Senior cricket – competitive 1st & 2nd team playing in the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket League. New players always welcome!

Brookvale Groby Learning Campus Year 10 boys rugby team retained the County Plate title that they won previously in Year 9. The game was played in tough conditions at Leicester Forest RFC against a decent John Fernley side. However, we managed to string some excellent phases of rugby together to outscore our opponents by 8 tries to 2. Tom Allen opened the scoring, with Luis Parry and Sam Jacques (2) adding to this in the first half. Sam Jacques scored another two triesď — in the second half with Luis Parry scoring again after a free flowing move that started in our own 22. Zak Golding completed the scoring with a well worked try and Tom Allen finished with 4 conversions for a final score of 48-12.

Club Sponsorship – we are very proud of our relationships with local businesses. We have a range of flexible and attractive packages available for the coming season (all year round sponsorship) For more information on any of the above please contact Nigel Wain Tel: 07837023671 nigelwain68@yahoo.co.uk

of the Ratby Co-operative Band (Registered Charity No. 1011147) are celebrating after a run of recent concert and competition successes.

There are over 500 competing brass bands in the UK and the Midlands Region boasts 78. Championship 12 bands, First Section 16, Second Section 13, Third Section 16 and Fourth Section 21. Promotions and relegations are calculated based on three years results. In 2016, 2017 and 2018 the Senior band were placed fourth at the competition held in Bedworth and has gone one better this year being placed third. A great result tinged slightly as only the top two bands receive an invitation to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London at the Nations Finals in October. Maybe next year!

BACKGROUND - Brass bands are graded and much like football teams are organized in National Sections according to their ability. The Senior Band are in the Championship section and the Mid Band are in the Fourth. Ratby Band, which has been in existence now for over 100 years currently has two registered competing bands. In total we have five bands at Ratby including a thriving Junior Section where beginners are given the opportunity to learn to play brass and percussion instruments by qualified teachers at the bandroom on Taverner Drive, Ratby.

Any followers of the film “Brassed Off” will have seen the many bands competing in the Saddleworth and Tameside areas of Manchester. Ratby will be competing in this event on “Whit Friday” where we will be up against UK and International Bands. During that evening there are nearly 150 bands performing at the various locations.

FUND RAISING - Running an organization is both costly and time consuming. The band have a ‘200 Club’, prizes being £50 per month and bumper prizes at Christmas. New members are always welcome and the cost is £18 per annum.

Having said that the Mid Band beat off stiff competition to be crowned Midlands Fourth Section Champions for which they have received prizes and an invitation to perform at the Centaur Theatre, Cheltenham on 14th September. Well done to their conductor Gary Perrin and we wish them well at the finals and promotion to the Third Section from January 2020.

Please visit our website for details of our forthcoming events or leave a message and we’ll get back to you. You may wish to book one of the bands for an event, know more about us or maybe you would like to learn to play a brass or percussion instrument. https://ratbyband.com

Library and also at St Bart’s Tea Shop (Church Hall, Main St., Tuesdays 2:30-4:30pm) Price ÂŁ6. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st of May when the subject will be “Life in Tudor Leicesterâ€?, the speaker Felicity Austin, a well known local history speaker. The second half of the meeting will include our A.G.M.- a polite reminder: subscriptions of ÂŁ10 for the year will be due at this meeting.

Barwell Road, Kirby Muxloe – after 1960 This month we complete the shops and businesses along Barwell Road. By late 1960, some of the businesses on Barwell Road had closed their doors for the last time. As we began to see the advent of the first supermarkets in our area, our shopping habits changed. Time had passed us by and the small shops, often in the front room of a house, had almost disappeared. On Barwell Road, Goodalls, which had been managed by Arthur Bird became Mace and was managed by a Mr Welsh. Over the next few years, a number of people ran the shop, until around 2007, when the owners converted the shop area into a flat, turning the building into a totally residental property. The old sign for “Mackeson’s can still be seen painted on the upper outside wall of the building. Number 12, Barwell Road has been home to various hair dressers and beauty salons in the intervening years and still supports a beauty salon today.

