Mayoral Year It has been an honour to serve as the Borough Councils Mayor for the past year. I want to thank my wife Jenny for her support she has attended every event with me as the Mayoress. I must say we were both proud to represent the Borough and Ratby where we have lived for the past 30 years. One of my final duties was to hold my Civic service at St Phillips and St James Parish Church in Ratby, I want to thank everyone involved particular mention to Ed Bampton the rector, Ratby Co-Operative Brass Band and last but not least the wonderful choir from Ratby Primary school you were magnificent and  a credit to both the school and your parents. Over the year I raised just over £5300 for Charity £1200 of that was raised by my 40yr old son Loz running 620 miles over 22 days in March. I have sent a cheque for £2600 to MNDA locally and £2700 to the Gurney fund that helps children of officers either killed on duty or forced to retire trough ill health.

Concrete Guttering Please be aware that residents in this area have been receiving letters from a company suggesting that they had a contract with the Council, HBBC to replace guttering. However, HBBC have had no dealings whatsoever with this company. Ratby has a number of properties with this type of guttering. If you receive a letter stating that the company concerned has been let down by a delayed contract they had with HBBC I can assure you that this is not true. The letter will go onto say that the works to your home will be completed by the end of June and also offers 12 months interest free option to pay. This is a scam, if you receive such a letter please let us know Trading Standards advice is best to always be wary of such approaches. If you do require work doing on your home, always seek more than one quote and listen to recommendations from friends and neighbours who have received good service from a company in the past rather than unsolicited letters or doorstep sellers. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards

Chris & Ozzy

Working for you.

CORPORATE SUPPORT IS A VITAL ELEMENT TO KEEPING OUR CENTRE RUNNING. Woodside Animal Centre is the home of RSPCA Leicester Branch and is one of the county’s oldest established charities. Did you know, it costs £19,500 per week to run our centre? The work we do and the impact we have on both the animals and the local community, can only be successfully achieved with the support of local people and businesses within Leicestershire and Rutland. Developing Corporate Partnerships with local businesses is an essential part of the fundraising we do.

Kirby Kings Under 15's Win Presidents Cup On Sunday 20th May, Kirby Kings Under 15’s took on Leicester Bharat FC in the Presidents Cup Final on Loughborough Dynamos senior pitch. Ratby Parish Council Report

England World Cup Fixtures

As well as all the ongoing housekeeping of the village streets, pathways, parks etc. the council have now taken over management of the village allotment sites and are currently in the process of updating the records of everyone who has rented one. If you have an allotment and have not yet been contacted by us, please can you call or visit the office and inform us of your details. There are some plots still available so if you are interested in taking one let us know. You will notice some groundworks taking place at Ferndale Park shortly. These are for the installation of CCTV to enhance the parks security especially overnight. Hopefully, this will help reduce any anti-social behaviour we have experienced in the past. We are organising a fabulous event on 7th July 2018 at Ratby Sports Club called the Crow Pie Festival. It will be the biggest village fete for years with live music (inc. Ratby Band), plenty of other entertainment, lots of food and drink, a fire engine and many, many stalls. It will be great fun for all the family so please make a note in your diary and come. The event is supported by the Sports Club, Ratby Church, Methodist Church, Ratby Primary School, the WI as well as other local organisations.

KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB Well, summer is just about here, with a few false starts along the way. We have been in operation for a little over a year and are really pleased to be able to say that we have managed to be fully staffed at all times, with not a single session missed. We have increased library membership by a stunning 62% and have issued over 12,500 books during that time. This latter figure does however represent a bit of a fall over the previous year, mostly in adult loans, and we would urge people to make full use of the service on offer. Books are issued for 3 weeks, and you can borrow up to 24 at any one time. If the particular book you want is not available, we can usually get it in for you. We would urge you to consider using the library, particularly for children, who can browse the excellent selection at their leisure, and develop an appreciation of books and reading.

Dementia Awareness The dementia awareness event in mid-May worked really well, with over 100 people attending and learning how to make contacts if they or their friends/relatives show signs of dementia, the sorts of activities that might be appropriate, how to set up powers of attorney and other essential information. This is exactly the kind of event that, as part of community development, we should be running, and we are immensely grateful to all those who took part and in particular to Penny and Tom Wright, who put in a huge amount of effort.

