Ratby Primary School Get Caught Reading Over the October half term the children of Ratby Primary School were set a challenge to ‘Get Caught Reading!’ The challenge was to read a book in an unusual place, the crazier the better. Having received over one hundred entries, the children did not disappoint with their ideas. Even the staff became very competitive from photographs at the farm to reading next to the Empire State Building! The class with the most entries were Mrs Whittaker and Mrs Young’s Class and they will be presented with a special whole class prize this week. When it came to judging the competition Miss Aitken found it difficult as each and every entry was a winner in its own right.

Stepping Stones Spend that £1 Closer To Home Project The Leicestershire County Council’s Stepping Stones project is looking to recruit more Tree Wardens to parishes across the county. Tree Wardens are appointed by local parish councils to coordinate local tree based environmental projects. Tree Wardens are particularly needed in parishes in North West Leicestershire, Charnwood, Melton and Harborough. Volunteering as a Tree Warden is a great opportunity for people to make their community a leafier place by looking after local trees. The scheme is open to all adults and there is no minimum skill level or time commitment required. Tree Wardens carry out a range of activities, from setting up tree nurseries and growing trees, to surveying and recording trees of local interest and organising awareness events for schools and communities. The role is ideal for people who are passionate about trees and want to learn more and develop new skills. More information about the Tree Warden scheme can be found on the website www.leics.gov.uk/tree_wardens. To find out how to sign up as a volunteer please contact steppingstones@leics.gov.uk / 0116 305 7221. For more information on volunteering visit www.leics.gov.uk/volunteers_opps.

A local hospice says it hopes that National Lottery players will support causes closer to home in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland as the National Lottery doubles the price of a ticket from £1 to £2 with effect from Thursday 3rd October. LOROS is encouraging those who do not feel they can continue playing the National Lottery due to the rise, to turn their attentions to their local charity.

Open Box Promotions 42 Forest Rise, Kirby Muxloe Leicester, LE9 2HQ

LOROS has been running a lottery since October 1996 and currently has over 21,000 members, currently raising around £800,000 per year towards hospice care. Lottery Manager Liz Singleton says “the LOROS Lottery plays a very real part in providing funding needed to continue the wonderful work carried out at the hospice and in the community but we need more people to come forward and join in the fun”.

The LOROS lottery still only costs £1 per week to enter, and has no plans to match its fee with that of the National Lottery.

The other benefit to supporting the LOROS Lottery is that supporters can see where and how their contribution is making a difference to local lives, and, indeed people who they may know.

Your Local is a monthly compilation of articles, press releases, events, general items of interest and news items submitted to us by local residents, groups, associations, sports clubs and local authorities.

Liz added “Around 2,500 local people receive free, high-quality, compassionate care and support each year and our weekly lottery raises the equivalent to the cost of 22 full time nurses on our ward”.

BRADGATE LIONS CLUB NEWS... We are now into our second month of our new ‘Lionistic’ year, and because of holidays and other commitments we do seem to have made a slow start with our community and fund raising efforts, but having said that, we have attended various village and school fetes and taken a group of 21 special needs pupils from South Gate School to Ashby Statutes, during the last few weeks. We are now ready to hit the ground running with the first of our planned fund raising events, our ‘Children in Need’ bucket collections in November, and then it’s the ‘Christmas Prize Draw Baskets’ in pubs throughout the area and our Santa Float in Villages in our district. All this will see us through to the New Year and a well earned rest, but we are already planning a ‘Race Evening’ for February 22nd. Again at Botcheston, and possibly an evening of nostalgia, with music from the 50s.60s. And 70s. At a venue yet to be decided. More news of this to follow later! Bradgate Lions are involved in all sorts of other activities such as the collecting and recycling of your old Glasses. Mobile ‘phones, Stamps, and Greeting cards. If you have any of these items available, just give Roger a ring and he will arrange to collect them. One of our main initiatives is supplying ‘Message in a Bottle’ and ‘Message in a Wallet’ to any person or organisation requiring them. These are simple tools, either to be kept at home in your refrigerator, or to be kept on your person in your purse or wallet. The Lions Message in a bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal details in a common place, such as your ‘fridge, where they can be easily found in an emergency. Likewise the Message in a wallet is a similar device designed to help the emergency services in the event of an accident or emergency. It is a credit size card kept in a in a plastic case, in your wallet or purse. Both of these items are FREE. Some Doctors Surgeries, Health Centres and Chemists will have supplies, but they can be easily obtained from your local Lions Club members. If you would like any further information about any of the above items. Or about Bradgate Lions Club, please ring Roger on 01530 242912 who would be pleased to help. Roger Gamble - Lion

