Planning Application 19/00680/OUT This application which is an Outline Application by Charterhouse Land Agency seeks permission to build 175 dwellings on land to the rear of Markfield Rd in Ratby currently used and mostly owned by the Oakland School of Riding. This application will consist of 105 privately owned dwellings that breaks down into 31 x 2 bed houses, 36 x 3 bed houses and 38 x 4 bed houses. The affordable allocation would be 10 x 1 bed houses , 55 x 2 bed houses and 5 x 3 bed houses. The entrance and exit for vehicles is proposed to be Markfield Rd between 76 and 82 where the old red telephone box once stood. As the consultation period was extended at our request, no date has been set to take this to Committee and further information has been requested by LCC Highways together with an Ecology report. Residents can send comments to the Planning Dept at HBBC using the ref number at the top of the page.

Public Meeting A Public Meeting has been set to discuss this application with local residents. This meeting has been called by the Ratby Parish Council and will take place at the Ratby Methodist Chapel on 3rd September 2019 at 7.45pm for an 8pm start. Ozzy will be chairing the meeting. Chris will be at the meeting but as he is the lead member for his group and sits on the Planning Committee, he will listen to residents views only so later on , he can properly represent those views and more importantly , vote on the application.

Housing Repairs on Social Media. Residents may well have seen many different companies advertising on Social Media claiming to be able to get compensation for tenants of Local Councils , Housing Associations and the Private Rental Sector. These companies seek to exploit vulnerable tenants who are unsure where to ask for help regarding repairs. Our advice is not to engage with these companies but to seek advice from your Local Authority or contact your Borough or District Councillors who can intervene on your behalf. Best Regards

Chris & Ozzy.

Holiday at Home at Ratby Parish Church The holiday at home scheme provides fun and activity for older people within our locality It was launched on Friday 12th July in church with a film show in which the great old classic "Genevieve was shown. During the film we served ice creams and after the film all were treated to a delicious afternoon tea. We had 47 guests on the day who all had a thoroughly great time. On the Monday and Friday of the following week we arranged a programme of activities to suit most needs and for those who just wanted to take it easy they were able to sit and read newspapers do a crossword, jigsaws or play table top skittles. All the ladies were treated to a manicure and nails painted if they wished which they enjoyed very much and on both days they had the opportunity to do chair exercises with the help of a very experienced trainer. Needless to say there was plenty of food and refreshments for all. On the Wednesday 48 people had a wonderful day at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire. The weather was beautiful and the day finished with a wonderful cream tea for everyone . Those scones were something else! Without exception everyone had a great day, we even managed a game of bingo on the bus! On Sunday 21st July we hosted our monthly lunch club and were very pleased to welcome some new people who had participated in the weeks activities During that week we provided food and refreshments for a large number and although we fun raise all year to pay for this week, some of this would not have been possible without the fabulous support of the Co-operative Society. We are very grateful to them and hope they will continue to support us in future years. Thank you also to my small but wonderful band of helpers Joan Hawkins- Pastoral Assistant Ratby Parish Church

Leicester Sea Cadets offering more and more to the young people of Leicester OVER THE last few months Leicester Sea Cadets has successfully run a new national youth project through Youth United Foundation (YUF) by opening its doors to nine years olds for the first time ever. This means that an extra 30 local children have been able to take advantage of adventures and activities outdoors. The group also welcomes parents and other adults in the community to help out and all gain further qualifications together, such as Duke of Edinburgh Award, Royal Yachting Association qualifications, BTECs, and British Canoeing Awards. Richard de la Mare, Eastern Area Officer for Leicester Sea Cadets said: “We are absolutely delighted that with the support of the Youth United Foundation we have been able to extend the access of this project in Leicester. This important project has enabled more young people to be able to experience the adventures and activities outdoors, helping to equip them with the resilience, self-belief and social confidence needed to thrive in modern day life. In October Leicester Sea Cadets will be running the National Citizen Service (NCS) Programme that welcomes 16- 17 year olds to join a project run in half term to feel challenged and engaged whilst taking part in the four-phase programme. Check Leicester Sea Cadets out on Facebook - www.facebook.com/seacadetsleicesteruk, or visit them at 140 Ross Walk, Leicester LE4 5HH on a Tuesday or Thursday or call them on: 0116 266 2865. People are welcome to drop in to find out about the opportunities available with Sea Cadets, or contact Jemma Martin (Eastern Area Development Worker) jmartin@ms-sc.org or 07972 152889.

