Between 2012 and 2015 Sport in Desford (SiD) installed 176 solar panels on KWh every available roof of the SiD clubhouse, generating around 40,000 p.a. Following the installing of LED lighting in main rooms, corridors and for security lighting we managed to reduce our demand (consumption) from 46,000 KWh down to 36,000 KWh p.a., meaning that over the year we are now generating more electricity than we are consuming. However our generation necessarily occurs during the day, whilst the greatest demand is in the evenings, for lighting Legacy Ltd and floodlighting. As a result SiD recruited Carbon to install 6 2018 to Tesla 'Powerwall 2' batteries in May/June store daytime in the electricity for consumption evening, with two batteries on each phase of our 3 phase supply with a total capacity of 81 KWh. This is the first installation of this size in the UK and we are pleased to say that it is working really well so far. We estimate that this will allow SiD over a year to use about electricity on site instead of the previous 70% of our generated we hope willsave SiD around £1,500 each figure of 36%, which year on electricity being from imported the grid. to lead funders British Carbon Fund SiD is indebted Airways (managed by Pure LocalCharitable Leapfrog) and Postcode Trust, a grant-giving entirely by players of charity funded People’s Postcode Lottery, who with the support of Tarmac Landfill Community Fund provided the funds to complete this project and to Carbon Legacy Limited for an excellent installation. Get ready for a summer of treasure-seeking fun with the Mischief Makers! For this year’s Summer Reading Challenge we’re off to Beanotown, where rumour has it there’s a treasure chest full of epic pranks waiting to be discovered… Say hello to Pieface, Rubi, JJ, Gnasher, and the ultimate mischief maker: Dennis!
PARENTS with children due to start at primary schools in Leicestershire in September 2019 can now apply for places at their preferred choice of schools. More information about schools in Leicestershire and the application process can be found at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/admissions Parents then have until Tuesday, 15th January 2019 to submit their applications. Ivan Ould, county council cabinet member for children and families, said: “We want to remind parents to allow enough time to research and shortlist up to three primary schools that they want to include on their application. “There’s no automatic entry system for any school in the county so we’d encourage parents to make direct contact with the schools to arrange any visits.” Nearly 7,300 applications were received for the start of the autumn term this year and resulted in: • 92.82 per cent (6,774) securing their first choice - that was compared to 91.3 per cent in 2016; • 4.39 per cent (321) securing their second choice; • 0.83 per cent (61) securing their third choice; • 98.05 per cent (7,156) securing one of their top three choices The county council is encouraging parents to make an online application - 97 per cent of them did for the Autumn 2018 term - so they receive an automatic acknowledgment that the application has been submitted. Late applications, says the council, have to be given the lowest priority as they have to be processed after the applications made on time.
They’re on the trail of the hidden treasure, and they’re looking for some more friends to join in the adventure! Take part in the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 and see if you can help the Mischief Makers find the box of tricks. Taking part in the Challenge is simple – when your summer holidays start, you can sign up for free at your local library.

You’ll receive your very own map of Beanotown to get you started. Read six library books (or more!) over the holidays to collect special stickers to add to your map. Collect all the stickers to discover where the treasure is hiding and complete the Challenge. Dennis and his friends will be with you every step of the way to give you clues and show you how to be a Mischief Maker too! You can use https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ to keep track of the books you read and write book reviews, enter competitions, chat to other readers and much much more…

It’s been a fantastic month of football, with dramatic action, goals galore and entertainment aplenty‌ and that’s not just at the World Cup! Market Bosworth FC held its annual tournament for under 10s earlier in June, and followed that up later in the month with both junior and senior end of season awards ceremonies. The annual Battle of Bosworth tournament attracted teams from near and far with 35 visiting teams from all over Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Coventry. The two day event was a huge success and there was some fantastic football on display.

