Kirby Muxloe Action Against HGVs People living in Kirby Muxloe will have received in their letter box, or seen in one of the local shops, a newsletter reporting on the action currently being taken by a group of residents against a planning application by Crown Crest to increase their hours of activity. You may even have heard on Radio Leicester, or seen in the Leicester Mercury, or on BBCTV local news, reports of demonstrations against the scourge of huge numbers of HGVs passing through the village and blighting the lives of residents. The noise, pollution, congestion and disturbance are difficult to imagine unless experienced, as they are six days a week by residents of Ratby Lane and Desford Road and by pedestrians using the narrow pavements. These include schoolchildren, people attending church, visiting the graveyard and accessing the allotments. The mini-roundabout at the junction of these two roads is a particular hazard, especially at peak travel times. In 2010 Crown Crest were given permission by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council to erect a warehouse in Newtown Unthank and to operate 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 3pm on Saturdays. In 2012 they received permission to come through Kirby Muxloe. We were told to expect around 40 movements a day in total. There are currently well over 200, at least eighty percent of which come through Kirby. As many as 331 were logged on one day in May. Moreover HGVs have started to use Station Road and Main Street, illegally ignoring traffic signs which ban them. Newtown Unthank has now become, the national distribution centre for all Poundstretcher outlets and others and Crown Crest have applied to extend their hours of operation. This mean that HGVs will be pounding through the village from 6am to 11pm Monday to Friday, including Bank Holidays, from 8am to 6pm on Saturdays and from 9am to 1pm on Sundays, i.e. every single day of the year!. Everyone will be affected by this almost constant invasion of heavy vehicles, especially those who sleep in a bedroom that looks out onto their route and who want to open a window in the summer! Hinckley and Bosworth Planning committee is expected to meet to make a decision on the application on 23 July or 20 August. The Kirby Muxloe HGV Action Group will continue to keep fellow residents informed of events. Look out for a second newsletter and a village petition. There is also a special Facebook page, in addition to that of the village – Kirby HGV Action. You can request to join this and express your support, post your own photos of HGVs and be kept up to date. Meanwhile please e-mail or write directly to the chairman or other members of the planning committee to voice your objection to this application. The names of the councillors concerned are listed on the web site www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk under Planning and Building Control, then Planning Committee agenda and minutes, then contact details. The number of the planning application to refer to is 19/00253/CONDIT The Kirby Muxloe HGV Action Group is preparing a case to defend our village to present at the planning committee meeting. The cost of professional research and advice for this is considerable and a crowd-funding page has been set up to raise the money needed. The address for this is: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/kirbymuxloehgv Alternatively you can contact the co-ordinator on 07805 555561. The support – both financial and practical - of all Kirby Muxloe residents is needed. It will be particularly important for people to turn up to the Planning Committee meeting at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council offices to show the strength of feeling in the village. Every donation counts and every voice needs to make itself heard before it’s too late.

KIRBY MUXLOE FREE CHURCH HOLIDAY AT HOME 2019

'Safari So Good' From 25th to 27th June 33 guests gathered at Kirby Muxloe Free Church for this year's 'Holiday at Home' event, based on a Safari theme.

For 2 days we were, with the 20+ helpers, based at the church, with games, crafts, hand massage, quizzes, and other activities. We were provided with delicious hot lunches by our valiant kitchen crew, and were entertained by the Kirby Muxloe Pimary School choir, and by 'Our Flossie' On the middle day we had a coach excursion to Twycross Zoo, and enjoyed our 'safari' in the company of many endangered species, including a picnic lunch.

Could you change a child’s life in 2020? We’re looking for volunteer host families who can offer a stable, loving temporary home for children whose lives are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire) is a registered charity that supports Belarusian children from disadvantaged social backgrounds who are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Every year we bring children from the most badly affected parts of Belarus to the UK for a month of recuperative care. During the visit, the children stay with a host family and undertake a programme of organised activities that gives them plenty of fresh air, friendship, essential health checks and above all the fun they so desperately need. We’re on the lookout for enthusiastic, committed families who can provide a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child that will be placed in their care for four weeks. Host families will need to have their own transport and ideally live within 30 minutes of the charity’s day centre, which is currently in Markfield. John Buckby, Group Co-ordinator for Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) said: “Hosting a child is an incredibly rewarding experience and these visits do really change the lives of the children and the host families and volunteers that support them. “The next visit is planned for the summer of 2020 but there is lots of organising before then, so it’s vital that we have host families in place by September 2019 to ensure we can commit to bringing these children, so desperately in need of our help, over to the UK.” If you think you can help, either as a host family or as a volunteer supporting the visits you can find more information on our website www.focc-westleics.org.uk or get in touch with our Group Co-ordinator, John Buckby, on 01455 285799 / 07738 324947 or by email at john.evolution@btinternet.com.