Looking at the large array of confectionary in the bottles on the shelves behing the counter, the orders come in thick and fast! 20p worth of fizzy fishes and 30p of liquorice topedoes, Âź of mixed jelly babies and cola bottles! Marie serves up all the small quantities of weekend treats with the utmost patience and good humour. It reminded me of the time when we could buy 1d (one penny in old money before decimilization in 1971) worth of multi -coloured kali in a pointed bag, back in the 1950’s or before. Just along Barwell Road, not far from Thompsons, Cyril Furborough and his mother ran a Sunday newspaper business. The Furborough’s were newspaper wholesalers who didn’t have a shop, just a rack on the outside wall of their house, holding Sunday newspapers. Payment was by the means of an “honesty boxâ€?, most people paid, possibly occasionally someone did not! Many of us will remember Mrs Furborough going door to door to collect the Sunday newspaper money. At that time, Thompsons were closed on Sundays. By 1996, Thompsons had taken over the Sunday newspaper round and opened their shop on Sundays and the Furboroughs had retired.

6

Lastly, the Primary School at the end of Barwell Road gained a swimming pool in the 1970’s, after much fun-raising work put in by the P.F.A. In recent years, the school has been subjected to many alterations and extensions, in an effort to support the growing need for more children’s places.

The Worth’s haberdashery shop was taken over by Mrs Hill around 1975, the name being changes to“Young Ideas. The shop was popular with mothers, picking up their children from school, and sold knitting wool, baby and children’s wear, together with an assortment of haberdashery items. Mrs Hill

Vic Thompson, who originally took over Heighton’s newsagents, sold his business to the Richards family in 1975. The name was retained and to this day the shop is still named Thompsons. Now run by Mark and Marie Richards, it is a busy and popular newsagent, stationers and confectionary shop. Walking into the shop on a Friday afternoon at about 3:20, you will always be confronted with a crocodile of children, snaking around the shop and often out of the door. Friday afternoon, after school, appears to be “sweetie time, the childrens’ requests are very interesting.

would always “put some wool on one side so that people could purchase a ball at a time, as their knitting progressed. The wool that was put aside was usually stocked on the top shelf to keep it safe. Again, time moves on and habits change, many people no longer made their own children’s clothes or knitted their own cardigans and jumpers, preferring to shop in Leicester and buy clothes off the rack. Mrs Hill retired around 1995 and the shop closed. At that time, a planning application was submitted for a fish and chip shop on the premisies but there was much opposition and the application was turned down. Fairly soon afterwards, the shop premises were conveted into a pre- school named Kirby Muxloe Day Nursery. On the opposite side of the road, the red telephone box was removed and the building which had housed Townsend’s Post Office and Garner’s greengrocery shop reverted back into a private house.

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Have Your Say on New Planning Guidance Residents and businesses are being invited to have their say on the latest planning guidance for new build developments and extensions when a new consultation opens next month. The Borough Council will be consulting on a document - known as ‘The Good Design Supplementary Planning Document’ (SPD) for four weeks starting on the 15th April 2019. Once agreed, the document will guide developers, agents and members of the public with the design of their developments and extensions. It will set out the general principles accepted by the council for new residential, existing residential, barn conversions, commercial and shop front developments. The Council will publish the consultation version of The Good Design SPD and details of how to comment on its website on 15th April and anyone who wishes to take part has until 12th May 2019 to do so. Following the consultation, comments will be analysed and necessary changes will be incorporated into the final document for adoption by the council, anticipated to be later this year. To take part, go to hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk and select ‘have your say’ from 15 April onwards

Voters urged to make sure they are registered to vote With just under five weeks to go until the local elections, the Borough Council is encouraging its residents to make sure they’re registered to vote.

Cllr Chris Boothby Tel: 01162 161461 or 07880 711222 Email: chris.boothby@hotmail.com

On Thursday 2 May local voters will go to the polls to elect their Borough and Parish Councillors. Bill Cullen, Chief Executive at Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, said: “I am encouraging everyone eligible to vote in Hinckley and Bosworth to take action now if they haven’t registered to vote already, particularly residents who have recently moved and young people who will be 18 on or before 2 May. He Said “Our message is simple: if you are not registered by 12 April, you can’t vote. It’s easy to do and only takes a few minutes online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote . If you’re not sure, please double check.” To register to vote visit www.gov.uk/registerto-vote Residents can also check whether they’re registered to vote by calling the council on Tel. 01455 255835.