This year’s junior awards were run with a difference, on a gloriously sunny day at MB Sports Club. The day featured many different activities (cross bar challenge, penalty shoot outs etc), plus team presentations and an exhibition match between the club coaches and some of the club’s more intrepid parents. An entertaining end to end match ended with a respectful 2-2 draw. The presentations were followed by a live screening of England V Panama in the World Cup, in which England recorded a record World Cup victory. KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB
This month, we would like to make a very particular appeal for a very particular kind of volunteer. As you will know, the Library, in common with all community-managed part in a fantastic art Libraries, to raise sufficient funds to cover early lunch and thenhas excitedly rs who all showed them costs, some an amount we reckon to be running in excess of £8,000 per annum. We also need ate theirto owndevelop Anglo Saxon our role as a community hub, cil and tracing them onto trace where we can use the space and facilities I’m sure you’ll agree that the to provide social interaction for all manner of vulnerable groups. For example, the factor of loneliness and its devastating effects on individuals is very much in the news at the moment and we would like to be able to provide space and support for those who may be in this position to meet with others and form new friendships that would help to counteract such loneliness. There are many other possibilities, including support groups.
Our problem is that, whilst our Steering Group has many skills that have helped in setting up and carrying on Library operations, our skill sets do not include community development and marketing, both of which we badly need! We need ideas and we need the expertise to help to advertise and promote the Library and any events that we mount. So this constitutes an appeal to any Kirby Muxloe
residents who have skills in these areas, have a little time to offer and would like to feel that they are making a valuable contribution to the community in which they live. Unfortunately, as we are a charity, any such help would be on a voluntary basis – the reward is that glow of satisfaction that comes from feeling you have made a difference! If anyone is willing to come forward, please drop in to the Library at any of its opening times and talk to us. Alternatively, email lizcollinson1941@google.com We would be delighted to hear from you! In the meantime, we are very grateful to Kirby Muxloe Parish Council, which has given us a community grant amounting to £2,000. We will be purchasing a rather more sophisticated printer with this money and new display boards, as well as an ice cream freezer unit. So ice creams will very shortly be available for purchase at the Library at very reasonable prices - just what we need in the current heat wave!
We shall shortly be holding stocks of tubs for those who are on medication and may need help from the paramedic service, to put their details in and store in the fridge. Any paramedics visiting in an emergency will then know where to find your details in a trice. These are free of charge, so do drop in to the Library to pick up yours. And finally – our next coffee morning is on Saturday July 28th, 10.00 am – 1.00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Have A Cruelty-Free Holiday In the early 1980’s while I was on holiday in Turkey I remember seeing a huge brown bear in a street in old Istanbul dancing on his hind legs to the beat of a drum. A chain held by his keeper was attached to a ring through his nose. What a photo opportunity for which I gladly paid! I now look at the photograph with dismay and shame. At that time I didn’t question how an animal could be trained to perform such an unnatural act, nor did I consider it demeaning or cruel. How things have changed! The charity World Animal Protection stopped the cruelty of dancing bears in 2012 having begun their campaign in 1998. Bears were ‘trained’ by their keepers who tugged at chains attached to nose rings or by beating the bears’ legs. The bears were also often forced to stand on hot metal plates which made them stand upright and ‘hop’ from leg-to-leg, or ‘dance’. After a day’s performing the bears would be imprisoned in a barren metal cage with just enough food for survival. Research carried out by Oxford University has revealed that the mistreatment of over half a million animals in wildlife attractions around the world is being subsidised by unaware tourists. Many of the animals are captured from the wild as babies after their mothers are killed. The young animals are then forced into training regimes to entertain tourists. Unable to carry out their normal behaviour they are imprisoned in enclosures or cages when they are not ‘working’. For safety reasons many are declawed and/or have teeth removed. Tourists are told that payment for rides,
photographs or other entertainment supports conservation. This is mostly untrue. Tourists are in fact unwittingly supporting animal abuse and captive breeding. Baby elephants are chained in stocks and undergo a ‘breaking process’. Starved and beaten until their spirits are broken, they become entirely submissive to their mahouts (trainers). They then have a life of carrying tourists on their backs in blistering heat or learn to perform ridiculous tricks. Lion cubs as young as six weeks old are taken from their mothers to be petted relentlessly to frustration by 100 to 150 tourists a day who are keen to get a ‘cool selfie’. When they become too large they are often sent to canned hunting camps to be shot by rich trophy hunters in enclosures where there is no escape. The opportunity to pose or walk with fully grown tigers and lions is a favourite attraction for tourists. In order to become sufficiently compliant for such activities the animals are often drugged with tranquilisers and abused in training. Swimming with dolphins is a popular activity. However, most dolphins are captured from the wild. Their complex social lives and bonds are destroyed causing suffering which often results in death. The survivors live out their lives in chlorinated pools a tiny fraction of the size of their ocean homes. Their lives in captivity are so stressful they are susceptible to disease, heart attacks and gastric ulcers. It is estimated that around 3,000 baby macaques are taken from their murdered
Newtown Linford Gardening Club Bunny Guinness, the celebrated garden designer and broadcaster is coming to speak at Newtown Linford Gardening Club on Tuesday October 23rd at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Peta Guinness (known universally as Bunny) has been a major player in the horticultural world for many years. She qualified as a landscape designer at Birmingham City University, where she recently received an honorary doctorate, and now runs a landscaping consultancy.
mothers annually in Indonesia alone. Wearing collars and chains they are forced to train from between four and six hours a day for six months. To make them stand on two legs their arms are tied behind their backs and they are pulled upright with their collar chains so that their feet just touch the ground. The chain is secured and the animals can be left to hang for hours. Many don’t survive the training. Those that do can perform for five to ten years after which many are sold to be killed for food which is considered a delicacy. Sensitive, intelligent orangutans are brutally forced into inflicting aggression against each other in staged boxing matches cheered on by men, women and children. Photojournalist, Aaron Gekoski said, “People found it funny watching these beautiful, sentient, intelligent animals …what I witnessed was shocking and incredibly distressing.” Camels and donkeys work for long hours daily in intense heat with no breaks for food or water carrying tourists. Snakes, monkeys, baby chimps and other animals are used as photo props with no regard for their welfare. Traditional festivals encourage tourists to watch cruel spectacles such as bullfights. Animal exploitation in holiday resorts is rife. The choices we make on holiday concerning animals can have the power to reduce cruel attractions and save lives or encourage more exploitation. Have a cruelty-free holiday and treat our non human friends with the respect and dignity they deserve by avoiding any entertainment that could exploit them.

