HGV'S in Ratby Despite numerous requests to haulier companies not to allow their drivers to break the 7.5 tonne weight restriction along Main St, more and more lorries are coming through the village to access the former Desford Tubes site. To that end, we have repeatedly asked the police to come to Ratby to monitor this and to issue tickets to drivers who are blatantly ignoring the signs, putting road users and pedestrians at risk especially during school terms. So far, this request has gone unheeded but we will continue to ask for help to keep the village safe.

About 100 children attended and experienced amenities such as reading, face painting, bouncy castles, a sand pit and even Punch & Judy. Thank yo to the staff at HBBC for coming to the village and I know the children enjoyed it immensely.

Rupert Mathews MEP has launched a campaign to highlight existing War Memorials in the East Midlands and to try and get funding to repair long forgotten ones. Chris & Ozzy had no hesitation in putting forward our very own Angel as it is quite unique. Not only was it unveiled by Earl Marshall Haig on November 11th 1920 but also bears the name of a hero of the village who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Helmand Province , Afghanistan in 2007 along with fallen service personnel from both world wars. Rupert met with us on the 23rd July along with parish Councillors and a minutes silence was observed after the names were read out. A booklet about our Angel has been produced and you can obtain a copy from the library. Lest we forget. Thank you to all residents and please know we are only a phone call away Best Regards

KIRBY MUXLOE FREE CHURCH HOLIDAY AT HOME 2018
Sunday Lunch Club - Ratby Parish Church
'Carry on Cruising.'
The Lunch club was set up 7 years ago to provide Sunday lunch for senior citizens, disable people or those living alone .
From 3rd to 5th July up to 34 guests gathered at Kirby Muxloe Free Church for this year's 'Holiday at Home' event, based on a 'Carry on Cruising' theme. For 2 days we were, with the 20+ helpers, based at the church, with games, movement, crafts, and other activities in the mornings, and then, after a catered lunch from the valiant kitchen crew, were entertained 'On Board', in the afternoons. The Kirby Primary School choir, then the Bold Eukelele Band, came in on Tuesday, and on Thursday our friend David led well-known sing-along songs. On the Wednesday we had a coach excursion to Rutland Water, and enjoyed in idyllic conditions a private charter of the Rutland Belle, followed by a picnic lunch and relaxation time.
Reports are that a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all. Roll on 2019!
Watercolour Classes WATERCOLOUR classes with Peter Singleton start again in Kirby Muxloe Village Hall on Monday Mornings10-12 or Monday Afternoons 1-3. from September 24th 2018. All abilities and new members welcome! £85 for ten weeks. Please call Peter on 07980 525871.
GLENFIELD LADIES CO-OPERATIVE CHOIR OPEN EVENING We are a group of ladies who love to sing a wide variety of music, and meet regularly on Monday evenings. If you enjoy singing, come along and sing with us - we would love to see you! The details of the Open Evening are as follows: Monday 3rd September, 7:15-9:15pm Glenfield Methodist Church, Station Road, Glenfield, Leicester LE3 8BT For more information, please contact Becky Wales on 07857 644704 or glenfieldchoir@outlook.com
Sunday lunch has traditionally been a family occasion but it can be a very lonely time for some people. We thought it would be an opportunity for us as a church to offer a hand of friendship to elderly or disabled people and also to those people who live alone, by inviting them to join us on the last Sunday of each month. This takes the form of preparing and serving a three course meal, which not surprisingly is always well received. For those people who need transport we have a small band of volunteer drivers who willingly give their time to pick them up. We are never short of helpers for these meals, to both help prepare the food as well as to serve the tables and act as hosts to a group of our guests. We do not have a formal charge for a meal, however donations are welcome towards the provision of food for the next one. If you would like to attend or know someone who would benefit from attending please contact Joan Hawkins (Parish Pastoral Assistant) tel:2395826

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com
The County Councils Discussion on a Unitary Authority
residents that I represent. I appreciate others may not want a debate and stay as the status quo. However that is not an option in the current financial climate and cuts to Councils budgets it may well be that nothing happens, but that should not stop Councils looking at other options.
Nick Rushton the leader of the County Council said I have decided to start a debate about how best to deliver local government services in Leicestershire.
Complaints Re Dog Fouling Fields of Sacheverell Way and on the Ivanhoe Trail.
He said we now need to spend time exploring and working up more detailed options for the structure of local government in Leicestershire, drawing on research and the experiences of other councils. Seeking the views of residents, district councils, MPs, businesses, universities and others is key and I look forward to a constructive and informed debate.