Gullet Lane

Gullet Lane is one of the oldest roads in Kirby Muxloe. It was originally named Le Golet, a word possibly derived from the old French word “Goulet” meaning throat or gulley. The Golet wood appears to have been approximately less than half a square mile in size. In the eighteenth century, before the Parish boundary was changed, part of Gullet Lane was actually to be found in Leicester Forest, not Kirby Muxloe, as it is nowadays. The hedges at the rear of the gardens of the unadopted part of the Lane still denote the Parish boundary. Although the ground is predominately clay, the land was originally peppered with pockets of sand. It is documented that during the building of K.M. Castle in the 1480’s, records show that most of the sand used in the works came from Le Golet. During the building of the castle towers in 1482, many loads of sand were extracted from the area. It was also a source of brushwood for the kilns used in brick making for the castle, and also provided many of the “brambles and thorns” for making a hedgerow around the castle site. In later years, more sand became evident, as when the railway cuttings were made in around 1848, the work was hampered by running sand, which was just beyond the bridge looking towards Desford. The first known mention of Gullet Lane in records was in 1364, when ownership of a wood named Le Golet passed from Sir Robert de Herle to Sir Ralph Hastings of Wistow. The wood was most likely to have originally been accessed by foot on a path, but by 1779, this had been realigned and widened and also slightly changed its position, presumably to allow better access to the farm at the end, which was named Brickman Hill. The farm was known as Bryhtmondeshille, back in 1300, and comes to light in 1713, when it was farmed by William Mitchell. Looking at ancient maps, the original Brickman Hill farm possibly appears to be further out into the fields, way past the present Elms Farm, and there are certainly

ruins of farm buildings in the field. However, when fields were given names, Brickman Hill was applied to a large area of land from the farm building (as in the farm cottages that still exist) out into the fields. The farm retained its original name until around 1885, when, although owned by the same farmer, Gilbert Mee, the name was changed to Elms Farm. At the time, Gilbert Mee owned much of the land bordering Gullet Lane, and some of the oldest houses are recorded, as being part of “The Elms Estate”. Some of these earliest houses built on the unadopted part of the Lane are The Lindens (1906), and The Elms, built in 1912. Hedgerows (1903), formerly known as The Cottage was not part of the estate. The Homestead, the house nearest to the farm, appears to have been the oldest house on the Lane, built around 1902. This house, with its proximity to the farm, was at times used as the farmhouse for Elms Farm. This was certainly true when the farm was owned by Mr Bolton of Chilpruf (manufacturers), since the farm was for a time known as “Chilpruf Farm”. During WWII, the green corrugated shed on the right, just inside the farm gates, was known as the “jam factory”. Fruit was collected from the extensive gardens of The Homestead and bottled or canned as part of the war effort. The two cottages at the entrance to the farm are certainly very old and predate all the other buildings on the road. These two cottages are thought to have been, at one time, the original Brickman Hill farmhouse. Windyridge, the bungalow to the right of the farm buildings, was built in the 1920’s and occupied by the late Bill Hobill, owner of Elms Farm and Hobill’s Dairy. Bill was a great character and always had a welcome smile and many stories to tell. He is greatly missed.

gardens. The bridge over the railway is called Mees Bridge and was constructed in 1848, with the advent of the railway. Although carrying as many as 28,278 passengers in 1907, the need for the rail service diminished over time, and the railway ceased to function as a passenger line in 1964. The railway, which is now single track, is only used for the occasional freight train and steam train days. Mees bridge has stood a large increase in traffic since it was constructed, with vehicles from Gullet Lane and Links Road crossing it constantly. Farm traffic has diminished over the years and Elms Farm although still owned by the Hobill family, no longer supplies milk to the large tankers which once passed over the road. Gullet Lane is still a very popular road for walkers and horse riders, especially on a Sunday afternoon. Groups of hikers often trudge across the muddy field from Desford Road, passing between two of the older houses and then up to Elms Farm and through the fields. One track follows the sign post to Leicester Lane, Desford, whilst another passes up the hill, through the first field after the farm, then turns left. By continuing to follow the footpath sign, the track skirts along the edge of the golf course, follows the path at the rear of the Links Road houses, and comes out near to the bridge. A great countryside walk, although stout shoes are required as the land is uneven. Happy walking!! Many thanks to the people on Gullet Lane for information received.

