It was so well attended with over 100 lovely ladies coming together to see a fantastic show case of beautiful clothing and accessories presented by DC Boutique, a gorgeous boutique in Kirby Muxloe. We had such a fun night with some of us hitting the catwalk for the first time ever (and quite possibly the last!)

Crime Prevention – Clares Law - Individuals have been given the right to find out whether a new partner has been a domestic abuse offender in the past.

This is a crime that often increases with the increase in scrap metal prices. There are measures you can take to make this type of crime less likely to happen to you. Search the internet and you will find target hardening devices that can assist you with this.

The provision gives people in a new relationship, or their friends or relatives, the right to ask police whether a new partner has a record of committing domestic abuse with previous partners. Leicestershire Police will then decide whether a disclosure needs to be made. Any disclosure may be to a different person to the one who submitted the request and it will be to a person who is in the best position to safeguard anyone who is vulnerable.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. Damage to Council Noticeboards etc. Two of the Parish Council’s Noticeboards have been damaged and pushed over recently, one in Tyler Road and the second in Dane Hill. A grit bin has been overturned and contents emptied in Nicholas Drive. The noticeboards will be replaced / re-erected and the grit bin contents etc., will be replaced as soon as possible. These incidents have been reported to the Police as vandalism/criminal damage.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm.

Often, at this time of the year, when the Christmas and New Year festivities are over, we feel a bit flat! We are still in the throws of winter and although the darkest days are over, we are confronted daily with grey skies, low temperatures and damp weather (a speciality of Leicestershire).

Samsone, who lived at 5, Main Street, recalled soot falling down the chimney and covering everyone in the house from head to toe. They were in a complete daze, with her sister walking around in one shoe and one slipper. She remembered that later in the evening, when they had been taken in by kindly neighbours, the bombs dropped on Blood’s Hill, and said that that their tea “shot out of their cups”! Violet Thirwell recounted that on the night of the bombing, her mother couldn’t be found anywhere. Eventually she was discovered in the garden, collecting in the washing that had been drying on a clothes horse in the kitchen. This had been blown out of the door, but Vi’s mother was determined to save her newly ironed clothes at all cost! Lastly, another wartime story, this time from Rosamond Wilshere. Rosamond had two aunts who lived on Gullet Lane. On hearing the bombs drop, her Aunt Olive, who was well known in the village, grabbed the nearest protective item that she could find (it was a saucepan), put it on her head and went marching down to the village to help wherever she was needed!

This seems to be a good time to recap on some of the more entertaining stories that have come my way in 10 years of interviewing local people. Sadly, some of the more elderly interviewees are no longer with us, but their stories are still as fresh and interesting as ever. There are many memories of WWI and WWII. The most memorable one from WWI is an eye witness tale recounted by Charlie Moore. At the time of interview in 2011, he was 97 years old. Charlie was born in 1914 and had clear memories of some men of the village jumping into the moat to celebrate the end of WWI in 1918. He also remembered camping holiday at Skegness, often in the rain, on a campsite which was all “hills and hollows” . At one time, they were so wet they ended up sleeping on the empty tressle tables under the Clock Tower, in the middle of the town!

In the early days of the Kirby Players, Tony Ball told us the story of the “ghost” at the castle. When putting on the production of “A Rose without a Thorn”, publicity photos were being taken in the castle grounds. A lady who lived on Oakcroft Avenue happened to be upstairs at the time, talking to a friend on the telephone. It appears that she stopped suddenly, exclaiming to the person on the other end on the ‘phone “I’m sure I’ve just seen Henry VIII walking around the castle”!! Peter Webster told many tales of George Upton, licencee of the Royal Oak from 1943 to 1963. George was said to be a prankster, who often played tricks on his unsuspecting customers. On one occasion, a lady who delivered milk from Ratby finished her round and as was her usual custom, tethered her horse and wagon to a post in the

