Kirby Muxloe Free Church are pleased to once again be hosting the Saltmine Theatre Company and this year their Christmas show is: Rapunzel She’s the queen of her castle, the mistress of mischief. With big hair and even bigger dreams, Rapunzel’s curls fizz like fireworks and her imagination roams wild and free. She invents the best games, paints the brightest pictures, jumps the highest, runs the fastest. But then - there isn't much competition when you're always on your own. Rapunzel stands out. Or she would, if anyone was there to see her. But she’s been told that, just like her hair, she needs to be tamed before she can get ahead. The outside world just isn’t ready for her yet. Meanwhile, across the city, all the young Prince wants is to be on his own. Overshadowed by his brother, he’s never fitted in and he knows he’ll never be the King everyone expects. On the evening of his coronation party he makes a run for it – straight to a lonely tower in the woods. Could this shy boy be the key to Rapunzel’s freedom? Or is the world too much of a scary place to be yourself? Let your hair down this Christmas and join Saltmine Theatre Company’s unexpectedly twisty tall tale as we unravel the knots of being different, being free – and being yourself. Come along and see the story of Rapunzel as you’ve never seen it before at: Kirby Muxloe Free Church (LE9 2AN) - on - Thursday 19th December 2019 at 6:30pm Tickets available from or by phoning 0116 239 3173. Ratby’s Miss Slinky loses an amazing 4 stone A dazzling slimmer is getting ready to shine this Christmas party season after achieving an amazing 4stone weight-loss. Cara Porter, who has lost 4stone was voted as the Ratby Slimming World group’s Miss Slinky 2019, after her fellow members were wowed by her achievements. Slimming World’s annual Miss Slinky competition recognise members who have transformed both inside and out by becoming healthier and happier, slimmer and more confident, and who look great in their Christmas party clothes. The national winners of both titles will each win a £3000 cash price. Cara Porter says she was thrilled to win her respective title. Cara Porter 26 who has dropped from a dress size 20 to a size 10 says: “I’ve been looking forward to Christmas this year knowing that I now have the confidence to wear outfits that I couldn’t or wouldn’t have last year. Now I’ve won the title of Miss Slinky I have even more to celebrate and I know this festive season will be extra special.” Cara began following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which encourages members to satisfy their appetite on healthy foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, fruit and veg and more. Slimmers are able to lose weight without ever going hungry and still enjoy treats without feeling deprived, so there’s no need to miss out on their festive favourites this Christmas. “When I joined the Slimming World group in Ratby I lived in baggy clothes and didn’t have the confidence.” “ I love Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan as I can still enjoy my favourite dish, chicken curry.” “ Before joining I was told I had high blood pressure, since losing 4 stone it has returned to a normal range and I can now complete a shift at work without having to rest regularly.” Gemma Goddard, who runs the Ratby Slimming World group which Cara attends, says she’s extremely proud of Cara. She adds: “Christmas is a time of year for getting dressed up and having a good time. However, I know a lot of my members have told me they’d often dread it because they felt uncomfortable and out of place at parties, which is just so sad. This year I know Cara will feel completely different from previous years. I hope she’ll be accepting every invitation she receives and showing off her fabulous new zest for life – she will definitely live up to her new title of Miss Slinky in my eyes. “I’ve no doubt that she’ll inspire other people to lose weight too and show that whether you’ve got a little or a lot of weight to lose, slimming down can make a big difference to how you feel about yourself and really boost your confidence. Cara is happier, healthier and fitter, and every week the group love hearing about her progress. Cara has wowed everyone with her Slimming World’s version of a McDonald’s breakfast. “Anyone who has been inspired by the Ratby Slimming World group’s Miss Slinky is welcome to join us at the Ratby Methodist church every Wednesday at 5:00pm and 7:00pm. New members can simply pop along or if they’d like more information they can call me on 07891513288.” For further information please contact Gemma Goddard 07891513288 or email gemmagoddard2008@gmail.com

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st January when the subject will be “Turnpikes and Tollgates – a Drive Back in Time”, taking us on a journey back in time, pausing only to pay our toll at the gates! Speaker Mike Gould local historian and chair of K.M.L.H.G. A meeting with Robert “Bob” Barkby and his sister Joyce Crane, continued. Last month, we featured a meeting with Bob Barkby and his sister Joyce. This time, we continue recounting the various experiences and tales of two people who were born and brought up in the village long ago. As you may remember from the last article, Bob is now 98 years old and his sister Joyce, 90. As Bob and Joyce grew up, their lives changed. When Joyce was 6 years old, she was involved in a very serious accident, just by the tree which stood at the entrance to the Royal Oak carpark. Joyce was playing tick around the tree with her friends, when she suddenly ran across the road. Unfortunately, she was hit by a car that did not stop. She was badly injured, including two broken thighs and head and arm injuries. She says that she received a lovely card from Miss Spriggs, the Sunday school teacher, and that the Reverend Simms -Reeve, vicar of St Bart’s, was a wonderful help. As her mother didn’t drive, like most women in those days, the vicar would often take her mother into the LRI Children’s hospital to visit her sick daughter. Fortunately, Joyce recovered. Bob and Joyce have many memories of life in Kirby Muxloe. Playing out in the street was the natural thing to do and they recall playing snobs, whip and top, hopscotch and two ball or three ball (I’m sure that many of us will remember those games. I certainly do! “snobs” is also known by various names, including jackstones and fivestones). Another game that Bob often played was called “flicks”, where a cigarette card was propped against a wall and another card was held between the fingers and flicked, with the intention of hitting the card by the wall. If successful, the player kept the card. Joyce, being 8 years younger than Bob, has different memories to her brother and of course she was living in the village during WWII. One of Joyce’s most startling memories was when she was walking back from Ratby having visited the Majestic cinema in Ratby.