Donations Having had a large book sale, we are now building up our resources once more and would be very grateful to receive any donations of books and DVDs in good

condition. We sell paperbacks for 50p each, hardbacks for 75p and DVDs for £1.00 – really good value if you are going to be stuck on a plane for hours en route to holiday destinations.

see if we can do even better this year. More details to follow.

Forthcoming Events

As last year, we are happy to receive any excess garden produce you may have, which people can take, hopefully but not necessarily for a donation. Again, this seems like a very appropriate activity for bringing the community together and helping each other.

Board Games sessions start at 4.00 pm on Monday 4th June. Children’s games are included. We are planning to hold a yard sale in late September – details to follow but start putting aside all those things you want to get rid of. And in October, we shall be running a quiz night plus fish and chip supper at the Library. Again, details to follow.

Cafe

And finally............

Our cafe is increasingly popular, particularly when it is combined with our coffee mornings, which take place on the 4th Saturday of every month. Liz and Louis’s home-made cakes are gaining an enviable reputation – do come along and try one on our next coffee morning on Saturday June 23rd. Ice creams will be added to the things you can buy very shortly. We now want to give the cafe a name and we are running a competition with a £10.00 book voucher as a prize for whoever comes up with the best. Entry forms are available in the Library.

We cannot stress too strongly that all the above could not be happening without the contribution made by our very splendid band of volunteers, all of whom have been absolutely marvellous in terms of their time, effort and enthusiasm. We are truly grateful to them and will be holding a celebratory evening on June 14th for all our existing volunteers (plus any who join before the 14th!) to thank them for their efforts. Drinks and desserts will be available. If you are one of our volunteers, please come! We always need more volunteers, so if you are interested in joining this friendly and cheerful group, pop into the Library to talk to us and fill in a volunteer form.

Summer Reading Challenge

STOP PRESS!

This will start on July 7th. The scheme promotes children’s reading activities over the summer holidays and children successfully completing will receive a medal and certificate. Kirby Muxloe kids did exceptionally well last year and it would be good to

Popular money course to run again

Local Couple Tie The Knot Paphos in Cyprus y was the chosen location for the wedding of Kirby muxloe couple Russ and Katie Shepherd. The couple chartered a 30m yacht for the ceremony and reception and also an open top double decker bus to transport the guests to the harbour and back to the amphora suites where everybody enjoyed the week long stay, giving everyone a chance to frequent the local restaurants and bars.

Popular money course to run again as people say they need tactics to cope with the age of austerity.

The wedding took place in the paphos harbour then the 30 plus family and guests enjoyed a short sail away to a nearby quiet bay for the celebrations, although with an open bar and 20 bottles of champagne the bay didn’t stay quiet for very long!! The day itself was absolutely perfect with beautiful weather and thankfully calm seas!! Russ’s father, Keith gave the beautiful bride away which h was a blessing for Russ, the best man was Luke, Russ’s son, bridesmaids were Katie’s daughters Cora and Scarlett. Maid of honour was good friend of the couple, Leona D Dewsbury and usher was Kirby man and good friend, Charlie Singh. gh. Witnesses were Kirby couple, Kev and Patsy Dalzell and d the superb photography was done by Russ’s old school friend, end, John

Tuesdays 4th/11th/18 September 2018 at 7.30pm As part of our local Churches Together group Kirby Muxloe Free Church has partnered with Christians Against Poverty to offer CAP Money courses in our community. The service is completely free.

Russ said that the whole week was a total success, thorroughly enjoyed by all. The wedding took place on April 27th, 2018 at 6pm.

The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. It is a simple, yet highly effective money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that really works. This course will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can save, budget, spend, give and avoid money problems. Enjoy a welcome in the Living Room at Kirby Muxloe Free Church where there is free off-road parking at the rear of the church building. Each course has three sessions of about 2 hours including a refreshment break. The format is informal with short video clips, discussion, money saving tips and some practical problem solving. By attending this course you will be provided with online tool to use during and after the course as well as course material to refer to, to use and to take away. To find out more you can visit www.capmoney.org.uk where all the available cap money UK courses can be found, and you can book directly online to the course of your choice or you can also request an online booking link from kirbycapmoney@gmail.com for your local course while places are available or call the church office on 0116 239 3173 for more information.

