January - time for the gym
LFE Film Evenings
UP TO A million of us will join a gym next month. Up to 800,000 of us will have given it up by February. But before you return to the couch, why not consider the following:
LFE Film Evenings will be showing on Thursday 7 February “Swimming with Men”.
• Only do exercises that you enjoy. Have fun, and nothing else! Don’t torture yourself on the cross trainers if you prefer salsa dancing. Your endorphins will still be released, leaving you stimulated, inspired and generally better. • Start small. Okay, you like swimming, but why aim for 20 lengths your first time in the pool? You will never go back. Start instead with just two lengths, and then reward yourself with a coffee. Next time do three, and so on. Always end with a reward. • Go at the same time, on the same days. Make it a part of your week. You will meet the same people, and it will begin to feel natural. Make it a habit. • Be friendly. A lot of people are intimidated when they first go to a gym. So, the first week, smile at people, the second week try saying hello, and gradually you will get on friendly terms with enough of them so that you feel comfortable.
A bittersweet British comedy, this film is hailed as ‘The Full Monty in speedos’. Eric is a middle-aged man suffering a mid-life crisis, who starts to think his wife, Heather is having an affair so he moves out of their home. He finds new meaning in his life as part of an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronised swimming team. Against all the odds, they end up training for the world championships in Milan.
• Don’t forget the spiritual. Away from the gym, give yourself time for your inner, spiritual well-being as well on a daily basis.
• Keep your mind active. Read books or join an evening class. Do puzzles. Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. • Be creative. Can their coach, Susan whip them into shape? Will they paint, sew, Make the space around you more beautiful in some way - decorate, master the flower, the pyramid and the spinning circle in knit, or even just add a vase of flowers. time? More importantly, can Eric win Heather back with the • Give some things up. help of his newfound confidence? As well as putting good things into your life, take some less-good things OUT of your life. What in your life is draining your time and energy, and giving little in return? Get rid of it!

SHARED NEIGHBOURHOOD WARDEN Happy New Year! Ratby Parish Council is pursuing the idea of sharing a Neighbourhood Warden with Groby Parish Council. This Neighbourhood Warden would be sponsored by both Parish Councils and we are looking for contributions from Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council and Police & Crime Commissioner. This is a project which we hope will curb the anti-social behaviour element which occurs in both villages. This will also include patrolling the villages to try and stamp out the inconsiderate parking, dog fouling etc., problems which are prevalent in both villages. It is hoped the residents will support this initiative and should any of you have any questions etc., please contact the Parish Council, either by telephone (0116 239 0167) or by email: ratbypcouncil@btconnect.com or by the Contact form which is on the Council’s website.

iMPOWER – Most Productive Council The County Council has been named as the most productive council in the country for the second year in a row according to a table compiled by consultancy firm iMPOWER. The “iMPOWER iNDEX” defines productivity as outcome value per pound spent and draws on 20 publicly available data sets and 49 outcome indicators. This is a great achievement by the Council and I like the leader of the Council would like to pay particular tribute to our staff for their hard work. I would also like to recognise the personal role which Byron Rhodes the Deputy Leader has played in leading our transformation programme, which has been instrumental in this achievement. I agree with both the leader and with Byron that if we were to receive fair funding, we would in all probability also be the highest performing council in the country.
Successful bid generates extra £14m for city and county Leicester and Leicestershire one of 15 areas taking part in national pilot Major plans to unlock an extra £14m for public services across Leicester and Leicestershire have been given the thumbs up. Secretary of State James Brokenshire announced in early December that the area was one of 15 chosen to take part in a national Government pilot. The money - generated from business rates – will be used by 10 organisations to manage growing demand for children’s social care and homelessness support, provide
Currently, 50 per cent of business rates collected by councils must be paid to the treasury but under the national pilot, areas can spend 75 per cent of new rates locally, releasing more funds. Plans are still being finalised but the money is set to contribute to: • Reducing demand on children’s social care by investing in services to avoid children entering into care, stabilise familybased placements and support young people to live more independently • Developing online and re-designing services - to improve efficiency and free up money to be spent on front line services • Exploring how to reduce the growing cost of homelessness and expanding work tackling fraud • Boosting new jobs and the economy by contributing to proposals for new road infrastructure and improvements to the city and town centres The money will be available from business rates collected in 2019/20. The 10 organisations behind the bid are: Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, Blaby District Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Harborough District Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Melton Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council.
Residents and businesses are urged to have their say on Leicestershire County Council’s latest budget proposals. People can find out more about the four-year
plan and send in their views until 20 January. Go to the County Councils website and type in have your say to take part. The proposals include £74m, required because rising demand for social care and special educational needs and disability (SEND) support services, combined with inflation, is set to push up costs by £94m. The savings are made up of £34m of detailed savings, a plan to reduce SEND costs by £20m and a £20m gap. They also feature a council tax rise of 3.99 per cent - generating £12m next year, to be invested in supporting vulnerable people. Taking tough decisions and saving £200m since 2010 means we’re in a relatively strong position, especially compared to other councils, but this can’t go on forever. Our four-year proposals show that pressure is building on both our revenue budget - used for running costs - and our capital budget one-off spend to buy or build things and invest in infrastructure. The plan sets out that with savings, we can balance our books for the next two years but then shortfalls arise. And the question mark over future government funding could exacerbate this gap. Now we want to hear your views. The consultation closes on 20 January and I would encourage you to have your say. The proposals for 2019-23 include: • Spending an extra £94m on services – due to growing demand for social care and special educational needs and disability support (SEND) and inflation costs • £74m savings, including: > Reducing SEND costs by investing a one-off £30m to create more school places locally > Recruiting more in-house foster carers to reduce expensive placements