At the time, her family were living at 45, Main Street and for the final part of her journey from Kirby corner to her home she was alone. She was walking in the middle of the road (not much traffic in those days) when she reached Castle Farm and suddenly felt something soft and squashy beneath her feet! On looking down she found to her amazement that the road was covered with frogs! She just couldn’t walk, there were masses of them, presumably coming from the moat and travelling to pastures new. Joyce quickly decided to run down Woodlands Lane, up Desford Road, turn in to Hedgerow Lane and then back down Main Street to reach home. Joyce has memories of the bombing in November 1940, when she would have been around 10 years old. Her father was an Air Raid Precaution Warden in the village and was out on his rounds making sure all the blackout curtains were closed. The sirens went off and at that time her father was standing on the opposite side of the road to the Free Church. He saw a parachute coming down and thought there was a man on the end, so he stood and watched. The parachute landed and a second later there was an almightly blast. Joyce’s father was thrown back into a garden but miraculously was not badly hurt! As we now know, there was a bomb on the end of the parachute, not a man! Joyce remembers going down to a neighbour’s shed just before the bombs dropped, the shed was full of paint tins which fell on top of everyone when the bombs hit. She tells us that their house had a cellar with bunk beds but for some reason they didn’t stay there. Not long before war began, Bob joined the 239th Leicestershire, a part of the Territorial army that soon became the 115th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. On the day that war was declared, he was at his annual T.A. camp, stationed in Bridlington. He recalled that they had very little in the way of arms, just twenty or so rifles, between around two hundred personnel. He recounts that “after war was declared, they had us digging
trenches in Bridlington – don’t know what good that did, talk about Dad’s Army! If we had been invaded, then they would have walked straight through the front door!”. By this time, in his civilian life he had become an apprentice motor mechanic at Sturgess in Leicester and so was sent to the garrison in Catterick, Yorkshire, to join the 123rd Officer Cadet Training Regiment as an instructor. He quickly received training, teaching recruits to drive any form of motor carrier including Churchill and Crusader tanks. He was there for almost the whole time that war was raging in Europe. Whilst working as an instructor, he met lots of interesting people, especially film stars, including Margaret Lockwood and Derek Farr who at the time were starring in a film called “Quiet Wedding”. Most of the trainees were professional people, however, he still remembers one young university graduate who couldn’t understand why his bicycle tyre was flat and had no idea that he needed a pump! Bob met his future wife during the first week of the war. She was on holiday in Bridlington and their romance blossomed. They were married in 1940, and Bob spent the rest of his spare time whilst at Catterick travelling up and down the roads on his Humber 205 motor cycle, visiting his wife in South Yorkshire. He mentioned that he was “more off than on” the cycle, especially on the icy roads in wintertime. Eventually he purchased his first car, which was an Austin Ruby 7. When the war in Europe was finally over, Bob, who was classed as in A1 condition, was sent to the African Gold Coast (now Ghana), which was at the time a British Colony. Whilst there, he did much of the same type of work. After demobilization, Bob settled down to life with his wife in south Yorkshire, where he still lives today. A number of people have asked about Bob and Joyce’s younger brother Brian. Sadly Brian passed away some years ago.

