea level and with oxygen levels 50% lower at the summit than at the base of the mountain, Kilimanjaro will be a formidable challenge for Gareth and in partnership with his personal trainer Dale Mellin, he has embarked upon a punishing training routine to prepare himself for the climb. This includes cardiovascular exercise, strength and conditioning training in the gym and in April, Dale will be putting Gareth through his paces with a training climb up Mount Snowdon. Gareth said “I am doing lots of stuff to get the heart pumping and Dale pushes me at every session. If everything goes to plan, I will be 10st 6lbs of lean muscle by September! I have to admit that I am a little worried about altitude sickness as there is no way of knowing if I will be affected or not until I am half way up the mountain, but fingers crossed, I will be ok. One thing is guaranteed, even if I have to do it on my hands and knees, I will get to the summit!” John Buckby, Group Coordinator for the charity said “In addition to all the hard work he is doing to prepare for his mammoth challenge, Gareth is funding the trip to Africa himself which means that every penny he raises through sponsorship will go directly to the charity and the life-changing respite holidays that we provide for needy youngsters from Belarus. Dog fouling on Ferndale Park, Ratby Despite numerous requests from Ratby Parish Council for dog owners to clean up after their animals, some continue to refuse to act responsibly by picking up their dogs’ mess and disposing of it in the bins provided. The picture below shows how some owners show utter contempt for the local bye laws and the health and safety of playing children. This owner has allowed their dog to foul within 8 feet of the dog bin and still not removed the mess. This shows that this owner simply doesn’t care what their dog does or where it does it, showing utter contempt for the area, the bye laws, other park users or the many responsible dog owners. Let’s ensure these individuals are identified, brought to court and fined. Hitting them in the pocket may be the only way such behaviour is changed for the better.

Will ratby stay a Village With More housing threatened? HBBC has received an outline application (14/00108/OUT) from Cawrey Homes for 134 dwellings on land south of Markfield Rd, namely the Burroughs. This area of land in Ratby was first put forward by the owner nearly 10 years ago but subsequently did not go ahead with the application due to massive opposition from village residents. That application involved an extremely large application that consisted of 500 dwellings, a wood burning facility and an industrial park. As we both sit on the planning committee, we can only take our steer from you, the residents, and therefore cannot comment on this application at the present time. Campaign tackles costly fly tipping Fly Tipping costs the taxpayers of Hinckley & Bosworth around £25,000 every year. From small deposits of one or two black sacks, through to full van loads of construction material, green waste and tyres, the Borough Council has to deal with about 40 incidents of fly tipping every month. We suffer from regular incidents of fly tipping in and around Ratby. So in the coming weeks, the council’s Clean Neighbourhoods team will be focusing on the problem as part of its continuing ‘Keep It Clean’ campaign. If it isn’t possible for householders or businesses to take their own waste to a tip site then people need to bear in mind their legal duty of care when it comes to employing anyone other than the council to remove the waste for them. Under this duty, householders are required to take reasonable measures to ensure that household waste produced on their property is passed on to an authorised person. Businesses that regularly carry waste should be registered with the Environment Agency as licensed waste carriers. Businesses also have to pay to dispose of waste, so always beware of being offered unusually low prices for this service coupled with the absence of the appropriate registration. As part of the duty of

Clean Neighbourhood Officer Luke Clements said: “We recommend to the public and businesses alike that they check for the waste carrier’s licence and also keep a record of the removal by using a waste transfer note. “This includes the carrier’s details, the waste that was given to them and when it was taken. This note needs to be signed by both parties.” We both urge residents to report any incidents of Fly Tipping. Apart from ruining our countryside it is also costing council taxpayers a lot of money to clean it up, money which could be spent on more important projects to benefit local residents. It is also worth remembering that for a small charge, the council will come and collect bulky items such as furniture, appliances and sheds etc. The team will also be increasing their deployment of CCTV cameras in a variety of known fly tipping hotspots. The maximum penalty on conviction for a fly tipping offence is £50,000 and the possibility of a one year prison sentence. The team are also encouraging everyone to report any fly tipping incidents they witness, especially if a vehicle registration can be provided. Cash Boost for Local Schools Welcomed