Can you help the police and the Community Damage caused to Groby Scout Hut Quarry Park Groby. E
However the idea, which would save the taxpayer £30 million a year in the long run and could open the door to closer collaboration with other East Midlands councils, has been met with a mixture of hostility, curiosity and indifference by county politicians.
I fully support the debate and want to look at all possible alternatives. I want to ensure that we deliver the best possible services for the
I would also recommend that you check the email address for the sender it will be nothing like Amazon.
I have received several complaints concerning dog fouling on the footpath leading across the field from Ratby to Sacheverell Way and also along the Ivanhoe Trail. I have walked both paths with my dog and must say there has been a lot of dog fouling where owners have not picked up. I would appeal to the small minority of irresponsible dog owners who do not currently pick up and bag their own dogs mess, to think of others and change their attitude. It is not all right to let your dog foul in the field or on the verges of the Ivanhoe trail. These walks are extremely popular and are well used by children and the community. You can place your bags in any Hinckley and Bosworth bin on the lamp posts or in the red dog bins. Thank you.
It’s important we consider sensible options to get a better deal for our tax payers and those who rely on public services. One, 21st century council would reduce duplication of services, save at least £30m each year and improve services. Working with parishes and creating town councils in places like Loughborough and Coalville would also enable us to build stronger links with communities - giving residents a greater say in local services. Other unitary councils are already experiencing these benefits.
Councillor Rushton went on to say after their July Cabinet meeting: “My cabinet has formally agreed to develop proposals for a unitary structure of local government in Leicestershire. It has not specified any particular proposal, although I have expressed my preference for a single unitary council with delegation to town and parish councils. There will be outline proposals for the district councils to consider later in the year, when I will be happy to engage with them and other interested parties. That is the purpose of the timetable. The county council will certainly look at any proposals the districts may put forward but their approach of seemingly ruling nothing out suggests that will be some time away. I believe it is best to have some actual proposals on the table so we can begin a necessary public debate soon.”

Burning calories as you garden THE AVERAGE British gardener burns 51,428 calories a year in their garden, and mowing the lawn is one of the highest ways of using energy – about 600 calories a month. Mowing the grass takes 5.7 calories per metre. Weeding takes 4.5 calories, as does potting plants. Digging burns 5 calories per metre, while raking uses only 3.8 calories a metre. Gardening has long been known to be extremely good for you – giving you a chance to be outside, time to think, and beneficial exercise – all at the same time.