The oldest house on the adopted part of the Lane is number 11, named at the time “Clydesdale” and built in 1905. This was followed by number 4, “The Croft”, built in 1912, and no. 2, “Headlands”, built in 1913. Since then, building work has continued on the Lane, with the adopted part now having houses dating up to 2010. The latest houses on Abbots Close were built after the demolition of two fine Arts and Crafts houses that were built in the 1920’s. There was much opposition to this work at the time, but as a sign of the times, houses with very large gardens are so often are demolished, to be replaced by several Delivering milk for Hobill's Dairy. Planning Application 19 / 00680 / OUT Provision of 175 Homes between Markfield Road & M1 Motorway Charterhouse Strategic Land held its first, and only, consultation with Ratby villagers on 10th April in our library, during which nearly 300 residents viewed their displays relating to a planned application to build 175 homes on the north side of the village between Markfield Road and the M1 motorway. The images below show the plan and aerial view.

The Summer Visitor For some days now, and more to follow We’ve been persuaded to just borrow A dog who usually lives elsewhere Who’s family’s gone abroad (by air) Nice little chap, quite small and curly And though he does get up quite early He’s full of fun, prepared for play At any hour of night or day Although he knows what orders are It seems he does prefer by far To make his own preferred walk choices Despite the pleading human voices So in the field, or on the park Without a whimper or a bark He drops the ball you’ve brought for play Turns round and runs the other way

;;;

;

The worst thing (happens quite a lot) Is that you reach a certain spot Where in the distance is the brook And suddenly you see him look

Charterhouse could have been left in no doubt that this was an unwanted and unsustainable addition to Ratby’s housing stock on the basis that our local school cannot accommodate the expected addition of 200-300 children such low cost housing might generate and the hundreds of additional vehicles and vehicular movements that would add even further congestion onto our roads, especially at peak times.

His ears prick up, he lifts his nose He gets into a racing pose Accelerates from nought to thirty Leaps in the brook (and gets quite dirty)

Quite rightly, villagers are disappointed that this land is owned by 3 local families ( Root, Smith and Brookes ) and they will know of the previous plan from Cawrey Homes for Markfield Road, was dismissed on similar plus additional grounds and that nothing has changed re our village’s infrastructure.

The thing is, when he does come back The one thing that he seems to lack Is any sense of guilt or shame At not responding to his name

There is a considerable groundswell of opinion that this application should be dismissed and multiple groups are likely to make their voices heard and their views known using every strand of media ( social, radio and television ) to make it clear to the landowners, agent and developer that this housing development is both unnecessary, using the National Planning Policy Framework and unwanted, owing to its negative impact on our village.

In fact the opposite is true He seems so pleased to just see you He jumps and barks, soon makes amends And off for home we set, best friends

To compound matters, landowners are also seeking to apparently piggy back on the more substantial application via 19 / 00785 / OUT covering 4 houses behind the riding school, possibly with vehicular access via Groby Road. This appears to be a regurgitation of earlier plans 15 / 01272 / OUT and 17 / 00123 / OUT. Both the earlier applications were dismissed, as should this latest reincarnation. County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Street Lighting Sacheverell way Groby On the 18th June 2019 I met with Cllr Blake Pain the Executive member of Highways. I handed Blake a petition signed by 824 residents and also 36 signed reply slips of support requesting the replacement of the street lighting along Sacheverell Way, Groby. I fought for these lights to be retained in 2013 as the Council was going to decommission them.

The footpath along Sacheverell Way is heavily used by both pedestrians and joggers and is also a main route to school for local children. The road is an extremely busy road with drivers often speeding resulting in my request for the mobile police speed van to monitor the speed along that section of road. I have been informed that there is a serious cabling fault which will require all the cabling to be replaced. The cabling replacement cost alone is £300,000 without adding the replacement lights. The department’s Street lighting annual budget for Leicestershire is £800,000. I am waiting for a report from the Director of Highways. I intend to have further discussions with both the Director of Highways and the Executive member as in my opinion street lighting along this section of road is a priority.