Ratby Library with Crow Pie Cafe The Ratby Library I know that in recent editions of Your Local I have talked about everything except the library itself. So, when was the last time you read a book? Why not stock up with a few to take on holiday? Each Tuesday we get deliveries of books that are moved around Leicestershire’s libraries and on the last occasion it included a box of new books and a box of large print books. If there is a specific book that you want, we can order it for you. Some customers sit and read a book while they have a drink of coffee or tea each time they visit. The children’s section is very well used, often by the whole family attending together with Mum or Dad taking advantage of the free Wifi while the children are looking at the books. Draughts and chess are popular as well with the parents teaching the children how to play. Our parking and toilet facilities are often used by non-customers and a small donation in the money box provided on the donated books shelves is appreciated.
Crow Pie Café Ice-creams and lollies are proving to be very popular in the current warm conditions. We also have a range of cans in the fridge to cool
you down after trudging up or down Main Street. Personally, I find a nice cup of tea very refreshing.
Quiz evening Thanks to Stephen Roche for continuing to host the monthly Quiz evening. His selection of questions takes in a wide range of topics providing a learning experience as well as the competition. Attendance in June was a new high of 25. The winners were Councillors Harem with 35 points. The prize was a 20.00 Voucher for a meal at the Bull’s Head provided by Care@Home. The next Quiz is on Friday July 13th at 7.30pm. Some people bring their own Alcohol to drink but the Café is open for those who want tea, coffee or soft drinks.
Book Club The next meeting is at 6.30 pm on 16th July and the book chosen for this month is ‘Memories of a Geisha’ by Arthur Golden. Wendy Deeping is your host and can be contacted on 0116 2390 227.
Wriggly Readers The July meetings will be on the 12th and 26th. Lisa Collins and several other mums continue to provide this free opportunity to bring babies and pre-school children to an hour of active fun, and drawing. I note that there is a wide age range attending and the older ones are separated from the main group and
encouraged to read to one of the helpers. There is no charge for this but purchases from the Café are appreciated.
Volunteers As you already know I always include an invite for new volunteers to join us. This need not be to work on the Library, it would be most helpful if we had a small team looking after the café for instance. Shifts are 10.00am to 01.15pm and 01.15 (6.30pm on Wednesdays) and 10.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays. Visit the library, talk to a volunteer and get an application form. Or call me for a chat.

Tuesdays 4th/11th/18 September 2018 at 7.30pm As part of our local Churches Together group Kirby Muxloe Free Church has partnered with Christians Against Poverty to offer CAP Money courses in our community. The service is completely free. The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. It is a simple, yet highly effective money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that really works. This course will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can save, budget, spend, give and avoid money problems. Enjoy a welcome in the Living Room at Kirby Muxloe Free Church where there is free off-road parking at the rear of the church building. Each course has three sessions of about 2 hours including a refreshment break. The format is informal with short video clips, discussion, money saving tips and some practical problem solving. By attending this course you will be provided with online tool to use during and after the course as well as course material to refer to, to use and to take away. To find out more you can visit www.capmoney.org.uk where all the available cap money UK courses can be found, and you can book directly online to the course of your choice or you can also request an online booking link from kirbycapmoney@gmail.com for your local course while places are available or call the church office on 0116 239 3173 for more information.

