Ratby Church Lunch Club On Sunday 3rd December 45 senior citizens were served with Christmas lunch and all the trimmings by the church family at Ratby Parish Church. It was a very joyous occasion enjoyed by all . It was particularly special as the people attending presented Rev Ros Cooper with flowers and a card to thank her for her valuable contribution to the lunch club on what was Ros’s last attendance. Mary Hollinghead who presented Ros with the flowers spoke on behalf of everyone and told her how much her time had been appreciated by everyone and how much she will be missed. The Sunday lunch club is held monthly in the Church rooms We cook a three course meal which is always well received, but most important is the chance for everyone to socialise and have a good natter!. For those people who need transport we have a small band of volunteer drivers who are happy to arrange a lift.

KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB Christmas now all over and done with for another year! We hope that everyone had a warm and comforting time and are all looking forward to 2018. We have been very cheered by the response to all our Christmas activities, including lots of craft activities for children, a very successful coffee morning on the Saturday before Christmas and, by no means least, our very own elf, Barbara, turning up for duty as a library assistant!

RATBY PARISH CHURCH at 2pm on Friday 26th January Film South PacificÂ

We thought that on this occasion, we would like to draw your attention to the amazing facility we have on offer if you are wishing to research your ancestry and family history. Free for you to use in the Library, we have subscriptions to Worldwide Ancestry and Find my Past, the latter including the 1939 Register and the British Newspaper Archive. Mike Gould, from the Kirby Muxloe History Society, has been looking at these two programmes and offers the following commentary: Ancestry – the subscription is a worldwide one, enabling records to be found from across the world. However, it defaults to the USA, so, for example, if you search for census records, it presents you with a list of US censuses. The UK records are all available, and are probably easiest to find by going to “Search on the top menu and then selecting by location and choosing England, Wales etc. as required. Find My Past – the subscription includes the 1939 Register, which is not included within the standard subscription. This is a ‘census-type’ record, which records where people were living, their date of birth (day, month and year) and occupation. Once you have found a person, the page may require you to ’unlock’ the record, but this just requires a button click to do so. The complete record is available with the exception of any details that have been declared ‘private’, due to the young age of the people concerned, but this is the same as any public access to these records. The library subscription is as good as is available without writing to the government and requesting access, for which you would need to provide a death record. The subscription also includes the British Newspaper Archives, which are easy to search, but coverage both geographically and over time is patchy. If searching for a particular area at a particular time, there is no guarantee that the relevant newspapers have been included. It is pretty expensive to buy your own subscription, so if you are interested please come along and use the programmes at your own leisure and convenience. We are looking forward to being able to expand our range of activities in 2018, including developing Wriggly Reader sessions, craft activities for children and sales of second-hand books and DVDs. We are planning to hold a Dementia Awareness Event in May and will provide more details of this as they become available, and of course a recording of BBC Leicester’s Down to Earth some time in April. Our next coffee morning will be held on Saturday 27th January and we look forward to seeing you there.

Meanwhile, our very best wishes to all for 2018!

Local Plan Consultation Launches A plan to shape housing and employment across the District of Blaby in the coming years is being consulted on with residents and local businesses. The Delivery Development Plan Document (Delivery DPD) is the second part of Blaby District Council’s overall Local Plan. The Local Plan is an important set of documents that help determine the outcome of planning applications. The Delivery DPD includes sites for new homes at Kirby Muxloe, Glenfield and Leicester Forest East. An employment site in Enderby is also proposed. A new policies map shows where development in the district should be focussed, as well as the important environmental assets that should be protected. Consultation opened on Wednesday 29 November and will close on Thursday 18 January 2018. The Council is inviting residents to view the plans and comment on the proposals within the Delivery DPD. After consultation responses are reviewed, the proposed document will be submitted to the Secretary of State for independent examination by an inspector. Once finalised, the Delivery DPD and Policies Map will be adopted and, alongside the Core Strategy will replace the Local Plan 1999. Councillor Sheila Scott, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Housing Strategy, Economic and Community Development, said: “This is a vital document for the Council as it enables us to approve and refuse planning applications on our own terms; ensuring residents get the most appropriate decisions in their area. “It also gives us the opportunity to protect and improve some of our most vital assets, as well as plan for new homes and employment sites, which are vital to help the district grow in areas we have identified will be most appropriate.” All Delivery DPD documents and details of how to make comments are available at www.blaby.gov.uk/deliverydpd. Information is also on display in local libraries and at the Council’s Narborough Offices. For further details contact the Development Strategy team via email at planning.policy@blaby.gov.uk or write to the team at Blaby District Council, Council Offices, Desford Road, Narborough, LE19 2EP.

