Council urges collar and tag awareness

World Scout Jamboree





Blaby District Council is urging residents to ensure they do not fall foul of a law fining dog owners failing to have appropriate identification on their dog.

The Control of Dogs Order (1992) says that a dog in a public place must wear a collar bearing the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. 

As part of the Council’s efforts to make dog owners aware of the law,   the Animal Services will be visiting parks and open spaces across the     district throughout March, before enforcement of the law begins on Thursday 05 April. Michelle Ikin, Senior Animal Services Officer at Blaby District Council, said: “A collar and tag are absolutely vital in ensuring a lost dog can be returned to its owner quickly. Too many times we keep stray dogs for several days, which we wouldn’t have to do if dog owners complied with the law by having a collar and tag on their pet.â€?

Hi, James here with an update for you on my Jamboree fundraising activities. Since my last article in the February  edition of Your  Local, I have   been on my  first unit camp     35   other with  Scouts from Leicestershire who are also going  to the World Scout Jamboree in 2019.

It was a fantastic opportunity to get to know the Scouts I’m going to the Jamboree with, we had a lot of fun despite the cold conditions. Along with three other Scouts, I will be fundraising outside the Royal Bank of Scotland in Leicester town centre on Saturday 10th March. “We appreciate there has been a lot of focus on the microchipping law that came into force in 2016, but it’s important now that we look towards making every dog out in public within the district easily identifiable if it ever does get lost.

Any stray dogs from Thursday 05 April without a collar and tag will be prosecuted. Tags can be bought and engraved from as little as ÂŁ2.50 online, or from pet shops across the local area. George Matthew ‘Tin Tack’ Barkby - cobbler 45, Main Street. Kirby’s last boot maker George Matthew Barkby was born on 29th May 1898. He was the son of Matthew Barkby and his wife Kate, who lived in the Belgrave area of Leicester. The first few years of George’s life must have been traumatic, as his father died when he was one year old and after living with his mother and her family for the next nine years, sadly in 1909 his mother also passed away. By 1911, George was living in Kirby Muxloe with his paternal grandfather, Thomas and his wife Hannah. Thomas and his family had previously lived in Leicester where Thomas was employed as a foreman in a shoe making establishment. It is not clear if Thomas was still an employee at this stage, or if he had already opened his boot maker business in Kirby Muxloe. In the 1912 Trade Directories, Kirby Muxloe had a boot maker named James Barkley. This is such a similar name, it is not clear if this is a spelling mistake on the part of

By passing the budget in February the County Council has provided an additional: £1m to the ‘supporting Leicestershire Families’ fund, £600k for Highways, and a further £100k to support community libraries. All of which, in my view, are deserving of this additional investment.

The Council now has a balanced budget for the coming 2 years and we will see total debt reducing year on year over the next 4 years. Although this isn’t necessarily the most interesting of topics it is vital that we continue to keep a ‘balanced budget’; indeed, as we have seen with Northamptonshire County Council there are dire consequences when local authorities do not ‘live within their means’.

Ratby Primary School News.... 

 

- o finish off our Frozen Kingdom topic, we took part in an Arctic Rescue Mission to save the passengers on a ship which had crashed in the Arctic. This involved a fun afternoon of challenges and teamwork.

Arctic Rescue Mission

Snowstorm - For this activity, we had to pretend that we couldn’t see due to a snowstorm. This meant we had to step over hurdles blindfolded! Our team leader would tell us when to hop over the hurdle and when to take a step. Once we had finished, we would step carefully to the side with our blindfold on. If you removed it, you were disqualified!

- After Snowstorm, we had to use a tent to build a shelter for our team. The shelter would have to be built within 12 minutes and had to fit 2 people inside.

Build a shelter

- All of the passengers were from different countries and we had to match all the languages to their words. The languages were: • French; • Spanish; • German; • Japanese; • Swahili; • Italian. • Hindi; • Mandarin; • Hawaiian; • Korean;

Communicating with passengers

All 9 groups were able to work out that the words were all ‘hello’ in different languages.

Raise the flag - In this activity, Year 6 had to build the tallest tower and put a flag (which each group designed) on the top. The highest tower was 202cm which was from the floor to the ceiling.

- Starting from the fence, we had 3 mats, which we had to leap across, to get to the end. It was 5 meters long and could only step on the mats. You couldn’t touch the floor or you were disqualified and lost points for your team. Cross the ice

Decipher the code (the last activity) - For decipher the code, we had to find numbers hidden around the top and bottom play grounds which gave letters to crack a numbered code. This was the hardest activity because we had to run all around the top and bottom playgrounds and didn’t know where the numbers were! There were 31 cards and some were hard to spot! This was the best part of our Frozen Kingdom topic. We really enjoyed our Arctic Rescue Mission!

Year 5 Tuck Shop Last week saw the opening of our Year 5 healthy tuck shop. For several weeks, we have been planning and preparing for the official opening. Excitingly, we had to set up a business plan that had to be approved by Mrs Bedder and Mrs Jones - we were successful and were loaned £25 to start up our business. Every week, we will be holding a tuck shop with a variety of fresh fruits and snacks. Thankfully, the tuck shop was received and supported enthusiastically by the majority of KS2! Our first week was very successful (we sold out!) and we hope this continues as a permanent feature in school. Year 5

Year 3 and 4 Investigate Shadows!

First we read the story ‘The Gruffalos Child’ and thought about the use of the shadow within it. Then we had lots of fun experimenting with shadows! In groups, we decided what equipment we needed to gather and then we investigated how shadows change size. We enjoyed measuring the shadows and moving the light source (a torch) further away from our object (a cardboard person).  We found out that the closer the  object is to the light source, the bigger the shadow. Afterwards, we used a toy Gruffalo and a mouse to recreate the part in the story where the mouse’s shadow overpowers him!

the residents of Leicestershire.

Please come and see us and say hello if you happen to be in the area. If you wish to get further information or feel you are able to support me, then please email ‘jamesjamboree2019@gmail.com’.

Two desperate people have a wonderful romance, but their political views and convictions drive them apart.

Thank-you so much for your continued support James.

“We appreciate there has been a lot of focus on the microchipping law that came into force in 2016, but it’s important now that we look towards making every dog out in public within the district easily identifiable if it ever does get lost.

Last year saw a total of 58 stray dogs collected by the Council, with 38 of those not having a collar on. Each stray can cost a minimum of ÂŁ67 to collect. Any stray dogs from Thursday 05 April without a collar and tag will be prosecuted. Tags can be bought and engraved from as little as ÂŁ2.50 online, or from pet shops across the local area. To find out more about the new law visit www.blaby.gov.uk/dogs.