The money given to schools to help children from poorer backgrounds is set to rise again in Hinckley and Bosworth, local Councillor Michael Mullaney said today. The Pupil Premium - aimed at providing extra money to support youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds - is expected to increase in Hinckley and Bosworth to £2,582,000 in September 2014. Among the local schools set to benefit are, Ratby Primary School which is set to get £67,600 in Pupil Premium funding, South Charnwood High School who are due to receive £83,925 in Pupil Premium money, Stanton Under Bardon Primary School who are set to receive £13,000 in Pupil Premium funding and Mercenfeld Primary School who are set to get £53,500 Pupil Premium funding. The announcement came after figures also revealed the attainment gap between children eligible for Free School Meals and their peers continued to narrow.

Go Ukulele Crazy for Recreation Room Project Kirby Muxloe Free Church has started on an exciting project to refurbish some of the church rooms and create a Recreation Room. This will be a facility where anybody from the community or church groups using the facilities can meet, chat and relax in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Users will be able to make tea and coffee and eventually it is hoped to set-up a coffee shop. Go Ukulele Crazy is a group of more than 250 ukulele enthusiasts drawn from 10 separate groups from across the Midlands. These groups are run by Jo Stevenson, along with her husband John, and regularly play concerts for a variety of community groups. In a recent success the group participated in the Charity Gala Evening at Leicester Cathedral as part of Dave’s Comedy Festival, and has also appeared on Radio Leicester. On the evening of 28th March 2014 the two come together in a supper and ukulele concert in aid of the Recreation Room project. 1. Council tax has been frozen for the fourth consecutive year. Councillors agreed the freeze at the Budget meeting held on the 19th February. The average Band D property will continue to pay £1063 County share. However, Police Commissioner and Fire Authority will raise their precepts by 1.5% (£176 and £60 respectively). 2. Notice of Motion (in my name) to next LCC Full Council on 19th March 2014 has been lodged. It will call on Santander to reconsider its withdrawal of all agency banking facilities across the County, with Groby, Kirby Muxloe and Glenfield all in the firing line. I have also had a motion passed at the last full Borough Council meeting asking Santander to reconsider its withdrawal of Groby’s agency branch this was seconded by Councillor Peter Batty and received the council’s full support a

Re-Live The Final Days Of King Richard III With New Audio Tour Of Key Locations In Leicester and Leicestershire A new audio tour has been developed to help visitors re-live the story of King Richard III’s final days in Leicester and Leicestershire. The launch of this new tour follows the discovery of the remains of King Richard III - the last Plantagenet King of England - in Leicester, announced by the University of Leicester, Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society in February 2013. The audio tour tells the story of King Richard III’s life and death in Leicester and Leicestershire through a number of fictional characters. It features key locations throughout the city and county including Bow Bridge, Greyfriars, the former site of the Blue Boar Inn, The Newarke, Ambion Hill, Kirby Muxloe Castle, Bradgate Park, Bosworth Battlefield and Donington le Heath. The tour is free to download onto smartphones and tablet devices via iTunes or by using QR codes on the new King Richard III interpretation panels across the city, at Bosworth, Donington le Heath and Kirby Muxloe Castle, online at www.visitleicester.info, www.storyofleicester.com, www.goleicestershire.com and websites for Bosworth Battlefield, Donington le Heath, Bradgate Park and Kirby Muxloe Castle, as well as from the Visit Leicester centre in Leicester. Business boost event success Over 50 businesses and partner organisations working in Blaby District attended an event to share ideas for boosting the local economy, funding opportunities and apprenticeship incentives. Blaby District Council hosted their second “Blaby District Means Business” event for local companies at the Marriott Hotel, Leicester and has plans to develop and run further business networking and information sharing events. The next event is planned to be held in May. The meeting included a brief speaker programme with topics on growth, priorities for economic development, funding and skills-training programmes, incentives on offer to help employers to recruit an apprentice, and the chance to network. Cllr Tony Greenwood, portfolio holder for Planning, Economic Development and Housing Strategy at Blaby District Council, said: “The Council recognises that local businesses can benefit from the support from ourselves and our partner agencies, and they may not know what help is out there for them. “By holding these events we are hoping that every business who attends leaves knowing that the opportunities are out there to help them achieve growth. The courses will teach you how to deal with an emergency situation such as collapse, choking or an injury for all ages from babies, infants and adults and hopefully save a life. At the end of the course you will receive a certificate. The courses are of three hours duration so you need to be committed to coming along but at the end of the day you will be better equipped to save a life. The courses are free although any donation would be appreciated and are open to any resident aged over 18 and to those who work in the voluntary sector. Places are limited to 10 people per session so, if you are interested, please book in advance to avoid disappointment. As the first aid courses are three hours long we will now be arranging separate dates for Child and Vulnerable Adult and Substance Misuse awareness sessions. Ratby Primary School News.... 60 Minute Makeover

