Update on Planning Application 19/00680/OUT for Markfield Road, Ratby. The application for 168 houses on land to the rear of Markfield Rd was heard by the Planning Committee at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council on February 4th. Over 30 local residents attended to Support Ozzy and Chris. Local resident Joseph Pollard spoke against the application as a local resident his speech was excellent detailing reasons why this application should be refused. Both Ozzy and Chris gave sound Planning reasons under the local plans quoting policy why this application should be refused. Chris who is a member of the planning committee put those planning reasons forward with a request to overturn the officer’s recommendations and refuse the application. That motioned was seconded but before it could be voted on the Chairman Cllr Joyce Crooks told members of the committee they should not refuse this application due to the lack of the Councils 5 year housing supply and if they did the agent would certainly go to appeal and the Council would defiantly loose the appeal and have costs awarded against us. The committee then voted on motion for refusal that had been put forward by Chris and the motion was lost. The Liberals then proposed the application should be granted. That motion was passed by the Liberal democrat members by a majority of one vote. To say we are both gutted is an understatement as we both put sound planning reasons forward for refusal that were ignored by the committee. Highways have insisted the developer provides traffic calming measures on Markfield Road to reduce the speed of the traffic around their new proposed junction. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards . Working for you.

Year 10 Girls Futsal Team win the Hinckley and Bosworth Area Tournament for the fourth year in a row! Brookvale Groby Learning Campus Year 10 Girls Futsal Team participated in Area tournaments on Thursday 16th January at Heath Lane Academy. Showing amazing skills, confidence, teamwork and attitude the girls were able to secure their fourth win in four years. The girls took wins over Hastings High School, Hinckley Academy and St Martins, and despite dominating the game a draw was achieved against Bosworth Academy. The girls will now go on to represent Hinckley and Bosworth at the upcoming county tournament, with the hope that they will also take the County Cup for the fourth year in a row. Goals were made by Mackenzie Smith and Dulci Binns and Sasha Booree added herself to the scoreboard with an amazing long distance kick. Darcy Warden was fantastic stepping in to the Goal Keeper position and Lucy Hollingworth and Rhea Rushin were strong and solid in defence letting nothing get past them.

Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East Crime Prevention – Vehicle Crime

In January over 50 vehicles were checked with over 10 vehicles and/or individuals being stopped and searched. This lead to 2 arrests for drugs offences and possession of offensive weapons.

Vehicle crime is unfortunately a constant blight in our communities. Unfortunately a large percentage of vehicle crime occurs because opportunists are being given an easy time by members of the public not locking their vehicles.

These proactive patrols form part of wider operations which are ongoing. Information from members of the public is crucial in helping us to attend incidents as they happen and after any incident as it helps us build a picture of vehicles involved and descriptions of potential suspects.

Here are a few further tips to consider when thinking about vehicle security:  Leave it on show expect it to go. Always remove valuables from your vehicle  Remove Satnavs including cradles and their sucker marks

If you see anything suspicious, please let us know so that we can deal with incidents and use the intelligence to direct our patrols where they are most needed.

School Parents Evenings Look out for your beat team in the coming months at Fossebrook, Stafford Leys and Kirby Muxloe Primary Schools. We’ll be there to hear any concerns you have around the Parish’s.

LEICESTERSHIRE SPEAKERS It seemed unbelievable that the Christmas festivities were over and members of Leicestershire Speakers were sitting down at the Drop in Centre for our first meeting of 2020 – where does time go? Once the business meeting was concluded it was straight into the main purpose of our meeting – to speak! Speak we did, doing credit to John Baron’s idea of impromptu speeches whereby members were requested to submit slips of paper suggesting an unwanted Christmas present from a dearly loved aunt. Smug expressions were soon replaced by looks of concern as John dropped his bombshell. The speaker had to describe how the unwanted gift was actually what they had yearned for all year. There were howls of laughter, as items were described; Mark who is over six feet tall was the recipient of a delicate glass teapot and to listen to him eulogising over this gift was real gift to the listener. A guest who joined us delivered a wonderful impromptu speech about the gift of a portrait of obscure ancestor. It would be lovely if mention of all the gifts was possible; unfortunately space places constraint on words. The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. For more information ring Bev Capewell on 0116 2770266 or visit our website www.leicspeakers.co.uk. We can also provide entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.