Kirby Muxloe LOCAL GIRL GUIDE NEEDS YOUR residents Action Group HELP! We need you! Leicestershire Guides are promoting International Friendship with a 10 day trip to Vassaro in Sweden.

Come along and join us for an update and to plan our next steps in the campaign to oppose the proposed development on the fields to the rear of Barry Close and the railway line, following the public exhibition by Taylor Wimpey in September. Where? Scout Headquarters, Main Street Kirby Muxloe When? Thursday, 21 November at 7.00pm A big thank you to all those who have expressed their support so far. By accommodating yet more development in the village on one of the last green spaces well used by the community, we believe this would: • Significantly add to the existing levels of traffic through the village and which will ultimately impact elsewhere Increase in pollution levels from additional traffic (already above EU and UK recommended levels in LFE.) • Impact on the school and local GP surgery already experiencing problems at full capacity • Further reduce the area of green space used by all ages within the community. • Have a detrimental effect on the wet willow woodland and environs which contain protected species • Exacerbate further wildlife habitat loss which is a huge problem nationally We believe that such spaces are crucial to the wellbeing of the community, especially now that many green wedges between settlements are disappearing under concrete. We want to see preservation of the site, for future generations to enjoy the tranquillity and nature of the area as we have done. Future generations and wildlife do not have a voice, but YOU DO! Health Matters in yourLOCAL... Diabetes Diabetes is a common lifelong health condition. There are 2.9 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 850,000 people with the condition that don’t know about it. Symptoms occur because Glucose stays in the blood and is not being used up as energy. The main symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes can include • Passing urine more often than usual • Increased thirst • Extreme tiredness • Unexplained weight loss • Genital itching or regular episodes of thrush • Slow healing of cuts and wounds • Blurred vision Diabetes is normally diagnosed through a fasting blood glucose test, usually done at the doctor’s surgery, where a specially trained Diabetic Nurse, will confirm the diagnosis. There are 2 main types of diabetes Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin. Insulin unlocks the door to the body’s cells so that glucose can enter the cells where it is used as a fuel. In Type 1 diabetes the body is unable to produce any insulin so there is no opening of the body’s cell doors and the glucose builds up in the blood rather then entering the cells. This can cause symptoms such as fatigue as the body’s cell have no fuel (glucose) to function. Type 1 diabetes accounts for between 5 and 15 per cent of all people with diabetes and is treated by daily insulin injections, a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Insulin comes in several different forms, each of which works slightly differently. For example, some last up to a whole day (long-acting), some last up to eight hours (short-acting) and some work quickly but do not last very long (rapidacting). Some people with type 1 diabetes may benefit from a fairly new procedure known as islet transplantation. It involves implanting healthy islet cells from the pancreas of a

deceased donor into the pancreas of someone with type 1 diabetes. Islet transplants have been shown to be an effective way of reducing the risk of severe hypoglycaemic attacks or ‘hypos’ (where a person’s blood sugar falls to an abnormally low level). So far, the results of islet transplants carried out in the UK have shown a significant reduction in the number of hypos, from 23 per person per year before transplantation to less than one per person per year afterwards. Left untreated, diabetes can cause many different health problems. Large amounts of glucose can damage blood vessels, nerves and organs. Even a mildly raised glucose level that does not cause any symptoms can have damaging effects in the long term. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). Therefore there is some glucose going into the body’s cells but there is still residual glucose left in the blood. Type 2 diabetes accounts for between 85 and 95 per cent of all people with diabetes and is treated with a healthy diet and increased physical activity. In addition to this, medication and/or insulin is often required. Between 2003 and 2009, there have been many issues arising from patients receiving insulin. 26 per cent registered wrong dose, strength or frequency and 14 per cent described patients being prescribed or receiving (or both) the wrong product. The look-alike and sound-alike names of insulin products (e.g., Novorapid and Novomix) and subtle differences (e.g., Humulin S, I and M3) is a cause of confusion in prescribing and dispensing. To tackle the problem, the National Patient Safety Agency issued an alert. This highlighted the frequency and risks of errors and