Planning Consultation re possible Application Markfield Road Ratby for 175 more Houses. All residents will have received recently an invitation to attend Ratby Library in order to view plans by the Charterhouse Group which seeks to submit an application to HBBC to build up to 175 residential dwellings on land between Markfield Rd and the M1. This will be on Wednesday 10th April from 4.30 -7pm. We both met with these agents some 3 months ago to discuss this plan and at that time they were looking at two possible entrance / exit points. One on Groby Rd and the other on Markfield Rd. Since then the Groby Rd option has been dropped so the entrance / exit will be on Markfield Rd, near to the right hand bend where the old telephone box used to be. We both feel that this application is unnecessary and unacceptable for the

following reasons. Firstly, the visibility exiting the site is non-existent so therefore dangerous. Secondly, this will put an extra 350 potential vehicle movements onto the village road network which struggles at present to cope as Ratby is already used as a rat run to access the A50 and the HGV's using Ratby to get to Desford Lane breaking the weight limits. Thirdly, the impact on the local infrastructure, especially schools, will have an effect on established residents who already have to compete to get their children into our oversubscribed primary and secondary schools and finally, under the local plan and HBBC's 5 year Housing Policy, there is no further allocated need for housing in the village. We will both be there and would invite all residents to support us in opposing this incongruous development both on the day and at the Planning Committee should it go that far.

Borough Council Easter opening hours THE following opening times during the Easter period have been announced by the Borough Council, together with the arrangements that have been made for various council services: Council office closing times Borough Council services at the Hinckley Hub will be closed on Good Friday 19 April and Easter Monday 22 April and re-open on Tuesday 23 April at 8.30am. In an emergency call 01455 251137

Refuse & recycling arrangements All refuse and recycling collections will continue as usual during the Easter period, with normal collections on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

April 1st to 7th was Diabetes Prevention Week and so we want to take this opportunity to raise awareness Around 200,000 people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every year, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk. Making small changes to your lifestyle now can make a big impact on your future health. This means you can reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and the risk of serious complications that can come with it. That's why we're working with the practice to raise awareness about diabetes. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a serious condition where your blood glucose/sugar level is too high. There are two main types, Type I and type 2. They are different conditions, but they’re both serious and can need medication or injections to manage. What can you do to reduce the risk? By managing your weight, eating well and moving more will substantially help you to reduce the risk. Dealing with diabetes can be daunting, whether you're newly diagnosed, an old hand, or even if it's someone you know who has the condition. Having someone to talk to can make all the difference. Why not talk to the practice nurse who will be happy to help you. You could also go to Diabetes UK https://www.diabetes.org.uk who have a wealth of information including a forum where you can talk to other people with the same condition. Don't forget it is important for you to get your regular diabetes checks at your surgery

Working for you.

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US?

Other news for you One of our members of the PPG asked if the Surgery would consider painting the hand rail at the entrance in yellow. This is to make it easier for people with sight loss to get access to the surgery. We are pleased to say that the doctors willingly responded and now we have a yellow handrail.

We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk

If you want to know more about the PPG or even interested in joining you can go to the website and go to the Patient Participation Group page www.ratbysurgery.nhs.uk

Want to improve your writing skills? Share views and laughter with others? Would you like to join a small, friendly, local group looking for new members? We are THE VILLAGE WRITERS and we’ve been writing and meeting locally, together for over three years. We meet 7.30 to 9.30 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, and, although we meet in Kirkby Muxloe , our members are drawn from a much wider area. There’s no special standard you have to reach: An interest in thoughts and words, and the shaping of them in writing, is the only requirement. 

‘Homework’ on a particular theme is set each meeting. But there’s no obligation to do it. Perhaps you have something quite different you want to get an ‘audience reaction’ to? Or, sometimes, just to listen to others. That’s one of the key reasons we exist: to get others positive/helpful/creative feedback which can improve our writing. Another is that meeting regularly is a helpful Motivator!