Storm Trooper Brings a Smile to Ratby and Groby on Christmas Day. Well it could only happen in Ratby and Groby a Strom Trooper seen walking through the villages on Christmas Day bringing a smile to people. Motorists were flashing their lights and sounding their horns, pedestrians were smiling and giving him the thumbs up and children were amazed. Well to those residents who wondered where he came from. I can confirm that it was my son Loz O’shea who lives in Groby he has always been a joker and thought it would bring a few smiles out on Christmas day.
The final budget proposals will be considered by the cabinet on 8 February and agreed by the county council at its meeting on 20 February.

I have been asked what the compliance has been along the A50 at Bradgate Hill in Groby since the average speed cameras were introduced. I can confirm that between 2nd November to 12th December 2018, 1,290 notices have been issued to vehicles passing through Groby (1,221) and Oadby (69). During this same period an estimated 2,100,680 vehicles have passed through the camera site.

Are your children gamblers?
The Big Garden Birdwatch Saturday 26 January to Monday 28 January
HERE IS a sobering fact: more children have placed bets in the past week than have drunk alcohol, smoked or taken drugs. Such are the findings from an audit by the Gambling Commission.
important insight into how our wildlife is faring. The Big Garden Birdwatch alerted us to the decline in song thrush numbers. Back in 1979 song thrushes comfortably occupied the number ten spot, but numbers in gardens have declined by around 70% over the last 40 years, and they have dropped to 27th in the rankings.
It also found that one in seven 11to16-year-olds bet regularly, staking an average of £16 a week. And those who start betting young are more like to have issues as adults, warns the charity Gamcare. The sad truth is that gambling has never been easier, with online outlets available 24 hours a day. And once a young person accesses them, the sites bombard them with marketing prompts for ‘boosted’ odds and ‘free bets’. Youthsite, a research organisation for 16-to 30-year olds estimates that more than 100,000 students are in debt due to gambling, with one in four of those owing more than £10,000. Although the Government has promised to (eventually) reduce the FOBT (Fixed Odds Betting Terminal) maximum stakes from £100 to £2, there are fears that the reduction will itself only increase the attraction of betting online.