recommended that adults on insulin therapy receive a patient information booklet and an “insulin passport” to help provide accurate identification of their current insulin products and transfer essential information across healthcare sectors. The insulin passport is a single, double-sided sheet that folds to credit-card size. It records all the essential information required. If you have not already obtained an insulin passport it would be wise to obtain one. This can be obtained from your doctor’s surgery, or alternatively it can be obtained from The Village Pharmacy with an insulin prescription dispensed. Recently, there has been a manufacturer’s recall on certain batches of Novomix insulin as the amount of insulin in the vials may vary due to a fault in the manufacturing process. At the Village pharmacy we have checked our batches in stock and ones dispensed and we can assure our patients that their insulin is safe to use. If you have received your insulin from another pharmacy please check the batch number and call us on 0116 2387353 and we can advise you on what to do next. Emma Pye – UK-German Youth Kirby Ostomy Ambassador Support Group This September Emma Pye (Year 13) from Groby Community College applied to the UK-German Connection to become a UK-German Youth Ambassador. After writing a detailed and well-crafted application, she sent it off to London. Despite a very high volume of exceptional applications, we found out that she had beaten off the competition to secure one of ten places on the fully funded scheme. What an amazing achievement! Emma will now participate in a conference in London in October 2013 as well as a trip and conference in Berlin in July 2014. She will be working with other likeminded students from around the country as well as developing networks and partnerships with students from Germany. The main aim of the Ambassador role is to increase awareness of the benefits of studying the German language and Emma’s passion for languages will certainly help her with this. We wish her luck with her endeavours and look forward to hearing about them throughout the year!

WE ARE a support group in Leicestershire for anyone with an Ileostomy, colostomy or Urostomy. Our aim is for members to come along for coffee, tea etc and chat to others who understand the benefits and problems of living with a stoma. This can be an ostomate, their partners, friends or someone who is thinking of having the operation.

“I was so excited to find out that my application to be a UK-German Youth Ambassador had been accepted! I have always had a passion for languages and so this is a great opportunity for me to make a difference and encourage people to be more interested in both German language and culture. I have lots of ideas and I am currently in the process of trying to set up some links with Primary schools in the local area in order to organise some activity days based on celebrations in Germany. In terms of including students at the college both pre- and post-16, I am hoping to set up links with a school in Germany with students contacting each other individually via emails or as a group by Skype in order to really encourage them to learn and practice some German! I am really looking forward to making the most of this opportunity and cannot wait to organise various other activities and events in the year ahead!”

We usually meet on the third Saturday of the month, 10.30 am to 12.30pm usually at Glenfield Hospital where we have free parking. We normally have a speaker for the first hour on a variety of subjects followed by tea, coffee etc and catch up with the member’s news. If you feel you would like to join us or would like more information then please ring Janet on 01162392844 or email: kosg2013@btinternet.com

