In the Leicester area there are over 32,200 people living with cardiovascular disease which leads to 720 deaths per year. The hard work of our volunteers is vital to raising money, which enable us to fund thousands of ground-breaking research projects across the country. We are calling on people across Leicester and Leicestershire to join our local fundraising groups. Our fundraising groups raise awareness of heart and circulatory diseases and how our work is tackling them. Most importantly, by raising money for the BHF’s life-saving research, they help keep hearts beating and blood flowing - and this will help keep families together for longer.

A DIY Will could be a false economy and an expensive mistake. Everyone is looking to keeps costs to a minimum these days and one way people think that they can save themselves some money is by not having a will and assuming that everything will “work itself out” or by writing one themselves, on a form from a stationers or online. Although either option may save you a few pounds now, it could leave a very expensive mess behind for your loved ones after your death. You need to get it right and wills can be challenged for a number of reasons. If the will has not been properly signed and witnessed, it is invalid. If it is invalid you are left with no will or, perhaps worse an earlier will which is still floating around and which could be used by your family even though it is not what you really wanted. If you have no will the law will dictate what happens to your estate. This may not result in what you wanted to happen to your assets and could lead to people getting a lot more or less than you wanted.
Ratby Church Open on Saturday 6th July 11-30 TO 3pm The Parish Church is a beautiful church with a history that goes back to the 13th century. We have a Yew Tree that grows outside of the north Entrance which has been authenticated as being over 2000 years old.
If the contents of the will are not clear it could cause a dispute about the meaning of the will. It may be that it was written in such a way that there are people such as husbands, wives and children who can make a claim against your estate. This could lead to expensive legal arguments involving lots of different people who all have an interest in your estate. You can use your will to minimise the impact on your estate of Inheritance Tax and you may also be able to protect your share of your house against being used for your surviving partner's care home fees following your death. If you and your partner have children from previous relationships you can use your will to ensure that you make proper provision for all of your loved ones. The cost to your estate of a legal challenge could run to many thousands of pounds, leaving little or nothing to your family after the lawyers have had their pickings. There is no substitute for proper advice to ensure that what you worked all you life to earn ends up where you want it to go and that it does not end up in someone else's hands. For more information, please contact David Boon at Muxloe Wills on 0116 239 2409.
If you would like to see this church and find out more about the history then visit us on this day where you will be able to see an exhibition about the history. You will be able to visit The Church Tower as it will also be open to visitors. Post code: LE6 OJF REFRESHMENTS AVAILABLE

Loneliness Festival of Archaeology Leicestershire & Rutland Festival of Archaeology 2019 week: 17th to 21st June
BRITAIN is in the midst of a loneliness epidemic. A survey by the Jo Cox Commission in 2017 revealed that nine million of us in the UK are affected by it. So, no wonder that last year the Government even appointed the world’s first loneliness minister, Tracey Crouch. And no wonder that the Marmalade Trust aims to raise awareness of isolation in the UK. Loneliness hurts you physically as well as mentally. It has even been said that it can be as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It can raise blood pressure, and cause diabetes and obesity. Technology is a big factor: we send emails rather than talk, we have virtual team workspaces rather than speaking in person. We use LinkedIn and Facebook to keep in touch. One health expert said, “We’re getting out of the habit of actual conversations. People who work from home and who also live alone can go days without speaking to anyone. No wonder that the millennial generation, for whom technology accounts for an increasing percentage of their interaction, are reporting high levels of anxiety. Experts advise that you simply try and make as many social connections as you can, however brief. Make tea for someone at work, or chat to your neighbour.
You are invited on 29th June - 28th July to join in the 2019 Leicestershire and Rutland Festival of Archaeology.
For the first time a month-long chance to discover more about the rich and diverse heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland. The Festival has a fascinating range of activities, events, talks and guided tours from some of the county’s archaeological and historical experts. Local groups will show you their own discoveries and invite you to become involved in making the next great discovery! The Festival in Leicestershire and Rutland is financially supported by Leicestershire Fieldworkers; Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society; Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Forum; CBA East Midlands; Leicestershire Industrial History Society; The Friends of Jewry Wall Museum; Hinckley Archaeological Society; University of Leicester Archaeological Services. Download the full programme of events at: https://leicsfieldworkers.co.uk/festival-of-archaeology/
Keep those knitting needles clicking for the Big Knit! The Big Knit campaign continues throughout 2019 and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to keep knitting or join in for the first time! Now in its 15th year, the campaign still needs to recruit more knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats nationwide to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit another 26,000 miniature hats to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target by July 2019 (even though the campaign continues all year round). It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area. “The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men/Women in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun. For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/. Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres. This year’s hat knitting patterns are available to download - to find out more visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/bigknit or pop into any of our addresses to request a leaflet