RATBY PARISH COUNCIL Tel: 0116 239 0167 - Email: ratbypcouncil@btconnect.com

PARKING ON GRASS VERGES - The Council is receiving constant complaints regarding the parking of vehicles on grass verges. This not only tears up the ground and creates ruts and makes the area look unsightly, it also impedes the grass cutting Contractor when carrying out his work. It also upsets residents who try and keep their fronts looking tidy.

DOG FOULING -

Despite the Council having numerous dog waste bins, plus the ordinary bins provided by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, there are still a small number of dog owners who do not clear up after their pets. The Parish Council pays for the bins to be regularly emptied and there is really no excuse to leave dog waste on the pavements, parks etc. Most dog owners act responsibly but there is a small minority of dog owners who do not take responsibility for their animals.   

Year 3 – Engineering Project

Four talented pupils in Year 3 were invited to take part in an Engineering project at South Charnwood School. They were set a challenge to build something that could support an egg when it was dropped from a height. They were given a budget and had to choose what they would like buy from a selection of resources. Calling all knitters!

The EYFS pet roadshow is always one of the children’s favourite experiences in their first year at school and this year was no exception! There was a remarkable variety of pets, including reptiles, birds and mammals (not forgetting our well-loved class guinea pigs, Nelly and Nora). We learnt that Alfie, Scarlett and Laura’s tortoises all have one thing in common; they are all quite good at escaping and climbing out of things. Don’t be fooled by their slow reputation! Dawson’s hamster can somehow climb and hang off the roof bars of his cage like a bat! Emily’s rabbit is toilet trained – we didn’t know a rabbit could do that (handy for cleaning out)! The EYFS staff and adult visitors were impressed with the children’s gentle and respectful behaviour around the animals. Well done Sunshines and Rainbows classes – we are so proud.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com • Narrows the gap between the highest and lowest funded councils.

Leicestershire County Councils Fair Funding Campaign. Leicestershire remains the lowest-funded county in the country. If it was funded at the same level as Surrey, it would be £104 million per year better off, or £350 million, compared to Camden. Find out more below about our calls for reform. How does Leicestershire compare to other councils? Leicestershire fares badly, and has been the lowest funded county for many years. If it was funded at the same level as Surrey, it would be £104 million per year better off, or £350 million, compared to Camden. What’s wrong with the current system? We believe it doesn’t share national resources fairly – this view is shared by many others in local government because: • It doesn’t match funding with an area’s needs, creating a postcode lottery. • It's out-of-date, complex and unclear, as it’s based on old systems, which focus heavily on past spending levels. What does it mean for the Leicestershire? We’ve planned ahead for reduced funding and saved £200million so far. But with demand for services increasing, pressure on our budget is tightening. What action has the council taken? For many years, we’ve been pressing the government for change. In 2016, we developed a new simplified funding model which shares resources fairly and - supported by Leicestershire’s seven MPs – presented it to ministers and senior civil servants at Westminster. What does the government say? Our campaign has secured a review. The government has announced it's revising the way local government funding is calculated and is planning to issue a consultation. More details are expected to be announced in late 2019. How is your proposal fairer? Our new model: • Allocates money in a fair way, based on need. This is a more just way of distributing money, and importantly, gives Leicestershire its fair share. • Is a simple, clear formula, based on factors that drive demand for local services, such as the number of older people, the length of roads travelled by HGVs and the number of school-age children.

20

What happens next? We are asking you to explore the facts and figures, please follow the below link and click on fairer funding https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-yoursay/current-consultations

Arriva Bus Service Ratby I have been contacted by several elderly residents some with disabilities who rely on the Arriva Bus Service no. 27 to get home and to visit the doctors. However I have been told that on Saturday 23rd March the bus was not going up Whittington Drive because they could not access it due to parked cars. I appreciate residents on Whittington Drive park their vehicles with due consideration for the bus route. Can I please ask residents parking on all bus routes to please leave a clear passage for the bus as our elderly and disabled residents depend on that service? Thank you. Over the weekend I was advised that Arriva had not travelled down Whittington Drive on Friday 29th March or Monday 1st April due to road works that were due to take place on Markfield Road. I contacted the Management at Arriva who told me they would not be able access Whittington Drive all week due to these road works. I then made contact with Highways and was told that it had been agreed Arriva could go through the road closures and operate normally as the workers would ensure their access along Markfield Road. I went back to Arriva and confirmed with Arriva they would resume the route around Whittington Drive the next day.