They have kept this very valuable village resource going for the past almost three years, their time being given for no reward other than the great satisfaction of contributing to the life and well-being of Kirby Muxloe. We constantly receive comments about the friendliness, warmth, cheerfulness and competence of the volunteers. It is undoubtedly a great privilege to work with them, and to see how readily and effectively they respond to calls for help when we are mounting special events and new initiatives. Strong bonds of friendship have been formed, together with a collective sense of pride in having been able to keep the Library alive and thriving. So – the biggest of big thanks to you all. New volunteers are always welcome, so if you would like to join this happy band, just drop into the Library and tell us. You will be given full training so no need to worry.
CHRISTMAS QUIZ You may remember that our old friends Rosemary and Roger put together a paper-based quiz last Easter, and have now done the same for this Christmas. The questions range from reasonably easy to more challenging, and hence it makes for a good activity at family
and friends get-togethers over the Christmas period. The forms are now in the Library, ÂŁ1.00 each, and need to be returned by 3rd January. A ÂŁ10.00 book token for the winner!
BEETLE DRIVE We’ve now fixed a date for our Beetle Drive – Saturday 29th February at 2.00 pm in the Library. As well as all the fun of playing the game, you will get a very posh afternoon tea (sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, and a selection of cakes – plus drinks, of course). All included within the price of the ticket. G

LOCAL HISTORY CAFE - Our next set of five Local History Cafes begins on Tuesday 25th February. Our website is now up and running! It couldn’t be easier to access – just go to kirbymuxloelibrary.org and there it is – all our news and future plans, plus you can publicise your own events, write book reviews (we would especially like to hear from children on this), appeal for your lost cat – anything of interest to Kirby Muxloe. Do have a look and contribute to it if you would like to.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH STUDENTS We always enjoy having Duke of Edinburgh students doing their Bronze and Silver Awards, completing the volunteering requirement in the Library. There’s lots to do and most of our volunteers continue to work with us after the end of their placement. We take two students at any one time, and have one vacancy after Christmas. If you would like to join us, drop in to the Library and have a chat with us.
LOCAL YOUNGSTERS ACHIEVE BLACK BELTS Last month students from East Midlands Taekwondo club attended the black belt grading held in Sutton Coldfield. These gradings are only held twice a year and can only be taken after a minimum of four and a half years training. It is with great pleasure and pride that I can announce that Brandon Burns and sister Lea Burns who train at Kirby Muxloe are now 2nd degree black belts whilst cousin Ryan Burns along with Ethan Blackwell who train at the club in Anstey are now 1st degree black belts.

Ratby Community Library & Crow Pie Cafe Ratby Community Library and Crow Pie Café It’s been a busy Autumn in Ratby Community Library: we’ve welcomed new library members, users of our free internet, walking groups ready for a hot drink and big slice of cake, the Wriggly Readers Children’s Group, visitors looking up local history as well as their own personal ancestry, quiz nights and, last but not at all least, our regular readers and visitors to the Crow Pie Café. On 15th November our popular quiz night, run by the ever inventive Steve Roche, saw 20 people challenge each other as well as enjoying a mid-event break for refreshments; wine/beer is on a bring-your-own basis. Our next quiz night will be on Friday 13th December at 7.30 p.m. and there’ll be a Christmas theme to the questions. Every other Thursday we host the Wriggly Readers, a lively session for pre-school children who love the singing, stories and play. If you’re a parent or carer of a toddler, why not come along and enjoy the company of others whilst your child socializes and has fun in our cosy children’s corner. The next session will be Thursday 12th December at 10.30am.
We held a Book and Bacon Butty morning on 2nd November; sadly the rain was incessant and lowered numbers but those who braved the storm enjoyed the Saturday morning treat of fresh rolls and bacon with a wide choice of teas, coffee and soft drinks. Who remembers going on trips to the seaside when you were little? Sea, sand, sticky rock, buckets and spades? Maybe being reminded of the sound of the ice cream van and amusements along the promenade brings it all back? Well, thanks to the Library Service, Ratby Community Library has a special Memory Box, full of seaside related memorabilia designed to awaken memories from another era. The box is designed to give friends plenty to talk about over a cup of tea. Sorry, we can’t provide sunburn or sandy sandwiches but do come along and join in reminiscences of seaside delights. New volunteers have joined our community library team this year; all are from different age groups and walks of life but joined with a willingness to get involved. Why are they happy to give up a morning or afternoon to staff the checkout counter, greet and serve café visitors or try to assist with laptop
searches? Most responded along the lines of ‘I wanted to help people in my community’, or ‘The library offers Ratby a lot and I wanted to support it’. So, if you feel you would enjoy joining our team, please drop in and have a chat with our volunteer co-ordinator Adrian Russell or Mo Loft. Alternatively email on adrian.russell@mail.com or Maurice_loft @hotmail.com Please note new library opening hours: Monday 10am -12.30pm 2pm – 4.30pm Tuesday 10am -12.30pm 2pm – 4.30pm Wednes. 10am -12.30pm 2pm – 6pm Thursday 10am -12.30pm 2pm – 4.30pm Friday 10am -12.30pm 2pm – 4.30pm Saturday 10am – 1pm The library will be closed over the Christmas period from 1pm December 21st, re-opening to a bright New Year at 10am on 2nd January 2020.
