LFE Film Evenings on Thursday 5 June 2014 will feature “Jadoo” This comedy drama revolves around two brothers, both wonderful chefs, who fall out catastrophically. At the climax of their dispute they rip the family recipe book in half - one brother gets the starters and the other gets the main courses. They set up rival restaurants, across the road from each other, and spend the next twenty years trying to out-do each other. Neither brother will admit it but they both know they are not entirely successful in the 'other half' of the menu. It takes a daughter - a successful corporate lawyer marrying a man from a very different background - to reunite them. She is planning her marriage and is determined that they will both cook the wedding banquet. Running time: 1hr. 30min. Cert: 12A. Venue: the Parish Hall, Kings Drive, LFE. Cost: £5. Doors open at 7.00pm when a complimentary hot drink and biscuits will be available. The film will start promptly at 7.30pm.
Schedules of classes are in Ratby Post Office, Hawgrip Garden Centre Enderby and other businesses in and around Ratby, Anstey, Glenfield, Groby, Market Bosworth, Thornton and Stanton under Bardon.
Footnote: We would like to apologise to those disappointed customers who we could not accommodate in April for our showing of Philomena, which was a complete sell-out. Please note that there will be a summer break for July and August, when no films will be shown.
You may like to relax and enjoy the cricket match, which takes place on the Saturday too: the bar opens at 2pm. Refreshments of tea/ coffee are also available.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Health Matters in yourLOCAL... Foot Health
With summer fast approaching, everyone will be dusting off their summer wardrobe. Out will come the T-shirts, shorts, sandals and flip flops. During summer, feet are generally on show and people will be thinking of improving their appearance now in readiness for the summer. Feet take the weight of the entire body and are often overlooked in a general wellbeing regime. However they should not be forgotten. Many people wait until something goes wrong before seeking advice. With regular maintenance of your feet and taking simple precautions you can have healthy feet all year round.
There are a number of things that can go wrong with your feet and it is wise to see your registered Chiropodist or Podiatrist regularly. However the NHS is cutting down on NHS funded Podiatry services and are driving towards treating ‘at risk’ patient groups only. This means that many will be left to care for their own feet. You can still see your Podiatrist or Chiropodist privately. There are many common foot conditions that can easily be treated from the pharmacy. I have listed a few below: Fungal nail infections: This affects around 3 in every 100 people in the UK. Around half of all nail problems are due to a fungal infection. This infection can be unsightly as the fungi causes the nail to become discoloured, thickened, and sometimes crumbly. There are treatments to combat this deep seated infection. These include nail lacquers, tablets, and a new laser treatment. Antifungal tablets can only be prescribed by your GP and are the most effective. But they Providing Excellence can also have side effects and require a discussion with the GP before taking them. The tablets can take several months to ensure that the infection has completely gone. Stopping the medication too early can mean that the infection comes back.
Some private clinics are able to offer laser treatment for fungal nail infections. Current evidence shows that this is a safe treatment with promising results in the short-term. However, more research is needed into the long-term effects of laser treatment as it is still relatively new.
Nail lacquers are available to buy over the counter, brands include Curanail and Excilor. Nail paints have to be painted onto the infected nail, where it works its way through to the infection. Regular application is required as it can be difficult to reach all of the infection. A toenail can take up to twelve months to be treated effectively, so it is worth starting the treatment now in readiness for the summer. At the Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe, we have Curanail and Excilor at special reduced rates. Athletes Foot: The medical name for athlete’s foot is tinea pedis and it is very common. It is caused by a fungal infection and is spread via skin to skin contact or through contaminated towels or clothing. A group of fungi called dermatophytes are responsible for athlete’s foot. They thrive in damp humid areas such as showers and changing room floors. Symptoms often start in the spaces between the toes (especially the 4th and 5th toes) and include sore, dry, itchy and flaking skin. The rash can also spread onto the bottom or sides of the feet. Athletes Foot can easily be treated through over the counter remedies. Antifungal medication works by killing the fungi that are causing the infection. This type of medicine is available in several different forms including: creams, sprays, liquids, and powders. The type treatment will vary with each individual. Call in of Healthcare in to The Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe to find out which one would best suit you. Verrucas: These are warts that appear on the soles of the feet. They are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus causes an excess amount of keratin, a hard protein,
FREE
to develop in the top skin layer (epidermis). The extra keratin produces the rough, hard texture of a wart/verruca. Warts/verrucas are contagious and can be transmitted by direct or indirect contact through contaminated surfaces. They appear as raised spots, sometime with a black centre, and as they grow larger, they may have a cauliflower-like appearance.