Did you know that the Big Garden Birdwatch started out as an event for children? Back in 1979, the RSPB joined forces with BBC’s Blue Peter and called on children to let us know what birds they saw in their garden. Hundreds took up the call, and in those pre-digital days, dutifully posted in their findings. The early signs of success were there, with the RSPB team faced with an impressive 34 mail bags full of post to sort. The popularity of the Birdwatch has grown yearon-year and now forty years later it is the world’s largest wildlife survey, with around half a million regularly taking part. It is one of the biggest citizen science events around, as borne out by the stats. • Over 8 million hours have been spent watching garden birds since the Big Garden Birdwatch began in 1979. • The total number of birds counted as part of the Big Garden Birdwatch since 1979, is more than 130 million • In 2018, a staggering 8 million birds were counted during the Big Garden Birdwatch It’s an impressive amount of data, and the great thing about 40 years of the Big Garden Birdwatch is that we now have four decades of comparative results. The findings provide an
It’s a change that Ian recognises in his own experiences of the Birdwatch: “I always enjoy seeing a song thrush and love listening their song. They were always in the top ten seen during Big Garden Birdwatch but more recently they have dropped out, and we don’t see so many.” In recent years the Big Garden Birdwatch has expanded beyond birds. Since 2014 we’ve asked people about other wildlife that visits their garden. Through this, we now know that only 25% of people see hedgehogs in their garden at let one a month. This year we’re asking people to tell us about their sightings of badgers, foxes, grey squirrels, red squirrels, muntjac deer, roe deer, frogs and toads. The Birdwatch is also not without its oddities and sometimes some very unusual visitors turn up, including an American robin in Putney, a black-throated thrush on the Isle of Bute, and a common rosefinch in Yorkshire. In 2014, a yellowrumped warbler, which usually spends winter in South America, turned up in a garden in Durham. Less unusual but no less thrilling was the explosion of waxwings visiting gardens in 2017. Usually found feasting on berries in Scandinavia, these winter visitors come to the UK when there is a lack of food in their native countries. In 2017, waxwings were seen in around 11 times more gardens compared with the last couple of years.

A Happy New Year from the Patient Participation Group(PPG) Coping with Colds & Flu- NHS frontline services, at this time of year, face extreme pressures from those seeking treatment for winter ailments. We can all do our bit by choosing the most appropriate source of support. We shouldn’t underestimate the important role of self-care. If you are generally fit and healthy then you can usually manage the symptoms of cold or flu without seeing your GP. The main symptoms of winter cold and flu bugs are coughing, sneezing, blocked nose, sore throat, headache and a slight temperature. If these are the only symptoms you have then you can visit your local pharmacy who can advise you on how to manage your symptoms and offer over the counter medicines.
6th-24th FEBRUARY This year there will be over 70 venues and the festival will feature a record number of shows and events. Of course, some of the biggest names in comedy will appear (including Arthur Smith, Johnny Vegas, Zoe Lyons, Jason Manford, Nish Kumar, Tom Allen, Dave Gorman, Jo Brand & Russell Howard) but we’re also proud to present some of the best new and emerging comedians as part of the festival as well as some exclusive events which can’t be seen anywhere else. In 2019 we’ve launched The UK Kids’ Comedy Festival – a new sister festival for families and children which will run throughout the Festival. With an ever growing programme of events aimed at families and children now seems the perfect time to launch this brand new festival. Leicester Comedy Festival is produced by registered charity Big Difference Company and our aims are to support new & emerging talent, celebrate British comedy and support comedians, promoters and venues to put on the best shows and events. We look forward to seeing you in February!

Colds and Flu are caused by viruses therefore antibiotics do not help. Most of these bugs will run their course without any serious harm. You should seek medical advice for cold or flu if you have a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, or if you have a very high temperature as well as an unusually severe headache/abdominal/chest pain. Children can be treated using some over the counter medicines, ask your pharmacy for what is suitable for the age of your child. If your child is having additional symptoms such as vomiting and has a rash with a fever, or they stop drinking and are lethargic, or your child’s fever does not respond to Paracetamol or Ibuprofen then see the doctor. Help prevent colds and flu spreading by using a tissue when coughing or sneezing then throwing it away as soon as possible, wash your hands regularly and also have a flu jab every year if you are eligible. On -line Services are a very practical way of saving your time and that of the practice. Why not sign up to the on line service the practice has to offer, these services enable patients to order prescriptions and make appointments. The practice staff are very helpful to those patients who need help in accessing this service. New Patient Registrations- we would like to re-assure patient that Ratby Surgery is open for and accepting new patients. There seems to be some confusion surrounding new patient registration, the PPG wish to confirm the practice is open for business.
Anyone For Tennis (and much more) It has been a busy year for Gynsill Tennis Club. There is social tennis at the club 3 times a week which is really enjoyable. Also the men, ladies and juniors have all been playing in matches in the local leagues. As well as playing tennis the club members have been on a walking weekend, had a boules tournament and bbq in the tennis club car park, a quiz night and enjoyed a pie night at Beaumanor Hall. The club had a stall at the Anstey Gala (you may have seen us there). Everybody that came to our stall had fun trying to hit tennis balls through different holes with prizes for the best scores. Gynsill Tennis Club is a friendly and welcoming club. If you are thinking about starting to play tennis, haven’t played for a while or are a regular player why not come down and see us. The club is on the corner of Gynsill Close and Gorse Hill. Saturday afternoon is club afternoon. You can also visit the club website www.gynsilltennis.club or contact our Head Coach, Adam Charlton, at charltontennis@yahoo.co.uk