Newbold Verdon Jazz Club December 1st saw a welcome return to Newbold of The Sussex Jazz Kings who as usual gave us an evening of great traditional jazz. Unfortunately Dave Stradwick the band leader and trumpet player was unable to play as he was ill, so Richard Church took his place and showed us what a versatile player he is. He was joined by Bernard Stutt on reed and Iain McAuley on trombone. They were backed by Pete Lay on drums, Kevin Scott on banjo and Peter Clancey on double bass and sousaphone. The first set started with a rousing version of Darktown Strutters Ball and ended with Iain vocalising Dr Jazz; always popular. After the interval when the audience enjoyed mince pies and a Christmas raffle the band continued with another varied selection of tunes and vocals, ending with One Sweet Letter from You. Jazz Nights are on the fi rst Friday of the month at 8.00pm at Newbold Verdon Social Club. Admission only £9 with drinks and snacks at club prices. Ratby Primary School News.... '

Sports News The children of Ratby Primary have been very busy over the Autumn term with lots of sporting events. The Year 5/6 boys and girls have participated in two football tournaments and did really well winning some games and beating last year’s finishing position. The Year 3/4 children competed in a new competition, Dodgeball! This was a big success and the team came 2nd! Our final fixture of the term was Year 1/2 football. The boys did really well and ended up joint winners of the tournament! We also had a record turnout for the Primary School Cross Country this term. Well done to the Year 3 boys team that finished second in the cross country league. Let's hope our success can continue into the Spring term! $

Church Service

On Thursday 21st December, the whole school went to the church, to celebrate Jesus' upcoming birthday.

Year 3 and 4 - Blue Abyss

We sang lots of Christmas songs, including our favourite 'Rock Around The Shops'. We wore Christmas jumpers to raise money for the charity Save the Children.

This term, the children in year 3 and 4 invited parents to see their Blue Abyss Exhibition. They had spent time in class designing and making underwater creatures which had bio luminescent features to share with their parents.

Foundation performed 'When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney', KS1 sang a song from the nativity 'How Life Has Changed', Year 3 and 4 shared the poem 'Twas The Night Before Christmas', Year 5 sang 'Calypso Carol' and Year 6 told the Christmas story. We all had a very good time (and a boogie at the end!).

‘senile decay’. Although this sounds very worrying, it must be remembered that initially, Dr Garfit was practicing medicine in and around the turn of the last century, a time when medicine was still in its infancy, compared with today. At first, the doctor’s surgery was held in the front room of a cottage on Main Street. The cottage was built at right angles to the road and on a small jitty, which is still there today. At one time, in the dead of night, Harry Webster, who was well known in the village, is said to have crept down the jitty and fixed a sign on the wall of the cottage (too high to be removed easily), which said ‘Harley Street’. The doctor was quite enamoured with the sign and so it stayed there until the cottage was demolished. In 1933, Dr Garfit was joined by Dr Jones and became part of the firm of Garfit and Jones, Physicians and Surgeons. Dr Jones bought ‘The Old White House’ on Main Street, and erected a large wooden shed in the front garden. Many people from Kirby Muxloe and Ratby will remember visiting the doctor’s surgery there, firstly with Doctors Garfit and Jones and later with Doctors Jones and Alexander. Eventually in 1969, a purpose-built surgery was erected at Braunstone Crossroads.