Don’t Be Afraid To Say No To Cold Callers Due to the recent warm weather Trading Standards have seen an increase in reports of cold callers offering gardening and roofing work. The reports include overcharging for unnecessary work, asking for more money than originally quoted, following residents into their home to see where cash is kept and claiming to be from the local council. Remember: • It is ok to say NO if you don’t want the work done. • Check the ID of people calling at your door. A genuine trader won’t mind if you take a moment to check out their legitimacy. • If someone knocks on your door and you don’t know who they are, don’t let them in. • If there is any doubt, don’t agree to any work.

Rogue traders can be reported to Trading Standards on 03454 04 05 06, or dial 101 or 999 in an emergency.

New Council Tax Scam Fraudsters are targeting people in a new council tax scam by suggesting they are owed a refund. The email says that the receiver has overpaid on their council tax bill and includes links which take you to a website to enter your details. Known as a phishing scam, once you click on the link you are taken to a fake government website where you are asked for your personal details as well as bank information to claim a refund. However, once you have entered your details the fraudsters will use the information to withdraw money from your account. Action Fraud says it has received over 100 reports in the last month of the scam. Scam watch: beware pug bandits selling pets and accessories online that don’t exist Mark White, chief executive of fraud prevention service Reassura, says: "This is a play on the classic phishing scam where fraudsters trick victims into handing over financial details, the new twist is telling people that they are owed a refund. “Phishing attacks are the most common personal scams worldwide and recent data from America showed average losses per victim last year of £3,800." Other council tax scams include one where fraudsters call victims telling them they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket and are entitled to a rebate. Once the victim is convinced, the fraudster tells them that in order to receive the rebate they will need to pay an administration fee in advance – often between £60-350. After the victim has provided their details and made the payment they find are then no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone. Bank transfer scam victims to be refunded under new rules How to protect yourself Call your council – If you receive an email contact your council in our case its Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council telephone 01455 238141 Please do not use the one in the email as this is will be a fake. You can always call me on 0116 2394336 or mobile 07808585825 I will always try to help you. Check the grammar – Councils will always proof-read correspondence sent out to you. So if the email contains lots of grammar or spelling mistakes there is a good chance that it is fake.

Contact the bank - If you are worried you have given out your bank details to a fraudster contact your bank immediately and explain what happened. Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic - Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name or address), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Criminals can easily spoof the phone numbers and email addresses of companies you know and trust. Check unsolicited requests - Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information, and never click on the links and attachments in emails or texts you receive out of the blue. If you have been a victim of fraud or cybercrime you can report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Thieves are Cold Calling at People’s Homes Trading Standards are warning residents about a doorstep con where the elderly victim was tricked into handing over her bank card, hundreds of pounds was then taken from her account. The Rogue trader knocked on the victim’s door offering cleaning products. The victim agreed to buy items and handed her card to the trader. He then told the victim he needs to go to his van to do the payment and was gone for a good 15 minutes which he returned and handed the card back to the victim. The victim later found out that 100’s of pounds was taken out from her bank account. Report rogue traders to Trading Standards

on 03454 040506 or dial 101 or 999 in an emergency. Trading Standards are encouraging people to become a Friend Against Scams and get information that you can use to prevent you, your friends and family from becoming scam victims. Sign up at www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk Finally I want to thank you all for your continued support and remind you that should you need my help or advice, I always pride myself on making myself available to residents. Remember I am only a phone call or email away.

Street Lighting Sacheverell Way Groby - Residents have approached me complaining of the lack of lighting and have raised concerns for both the safety of pedestrians and motorists using Sacheverell Way at night. I fully support their concerns and I want to see them replaced. To that end I am asking residents and the Parish Council to support me in my campaign to have the street lights reinstalled. I have left Petitions in Wilsons Convenience Store, Pricegate, Both Co-Ops, The Library and Post Office in Groby and well as the shops and the Library in Ratby. I have already met with Blake Pain the Cabinet member for Highways on Sacheverell way pointing out my concerns. I support Councillor Ozzy O'shea Campaign to reinstate the Street Lighting along Sacheverell Way, Groby.