World Scout Jamboree 
Hi, James here with another update on my World Scout Jamboree  fundraising. Over the last few months I have been very busy organising various fundraising activities. I held a Bake Sale on the Baron’s Close Green, selling homemade cakes to our neighbours and friends; a big thank you to all who supported this event as I raised nearly ÂŁ100.00. I also had great support     from the local Cubs, allowing me to sell cakes, sweets and    drinks at their Cub’s Sports day. I hosted a curry night with friends                  ď€żď € at the Spice45 restaurant in Narborough which turned out to be a  great evening. At the Groby Street Fair we ran various stalls including a teddy tombola. Despite the very hot day and England playing Panama in the World cup there was a great turn out and a successful day of fundraising. You may have noticed my collection tins around Kirby in the One Stop, Castle Pub, Royal Oak and the Post Office. I would just like to say a massive thank you to all the Kirby residents and the staff of these establishments for your enormous generosity and continued support. If you wish to get further information or feel you are able to support me, then please email ‘jamesjamboree2019@gmail.com’. Alternatively you can visit my fundraising page at www.gofundme.com/jamesjamboree2019/ . Thank-you so much for your continued support James.

By doing this, the hope was that the group could keep going. Even with this reduced workload, by December 2015 they had still managed to raise ÂŁ250.

Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hi everyone, I hope you are all basking in the recent mini heatwave we seem to be going through, we have had a great few weeks at the club with yet more bookings and we have hosted lots of parties. The world cup has been great for us and the atmosphere at the England games have been excellent, what I have found more than pleasing is the amount of family’s coming down, we have had the bouncy castle up and the kids have been able to play outside in beautiful safe surroundings and while there have been a lot of mums outside enjoying a nice drink in the evening sunshine the men have been inside cheering on the 3 lions. It really pleases me to see so many families down enjoying themselves! On the sporting front the football our teams are having a bit of a pre season break although the Ratby Panthers under 15s have just won a pre season tournament hosted at Beaumont Leys so congratulations to Kyle and his team and fantastic for the new junior section to get some silverware in the cabinet so quickly. The new kit for the Panthers has been launched and I am sure you will agree with me looks very smart indeed! The Ratby Town Cricket Club have had mixed fortunes, the 1st team have struggled since promotion but managed their first win of the season but I fear it may be a long summer for the guys but if they continue to show the same application I am sure they will turn things round. The 2nd string however after a very poor start have turned things round and are moving up the table nicely with some great results so it can be done if you keep plugging away. The Pool team have been finding their feet in their first season and have been performing really well so well done to them. We are looking to attract a cycle club and a running club to use our facilities as their base, we are in a great central location with so many possibilities of great rides or runs, using the club as a place to meet and finish, we have changing and shower facilities and it would be great to attract more sports to the club, we have football, cricket, kick boxing and archery the more sports we can house the better. If anyone is interested in bringing a new sport to the club please contact me. We are so lucky to have these fantastic facilities right on our doorstep, lets not waste them! People are making a real effort to turn the Sports Club around and make it somewhere we can be proud of, Ratby Town Cricket Club, Ratby Panthers and the Boroughs Hill Bowmen are really pulling together and making a real difference to how the place looks and the feeling and vibe is the best it's been since I've been here. We are still looking for investment to improve the facilities and there is an opportunity to invest in a sponsorship banner or board (contact for details) it is a great format to advertise your business and at the same time put money back in to grass roots sport in the community and help us improve the facilities. Projects we need to work on are drainage, maintenance and up keep of the football and cricket field areas and we are also looking for a sponsor to enable us to replace the windows and add a disabled toilet and baby changing area at the club house. There is an opportunity for significant investment in the club house and a re branding rather like football stadiums (Etihad, King Power, Emirates to name but a few). Local firms such as Sign Direct, L.H Joinery and Harrisons Spice have already invested a large amount of money and we thank them for doing so. If you are interested in sponsoring the club in any way shape or form please get in touch. USE IT DON'T LOSE IT!