Dr Garfit was a member of both the Quorn and Atherstone hunts and it was not unusual on hunt days for him to arrive at house calls on horseback, with his trusty hunt terrier in tow. We are told that he usually arrived between 7:30 and 8:30am, tied up his horse on the gatepost outside, visited his patient and then went off on his horse to join the hunt of the day. Dr Garfit was well known in the village and very involved in community life. He was a member of the Parish Council and Chairman of the Governors at the school for many years. He was also a member of the Parochial Sanitary Committee. Charles Garfit will always be fondly remembered for his rousing performances in Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Mikado’ and for preserving the ‘right of way’ through the Old White House by walking through the hallway, front to back, once a year. Charles Corringham Garfit retired in 1944 and died in 1955, aged 84 years. Part of the information for this article comes from Old Kirby (Muxloe) by Jonathan Wilshere

Dr Garfit Charles Corringham Garfit, M.B. ChB., was Kirby’s first full time Doctor. From 1882 until Dr Garfit arrived, the village had been served for just three days per week, by a Doctor Kelly from Desford and Doctor Harris from Anstey. At times, Doctor Wright from Newtown Unthank also attended the village, generally arriving with his horse and cart, but with a horse and sleigh in the winter. Charles Corringham Garfit was born in Delamere, Cheshire in 1871. He was the son of Charles Taylor Garfit, a land agent and his wife, Ada Maria Corringham. He had three younger sisters, Ada, Helen and Kate. He gained an Exhibition to Hulme Hall, Manchester University, to study medicine, qualifying in 1893. He came to Kirby Muxloe as a single man in 1897, and lodged with Mrs Crawford at ‘Ashleigh’, Station Road. Within the year, he returned to Cheshire to marry Ruth Linnell, and came back to the village to set up home at ‘Inglewood’, Station Road, the house next door to ‘Ashleigh’. Dr Garfit is well remembered in the village and his reputation is legendary. We are told numerous stories of his rusty scissors, profuse use of iodine, unhygienic habits and liberal applications of ointment. It is also said that he more than once removed tonsils from a child on the kitchen table. His favourite cause of death for anyone over the age of 60 was

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Budget Background Our financial position remains extremely challenging. By planning ahead, we’ve saved £178m since 2010 and reduced our budget shortfall. But growing service pressures and uncertainty about national funding mean that demand continues to outstrip income.

Ratby Post Office Changes to Ratby Post Office We recently asked you for your views about our plans to change the above Post Office to one of our new-style local branches.

This is placing vastly increased strain on our children’s and adult social care. Our proposals recognise this and include an extra £40m growth – mainly for these two areas.

Your new-look Post Office is scheduled to open at the current location on Thursday 11th January 2018 at 13:00. To make this change happen, the branch was closed for refurbishment on Friday 29 December 2017 at 12:30 however the following branches will be happy to provide customers with Post Office services during this period. Should these dates change, posters will be displayed in branch to let customers know.

Over the next four years, we’re planning to save £54m. To try to limit the cuts we have to make to services, we’re proposing a Council Tax rise of 3.99 per cent – this includes two per cent for adult social care.

• Groby Post Office, 32 Leicester Road, Groby, Leicester, LE6 0DJ • Leicester Forest East, 18 Hinckley Road, Leicester, LE3 3GH When the new branch opens, customers will benefit from a newly modernised Post Office service and longer opening hours: Monday – Saturday 08:00 – 20:30 Sun 09:30 – 18:30

The County Councils Latest budget proposals

Transforming services and making efficiency savings means the council is much leaner. Selling services to other organisations – plus investing in property – is generating income which is ploughed back into services. And by doing more with partners, and leading calls for fair funding from the government, we’re doing everything we can to lever more funding.