Church Road On 20th May, 1897, the new Nonconformist Church was built on the corner of Main Street and an unnamed road. The road became “Church Road”. The church adopted the new name of “Free Church” as it was felt that the name “nonconformist” had rather negative connotations. The church, built by local builder George Mason, was a beautiful building and stood there until sadly, it was razed to the ground during the bombing of November 19/20th 1940. The new church reopened in 1953, with Joy Hawke (née Poyner) and her husband the first couple to be married there. The scout hut (a wooden building) was, for many years, situated behind the Free Church schoolrooms, in the car park. People would often hear the familiar sound of the boys chanting the Grand Howl, “dyb dyb dyb” (Do your best)- response- “We’ll dob dob dob” (We’ll do our best), as they passed by in the evenings.
a very popular place, especially for the young people of the village. We are told that many romances started in Harry’s shop. The fish and chips were said to be “very tasty”! The shop closed during WW2 and reopened when hostilities had ceased. Around 1950, one penny (old money) bought a generous portion of chips, plus batter “scratching”. Harry worked for Armson and Hollis, a well know firm of builders at the time, and was said to be a good carpenter and a good D.I.Y. person. Harry was as tall as a beanpole, had a slight stutter and was a well-known character in the village. If anything was happening locally, he would be one of the first to know. Harry was said to have had a marvellous sense of humour and would frequently dress up in different costumes. He particularly enjoyed dressing up as a parson which, we are told, he did, on many bus trips to the east coast. Around the 1950’s, on the opposite side of Church Road and near to the top, Mr Hudson, had, according to accounts, a “very nice apple orchard”. We are told that the local boys never seemed to see him picking the fruit, and so thinking that this was a waste of good food, decided to help themselves. However, they had to bypass the flock of hissing geese that were prone to attack anyone venturing into the orchard. Some of the boys at the time devised a cunning plan. Someone would feed potato peelings to the geese, whilst the others scrambled over the fence at the other end of the orchard. The plan generally worked, and they left with a large bag of apples. Did Mr Hudson know that this happened, I wonder! Until more recent years, flocks of geese and hens could still be seen on the land. Several other businesses have come and gone on Church Road. Arthur Lally, painter
and decorator, was at number 20 from 1941 and Heap and Newbold, painters and decorators, were at number 28. The Post Office, after many years being situated on the corner of Barwell Road and Castle Road, moved to Church Road around the early ‘60’s. Herbert Townsend, who had been the village sub-postmaster for 28 years on Castle Road, relinquished his position and the job was taken over by Stanley Jordan from Leicester. Mr Jordan built new premises for the Post Office at the bottom end of Church Road. First, Stanley, then later his wife and son Barry, ran the Post Office. Do you remember the greenhouse situated at the side of the Post Office? It was full of assorted crockery which was sold through the Post Office premises. In later years, Barry Jordan sold fabric by the metre in a shed behind the P.O. building, before eventually giving up the Post Office and opening a large fabric warehouse in Leicester. On 26th May 1986, Malcolm Peck took over as sub-postmaster and by June 1994 had moved to premises on Main Street, where the Post Office remains today. Malcolm retired some years ago. Merlin Pools arrived at 27, Church Road in the late 1970’s, but moved to larger premises around 10 years ago. Finally, in the present day, number 23, Church Road is home to Haircut 2000 and 23a to Kirby Muxloe Podiatry Practice. So today, as in years gone by, these businesses and organisations provide some colour and focus for village activities. Without them, life in our village would have been, and would be today, less interesting – long may they, or their successors, continue.
From the 1903 Parish map, we can see that twelve houses have already been built on the opposite side of the road to the church. Most of the buildings on Barwell Road, Church Road and Castle Road were completed by 1914. The builders for many of the properties were George Mason and his nephew Albert Davey. In the early years, most of the buildings on Church Road were dwelling houses and it was not until around the 1930’s that some commercial activity began to appear. One of the first and well-remembered shops was Harry Webster’s fish and chip shop. The shop was in a wooden shed that fronted 23, Church Road. From the 1930’s onwards it was