Ratby Parish Church Lunch Club - Volunteers required We have a thriving lunch club for elderly people which is held monthly in the church hall. We cook and serve a traditional 3 course lunch for those who attend. Our lunch club is almost 7 years old and we are keen to keep it going. I am looking for more volunteers to help with this service. If you have 3 or 4 hours to spare occasionally and like the idea of voluntary work with the elderly why not give this a go. It is very satisfying work and it is very joyous . From 1 July 2018 Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council will be implementing a range of changes after commissioning an independent Hinckley car parks study. Plans aim to increase the availability of short stay parking. These include introducing one and two-hour tariffs on all long-stay car parks, increasing charges for longer stays in short-

stay car parks, and making Trinity Lane East car park short stay only. The study revealed that, while there were plenty of car parks, individual sites can become very busy. There is also often a shortfall of short-stay parking on Saturdays.
The Make a Stand campaign centres around a pledge which has been developed by the Chartered Institute of Housing in partnership with Women’s Aid and the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA).
Short stay car parks will see fees rise from 50 pence for up to an hour to 60 pence, while over four hours will increase from £4.80 to £6.00. New car park charges will become effective from Sunday 1 July 2018.
The campaign consists of four commitments to support people who are experiencing domestic abuse. The four commitments are: • To put in place and embed a policy to support residents who are experiencing domestic abuse
On long stay car parks parking for up to five hours will see an increase from £1.30 to £1.60, while those staying for over five hours will see a 10 pence rise. Charges for parking permits on these car parks are frozen.
• To make information about national and local domestic abuse support services available on your website and in other places which are easily accessible to residents and staff
Meanwhile, parking in the popular town centre Church Walk and St Mary’s car parks will be available for a maximum of three hours (including the blue badge holders bays) to ensure spaces are available for shoppers throughout the day.
• To put in place a HR policy and procedure on domestic abuse, or to incorporate this into an existing policy, to support members of staff who are experiencing domestic abuse
New payment machines (chip and pin and / or contactless and cash) will also be phased in as pay and display machines are replaced. Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council’s Executive Member for Towns, Councillor Miriam Surtees said: “Over the past few years we have been working with Hinckley BID and the Chamber of Trade to seek to improve the parking offer in Hinckley. “We hope that the introduction of more short stay car parking and new cash and card payment machines will help residents to choose to come into Hinckley town centre for both shopping and leisure activities, supporting local businesses and events. There has been no increase in parking charges for many years and we have tried to keep the increase as low as possible. While charges have been frozen for eight years, the decision to increase them was not made lightly by the Borough Council and we remain committed to regularly reviewing and refreshing parking strategies to meet the needs of residents.”
Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council Makes a Stand against Domestic Abuse The Borough Council has signed up to a new national campaign to confirm its commitment to tackling domestic abuse in communities across Hinckley and Bosworth.
• Appoint a champion in your organisation to own the activity you are doing to support people experiencing domestic abuse. Around one in four women and one in five men are affected by domestic abuse in the UK every year. Locally the council supports more than 100 people in the Hinckley and Bosworth area every year and employs a dedicated Domestic Abuse Outreach Worker to offer impartial advice, counselling and practical help with finding somewhere safe to live, emotional support, getting legal advice, applying for benefits and whatever else is needed. Councillor Mike Hall, Leader of Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council and Executive Member for Housing and Community Safety said: “As a council we have always shown a strong commitment to tackling domestic abuse in our local community. We have our own domestic abuse outreach service to support victims of domestic abuse and we do therapeutic work with children who have been affected by domestic abuse to improve their health and well-being. We have local policies in place for staff and are extremely proactive in raising awareness of domestic abuse and getting information out to the community on how to access the help available. We have signed this pledge to show our ongoing commitment to tackling

Rebecca*, one of the people who experienced support from the council and partner agencies for herself when she needed it last year is thankful for the way that support has helped her to move on with her life. She said: “They were amazing. They kept in regular contact, helping me find somewhere safe to live and helping to get my new home ready for me. I made some new friends at the counselling sessions and everyone was so helpful and really understanding. Now I feel stacks better in every way and I just feel relieved more than anything that I’m out of the situation and in my own home doing what I want when I want and just being free and not controlled by someone else.” Rebecca has a powerful message for anyone living with an abusive partner who is thinking about contacting the service. “Don’t hesitate, they will give you all of the advice and support you need. They can get you out of a situation and into safety really quickly.” • For confidential help and advice on domestic abuse in the Hinckley and Bosworth area please contact the Domestic Abuse Outreach Worker on 07966 202181 or 01455 255746 Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. YEAR 11 PROM!
Food lovers grow their own
Brookvale Groby Learning Campus held their Year 11 prom on Friday 22nd June at the beautiful venue; The Empire, Belgrave Gate, Leicester.
HOME-GROWN fruit and vegetables are becoming increasingly popular as more and more of us try to avoid plastic-wrapped supermarket food. A spokesman for the National Allotment Society said that many councils have seen an increase in demand for allotments, with waiting lists in some London boroughs stretching for decades. Raymond Blanc, the French chef, says that British people are demanding ‘individuality and flavour’. Tommy Banks, TV’s Great British Menu winner, says: ‘Using your own produce for home cooking will naturally taste better.’