There are a number of treatments available for verrucas. Treatments available to buy include salicylic acid and freeze sprays. Salicylic acid is effective at treating warts as it removes infected skin. However, it can also destroy healthy skin around the verruca, so it is important to only apply the acid to the affected area. You can also protect your skin before applying the treatment. You can use petroleum jelly or a corn plaster to cover the skin around the verruca. Freeze sprays contain dimethyl-ether/ propane. These sprays absorb the heat from the verruca when they evaporate, making the verruca extremely cold. This kills off the infected skin, again it can also kill normal skin, so it is important to only apply to the affected area. The verruca should then fall off after a few days. Rather than waiting for something to go wrong with your feet, it is advisable to follow a daily foot care regime which will help prevent problems from occurring in the first place. If you would like any more information on anything mentioned above or want a friendly chat of how we can help, please call in to the Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe or call us on 0116 2387353, where one of our highly trained pharmacists will be happy to help. Hinckley and Bosworth's Borough Councils Five Year Housing Supply. It has always been our fear that the ruling Lib/Dem administration at HBBC have been less than honest with the truth regarding whether or not the Council does or does not have a 5 year housing supply. Despite the Council Leader Cllr Stuart Bray confirming less than two months ago at Full Council that they do, at this week's Planning Ctte, members were advised that we do not and are at the mercy of developers right across the Borough.
contact us regarding housing repairs. Recently, we have held discussions with housing inspectors from a wide variety of housing associations as well as HBBC. Our concern is that tenants are putting up with either shoddy work or resigned that no work will ever be carried out. This issue came to a head when a tenant of HBBC was hospitalised twice because of a failure to deal with mould. You do not have to put up with this so please contact us if you feel your landlord has a case to answer

Having finally admitted this, the administration at Hinckley have placed us all in such a position that any developer will see a green light and press ahead with unwanted applications with the knowledge that at appeal, we are unlikely to be able to defend any refusal. During the Bloor's appeals, we both were told that the Council were using the Liverpool method to calculate land allocation and that was the correct method.
Planning Application by Cawrey Homes Ltd. for 134 houses in open countryside south of Markfield Rd, Ratby. We have been contacted by many residents who are strongly opposed to this most unwelcome planning application which they believe is only the start of a wider ambition by developers to cover this whole area of land including the Burroughs recreation area with hundreds of extra houses over the next few years and have asked us to compile a list of their objections to share with fellow residents.

•
Sustainability – No spare capacity in local schools in either Ratby or Groby, local infrastructure already stretched to bursting by planning permission for 102 houses al ready granted without the requisite funding for infrastructure improvements having been secured.