Only the ground floor of the house is available for the public to see, but it is fascinating to see where the queen watches TV and has her dinner. There were many very helpful members of staff in each of the rooms who are very knowledgeable. It is obvious that they love working there and they know some lovely tales about the royal family. There is also the lovely church to see and extensive grounds to walk round. Everyone had a lovely time and all said it was one of the most memorable outings of the year. Thanks go to Maggie for organizing the very well planned trip and thanks also to Woods Coaches for the excellent service. In September there was a Group Meeting at Newbold Working Men’s Club, it wasn’t as well attended as hoped but those who attended got a real a treat. The speaker was Judy Theobald, journalist, author, editor and radio presenter who entitled her talk “Life and Other Problems”. She took us on a roller coaster ride of her life, from two failed marriages, a desire to write poems, becoming a reporter for the “Lincolnshire Echo”, after dinner speaker and is presently presenting the morning show on BBC Radio Lincolnshire. Judy talked openly about the ups and downs of her live with a great deal of wit and humour and she certainly had us all laughing along with her. For our October meeting we were expecting a representative from the National Trust but unfortunately he was unable to attend so our thanks go to June Davis who stepped in at the last minute and spoke of her experience of going onto the “Weakest Link” programme. She gave us a blow by blow account of her journey from applying re: an advert in the local paper to being runner up on the show. June said she felt very fortunate that the only nasty words Anne Robinson said to her when she got a question right were “are you a good guesser” and felt grateful that she didn’t have to do the “walk of shame”. June was a very funny and entertaining speaker and was given a well deserved round of applause. The expected talk on “Finger Printing” Science Lecture at Demontfort University was delayed and instead we were treated to a talk on “Means of Cure” chemical structures, which some of us needed to get our little grey cells working overtime to get to grips with but when it was question time it all became much clearer and we look forward to hearing the “Fingerprinting “next year. As always the Demonfort staff was very welcoming and a good night was enjoyed by all. In November we will be holding our AGM and electing the committee, there are spaces for new members and we look forward to welcoming anyone who would like to join us and bring new ideas to the group. We will be finishing the meeting with a very competitive game of “Uno”, watch for the those “UNO Girls” they will be the ones to beat.

We are a non sectarian group and meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall and as always we welcome visitors but unfortunately we do have a long waiting list for new members. If you are thinking about joining perhaps you would consider joining one of the many other groups in the area such as Ratby, Enderby or Newbold to name but a few, I’m sure you will not be disappointed.

The members of Kirby Muxloe W.I. had the most wonderful visit to “Sandringham” in June. It is a country house set in 20,000 acres of land near the village of Sandringham in Norfolk, England, there is therefore a great deal to see and do and it was felt that a day was not long enough.

Don’t forget to buy your “Birthday Party” tickets from Susan West, it is £10 and it is being held at the Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club on Friday 23rd November. It’s always a brilliant night with good food and entertainment and of course good company.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Speeding Markfield Road Ratby. I asked the police mobile camera team a couple of months ago to monitor the speed along Markfield Road as we all know that vehicles are taking little or no notice of the flashing speed signs. The results passed to me the other week confirmed resident’s fears. The speed of vehicles travelling along Markfield Road was monitored between 18th and 25th September during this time 56.1% of vehicles were found to be exceeding the association of chief police officers acceptable threshold of 10%+ 2mph. This represents a poor compliance with the 30mph speed limit. The police will now be visiting Markfield Road area with their mobile speed cameras. So motorists please take note Markfield Road has a 30mph speed limit so please keep to it or face the Points! Trading Standards Alert. I was contacted with regard to workmen approaching vulnerable elderly people in Groby stating they were part of the construction team working on the A46/A50 Island working for the County Council. They were offering to Tarmac these vulnerable peoples driveways. Realising that this was a scam I immediatly contacted officers at County Hall; I established that I was correct and arranged for trading Standards officers to attend the area. I am pleased to say positive intelligence was gained and due to the quick and efficient actions of the Trading Stands Team evidence was obtained and the persons involved identified. This is now a current ongoing and active investigation. Trading Standards have put the following Alert out. Leicestershire County Council's Trading Standards Service has received reports of cold-callers in the Groby area offering to carry out driveway work. This trader states that they are working for Leicestershire County Council, which is not true. Trading Standards always advises residents to be aware of rogue traders as some take advantage of road work being carried out in the area such as the A50/A46 road island improvements, by going from door to door offering to re-surface drives with “left over” material. Neither Leicestershire County

Council nor its contractors would operate in this way. Trading Standards advise all residents not to open their doors to strangers or buy goods or services on their doorsteps. If you receive any reports of similar trading activity, please contact Trading Standards on 08454 04 05 06 or use telltradingstandards@leics.gov.uk Ivanhoe Trail, Ratby. Those of you have walked the Ivanhoe trail between the Railway public house and Taverner Drive recently will no doubt be surprised at the transformation. The area has been cleared of overgrown brambles and weeds this is something that I requested the County Council to do back in August. I think you will agree the clearance has made such a difference. I have thanked the officers for their positive action to my request. There is now no excuse for dog walkers not to use the dog bin situated next to the Railway public house. The grass has been cut back to make easy access to the bin.