We look forward to next year.

Ring Fence Your Assets Everybody wants to protect their assets for the benefit of their family and loved ones. We are all motivated to provide for our children throughout their lives and want what is best for them. Many people will think about or draft a Will hoping to ensure that the assets that they have worked hard for, are passed on to their children and chosen beneficiaries after their death. However, a Will can only dispose of the assets that you own at the date of your death and if the value of these have decreased during your lifetime, there will be little if anything left for your beneficiaries to inherit.

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving the surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of the life. A clause can be added for the Trustees to have access to the capital at their discretion. There are also other Will Trusts available depending on your circumstances (i.e. Discretionary Trust Wills) Lifetime Living Trusts are specifically designed to protect your assets for you during your lifetime. Giving you the peace of mind that your estate can be passed on securely and intact to your loved ones, after your death.

Property Protection Trusts (Life Interest Trusts) can only be created while both partners are alive. Normally with couples the property is divided 50/50, though these percentages can be different. Upon the first death, their share of the property is placed into the Trust to be administered by the Trustee. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary and this would normally be the surviving children of the deceased. The deceased’s share in the property is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so even if the surviving partner remarries or goes to a care home.

After your death, the Trust continues to work to protect your assets for your beneficiaries. The Trust can continue to hold the assets safely within it or pay them out to the specified beneficiaries. The Trust is extremely flexible after your death and has the potential to continue protecting your family for 125 years from the date it was created. That means that all the benefits described in this document can not only protect you and your children but can also protect your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

What are the main reasons for wanting to create a trust? • Your wishes to be specifically set out during your life •

To prevent any claims on your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975 (Provision for Family and Dependants)

To reduce probate costs upon your death

To provide for beneficiaries who require assistance

To protect the trust assets from passing to future spouse or partner before/or after your death

To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should you die or no longer live in property

To provide the trustees to rent property im mediately after your death or if you no longer live in property

To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should they lose mental capacity (although creating Lasting Powers of Attorney is essential)

Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Our book “Courage Commitment and Community” is now on sale at K.M. Library and also at St Bart’s Tea Shop (Church Hall, Main St., Tuesdays 2:30-4:30pm) Price £6. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 17th September, when the subject will be “Recent Excavations at Bradgate Park” by Peter Liddle MBE, former County Archaeologist.

Castle Road

The name Castle Road most likely derives from the fact that when the first houses were built around 1890, there was a clear view toward Kirby Muxloe Castle. This was long before the houses on Garfit Road, Oakcroft Avenue and The Keep were built. There is also evidence that originally, back in 1880, the road now named Portland Road on Kirby Fields was originally called Castle Road. This fact came to light when studying some old deeds belonging to a house on Hastings Road. “Castle Road” is shown very clearly on the map and is placed in the area of Portland Road. We would presume that when the plans were put in place for the road now known as Castle Road, a decision was made to change the names. Castle Road has supported a number of businesses over the years, mostly from the 1940’s onwards, but some as early as 1912. At number 1, Castle Road, from around 1908 until its closure around 1972, we would find the Co-operative Society, a grocery and provisions shop, together with a butcher’s shop. The butcher’s shop was managed by Don Gamble who will be remembered by many. The grocery store was fairly large and the first “manageress” was Mrs Fanny West, in 1908. Many will remember “divvy day” which took place twice a year, and was when customers collected their divvy. This was a forerunner of the supermarket loyalty cards we have today. We collect points and in return we are given vouchers or points on the actual card to spend, whereas on divvy day, customers collected cash, which they often spent on daily necessities or perhaps a new pair of shoes for a child. After the closure of the Co-operative store in 1972, the building became home to Kirby Footwear, until its fairly recent closure. The building now houses several one-bedroom apartments. In the 1930’s, Miss Smith, a District Nurse, resided in Castle Road, duly followed in the 1940’s and onwards by Miss Wellard, District