Merry Christmas One and All!
Happy Christmas and a Mindful New Year! Possibly your best New Years Resolution ever……… to start looking for the instruction manual for your brain! Mindfulness will definitely point you in the right direction….
Current research is proving Mindfulness techniques and meditations to be highly beneficial in many areas
More energy Less stress and anxiety Better coping skills and decision making Sense of more joy and freedom More focus for work and play Enhanced sports performance Modern Mindfulness originated from ancient Buddhist teachings. It is now widely practised by people of any or no faith. The more we develop our Mindful awareness, the more we realise how many layers of stuff and rubbish we clog our heads up with. We have this amazing piece of equipment, our brain, but we really don’t know how to get the best out of it at all!
• We don’t know how to turn it off - can’t sleep, can’t stop worrying….. • We don’t know how to adjust it - can’t concentrate, can’t accept change…. • We may want to lose weight, stop smoking or drink less alcohol - we may know exactly how to do this but why can’t we?……
Just take a few moments to reflect…do you have a particular fear or regret at the moment? How much time do you spend thinking about that same fear or regret, over and over again? ….The regret will have already happened, the fear will be in the future - so wouldn’t it be great if it wasn’t torturing you NOW?
Have you made a Will?

It is so important - please don’t put it off” We can help with advice on: Wills & Estate Planning, Trusts, Lasting Power of Attorney, Probate & Funeral Planning Call now for peace of mind - Our fees are VERY reasonable Full Member of the Society of Will Writers
Learn to know yourself better and to be kinder to yourself. By gently developing awareness of your hidden unhelpful thinking patterns, you will begin the journey to freedom from them. Better solutions can then be created from a less exhausted and stressed headspace.

Parking on Grass Verges Parking of vehicles on grass verges is a constant source of aggravation to residents the Council and the Council’s contractor since grass cannot be cut where vehicles are parked! This appears to be happening all over the village and has been reported to Leicestershire County Council, after numerous complaints to residents. The recent weather conditions have not, of course, helped the situation! Would those responsible please not park on the grass verges.

LEICESTERSHIRE SPEAKERS -
POETRY, GARDENS AND TOURISM We enjoyed a splendid evening of entertainment at our November meeting. Mark Snow spoke eloquently to illustrate the detrimental effect of over tourism; painting such a picture that the listener could almost believe they were being jostled and pushed whilst attempting view what they came to see. He told how local populations were being swamped with a flood of humanity from cruise ships and arbitrary fines imposed by the Venetian administration for seemingly trivial things such as sitting on the steps of buildings. On a lighter note, Ann Dixon gave a beautifully informed speech about gardens including the common kitchen garden and describing the splendour of formal gardens where topiary is a feature. She transported us from a miserable November to Spring and its lovely flowers.

Sylvia Bosworth devised an imaginative topics session to tax a speaker’s imagination. Written on slips of paper handed out by Sylvia was the first line of a poem around which the candidate had to craft their story. Featured amongst the poets were Philip Larkin, Louis McNeice and Margery Farjeon. All speakers ‘stood up to the plate’ and told some wonderful stories. Top Christmas The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com
Road Works Temporary Traffic lights Berry’s Lane / Main Street, Ratby I called out Highways on Monday evening suggesting a better layout for the above road works. I suggested making temporary parking restrictions along Main Street and also putting out earlier warning boards. The problem was caused by vehicles coming down Main Street into the centre of the village. However they were being forced to go onto the wrong side of the road in order to overtake parked vehicles and then queue at the temporary lights. This then caused problems for vehicles travelling up Main Street in the opposite direction on the green light. They could not move forward as the road was blocked with vehicles queuing on their side of the road coming down Main Street. I rang highways and asked officers to urgently review the traffic management of these temporary lights after I had tried to free up the traffic. Officers did attend and adjust signing. I then arranged for the lights to be removed on Tuesday straight after the works had been completed.
Treble Triumph for the County Council’s Performance It’s a hat-trick for Leicestershire County Council which has again been named the most productive council in the country for the third year running. The council again claimed the top spot in this year’s table compiled by consultancy firm IMPOWER. The list of 149 councils evaluates council performance by measuring value for money and to what degree each pound spent is improving lives. IMPOWER compares 149 councils in England
and looks at a range of areas including overall performance, older people, housing and homelessness and children’s social care.