The Inspector agreed both times but at a recent judicial review, the judge decided that it was for individual inspectors to decide on this point. During recent appeals on planning decisions in the Borough, the Council has lost thousands of taxpayers money in costs due to the fact that the Council should have been using the Sedgefield method of calculation all along. The difference being that Sedgefield incorporates a 5 year allocation plus a 20% buffer which effectively takes it to 6 years. They have also admitted that we are approximately 700 houses short of where we should be, despite offering another 1000 houses on top of our 9000 allocation until 2026. The Barwell and Earl Shilton SUE's are not online yet as the developers have failed to sign a section 106 agreement claiming viability issues so the chances are that these two towns will get the 4'500 houses in several years time but no infrastructure to go with it. Furthermore, the Core Strategy that the administration were so eager to push through in 2009 despite us telling them that we were not ready is now not worth the paper it was written on as all the policies regarding land allocation for building are out of date. In terms of the Cawrey application on Markfield Rd, we still have a case to fight this but thanks to the administration at HBBC, we are really up against it but we still have the remit to fight on your behalf to protect this village. This application is due to be heard at the Borough Council Planning Committee on Tuesday 27th May 2014. You can make objections right up to the night of the Committee. At a recent public meeting when asked that if this application was granted hypothetically would he guarantee that the rest of the Burroughs would be safe from development in the future. John Cawrey replied they had no plans at this time is this not another confirmation that Cawrey Ltd would not stop here with application. A Ratby resident made what we can only say was a passionate plea from her heart to John Cawrey asking him to dedicate the Burroughs to the Village in memory of his late mother and father or sell the land back to the village both requests seemed to fall on deaf ears. Sound planning reasons are needed to object to this application these may include: •
Development in the open countryside contrary to HBBC Policy NE5
•
Outside the settlement boundary contrary to HBBC Policy RES5
•
Highway safety – does not comply with HBBC Policy T5
•
In conflict with HBBC Core Strategy Policy 21 –Building within the National Forest

Kirby Muxloe Community Defibrillator Project In 2013 the Kirby Muxloe Fun Day committee named their project of the year to raise funds towards a community defibrillator (AED). The chance of surviving a community cardiac arrest is low <7%, average bystander CPR rates are approx. 30% within the UK and it has been demonstrated that by implementing basic life support and having access to community AEDs significantly increase the chance of survival to 52% (Seattle bystander rates are 54% , Norway 73%). Since the start of the fundraising we have successfully raised sufficient funds through grant applications and further fundraising events to be able to purchase 2 defibrillators and lockable vandal proof cabinets for their storage and are on the way to buying a third ! The AEDs will be located at highly visible key points around the village so that there will be 24 hour access. They can be accessed via a code given out by the Ambulance service on receipt of a valid 999 call. The money has been raised by the village coming together in a variety of events e.g. Kirby Muxloe Primary School healthy heart week and non-uniform day, Village fun day event held in September, Coffee morning, and through generous donations. Grants have been awarded through the British Heart Foundation, SADS UK (Sudden Adult Death Trust), Leicestershire County Council Big Society Fund.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group
Free business start up support for budding entrepreneurs
The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm.
Help is at hand for budding entrepreneurs looking to set up their own business thanks to a free scheme sponsored by Blaby District Council and Skills for Enterprise.
Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg On April 5th, we held an exhibition titled "Kirby's Past" in the Village Hall. This included photographs and memorabilia relating to Kirby from the early 20th century through two World Wars to modern days. It proved to be very popular, with over 250 people coming through the doors. Many people remarked on how interesting it was to see how Kirby had developed over the years. We also had on sale our new book: "A Shop For Everything – The Growth of Kirby Muxloe". Copies are available for purchase in the Library and Post Office at a price of £4.50.
The Start Up Now programme includes four workshops taking place at the council offices in Narborough starting on Monday June 2 and each running from 10am until 3pm. The workshops offer practical help on self employment topics such as how to build a business plan, understanding finance and cash planning, marketing and how to find customers. Additionally one to one support from a business adviser will be available to help get enterprises off to a flying start. Carole Troake, principal economic development officer at Blaby District Council said: “The Council recognises that setting up a business can be a very exciting yet challenging time and expert advice can really get you started on the right track towards success.” For details of the programme, dates and to check if you are eligible contact 0116 2558794 or visit www.skillsforenterprise.co.uk
We were also very pleased that several people took up our request for them to bring in their own old photographs and documents for us to copy. It all helps us to preserve Kirby's heritage for future generations. Our next meeting will take place on Thursday 15th May, when Peter Liddle will be presenting ‘Time Team Leicestershire’. The short Annual General Meeting of the Group will also take place. The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe. Some pictures of ‘Old’ Kirby Muxloe are now displayed in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, so if you visit the Hall, you might like to look at them.