Nurse and Midwife. It has been said that at some time in the early years, Mabel North (married name Randall) sold sweets from a big shed in her garden at number 17, Castle Road. At number 5, Armson and Hollis, local builders, had their work yard. During WWII, the yard was a designated Depot and First Aid Post. The people who lived on Castle Road in the early and middle part of the 20th century had long narrow gardens. Although most houses have kept the same land, it would be very surprising to find pigs, rabbits and even chickens kept in the gardens today. In the early years, pigs and rabbits were kept for food, being fed on potato peelings and scraps. This was possibly the only food that the residents could afford to give them. Before and during WWII, we would find Hardy’s Dairy Shop at 12, Castle Road. During the war, the sale of ice cream was prohibited, but Mrs Hardy always managed to make some and keep it hidden. If you wanted to purchase ice cream, we understand that the secret was to ask for a bottle of milk!! We are told that Mrs Hardy was the freshest person ever seen, with round rosy cheeks and a beautiful clean white apron. Her shop was said to be “spotless”. At one time, the Hardy family even had their own dairy herd, kept in the village. In the early years, they sold milk from a large metal container at the side of the road. At the bottom of Castle Road, Bill Sleath, known to many as “the man from the Pru” (Prudential Insurance) lived with his wife Nesta. They were a well-known couple in the village, as Bill travelled around Kirby and the surrounding villages selling and collecting premiums for insurance policies. In the 1940’s until the 1970’s, this was how many insurance policies were sold, including car insurance, house insurance, life insurance.

At the bottom of Castle Road opposite the Sleath’s house was the Post Office. After moving from its original position on Main Street, the first sub-postmaster on Castle Road was Mr Charlesworth, followed in the 1940’s and ‘50’s by Mrs Townsend. Mr and Mrs Worker were fishmongers and it had been said that they lived on Castle Road, however after more research it can be confirmed that they actually lived at number 3, Main Street. As they were not included in the article on Main Street it seems only right to include them here. The Worker’s travelled around the village in their three- wheeled car, selling fresh fish. It is said that Mrs Worker wore a large white apron and a funny shaped white hat. During the bombing of November 1940, their house was badly damaged and lots of stories have been told of gold sovereigns under the bed or under the floorboards. We are told that the A.R.P. wardens spent a considerable time shovelling the coins in to a bucket or, it has even been said -a bath, before returning them to the owner! The house was demolished after the bombing. Castle Road is now residential only. Will we see more commercial property on Castle Road in the future? - it is very doubtful, but the houses remain, some still bearing the dates they were built, showing Kirby as it moved from the end of the 19th century into the early 20th. The latest of these early houses was built in 1914, the year that the Great War started. As in the country at large, life would change dramatically for many Kirby families in the World Wars to come.

At last! After so many false starts, it really does begin to feel that summer is here. No excuses now for not getting out into the garden and doing all those jobs that should have been done ages ago. It lifts your spirits, don’t you think? It certainly lifts ours!

DUKE OF EDINDURGH AWARDS STUDENTS We introduce you to the brilliant Tilly Lynn, our latest ‘graduate’. Tilly has been volunteering with us since the New Year, and has successfully gained the volunteering component of her Bronze Award. She wants to become a space scientist! Tilly has been of immense help to us, and her cheerful and dedicated approach has been second to none. She herself says: “I have learned a lot of things in my time at the Library, including many social skills. This has helped me at school also. I play piano as a hobby and I have recently performed in a concert at school. This is something I would never have even thought of doing last year. Over my time at the Library I have done many things, ranging from organising shelves to helping out at cake sales, to checking books in and out and using the computers. I have really enjoyed my time at the Library and I am going to still volunteer here after my DofE. And indeed she is, much to our delight. We have been so lucky with our DofE students – without exception they have been lovely to work with and have helped us enormously.

We have space for two more students from September, so if you are interested, do contact us by calling in at the Library. Incidentally, isn’t Tilly Lynn just the best name? You can’t go wrong with a name like that!