Ratby Primary School News....
A Child’s War
Church Service and Christmas Jumper Day
Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about World War 2. We have had the most extraordinary time as we have learnt about evacuation, rationing, the Blitz and so much more. One of our favourite experiences has been our World War 2 day. On our first day of starting our Child’s War topic, we dressed up as an evacuee for the day (a child who moved from the city to the countryside during the war to stay safe from the bombs). We made some scrumptious food including: carrot cookies, potato cakes and raison scones - they were very nice! We also had the most amazing time cracking codes and sewing up old clothes.

Sports News..
New Year New Start!
There is so much to look back on and feel proud of this half-term. Our boys in the Rice Bowl just missed out on the quarter-finals, watching the lads giving 100% to the team was fantastic to see. Both dodgeball teams from Year 3/ 4 and 5/6 gave it their absolute all to win but just missed out on a trophy by half a point. Ratby Primary School Sports Leaders have been preparing for next terms personal challenge and making sure everyone stays physically active during playtimes. Finally, a huge thank you to the students from Brookvale, who came to Year 4 and held a Sports Fun Day, the children loved the activities.
Volunteers required for vital roles in helping to support older people Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the country and inspires and enables 20,000 volunteers to give their skills, experience, energy and time to help people in need in hospitals, at home and in the community. Locally in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we support approximately 2,000 older people per year with our services. These services include helping older people who have been discharged from hospital to rebuild their confidence and remain independent once they return home, providing transport to help with shopping, attending hospital appointments or support with social opportunities. In addition our volunteers provide valuable company and friendship as well as making sure that the older person is safe and well.
Year 3 Visit to Groby United Reform Church
Year 3 Visit to Groby United Reform Church Year 3 really enjoyed visiting the Groby United Reformed Church on Tuesday 4th December. They went on a long journey to Bethlehem and spoke to a shepherd, a lady travelling from Nazareth, a king and three angels. They found mysterious objects along the way and used these to uncover facts about the nativity story. Finally, the classes competed in a quiz about what they had found out which we all enjoyed! Thank you so much to ‘Open the Book’ for bringing the Christmas story to life.
Teresa Gibbs – Commissioned Services Operations Manager for Royal Voluntary Service: “The demand for our services is always increasing and as a result of this we are looking to recruit more volunteers to allow us to continue to offer the support to local older people. Our volunteers make a significant and positive difference to older people’s lives and without their incredible contribution we would certainly not be able to provide the current level and range of services.”
Chris Cordle, a retired NHS medical psychologist from Leicester, is a Royal Voluntary Service volunteer. She delivers the charity’s Home from Hospital service which helps settle older people back into home after a hospital stay. She says: “I missed the satisfaction of working with people - I loved that part of my job. Volunteering has filled that gap. I enjoy working with older people, hearing their stories and helping them to achieve their aims. Much of my career was about motivating and helping people, and that’s what I’m still doing now. I really enjoy encouraging people to achieve their personal targets. It’s very satisfying.”
We would really like to hear from local people who may be interested in this very worthwhile volunteering opportunity, a couple of hours per week really can make a real difference to the quality of older people’s lives. KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB
2019 A short, quick but heartfelt message this time to wish all our Library users and volunteers the very best for the New Year. 2018 seems in retrospect to have been a pretty tough year across the world, not least in terms of deteriorating relationships between individuals, nations and races, and a frequent lack of respect and courtesy in the way in which people communicate with each other. We can only hope and work for greater understanding and tolerance in 2019. In our own very small way, in this little village, we work to promote such feelings in the Library and, through the provision of community space and events, to help bring us all together and to combat the effects of loneliness and disengagement. So – here’s to a very happy, peaceful and engaging 2019 to all!
Forthcoming Events In the spirit of promoting mutual understand-
ing and respect, do see if you can find the time to pop in to the Library on Saturday February 9th to celebrate the Chinese New Year, with demonstrations of Chinese crafts, food and relaxation. The event lasts from 11.00 – 2.00 (the Library itself will be open from 10.00 – 1.00 as usual) and we look forward to seeing you. Likewise, tickets for the quiz are now available in the Library – Friday 1st March at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall. Tickets are going like hotcakes, so hurry along if you are interested. Tickets are £10.00 each, to include a fish and chip supper (bring your own drinks and glasses!).
Community Managed Status We hope this year to gain full CommunityManaged Library status, assuming that the necessary legal changes are adopted. It has been a frustrating time to wait for all the machinations to be completed, but we hope we are almost there. We will have an event to celebrate this – details to be decided when (and if) we have a date.
January Coffee Morning
And finally – our next coffee morning is on
Saturday 26th January. Louis’ chocolate ganache and raspberry cakes were a great success in December, so we shall be repeating those. Children’s craft activities will also be available – a morning out for the
family. We look forward to seeing you.