Champion award replaces its Education Equality Index, in which the county council finished third, its highest-ever ranking.
Retaining the number one spot for the third year in a row is excellent news.
As a Stonewall CYPS Champion, the council receives full access to Stonewall’s education resources which help tailor the support offered across its children and young people service. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the work being done to promote diversity and equality in schools. With partners, we are leading the way in LGBT inclusion.
Transformation remains crucial and by driving down costs and still maintaining services we’ve been able to get extra bang for our buck. Leicestershire’s position as the lowest funded county in the country is an unenviable one. But one that sharpens our focus on squeezing the best results from a smaller pot. We remain determined to achieve fair funding for Leicestershire since we can do so much more for people. Byron Rhodes, deputy council leader
Award for tackling LGBT bullying The county council has been recognised as one of the country's leading local authorities for tackling LGBT bullying and celebrating difference in its schools. The authority has been awarded gold Stonewall Children and Young Persons Service (CYPS) champion status - one of only five authorities to receive the recognition. The award success is a brilliant boost for the council's Beyond Bullying team as it promotes Anti-Bullying Week, which starts today (11th November) and runs until Friday (15th November). The message this year is 'Change Starts With Us' with the team also taking part in its associated Odd Socks Day (12th November).
Green plaque awards open for nominations A call has gone out for people to nominate individuals and places important to Leicestershire’s past that they feel should be honoured with a green plaque award. Nominations for the sixth round of the popular scheme, which recognises the impact individuals and places across the county have had on local communities, are now open and will close at midnight on Monday, 23 December. A dozen of the county’s most famous people and buildings will then be shortlisted by a panel of judges before a public vote to decide on the top six to receive a plaque. The green plaque awards always get a fantastic response from the public, who have the opportunity to pay tribute to people and places who have made a mark on the history of their communities.
Ivan Ould, County Council cabinet member for children and families, said the high ranking achieved is a sign of the continued hard work put in by the anti-bullying team.
We’ve recently unveiled green plaques to a pair of suffragette sisters, a First World War poet and the man who illustrated many of the Thomas the Tank Engine and Ladybird books loved by generations of children. We would love to hear about even more people and places that should be recognised.
Stonewall is Britain’s leading lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality charity and the new CYPS
I would encourage as many people as possible to become involved in the next round

Hi everyone and seasons greetings to you all, as Christmas fast approaches and the New Year is almost upon us I always find this time of year is a time of reflection of the year that has past, one thing I know is time seems to fly bye and doesn’t wait for anyone. This past 12 months at the club have been full of ups and downs and to say at times things have been difficult would be an underestimation but with the help of a lot of good people we have continued to provide a service and facilities for our community and create an atmosphere for people to meet up and enjoy spending tie with friends and family. This year we have welcomed back the Table Skittles team, hosted the A and B Pool team, we are the home for The Ratby Ninjas on a Saturday morning, Zumba class on a Thursday morning, home for the Boroughs Hill Bowmen, the junior cricket has gone from strength to strength which includes the All Star Cricket which continued on from last season, the senior section has continued to flourish and become an even more tight knit group after the sad loss of our dear friend Ed Lee, the football section although we have less teams this year which is disappointing we have adopted a girls football club AFC Leicester ladies who use our facilities and use us as a base which has introduced a load more people to our club that had never been before. We have hosted lots of parties from children’s birthday’s and Christening’s to 70ths and retirement parties. The club is a non profit organisation and apart from 2 members of staff is run by volunteers without these people giving up their time this facility would not be able to function, I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people, lets call it my New Years Honours List (in no particular order), Adrian(Mungo) Macleod, Chris Clark, Paul Cockerill, Rachel Cockerill, Karen Mangham, Yvonne Murray, James Young, Andy Culver, Jack Foley, Sam Gill, Dan Barber, Kyle Dixon, Hayley Mangham-Bailey, Zak Bailey, Kelly Holt, Annie-Mae Cooper, Ash Macleod, Stevo Macleod, Harry Lillystone, Michael Guttridge, Frank (AKA George) Cooper, Rory Leggett, Jade Charles, Alan Charles and Tracey Charles, Lee Hand, Harry Lord, I’ve bound to have missed someone out please forgive me if I have. I would like to give a special mention to James Lillystone, the work he puts in that goes unrecognised is unbelievable without his help the club would have closed along time ago, the amusing thing is it has become a bit of a competition between us to see who is the least popular person in the village (in certain circles) and