‘MEET THE AUTYHOR – RUTH SPENCER Ruth came to the Library on 15th June to talk about her recently published book, Origin of the Vampires. This turned out to be a really nice event, well-attended, full of interesting information on the process of creating a book and the technicalities of getting it published. Ruth is a local girl, having been brought up and educated in Kirby Muxloe, and having been an avid user of the Library at that time. She has very kindly donated a copy of her book to the Library – if you are interested in vampires, come and have a read! We are very grateful to her for her time and effort, and thank her very warmly for supporting us.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS School Readiness Drop-In Session – Tuesday 13th August 2.00 – 4.00 pm at the Library Do you have a child starting School in September? If so, you should be interested in this. School nurses and health visitors will be coming to the Library on Tuesday, 13th August, from 2.00 – 4.00 pm, to talk with parents about getting your child ready for school. They will provide information and advice about healthy diets, dental hygiene, toilet training, independence and self-care, behaviour management, speech and language development and play stimulation. This promises to be a really useful session, so do drop in for a chat.

TV Licensing Refund Scam

As many of you will no doubt know my wonderful wife Jenny Sadly passed away after a very short illness on Saturday 29th June 2019.

Please fill in the form completely, and return it to: E BUSINESS NUMBER WILLI-SANGER 16 12437 BERLIN, GERMANY What you need to know Action Fraud have received an increase in reports and intelligence where elderly victims are being targeted by individuals purporting to be police officers or traffic wardens. The victims are being approached whilst parked in a car park and are told by the suspect that they have parked illegally or broken a speed limit and a photo has been taken of their car for ‘evidence’.

Jenny was surrounded by her family and it came as a great shock to all the family. This has left me devastated. However I would like to thank the community on behalf of myself and our 4 children Laurance, Samantha, Mathew and Sabrina for all the kind wishes, offers of support, cards and donations to Cancer Research UK Jenny’s chosen charity. Jenny as many will know worked in the local post office with Atul and Bhavna as well as being the Vice Chair of the Parish Council in Ratby. Jenny was one of the show girls who put on the village show at the club that was recently disbanded. Jenny also started the cook and chat and craft and chat morning funded by both the Borough and County Council that run during term time on a Wednesday morning in Ratby between 10am and 12 noon which also run at the same time on a Friday in Groby. Jenny was also a master composter and volunteered around the County promoting composting. Over the past 3 years Jenny has won the hearts on many people across the County and civic heads as a person with a genuine smile. Jenny would listen to people’s concerns always find time to talk to people and offer advice. Jenny was an excellent Mayoress and Consort to me as Chairman of the County Council. Jenny will be a great loss to me and my family as well as to the local community.

Victims are advised that they will face a substantial penalty fine unless they pay a smaller upfront fee immediately. Victims, who opt for paying the smaller penalty, will be directed to a parking meter and asked to enter their card and PIN. These parking meters have been tampered with by the suspect in order to retain the card. Once the victim inserts their card and are asked for their PIN, the victims are shoulder surfed for their PIN by the suspect. Once victims input their PIN, the card is retained by the machine and victims are told by the suspect to seek help from the company who operates the parking meter or their bank.

When Is Free Not Free When It Costs 899 Euro Please see below message from Leicestershire Trading Standards to be aware of unfair trading practices. ------------------------------------------------------------------

When is ‘free’ not ‘free’? When it costs 899EURO. Businesses are being warned by Leicestershire Trading Standards Service to check the small print when receiving communications offering entry into business directories or similar publications. This offer was received and promoted as ‘Updating info is free of charge’ but failed to mention the yearly entry fee into the directory of 899EURO for a minimum of 3 years. Whilst this email was aimed at businesses, we recommend everyone to be wary of offers claiming to be ‘free’. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

What you need to do • If you are suspicious about the authenticity of the fine, do not pay it until you have verified it with your local council. • Police Officers will not take money off you for a fine. • Always shield your PIN from view when using an ATM machine, and never share your PIN with anyone. • If your bank card is retained by an ATM machine, contact your bank immediately to inform them. I also want to thank you all for your continued support and remind you that should you need my help or advice, I always pride myself on making myself available to residents. Remember I am only a phone call or email away. However I shall be taking a few weeks off Council work and as such Chris Boothby will take any enquiries and County Councillor Peter Bedford 01455 824733. If urgent I will be at home on my mobile.

Ratby Primary School News.... Mablethorpe

Ratby Summer Fayre

On Friday 28th June, Year 2 went on an exciting trip to Mablethorpe and what a fun day we had! The children arrived early to school on Friday morning where they dropped off their suitcases and excitedly waited in the hall ready to board the bus. Although the journey was long and tiring, the children managed to keep themselves entertained by chatting, playing games and singing as loudly as they could!