Organ donation changes this Spring THE LAW around organ donation is changing in England. This means that from spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. This is commonly referred to as an ‘opt out’ system. Your family would always be involved before donation takes place, so it is really important that you choose whether you want to be a donor and discuss what you want to happen with your family, so your decision is clear and they can have peace of mind knowing that your decision is being honoured. TEAM ENGLAND SUCCESS FOR THE JACKSON SISTERS!

Tap and go ... straight into debt THE INCREASING USE of contactless payments is leading young people into debt.

A recent study has found that one in five Londoners below the age of 45 are struggling to pay their debts, because of the ease of making ‘tap and go’ payments. Now more than one in 10 young people are thinking of stopping their contactless and online payments, and moving back to cash, as a better way to control their spending. The study was carried out at the University of London. It comes after data from the Insolvency Service showed that the number of young people going bankrupt has increased 10-fold over the past three years.

Brookvale Groby Learning Campus Year 12 student Alicia Jackson, pictured right, and Layla Jackson, Year 8, pictured left, currently dance at the Dupont Dance Stage School in Leicester. Dupont was founded by Janette Dupont in the 1950s. It is now run by her daughter and son in law Rebecca and Oscar Sarrafan and is currently one of the leading stage schools in the country. In June 2020 Dupont Dance Stage School will be competing as part of the “Team England” at the Dance world cup in Rome! Dance World Cup is the largest and most prestigious competition of its kind in the world. 45 of Dupont's students aged 6 - 18 years will perform 35 dances, chosen by the national selectors from thousands of entries across the country. Alicia has managed to qualify for 8 dances (2 solos, 2 duets, 1 quartet and 3 groups) and her sister Layla has managed to qualify for 4 group dances. To compete for England is an honour and an incredible lifetime experience for these students!

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm.

village lent a hand, by offering car parking, horses, sign writing, anonymous donations, the list is endless. We must not forget the kind permission granted by the Ministry of Works in order that the Pageant could be acted out in the Castle grounds.

Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org

And so, the story of “Kirby Castle the Unfinished” began. Narrated by Donald Cameron, the first scene opened at the May Festival in 1471 A.D. The May Queen was crowned and supported by dancers gathering around the Maypole. William, Lord Hastings, who was very loyal to the exiled Edward IV and who had already built a castle at Ashby, was keen to further his position of power, by building another great fortified house, here in Kirby Muxloe. He envisaged Kirby Muxloe as an important resting place for people traveling on their way to Leicester. He saw his chance when he heard that Edward had landed in England and was determined to regain the throne. In the subsequent scenes, Edward, the exiled king is shown arriving in Kirby Muxloe, accompanied by his queen and two young sons (later to be murdered in the tower of London). Hastings requests and is granted, royal consent to build a large fortified house in the village. Work began in 1480. However, in 1483, Edward became ill and died. Lord Hastings still remained loyal to the family of the dead king and therefore earnt the distrust of Richard, who was soon to become Richard III. Richard accused Hastings of having committed treason by conspiring against his life with the Woodvilles, with Hastings's mistress Jane Shore acting as a go-between. This led to the execution of Lord Hastings without, it is generally believed, any trial. Sadly, although Hastings’ wife lived on in the castle for another three years and a small amount of building

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 17th March 2020 at 7:30 p.m., when the speaker will be Felicity Austin taking a look back in time to “Life in the Swinging Sixties”. Visitors are always most welcome.