Draft Leicestershire Substance Misuse Strategy 2020-23 Alcohol and drug misuse impacts on people’s lives in many ways. Providing treatment and support to people with alcohol and/or drug problems can have a significant beneficial impact not just for the individual, but for their families and for their community. Preventing people from developing alcohol and drug problems and reducing dependence on alcohol and drugs not only improves an individual’s health and wellbeing but also reduces the burden on health and social care services and reduces crime and anti-social behaviour. To understand the size of the problem of alcohol and drug misuse in Leicestershire, a

Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) was completed in March 2019.

November where a decision will be made on how to proceed.

JSNA Substance Misuse in Adults report. JSNA Alcohol Misuse in Adults Report.

If you require clarification or assistance on any of the information provided above, please email phdrugsandalcohol@leics.gov.uk.

The reports above describe: • The health needs of the people of Leicestershire in relation to drug and/or alcohol misuse • The impact of drug and/or alcohol misuse • relevant policy and guidance relating to drug and/or alcohol misuse • Existing service provision across Leicestershire for drug and/or alcohol misuse The draft strategy The information from the JSNA identifies unmet needs in relation to drug and/or alcohol misuse and makes recommendations for change. These recommendations alongside engagement with service providers, public sector organisations and voluntary sector organisations have led to the development of a draft Leicestershire Substance Misuse Strategy. The draft strategy identifies five key priorities that support us in our goal of continuing to provide appropriate, accessible and equitable substance misuse services to our population. The priorities identified within the strategy, centre around the themes of: •

Prevention

Early identification

Treatment and recovery

Protection/harm reduction

Partnership working

Have your say We are seeking your views on the proposed priorities for Leicestershire and whether you have further comments and suggestions.

The County Councils Priorities Have your say We are asking residents, partner organisations, businesses and other interested parties to help us shape plans and prioritise future services. Read the information below and submit your views by 8 September 2019. Introduction to the consultation Increased demand for our services means we are under pressure to find more savings. Taking tough decisions and saving £200m since 2010 has helped us stay in a good position. But tight funding, combined with increasing demand for services, means the county council has to find another £75m in savings over the next four years. Growing need for social care and special educational needs and disability (SEND) support – plus inflation - is set to drive up costs by £94m over the next four years. We already have plans in place to make further savings. These include: • Recruiting more in-house foster carers to reduce expensive placements • Reducing adult social care costs by managing demand and reviewing contracts and personal budget allocations • Generating more income from property investment and commercial activity • Reducing back office costs through digital technology and simplifying processes Future challenges The council is facing challenges that will lead to further reductions in spending.

Please type in the below link or go to the Leicestershire County Councils Website and type in have your say and click on current consultation then on substance-misusestrategy https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-yoursay/current-consultations/draft-leicestershiresubstance-misuse-strategy-2020-23

600 Children in the Councils Care Set to Rise 13% each year

The consultation closes at midnight on 1 September 2019. Comments can be submitted by emailing phdrugsandalcohol@leics.gov.uk.

This means it's time to ask residents, partner organisations, businesses and others to help us shape plans and prioritise future services.

What happens next? When the consultation closes, we will analyse the feedback and review the proposals. The reviewed proposals and consultation findings will be presented to the council’s cabinet in

Demand for SEND Support set to rise 22% over the next 5 Years. Leicestershires Population set to grow by 107,000 between 2016 and 2041 driving the demand for services and the need for infrastucture such as road and schools.

KIRBY MUXLOE FUN DAY – SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER – AND LOST PROPERTY!

Not a lot to report this month – the lazy days of summer – well, apart from when it’s raining, of course. The Library has been quite quiet with everyone away on their holidays. If yours is yet to come, pop into the Library for a good-as-new paperback or two to take with you on the plane – only 50p each, and you go leave them behind at your holiday destination for others to read. Saves space and hassle!

NEW BOOKS - Our regular clients will be pleased to know that we have put aside £1,000 to purchase a good range of new books. We feel that our adult fiction section needs replenishing, particularly with good literary fiction. We hope to have these within the next few weeks, so if you feel that you have read most of the books in the Library, come and have a browse of the new stock. Our children’s section is already exceptionally well-stocked, so this set of purchases will focus on adults. SCHOOL READINESS DROP-IN - A reminder that the School Nurse Service will be visiting the Library on Tuesday 13th August from 2.00 – 4.00, so if you have a young child who will

14

be starting school this September, just drop-in for a chat about any worries you may have. Many of us still remember the ‘nit-nurses’ – this is a long way from that! Feel free to discuss any anxieties, from dentistry and diet, through to toilet training, independence and speech / language development.