Newbold Verdon Jazz Club Ratby Senior Citizens Cinema Club
December 4th saw Dave Rance’s Rockin’ Chair Band making their first appearance at the club. The band whose line-up included Dave Rance on trumpet, the popular Richard Leach on trombone and John Percival on clarinet lived up to its reputation of being a bit ‘different’. They played some excellent traditional jazz interspersed with Dave’s amusing jokes and several entertaining pieces mainly supplied by John who played a couple of tunes on the saw; not something you hear every day. Together with a Christmas Raffle and mince pies in the interval the audience went home after having a good evening. It was good to see several new faces again and we hope they will continue to come.

Closure order issued on Hinckley House Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council takes a positive stand on Drugs being used in its properties. The occupier and visitors have been banned from a council house in Hinckley after a cannabis grow was found in the loft. The drug was revealed after the fire services were called following reports of a fire at an address in Henry Street, Hinckley in December. The fire service discovered evidence of a cannabis grow inside the property and reported it to the police. A temporary anti-social behaviour closure notice was subsequently issued on Thursday 13 December by the Borough Council, in partnership with the police, banning all visitors to the property. The following day, the council obtained a full closure order from Leicester Magistrates Court. The order prevents any unauthorised person from entering the premises for a three month period. The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 enables the council or police to close premises which are being used, or likely to be used, to commit serious nuisance or where there is or likely to be disorderly, criminal or offensive behaviour on the premises. The council is now considering its options for further action. Madeline Shellard, the council's ASB and Tenancy Manager, said: “Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council do not tolerate council properties being used for immoral and illegal purposes and action will be taken against any persons involved. Residents living in the Borough have the right to live in safety and peace without having to tolerate this behaviour.” A copy of the closure order has been displayed outside the house and anyone breaching the order could be arrested and, if found guilty, could face a punishment of up to 51 weeks in prison and/or an unlimited fine.