Did You Know- £178m has been saved by the council since 2010

Newtown Linford Choral Society: A Concert For Peace at Ratby Church As everybody knows, the year 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. All previous wars were eclipsed by the scale of its destruction, and in the decade that followed it became known as ‘The War to end all Wars’ - sadly that has not been the case. The Choral Society’s concert on Friday 2 and Sat 3 February 2018 in Ratby Church will reflect hopes that have been expressed for a lasting peace in the world. Orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Fortissimo Quartet and virtuoso cellist Maxine McGinnes. There will also be a professional soprano soloist Bethan Williams, and Choral Society soloists Clive Hilton and John Williams. One of the works to be performed will be ‘Eternal Light’, which is a Requiem composed in 2008 by Howard Goodall.. He has stated that his aim in composing this lovely piece of music aim was to provide solace for the grieving. In addition to winning plaudits for his classical compositions Howard Goodall has also won many awards for music that he has composed for TV and radio, including The Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, and Mr Bean! Other music to be performed at the concert will include the Prayer of St Francis (by Allen Pote), Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace (Wesley), extracts from The Armed Man (by Karl Jenkins), and two anthems by John Rutter. Tickets at ÂŁ10 (ÂŁ5 for children under 18 and students) will be available from 1 December from Newtown Linford store, Ratby Post Office, Peter and Iris on 01530 243822, or online at either www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/15501 or via a link on the Choral Society’s Facebook page.

The proposed changes are part of a longer term strategy to strengthen the support given to our children and young people in care, bolster fostering recruitment and improve training for existing carers. The move would cost £260,000 and is part of wider plans to save £3 million by recruiting more in-house foster carers, ensuring that Leicestershire’s children in care can remain in the county. Placing a child with an independent fostering agency costs around £15,000 more than with an in-house carer. While we know that prospective foster carers are motivated by the desire to help children and young people rather than money, we also recognise that fostering needs to be financially viable for people. Councillor Ivan Ould, cabinet member for children and families said “We have set ourselves some tough recruitment targets in foster care recruitment this year, and in order to make sure we’re attracting the foster carers of tomorrow, we’re proposing to increase the rates that a first time foster carer receives, and make sure that our current carers at that level also receive an uplift in their fees. The wider plans would aim to strengthen support to vulnerable children in care (and those that could be taken into care) alongside a further developed package of support and training for foster carers. The proposals have been put together following consultation with other local authorities, comparisons with independent fostering agencies and discussions with current foster carers about the fees, support and training they receive. The proposal will be discussed at cabinet on 9 January. If given the go ahead, the next step would be to consult with foster carers and members of the public on the planned fee changes. Prospective foster carers can visit www.fosteringleicestershire.com or call 0116 305 0505 for more information and an informal chat with the council’s fostering recruitment team.

Come along to see us and to support this local event.

At one time every family’s diet included bread which relied on a constant supply of fresh flour. So virtually every village had a mill of some sort, a watermill if there was a suitable stream, or if not, a windmill was placed on an elevated position where its sails could catch the wind. At their peak in 1835 there were believed to be 152 mills in Leicestershire, and many were locally such as Woodhouse Eaves, Markfield, Mountsorrel, Shepshed etc. Mark has tried to gather together all the photographic images that have survived A and has also made a collection of milling stories. He knows of the existence of many mills but as far as he knows their images have been lost.

FUTURE EVENTS Monday 19th March 2018 brief AGM followed by a 1970 film “Leicestershire a Heritage at Risk”, at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30pm. You will not be surprised that most of the issues raised are still the same today. It is a delightful film as it brings back memories of familiar sights 48 years ago of rural Leicestershire and Charnwood Forest. The meeting will conclude with a brief discussion of the issues raised led by the CPRE.

Local Letter to Ratby Parish Council

If I may I’ll take you on a 8-picture journey around this area of the park, which I walk daily, sometimes twice daily.

Pathways around Ferndale Park

I think users deserve to have these footpaths properly maintained and restored to their original specification, which would require the acquisition and application of hard-core to infill between restored edgings after first applying vegetation killer. The pathways, then at their original and intended width would provide a suitable walking surface for all users.

I read the piece in the December 2017 edition of Your Local re the layering the various hedgerows around the village. Whilst this is a laudable project, and when completed would certainly enhance appearance, there is something much more practical the parish council might consider. The footpaths around the left hand side of Ferndale Park, originally constructed with edgings infilled with hard-core, have not been maintained for some considerable time, probably in excess of 12 years and certainly not since my wife and I moved from Church Lane and then to our current address via Six Acre Close.