I urge the County Council to reinstate the lights on Sacheverell Way on Health and Safety Grounds. This road is a very busy and fast road even though it is restricted to 40mph. Speeding is an issue and the police safety camera van regularly monitors traffic. Sacheverell Way is a HGV route, a Diversion route, it is also used by walkers, joggers, lone females who now feel unsafe. School children some of whom attend after school classes also heavily use this road and need lighting on Health and Safety Grounds.

Please post to Ratby Parish Council, 13 Station Road, Ratby. Ratby Post Office, 30 Main Street, Ratby, LE6 0JG Or Ozzy O'shea 19 Heathbrook Drive, Ratby, Leicestershire LE60XB.

Glenfield

Country Market It is 100 years since the first Country Market opened. In 1919 members of the fledgling Women’s Institute saw the need, after World War I, for preserves and fresh food to be available for all. In that time of food shortages and hardship following the return of men from the front, women were suddenly asked the leave the jobs they had been doing in factories and on the land in order to provide employment for the men. This left them with no income of their own, so an opportunity to use garden produce for jam and to sell the surplus veg they had grown was welcomed. So, WI markets was formed and held in village halls around the country.

For more details contact: glenfieldmarket@gmail.com They came into their own during World War II as well, making sure every raspberry was turned into jam and not a single cabbage was wasted. Some craft was done too as women were encouraged to “make do and mend” and produce clothing and blankets which were in short supply. Jams and preserves were so precious and the fear of invasion so real, that they were kept in locked and guarded cupboards between markets with instructions that they should be destroyed rather than be allowed to fall into enemy hands! Again, after the war, women were sent ‘back to the kitchen’ and found a welcome outlet for their time and skills at the WI market.

The next big change was when the Charities Commission came into being and stated that the WI could not run a business as well as having charitable status, so restructuring and a name change to ‘Country Markets Ltd’ was necessary, though still with the WI ethos for high standards and only products grown or made by producers allowed to be sold. So here we are, a century later.

Carers – join us at Cedar Mews for this FREE session

Thursday 11th April, 2.00-4.00pm

You may have read before that there is a Country Market every Friday in Glenfield. We open at St Peter’s Church Centre from 9am – 11am. There is a cake stall with preserves and a wide choice of tasty home bakes, savoury and sweet. There is a craft stall where our talented crafters present a vast array of different handmade goods to suit all pockets. On the plant and gardens stall a range of homegrown plants are available, both for indoors and outdoors, and seasonal homegrown produce. There are also handcrafted birdboxes, bat boxes, bug hotels and hedgehog-nest boxes and feeders to help us to encourage wildlife into our gardens.

Come and discover ways to make time for yourself in your busy caring role, why it matters and the benefits for your health. Speak to professionals about support and network with other carers. To book please contact Jeanette Silver at Age UK t: 01509 260 327 Or contact: Cedar Mews Care Home, Hallam Field Road, Birstall, Leicester LE4 3LX t: 0116 267 4835 I e: cedar.haa@cinnamoncc.com

This popular weekly event is open to members of the wider local community who come along to have a chat over refreshments from our friendly café area. People who attend the Market, as customers or producers, are encouraged to get involved in activities organised to reflect the seasons. In December we once again invited everyone to wear festive clothes and colours and are currently in the process of organising our popular Easter Bonnet Competition which is usually well supported and much enjoyed.

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US?

As Glenfield and the surrounding villages expand with new housing developments, we know that new residents won’t necessarily know that we exist. It’s free entry and there’s parking at the Church Centre itself! Expect a friendly welcome when you arrive. New comers and regulars alike frequently say they love the friendly atmosphere. We are also looking out for more producers, particularly bakers, to attend and to sell their wares – all you need is an up to date Hygiene Certificate (this can be done on line) and to take up Country Market Membership (5p for life membership!)