Open letter to Mr Cawrey. Subject: Please Save our Burroughs. Dear Mr. Cawrey I am appealing to you on behalf of the many Ratby residents, who feel passionately, as I do, about saving our unique and glorious countryside known as "the Burroughs", from being built upon. It is in your hands as to whether we preserve this beautiful area for the future or destroy it forever. We are asking that you allow us, the Ratby villagers, to buy all of this land back from you, at the value you paid for it, so that we can keep it safe, for not only us to enjoy, but for our children, their children and for posterity. You are a wealthy man already, so you do not need the money. We know this because your accounts were revealed to us at the public meeting on Friday. You have millions in the bank and owe very little to creditors. Not to mention that you have been granted permission to build elsewhere in the village, which will see you and your business through the next few years. So why not sell the land back to us and dedicate it to the memory of your late mother, who we were told, so loved the Burroughs? What better way to be remembered by Ratby, as the man who built so many houses in the village but was able to save the Burroughs for us, the magical place in Ratby, that means so much to us all? Your memory too would live on, if you could find it in your heart to make this gesture. The Burroughs is special to all of us for so many reasons. For some it is the sheer pleasure of being surrounded by the glorious open countryside as far as the eye can see, unimpeded by manmade buildings, where we and our families can enjoy walking, cycling, and the feeling that we have been transported to a different world far away from our every day lives and to a better place, untarnished by time, even if just for a short while. For others, particularly the elderly, its magic is felt simply by looking at the magnificent countryside. One such gentleman told me it is 'the reason that he gets out of bed in the morning, to look out of his window and to survey nature at its finest and in all its glory.' For one young girl, who rode her pony from Kirby Muxloe to Ratby, many years ago now, simply out of curiousity as to where Stamford
Street led to, it was the sheer joy and physical shock at seeing this unexpected, glorious view of the Ratby Burroughs in front of her. The memory is as vivid today as it was then. And the view remains unchanged. For the window cleaners who park their van at the top of Stamford Street, and have done so for many years now, who say there is no finer view in the whole of Leicestershire and that they envy the Ratby villagers, all of whom live so close to this magical area. For the elderly chap, who had suffered a stroke and lost the power of speech, but who still managed to hobble up here, to the top of Stamford Street, and gaze for a while, whilst resting on his walking stick, at the unparalleled view of the Ratby Burroughs, spread before him. One lady, who spoke so passionately and eloquently at Friday's meeting, described 'The Burroughs' as the 'Bradgate Park of Ratby.' And she is right. Quite simply, the Burroughs is a magical, breathtaking area of magnificent, so far unspoilt countryside. It is good for us all, young and old alike, physically as well as spiritually. It is inspirational. It uplifts the soul. It is everything that is good about Ratby. Some might even say that it is the only good thing left in Ratby. Take the Burroughs away from us, Mr. Cawrey, build upon it and you will not only destroy the magic that is here, but you will take away the heart and soul from our village. There are other sites in Ratby that can still be built upon, that you can build upon. But not here. Please not here. Please seriously consider the suggestion we are making to you. We will buy back the Burroughs from you, if you allow us to do so.In return we will continue to use it and cherish it as we do today but for always, and we will dedicate it not only to your late mother's memory, but to you too, Mr Cawrey, as the man who did the right thing for Ratby. Yours sincerely, A Ratby Resident (on behalf of Ratby village) Name and Address Supplied.

Ratby Primary School News.... Egg-cellent Easter Bonnets! As part of our ongoing programme of ‘Family Time’ events, the families of children in Key Stage 1 were invited into school on the last week before the Easter break to join us in an afternoon of bonnet making. Once again, we had tremendous support from parents, carers and grandparents and the children had a fantastic afternoon. The staff were overwhelmed by just how creative and artistic the children (and their families!) were, and the array of bonnets and hats was simply fantastic! After lots of fun working together to make the bonnets, the afternoon came to a climax with a traditional Easter bonnet parade in the hall and a chance to celebrate all of the children’s achievements. We would like to thank everyone who supported us in this event, and look forward to seeing you next time.
Adorable Dora’s Eggs Easter is always one of the most eagerly awaited times of year in school, not just for the hot cross buns and chocolate eggs, but because it is when our Foundation Stage children put on their annual production.
Condover Hall Report by Katie Evans (Y6)
On Monday a coach came to pick us up to take us to Condover Hall. It took us two boring hours to get there! On the way there every single person was hyper, but as the journey proceeded they got tired. When we finally got there everyone was excited. Time flew by and soon it was Wednesday. For our morning routine we got up at 7:15am and had 45 minutes to get ready and sorted to be on time for our breakfast slot. For breakfast I had a chocolate croissant with cool orange juice. I sat with my friends: Kacey, Lucie, Chloe, Rhianna, Holly, Olivia, Maddie, Sharia and Grace. Some of the girls from the other school were looking at us, so George asked one of those girls to go out with one of the other boys from our school! Our first activity was ‘Jacob’s Ladder’. It’s called ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ because a man called Jacob completed the ladder in 15 seconds! First to have a go were Olivia and Maddie, they were great but struggled. Next it was my turn and I got to the top! After that I couldn’t wait for the rest of the activities!!