the very fact it is a 2 horse race means he deserves great credit! Moving forward into 2020 the future of the club is uncertain again there are all kinds of rumours flying around about the club closing down and it being sold, as I write this article all I can say is that there are plans a foot and they are very positive and should be fantastic for our village, it’s to early to say exactly what but I hope to put some flesh on the bones in the next issue of the Local but until then it is business as usual. This brings me on to our festive opening hours which are as follows.. December 20th – Open 6pm to 11pm King of the Road Karaoke FREE ENTRY December 21st – Open 4pm to 11pm Manchester City V Leicester City Kick off 5.30pm December 22nd – Open 11am to 6pm December 23rd – Closed December 24th – Open 4pm to 11pm Christmas Eve games, disco and Father Christmas visits

December 26th – Closed December 27th – Open 6pm to 11pm December 28th – Open 4pm to 11pm West Ham V Leicester City kick off 5.30pm December 29th – Open 11am to 6pm December 30th – Closed
New Years Eve Party for ALL the family Adults £5 in advance Kids FREE January 1st – Closed Please note that on Christmas Eve it will cost £2 to see Father Christmas and get a present, if you could contact us to let us know if your child will be coming along it would be appreciated so we can make sure Father Christmas brings enough presents. On New Year Eve it is £5 entry with tickets available in advance from the Sports Bar, please note there are no tickets on the evening, kids are FREE and are more than welcome, we will have the fireworks from London on the big screen and watch Big Ben chime 12 and see the New Year in. There are a lot of Leicester City games coming up on tv come down and experience our multi screen surround sound atmosphere, the last few games have bought a good crowd and atmosphere as the mighty foxes continue their quest for European football. In the last issue I mentioned the immanent birth of Stevo and Ashley Macleod’s first child and I am delighted to announce the birth of Elise Ruby Macleod, she is absolutely terrific and a massive congratulations to both, I would also like to congratulate Hannah and Chris Clark on the birth of their second son Dexter a little brother for Freddie, 2 future Ratby Town Cricketers I am sure, the word is Dexter has already showed more promise than his dad. We are taking bookings for the New Year so contact me for availability. We are still looking for new clubs, teams and sports to join us. That leaves me to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, have a good one stay safe and we hope to see you soon. Regards,
Garry

Try our tips for a healthier Christmas. Well it's that season of the year again and we thought that you might appreciate a little reminder to put Christmas in perspective, ‘Tis the season to be jolly’ but jolly is the last thing many of us feel with overspending, cooking, cleaning, endless ‘to do’ lists and visitors we could do without. Remember, the actual Christmas holiday is generally 2 days out of 365 and it isn’t worth stressing over. Christmas is notoriously a time to indulge, but don’t let this be the green light to overindulge! You can still enjoy all the festivities of the season and get through the Christmas period without too much impact on your health and waistline. Don’t Sit Down All Day - You don’t need to be a couch potato all day! Encourage the whole family to get out for a walk at some point – ideally, after dinner to aid digestion. The more activity, the better, so take along any new outdoor gifts, like bikes, scooters, footballs or Frisbees, or play oldfashioned games.
Go Easy On The Booze - If you are firmly ensconced at home over the festive period, those alcohol units can really mount up. Mulled wine on Christmas eve, Bucks Fizz with breakfast, wine with dinner, Baileys, brandy… the list goes on! So, do try to keep tabs on how much you are drinking, and intersperse alcoholic drinks with soft ones. Drink A Lot Of Water as this can help you control your appetite as well as keep you hydrated at all times. And it will also prevent a possible hangover if you overdo it with alcohol Don’t overeat! - Recent research suggests that we consume around 3,000 calories in our Christmas dinner more than the entire recommended daily intake for a grown man! This huge feast not only contributes to weight gain but also to indigestion and heartburn – not to mention lethargy for the rest of the day, reducing the chances of you burning much of it off. Instead of gorging yourself on Christmas dinner, eat a normal-sized meal and then take a 20-minute break to see if you are still hungry (it takes this long for the brain to register that the stomach is full). The chances are, you’ll realise you’ve had enough. Keep Colds At Bay - Colds are rife at Christmas, partly because many of us travel around the country, exposing ourselves – and others – to different cold viruses. Minimise your risks by maintaining a healthy immune system (eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and not smoking will help), so you are more able to fight off any viruses. Keep in common cold remedies for the family Eat Fruit - Let’s be honest, most of us get through the entire Christmas period eating no more fruit than the satsuma in the Christmas stocking. It just doesn’t really feature on the Christmas menu. But at this time of late nights, overindulging and partying, it’s more important than ever to get your vitamins and minerals, to help you stay in good health. Ensure that your Christmas shopping list enables you to fill up the fruit bowl and get your recommended daily portions of fruit and veg. Do Something For Others whether it’s baking some extra mince pies for an elderly neighbour or even inviting them round for a Christmas meal it's a great way to keep an eye on your neighbour especially if the weather is particularly cold.
GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US?
Food safety - If your Christmas duties include cooking the dinner, you won’t be delighted to hear that according to the Food Standards Agency, December is one of the most common months for people to get food poisoning. To minimise the risks, don’t leave food out all day. Put out small amounts at a time, so that what is on the table has just been cooked or just come out of the fridge. Ideally, try to use any leftovers within 48 hours or freeze them. As for the turkey, always defrost it in the fridge, allowing 10 to 12 hours per kilo and do not wash the bird, as this can spread bacteria around, which will be destroyed by cooking anyway. If you do become ill over Christmas please remember to call an ambulance if you are suffering from chest pain. For any other medical problem ring 111 And most importantly, have a happy, healthy festive season!

DECEMBER UPDATE A CHRISTMAS CONCERT NOT TO BE MISSED The whole organization of the Ratby Cooperative Band will be presenting their annual Christmas Concert on Sunday 14th December at Bosworth College Desford. The first half of the concert will include performances by the Beginner, Junior, Mid and Senior Bands. The second half all players will be on stage performing together as one massed band. For tickets ring 0116 431 4511 At this concert the bumper 200 Club Christmas bumper draw will take place. MID BAND The Mid Band has had a busy couple of months. On September 14th the band did the Ratby Organisation proud by taking part for the first time in their 22 year history, at the National Brass Band Championships in Cheltenham alongside the best fourth section bands in the UK, after winning the Midland Area Fourth Section Contest earlier in the year. The band has then competed in the Leicestershire Brass Band Association Contest for their final time in the fourth section, having been promoted to the third section as of 2020. In November, on Remembrance Sunday, the band led the Armistice parade in Blaby, as well as several members playing the Last Post and Reveille around the county, including at the open-air service of remembrance in Kirby Muxloe.
The Band is now preparing for the Christmas season, and beyond, with many carolling engagements, with appearances at supermarkets and garden centres, including: Sainsburys (Fosse Park), Waitrose (Mountsorrel), Costco (Thurmaston), and Woodlands; Dobbies. The band, alongside the rest of the Ratby Organisation, will also be out playing around Ratby Village on the morning of 15th December. In the New Year, our concert programme begins again with the annual New Year Concert at Kirby Muxloe Free Church on Saturday 25th January at 7:30pm. Tickets are now on sale for this event, and can be requested through the church by contacting the office on: admin@kirbyfree.org or 0116 2393173. Tickets are also available by speaking to any of our band members. Tickets cost £7.00 each, with under 16s being able to attend free of charge. Finally, have you ever thought of hiring a band / brass ensemble for an event you are putting on? The band is available for any many different events, from a concert, opening ceremony, a wedding, or that special occasion. The cost of hire is dependent on what is required and can be discussed by contacting the Band via our website. SENIOR BAND - The band once again led the remembrance weekend, on Saturday 10th November where an appreciative audience enjoyed a Festival of Remembrance concert held in St Philip and St James Church Ratby. Our special guests for the evening were The Heart of England Chorus. A moving tribute took place as the band performed “lest we forget”, a fantastic item which knitted together many of the popular songs of the first world war including extracts of famous speeches, delivered by Greg Webber our Bb tuba player. On Armistice Sunday the band was once again performing as they could be seen leading the parade and service as the
Ratby community gathered to pay their respects. Defending champion Ratby Co-operative Band led the prize winners at the Leicestershire Brass Band Association Open Contest held at Loughborough Endowed Schools on Sunday 24th November. Conducted by Mareika Gray, the band impressed in its performance of own choice work, Fraternity, by ~Thierry Deleruyell, which led adjudicator Mark Wilkinson to award the band first place. This builds on a victory in 2018 and podium places in 2017 and 2016. Victory rounded off a fine season for the band, one which has also seen them claim victory at the Buxton Festival, a podium finish at the Midlands Area and also gained promotion to the Grand Shield. In addition to retaining the title, they took the ‘Best Trombone Section’ award. This is the eighth time the Trombone award has been won by Ratby. The band have recently rebranded their stage wear having purchased new bright blue shirts and navy waistcoats. The waist coats emblem being the “Ratby R”. This image depicts the band with some of the trophies won at competitions over the past year. FANCY LEARNING TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? A fantastic opportunity for some new brass beginners!! The young and young at heart all welcome.... Please contact John on 07792 783426 if you know anyone who might be interested. 200 CLUB - We are pleased to confirm the recent winners of our monthly 200 club draw MONTH PRIZE NO. Ratby Primary School News.... Sponsored Read Challenge During the month of November, the pupils at Ratby Primary School were challenged to take part in a Sponsored Read. Their challenge was to read every single night for the whole month of November and record it on a calendar. Depending on the age of the child, this was for either 10 minutes a night or longer for KS2 pupils. Children were asked to get sponsored for the challenge and the PSA kindly said that they would match fund whatever the children raised. Our target was to reach £2000! At the time of writing, the challenge is in full swing so we are all very excited to see how much money has been raised for our school library.