car park, then entered the pub to enjoy her usual drink. George Upton went outside, removed the horse from its shafts and repositioned the horse and wagon. He pushed the shafts through the three bar fence, securing the horse in the field and leaving the wagon in the car park. When the lady returned to her horse, she couldn’t understand why she was unable to move forward! Peter also recalled the early days of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas performed in the village. Peter and his friends were in the chorus and so when they had a break of 20-30 minutes, wearing full stage makeup, they used to “slip down to the pub, to have a quick one”! Lastly, a few comments left in the record books of Kirby Muxloe Air Raid Precaution Wardens - December 1940 “Controller having succeeded in doing the Railway jigsaw puzzle, was so overcome that she sounded a short blast on the sirens! Sunday cocktail parties are now forbidden”! July 1942- “Miss Cufflin of Ratby reported that Warden Richards had met with an accident, through being thrown off his cycle by a collision with a CAT! ”. August 1942 - it was noted that “the ARP post seems to have lost its popularity as a social club, probably due to the calling up of women’s services”! Finally, from February 1943 - “Warden Peckham received a report form Lt. Howes, that a “strange form of bomb marked “SAND” was at the top of Big Hill, behind the castle”. It was actually a bag of sand, left behind by the Home Guard on one of their many excercises”. Past residents who have passed away in recent years and are much missed include Charlie Moore, Colin Percy, Violet Thirlwell and Rosamond Wilshere.

Colin Percy had many memories, one told by him and many other people concerned Mr and Mrs Worker, the local fishmongers. When the village was bombed in 1940, their house was badly hit and was later demolished. They were always thought to be quite poor. However, after the bombs dropped, a large number of gold sovereigns were found on the road and pavement outside their house, which was opposite the ruins of the Free Church. The sovereigns were quickly collected up by willing A.R.P. wardens and other helpers, and returned to their owners. It was said that the soverigns had been kept under the bed! Around the same time, Martin Freeman remembered that his mother, on walking around the village to view the badly damaged buildings, saw a house where the bedroom was completely exposed. She remarked “Look at that wallpaper – I wouldn’t have that in my house!” At the actual time of the bombing, Margaret

Local History Cafe, these sessions will take place in the Library over tea, coffee and cakes, at a cost of £3.00 per head. Dates are 11th February, 10th March, 31st March, 28th April and 26th May. A very happy new year to all! We really do hope that 2020 will be rewarding, content and peaceful for all our readers and Library users. In the face of such worrying times, perhaps we can find some comfort and solace in our community and personal relationships. Certainly it is our hope that we can continue to expand the Library’s focus to encompass community needs and to foster rewarding relationships, largely, but not only, through the provision of reading materials and enjoyable activities. For ourselves, it seems likely that we shall be able to overcome all the legal difficulties that have stood in the way of our becoming a fully community-managed Library. In essence, this will mean that we will have greater freedom to develop and be responsive to community needs, not least in being able to expand our cafe provision to provide a greater range of refreshments in a spacious, warm and friendly environment. We will keep you informed of progress. In the meantime........

THE LOCAL HISTORY CAFE Our second Local History Cafe starts on Tuesday 25th February, from 10.30 – 12.30 at the Library. This is designed for people over the age of 50 who are perhaps feeling a little socially isolated, or fear becoming so in the future. It provides an opportunity to meet new people, make new

friends and develop an understanding of the local history of Kirby Muxloe and Leicester, all in the warmth and comfort of the Library over tea, coffee and cakes. Our first Cafe has been a great success – we have looked at Kirby Muxloe’s reputation as the ‘mostbombed village’ during the war, with the help of the Local History Group, a new take on the story of Joseph Merrick (otherwise known as The Elephant Man), and the development of Victorian and Edwardian Leicester. The programme is decided by the Cafe participants. Leicester City Football Club will be coming along to the second cafe to inform us of the Club’s development and plans for the future. If you would like to join us, you will need to complete a booking form, available at the Library, or ring Liz Collinson on 0116 2393332 for more information. The cost is ÂŁ3.00 per session (5 sessions in all) and we can help with transport if needed. Our current members are very welcome to come along to our second set of cafes.

MEMORIES OF OUR CHILDHOOD As a follow-on activity from the first Local History Cafe, the Kirby Muxloe Local History Group, in conjunction with the Library, is starting a group for the existing participants to meet together to share and explore memories of their childhood. It is hoped that people will be willing to record their memories so that we can build up an oral archive for the benefit of future generations. As with the

At Downton Abbey the Crawleys and their staff prepare for the most important moment of their lives. A royal visit from the King and Queen of England will unleash scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance.