Popular money course to run again Popular money course to run again as people say they need tactics to cope with the age of austerity.
Groby Wine Circle Groby Wine Circle is a very sociable group which usually meets on the third Monday of the month at Groby Community College. Speakers are invited to give talks on a variety of interesting topics after which there is a chance to catch up socially over a drink with cheese and French bread. Throughout the year we organise fun nights out such as skittles, quiz nights, group walks (weather permitting), meals out and visits, etc.
Tuesdays 4th/11th/18 September 2018 at 7.30pm As part of our local Churches Together group Kirby Muxloe Free Church has partnered with Christians Against Poverty to offer CAP Money courses in our community. The service is completely free. The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. It is a simple, yet highly effective money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that really works. This course will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can save, budget, spend, give and avoid money problems. Enjoy a welcome in the Living Room at Kirby Muxloe Free Church where there is free off-road parking at the rear of the church building. Each course has three sessions of about 2 hours including a refreshment break. The format is informal with short video clips, discussion, money saving tips and some practical problem solving. By attending this course you will be provided with online tool to use during and after the course as well as course material to refer to, to use and to take away. To find out more you can visit www.capmoney.org.uk where all the available cap money UK courses can be found, and you can book directly online to the course of your choice or you can also request an online booking link from kirbycapmoney@gmail.com for your local course while places are available or call the church office on 0116 239 3173 for more information.
The Churches Together CAP Team
Our summer outing in June was to the Langton Brewery at Thorpe Langton. We were treated, not only to sample some of the local brews, but to an informative talk about how the brewery came in to being, its expansion to meet demand and the methods by which the brewing process takes place. Generally, not unlike wine making but a bit quicker. It was an excellent evening. The tasting was very much enjoyed by everyone who attended and we finished off with a ploughman’s supper at the brewery. Thinking past the heat wave and looking forward to our new season, which starts in September, we already have some excellent talks arranged as below: • Monday 17th September – “The Inverted Spinning Jennyâ€? by Derek Holloway • Monday 22nd October – “Bits and Bobsâ€?. Bob Neil returns with every day objects from the past to look at. • Monday 19th November – “Turkey (the feathered kind)â€? by Ian Rogerson. • Wednesday 12th December – Dare we mention it at this time – our Christmas Dinner We have a book sales table at each meeting where books can be purchased for a donation. Read all about the fallen in WW1, the work of the Air Raid Protection Wardens in WW2, the fundraising and rebuilding of the Free Church after the bombing of 1940 and finally – more tales from village folk long ago. PLEASE NOTE: our next meeting will be on Tuesday September 18th when the subject will be “Significant and Unusualâ€? – an Iron Age Feasting Site at Kirby Muxloe. Speaker: John Thomas. Castle Farm and Farm House / Wathes family The first known record of Castle Farm is in the probate papers of Thomas Penfold, a tenant farmer, who died in 1663. At the time, the farm comprised 330 acres and was owned by William Woolaston of Shenton. In his probate papers, Thomas, left an estate which included 500 sheep, 72 cattle, 3 mares, 3 foals and 2 fillies, plus a large amount of wool. It is thought that the next tenant farmer was Samuel Foreman. By 1778, Clement Winstanley had purchased the Castle estate, which would have included Kirby Castle, the Castle Farm House and farm, together with 800 acres. The cost was ÂŁ18,000. Then followed a number of tenant farmers, including Wilkinson, Hooke, Oldacres, Underwood and Freckleton. In 1859, several farm cottages (nos. 77-83 Main Street) were built for ÂŁ233 each. These were used to house the Castle Farm workers, who lived rent free in return for Sunday work. Although the original farm house dates back to medieval times, it is thought that it was rebuilt in the 17th century. It is difficult to say how much of the original building remains today. It is known that during the 18th century, when one of the towers at the castle was demolished, bricks were salvaged and used for repairs at Castle Farm House.
time it is thought that the Winstanley’s still owned the Castle Farm. Enter the Wathes family. The family had been involved in farming for many generations and can be traced back to 1816, when John Wilson Wathes was farming at Ratcliffe Culey on the Leicestershire-Warwickshire border. Fast forward to 1881, when we find Richard Henry Wathes, born in 1874, living at Oaks Farm, Kirby Muxloe, with his his 4 siblings and father, Richard, a widower. The Wathes family purchased Castle Farm, together with 172 acres in 1906. According to Kelly’s Trade directory of 1922, Richard Henry Wathes was farming at Castle Farm and listed as a “hay farmer. Ten years later, he was listed not only as a hay farmer but also “cheese factor. When talking to some of the older residents of the village who, as children, used to play in the loft of the barn, a few remember the pungent smell of ripening Leicester cheeses. As other childhood memories come to light, one remembers sitting on an empty hay wagon, usually led by Mr Clamp with a shire horse. After spending a carefree day in the fields, the children sat high up, on top of the hay, and rode all the way back to Castle farm (what would Health and Safty say about that !). In the newly released 1939 census, we see the farm cottages occupied by the families of George Clamp (farm foreman), Lois Barfield, Cecil Dunsmore, George Pemberton, John Woodward and Thomas Clamp. Most of the men are working on the farm as labourers or cowmen and many of the women are carrying out “unpaid domestic duties.
By 1911, Kirby Muxloe Castle was in a sad state of repair and the Winstanley family decided to pass it on to the Ministry of Works, who undertook extensive renovation work. At this

Richard died in 1948, leaving his wife Gertrude and son Richard Charles. Richard Charles was succeeded by his son David Wathes, who is the present owner of Castle Farm. By 1975, the decision had been made to sell the old farm house. A large scale alteration and renovation took place in order to turn the farm house into a restaurant. As a grade II listed building, many of the original features remain, especially inside. There are two large black slate flagstones, both of which are fluted with a cross set with two concentric circles. Local lore accounts that pigs to be slaughtered were hung from hooks above the flagstones. Over the years there have been many rumours of secret passages from the farm house to the Old White House, the Castle and even to Bradgate Park! During the renovations, the builders moved two large, thick pieces of slate, thought to be cheese presses. They uncovered what appeared to be the beginning of a tunnel, however all that seemed to be there were lots of frogs which jumped out of their hole into the building. It is not known if anyone tried to follow the tunnel or if indeed there was a tunnel. At best, it possibly went as far as the Castle. Perhaps the story that William Lord Hastings used a tunnel to visit his favourite, Jane Shore, was true after all! What do you think?