Kirby Castle the Unfinished - the Pageant of June 17th to 20th 1953 How many people can look back to 1953, and remember the Kirby Muxloe Pageant? There are certainly a good number of people still living in the village, who are now in their 70’s, 80’s or even 90’s, who will recall the event. I would love to say that I, myself, have memories of that time, but sadly, I do not. Living in Ratby at the time and being very young, events in the village were not on my radar. 1953 was not so very long after the end of WWII. Clothing rationing had ceased in 1949, but food rationing had not completely finished until 1954, with meat being the final commodity to cease rationing. By the early ‘50’s, the village was getting back on its feet, demolished houses were being rebuilt and those with major damage had been repaired. It was time to celebrate and what better way than to stage a pageant involving everyone in the village who wanted to take part. The date appears to have been set to coincide with the Coronation of our present queen, which was just two weeks earlier, on June 2nd. The village was already bedecked with Union Jack flags and streamers and street parties were held all over the village. The Pageant was not a small enterprise, but a large and lavish spectacle, never seen before in the village and never seen since. The Pageant itself was written by Leslie Walker, a man who had many years of experience in pageantry, and who began his pre-war work at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Leslie was asked to write a script based on the story of Kirby Castle, of the fall from grace of Lord Hastings and his subsequent untimely death. The producer was Mabs Wheeler, a village resident with a great interest in drama. In November 1952, auditions were held in the Community Centre, with over one hundred people taking part. The final cast numbered over eighty adults and thirty children, plus the many villagers who worked behind the scenes on costumes, staging, ticket sales and so many other things. The pageant included dancing troupes, archers, musicians, wrestlers, singers and many more. Many people in the

work was carried out, by 1485 the castle has been abandoned. Meanwhile Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, having amassed an army, marched to Leicestershire and met Richard III in battle at Bosworth Field. The result was played out in the final scene, with Richard’s body being taken on horseback into Leicester and consigned to the care of the monks of Grey Friars. People were often sceptical about this tale but, as we all know now, it was most definitely true. Richard’s remains were found under a Leicester City Council car park (previously Leicester Grammar School annex car park) situated in Peacock Lane in Leicester. His remains were re-interred in Leicester Cathedral on 22 March 2015. The Pageant programme, printed at the time received much support from local businesses, demonstrated by the inclusion of 41 separate advertisements. Many businesses did not advertise but gave anonymous donations to the funds. Although we are not told the exact amount of profit gained from the production, it is clear that an amount in excess of £600 was donated to the newly built Community Centre. This amount was gratefully received and not only cleared the £600 debt still standing after the building work had finished, but also provided funds for further development of the centre. There will be a display of photographs relating to the Pageant in St Bart’s church hall and the Library during the months of February and March. A significant amount of information in this article has been taken from the programme entitled “Kirby Castle the Unfinished”.

As tickets are going quite slowly, it occurred to us that maybe you don’t know what a beetle drive is? It’s a game that most of us who are a bit older will know well but perhaps others may not? In essence, it’s a throw of the dice game, where you have to throw a 6 to start. A 6 means that you can draw a body for the beetle. Players then continue to throw the dice in turn to add a head (5), 2 eyes (1), 2 antennae (3), 2 wings (4) and 6 legs (3) – see the diagram. Eyes and antennae can only be added once the head is in place. The winner on each table scores points, and points are added up after several rounds to get an overall winner – for which there will be a prize. A bit daft, rather silly, dead easy – and lots of fun! If you did the Christmas quiz, you will know how amusing, challenging and fun these paper-based quizzes are. Roger & Rosemary have again offered to do one for us for Easter. The quiz sheets will be available in the Library from March, at £1.00 per sheet, with a £10.00 book token for the winner.

LOCAL HISTORY CAFE Our first Local History Cafe came to a successful conclusion in January, and we are now preparing for our second. This begins on 25th February at the Library from 10.30 – 12.30, and will run at monthly intervals for 5 meetings.

UP AND COMING EVENTS We have a number of ideas for the rest of the year, including: • A return of the N’Ukes ukulele band, with ploughmans and puddings – September. • Meet the Author – Jo Vigor who has a strong interest in and has written about Joseph Merrick – June. • An afternoon tea event to celebrate VE Day, set to a light jazz background – May. • An opportunity to engage in a Sewing Circle – June. • And (of course) another Quiz Night. Dates and details yet to be decided, but we will keep you informed, so watch this space. Another idea at the back of our minds is a Barn Dance, probably in the Autumn. Get your jeans, check shirts, cowboy boots and Stetsons ready!

