• It is estimated that 1 in 3 people in the UK will care for someone with dementia in their lifetime.

• Swelling of the hands and face, especially around the eyes (swelling of the feet is more common in late pregnancy and probably not a sign of preeclampsia)

• It is estimated that there are 105,000 carers across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland.

• Weight gain of more than five pounds in a week

• 1 in 3 people who die over the age of 65 years have dementia. Dementia now accounts for 11.6% of all recorded deaths in the UK.

• Headache that won’t go away, even after taking medication

• 1 in every 14 of the population over 65 years has dementia

• Nausea or throwing up, especially suddenly, after mid pregnancy (not the morning sickness that many women experience in early pregnancy)

• In the UK 61% of people with dementia are fe male and 39% are male. There are a higher proportion of women with dementia as women tend to live longer, however, this does reverse when considering the data for people with early-onset dementia.

Pre-eclampsia in pregnancyKnow the Symptoms, Spread the Word If you experience any of the following symptoms during your pregnancy or after delivery, call your doctor or midwife right away. Having symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have preeclampsia, but they are cause for concern and require medical evaluation. Signs of preeclampsia, which are often measured by your healthcare provider, include high blood pressure and sometimes protein in the urine.

If you or someone you care for has dementia or you’re worried about your memory or theirs, you can find lots of useful information that may help you on the Leicestershire County Council website https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk /adult-social-care-and-health/dementia-andmental-health/living-with-dementia There is also information available from the Surgery or on their website http://www.ratbysurgery.nhs.uk/ Don't forget if you are a carer and you haven't already done so please tell your doctor

• Changes in vision like seeing spots or flashing lights; partial or total loss of eyesight

• Upper right belly pain, sometimes mistaken for indigestion or the flu • Difficulty breathing, gasping, or panting • overactive or over responsive reflexes. It's also important to know that some women with preeclampsia have NO symptoms or they "just don’t feel right." If you have a sense that something's wrong, even without symptoms, trust yourself and contact your healthcare provider immediately. Please go to the website below for further details or ask your midwife http://www.endingeclampsia.org/ world-preeclampsia-day/

The second half of the meeting will include our A.G.M. – a polite reminder: membership subscriptions of £10 for the year will be due at this meeting.

Kirby Muxloe Primary School Swimming Pool – 1979 - 2019 – 40 years on! Can it really be 40 years since the swimming pool at Kirby Muxloe Primary School was built? The answer is YES! Doesn’t time fly! How many of us as parents, or as children and now parents or even grandparents ourselves, remember the bright orange swimming bag bearing a dolphin motif, full of wet, chlorine-smelling swimwear? Do you remember diligently sewing on the various badges our children had gained after their required swimming tests? So, how did our village manage to get a training pool attached to the school, when so many other surrounding village schools did not? Let’s go back to the late 1960’s. The late John Thacker, headteacher at the time, and a group of parents formed an “Association” in 1967, which would be registered as a charity by 1976. They wanted to harness the energy and goodwill of parents and others in the community, by raising funds to provide extra resources for the school and to arrange educational events (talks, concerts etc.), to further strengthen the community of the school. By 1975, there happened to be a particularly enthusiastic group of parents on the committee who felt that the time was right to tackle a major project. The school was well resourced with a new hall, new classrooms, the best Primary School library in Leicestershire and an enviable academic and sports reputation. At the time, the Leicestershire Education Authority was actively encouraging and contributing to funding for school teaching pools. Schools and communities

were to provide 50% of the cost. This seemed reasonable and it was said that a contribution of £7,500 from school and parents would be sufficient. A meeting was held and fundraising began. Many will remember the fêtes held each September. There were visits from many celebrities over the years, including the Twycross chimps in 1976 and Chris Tarrant (of ATV Tiswas) in 1977. There was a hot air balloon flight, the Flying Squad Parachutists landing on the school field, a Kamikaze Motor Cycle Team, a Human Cannon Act and many other attractions. There were Christmas bazaars, dances, auctions and rummage sales and much more, all raising money for the pool. Do you remember the 10p bricks and the Music Festival? However, sadly, before the required amount had been raised, Leicestershire Education Authority withdrew all grant aid for pools. Times were changing and the UK was in the grip of a major recession. The country had experienced miners’ strikes, the three-day week and high unemployment in the early to mid ‘70’s and although we were recovering slowly by the late ‘70’s, there was still a long way to go. An eventual promise of a £10,000 grant was given by the Sports Council via Blaby D.C. Fundraising continued, but the L.E.A. would not permit building to commence until an amount of £30,000 had been achieved. As will be remembered by many, this was a time of soaring inflation and the amount required now stood at this figure. By January 1978, there was still a shortfall in funding and twelve generous individuals from the village agreed to guarantee £5,000. Although the target had still not been reached, the L.E.A. were persuaded to allow the building to start. In February 1978, building commenced. After several tenders, the eventual builders