By around 1975, the building was used as the home of Castle Playgroup, which was initially run by Pat Carr and another person for a short time and then by Margaret Linklater and the late Margaret Blunt. Before too long, the group had been taken over by Barbara Roberts and Wendy Hammond. They moved the group to the Sports Club, since the floor in the original building needed some work to make it sound and to comply with Health and Safety Standards. By around 1980, and as soon as the improvements were complete, the Scout Troup moved from their old a wooden hut below the Free premises, Church, to the newly refurbished building. So, present day. The building we come to the is still home to the 15th Leicester Scout Troop, which was formed in 1911 by H.O. and Ernest “Teddie” Wilshere. Quite a history!

Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hello everyone and it’s nice to welcome some better weather all be it a little indifferent at times. Things have really started to pick up at the club over the last few weeks and the weather certainly helps. We have had a steady diary with lots of parties being booked right through to year end. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate West Leicester Panthers FC for winning the Sunday Mutual League and gaining promotion to Division 2, the Panthers are a group of local lads who have only been formed for 2 years and have used our facilities this season due to not having a home. I am delighted to announce that things have gone so well that they have agreed to join up with the Sports Club as we restructure our football section from under 7’s right through to the seniors, we will be under one banner and will now be known as Ratby Panthers! This will give us a new start and new identity moving forward and for anyone thinking we are breaking any tradition may I remind you that when the junior section was first formed in 1979 we were known as Ratby Rovers FC, I myself played for the Rovers and our colours were all sky blue, in 1982 we rebranded and became Ratby Groby FC again I also played for these, we stayed as RGFC for a considerable time, club colours were sky blue tops navy blue socks and shorts, we then became Ratby Sports FC and had a complete change and went to all red colours. The name has remained the same for 20 years but the colours have deviated during that time and finished with black and red stripe tops, black socks and shorts. Over the last 20 years there has been lots of mismanagement and our team numbers have dwindled over the last 5 years, Ratby used to be and should be a main player in junior and senior football and by rebranding the football section I feel sure we will be back to where we belong our new team colours are purple tops, black shorts and socks.....the futures bright the future purple! What pleases me the most is the other evening I was sitting in the early evening sunshine watching the cricket boys practising, looking round I could see the archers practising on the main football pitch, the Panthers were just turning up to practise on the top field and the Kettlersise group were just finishing up in the club house, one of the cricketers were leaving for the away fixture for the recently formed RSC pool team and then have a conversation regarding a new Saturday senior league football team, this is what it's all about and why i originally wanted to get involved at the club again...the clue is in the title Ratby SPORTS Club!! Update on the RSC Pool team, they have had an indifferent start to the season, drawn 2, won 1 and lost 1 so not to bad, keep an eye out for when the fixtures are and come and show your support. The cricket teams have not had such a good start, both the first team and second team sit at the bottom of there respective leagues but I am confident the lads will turn it round and soon. All Star Cricket for the juniors on a Tuesday evening is going great guns and at last count there was 39 children in attendance at the last session. Ratby Ninjas Kickboxing on a Saturday morning is also going great guns so much so Faisal is going to start an 11+ group to include adults, more information on this will be available soon, look out on our Facebook page for details. The Crow Pie Festival 7th July is fast approaching and it’s not to late to put your name down for a stall or get involved, lets keep our fingers crossed for some nice weather it should be a great occasion and one to bring the village together for a day of fun. A reminder if you needed reminding the greatest show on earth the World Cup starts on 14th June we have had another screen installed so come and see all the action and savour the atmosphere with our surround sound. We are hosting the Chris Gray football tournament on 9th June in memory of Chris who sadly lost life in Afghanistan in 2007 fighting for his country, Chris played football for the Sports Club and Helen is still involved, gone but never forgotten! It’s great we are seeing some new faces and some old ones coming to pay us a visit, please note you do not have to be a member to come and have a drink and watch some sport. Let sport be the ultimate winner!