AN APPEAL Would the lady who came into the Library about a couple of weeks ago to book a place for her mother on the next Local History Cafe please contact Liz Collinson on 0116 2393332. You gave us your email address, but we have to shamefacedly admit that we mislaid it. Many apologies, but there are spaces available and we would love to hear from you again!

All this, plus an elegant afternoon tea! Do come along – if nothing else, it will be good for a laugh!

OUR FAMOUS ROGER AND ROSEMARY QUIZ NIGHT – FRIDAY 27TH MARCH, 7.45 pm AT ST BARTHOLEMEW’S CHURCH HALL Wonderful Roger and Rosemary are creating a quiz for us on Friday 27th March, at 7.45pm. As before, this will be at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, and you will be pleased to know that we have our usual excellent fish and chip providers. You will

come along. We offer refreshments, including cakes suggested by you, tea and coffee in elegant crockery, and a chance for you to shape the programme by coming up with ideas about local history that you would like to pursue. There is a £3.00 fee per session, plus we have a small transport budget if you have difficulty in getting about. Booking forms are available at the Library.

If you are feeling a bit socially isolated, or are worried about becoming so, are over 50 and have a bit of an interest in local history, do

Volunteers Required for Bereavement Support Group in Ratby

Coiled Spring

We're looking for warm and empathetic volunteers to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a brand new service, providing much needed bereavement support to people in Ratby. As a Support Bereavement Volunteer, you will attend the bereavement support group meetings to help our bereavement team to provide short-term support to people who have been bereaved Whilst it is not a counselling service, your role will involve actively listening to people who access our group to support them with their grief and help them to explore their feelings post-bereavement. Offering support to someone who has been bereaved can be an emotionally challenging but extremely rewarding experience. You will be required to attend a training course to develop your skills, meet other volunteers and learn more about the service. If you would like more information please contact Joan Hawkins tel 07545 909868 This is an unpaid role

Ratby Parish Church Lunch Club The Lunch Club has now been running for over 7 years and is very popular with an average of 40 people each month. There is always space for new people so if you are interested in attending or know someone who might like to attend whether they live on their own or maybe an elderly couple who are becoming frail and would enjoy the company. We do not make a charge for this meal but if you would like to leave a donation it helps us to ensure we can continue to provide a 3 course traditional Sunday lunch for everyone. If you would like to attend please contact: Joan Hawkins: Pastoral Assistant tel no. 0116 2395826 - Dates until July 2020 - 23/2/20 - 29/3/20 - 26/4/20 - 31/5/20 - 5/7/20

The winter’s freeze still has its edge With glistening webs in every hedge Deep mists to greet the early dawn And shimmering frosts upon the lawn We turn the heat up, stay inside The puddles freeze and children slide (It's true we did the same thing too, with steamy breath, hands frozen blue) We strap on boots to take some air We brave some walks, in winter wear On frosty ground, by frozen lakes Through thinning cloud the weak sun breaks But January is behind us now Our thoughts are turned towards just how To find some plans, some means, some ways To fill the ever brightening days The flags of nature, there to see With sprouting buds on bush and tree First tips of snowdrops breaking forth The birds returning to the North The time to plan the garden’s near What shall we plant and grow this year? There’s seeds to buy and then to set Plant pots to wash, compost to get The pressure’s on, the time is short ‘cause February (as you might have thought) Has always been (will be for keeps) The shortest, even when it leaps Don’t worry, don’t get in a fizz Though longer than it usually is The day of Valentine will flash past March beckons, things are moving fast Kirby lad