chosen were a local company, Messrs D. and G. Green. The Greens themselves were parents at the school. David Green had been involved with the project since the beginning and was the person who drafted the first plan, long before he tendered as a builder. The couple furbished the changing rooms as their personal gift to the school. David and Greta Green now live in Australia but still keep in touch and take an interest in the life of the pool. The eventual total raised, which included late awards of £1,000 from the Parish Council and £3,000 from Leicestershire Education Authority, came to £33,000 to meet the final cost of the facility. The County Architect advised on handover to the L.C.C. that their valuation was £65,000 (£370,000 today). We must never forget the effort made by the original Association, the Parents and Friends Association, parents, community and staff at the beginning of this project and in the intervening years, plus the unfailing support of the late Jim Fisher, County, District and Parish Councillor and Chair of the School Governors at the time. The swimming pool was opened for the community to see on 3 March 1979 and then put in use, though it was only officially opened by the Chair of the Leicestershire Education Committee together with the Director of Education Andrew Fairbairn at the start of the summer term. Today, and for the past 40 years, the pool is and has been used by young and old, by neighbouring schools and as a valuable teaching facility for all the children who attend K.M. school. How lucky we are! Many thanks to Janet Wilkie for her help in writing this article.

Kirby Muxloe Free Church Holiday at Home Kirby Muxloe Free Church is running its annual Holiday at Home event, from 25th-27th June and welcomes applications by 31st May, to the church office on 0116 2393173.

LATEST NEWS FROM THE BANDROOM In May 2020 the Junior Band have been accepted for a return visit to Euro Disney, Paris, where they will perform in the park to the visiting public. Fundraising is already underway and in March they joined forces with members of our Mid Band to give a concert at the Braunstone Civic Centre. A full house enjoyed the concert of Disney classics at which all of the performers were in costume.

BUXTON BRASS BAND CHAMPIONS - The Senior Band competed at the Buxton Opera House on Sunday 26th April and were delighted to be crowned champions, beating opposition from bands from across the country. A special cheer rung out when the band’s Bb Bass player, Matt Wilkins, was awarded a special prize for the best instrumentalist in the section. Matt is currently studying chemistry at Nottingham University but his musical prowess has come through the ranks at Ratby and is now a very fine tuba player. FUND RAISING - As mentioned in the previous article we do run a 200 Club (cost £18 per annum, to join) to help raise funds for the band. There are still a number of places available should you wish to join. There is a monthly prize of £50 together with bumper prizes at Christmas. The winning numbers so far this year are:

Ratby Primary School News.... Easter Service

This year's whole school Easter service took place on Thursday 11th April at the Church of St Philip and St James in Ratby. The church was a hive of activity as everyone got settled ready to hear the story of Easter. The children sang their hearts out to well known Easter songs and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Thank you to Reverend Bampton and friends for making us all feel so welcome and also to parents and carers who joined us for the celebrations.

Hats off to the Foundation Stage Last term the Foundation Stage children took to the stage to perform the musical ‘Hats Off’’ With a wonderful mix of singing, acting and dancing the show was a real hit. The story followed Apple the Pony as she searched for the perfect season to wear her hat, learning about the different seasons along the way. Luckily the Autumn leaves, Shivering Sheep, Bouncy Rabbits and the Party Pigs were on hand to teach her all about the seasons and helped her to find the perfect season to wear her hat - Summer! We are all incredibly proud of all the children who performed amazingly every time.

Kirby Muxloe Local Committee – ‘Tea at the Ritz’ At 2.30pm on Monday April 8th, 98 ladies gathered to enjoy afternoon ‘Tea at the Ritz’ (aka the Kirby Muxloe Golf Club!). Scones, sandwiches, canapes and cakes, as well as pots of tea were provided by Ben’s Kitchen. The event was held to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

T

Roger Cockayne played a medley of songs on the piano, undaunted by the cacophony of chatter! A very successful raffle followed, where over ÂŁ400 was raised. A final rousing sing-along led by our Committee member Diane Wood brought the event to a close.