The death of a loved one is one of the most difficult experiences a person can ever face. Yet having a safe space to talk, and a listening ear, can be a great comfort. As a Support Bereavement Volunteer, you will help to provide short-term support to people who have been bereaved Whilst it is not a counselling service, your role will involve actively listening to people who access our bereavement support group to support them with their grief and help them to explore their feelings post-bereavement. Offering support to someone who has been bereaved can be an emotionally challenging but extremely rewarding experience. To support you in your role, you will have access to support from our Bereavement Team. You will be required to attend a training course to develop your skills, meet other volunteers and learn more about the service. Our training course is to be held during February. Ratby Community Library & Crow Pie Cafe interval! December in the library was a busy and warm-hearted month. As well as all our regular users and visitors to the Crow Pie Cafe, Santa Claus dropped in to the delight of the children here for our Christmas Fayre. This is always a popular event and this year we raised £178 towards the Library running costs thanks to a fantastic cake sale, raffle of a generous Christmas hamper and various games and activities. The December Quiz Night was very wellattended with over twenty-five competing for the many prizes on offer. Steve Roche was our quizmaster for this Christmas themed evening, gifting a quality bottle of whiskey for the eventual winners. Friendly rivalry and much to enjoy so do come along to the next quiz night on 17th January starting at 7.30. Bring your own bottle to make it even more jolly at the

The library is a venue for other meetings both in daytime and evening; a new Mindfulness course begins here in February commencing Wednesday 12th from 7 until 8.30. Our Wriggly Readers sessions every other Thursday morning is a lively and popular event for pre-schoolers which parents and carers enjoy too. So why not book a space for your own meeting or group? With plentiful parking, refreshments and comfortable seating, we have lots to offer local business and social groups. If you've been feeling the cold and wet, remember that the Crow Pie Cafe has very reasonably priced hot drinks, delicious cakes and biscuits with sweeties for our younger visitors so pop in for a hot chocolate and slice of cake next time you're in need of a bit of comfort food and a chat! Our volunteers are a group of people who really want your visit to the library to be a pleasant one. They volunteer for different reasons and give a lot but they'll be the first to agree they get a lot in return. One writes “As a mum looking to return to the world of

paid work, volunteering at the library has reminded me that I can organise and manage work tasks...and shown me that I can converse with people on topics other than children! I can thoroughly recommend volunteering as a way to rebuild your confidence.” We get many regular visitors throughout the day but get particularly busy at the end of the school day where parents and carers can find information to help with homework tasks, students can use the internet for free (and print off up to five sheets for free if it's homework related) and all can enjoy a drink and snack before heading home. Two such student visitors remarked they were happy in the library because “I love all the familiar and new faces you see when you first come in” as well as “I love the peacefulness”. Another just repeated “Spiders and worms!” So you see, there's lots for everyone here in Ratby Community Library. See you soon in 2020

GoLearn adult learning courses open up new horizons for 2020 Hundreds of part-time day, evening and weekend courses are now open for enrolment from the county council's adult learning service.

CHRISTMAS DAY ALONE 2019 Everyone who attended Christmas day for those alone in Anstey and surrounding villages had a great day, volunteers and guests alike. We catered for 89 people! All guests had a lovely 5 course Christmas dinner, a present each and a goody bag with lots of yummy treats. We enjoyed great entertainment with Nigel on his squeeze box doing a Christmas sing along and of course several games of BINGO!!

Courses are available on a wide range of subjects, and at venues across the county. Classes begin in January and are open for enrolment now at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/golearn Courses on offer range from one-off two-hour sessions to 15-week courses and full 30-week programmes. They include languages, english for speakers of other languages (ESOL), British Sign Language, computer skills, art, fused glass, jewellery making, knitting, patchwork and quilting, and confidence building. Your results help us spot problems, but more importantly, they are also the first step in putting things right. This is why it's so important that we count garden birds. How to take part It’s so easy to take part. An hour with the birds is a wonderful opportunity to sit back, relax and spend time with nature. So, pop the kettle on, put your feet up and start counting!

How does Big Garden Birdwatch help? For over 40 years, we've been asking you to count the birds in your garden – and you've been brilliant at it. With over half a million people now regularly taking part, coupled with 40 years worth of data, Big Garden Birdwatch allows us to monitor trends and helps us understand how birds are doing. As the format of the survey has stayed the same, the scientific data can be compared yearon-year, making your results very valuable to our scientists. With results from so many gardens, we are able to create a "snapshot" of bird numbers across the UK. For four decades, the Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted the winners and losers in the garden bird world. It was one of the first surveys to alert the RSPB to the decline in the number of song thrushes in gardens. This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979, but by 2019 numbers of song

Ratby Primary School News.... PSA News - Wishing all Teachers, Staff, Parents, Carers and Children a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us on the Ratby School PSA. We have had a busy and exciting start to the beginning of the 2019 – 2020 Academic Year and would like to thank each and every one of you that has helped, participated and supported our fundraising efforts. So far we have held a Film Club, Disco, Glass Making and The Christmas Fayre, which have all been great fun. Please get involved; your support is invaluable to raise funds for the children of the school. As well as a donation to each class, the PSA pay for the coaches for the Pantomime trip and other trips (Sea Life, New Walk Museum etc) which in turn reduces the parental contribution. All monies raised are ploughed back into the school to enhance the children’s learning journey. If you would like to join us on the PSA or help at our events please do get in touch via the School Reception. Thank you and here is to a successful 2020.