Friends of the Charnwood Forest

Dr D McNeil

There is an old definition of a ‘weed’ for a gardener which states that it will thrive and multiply under the prevailing conditions, whereas a ‘flower’ will not. ‘Flowers’ can become weeds, but rarely do weeds become flowers, and then only when they are moved from their country of origin to somewhere else. So, what does ‘prevailing conditions’ mean? To start with, the soil; this can be too wet or too dry for certain plants. It must not be too acidic or too basic: it must or must not contain certain minerals. The amount of light the plant receives must be just right. Some plants will not thrive in shade, others in direct sunlight. The temperature range must be just right; many plants are said to be ‘hardy’ if they survive the lowest temperatures of the winter – clearly this will depend on where in the world they are. Non-hardy plants will be killed off by those temperatures. In some places this can be governed not only by the location of the place there are in, but whether they are on a north or south facing slope. Our speaker this month, Uta Hamzaoui, has been working on the Living Landscapes project in the Charnwood Forest since 2012. Her job is to explore the various areas in the Forest, mainly outside designated reserves, and to advise landowners of the best methods of maintaining interesting environments, mainly for the plant life, though she did mention a couple of rare bugs at the end of her talk. At present the Living Landscape project covers the Forest and the Soar and Wreake valleys, but may be extended to two further areas around the Eyebrook reservoir. Certain ‘prevailing conditions’ did not have to be covered; the Forest has a fairly uniform climate, and annual plants will have seed that set and flourish at the right time of year. Light is not a problem, as there are no real mountains to shield out the sunlight. This only leaves soils. These depended on the nature of the rocks where they were formed and the drainage. The oldest rocks in the Forest are over 600 million years old, and formed part of the volcanic activity which took place in those times. Soils on those rocks are thin and acidic. By 250 million years ago mudstones had formed, and desert conditions prevailed. The heavy clays we now see are red in colour from the sands. Finally the glaciers of the ice age carved through the rocks, resulting in some places having excellent drainage, others poor, and a few places where there is virtually none. The next invasion was the farmer and agriculture. The tree cover was virtually eliminated. Most of the Forest is not suitable for ploughing, with rocks protruding through the soil, so pasture and grazing animals formed the bulk of the farming activity. In fact, certain types of heathland can only be preserved economically by grazing. Streams and rivers drained much of the land with a little encouragement, but in a few places bogs and wetlands still prevail. Our speaker selected examples of each type of habitat, and gave us details of some of the plants to be found on each, including some interesting facts about symbiotic plants and semi-parasitic ones. These were all well illustrated with ‘slides’. We all came away somewhat wiser than we may have been before. The next meeting will be on 17th February at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall, when Peter Liddle, once the county archaeologist, will talk about Lady Jane Grey and Bradgate House.

Paramedics warn that too many people do not make their house numbers clear. That means paramedics are wasting valuable time looking for clues as to which house is which, while shrubs and rubbish bins often obscure the numbers.

Ratby Library Quiz Answer

In an emergency, even a few minutes can mean life or death. So, make sure that your house can be quickly found. Make sure that your house number is easily visible from the street. If your house has got a name, put the house number next to it as well, so that in an emergency, the ambulances can reach you in time.

Ratby Community Library & Crow Pie Cafe A warm welcome awaits visitors to Ratby Community Library, whether you've popped in to share a gossip in our Crow Pie Cafe, or choose a book from a good selection of fiction, information books or children's readers. Why not participate in our varied group meetings or take advantage of our free internet provision? A volunteer will always be available and happy to help you find what you need. And if you would like to find a way to support our village, joining our volunteer team would be an ideal way to do so. Wendy Deeping co-ordinates our very thriving book club. February's book choice is 'Educated' by Tara Westover. This autobiography is a fascinating account of a childhood spent in the beautiful, but remote, Idaho mountains, waiting for the apocalypse – until the author decided to grasp the education denied her by her fundamentalist community. New members of the group are very welcome so contact Wendy on 0116 2390227 or just come along for a 6pm start on February 17th. Just £1 a session.