The result is that the footpaths have become narrower as the grass on both sides have overgrown the edgings. But much more importantly, with the slightest rain they become quagmires. These various pathways are used regularly, not just by dog walkers but by residents, including schoolchildren and students from Brookvale High School and Groby Community College, who regularly use the pathways shown in pictures 1, 2, 3 & 4 to get to and from the school / college campus to get to the bottom end of the village i.e. Taverner Drive, the bottom end of Tyler Road and the various roads and Closes off.

I await the council’s comments.

Heidi said: “I’ve joined a gym and started exercise classes and I feel so much better exercising now I don’t smoke. I’ve got so much more energy and I can run without my chest hurting.”

HERE IS a desperate choice: if you had to give up one forever, which would it be?

After a great deal of heartsearching, it seems we are split nearly down the middle, with 53 per cent of us letting chocolate go, and 47 per cent letting cheese go.

So – cheese wins! As one senior food analyst explains,

‘Cheese is a menu staple in the vast majority of homes.’

But although the survey, by Mintel analysts, found that we love cheese the consumer best, that does not mean we don’t love chocolate in fact, we are buying more of it each year. This coming year we are forecast to get through nearly half a million tons of chocolate, and 785 million tons of cheese (most of it cheddar).

HEALTHMATTERS What’s Your New Year’s Resolution? I hope you had a lovely Christmas. It is the time of year again where we look at ourselves and think what should I change and do differently this year. For many of us it may be something simple such as staying positive or giving up something. Nationally around 7 million of us will make a New Year’s resolution to improve an aspect of our health. After the overindulgence of Christmas, most people see the New Year as an opportunity for self-improvement including myself. The most common New Year’s resolutions to do with health are losing weight, getting fit and quitting smoking. There are so many ways to lose weight, but essentially it boils down to calorie intake and calories burnt. As long as the calories you eat are less than the calories burnt, you will lose weight. You should take time and count the calories in your food in order to ensure that you stay within your limit. Dieting reduces your calorie intake and exercise increases your calories burnt. By doing both you have a greater chance of losing weight. A couple of tips for dieting have to be to try and fill up with fibre. Eating food with lots of fibre will help you feel full for longer, so you’re more likely to stick to your calorie limit. We spend on average about a third of our day at work, so it makes sense to consider what we eat during working hours also. By getting fit you can also lose weight. Walking is one of the easiest and most effective ways of increasing your activity. Things you can do to increase your walking are: Find a walking partner or join a walking group. Walk up and down stairs and escalators instead of taking the lift, or get off the lift a few floors early and use the stairs. Get off public transport a stop before your destination and walk the rest of the way. Ditch the car, if you need to drive to work, try to park further away from your destination and walk the rest of the way.

mornings. Your body’s defences will also benefit. There is some limited research suggesting that moderate exercise can strengthen the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of coughs and colds. However, more research is needed in this area. If the shorter days are affecting your mood, being active can improve your sense of wellbeing. You may be tempted to eat more during the colder months. Exercising will help you manage your weight better and keep your body in shape. A key thing to consider when exercising is to do something that you enjoy. If going to the gym does not interest you, then take up an activity or sport such as badminton to keep yourself active. In keeping healthy, one of the best New Year’s Resolutions has to be stopping smoking. There is a vast amount of research and evidence to say that stopping smoking will ensure a healthier and better life. If you would like to have any more information about anything mentioned above, please call us on 01162387353 or pop in to The Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe where one of our highly trained pharmacist will be happy to help.

As we are now in winter and temperatures have dropped, you may be tempted to hang up your exercise gear and hibernate. Don’t, keep going and keep exercising.

Everyone at The Village Pharmacy would like to wish all our customers a Very Happy New Year.

If you feel that going outdoors is just too much, then exercise at home, simple exercises can be done at home using things around the home. E.g. Walking up and down the stairs.