This year the children, under the expert direction of Mrs Anstey and Mrs Savage, put on a fabulous performance of ‘Dora’s Eggs’. Though they have been in school for less than a year, the little stars did brilliantly and had the audience enchanted by their singing and dancing and their beautifully clear speaking. Every child had an important role to play and every single one made us proud. Well done Sunshine and Rainbow classes!

School Holiday Pattern Set to Stay County schools are set to keep the traditional Leicestershire pattern for terms and holidays, following a consultation. Over 3,000 parents, schools, governing bodies and other groups sent their feedback to Leicestershire County Council after being invited to have a say on different options. A total of 86 per cent of people said they wanted to keep the status quo. The council's cabinet is expected to agree the term dates for the next four academic years at a meeting on Tuesday, 6th May. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I'm pleased that so many parents and schools have taken the time to send us their feedback. "We weren't anticipating a huge appetite for change but as the education landscape has changed a lot recently, we wanted to make sure that the term dates are still right for our children and families. "The overwhelming response is that people want to follow the existing pattern." The cabinet meeting will be webcast and can be found at: www.leics.gov.uk/webcast
FILMREVIEW Bad Neighbours- 15 After the birth of their new baby, moving house seems like a perfectly logical idea for Kelly and Max Radner (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne). Little do they know that their lives will be made a misery by Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) and co. their new neighbours, who turn out to be members of a frat house on the opposite side of the road.

Nearly 1000 girls were policing Leicester. Saturday night, 26th April, saw sisters, mothers, daughters, friends, partners and colleagues unite across the county. They took over not only the King Power Stadium but also the streets of Leicester during the LOROS Hospice Twilight Walk - an annual 10km Sponsored Walk for ladies only. The circuit was a circular loop which included some of Leicester City hot spots. Walkers enjoyed the mysterious New Walk, illuminated by lanterns, nooks and crannies in the oldest part of the city as well as the pink and violet lights of the modern Curve Theatre building and much more! The walk started from and finished at the King Power Stadium, where the host for the evening was DJ Amy Voce from the GEM106 Breakfast Team. As part of the celebrations, walkers had the opportunity to play games to win food vouchers to the new bar and grill, The Spur, but also to remember their loved ones by releasing a pink helium-filled balloon with their messages attached. The sky changed colour to pink for a while, making the beginning of the evening very special and emotional. One of the participants of this year’s LOROS Twilight Walk said: “The balloon release touched me deeply and made me cry as I miss my Nanny who died at LOROS. Being together with such fantastic ladies during this amazing event gave me hope and happiness! I look forward to taking part in the event next year!” The theme for 2015's Twilight Walk will be Saints and Sinners. This year’s theme “999 Emergency” called for Doctors, Nurses, Firegirls, Policewomen and many more emergency service themed outfits. LOROS Fundraising Team were impressed by the ladies’ creative ideas! The pictures are available on the charity official webpage www.loros.co.uk Christian Weikert-Picker, the event organiser said: “The LOROS Fundraising Team would like to say a big thank you to all the ladies who took part in our Twilight Walk. The atmosphere was magical and as always the event is one of our best supported fundraising events, we hope that the many 'Selfie' images taken on the night continues to spread the awareness of the work at the Hospice. We hope to raise over £40,000 from the event, which helps us to provide the vital help to our terminally ill patients and their families. We wouldn’t be able to organise this event without our great volunteers. Many thanks to them for their vital help!” For more details regarding this year’s Twilight Walk please visit www.loros.co.uk or call the LOROS Fundraising Team on 0116 231 8431/2.