Local author Lindzi Mayann has recently published, Maga High and it’s causing quite a stir. Set in infamous party destination Magaluf, in Spain, it is the only chick-lit of its kind. The humorous, saucy story tells the tale of main character Jodie who goes on a girl’s holiday and decides, actually, she would like to stay for a few more weeks. But this would mean getting a job on the strip selling shots or promoting clubs. Can she really do it? What adventures (and misdemeanours) could this lead to!

The information sessions, which are to be held on 17 July, offer members of the public a fantastic opportunity to find out more about Canine Partners, what they do as a charity and how to support them. Information sessions are held at the training centre in Osgathorpe, Leicestershire, throughout the year, where you can see a demonstration and hear from an established partner about the difference their canine partner has made to their lives.
Lindzi recently featured in a radio interview with the BBC and spoke of how the book is written from personal experience of doing just that. 8 years ago she herself took the plunge and chose to miss her return flight home in favour of the wild lifestyle LOOKING TO TRY LOCAL ADVERTISING? Lindzi has always wanted to be an author and decided to follow the age-old advice of writing about what you know. The things she witnessed and heard about during her time in Magaluf have gone on to provide a great basis for her story.
Time to think about a kitchen makeover
The dogs are trained to carry out a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. They can even help load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. By attending an information session, it helps to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity, which will lead to Canine Partners being able to re-open their currently closed waiting list for new applicants. The information sessions will take place on Tuesday 17 July at 11am and 2pm. Canine Partners ask for a suggested donation of ÂŁ5 per person, which includes the costs for the event and refreshments. The session includes a presentation, a short film, a demonstration by dogs in training and a talk from an established partner. For further information and to book your place, visit caninepartners.org.uk/informationsessions/ or call 01730 716000 and select 1 for fundraising.
The topic is shocking and sensational and her high-spirited, amusing style is proving popular having already received many five-star reviews to date. It’s the perfect read to whisk you away to a sunnier, vibrant destination or to take along with you on your summer holidays for a fun, thrilling read. Maga High provides a sneaky peek behind the scenes of working life abroad and offers a brand new perspective on party destination holidays. Maga High is available as paperback and for kindle via Amazon. Lindzi is hopeful she can keep the positive momentum going throughout summer and is urging locals to get behind her and support her in this quest. She is planning to host a party at The Crown in Anstey on Saturday August 4th with a Magaluf, beach party theme. Everybody is welcome! You can read more about Lindzi and her book by searching for Maga High on Amazon and following her on social media sites Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com
Lifestyle service delivery in Leicestershire Consultation We want to hear your views on the proposed changes to lifestyle service delivery in Leicestershire. Unhealthy lifestyles - physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol - all increase the risk of developing and dying from diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. Healthy lifestyle choices can prevent up to 80% of these diseases and reduce the risk of premature death. Encouraging and supporting people to make the best choices about their health can make a real difference to people’s quality of life. The county council has a statutory duty to take appropriate steps to improve the health of people living in Leicestershire and currently commissions a number of services (such as weight management support and targeted physical activity), as well as providing some in-house services (such as smoking cessation) all of which are aimed at preventing diseases by tackling the key lifestyle risk factors smoking, physical inactivity, and poor diet. These services currently operate separately, however approximately 25% of the adult population engages in combinations of 3 to 4 such unhealthy behaviours. A more coordinated, integrated approach to lifestyle services would mean that people accessing one service could also be offered other lifestyle advice where appropriate, thus improving access, avoiding duplication of effort and providing a more holistic, personcentred service. The council also has an ongoing need to make financial savings in all service areas. By joining services up better, we think we can offer a service that is effective but will also save around £65,000 To take part in the consultation please go to www.leicestershire.gov.uk/lifestyle-services. Then click on Have your say Paper copies are available by calling 0116 3050705 or by email PHConsultation@leics.gov.uk The consultation will run from 14 June - 25 July
ATM SCAMS I have been contacted and informed that the ATM at Ratby Co-Op was compromised within the last couple of weeks. It would appear that
24
another Co-Op in the South of the County was also targeted. I have spoken to the victim who used both machines with different cards and took care but still ended up a victim from both sites a substantial amount of money was taken from both cards. I thought it best to remind residents about these scams. It would appear both cards were cloned. Fraud at ATMs is rare but it is important all cardholders are aware of the importance of covering their PIN and staying safe at a cash machine. The most common types of incident at an ATM are card entrapment and card skimming. To trap a card, fraudsters insert a device into the machine to prevent a card from being ejected. The fraudster then removes the card once you have left the ATM. To skim a card, fraudsters insert a device into an ATM which will copy the magnetic stripe details from your card. So they can make use of your card details, fraudsters must obtain your PIN. To do this they will either watch you at an ATM, known as shoulder surfing, or may use a camera. Therefore, it is very important you cover your PIN at an ATM. Financial Fraud Action UK recommends the following to stay safe at an ATM: • Stand close to the terminal. Always shield the keypad with your free hand, purse or wallet, and your body, to avoid anything or anyone seeing you enter your PIN. This will protect your PIN from anyone who might be looking over your shoulder, and also help to keep your PIN safe if a fraudster has set up a hidden camera to film the keypad. • Stay alert and put your personal safety first. If someone is crowding or watching you, cancel the transaction and alert a member of staff. Do not accept help from seemingly well-meaning strangers and never allow yourself to be distracted. • Have your card company's 24 hour contact number stored in your mobile phone. If your card is retained, stay at the ATM and contact your bank immediately. • If you spot anything unusual about the machine, or there are signs of tampering, do not use it. • If you think you have been a victim of fraud, you should contact your bank immediately. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040