their collection folder. They must make two visits to the Library to collect book marks and stickers on their first visit, and a certificate, wristband, medal and more stickers when they complete the challenge. Children aged 0-3 will be able to collect cards and stickers.
We are very pleased to say that our appeal for new volunteers last month has produced four people who have already become valued members of our group. They are going through their induction and training with enthusiasm and we are delighted to have them on board with us. Every year we hold a thank you event for our volunteers, where we bring them up to date with developments, welcome new ideas from them and make sure that they are well-fed and watered. Our new volunteers came along and were made to feel part of the group very quickly. So a big thank you to them, to The Local and Lantern for their help in printing our requests for support, and to our existing body of volunteers who go out of their way to support their new colleagues.
It’s fun, challenging and will give children a focus over the summer holidays. The challenge starts on 6th July until 7th September, so do encourage your children to come along and join in.

We currently commissions services to support people at risk of becoming homeless in Leicestershire. This includes a 30-bed hostel in Loughborough and an outreach service which delivers a combination of telephone support, group work, surgeries for issues such as benefits advice as well as signposting and one-to-one contact. A 12-week consultation, launched on the 23rd May, is seeking views on proposed changes that include retaining the hostel funding, but replacing the current outreach provision with a redesigned in-house community-based service. The proposals are designed to complement the housing-related support that borough and district councils legally have to provide. Looking after people who are homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless, is paramount. “Being homeless has significant negative impacts on both physical and mental health. It is important we do what we can to tackle the health and social issues that increase the risk of becoming homeless. “While these proposals do have a budget saving attached, we believe that providing support for people who are at risk of

Agency to speed up adoption for children in care
Incorporating Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council, the Regional Adoption Agency will work collaboratively across the East Midlands to encourage more people to become adopters, which in turn leads to markedly improving the life chances of children in care. “We want every child to be in the loving, stable home that's right for them, and adoption can transform the lives of these vulnerable children - and their adoptive families - in a remarkable way. By coming together and joining forces councils can use the network to match children with the right families much more quickly.” Ivan Ould, county council cabinet member for children and families

Partnership will give youngsters best chance of finding loving and stable family. A new partnership will offer children in care across the East Midlands the stability and security they need to achieve their potential. The launch of Adoption East Midlands, a regional adoption agency and partnership between local authorities and voluntary adoption agencies, will transform the lives of children and their adoptive families. Every year, Adoption East Midlands will be looking for families for hundreds of children. Across Leicester and Leicestershire, there are currently 44 children looking for an adoptive family. The Government wants the regionalisation of adoption services to accelerate the pace of change to ensure those children, for whom adoption is the right path, are given the best chance of finding a loving and stable family as quickly as possible.
Please be aware I have had 4 residents contact me about annoying Nuisance calls from Scammers telling then they were going to cut off their telephone lines one caller had numerous calls with the caller just changing on digit on their cloned telephone number. Scammers are able to clone local numbers so that it looks like the call is being made locally. I have arranged for trading standards to visit one of the vulnerable victims. I would advise anyone who is having nuisance calls to consider purchasing a BT telephone with a call barring facility. These phones will block unwanted calls. If the phone number isn't in the phone it doesn't allow the call through. The person ringing is asked to announce themselves if they don’t the call doesn't come through. Genuine callers will say who they are and you get the option of answering it or not.

We hope that by attending, those who are less confident when using a search engine to navigate the internet will have an opportunity to develop their skills and confidence. Our children will be hand to help out and share their expertise. Below are the dates we hope to offer sessions. Please note it will be on a first come first served basis, currently one session per adult. Space Chase, Summer Reading Kit Kat Club at Challenge 2019 Ratby School The Summer Reading Challenge 2019 theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children taking part in the Challenge will join our super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens!
We had the pleasure of meeting some of the children who will be starting school with us next year, and to share a kit kat with them.
The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Challenge celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. How it works - Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there's a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school aged children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers. Throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff and teenage and adult volunteers support children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books. The Challenge will launch in libraries in England and Wales on Saturday 13 July 2019.