Dinosaurs Roar! Foundation Stage We have had an amazing few weeks finding out about dinosaurs. We followed the children’s interests, discovering what the dinosaurs ate, and how big they were. The children brought in dinosaur exhibits for our museum and we visited the New Walk museum, seeing the enormous dinosaur skeletons on display.
Year 6 Remembrance Assembly On the 11th November, we performed a dedication to all of those who died in war (soldiers and animals). We marched into the songs: ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ and ‘pack up your troubles’. Seven of the pupils opened the assembly with their well-learnt speeches. We made propaganda posters to show what posters were like in the great world war. Eight of the pupils read out the emotionally gripping poem: ‘What are we fighting for?’ Then, two children read out their diaries to the audience. We watched a short extract of war horse to show how horrible it was for the animals in battle. Year 6 wrote brilliant setting descriptions and poems about what being on the battlefield was like, a few of which we read out. We also watched a short clip about Sergeant Stubby who was a hero in dog form. He barked when he heard the footsteps of Germans. He wagged his tail when he could smell gas, warning the soldiers to put their gas masks on to survive.
Many of the children were already experts and they have enjoyed using their knowledge, playing in our Role Play museum in the classroom. Last week we found some eggs in the museum so we can’t wait to see what hatches from them!
After four long and dreadful years, the war came to an end. We stopped and paid a one-minute silence to pay our respects to the fallen soldiers, played The Last Post in remembrance and after, said a short prayer. Leading up to this assembly, Year 6 learnt how traumatising WW1 really was! Hopefully you have enjoyed reading this amazing article. Year 6 will get back to you soon.
By Chloe, Freya and Lily-Anne.

Application for 168 dwellings off Markfield Road, Ratby. As the next Planning Committee Meeting, scheduled for December 10th has now been cancelled due to (A), the closeness of the General Election and (B). There were no applications needing determination by this date, the meeting has been cancelled. However, the next meeting that is scheduled for January 7th may not see this application being determined as the applicants have still failed to supply information in regard to Highways Safety and other details to HBBC so it may well go to February 4th. We will of course keep residents updated.
HGV'S in Ratby Residents are becoming increasingly concerned with another increase in HGV'S using the village as a cut through to access Poundstretcher and violating the strict weight limits on Main St. We have yet again contacted the local police commander Inspector Emma Maxwell to discuss this issue and she has assured us that as and when resources are available, her traffic officers are coming to Ratby to issue fines to the drivers. If residents have any photographic evidence showing HGV'S coming down Main St then please forward them to us.
Cllr Chris Boothby Tel: 01162 161461 or 07880 711222 Email: chris.boothby@hotmail.com
Parish and Community Initiative Fund This fund from HBBC, started by our administration, is now available to Community Groups who wish to improve things in the village. Funds, which have to be 50% match funded, can be applied for until January 2020 and can reach £10'000. Please contact Mr Paul Scragg at HBBC to apply online.
Fly Tipping Yet again, we are seeing fly tipping in and around the village such as household waste and even large white goods. If people are caught then the Borough Council will always prosecute. We would like to remind residents that HBBC offer a collection service for large items and 3 can be collected for only £15.00.
Borough Bulletin HBBC are looking to recruit new delivery people to distribute the free Borough Bulletin to every household in Ratby and Groby. This would be a paid service to the deliverers and details can be sought by contacting the Borough Council. It is suitable for anyone aged 13 or over and they have two weeks to complete the delivery so it can be done weekends or evenings/daytimes to suit. Details of rounds: Groby – GAA 1715 papers - £153.09
(permanent) Groby – GAB 1222 papers - £109.08 (permanent) Ratby – HBC 2041 papers - £182.34 (winter edition only) Newspapers will be available to collect from goods inwards at the Hinckley Hub on Friday 3 January 2020. The deadline to have rounds completed and claim forms returned by is Friday 17 January 2020. Jacqueline Puffett Communications Manager Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council Email: jacqueline.puffett@hinckley-bosworth .gov.uk - Phone: 01455 255630
And finally .... We would like to take this time to wish all our residents a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year and to thank you for your support over this past year. Best Regards
Chris & Ozzy.