Ivanhoe Trail Ratby to Glenfield Update. I wish to inform residents of the proposed route improvements to Bridleway R115/National Cycle Network Route 63 (locally known as the Ivanhoe Trail/Comet Way), between Glenfield and Ratby, to fulfil planning conditions attached to the Glenfield Park, Glenfield and Ferndale Drive, Ratby developments. The proposals, which are being delivered by the County Council on behalf of the developers for the above sites are:• Grass/Vegetation management, tree pruning and branch removal to ensure that the route remains clear and accessible • A new 3 or 2.5 metre wide (where widths allow) hard surface (tarmac) • Access improvements where appropriate • New seating will be considered Illumination of the route from typical street lighting is not proposed. The scheme satisfies the objectives set out in the current Leicestershire County Council Local Transport Plan and will create an inviting attractive route with a durable surface to benefit existing users and also encourage new users to the trail. Subject to the outcomes of the consultation exercise and confirmation of available funding, LCC intend to commence works later this year. I have held a site meeting with the lead officer in respect to the entrances along the route as they currently have railway sleepers across the entrances to stop motor cycles. I have asked the officer to come up with a scheme that takes into consideration access for disability scooters. If this project receives the funding this is certainly good news for the residents of Ratby. It will give an improved access between Ratby and Glenfield. I would like to thank residents for their continued support. I would also like to remind you all that I am only a phone call or email away.

FILMREVIEW LOCAL POLICING The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Certificate TBC The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the incendiary sequel to the first movie and takes things to an even darker place. Having won the 74th Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) go on a victors’ tour, something that inadvertently inspires the citizens to resistance and hopes of a revolution. The powers that be can see only one way out of this situation: to kill not only Katniss and Peeta but to destroy their ‘race’, anyone who has ever won the Hunger Games. But they’re not going to go easily. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ramps all the action up from the genius first installment. Out 21st November

Gravity - 12A Gravity tells the story of Dr. Ryan Stone - played by Sandra Bullock a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth...and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left, but the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. Gravity is a visual masterpiece with stunning performances from Bullock and Clooney alike.

We Need More Local News Stories?

Over the last month there has been an increase in Anti Social Behaviour on Ferndale Park involving children throwing apples. We have increased our patrols and have conducted some education with the children on the parks and with local youth groups. We have also had a number of parking issues reported, including vehicles blocking the pavements. We have issued a number of parking tickets in Ratby village, especially outside the sports club. We have also been paying attention to the parking on yellow lines outside the chip shop, and moving vehicles on as and when we see them. We also recently visited the Ratby girl’s brigade and helped them to achieve some of their badges. Now the evenings are getting darker earlier we would like to remind residents to make sure that you are keeping your property secure. During the day: • Keep your doors and windows secure at all times even when at home; • Consider using window shock alarms; • Restrict access to the rear of your property; • Security mark your property; • Consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme; • Be aware of people acting suspiciously near your home and report incidents immediately During the Night: • Use light timers to make your home appear occupied when you are out; • Use exterior security lighting around your homes; • Lock all doors and windows when you go to bed; • Don’t advertise your property to thieves – make sure it can’t be seen through the window; • Be aware of people acting suspiciously near your home and report incidents immediately; • Register your property free of charge at www.immobilise.com I would also like to take this opportunity to remind people that we hold regular beat surgeries within the area which are all advertised online at www.leics.police.uk. LFE Film Evenings The 2013-2104 community cinema season started in September to a very full house. An audience of over 70 people enjoyed the film, which was “Song for Marion”. Since the idea of running a community cinema was launched in September 2010, audience numbers have steadily increased. It is proving to be a very popular event in the local calendar – providing as it does an opportunity to enjoy recently released films, and at the same time meet-up and chat with other people. The objective is to screen recently released films as soon as they are available (British-made ones where feasible). Choice of films is made by the audience – a short list provided, and everyone gets a chance to vote. A very democratic process! Suggestions are always welcome, too.