Best Regards Garry For information about booking us for parties, groups, seminars, functions phone 07425575884 Please follow us on our Facebook page to keep up to date with what’s happening in the future.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Honoured To Have Been Elected Chairman of Leicestershire County Council At the annual meeting of the County Council on Wednesday 16th May, I was elected the 44th Chairman of Leicestershire County Council. I was humbled to have been elected to such an honourable position after just finishing serving 12 months as the Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth. Jenny and I will be proud to represent Leicestershire over the next 12 months.

earth works and construction traffic working on Sacheverell Way opposite the Laundon Way junction in Groby. I visited the site and was told they were upgrading the foot path to line up with the old railway line. I checked with my planning officers at the County Council who also visited the site to investigate the works. Officers confirmed that contractors are upgrading the Ivanhoe line on behalf of Wilson Bowden Properties, a planning condition of the Optimus Point development in Glenfield. This will improve footpath links. They have a 13 week works programme to carry out these works. They currently have a permit to use Stop/Go boards as required on Sacheverell Way to assist deliveries going in and out of their compound.

Vehicle Crime Ratby and Groby I would again remind van owners to please remove your tools and electrical equipment from your vehicles overnight. I appreciate it is a hassell to do this, but it will save you in the long run. Unfortunately there are thieves that have no morals and will break into your van and take whatever tools and goods they find. One such incident happened over the night of Friday 11th May. I believe 11 vans were attacked between the two villages. I have spoken with the police and they happened in various locations and they do not believe these targeted attacks can be attributed to darker streets. They are currently investigating these offences.

Local residents will know that I have been working with both the police and the Borough Council over the past 2 years to try and resolve the lewd sexual anti behaviour taking place around Groby Pool. I arranged a meeting with Council officers including the Anti-Social Behaviour Manager from the Borough Council the Police, Borough Councillors and members

of the Parish Council on Tuesday 22nd May. It was unanimously agreed to look at other ways to put a stop to this behaviour. One such proposal was to close the car park on a temporary basis from Monday to Friday allowing the car park to open at weekends for families to enjoy the area. This measure as I said is temporary and will operate up until the school holidays

TSB Customers Please Be Aware of Phishing Attacks. There has been a sharp rise in fraudsters sending out fake text messages (smishing) and phishing emails claiming to be from TSB. The increase in the number of reports corresponds with the timing of TSB’s computer system update, which resulted in 1.9 million users being locked out of their accounts. Opportunistic fraudsters are using TSB’s system issue to target people with this type of fraud. Since the start of May there have been 321 phishing reports of TSB phishing made to Action Fraud. This is an increase of 970% on the previous month. In the same reporting period, there have been 51 reports of cybercrime to Action Fraud which mention TSB – an increase of 112% on the previous month. Fraudsters are commonly using text messages as a way to defraud unsuspecting victims out of money. Known as smishing, this involves the victim receiving a text message purporting to be from TSB. The message requests that the recipient clicks onto a website link that leads to a phishing website designed to steal online banking details. Although text messages are currently the most common delivery method, similar communications have been reported with fraudsters using email and telephone to defraud individuals. In several cases, people have lost vast sums of money, with one victim losing £3,890 after

initially receiving a text message claiming to be from TSB. Fraudsters used specialist software which changed the sender ID on the message so that it looked like it was from TSB. This added the spoofed text to an existing TSB message thread on the victim’s phone. The victim clicked on the link within the text message and entered their personal information. Armed with this information, the fraudsters then called the victim back and persuaded them to hand over their banking authentication code from their mobile phone. The fraudsters then moved all of the victim’s savings to a current account and paid a suspicious company. Protect Yourself: Don’t assume an email or text is authentic: Always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Phone numbers and email addresses can be spoofed, so always contact the company directly via a known email or phone number (such as the one on the back of your bank card). Clicking on links/files Don’t be tricked into giving a fraudster access to your personal or financial details. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected text or email. Remember, a genuine bank will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your full PIN or password. If you have received a suspicious TSB email, please do not respond to it, report it to us www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_phishing and also forward it to emailscams@tsb.co.uk