Christmas Fayre 2019

We had a lovely time at the Christmas Fayre this year. It was a very busy afternoon, with many different stalls and activities taking place across the school. Santa’s grotto looked fantastic and this year was located in the small hall. The new teachers (who have just started at Ratby this year) all dressed up as elves to help Santa (as is the tradition!) One of the most popular and lucrative stalls was the ‘fill a paper bag’ stall where children kindly and generously brought into school bags that they had filled with small items. A huge thank you to the PSA who gave their time and energy to making it such a lovely festive event.

Sponsored Read – November Reading Challenge A huge, huge thank you to all the children who took part in our Reading Challenge in November. At the time of writing, we have raised a massive £1998.31, which we will use to purchase reading resources across our school. The PSA have agreed to match fund whatever we raised so thank you to the PSA! Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends of all our families, who have sponsored the children to complete the challenge. We will be handing out special certificates in assemblies to all the children who took part. We will also hand out a range of prizes too as a special reward. Thank you to 360 play, Manor Farm and Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre for the kind prize donations. Once again, thank you so much for the amazing effort.

Open the Book

Open the Book is a chance for primary aged children to hear key stories from the Bible. It is run by a team of local Christians who visit a number of local schools. We have had the pleasure of another visit this term where we heard the story of David and Goliath. It was another fantastic assembly. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Anti-Bullying Week This year's AntiBullying Week theme was 'Change Starts with Us' and it saw our children spend time in classes and assemblies understanding that collectively we can all make a change because even a small change makes a big difference. During the week, children spent a day wearing odd socks. It was an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique! Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have now been appointed and are playing a very active and responsible role in school.

On Thursday 12th December, Year 4 went to visit Ratby Parish Church. Reverend Bampton kindly talked to us about the church and gave us a tour. As an introduction, Reverend Bampton showed us a video about Jesus and the bible. On the tour he showed us; a tomb, the organ, the alter where he stands for communion, the crosses (there are 32), his pulpit that he stands at to address the people, the font used for baptism and the side chapel which commemorates those who served in the wars. He told us about the workmen who had originally worked on the church and hadn't finished the job as they had died in the plague. Bin Collections Residents may have seen on the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council website during the past Christmas period that there would be a double collection of both black and blue bins on Monday 30th December to help cope with the extra waste associated with Christmas Day. This only concerned Ratby and Groby. This information was then taken down and an apology from HBBC was posted on their website for the confusion. We both remonstrated with Waste Management about this as some residents put out both bins, only for the black bin being collected and the blue bin due for collection on January 6th. We both knew that due to Ratby's collection would not change as collection day did not fall on either Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. We can only apologise on behalf of the Council for the confusion.Â

Vandalism in Ratby Over the past week, two Parish Council notice boards, which are placed around the village for public information, were brought down. These notice boards were on Tyler Rd and the corner of Danehill and Station Rd. Also, an LCC grit bin was overturned and the contents spilled out over the road. This bin is located on Nicholas Drive and has been tipped over at least 3 times last year and was put back by village resident Mr Martian Soames and for that we are grateful. Furthermore, the village

has seen yet again, a dramatic increase in the deposit of nitrous oxide capsules, formally known as "legal highs ", and take the form of silver capsules that users inhale. Key sites are the car park of the Plough Inn and Martinshaw Wood Car Park. The Police have been notified and are actively monitoring these sites. We would ask residents who may witness any Anti-Social Behaviour to report it on 101.

Update on Planning Application for Markfield Road This application for 168 houses on land to the rear of Markfield Rd is due to go to Full Committee on February 4th. This will be discussed by Officers and Councillors at the pre-agenda meeting on January 14th. Leicestershire Highways have asked the land agents Charterhouse for more information regarding Highway Safety at the proposed entrance/exit so at the time of going to print, no recommendation has been issued and also, if the required information is not sent , then it is possible that the application may not be determined at the February Meeting.

Community Safety Questionnaire The Community Safety Partnership (CSP) is made up of a range of agencies who work together to make Blaby and Hinckley & Bosworth safer places to live, work and visit. The Partnership is consulting with residents via a questionnaire to find out what residents think are the most important crimes/disorder for them to tackle in the borough.