Lucy Whitfield wins Karate Gold! Groby Community College A-Level student Lucy Whitfield represented England at the WIKF World Championships in Crawley at the end of September, coming away with a Gold medal in the Kata. Lucy, who won Sportswoman of the Year at last years Sports Presentation Evening, has been working hard towards this event and it is a fantastic achievement to be crowned the world's best in her category. She has previously competed at the European Championships in Greece, winning a bronze medal in the team event. However, the experience of standing on the podium, wearing her Gold medal with 'God Save The Queen' playing, will take some beating. Lucy is also training towards her 3rd Dan, which would make her one of the youngest 3rd Dan members of the WIKF, ever! Well done Lucy!

The choice for December is “In Love with Alma Cogan”.

For many, this tax may not pose such a dramatic threat but there are other circumstances that can also have damaging effects on a family’s wealth, such as beneficiaries who get divorced or remarried, fall into bankruptcy or decide to spend, spend, and spend! For many of my clients the thought of a lifetime’s worth of savings being eroded in this way is extremely distressing. They want their family line to benefit in the long term rather than just providing a short term windfall for their immediate next of kin. An effective solution I often recommend is the use of trusts, which basically puts you, as a settlor, firmly in control. Different trusts can be used in a wide variety of ways to suit each individual situation, with one of the most popular ones being the Discretionary Will Trust. As the name implies it is used in conjunction with your Will to help ensure that your wishes are adhered to when you will not be in a position to do so!

CHRISTMAS ISSUE OUT 9th DECEMBER

A date has been set for a series of consultations on the future shape of a number of subsidised bus services in Leicestershire. The six week consultations are due to be launched on Monday, November 4. Last year, the county council asked residents for their views on proposed changes to rural bus services, which would save the authority around £750,000 per year. Having considered people’s responses and suggestions the council will now ask people for their further views on the revised proposals which will cover these routes. The proposals will include timetable reductions on some bus services and the use of Demand Responsive Transport to replace others. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Each of these routes is subsidised and under-used with some carrying an average of one or two passengers per journey, and the most heavily subsidised costing the council more than £14 per passenger per journey. “With the tough savings the council has to make this is unsustainable, so we will are looking at reviewing these services and, in some cases, proposing different travel options. “We hope people will take the time to have their say and let us know what they think.” People will be able to have their say online or by picking up a leaflet on their bus journey or requesting a hard copy of the consultation – details will be available at a later date.

Change in waste site opening times New opening hours for Leicestershire’s recycling and household waste sites (RHWS) come into force this weekend. From Saturday (November 2) the 14 sites run by Leicestershire County Council will open five days a week from 9am to 4pm. These hours will be in place throughout the winter months, then from April 1 to September 30 each year sites will open seven days a week from 9am – 7pm. The reduction in opening hours was made following a public consultation, which more than 2,600 people took part in, to help save around £300,000 per year. The five day pattern of opening is being arranged so that all sites are open at weekends and a proportion of the sites remain open each day for use by the public in the week. Blake Pain, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for waste management, said: “The council has to save £110m in five years and consider new ways of delivering services, which is why we have reviewed reducing the RHWS opening hours. “There has also been a reduction in the amount of waste that goes through our RHWS, as well as the number of visitors to the sites, over the past few years so it made sense for us to look at this now. “We did some research into the least busy times and listened to what people had to say before making the amendments to the times.” The council’s RHWS are at Barwell, Bottesford, Coalville, Kibworth, Loughborough, Lount, Lutterworth, Market Harborough, Melton, Mountsorrel, Oadby, Shepshed, Somerby and Whetstone. For more information about when individual sites are open or closed in the winter, and for more details on recycling and waste in Leicestershire, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/waste

Charity searches Great Fun At Friezeland for new recruits in Leicestershire and Rutland Number with dementia due to rise in Leicestershire and Rutland over next decade.