TSB Port Out Alert From Action Fraud There has been an increase in reports made in May by TSB customers relating to “port-out” fraud. Fraudsters are number porting a victim’s telephone number to a SIM card under their control and then using the number to access the victim’s bank accounts. The increase in the number of reports corresponds with the timing of TSB’s computer system update, which resulted in 1.9 million users being locked out of their accounts. Opportunistic fraudsters are using TSB’s system issue to target individuals, which follows the increase in phishing and smishing communications also targeting TSB customers this month. Victims’ bank account and personal details including their phone number are collected by the fraudster, providing them with the information to execute the fraud. Number porting is a genuine service provided by telecommunication companies. It allows customers to keep their existing phone number and transfer it to a new SIM card. The existing network provider sends the customer a Port Authorisation Code (PAC), that when presented to the new provider allows the number to be transferred across. This service can, however, be abused by fraudsters. To gain control of the victim’s phone number, fraudsters convince the victim’s mobile phone network provider to swap their number on to a SIM card in the fraudster’s control. Once the

fraudster has control of the number they are able to intercept the victims’ text messages, allowing them to use services linked to the victim’s phone number. This can include requesting an online banking password reset or access to any two factor authentication services. Victims have reported large losses as a result of this fraud. One victim initially dismissed text messages received from their network provider containing a PAC number. Two days later £6,000 was removed from the victim’s TSB current account. The victim subsequently contacted their phone provider and was informed that someone contacted the provider purporting to be the victim and had cancelled their contract and transferred their number to a new SIM. This action allowed the banking fraud to take place. Protect Yourself: PAC Code notifications If you receive an unsolicited notification about a PAC Code request, contact your network provider immediately to terminate the request. Also notify your bank about your phone number being compromised. Requests to move money: A genuine bank or organisation will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your PIN, full password or to move money to another account. Port-out Fraud versus SIM Swapping Port-out fraud is often incorrectly referred to as SIM swap fraud. SIM swap fraud works in a similar fashion, however, instead of porting the victim’s number to a new network provider, the fraudster impersonates the victim and requests a new SIM card for their account. Once they have access to the new sim, they have access to the number.

HMRC Warns On Tax Return Scams It has come to my attention that there has been a number of emails circulated by possible scammers pretending to be from Inland Revenue for Tax Rebate. On the email they will tell you that you are owed money back as you paid too much tax. There is a link you would click on where you will be directed to a page to enter your personal details. I have been told there is a section where they will ask for your card details and the 3 digit security code that’s on the back of your card. Under no circumstances should you give out any personal details and I would advise you to contact the Inland Revenue directly. For more information please visit the link below. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ hmrc-warns-on-tax-refund-scams Alternatively you can also contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or report online via link below. www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

TV Providers Discount Fraud

reports where fraudsters are offering a discount on Television service provider subscriptions. Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, purporting to be from a Television (TV) provider offering a discount on their monthly subscription. Victims have been told the following: their subscription needs to be renewed; that part or all, of the TV equipment has expired and they are due an upgrade on the equipment/subscription. In order to falsely process the discount, the fraudster asks victims to confirm or provide their bank account details. The scammers may also request the victim’s identification documents, such as scanned copies of passports. The fraudsters are using the following telephone numbers: “08447111444”, “02035190197” and “08001514141”. The fraudster’s voices are reported to sound feminine and have an Asian accent. Later victims make enquiries and then discover that their TV service provider did not call them and that the fraudster has made transactions using the victim’s bank account details. This type of fraud is nationwide. Since the beginning of this year (2018), there have been 300 Action Fraud Reports relating to this fraud. From the reports received, victims aged over 66 seem to be the most targeted. What you need to do • Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic: Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother’s maiden name), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Criminals can exploit the names of wellknown companies in order to make their scams appear genuine. • Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision: a genuine company won’t force you to make a financial decisions on the spot. Always be wary if you’re pressured to purchase a product or service quickly, and don’t hesitate to question uninvited ap proaches in case it’s a scam. • Stay in control: Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. Always contact the company yourself using a known email or phone number, such as the one written on a bank statement or bill. Visit Take Five (takefive-stopfraud.org.uk/advice/) and Cyber Aware (cyberaware.gov.uk) for more information about how to protect yourself online. Finally I would like to thank you all for your continued support and remind you that should you need my help or advice, I always pride myself on making myself available to residents. Remember I am only a phone call or email away.

Girls County Cup Triumph

LFE Film Evenings

Brookvale Groby Learning Campus Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 Grls Football Teams were both crowned Team Leicestershire County Champions at Harborough Town FC on Thursday 10th May!