Carer Support Services Review Consultation. Have your say on proposed changes to support for carers. During 2013, Leicestershire County Council announced that it was facing its biggest ever financial challenge. Last year, we consulted widely about how we should respond to this challenge. Based on the feedback to this consultation, we are aiming to prioritise, as far as possible, services for vulnerable people. We recognise the huge contribution that carers make to supporting people with social care needs. As such there will be an increase in the health and social care investment in carer support services. The forthcoming Care Bill 2013-14 from Central Government will include a number of additional statutory duties that local authorities must provide for carers. These duties need to be in place by April 2015 when the act is due to become law. Leicestershire has an ageing population and the number of carers in the county is set to rise over the next few years. We need to ensure that the support we provide to carers is sustainable, easily accessible and it goes to those who need it most. We are proposing to offer a new way of supporting carers in Leicestershire, which we would like your views. The consultation form is available through the link below: www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/carersupport For general enquires please call 0116 305 0965 Speeding Markfield Road. Cawrey Home’s application for 134 more houses off Markfield Road will not help the current traffic situation if it gets passed. I have been working with the police over the speeding issue and especially their Road Safety Partnership Camera Safety Team and I have been promised they will monitor Markfield Road over the next 12 months. They have reported to me that they caught 34 drivers in just over an hour and a half during their first stint at the beginning of April. Bus Stop at the top of Danehill. I am pleased to report that the County Council has now completed the hard standing at the bus stop at the top of Danehill. I had requested this after I had been contacted by residents.
Parking Issues Outside Ratby Primary School Firstly I have been contacted by residents who are concerned with the way parents are parking their cars outside the school on the Burroughs Road on double yellow lines both in the mornings and afternoons when school finishes. This is causing an unnecessary hazard to children walking to school. I would ask parents to please leave enough time to be able to find a safe place to park when taking your children to school. The Police and Civil parking wardens will be monitoring the situation. Libraries Consultation The County is now consulting with the public on its proposed changes to the Libraries. The Consultation Starts 7th April – Ends 7th July. Survey (online – but paper copies available) Consultation meetings at or near each community library Community Partnership Library workshops I would urge all residents to take part in this consultation you can take part on line at the following address; www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/futurelibraries If you do not have a computer you can use the ones in the Library free. General queries about consultation Tele 0116 305 7034 futurelibraries@leics.gov.uk Information will be on display at each Library and how to take part. Ratby’s Public Meeting is on Monday 16th June at 7pm at the Ratby Church Rooms Church Lane doors open at 6.30pm. The County Council have also arranged 3 Community Partnerships Library Workshops planned, where you can get more information and advice on running a local library. All workshops start at 6.15pm and finish at 8.30pm. (Doors open at 6pm) Monday 19th May - County Hall Monday 16th June - Shepshed High School To help the Council plan for these workshops I would ask residents to, please register in advance at futurelibraries@leics.gov.uk or by calling 0116 305 7034. I would urge residents to use the library we want to show its well used. Please use it we do not want to lose it. I will also be lobbying to keep both Ratby and Groby Libraries open through the scrutiny process as your local County Councillor. I am passionate about
libraries and I personally believe that the Library service is such an important part of our community as it serves some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Closure Station Road, Ratby I wish to bring to residents attention Station Road Ratby will be closed from its junction with Taverner Drive to the spot island junction with Desford Road, Kirby Muxloe. From the 24th May to the 7th June 2014 to allow Severn Trent to put a new water main in. So those residents that travel through Ratby in order to access Kirby Muxloe or LFE will need to follow the diversion route whilst this work is taking place. The diversion route will be via Station Road, Desford Lane, Ratby, left onto Desford Lane Kirby Muxloe continue onto Desford Road, Ratby Lane, Kirby Muxloe and vice versa. This work is planned for 3 weeks and I wanted to make sure residents