Roses are red... Anyone short of a love poem for Valentine's Day? If so, pop into Ratby Library where we have researched a selection to help keep romance alive and flourishing. Hope it earns you at least a smile. Our very popular quiz night falls on the 14th too so why not turn up at 7.30p.m? You don't have to be in love to join in either! Our new Memory Box has arrived and is based on the theme of Childhood. Each box has a varied selection of artefacts designed to stir memories of our past- old school ties, the satchel crammed with (largely undone in my case) homework and the dreaded gill of milk bottle. Ours were always stored by a radiator so tasted sour every day... Do come and explore this box of memories with other visitors or by yourself. Donations to us of books, games and DVD/CDs in good condition often arrive and mostly, go straight out for browsing and selecting. They're not part of the county library stock so are ideal for taking away, reading at leisure and either re-donating or given away elsewhere. (We don't have a fixed price for items but a cash box is in place

for anyone to add to.) Recently, however, an interesting donation came in which was so unusual we've sent it off to be catalogued as a stock item. Mr Stephen Grudgings has researched his long-standing family connection with Ratby and the result is a collection of stories, photographs and accounts of the Grudgings through many decades. Adding to the quality archive of local history held here in the library we look forward to Hinkley Library Hub returning it to us for all to read. Mindfulness is a popular movement for improving the quality of life via calm and peaceful discussion and reflection. A new course begins on Wednesday 12th February, 7-8.30pm. Details are available in the library. Who remembers the phrase 'Naughty but nice'? It's heard often when visitors order a slice or two of our delicious cakes from the busy Crow Pie Cafe here in the library. Do come and see if you agree. New books arrive frequently and are snapped up quickly – look for the display at the issue desk for our latest stock.

THE NEXT QUIZ NIGHT IS ON FRIDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2020

AN INNOVATIVE scheme where residents are rewarded for helping others in their community has been launched across Leicestershire. Time4Leicestershire is a new skills exchange initiative, which will see people carrying out good deeds for others and being rewarded in return by having somebody do a good deed for them. Part of the national Timebanking UK initiative, Time4Leicestershire is being run by the County Council’s Public Health team, who are encouraging people to sign up, register what skills they can offer and see what expertise they could benefit from. The scheme is designed to help people swap skills, connect with their community by meeting new people, contribute to their local community and receive help or support with practical tasks, such as gardening. Councillor Lee Breckon, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We want people across Leicestershire to live as healthily and independently as possible and this scheme will encourage this, regardless of age or ability. “There are many positive health benefits for people from being connected within their community and we very much welcome the Time4Leicestershire initiative as a way of helping people across the county to meet more people in their neighbourhoods, get help with some practical jobs and improve their emotional wellbeing at the same time.” Timebanking differs from volunteering, as people swap skills. For every hour of time somebody gives helping, they receive an hour’s time credit to bank and use on somebody helping them for an hour. Skills swapped can be anything from mowing a lawn or baking a cake. People don’t have to meet in person to benefit from the scheme, they can help online, for example helping someone with their CV or digitally editing photographs. The Public Health team are holding a series of information events for people to learn more about timebanking. People who sign up at the events will have their account credited with two hours, to help them get started. To find out more about the scheme and what skills people are looking for, or to see when the next information events will be taking place, visit www.time4leicestershire.org.uk or call 0116 305 0705.

Extend Project Children’s Activities We are looking forward to our Monsters Stink Holiday Club taking place during half term at Martinshaw School on 17th and 18th February. Last year a total of over 70 children came to our 2 holiday clubs in February and in the summer holidays. We’re not to be afraid, though as we will be having all the usual fun, songs, crafts and games. And I am sure that “Pie or No Pie will make a welcome return to stage! Ratby Surgery - Message from Patient Participation Group (PPG) Congratulations to Ratby Surgery - The new year begins with a very positive report from the Care Quality Commission(CQC) who undertook an inspection of the surgery in November 2019. The role of the CQC inspectors is to carry out a thorough inspection of all aspects of the quality of care provided by the surgery and rate them against the CQC criteria for Primary health care services. Without exceptions all areas were rated as good. The PPG were delighted to know that all of the hard work and care undertaken by the Doctors and all practice staff had been recognised and acknowledged.