LFE Film Evenings will not be showing any films in July or August (our summer break). Normal service will be resumed on 6 September 2018.

The Year 8/9 girls ran out 5-1 winners against Belvoir Academy. Brookvale Groby played tremendous football during the first half, with three goals to match. Mackenzie Smith opened the scoring with a spectacular strike with Darcy Warden adding a brace to give Brookvale Groby a three goal cushion at half-time. The second half proved to be a tighter affair with Belvoir pulling a goal back. This proved to be a consolation when Mikayla Wildgoose scored direct from a 25 yard free kick. Dulci Binns completed the scoring towards the end of the game. The Year 10/11 girls won 4-2 in a tight contest against Ashby School. Ashby took the lead against the run of play with an excellent strike from distance. Brookvale Groby hit back with Harleen Thandi equalising having earlier hit the post. Tilly Clark struck late in the first half to send Brookvale Groby in at half-time ahead. We continued to create chances, but Ashby looked dangerous on the break. They equalised with another excellent goal from distance leaving Lana Timson in goal with little chance. The game took another swing when an inswinging Elspeth Cunningham corner was turned home by Rebekah Garratt. Ashby again threw everything at the Brookvale Groby defence, but they held firm against a number of corners. From one of these corners Lana Timson made a good save followed by a quick counter attack that led to Harleen Thandi breaking away to put the game beyond doubt.

Well done to all who were involved. Of the ten football finals held by Team Leicestershire this year, we have appeared in four and won four! A fantastic achievement by our football teams and we still have the matter of the Year 8/9 girls futsal regional finals!

100 years old The library has 4 computers for customers use and volunteers will help with printing material on the colour/black and white printer. We are careful not to see what is being printed. But on one occasion recently I could see that I was copying a Birth Certificate. It was for a lady who was soon to be 100 years old and the copy was to be sent to the Queen to request the 100 year old congratulatory letter. The use of the printers is free of charge and you can access your own emails ideal if needing to print off flight boarding passes etc. and you don’t have a printer yourself. Printing/copying costs 20p for A4 black and white, 40p for colour. A3 is also available. While in the library why not take advantage of the Crow Pie Café for a drink and a piece of cake.

Crow Pie Café I know I have said this before but the Café is our main funding stream to keep the library going. But it does provide a very pleasant environment to meet friends or have a break while walking back home from a shopping trip into the village. Prices are very reasonable. With tea at 80p coffee at £1.00, drinking chocolate £1.00, Latte and Cappuccino £1.30 a slice of cake costs £1.00 a range of other confectionery is also available, particularly for children.

Cream Teas at St Bart’s Church Kirby Muxloe We would like to welcome you to our lovely Church this summer.

Stephen Roche is continuing to host the monthly Quiz evening. The next one is on Friday June 20th at 7.30pm. The winners of the May Quiz won a meal for 2 at the Plough Inn, Ratby. Many thanks to them for donating this prize. We are delighted that attendance has reached 23 for the event having been increasing month on month. Some people bring their own Alcohol to drink but the Café is open for those who don’t.

Book Club The next meeting is on 18th June and the book chosen for this month is Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I can remember reading some of his books myself and being intrigued by the breadth and depth of the story line. Wendy Deeping is your host and can be contacted on 0116 2390 227.

Wriggly Readers While on duty recently I listened to the stories and nursery rhymes, and I confess to quietly joining in with the singing. It took me back to my own children nearly 50 years ago. Lisa Collins and several other mums continue to provide this free opportunity to bring babies and pre-school children to an hour of active fun, and drawing. The June meetings will be on the 14th and 28th. There is no charge for this but purchases from the Café would be appreciated.

Volunteers I must apologise to anyone who found the library closed on Wednesday 30th May. This

As you already know we are always inviting new volunteers to join us. This need not be to work on the Library. You may think that the Café would be where you fit in or come and talk to me about any other of the tasks; the Grounds, Cleaning, or maintenance. These are all important tasks. Shifts are 10.00am to 01.15pm and 01.15 (6.30pm on Wednesdays) and 10.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays. With more volunteers available we would consider reducing the length of the shifts. Visit the library, talk to a volunteer and get an application form or call me for a chat.