Kirby Muxloe Free Church Holiday at Home
The Family Obstacular - a Big Day Out! BRADGATE ROTARY’S Family Challenge Day takes place on Sunday 15th September.
Kirby Muxloe Free Church is running its annual Holiday at Home event, from 25th-27th June and welcomes applications by 31st May, to the church office on 0116 2393173.
The Family Obstacular or Family Funtacular will be taking place in a new location in the Charnwood Forest. Fun and Family are the key words, this is NOT a mud, blood guts and glory event, but something to bring out the competitiveness without the pain while raising funds for some of our local charities. Alongside the challenges, there will be opportunities to enjoy a day out with stalls, bouncy castle and food options. Not everyone will need to take part in the challenges to appreciate the day, but we suspect you might want to anyway. So pencil on the family calendar the date and watch this space for more details of the Family Obstacular on Sunday 15th September.

It’s a Trilogy for Lindzi Last year we reported local author, Lindzi Mayann, launched her sassy debut book, Maga High. And we’re pleased to announce it made such a splash she has gone on to release both the prequel and sequel to that original story!
Lindzi said the positive feedback about her main character, Jodie, and the call to know what she did next spurred her on to write the sequel, Educating Jodie, which was published in 0ctober 2018. It tells of Jodie’s return to the UK from Magaluf and features her embarking on a new job in Specialist Behavioural Education! As fans of Lindzi’s work will now know, it can be expected that the sequel is full of shocks, humour and naughtiness as well as the usual warm themes of friendship and learning many of life’s trickier lessons. Pub Life, the prequel, was penned in 2017 but published just this year and introduces Jodie pre-Magaluf. Lindzi explained that when the initial reviews called for more about what happens to Jodie after Magaluf, she decided not to release the prequel and instead write the sequel. But since interest in Jodie has developed, so have the requests to know more about her protagonist- where did this all really begin?
Maga High- an entertaining read with a saucy, summery vibe- is set in Magaluf and features Jodie on her first girls holiday. The wild adventure she finds herself on repairs her following a bitter relationship breakdown and thanks to its craziness yet relatability, the book has been well received over 2018;
In Pub Life, the prequel, Jodie is still a waitress, recently single and living back home with her lovely but worrier mum. She knows she should make more changes but what, a new job or her own home? Between working and drinking at her local she finds entertainment and distraction enough and she embarks on new relationships with varying consequences. New interests and hobbies, new friends- and enemies, a new job, life-lessons! Now you can finally find out exactly what provokes Jodie to
jet off- and not return! Lindzi admits the process of writing, editing and publicising has been tough but she has loved (almost) every moment of her journeycelebrating the wins and learning from the fails. Lindzi explains that writing the stories seems to be the easy part when compared with the effort it takes to promote her work afterwards. She hopes the diverse themes of her books will continue to drive interest and support for her stories. Notably the prequel and sequel aim to raise awareness of the challenges faced by parents of children with autism, with the characters of Cat and her family being further explored. Lindzi recently started her blog- covering everything from travel, to events such as obstacle runs and comedy festivals! She is keen to support local charities, authors and businesses and encourages people to contact her to discuss opportunities for collaborations and for written content. All of her books are available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback formats. Visit Lindzi’s new website www.lindzi.co.uk to find out more. Happy Reading!
Win a copy of Maga High! For your chance to WIN a signed copy of Maga High follow Lindzi’s blog or any of her social media profiles- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and share ONE or more posts to be in with a chance of winning. All entrants will receive a confirmation message from Lindzi and the winner will be announced on July 31st. Good Luck!
Ratby Senior Citizens Cinema Club Venue- Ratby Parish Church, Church Lane LE6 OJF • Friday 14th June at 2pm CHURCHILL follows Britain’s iconic Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the days before the infamous D-Day landings in June 1944. As allied forces stand on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe, they await Churchill’s decision on whether the invasion will actually move ahead. Fearful of repeating his mistakes from World War I on the beaches of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with fulfilling historical greatness, Churchill is also faced with constant criticism from his political opponents; General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery. Only the unflinching support of Churchill’s brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the Prime Minister’s physical and mental collapse and help lead him to greatness. Starring Brian Cox (War & Peace, Coriolanus) as the legendary Winston Churchill, Miranda Richardson, John Slattery, and Julian Wadham. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. “Fun events like our Pie & Peas Quiz Night are vital for raising funds for the charity whilst also raising awareness in the area surrounding our two training centres in the Midlands and in the South, says Helen Watkinson, Head of Community and National Fundraising. “The money raised will enable us to train more amazing dogs and will help us to transform the lives of more people living with physical disabilities. Teams of four to six people are required to take part in the quiz and each team will need to bring one tablet or smart device on the evening. There will be a bar, raffle and other games on the evening, so participants are encouraged to bring some cash so that they can thoroughly enjoy the activities. The event starts at 6:30pm and will finish at 9pm. Supported Lodgings Supported Lodgings is a valuable accommodation option available to young people transitioning from the care system to more independent living. It is family-based support within the homes of members of the community who are willing to provide a spare room to a vulnerable young person aged 16 to 21 who cannot live with their own families and who are not yet ready for independent living. Our service recruits and trains people who can provide appropriate accommodation; this means the young person will have their own room and use of shared facilities.