Our Summer Fayre got off to a flying start with the glorious weather that greeted us! So many families came to join in the fun which made the Fayre a huge success, raising more than £1000.

When we finally arrived at Mablethorpe, we had a stroll along the beach and ate our delicious packed lunches. We visited the Lifeboat Station and we were able to spend our money in the gift shop. Afterwards we played in the sand and we even paddled in the sea – although it was freezing! After that we enjoyed a nice ice cream before heading back to school. rom such an eventful day that they almost

When we arrived back at school we had a yummy ell asleep as soon as their heads hit the illow! dinner from the fish and chip shop. Then we went up to verall, the trip turned out to be a huge uccess and the children had a fantastic time the top field and we took part in ‘Ratby’s Got Talent’ – e would like to take the time to thank the hildren for their excellent behaviour what a lot of talent there is in Year 2! Before we settled hroughout the whole trip. down for the night we enjoyed a warm cup of hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows. To finish the night, we got changed in to our pyjamas and found a space in the hall for our sleeping bag and pillows. The children were so tired from such an eventful day that they almost fell asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow! Overall, the trip turned out to be a huge success and the children had a fantastic time! We would like to take the time to thank the children for their excellent behaviour throughout the whole trip.

Year 6 Scientists in the making! We have been so lucky this term as some of our Year 6 pupils have been on fantastic Science trips! We attended a DNA workshop at Loughborough College which was very informative and fun. We enjoyed using sweets to represent DNA and we also got to design our own animal, thinking about the features it needed to have for survival. Two of our girls even won the survival challenge! We also attended the Great Science Share with many other schools. Again, the selected children really impressed Mrs Thomas and other schools with their scientific knowledge as they showed off their bird beak investigation. We also got to take part in many other science investigations which was great fun! Lastly, 4 different pupils were selected to take part in the Hinckley and Bosworth Celebration Event. These children had worked hard in an after school engineering club and were excited to show off their car inventions. We got a see a range of vehicles and were awarded certificates for taking part.

Many children enjoyed the annual pleasure of throwing wet sponges at the teachers! As a special tribute, in memory of a much loved child Theo Williamson, the penalty ‘Shoot Out’ raised £104 for the Laura Centre which helps to support families who have suffered a bereavement. Thank you to the members of the Parent Staff Association who give up so much of their time and energy to provide much needed funds for the school.

Shree Sanatan Hindu Mandir Year 3 and 4 visited the Shree Sanatan Hindu Mandir in Leicester. We had a fantastic morning learning all about the Hindu religion, practising a Hindu dance and appreciating different deities. Thank you for a great morning.

Year 3 Visit Shenton Primary School Year 3 returned to Shenton Primary School to visit our school friends this term. The Year 1 children shared Eid celebrations with us in their assembly which was brilliant! Afterwards, the children had a chance to catch up and play together and complete craft activities. Thank you for having us, we had so much fun!

Summer Season at Bradgate Park The Ruins of Bradgate Park House, in the centre of Bradgate Park are set to be the backdrop for a Summer Season of outdoor performances from national and local companies and performers, providing unforgettable memories of open air theatre and live music in Leicestershire’s favourite Park

7pm the event will culminate in a light show and wildlife-friendly pyrotechnics, all set against the backdrop of the home of Lady Jane Grey.

The 2019 season in August offers a great variety of opportunities, with the popular Bradgate Park Proms Spectacular, followed by the Acoustic Folk picnic, alongside daytime family theatre in the summer holidays.

The following day, Sunday 18th August, the Ruins act as a venue for the third Acoustic Folk Picnic. The Acoustic Folk Picnic is a family friendly day in the walled Ruins and this year will see seven sets across the day, which starts at 12 and finishes at 7.45pm. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic, relax and enjoy a great day of music that includes local and award-winning national artists.

Daytime family theatre is returning to Bradgate Park on the 7th and 8th August with Quantum Theatre’s adaptation of Wind in the Willows. The daytime performances are at 2pm on Thursday August 8th and at 11 and 2.30 on Friday August 9th. Their shows deliver a magical event for young and old alike taking them back to the tales of their childhood in a show designed to appeal to all the family. With recent interest in the Wind in the Willows puppets’ return after 30 years’ absence and a new film, the performances will be a popular summer day out. The Park’s Explore project volunteers also offer an added treat of free activities.