On Wednesday 5th March Key Stage One came over all Lawrence LlewelynBowen when, as part of their ‘Creature Comforts’ topic, the children took part in their own version of ‘60 Minute Makeover’. As the budget wouldn’t stretch to redecorating the actual classrooms, each child was challenged to transform an old shoebox into a room (complete with fixtures and fittings) before the end of the afternoon. Almost 60 parents and grandparents joined us for the afternoon, with some amazing results. The children had a great time and, as you can see, the event also inspired them to do some fantastic writing… My 60 Minute Makeover by hannah rowan (year 2) When I came in from lunch I was extremely excited and when my mummy came I was really, REALLY excited! I could burst out with excitement! I tried to be the boss, but my mummy was telling me what to get and I was even helping her. She said, “This is FUN!” I said that too. My mummy said it was fabulous too, even though I had a little argument with my mummy about the rug. I went really, really embarrassed then (more than my mummy). She was talking to Daisy’s grandma and laughing for every bit of the afternoon! I was proud when we finished. It was amazing. Even though I was embarrassed having my photo taken, I still enjoyed making the room. My mummy loved my dream room and we enjoyed playing with it when we got it home. We both said “IT IS FABULOUS!”

Beautiful Baby Boys Over the February half term Mrs Steiner and Mrs Thomas gave birth to beautiful baby boys. Mrs Steiner gave birth to George on 18th February, weighing 8lbs 3oz. Then two days later on 20th February, Mrs Thomas gave birth to Wilson, weighing 7lbs 7oz. Mrs Steiner, Mrs Thomas and their boys are all doing well and we look forward to seeing them all very soon.

Are there any LEGO heroes out there? LEGO has long been a favourite amongst children and, following the recent release of the LEGO movie, the children at Ratby Primary School have requested that staff start up an extra-curricular LEGO Club. Whilst the staff agrees with the children that LEGO Club would be great fun (as well as helping the children to develop their creative thinking, problem solving and teamwork skills), any parent or grandparent will know just how expensive those little blocks can be! We would, therefore, like to put out an S.O.S. If you have any LEGO that your children or grandchildren have out-grown, we would be very grateful to receive it. Any donations can be left at the school office. Thank you to anyone who is able to help us – all donations (no matter how small) will be very enthusiastically received!

Ready… Steady… READ!

After the huge success of our ‘Get Caught Reading’ competition, this term children in Key Stage Two have been taking part in the national reading competition “Read for My School”. The competition website www.readformyschool.co.uk is hosting a free online library of over 100 books, which the children can read wherever they have internet access. They can, of course, also choose to read books in print – the goal is simply to read as much as possible this term! 100,000 books will be distributed by Pearson in prizes, including prizes for the schools and children who read the most books, and prize draws for any child who reads more than eight books and schools who read more than 250 books. But the good news doesn’t stop there… 100,000 books will also be donated to a Book Aid International programme in Tanzania that distributes books to schools where children currently have very limited access to books. Our children can even get involved by writing letters to the children in Tanzania, which will be delivered along with the books. Just a few weeks into the competition, our children have already read over 430 online books! Indeed, reading morale is sky high as the children are inspired by the stories they are reading and by the fact that they are helping less fortunate children elsewhere. Watch this space to discover our final total when the competition closes.