Ratby Library with Crow Pie Cafe
Condolences - We send our condolences to family and friends of Chris Talbot and Kim Pye who both passed away recently. Chris was a member of the Committee that negotiated the Community Library and Kim was one of the original volunteers. They both played a significant part in the libraries development and will be sadly missed. Chris’s contribution was achieving grant aid for the Café from the Cooperative Society and Kim took a lead in the running of the library. The Ratby Library – Reference material - There are well stocked shelves of reference material situated by the Customer’s Computers. These include, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council minutes and policy documents. There are also historical booklets about Ratby and the surrounding area and a noticeboard is dedicated to Ratby Local Hisory Group. Ratby Local History Group - The 2 monthly meetings have been suspended, but a meeting will be held later the year for the AGM and with a speaker. The Ratby History publications are available and reductions in costs have been made. They make very good Birthday or Christmas presents for anyone interested in the bygon days of Ratby and the cost of the publications have recently been reduced. Keep and eye on the noticeboard for future information. No.1 £5.00 No. 2 £6.00 No. 3 £3.00 (includes walks around Ratby, with historical notes) No. 4 £6.00 No. 5 £6.00
Crow Pie Café - We have a range of Icecreams and lollies at a variety of prices. And cans of drinks at 70p each, in the fridge to cool you down when the hot weather returns or at any other time of course. Tea and coffee is still available at 80p for tea and £1 a cup for coffee, with specialist coffees at £1.30 a cup. Mammoth Book Sale - We have been so successful in receiving donations of books that there will be a mammoth book sale on, Sat August 11th from 1030am to 1230pm. All novels will be 3 for£1.00. We will also make some games available for children (and adults to play). Quiz Evening - The next Quiz will be on Friday 17th August at 7.30. Stephen Roche continues to tantalise us with a wide selection of questions. The winners of the July Quiz received 2 bottles of wine. Don’t forget that some people bring their own Alcohol to drink but the Café is open for those who want tea, coffee or soft drinks. Book Club - The next meeting is at 6.30 pm on 21st August and the book chosen for this month is ‘Too Good to be True’ by Ann Cleeves. Wendy Deeping is your host and can be contacted on 0116 2390 227. Wriggly Readers - The next meetings will be on the 9th and 23rd August. Several mums continue to provide this free opportunity to bring babies and pre-school children to an hour of active fun, singing nursery rhymes and drawing. There is a wide age range attending with sufficient help to separate ages if required.
No charge is made for attendance but purchases from the Café are appreciated. Volunteers- We have recently recruited two new volunteers which is most encouraging. Part of the duties is to keep the library clean, but this only allows for day to day cleaning. What is required is an out of hours cleaner one day a week for a more thorough clean. Obviously, a volunteer would be our preferred option but we will consider 2 hours at Minimum wage plus for a self-employed person. More Volunteers are still required, and the shifts are 10.00am to 01.15pm and 01.15 (6.30pm on Wednesdays) and 10.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays.

Desford Lawn Tennis Club will see that their tennis courts have been given a makeover. Two courts have been cleaned and resurfaced using a sand-based acrylic binder and then painted an attractive purple and green. The binder will add 3 to 5 years of extra life to the tarmac and the sand filler has improved the surface grip. This makeover has been undertaken thanks to a grant from the Mick George Community Fund who have awarded £5,000 towards the project.

Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hi Everyone, I hope that everyone is enjoying the holiday season and what can only be described as sweltering conditions, we shouldn’t moan though as British weather has a habit of coming back to bite us on the bottom, having said that we did have an extremely wet winter so lets make the most of it. So what’s been happening down at the club since the last edition of the Local? We have had a really busy month what with the world cup and England doing better than was expected and we also hosted the all new Crow Pie Festival, it was such a fantastic turnout and it seemed that the whole village turned out to show there support, the weather was fantastic and there were so many families enjoying the atmosphere it was really very pleasing, I would like to thank Atul, Parish and County Council, Ratby WI, Ratby Chapel and the Ratby Church for all their hard work in making the day possible, for a first attempt it was very good and we can only learn by the experience to make things even bigger and better next year. On the sporting front both Ratby Town cricket 1st and 2nd teams have had mixed results but both teams continue to show excellent determination and commitment and are a credit to our club. The junior All Star cricket continues to grow in numbers and if anyone is interested please do not hesitate in contacting me. On the football front Ratby Panthers senior team have begun their pre-season in resounding fashion with 2 thumping victories in their first 2 pre-season friendlies. Further work has been done to the football facilities with more new signs and yet more work done on the surrounding grounds including visiting the drainage which hopefully will sort any issues there were with the pitch. The junior section are still on their break but will be back training within the next few weeks, be great to see them back and starting the new junior dynasty that is the Ratby Panthers.....the futures bright the futures purple! I am delighted to announce that the County Hall senior league team will be using our facilities from the start of the season and if our partnership is a successful one hope to become a Ratby Panthers team next season, this is fantastic news to be getting such high standard football back at the club and the possibility of having Ratby back playing at such a high level of football again. The Ratby Sports Pool team are performing well and everyone is getting involved, by the looks of things we will be in a position to have 2 teams next season which is brilliant news and can only be good for the club. We want the very best facilities for our boys and girls that play sports at the Ratby Sports Club so if you would like to put some money in to grass roots sport in your community please get in touch with me regarding sponsorship, if you would like to purchase advertising space on the senior football pitch, sponsor a junior football team, purchase advertising space on the cricket pitch or generally sponsor the club please contact me it would be truly appreciated and you know that apart from getting great exposure you will also be helping grass roots sport in the community. One thing we have got now is a fantastic following on social media, we have 735 followers alone on Facebook compared to just over 400 12 months ago, this media can give us great exposure and be able to send our message across to many people whether it’s a function or event or even giving people exposure we have got a really big audience and you could bare this in mind if you are thinking of sponsoring us. We are still hoping to attract new sports to our club inpaticular a running club and cycling club, if you or you know someone that might be interested in using us as a base please let me know. Lets hope for the continued nice weather with the very occasional shower to keep our gardens green and I look forward to seeing you soon, if anyone is interested in booking us for an event be it a birthday, anniversary, retirement party or wake please contact me for availability, our diary is filling up and people are already booking us for later in the year so don’t wait and be disappointed. Remember USE IT DON’T LOSE IT!