Dixons Carphone has reported that 1.2m records containing non-financial personal data, such as name, address or email address, have also been accessed. There was also an attempt to compromise 5.9m credit and debit cards. Further details can be found in the Dixons Carphone statement. By going to www.dixonscarphone.com/~/media/Files/D/ Dixons-Carphone/documents/pr-investigation-into-unauthorised-data-access.pdf Attackers who have the stolen personal data may use it to approach customers, and trick them into revealing further personal information that attackers can use to harm you (for example, your banking login details). The National Crime Agency (NCA) is now leading the UK law enforcement response to the data breach, with specialist officers from the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) working with the company to secure evidence. Due to the complexity of these enquiries, the investigation will take some time. What should I do? Read through the NCSC advice below and take any appropriate steps. Anyone concerned about fraud or lost data should contact Action Fraud. Action Fraud’s online fraud reporting tool any time of the day or night, or call 0300 123 2040. For further information visit www.actionfraud.police.uk. We also recommend that people are vigilant against any suspicious activity on their bank accounts and contact their financial provider if they have concerns. NCSC advice to customers Monitor your financial accounts online or through statements for strange activity, such as transactions you do not recognise. If you do find something suspicious, report it immediately to your provider or Action Fraud. You can contact Action Fraud at. www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud Be particularly wary of unsolicited emails, phone calls or SMS messages asking you to disclose further personal details eg login information – especially if they claim to come from your bank/credit card provider. Such scams can be very convincing, and attackers may use your personal data to make them look even more realistic. Genuine financial institutions will not ask you to reply to an email with personal information, or details about your account. If you contact them, use a phone number/email address you have looked up yourself, rather than one sent to you in the email – it may be false. For further