The Charity’s fundraiser has been lucky to gain support from musicians who will also be performing including Ruby Doos; Dave Kirk; Daryl Kirkland; The Jigantics (acoustic); David Wyatt/Andy Wale Acoustic and Harriet Endersby. Headlining the day is the Jim Moray Trio. Jim Moray is amongst England’s finest interpreters of traditional song. A five-time BBC Folk Award winner, his songs have been featured in a season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, he has appeared onscreen singing a specially composed song for Dr Who spin-off Class as aliens attack the earth, and he has presented documentaries on traditional music for BBC Radio 3.

On the evening of Thursday August 8th Quantum Theatre will also be performing an adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic A Mid Summer Night’s Dream. The performance starts 7pm and with the opportunity to access the Ruins an hour before performances start - it is a great way to spend a summer’s evening.

Peter Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Park Trust, said, “The Ruins are a perfect venue for a great event within the Park. Our Summer Season of shows and performances offers something for everyone.

The Proms Spectacular will feature a concert with Leicestershire’s Bardi Wind Orchestra on Saturday 17th August. The evening of popular and traditional music will thrill and entertain the whole family. The Ruins open from 5.30pm allowing people to enjoy a picnic in this magnificent location. The concert will show a lighter side of the symphonic band’s repertoire with selections from shows, the movies, TV themes and pop music, as well as the traditional sea shanties and proms music that thrill and engage audiences. Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019 The Summer Reading Challenge 2019 theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children taking part in the Challenge will join our super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Challenge celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. How it works - Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there's a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school aged children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers. Throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff and teenage and adult volunteers support children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books. The Challenge will launch in libraries in England and Wales on Saturday 13 July 2019.

£5,800 raised at a dog walk with a difference in Naseby DOGS and their owners enjoyed a walk with a difference on Sunday 23 June, taking part in fun dog show classes along the walk to raise vital funds for Canine Partners. The Walking Dog Show, a new concept for Canine Partners, raised £5,800 for the charity and took place at Naseby Lodge, Northampton, on Sunday 23 June as a unique take on a classic dog show. “A good crowd of people came along to enjoy the event, which was really fun, engaging and a little bit different,” says Cat Howourth, Events Fundraiser at Canine Partners, who organised the event with a supporter who hosted the event in the grounds at her home, Naseby Lodge. The six judging stations around the route included Cutest Canine and Best Ears. “The Best in Show category was won by a beautiful working cocker called Huckleberry, he won the Waggiest Tail category before going on to win overall,” says Cat. “Events like our Walking Dog Show are vital for raising awareness of the charity whilst raising money to transform the lives of people living with physical disabilities across the UK.” Canine Partners is a national charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. The charity’s next local event, a Family Fun Pet Dog Show and BBQ, will take place at their Midlands Training Centre in Osgathorpe, Leicestershire, on Saturday 27 July 2019. Please visit caninepartners.org.uk/event/canine-partners-midlands-centre-bbq-family-funpet-dog-show/ to find out more.

The Family Obstacular - a Big Day Out! BRADGATE ROTARY’S Family Challenge Day takes place on Sunday 15th September.

The way to put the whole thing right And make the future clear and bright Is not with pills or double gins But more to do with spiky pins A hedgehog massage springs to mind A startling image that I find A shade disturbing, too extreme We need to find another scheme And then after a day or so of puzzlement, I said I know I'll find an acupuncturist I've read somewhere that they exist In arms and legs they'll stick a pin And set small fires upon your skin They'll listen carefully to your woes Then stick some more pins in your toes But if that sounds a little rough They’ll douse the flames, just shout ENOUGH!! And overall I think you'll find That underneath they are quite kind They never ever make you squeal They really want you just to feel Not worse, or even just the same But better than when first you came A Kirby Lad

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US? The Family Obstacular or Family Funtacular will be taking place in a new location in the Charnwood Forest. Fun and Family are the key words, this is NOT a mud, blood guts and glory event, but something to bring out the competitiveness without the pain while raising funds for some of our local charities. Alongside the challenges, there will be opportunities to enjoy a day out with stalls, bouncy castle and food options. Not everyone will need to take part in the challenges to appreciate the day, but we suspect you might want to anyway.

We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk

So pencil on the family calendar the date and watch this space for more details of the Family Obstacular on Sunday 15th September.