are fully aware and to leave extra time for their journeys. Email Scam I have just been made aware of a phishing scam currently being circulated by email. It purports to be from BT (British Telecom). It looks like the following (Do not click on the 'Click Here'): Subject: Important Message Alert ! Dear Customer, This e-mail has been sent to you by BT to inform you that we were unable to process your last payment of bill. This might be due to either of the following reasons: 1. New detailed map of Charnwood Forest Getting out and exploring Charnwood Forest is about to get a whole lot easier with a new detailed map covering the whole of the area on a single sheet. The colourful 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey based map, designed by award-winning Northamptonshire-based map publisher Global Mapping, shows additional footpaths, bridleways and permissive paths. It also shows public access land and includes information on places to visit etc. It only costs £4.99 and is available to buy locally and online. Publication has been made possible by funding from Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and the Ramblers Association. Roy Denney, Chairman of the Ramblers, Leicestershire & Rutland Area is also Chairman of the Leicestershire Local Access Forum. In that role he instigated the map and says, ‘As so often seems to be the case wherever you are, if you want to explore Charnwood Forest you find yourself walking off the edge of the OS map. Parts of the Forest are already well-loved by many Leicestershire people, but we hope that this locally centred map will encourage them to explore some of its lesser known corners and bring people in from further afield, boosting the local economy’ The map is currently available from Bradgate Park, with other outlets to follow shortly, or online from www.mapstop.co.uk

WANt tO bECOME A MAStER COMPOStER? The county council is looking to recruit more local residents to be trained as master composters. It’s a win-win situation for all involved – the master composters can develop their interest in gardening while helping to reduce the amount of organic waste which goes to landfill. Master composters can join a wellestablished group and use their own skills and enthusiasm to choose how they would like to raise awareness of the benefits of home composting and encourage more people to home compost. New recruits will be invited to a training weekend at Garden Organic’s base in Ryton near Coventry next month and then be able to donate a minimum of 30 hours of their time over the next 12 months. Pam Posnett, the county council’s Cabinet member for communities, said: “Whatever the master composters choose to do, they’ll have the support of a volunteer co-ordinator as well as a lot of resources to help them too. “There will also be the chance to attend events and roadshows, give talks and presentations, write blogs, set up websites and even start composting clubs – there are so many opportunities to be involved.” Jane Redfearn, of Fleckney, is a current master composter as well as an enthusiastic allotment-holder. She said: “I have learned such a lot through the scheme – and not just about composting but also recycling, reusing and food waste. I’m really glad I became a master composter and would encourage anyone with an interest to sign up.” If you are a Leicestershire resident, aged 18 or over, and would like to find out more, visit: http://www.lesswaste.org.uk/master_composter or call 0116 305 7005.

The Hospital Liaison Dementia Support Service, which launched on Tuesday, April 22, will see three members of staff from the charity working from the hospital in a bid to improve patient experience, reduce time spent in hospital and re-admissions as well as provide valuable information, advice and guidance. The service is centred around the completion of a specialist document developed by Alzheimer’s Society called This is Me, which details things that are important to the person with dementia like food preferences, interests and hobbies. Any person then involved in their care will have easy access to the things most pertinent to their happiness and wellbeing. Jo Rodwell, Alzheimer’s Society dementia support manager in Leicestershire and Rutland said: ““Hospital can be a daunting experience for someone with dementia, who may be experiencing confusion or have trouble communicating. This service is an exciting opportunity to build on the good work that is already going on at the hospital to ensure that people with the condition get the best possible care. We’ll be working closely with staff and patients and we hope that by providing support and information, people will stay in hospital for shorter periods, improving their quality of life and also saving money for the hospital.” Anybody can refer into the service and self-referrals are also accepted. For more information contact Jo Rodwell (Dementia Support Manager) or Sally Grundy (Services Manager) on 0116 231 1111 or e-mail leicestershireandrutland@alzheimers.org.uk.