N’UKES - We have 3 tickets left for the N’ukes Ukelele Gig on 6th September from cancellations, so if you would like to come, drop in to the Library. All quiz night tickets have now gone, but we do get occasional cancellations, so it’s always worth dropping in to ask – or ring us on0116 2387343 to check availability. SUMMER READING CHALLENGE - By no means too late to sign your child/children up for this. For children aged 4-12, this is a good way to get them interested in books and reading, with a treasure hunt and all sorts of rewards along the way – and a very splendid certificate and medal when 6 books have been read. If the children are getting a bit bored with the long summer holiday, this is a good way for them to fill their time constructively.

The Library will be contributing to the Fun Day on 7th September with a stall for selling books, DVDs and jigsaws. Since we opened, we have accumulated a strange collection of lost property, not very much of which has been reclaimed. Some items are very splendid (e.g. a pair of black leather gloves), some that you would expect (e.g. pencil cases and water bottles), and some that do rather puzzle us (e.g. a tiny denim skirt for a 3-4 year old and a very nice child’s sports top). If you have lost anything, drop in and have a look, otherwise we will sell items off at the Fun Day.

AND FINALLY.................

AUGUST COFFEE MORNING SATURDAY 24TH AUGUST 10.00 – 1.00 AT THE LIBRARY COFFEE, CAKES AND CHILDREN’S CRAFTS EATURING CATHERINE’S SPLENDED CARROT CAKE!

Ratby Primary School News.... THE PRODUCTION The Production was an amazing experience for all of the Year 6 pupils (the parents and teachers seemed to enjoy it too!) There were some fabulous acts with singing and dancing and we all loved taking part. To get our parts, we had to audition but Katy and Ethan were really confident so they got two of lead roles as Lilly and Josh, but like everything, they had to work hard for it. All the soloists had to audition separately to get their parts but it was a hard decision between all the singers. The production went really well and everyone seemed to love it (it was very funny). The parents especially liked Leo (Grandpa) and Sam (Chef Raymond Blah Blah). Everyone thought they were very funny and entertaining! Also, Anton Du Pantalon and Angelina Pasadoble gave an amazing dance lesson to the guests of Poplins Holiday Camp. It was a great way to finish Year 6 and it was a truly entertaining experience. We can’t wait for all the adventures we will have together in the future. By Holly ,Rosie and Stanley

Enterprise On the 10th June 2019, all of Year 6 were ready to start their Young Enterprise Challenge. They had £10 to invest in whatever they wanted (although some stalls went over the budget!) There was so much hard work put into Enterprise by all groups - including a lot of planning! There were products sold for £1 and that included: sweets, games, candy floss, milkshakes and brownies. All the children at Ratby were pleased with the stalls and happy with what was on offer. Sadly, the weather was not very good and was not on our side, but we still managed to sell plenty of items. We sold from the 10th June to the 15th June and during break time and after school. Overall, we made over £800 and it went towards the end of the year party for all of the year 6’s. We also plan to make a donation to the bereavement charity, The Laura Centre.

Red Ridge On the 17th June, Year 6 left Ratby Primary School to go on the adventure of a lifetime. 3 ½ hours later, we arrived at The Red Ridge Centre and saw lots and lots of sheep! Once we were settled, we started our first activities: amazing artificial caving and awesome archery and an interesting night walk (one group listened to sounds of sheep!) When we woke up the next day, we were ready to push the limits in climbing and in kayaking; we braced ourselves to get extremely wet. We were climbing cliff faces and also abseiling down them, climbing through dark, mysterious caves. After that, we orienteered across the centre. Next, we courageously canoed down the canal and completed the long, exhausting journey. We went on one last through a tiring hill walk. Finally, we went home after a tiring but fun week on a bus. What a fantastic trip!