People in and around Leicestershire and Rutland are being urged to help Alzheimer’s Society to support people living with dementia. The charity is looking for volunteers for its Side by Side Befriending Service. Volunteers would need to give up to four hours a week to support people in the early stages of dementia. There are already thought to be 12000 people with the condition in Leicestershire and Rutland. By 2021, that number is likely to reach 16000. Suna Tilley from Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland says: “The Side by Side service provides stimulation for people with dementia, which could be mental or physical. It may be companionship, such as sitting and having a cup of tea or it could be helping and joining them in an activity or hobby. The service is important because it reduces people’s feelings of isolation.“ “Volunteers will be matched with people with dementia who share similar interests. They will gain valuable experience and develop a sense of value by providing a much needed and worthwhile voluntary service.” The Leicestershire and Rutland Locality of Alzheimer’s Society provides ongoing training and support to all volunteers, who will be CRB checked and who should be over the age of 18. Potential recruits are asked to contact Suna Tilley on 0116 231 1113 or email: suna.tilley@alzheimers.org.uk

Borough Councillors Report

Our Open Box office is ready for Christmas thanks to Friezeland Christmas Trees who gave us a tour of their farm and a beautiful Nordaman tree. Situated opposite Bosworth Water Trust the former arable farm started its conversion into a Christmas Tree farm 28 years ago. After driving up a beautiful drive surrounded by historic farm buildings you reach a beautifully decorated Christmas shop in a rustic log cabin.

Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

The variety of shapes and sizes of tree available has to be seen to be believed. They offer trees for every need from towering Norway Spruces that would look stunning in a large hallway or business entrance to the Nordaman which retain their needles for longer and would be better suited to warm office environments. Friezeland Christmas Tree farm is a family run business and it’s clear that they are very passionate about their product. This year they have planted 24,000 tiny new trees which will take approximately 10 years to be ready for your home. Currently they have over 100,000 trees in the ground growing at an average of 1ft a year. Each tree is hand pruned twice a year to encourage the beautiful shape we require from our Christmas Trees and also base pruned to allow the wind to circulate the tree and blow any dead needles away. At Friezeland trees there is no need to worry about not being able to have the tree of your dreams as you are welcome to go along to tag your chosen tree. You can then return nearer to Christmas to either cut it or dig it out if you would prefer a rooted tree. They are open to 5pm in the evening 7 days a week and you can choose your tree from their floodlit field; your tree is then carried back to your car on a wooden trailer pulled by beautiful Newfoundland Dogs. What a perfect way to start preparing for the festive season!

Pavement Repairs Bevington Close. Residents reported problems with the paving outside the Bungalows in Bevington close to the Borough Council at the beginning of June this year. A housing inspector from the Borough Council attended on the 14th June and declared the paving dangerous. The area has been fenced off with 8 foot high herras metal fencing since that date. Despite residents making several calls to the Borough Council over the following months nothing happened. Pensioners were greeted with the sight of metal fencing every time they looked out of their lounge window. We were contacted on Saturday 12th October and Ozzy went straight up to find a large area fenced off. This was clearly a very unsatisfactory situation for the residents. We made contact with officers and had a meeting with the housing finance officer on the Monday. We told her that this was extremely poor service and to quote one resident the Borough was not one to be proud of. We demanded urgent action on behalf of residents. To our surprise the Borough Council used this as a PR exercise and brought workmen in two days later one of them being the apprentice surveyor of the year and they invited central TV down to meet him of course we were not invited to speak with the TV or we might just have told them some home truths of how we in the northern parishes are treated by the Borough Council. Had this been in Hinckley, the repairs would have been dealt with straight away. However we are pleased to announce that subject to local consultation , the area will now be grassed over and cut and maintained on a regular basis. Update on Gypsy and Traveller pitches. Following our last article regarding the Lib/Dem administration's plans to flood the Northern Parishes with 30 more pitches by extending existing site, we have held both public and private meetings to assess the potential impact. It now emerges that a consultation period will commence in the summer of 2014 and a final document will be presented to Council in 2015. We have also learned that the administration at HBBC instructed the authors of the initial report to only look and assess existing sites which are well away from Hinckley. We will keep you updated on further updates.