information, look at NCSC guidance on the phishing threat following data breaches. If you spot a suspicious email, report it to your chosen email provider. Report suspicious phone calls or SMS messages to Action Fraud. You can check your credit rating quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway, using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results. Reputable service providers can also be found on the Action Fraud website
Follow Up Calls Computer Software Service Fraud There is concern that victims of previous Computer Software Service Fraud (CSSF) are being re-targeted for “owed money”. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) reports that CSSF scammers are returning to contact previous victims, requesting that they pay money owed for a fake malware protection service they had provided. Alternatively, the fraudster will ask for a new subscription fee in return for protection from a new threat. The victims that have made payments to the fraudsters have done so via credit/debit card payments. In some instances threatening and aggressive language has been used against victims, as part of the attempt to coerce them into sending money.
Computer Software Service Fraud involves the victim being contacted, told that there is a problem with their computer, and that for a fee this issue can be resolved. The aim of the fraudster at this point is usually to gain remote access to the victim’s computer and, subsequently, access to their online banking account. No fix actually occurs. The victims will often be cold-called or will receive a pop-up on their computer, prompting them to phone the suspect. Since the beginning of this year (2018), the total loss for repeat victims of CSSF has been reported as £16,712.85. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has noticed an increase in such reports since the beginning of May. Protect Yourself • If you receive such an unsolicited call or pop-up, do not make a payment. Always ensure you know who you are talking to. If in doubt, hang up immediately. • Do not allow remote access to your computer.
your actions. • Listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. Criminals may lull you into a false sense of security when you are out and about or rely on your defences being down when you’re in the comfort of your own home. They may appear trustworthy, but they may not be who they claim to be. For more information about how to protect yourself online, visit www.cyberaware.gov.uk and takefive-stopfraud.org.uk Finally I would like to thank you all for your continued support and remind you that should you need my help or advice, I always pride myself on making myself available to residents. Remember I am only a phone call or email away. Best regards,
Cllr Ozzy O’Shea
• Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision. Under no circumstances would a genuine bank, or another trusted organisation, force you to make a financial transaction on the spot; they would never ask you to transfer money into another account for fraud reasons. Remember to stop and take time to carefully consider

Day 2: Waking up early, we quickly ate breakfast and headed out for our second day: kayaking and climbing. Kayaking was very wet. Even if you weren’t one of the ones that fell in, you still ended up getting soaked from splashing about on a surf board. Climbing was a lot drier and there were lots of activities to do: climbing wall, zip line, climbing pole, abseiling and a Tarzan swing. The Tarzan swing was really scary as you swung on a rope into a net, without having anything to hold on to.

Year 5 – Drayton Manor On the 6th of June, Year 5 were in for a treat, they went for a day out to a theme park (Drayton Manor). It was an exciting and enjoyable day, it was a good opportunity to overcome fears and learn about how rollercoasters work. In the morning we visited the zoo and took part in the rollercoaster forces workshop. With Jess, we learnt about friction and forces, like kinetic and potential energy. We also took part in an experiment to see how much energy is needed for a rollercoaster cart to get around a loop. After lunch, we joyfully rushed to the rides, and spent the afternoon experiencing the extreme forces on the rides. After an amazing day, we were all tired, but wanted to stay longer...

HEALTHMATTERS TRAVEL HEALTH Regardless of where you’re travelling, abroad or in the UK, a holiday can be good for you. But not all holidays are a healthy experience. The Nuffield Health charity found that holidays can be beneficial to people’s health. A series of clinical and psychotherapeutic experiments revealed that holidays can reduce blood pressure and improve sleep quality and stress levels, the effects can continue for at least 2 weeks after returning home. This does raise a question, would we all live longer and healthier if we were on a permanent holiday? Unfortunately the answer to that is no, it is the break from your regular routine and having a relaxing environment which contributes to the health improvements. I’m sorry to say, the effects would diminish if the holiday was permanent.
vaccinations may be required dependant on your destination. It is alsoimportant to allow for enough time for antimalarial medication as some medications’ require you to take them 2 weeks before travelling. There are many different types of antimalarial medication, some which can be bought over the counter and some are prescription only. Pharmacy The Village Kirby Muxloe can now supply prescription only antimalarial tablets without the need to see your GP. The type of antimalarial you may need is dependent on your destination. Pop in to the Village Pharmacy Kirby Muxloe to find out which one you require. We stock all antimalarial medications and have them available at massively reduced rates.
Not all holidays are a healthy experience. In a recent survey by Trip Advisor, 60% of UK travellers admitted to drinking more than normal while away, 58% admitted to overindulging in food, and 34% of the British public said they didn’t feel refreshed or re-energised after the holiday with 11% saying they felt less healthy.
So Holidays can improve your health, but only if you are responsible during your break. The Association of British Travel Agents’ latest Consumer Trends Survey found a rise in late bookings to warm destinations. While last minute bookings can be a bargain, it is important not to ignore your health. A recent survey found that up to 48% of people needed to visit a pharmacy while on holiday. If you plan you can prepare ahead for most eventualities without the need of seeking medical advice while away.
When booking a holiday destination always allow for enough time to tricky when get all the necessary vaccinations. This can be especially booking last minute.