£275,000, offering community projects in the parished areas of the borough the chance to bid for grants of up to 50 per cent of the total project cost. These grants fund a wide variety of projects such as play areas, community buildings, new pathways, heritage trails, and sports facilities. The maximum grant available to each area ranges from £12,000 to £22,000 according to the parish’s population size, with a maximum grant of £12,000 available to individual projects in each parished area. Grants for 2019/20 will be provided on the following basis: • Projects must be within a parished area of the borough • Maximum grant of £12,000 per project • Maximum of 50 per cent of total project costs funded • All works must be completed within the financial year • Projects must demonstrate that they meet the council's corporate aims and that they are of community benefit Councillor Kevin Morrell, the Executive Member responsible for Rural Communities and Environment at the Borough Council, said: “As in previous years I would like to see these grants spread as wide as possible, with special emphasis on the smaller organisations as well as parish councils." Applications are invited from now until the closing date of 8 February 2019. Application packs will automatically be sent to parish and town councils. Further copies are available by contacting the Green Spaces team on Tel. 01455 255707 or by emailing greenspaces@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk
Free parking on Saturdays this January NEW YEAR shopping in Hinckley will be given a boost this year with free car parking in selected town centre car parks on Saturdays. Hinckley & Bosworth Council will be allowing free parking on Lower Bond Street, Druid Street, Alma Road, Holliers Walk, Trinity Vicarage Road and Thorneycroft Road car parks every Saturday, in January to thank shoppers for their loyalty and to increase trade for shops and businesses.
The free parking offer applies from 9.00am on Saturday 12, 19 and 25 January. Shoppers are reminded that parking is free in all council run car parks on Sundays throughout the year. Executive Member for Town and Urban Communities at the Borough Council, Cllr Miriam Surtees said: “We are delighted to be able to extend our free parking offer in January to continue to support town centre businesses during what can often be a quieter shopping month. We trust that this free offer will encourage residents and visitors to continue to shop local, visiting our local stores and market plus our cinema and restaurants.”
Bogus Gas Workmen We have received reports of alleged gas workmen visiting properties in Ratby on the basis of inspecting homes due to new gas mains being installed in the road. Having investigated this due to the fact that workmen do not need to enter properties as the meters are on the outside of houses and having checked with both Cadent and their sister company Triio, no works are due on this particular road. The nearest is Station Road, Ratby but not yet. Also, no warning letters of works were sent to residents. We both advise that should workmen call unexpectedly at your property you should not let them in until you have taken their ID badge from them and ask them to wait outside and then contact the company to verify their credentials.
Former Councillor Rob Fraser We have been notified that former County and Borough Councillor Rob Fraser passed away on Boxing Day. Rob served Ratby from 1991 until 2013. We would both like to wish you all a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards
Chris & Ozzy Working for you.

Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hi everyone and a VERY Happy New Year to you all, well we’ve had a very busy holiday period with the kids Christmas party being a real success we had a special performance from Encore Cheer and Dance and we managed to raise £75 for Wishes4Kids, a big thank you to Ken and Avril Hunnybun and Nicola Butler for their hard work in making the night a real success. Our New Years Eve party was a great success and it was great to see so many families down and able to celebrate the New Year together with not only friends but family as well, thanks to Vaughan and Yvonne Murray, Kelly Holt and Tasha Hames for their help. 2018 has been a trying time with a lot of stabilizing and clearing out dead wood and we have started building foundations for the future, without these foundations in place the club will never be able to grow and improve which will give our community better facilities and a better environment for us all to use. Unfortunately any foundations that had been previously laid have sadly been taken away due to miss management and people abusing their position within the club, onwards and upwards we are not there yet but we are getting there. On the sporting front we have a lot to look forward to in 2019 now the football section
has been sorted out we will go from strength to strength both on and off the pitch. If there are any teams looking to join the purple revolution for season 2019-2020 please get in touch, we have first class facilities for 5v5, 7v7, 9v9 and 11 aside we also have these pitches for hire including our floodlights, please get in touch if any of this interests you and if your team is looking for a new home then contact me in strictest confidence. Cricket is obviously pre season but be sure to look out for up coming winter training details and junior clubs and coaching and not forgetting the All Star Cricket again which was a massive success last summer. There is one thing I’m looking forward to though and that is when Ratby play Kirby who due to a promotion and a relegation find themselves in the same league they should be 2 great games, you can’t beat a bit of a local derby. Our Archery section The Burroughs Hill Bowmen will be outside soon practicing and if anyone is interested in joining them please contact me and I will pass your details to them.
Please remember that we offer FREE Wi-Fi and are available to hire for parties, functions, clubs, seminars etc.
Later this month we have Marky T performing his SKA show which is in homage to SKA favourites such as Specials and Madness to name but 2 top SKA bands.
Regards, Garry