What's on at Ratby Parish Church in June Church Lane, Ratby, LE6 0JF Hello everyone, I hope everything is all good with you, the summer is in full swing (he types looking out of the window as the rain pours down) there is definantly a feel good factor everywhere, the sun brings everyone out of hibernation and gives everyone a spring in there step. On the sporting front the cricket season is now well and truly in full swing and both the first and second teams have had inconsistent starts but there is still along way to go yet and a lot more cricket to be played, there is always a good turn out on a Saturday afternoon to watch either team and if your ever walking through the village nip in for a cold drink and watch a few overs, we are very lucky to have these facilities in the centre of our village. The All Star Cricket on a Tuesday evening is being well supported and if your child is interested in starting please bring them along to see what it’s all about. Congratulations to the Ratby Town under 13s who have reached the semi final of the junior cup and good luck to them. The football season has now finished and we have had the presentation night which was well attended, congratulations to those that won special awards and a big thank you to the parents for there support during the season your dedication is essential making sure the boys get to training and games, our under 12s were involved in a county cup final at Holmes Park and were very unlucky to lose in a very close game, thank you to the managers and coaches, Kyle Dixon, Spike Stokes, Dan Barber, Phil Cotterill, Oliver Mullins and Ant Ward, these guys give up an awful lot of the spare time coaching the boys and organising everything to ensure everyone has fun in a safe environment. A special mention goes out to Kyle Dixon who has sadly stepped down as the under 15 manager, Kyle has been with the group for some years now but his son Jenson is moving on to a new challenge and with his new
commitments won’t be able to carry on, they go out on a high after winning the league title and we wish them both well, good luck to Spike Stokes who takes over the reigns as manager after being coach for sometime now. The Boroughs Hill Bowmen are back outside shooting on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, if you are interested in trying a new sport nip in to the club and introduce yourself and look at giving it a go. We are delighted to welcome Jade Charles back to the team after her maternity leave, Jade is a popular member of our team so I’m sure a lot of people will be pleased to see her back. The total raised from the Race Night we hosted in aid of Loros was in excess of £6,000 an amazing effort from all involved. We are always looking for new teams and new sports to use our facilities so if you are interested in coming and using our facilities please get in touch. If you have not been down to pay the Sports Bar a visit since our makeover nip in and I guarantee you will be surprised, our new range of drinks including Birra Moretti, Strongbow Dark Fruits, Amstel and John Smiths along with a varied selection of Gins have had rave reviews so come and see what all the fuss is about. We are available for parties, functions and seminars and our facilities are FREE to hire for parties, we are consistently taking booking for through out the year so get in touch so as not to miss the opportunity. We have Sky Sports, Bt Sports and FREE WIFI, FREE Football table, Darts and FREE play Pool. Lets hope for a flaming June and I hope to see you soon, Remember Use it don’t lose it!
Regards, Garry