Why not come and enjoy an afternoon of free entertainment and companionship each month, Through the year we show a selection of films specifically suited for the senior citizens. Some films are fairly recent releases but we also show some of the great old classics. The dates are as follows Friday 14 February Friday 13 March Friday 3 April Friday 8 May Friday 12 June Friday 10 July Friday 14 August Friday 11th September Friday 9th October Friday 13th November Friday11th December Tea/coffee and cakes are available after the show. For more information please contact Joan Hawkins tel: 0116 2395826

The Inspectors commented on the high uptake of child immunisations which exceeded the targets set by the World Health Organisation. The practice has worked very to make this a priority for the surgery especially for Measles, Mumps and Rubella(MMR) in light of the current epidemics.

Ratby Primary School News.... PSA Film Club

Young Voices

Many, many thanks to the PSA for organising another fantastic Film Club! The children were so excited to receive a brown paper bag full of snacks, and all we could hear for the first 20 minutes was rustling! The film this time was Pets 2, which was very funny right from the start. The children had so much fun watching the film with their friends, and their behaviour was fantastic. Tickets sold out fast because it is such a popular event in the school calendar. We’re looking forward to the next one!

Our visit from Rev Bampton

Thank you so much to Rev Bampton for his recent visit into our school. The Reading Ambassadors and had the pleasure of interviewing Rev Bampton and asked him many questions about what he likes to read. It was interesting to find out that Rev Bampton enjoys fantasy and science fiction books. He particularly likes Harry Potter, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and his favourite book from when he was young was The Rats of Nimh. We were all very impressed and all clapped when Rev Bampton recited his favourite poem: Kubla Khan by Samuel Coleridge. We cannot thank Rev Bampton enough for taking the time to visit our school and share his reading with us.

Fire Safety Talk

Wednesday 15th of January 2020, saw Ratby Primary School Young Voices choir, once again set off to Birmingham to take part in Young Voices 2020. Weeks of rehearsals had once again led to this point, singing in front of thousands of excited parents and family. The day was spent rehearsing with Ruti (a former Young Voices choir member and the winner of The Voice 2018), The Shires (UK's biggest country music act) and Tony Hadley (Lead singer of Spandau Ballet) alongside the band and Andy (Dance Master) and his group Urban Strides. As usual it was a fun-filled, noisy but fantastic day. The children sang as part of a 6000 strong choir, danced, clapped, cheered and bounced till the end! As usual behaviour, effort and joy that the children showed was a pleasure to behold, all of the teachers had a brilliant time and loved seeing the enthusiasm and excitement of everyone.

On Monday 13th January, a representative from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service came into school to talk to our Year 1 and Year 5 pupils about Fire safety. They discussed the roles of firefighters and shared videos that informed us of how deadly fire can be. We watched a video that showed how quickly a bedroom fire can spread, the children were shocked to see the damage caused in just 3 minutes! Fire alarms in homes were discussed and the children were reminded to go home and ask their parents to test them; they were also informed that this should be done at least once a month! Year 5 learnt lots of important facts about fire safety such as, closing doors can contain a fire for an extra 15 - 20 minutes and that the batteries in fire alarms should be changed once a year. Using interactive resources, we looked at potential hazards that could start fires such as overloaded plug sockets, damaged wires, unattended cooking and candles near to curtains. The children discussed the fire safety procedures for at school and then what they could do at home in the same situation including checking doors with the back on the hand, crawling if there is smoke and leaving the house through the nearest safe exit.

Now we start to prepare and look towards next year's Young Voices, a special year as it will be their 25th anniversary!

Hoax calls and arson were also discussed, the implications and consequences of these and the importance of never making hoax calls or starting fires without an adult. The children were reminded of the ‘stop, drop and roll’ technique for if our clothes catch fire and to always run cold water over any burns. They were also reminded of road safety including not being distracted by mobile phones, wearing helmets when riding bikes • Rewires • Extractor Fans • Wall Heaters • Garden Supplies and crossing roads safely. We all enjoyed the talk and I hope that we • Showers • Central Heating Wiring • Burglar Alarms have learnt some valuable lessons about fire safety! • Security Lighting • TV Points • Telephone Points • Emergency Lighting • Wall Lights • Storage • Heaters • Up-Grading Electrics To Present Regulations • Fire Alarms • Test & Inspections • Portable Appliance Testing Mid-Term Break - Monday 17th to Friday 21st February 2020