The paint, also known as Festival Powder and Race Paint is the safest, fully tested throwing powder on the market. Made from natural corn starch and colour dyes that are food and cosmetic grade tested to the highest FDA standard, it is biodegradable, environmentally friendly and easy to clean up! Glenfield U3A – News Update... The first quarter of the year has been a busy time for the Glenfield U3A. The new year started with another excellent, two course, traditional roast, New Year luncheon produced for 80 of our members by Carol & Peter Knill and our own catering team. At the February AGM key members of the Committee had to stand down from their roles after the end of their three year tenure. Gail Nunn, formerly the Groups’ co-ordinator became the new chairperson, taking over from Carol Knill. Carol has taken on a role with the regional network, using her expertise to help set up other U3As in the area. Carol is also coordinating ‘Outings’ for the Glenfield members with trips booked to see the TV programme Pointless in May and to the Street Life museum in Hull in June. At the end of March the U3A held their second craft fair at St Peter’s Church centre. There were over 25 stalls selling a variety of handcrafted items and our own gardening group sold plants to help fund a speaker in November. LOROS raised funds at the event by selling scratch cards and second hand books. This year, profits from the fair were shared with the charities Macmillans and Prostaid. In April, Angela Barbour, the new membership secretary, organised a skittles evening for members at the WMC in Newbold Verdon. The event proved so popular that it is likely to be repeated soon. There will be further social events organised throughout the year and details can be found on the ‘Events’ page of the website. Membership had grown to 209 by April this year. Interestingly over half of our members are from surrounding villages, with members from as far afield as Mountsorrel, Birstall and Syston. Because of the increasing numbers, some groups have had to close to new members but where that has happened a second group has been formed e.g. walking 1 & 2,
Reading 1 & 2, and a second history group is in the offing.
always receptive to new ideas and groups. Do you have any expertise that you could share with others?? Do you have a special interest?? If so we would love to hear from you.
A number of new groups have started up this year; Discussion (topics of the day), Walk & Talk (local history talk with a 2 hour walk), Bird Watching & Natural History and hopefully coming soon will be a Badminton Group, German Conversation, Art Appreciation and Kurling.
If you are interested in any of our activities and have entered your ‘third age’ (are retired or semi-retired) then why not join? Membership is only £1 per month + an annual fee to head office for insurance of £3.50.
The Pilates group has gone from strength to the strength and consideration is being given to meeting weekly instead of fortnightly. Last year committee member Peter Knill secured a grant for the Tai Chi group and this year he has secured a grant for the Pilates group. This means we can keep costs to the members to a minimum.
Monthly meetings are held at 2pm on the fourth Thursday of the month at St Peter’s Church Centre, Glenfield. There is usually a round up of U3A news followed by a guest speaker, refreshments and a chance for a natter with friends old and new. Committee members are always on hand to meet and greet visitors at these meetings.
Other established groups include; history, gardening, craft, card making, strollers, flower arranging, indoor bowls, photography, table tennis, writing, film club, cycling and computing. Our ‘resident’ computer expert Pat Sinclair tutors 6 weekly computer courses for beginners on a Monday afternoon at the Glenfield Library. These lessons have proved very popular with our members. Our U3A has a number of laptop computers available for use by members if they do not have their own.
Please take a look at our website www.u3asites.org.uk/glenfield it is full of information, newsletters, committee meeting minutes, useful links. Membership forms are available on line. Email glenfieldu3a@aol.com or telephone Gail Nunn – 0116 2314895 for information. Gill Tapping Publicity Officer, Website & Newsletter Editor.
At 11am on Wednesday 28th May there will be a Glenfield U3A ‘Roadshow’ at the Memorial Hall, Stamford St, Glenfield, for our new members. Visitors are welcome to call in for a cuppa and a chat with group leaders and committee members to see what we have to offer. We are

SUPPORT THE LOROS SPRING RAFFLE IN MEMORY OF PHIL What would you choose if you had to decide between winning £10,000 cash or a luxury cruise? This is exactly the decision that the winner of the LOROS Spring 2014 raffle will have to make following the draw on Wednesday 11th June. Imagine leaving your worries behind and sailing away on a luxury cruise or having £10,000 available to spend on anything you like. Joining in the LOROS Spring 2014 raffle is also a great way to help raise funds for vital care services and every £1 ticket sold makes a difference. LOROS offers caring expertise to patients and families who may be spending their last days, even hours, together. Your kindness would enable us to continue providing the best quality of life during these precious times. Phil Read and his family are a typical example of the care provided by LOROS and Phil’s family are very keen to tell of their experience at LOROS to support the raffle in memory of Phil. Following a conversation with Phil’s nurse, when his pain became too much to bear, that a bed was made available and his family drove him to LOROS. The volunteers on reception greeted him warmly and immediately took him to the ward. Having never visited before, Phil’s family describe their first impressions of LOROS as homely, welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately Phil’s condition deteriorated quickly but he spent 10 happy days at LOROS until he died in October 2013.