SCALP CARE

Hi, and welcome to another issue of Health Matters from your Local Pharmacist. I thought it would be appropriate for my student to pick a topic. My student is Fayaz Valera and graduated with a Masters in Pharmacy from Demontfort University. He has chosen to write about scalp care. To many, the hair and scalp are not considered a health concern; however, for the sufferers, it indeed can be quite annoying. The most common of conditions which affect our scalp are; hair loss, dandruff, seborrhoeaic dermatitis, and head lice. Taking care of our scalp and hair can be a simple process and rewarding over a long term period. It is a well-known fact that more than 50% of men over 50 years of age will have male pattern hair loss and 40% of women when they reach menopause will experience female pattern hair loss. A total of 9 million people in the UK suffer from premature hair loss. Surprisingly, hair loss can be treated from the pharmacy. Regaine for Men and for Women has Minoxidil as its active ingredient. This works by stimulating hair growth when applied to the scalp and prevents further hair loss. The extra strength formulation for men has shown to produce 40% more hair regrowth compared to the lower strength. Head lice are a common problem with children and transmitted by head-to-head contact which frequently occurs while playing in the school classroom. The most common symptom is itching of the scalp and it may be possible to see ‘nits’ – empty white egg casings. The Village

Severe dandruff can be caused by a fungal infection, this is called Seborrhoeic dermatitis. This condition can also affect areas near the scalp, such as the neck and ears. Serious cases include red patches of skin, scaly greasy skin and yellow brown crusts. An antifungal shampoo which contains ketoconazole, such as Nizoral, can be used to combat the fungus infection and clear the dandruff. Using a moisturiser around the scalp area will also help with these symptoms. Many scalp and hair care products are pharmacy only, this means they are not available elsewhere. The members of the Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association have started 2014 with a flurry of activities and trips. In January 50 of their members enjoyed a visit to Litchfield for a morning followed by a visit to Marsh Farm for a four course lunch ,before returning to Derby in the late afternoon.

Laura Betts, Fundraiser at LOROS said; “One of my most memorable days at LOROS was at the Annual LOROS Twilight Walk 2013. The team and I had spent months planning and preparing for this day and it was fantastic to see all the participants taking part. The atmosphere on the evening was electric and although the team had worked from 9am through until midnight you couldn’t help but feel energised by all the smiling faces around you. I didn’t make it home until nearly 1am and although I was completely shattered I couldn’t sleep because I was still buzzing!!”.

The Walk and Talk Group’s latest walk started at Trent Lock and proceeded through the Cranfleet Cut and Attenborough Nature Reserve finishing at the Steamboat Inn where they had lunch. The day was made better due to the brilliant sunshine throughout the walk

The theme “999 Emergency” encourages participants to dress up as Doctors, Nurses, Firegirls or Policewomen – merchandise for this event is available on the event’s website. We also look forward to seeing all the ladies creative ideas! The first 50 ladies to sign up will receive a promotional glow-in-the-dark badge with a Sharpie marker.

Prudential Ride London Cycling Event Alex’s Wish charity based in Rothley has been allocated 26 places for this year’s Prudential Ride London on Sunday, 10th August. Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic Games, the event starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the Games, it’s a truly spectacular event for all involved.

The 23rd April, as all good English men and women will know, is St George’s Day, the national day of the English. At this time the Leicester Branch of the Royal Society of St George is holding its annual banquet at Devonshire Place in Leicester, when all good English folk drink a toast to the Queen and to “Englishness”. The banquet will be held on Saturday 19th April and is one of three annual events organised by the branch, the other two being a similar banquet held on or near Trafalgar Day in October and a Carol Service just before Christmas.

Coping with Cancer Fund Raising Event I am a volunteer therapist for Coping with Cancer, which is a Leicestershire Charity offering practical and emotional support for anyone affected by cancer. On March 29th we will be having our 2nd Therapy and gift event at St Marys Church rooms in Anstey, 10am - 3pm. There will be the opportunity to experience 15 minutes of either a massage, reflexology, Reiki or Crystal healing for £5, these were very popular last time, and everyone left feeling very relaxed. We will also have a variety of gift stalls, including home made fudge, bird boxes, baby gifts, handbags and more, and of course plenty of cakes, teas and coffee.