PLEASE NOTE: our next meeting will be on Tuesday 15 January 2019. In a change to our published programme, Gay Evans will talk about “A tale of wealth, separation, murder and a hanging” – the history of Staunton Harold Hall.
The Towers ‘The Towers’ was a large example of Victorian architecture at its best. The house, which will still be remembered by some people in the village, was situated in the area now called Towers Drive. The house was tall, with towers and turrets, large chimneys and decorative trim in many areas. There was an abundant use of stained glass on its many windows. It was surrounded by a brick wall, interspersed with smaller round towers. Two of the original towers and parts of the wall can still be seen at the bottom of Towers Drive, near to the entrance of Station Drive. The house had an aysymetrical design featured in many Victorian houses and there are some properties of a fairly similar design still to be seen in Kirby Fields today. The entrance to the grounds was flanked by two gatehouses of a quite substantial size. The house was originally named Forest Ville, which later became Forest Villa and then some time later, The Towers. It was built around 1879, close to the railway station, which made it convenient for business men travelling into Leicester for work. The original owners were the Goode brothers, actually twins, who came from Cattows Normanton, near Heather. They were landowners and also owned a property named Heather Hall. In 1881, we find James Bakewell Goode, then aged 66, living in Forest Ville with three servants. The brothers were said to have been eccentric and had grand ideas to build a road over the already established railway line in order to reach The Dell. They had private means so could easily support themselves without work. However, by 1891, the brothers had moved back to Cattows Normanton. By 1899, the house had changed hands twice and around 1900, the house was
sold to Herbert Sutton, a gown and mantle manufacturer. Herbert, together with his wife Henrietta and daughter Phyliss, lived in the house until his demise in 1898. At some point, Herbert built a private gateway from Forest Ville onto the station platform; the gate posts still exist and can still be seen in a garden on Station Drive. Henrietta and her daughter continued to live at Forest Ville and by 1902, Henrietta had married Arthur Ernest Harding, a hosiery manufacturer. As time went by, Arthur also became a coal merchant, which was particularly convenient as the station wharf was located next to the grounds of his house. It is said that he used to stand in the windows and watch the coal being loaded to and from the train. Mrs Sutton Harding, as she was known, outlived both husbands and is thought to have owned the house until 1949, although records show that the house was put up for sale in 1946. At some point after, the house was renamed “The Towers”. During WWII, the house was occupied by American airmen based at Braunstone Municipal and Desford Aerodromes. The American airmen had lots of sweets and chewing gum that were very popular with the village children. They also had nylon and silk stocking for the ladies. In wartime Britain, nylon/silk stockings were scarce and most women had bare legs, even in the winter, sometimes drawing in a black seam line, then the height of fashion, down the back of their legs with an eyebrow pencil. All of this made the airmen popular with the women of the village, but the men of the village were not so happy. Food was another luxury that seemed to be readily available to the airmen. In one instance, a group of village boys, playing in the spinney at the back of the Towers, noticed that the kitchen window was wide open. They then saw a chef,
resplendent in a tall chef’s hat walking in and out of the kitchen door. At one point, he left a large fruit cake by the window. These boys had not seen a cake of this size for many years and after some discussion, one of the boys decided to run up to the kitchen window and grab the cake. We are told that as he did so, the chef reappeared and so the boy said “tut tut” (an expression often used in comics of the time) “I must be going” and ran as fast as he could back into the spinney. The boys then went at top speed to the Reccy and there, in the cover of darkness, they shared out the cake and ate it all! It must have tasted so good!! After 1945, the house became a home for elderly men run by Leicester Corporation. By 1966, the building firm Calverley had bought the house and grounds and developed the area known as Towers Drive. However the company fell into difficulties and it is said that the houses were the cause of it going into liquidation. Today, little is left of the house besides the wall and low towers on Station Road and another tower in the garden of a house on Towers Drive. Another notable Kirby Muxloe house sadly demolished and almost forgotten. N.B. You may remember that in last month’s article, we asked if anyone knew the identity of a couple (Eric and Madge) who featured in a poem penned by an Air Raid Precaution Warden. I am pleased to say that we have now been informed that the couple were Eric and Madge Healey, who lived at Highlands on Portland Road.

Why not hold your meetings in the library any time after 4.30 pm. The fee for Voluntary organisations is ÂŁ10.00 with commercial agencies paying ÂŁ12.00 an hour .As you all know our income will eventually be the means of ensuring that the lbrary remains open so lettings such as this will be an important to that
We are gettting an increasing number of car drivers actually asking us for permission to use the car park which we appreciate. Of course the park is still private property but enquirers are pointed towards the donation box in the library or the green box in the chip shop to make a donation. This will be particularly helpful for the upkeep of the car park and surrounding grounds.
Crow pie CafĂŠ Eat in or Take Away. Tea, Coffee (Regular, Latte, Cappuccino, Americano), decaff tea and coffee are also available. We have various tasty cakes, the favourites are Chocolate, Lemon Drizzle, Walnut and Cherry, and muffins with a variety of flavours. There is also a wide range of confectionary to tempt you and the children.