A magnificent ÂŁ900 was raised for Cancer Research UK and a big ‘thankyou’ goes to Glenyse Graham and Carol Pendlebury for all their hard work organizing the event. This was the first afternoon tea we have held and is unlikely to be the last. Thank you also, to all the 98 ladies for supporting us!

U14 & U15 Boys Football Teams crowned Team Leicestershire County Champions!



On Friday 5th April, Brookvale Groby’s Year 9 and Year 10 Boys Football Teams were both crowned Team Leicestershire County Champions at Harborough Town FC.



WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP A LOCAL SELF FUNDED CHARITY?

Brookvale Groby Boys Year 9 Football Team (pictured right) have now won this trophy for three consecutive years, which is a fantastic achievement. Kyle McAdam opened the scoring for the Year 9’s against Wigston Academy direct from a free-kick near halfway. Wigston hit back and equalised on the stroke of half-time, before Ryan Bush secured a 2-1 victory with a superb first time strike into the top corner. Brookvale Groby Boys Year 10 Football Team (pictured right) had a bad start conceding two goals in the opening quarter. They managed to claw themselves back into the game when Harry Laundon got on the end of a Sam Collins free kick to score, but conceded again straight from the kick-off. This left them with a 3-1 deficit to overcome at half-time. Tino Msipa started the fight back, getting on the end of Luis Parry’s long clearance to head over the goal keeper. Josh Barrett scored the equaliser with a bizarre goal. Another Luis Parry clearance bounced onto the crossbar, twice, falling into Josh’s path allowing him to volley home. It was all Groby now with Jenson Gutteridge and Tino Msipa hitting the bar before Mac Williams had the last word with a far post header from a corner.

RATBY PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council held its Annual Parish Meeting on Wednesday, 17th April 2019

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT – ANNUAL PARISH MEETING – APRIL 2019 As always, the Parish Council has had a very busy year working on residents’ behalf to provide amenities and facilities for the community. I am pleased to announce that as only the existing Councillors applied for re-election, it will not be necessary to vote for a Parish Council, as it was not contested. Grass Cutting - The Parish Council is still undertaking the grass cutting formerly carried out by Leicestershire County Council. However, the Council would ask that if the contractors are cutting the grass in large areas, i.e., Ferndale Park/Burroughs Recreation Ground, if dog owners are in the park at that time, would they please keep their animals under control and out of the way of the mowers. I am sure you will appreciate that mechanical vehicles are dangerous and, for the safety of dog owners and their animals, it is advisable that dogs are on the lead at this time. CCTV-Ferndale Park - The CCTV equipment is now fully operational and regularly maintained.

enormous amounts of carpet and tarmac. The water pump is being replaced and the Parish Council is working on provision of water at the Pear Tree site, having been issued with a notice from Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to remove the container within 3 months. At present Pear Tree site has 3 vacant plots. Churchyard - The ParishCouncil still allocates a sum of money for the upkeep of the Churchyard at St Philip & St James Church.

Village Wardens - The Council’s grateful thanks must be extended to: Neil Glenister - Archaeology Jean Harrison - Badgers Doug Harwood - Heritage Iris Hannaford & Neil Harris - Trees

Ratby Library - The Library is still running the Crow Pie Cafe and the Library. It also holds various Quiz nights and other functions and additionally accommodates the Parish Council for its meetings.

The Parish Council at present has no footpath wardens and no flood warden. Anyone interested in undertaking these duties should please contact the Parish Council Office.

Dog Waste Service - This service is still being carried out by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, who regularly empties the dog waste bins on a weekly basis. Having experienced the rather unpleasant use of the litter bins in the park for dog waste, the Parish Council has now entered into a contract with the Borough Council to undertake the emptying of the litter bins in the parks, at an additional cost. These bins are also emptied on a weekly basis.

Finally, the Parish Council appreciates your support and will continue to work on your behalf to make Ratby a village to be proud of.

Allotments - As reported last year, the Parish Council is now managing both allotment sites at Taverner Drive and Pear Tree, Desford Lane and leases have been signed. The majority of plotholders retained their plots and leases have recently been signed and in view of the state of the work to be carried out in clearing the sites, the Parish Council waived rent during the course of 2018.

Remembrance Day - Last November, the Parish Council provided poppies to place on all the lamp posts throughout the village and also provided a ’Silent Soldier’ silhouette. There was some disquiet about the siting of the ‘Silent Soldier’ but the placing of this was dictated by the fact that it had to be placed in soil and Desford Lane.Main/Street corner was the obvious place. It should also be noted that the Parish Council again financed the insurance for the parade.