Year 6 Science Day On Tuesday 18th June 2019, 8 students named Daisy, Andi, Chloe, Emily, Olivia, Sienna, Grace and Verity from Ratby Primary School went on a Science trip to Loughborough College & a Science Academy. At 9am, Mrs Thomas, took us in a taxi to Loughborough College to do a Science event (Whilst the rest of Year 6 were on their trip to Red Ridge). At Loughborough college, we learnt about DNA - to help us learn about it we made a model out of gummy bears! When we got home, we ate them! In addition, we extracted DNA from a strawberry. At the Science Academy, we set up our experiment that we had carried out in class the week before. It was about how different birds have adapted to have varying sized beaks. After we’d set it up, we looked around to see what everyone else had done. At 3pm, the parents came and looked round for 1 hour. All together, we had a great time! Thank Mrs Thomas for organising this great trip! Andi, Chloe J and Daisy

Edible Forest Festival Returns to Ratby Church Charnwood Forest Summer Fete

A feast of unique food and drink events from 7-15 September 2019

The annual Edible Forest Festival returns this September to celebrate the best in local food and drink at unique and iconic settings around the ancient woodland of Charnwood Forest. From 7-15 September 2019, there will be a range of tasty food and drink events including afternoon tea in the iconic Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, dining under the stars in one of our unique dining pods, Trappist Brewery Tours, Safari Supper around Charnwood’s finest eateries and another outstanding Secret Gourmet evening with Michelin star holder, Chef John Duffin. New events at this year’s Edible Forest Festival include a cider tasting night, cheese pairing and a vegan day. Additional new events will be announced shortly. People can sign up at www.edibleforest.co.uk to make sure that they get first in the queue when tickets go on sale.

We actually moved everything into the Church Rooms including the Anstey Royale Chalfont Dancers who were great bringing a joyful sound and sight to everyone gathered there as they enjoyed the stalls and the amazing array of food and refreshments.

The Edible Forest festival was created by Leicestershire Promotions and is supported by Charnwood Borough Council and Everards.

Over in the church lots of people enjoyed fascinating tours of both church and tower (including the chance to ring the bells) as well tea and coffee in the welcoming space of our beautiful church.

Bradgate Park calendar launch A 2020 calendar celebrating Bradgate Park has been officially launched by Bradgate Rotary. The event took place at the Stamford Arms in Groby on 10th July. Those attending the event included outgoing Bradgate Park Director, Peter Tyldesley; sponsors of the calendar; members of Bradgate Rotary; and members of LeicesterForest Photographic Society, who took the photographs for the calendar.

We still raised over £1000, which helps us to keep doing all we do as a church and to support our community We also took the opportunity to promote our giving campaign because as well as the work we do we need to raise over £51,000 to pay for the necessary repairs to maintain our heritage for generations to come. If you would like to know more about our campaign and would like to help you can contact our Rector(revdredbampton@outlook.com)or our church warden Jim Milner (jimmilner15@gmail.com) or phone (0116 2386334).

This is the fourth year that Bradgate Rotary has produced a calendar for the Park, sales of which raise vital funds for Bradgate Park Trust. The calendar depicts scenes from the Park - landscapes, events, wildlife and flora through the different seasons. The calendar is available to purchase from Bradgate Park for £5. A Bradgate Rotary spokesperson said: “We’d like to give a special thanks to members of Leicester Photographic Society who took such great photographs, and to Groby Allotment Society, who supplied recipes inspired by locally-grown produce which are included in the calendar.”

On the 6th July we held our summer fete and after a week of lovely weather, on the day of our Summer fete the rains came down and just for the day, as the clear weather returned the following days., but despite the weather it was a lovely day and enjoyed by everyone.

FREE 'LEARN TO SING in HARMONY' COURSE 2019

Newbold Verdon Jazz Club

Due to the overwhelming success of last September/October “Learn to sing in Harmony” course we are holding another course starting Monday 23rd September through October, so come on why not be part of 'Learn to Sing in Harmony'

Wow what a great night at Newbold Verdon Jazz Club. Mike Owen’s Scarlette’s Seranaders gave us an evening of jazz to be remembered. The line-up of six top musicians, Mike Owen, Sarah Spencer, Baby Jools and Jim Swinnerton, were joined by guests Rico Tomasso on trumpet and Spats Langham on banjo who all played their hearts out all evening. From favourites like ‘Dallas Blues’ and ‘Louisiana Fairytale’ to less well known numbers such as ‘Saloon ‘sung by Mike accompanied by Spats on banjo and a jazz version of the Tom Jones hit from 1964 ‘Chills and Fever’, not something we were expecting!

The free 'Learn to Sing in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS, aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men and women both young and older to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men and women who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s free! With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn the speciallycommissioned song. For men and women who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Altogether a fantastic night of jazz. Next month on September 6th we have the Pedigree Jazz Band who I’m sure will provide another good night of jazz.