Dance and Musical Theatre

Ratby Primary School PSA

Over the last half term, a group of pupils from Years 5 and 6 have been attending a Dance and Musical Theatre workshop after school on Monday afternoons. They have all really enjoyed learning new routines and being involved in Musical Theatre performances and worked hard to perfect their moves! They showed off what they had learnt in an assembly on Wednesday 23rd May to the rest of Key Stage 2 and their families. The audience were very impressed with the performances and have hopefully been inspired to get involved in any future opportunities!

The PSA (Parents and Staff Association) of Ratby School are a team of Parents who work collaboratively with the School Staff to raise funds to help enhance the children’s learning experience. We (the PSA) use all funds raised to help pay for ‘in school’ learning experiences and to help pay for class trips including the Christmas Pantomime, Young Voices and we also provide new school book bags for Foundation Stage new intake each August. We are currently planning a Curry night at Harrison Spice in Ratby, which will be held on 13th June, £15.00 for a three-course meal – please join us for a fun evening and bring a friend! We are also very busy planning our Summer Fayre which will be on 9th June 12.30 –3pm where we will having lots of fun including tombola tables, bouncy slide and castle, an Events arena, burgers, cream teas and a bar. It promises to be a great event – please come along, the raffle prizes are GREAT!

Year 1 – Moon Zoom

Year 1 have been working really hard this week designing and building Spaceships to send the lost alien home. First we designed and built our rocket. This took some careful teamwork and communication skills as we worked with our partners. Then we wrote some instructions so the alien knew how to repair his rocket if it crashed again! It was great fun and we can’t wait to get the alien home safely.

HEALTHMATTERS KEEP YOUR SKIN SAFE IN THE SUN Almost everyone loves the sun. The rays of the sun make us feel good and we feel happier. Although the sun’s short term effects make us feel great, in the long term it can cause damage to the skin which can ultimately be fatal. UVA and UVB rays from the sun can cause many problems and potentially the worst problem they can cause is skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, around 100,000 people a year are diagnosed with it in the UK. More than 12,000 of these cancers are malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Each year, around 2,200 people die from skin cancer. Skin cancer can affect anyone, but people most at risk have fair skin, red or fair hair, moles or freckles, personal or family history of skin cancer, or might have already had sunburn when young. People with naturally brown or black skin are less likely to get skin cancer as darker skin has some protection against UV rays. However, skin cancer can still occur. In order to prevent skin cancer it is essential to prevent over exposure to the UV rays of the sun, however this does not mean to avoid the sun totally as we require UVB rays to produce vitamin D (needed for healthy bones). It is about striking a balance between the two. Sunburn occurs when there is over exposure to UVB rays. It causes the top layers of skin to release chemicals that make blood vessels swell and leak fluids. Some experts believe that just one episode of blistering sunburn before the age of 20 can double your chance of getting skin cancer. You can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and being sunburnt by protecting your skin with sunscreen. Sunscreens with at least a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 should be used. SPF basically means the amount of time that you can normally spend in the sun without being burnt multiplied by the factor number. So if you have very fair skin and will burn after 10 minutes in the sun, by applying a SPF cream of 15, you can then roughly have 150 minutes of sun

30

exposure without being burnt. (10 minutes multiplied by factor of 15 equals 150 minutes.) Sun protection factors are a rough estimate and will vary according to numerous other factors such as intensity of sun, colour of skin, amount of cream applied etc. At the Village pharmacy we have special offers on many sunscreens and sunburn products for the summer. The following advice should also help in preventing sunburn and skin cancer: • Avoid strong sunlight whenever possible, particularly when the sun is strongest (between 11am and 3pm), and cover up with loose clothing and a hat. • When buying sunscreen, choose one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least factor 15 – the higher the better – that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. • Apply a generous amount of sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply regularly at least every two to three hours. Even water-resistant sunscreens should be reapplied after you come out of the water. • A stick application with a high SPF is useful for exposed areas, such as your nose, ears and lips. These areas tend to burn more easily. • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. If you would like any more information about anything mentioned above please call us on 01162387353 or pop in to the Village Pharmacy Kirby Muxloe where one of our highly trained staff will be happy to help.