ASB Ferndale Park. We are still having reports of damage being caused on the park. Someone has smashed the side of one of the metal jumps on the skate park. They must have used a hammer to bash the side in, someone must have seen or heard them as it would have made a lot of noise. Over the past couple of months we have had equipment damaged, young tree’s torn out the ground and others broken down. We need the residents support if you witness any such incidents please ring the police on 101 and report it. This is costing the tax payers of Ratby and it cannot continue. Remembrance Sunday. Once again we would like to thank Ratby residents for their wonderful support on this day. As Chris is the Parade Marshall for the village, he was so grateful for the impressive turnout especially as we had a BBC camera crew filming the event as part of a future documentary that is an update of a previous programme called our war. Also in attendance was Deputy Lord Lieutenant Lady Palmer who we were delighted to have and who laid the Queen's Wreath. The Snow Queen at Kirby Muxloe Free Church A brand new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter tale.

CLA scrap metal victory will frustrate thieves PRICES HELD The CLA says that licensing laws introduced on 1 October – as a result of campaigning by the Association – will make it even tougher for thieves to dispose of stolen scrap metal.

Join Kai and Gerda on their icy adventure this Christmas. Filled with song, dance and plenty of festive wonder, the Snow Queen is suitable for all ages.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 will require all scrap dealers to apply for a licence from their local authority and to keep records on who they buy from.

Thursday 12th December at 7pm Kirby Muxloe Free Church, Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, Leicester, LE9 2AN

CLA Midlands Rural Adviser donna Tavernor said: “We are pleased to see the results of our lobbying put in place so the growing problem of metal theft can begin to be tackled.

Together with the ban on cash payments for scrap introduced earlier this year, the opportunity for thieves to dispose of scrap metal without being traced has become almost impossible.

“We believe new regulation should only be put in place when absolutely necessary, in this case to deal with the menace of scrap metal thieves. “Farm machinery, lead stolen from roofs, and copper cable taken from power and phone lines all cause major problems to rural business and communities so these changes to the system will give local authorities real power to combat the rise of metal theft.”

Leicestershire RSPCA Christmas Craft Fair Leicestershire RSPCA will be holding their annual Christmas Craft Fair in aid of the Woodside Animal Centre on Sunday the 17th of November at the Groby Vilage Hall from 10am to 4pm.There will be a variety of seasonal items, RSPCA goods pet tombola and excellent refreshments. Father Christmas is also expected to call in after checking up on Rudolph and his friends in Bradgate Park. Meanwhile he reminds us that pets are for life not just for Christmas. Christmas at Woodside. The RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre will be celebrating Christmas with an open evening fro 3pm to 6pm on Sunday the 8th of December. There will be craft stalls, lots of RSPCA seasonal goods for sale, mulled wine and mince pies too. Father Christmas will be there to greet you and the animal housing will be open to view.

Thanks also to all the youth organizations and to the Ratby band and to the Police ensuring the Parade's safety. See you all again next year !

Projection is provided by Phoenix Arts, using computerised equipment, and we now have our own three-metre wide permanent screen to project onto, which gives a real cinema experience.

Venue: the Parish Hall, Kings Drive, LFE. Cost: £5. Doors open at 7.00pm, when a complimentary hot drink and biscuits are provided. The showings start at 7.30pm.

I recently attended a seminar where a case study showed how over 50% of the original value of an estate could be lost to Inheritance Tax by the time it had passed down through three generations of beneficiaries in the family.

Perfect preparation can ensure that your lifetime’s wealth is protected as much as possible for the future of your family! If this area is of interest to you then do seek suitably qualified advice to help tackle the issues sooner rather than later.

A popular introduction last season was the idea of giving a free raffle ticket to each customer as they arrive. After the showing, the draw is made, and the lucky winner gets a free voucher for two people at a future showing. This will continue for the coming season.

To find out what the next showing is, look for the posters on the Parish notice boards, in the local libraries, and in some shops.

SPECIAL

Beat Surgeries are an opportunity to speak face to face with a local officer to discuss any policing concerns you may have. If you unable to attend a beat surgery but would like to report an issue of concern please call us on 101. If you see a crime taking place or witness any suspicious activity please call the Police on 999 in an emergency or 101 for a non-emergency. PC 4675 Katie Harris - Market Bosworth SNT

Future generations and wildlife do not have a voice, but YOU DO! your LOCAL, Bringing Local Businesses and Local People Together

For further information on Diabetes and insulin passports please feel free to contact us on 0116 2387353. The Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe Irfan Kassam MPharm (GphC) MRPharmS