The course will run from 7-30pm to 10pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials.

We would love to see you at Newbold Verdon Social Club, admission only £9 payable on the door with drinks and snacks at club prices. Doors open at 7.00pm with music from 8.00 - 10.30pm.

Robins & Rainbows, Local Charity Team to Complete a year of events! On the 20th July 2018, Kim Pye passed away after a hard fought battle with breast cancer. During her fight, Kim found a lot of support from a local Leicester charity called Together Against Cancer, based in Thurmaston.

Knowing how amazing Together Against Cancer was for Kim, it made it an easy decision for her family and friends to choose to support them in their quest to raise money in Kim’s memory.

Kim found visiting the centre a positive and uplifting experience, particularly when medical treatment was no longer an option and she enjoyed taking part in the nutrition workshops and meeting lots of wonderful people going through similar journeys, which provided Kim and her family with such valuable support.

With this in mind, Robins and Rainbows was formed and dedicated to a year of fundraising events to be able to give back to the charity that meant so much to Kim and her family.

Robins and Rainbows have been completing challenges and so far, have conquered Scafell Pike, a 26 mile walk around Rutland Water, a 21 mile walk through the Peak District (in continuous rain!) and the X Runner Water Wipeout.

The following events are also planned, Rutland Open Water Night Swim, 10K Rutland Night Run, Santa Run in December and a fashion show. September sees the team, hopefully, completing their biggest challenge yet, the Peak District Silver Challenge which covers 75KM in 24 hours, starting at 9pm . On the 4th August the 26 mile Dovedale Dipper will be completed and on the 27th August there is a curry night at Harrison Spice in Ratby, where tickets are just £15 for three courses. £5 from each ticket sold will go to the charity. So far, the team has raised £460.00 of the £3500.00 target. If you would like to donate and would like further information on the ticketed events, please go the their Just Giving Page www.justgiving.com/fundraising /robins-rainbows-challenges For more information on Together Against Cancer and the support they can provide, please visit www.togetheragainstcancer.org.uk

RESULTS OF RATBY’S ART COMPETITION The competition entitled “An Artists View of Late Victorian and Edwardian Ratby”, was sponsored by Michael Ball on behalf of The Ratby History Research Group. Seven images of Ratby were on display in Ratby Library for artists to choose from to submit their own interpretation of the scenes. Fourteen pictures were entered for judging, each of a high standard of work and with wide varieties in style. The winning picture of a scene of the ford crossing Burroughs Road, Ratby, was painted by John Perridge of Botcheston. Our congratulations go to John and all the other worthy entrants. Many thanks go to Ratby Library volunteers for their generous help with the competition, both before, and on the day. With many thanks, Jane

Rayne.

Ruffle comes home! An exciting invitation arrived in Ruffle’s kennel recently from the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire. Together with author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves, Ruffle will be appearing at the GCR’s Family Fun event at Rothley Station on August 24th, 25th and 26th. Visitors to the event can meet Ruffle and enjoy an interactive performance of some of his adventures brought to life with puppets and props including an incredible model train called ‘The Flying Terrier’! The Ruffle stories were inspired by Rachel’s love of Airedales combined with knowledge from her two children who have worked on the GCR. Readers of the books will recognise some of the storylines and illustrations if they have visited the GCR.

Rachel explained just how excited both she and Ruffle are to be visiting the places that inspired the series of adventures. ‘The events in the stories are believable because they have happened or readers can imagine them happening. Keen-eyed readers will spot that the little station where Eric the station master works could well be Rothley. There’s also an illustration of the stone bridge that carries the trains over the Swithland Reservoir. Ruffle and I are really looking forward to sharing his adventures in the place where they were imagined as happening – it’s as if Ruffle was coming home!’ The event will include activities and storytelling at stations along the GCR – fantastic fun whilst encouraging reading! Since self-publishing the first of her series of Ruffle stories just over 3 years ago, Rachel has sold over 9500 books. As an English and Drama teacher it was only natural that Rachel adapted some of the stories into assembly performances using puppets and props to promote reading, writing and a love of imagination. Over 100 primary schools have enjoyed sharing in Ruffle’s adventures so far.