There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s with the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Jim Pollock participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part acappella harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn specially-commissioned songs. For men and women who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment. The course will run from 7-30pm to 10pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials Contact: P.J.Hunt Secretary 0116 2675 339 - Email: jansbolt@btinternet.com www.heartofenglandchorus.co.uk - twitter:@HoEChorus - FB: HoEChorus

There should Improvements to the Squash be a will, and Club at Sport in Desford there is a way! For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will. To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times.
of the best bargains in Leicestershire!
Take a look at some of the pictures of this new look club.
The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or www.ageuk.org.uk/leics Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Tony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.” “Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”
Newbold Verdon Jazz Club
The audience at Newbold Verdon Jazz Club had a great night listening to Matt Palmer’s Eagle Jazz Band on 6th July. This band of fi rst class musicians kept us entertained from start to fi nish with lots of classic trad jazz tunes, starting with a rousing version of June Nights and fi nishing with the popular Tiger Rag. It was lovely to see some new faces in the audience; we hope they will continue to come. Do come along to Newbold Verdon Social Club on the fi rst Friday of each month to enjoy a great evening of Jazz. Doors open at 7pm and the music is from 8 - 10.30pm, admission £9. HEALTHMATTERS ASTHMA
There are different triggers for Asthma. A trigger is anything that irritates the airways and causes the symptoms of asthma. Everyone's asthma is different and you can have more than one trigger. Common triggers include colds or flu, tobacco smoke, exercise and allergies to things like pollen, furry or feathery animals or house-dust mites.
Asthma is a very common disease that affects many people. The UK is known to have one of the highest rates of asthma in the world. It is estimated by the charity 'Asthma UK' that there are 5.4 million people in the UK currently receiving treatment for the condition. Asthma is a condition that affects the airways - the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When a person with asthma comes into contact with an asthma trigger, the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten and the airways become narrow. The lining of the airways becomes red and swollen and often sticky mucus or phlegm is produced. All these reactions cause the airways to become narrow and irritated - leading to the symptoms of asthma.
Attacks can be minimised by avoiding known triggers as much as possible and by leading a generally healthy lifestyle, including fresh foods and exercise.
The common symptoms of asthma are: • Coughing
There is no cure for asthma, but the disease can be managed. Medication is available to prevent attacks and relieve the symptoms.
• Wheezing or a whistling noise in the chest • Shortness of breath • Tightness in the chest
Medication is broadly separated into 2 types.
For anyone who has never had an asthma attack it is very hard to understand what it feels like. It is described to be like breathing through a straw whilst holding your nose closed. The sensations of breathing in and the chest pain that develops is how asthmatics feel during an attack.
1. Relievers: - These are used when an asthma attack occurs and are for short term temporary relief as and when required. 2. Preventers: - These are used to prevent attacks and are taken daily on a regular basis. If you have asthma and are using more than 6 asthma reliever pumps in a 6-month period without a preventer, then please call the pharmacy or alternatively make an appointment with the asthma nurse for a review.
Asthma can develop at any age. It is difficult to know what causes asthma, but so far it is known that: • If one or both of your parents have asthma you are more likely to have it • Many aspects of modern lifestyles such as changes in housing and diet and a more hygienic environment - may have added to the rise in asthma
If you would like to know about anything mentioned above, please pop in to the Village Pharmacy Kirby Muxloe or call us on 01162387353.