We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk

LOCAL LETTER Parking on Ratby’s Soft Verges

Hello All and I hope you are keeping well, In the last issue of the local I said that I hoped to bring you some exciting news this month and I am delighted to announce that Ratby Sports Club are launching The Ratby Sports Bar, the Sports Bar has an all new fitted cellar replacing what was a an outdated system, the Sports Bar will have a new range of drinks on tap for your pleasure these include Birra Moretti, Amstel, John Smiths, Strongbow, Strongbow dark fruits, Fosters and Guinness, the Sports Bar has had a makeover with some significant changes to the way the Club used to look. There will be Sky Sports, BT Sports, FREE WIFI, FREE Pool table, FREE football table and FREE table tennis available. The launch night is on 12th April look out for more information on social media and advertising for special promotions that will be available on the night. The Sports Bar will still be available to book for functions, seminars and if you are interested in availability please contact me on the normal contact methods. On the Sporting front the cricket season is fast approaching and both the 1st and 2nd teams are looking for new players if you are interested in joining please get in touch. The archery section, The Boroughs Hill Bowmen will be back outside shooting at the Club again in the next couple of weeks and if you are interested in taking up a new sport then again please contact me for more details. On the football front most teams are coming to the end of their seasons and we already have our first piece of silverware, Ratby Panthers under 15s have this week be crowned champions after winning the league, a fantastic achievement by the lads and a massive congratulations to Kyle Dixon for masterminding the whole thing. By the next issue of the local all football issues will be complete so I will update you on how everything ended up then. We are also looking for new teams at all age groups to come and join us, if you would like to look at our facilities or want to know more please get in touch. Our pitches are also available to hire with our floodlight 11 aside pitch, 7 aside mini soccer pitch which includes dugouts and a stand (if Carlsberg did mini soccer pitches this is probably the best in Leicestershire) and a 9 aside pitch. We are constantly looking for new sports to come and join us at the club so if you are thinking about setting a team or club up come and see us, use us as your home, a Ratby Rugby team would be great, cycling club, running club we have great facilities and with the launch of the Sports Bar a great meeting place and social space for all your members. Come and make us your home! I would like to take the opportunity to thank people that have been instrumental in changes at the club and helping to get the new Sports Bar ready, Zak Bailey has been a great help, Michael Angelo has nothing on him and I’m sure if he had been on the job the Sistine chapel would have been painted in half the time! Someone that does an awful lot of work that goes unnoticed is James Lillystone, James is on the clubs committee and runs the youth club but does so much more around the club most of which goes under the radar, thanks also to Frank Cooper, Harry Lillystone and Jamie Lilleyman. Without people volunteering to give up their free time there would not be the facilities available for sports and clubs. THANK YOU!

It appears to have become common practice for some drivers and workmen to park on Ratby’s soft verges. This is NOT what they were intended for. They are there to help enhance the appearance of our village, which is spoiled by those who park, make indentations in and otherwise churn up these green areas. Whilst measures have been put in place by our parish council to help identify those, who damage playground equipment, by investing in CCTV, these verges are the responsibility of LCC’s Highways Department. They have been contacted re this damage but have replied to say their resources, in these financiallyconstrained times, are severely limited. And so it falls to residents to help keep our soft verges in good order. More often than not, where this damaging behaviour has been observed and photographed, cars could have been parked correctly at the roadside, on residents’ own hard driveways or on residents’ own front grassed areas. Residents who park on soft verges or who allow their friends and workmen to park on them should consider repairing the damage themselves or work with our local councillor to find and pay a contractor to do the work. It’s not always simply a case of re-grassing. We should all do our bit to make our village as attractive and as cared-for as it can be. This includes also not dropping litter – particularly when there’s a bin nearby – or failing to pick up our dogs’ mess. A concerned resident

I look forward to welcoming everyone down to the new Ratby Sports Bar on launch night 12th April and can’t wait to get started on what are going to be exciting times at the Ratby Sports Club! Please follow us on social media, facebook, twitter and Instagram...our facebook followers has just gone through the 800 people mark which is no mean achievement and enables us to reach so many more people. USE IT DON’T LOSE IT!

Regards, Garry