Hi everyone I hope I find you all well, we are well in to the holiday season now and I would guess that most would have been on their holidays, if you have I hope you had a nice time and have recharged your batteries ready for the run up to autumn, if your yet to go away I hope you have a nice time. I missed the deadline for the last issue and therefore wasn’t a RSC update, what has been surprising is the amount of people that have actually asked where our article was and that they missed the read, it is really pleasing that there are actually people that do read my column and find it interesting, so for those 2 people fear not I’m back!! So what’s new at the club...we have been busy preparing the grounds for the coming football season which has meant a lot of hard work preparing the pitches by re seeding the goalmouths and tending to the area’s around the pitches, the weather has been ideal for growing grass which is great when you need new seed to take but it is also a pain in the backside trying to keep on top of everything else. The Ratby Panthers seniors have been very proactive in putting a lot of time and effort in and I would like to thank Andy Culver, Jack Foley and Dan Clarke for their continued support. We have got a girls/ladies football team coming to use our facilities next season AFC Leicester and they have been really helpful and have gone above and beyond to try and make the club not just somewhere they come to play there matches but make it there home, I am excited by them coming on board as it will introduce a lot more people to the club and will also bring in extra revenue. Over the last weeks we have hosted several parties from 18th, 21st, 40th, 50th and 60th what has been pleasing is the amount of children’s parties we have hosted, it’s been great seeing families down using our facilities and utilising the space we have, we had one family that came down and had a bbq and had organised a big game of rounders and had also hired a company that did messy play

for the younger members of the family, it really was a fantastic afternoon and really showcased what the club can offer anyone thinking about having a party at the club. Remember the club is FREE to hire if you are interested please contact me. On the 18th August we are holding a memorial cricket match in memory of Ed Lee which will be a played out between the 1st V 2nd team, there will be a lot of pride at stake but ultimately the day is meant to be fun. Also on the 18th August the Panthers seniors are having a football tournament over the other side of the brook and to make the day a total festival of sport Leicester City are playing away to Chelsea which is on tv kick off 4.30pm, there will be food stalls including hog roast and obviously the bar will be open for a few light refreshments, feel free to come down and enjoy the entertainment, lets hope for some decent weather! On the cricket front both 1st and 2nd team have been having mixed fortunes but this hasn’t helped with the holiday season and availability of players, lets put it this way I’ve had to get my whites out to help the second team, the last time they came out I don’t think Persil had been invented as they weren’t that white, if anyone is interested I was out for a duck but I blame the bat I had to borrow, it was far to springy and I was caught out by a worldy of a catch (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) It saddens me to hear the rumours that are circulating that the club is up for sale? I can assure you this isn’t the case, what I will say is that there are people in the community that would like to see the club closed and sold off for whatever but while I am involved in the club I will guarantee I will do all I can to make sure that nothing untoward happens, this club has had years of neglect and was run down on it’s knees, there had been years of mismanagement and people trying to make a quick buck off of the back of the place. The reputation the club had when the current management committee were put in place

CALLING ALL STALL HOLDERS… 26

was a little less than awful people had stopped coming to the club families weren’t using the place sport was playing second fiddle to a drug culture that to be fair is rife in modern day society but has no place in an environment that you want your kids to be in! What we have tried to achieve over the last 2 years is to write some wrongs find out what on earth happened in the past try and make the place look and feel better so people families wanted to come and enjoy a drink of an evening and feel comfortable in their surroundings. Don’t get me wrong I have made mistakes along the way and at times made poor decisions mostly down to inexperience but thinking I was doing right by the club. We are now in a position where we can put all of the cards on the table tell people what we have found out, where the club went wrong and why it’s in the mess it’s in and not as some up standing members of the community would have you believe the current managements fault! We are having a meeting on the 28th August from 8pm and EVERYONE and ANYONE are invited to attend it will be your opportunity to hear and see the facts on what’s been happening at the club over the last 15 or so years, I don’t think it appropriate to hang out the dirty washing on the pages of the Local magazine and to have people in one room that care or interested is far more appropriate. I hope you can attend. We are always looking for volunteers, people that want to get involved in the club and help in anyway shape or form however big or small, if you are interested please get in touch. We are always looking for new sports or new teams to come and join us, if you are a running club, cycling club or any kind of sport and you need a base a home or use of our facilities, we are an 18 acre site please contact me. The football season proper starts this weekend so please remember we have sky sports and BT Sports on our multi screen and surround sound system. I hope to see you soon, Use it Don’t Lose It!

Regards, Garry