A lot of work has been carried out on the Taverner Drive site, including clearing

Flower baskets/containers - The Parish Council again requested the Borough Council to

Ratby Methodistt Church

provide the floral displays for the hanging baskets. The containers throughout the village will be stocked by the Parish Council and will be planted in-house, without the necessity of incurring extra expense.

Thanks should also be expressed to those residents, who regularly litter pick the village, helping to keep our village looking clean and tidy.

Merle B Joyce

Chairman-Ratby Parish Council April 2019 1st May 2019 -ADDED ITEM TO REPORT: Residents may have noticed that several cameras appeared on various lamp posts throughout the village, mainly monitoring Dane Hill, Station Road, Markfield Road, Main Street etc. Please note that Ratby Parish Council was totally unaware of the placement of the cameras and Council contacted Street Lighting at Leicestershire County Council and apparently no permission was given for any cameras to be placed on the lamp posts in Ratby.

Permissive Footpath Groby I have been contacted by residents reporting damage to the fencing along the footpath that runs from the Ivanhoe Trail to Sacheverell Way, Groby. I contacted Savills who are responsible for maintaince of the fence and the footpath who agreed to look into it. On Thursday 2nd May I was contacted by another resident who reported that a horse was tangled in the wire and part of the fence. The resident also contacted the RSPCA and I called the owner who attended and released the horse before the RSPCA arrived. The resident informed me that the RSCPA will be making enquires and a follow up regarding the care of the horses.

Planning Consultation 175 Houses rear of Markfield Road, Ratby. I attended the Library with Chris on Wednesday 10th April to speak with residents and charterhouse to discuss the proposed plans for a development of 175 Houses on Markfield Road, Ratby. The library was packed with residents who were even queuing outside to get in. I can honestly say that no one person we spoke to was in favour of this proposal. Many residents were

concerned about the lack of infrastructure and increased traffic on our already heavily congested roads at peak time. We want to stress that no planning application has yet been received by the Borough Council at the time of writing. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards

Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

THE VILLAGE WRITERS

Art Competition

Are you a writer of any kind? Do you write stories (short or long)? Write poems or songs (soppy or serious)? Are writing memoirs, family biographies or autobiographies? Articles or stories for magazines? Entered competitions for money prizes?

An Artists View of late Victorian and Edwardian Ratby. A competition sponsored by Michael Ball on behalf of The Ratby History Research Group.

Want to improve your writing skills? Share views and laughter with others? Would you like to join a small, friendly, local group looking for new members?

The sponsor has submitted 7 images of Ratby which are on display in Ratby Library. Paint your own interpretation of one or more of these scenes.

We are THE VILLAGE WRITERS and we’ve been writing and meeting locally, together for over three years. We meet 7.30 to 9.30 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, and, although we meet in Kirkby Muxloe, our members are drawn from a much wider area. There’s no special standard you have to reach: An interest in thoughts and words, and the shaping of them in writing, is the only requirement. ‘Homework’ on a particular theme is set each meeting. But there’s no obligation to do it. Perhaps you have something quite different you want to get an ‘audience reaction’ to? Or, sometimes, just to listen to others. That’s one of the key reasons we exist: to get others positive/helpful/creative feedback which can improve our writing. Another is that meeting regularly is a helpful Motivator! How many times have you started, but never finished something, because life was too busy? Perhaps just come along for one session? See if it feels right for you! INTERESTED? Contact Gail on ggmpa123@gmail.com 07557107461 aschons98@gmail.com

Or text/email David on

Use the photocopier in the Library to copy your choice from the display; take them home and let work commence. There is no limit to the number you submit, or the size, or the medium you use. The competition is open to all artists 18 years of age or older, and you don’t have to live in Ratby to enter. Full details and entry forms are available to pick-up from Ratby Library. Display of work and presentation takes place in the Library on Saturday 3rd August between 10am and 1pm.

Complaint To The Seed Supplier Dear Sir, I’d like to know just why, (and how) it is that seeds I buy From your established esteemed shop Turn out to be a complete flop When they've been scattered to the earth I find there is a puzzling dearth Of crops you pictured on the pack (I’d really like to send them back) Of carrots there has been no sign No swedes or leeks on which to dine I fear your workers have indeed Replaced them with those of a weed So where I stood with bated breath Awaiting signs of sprouting veg Instead a thousand thistles came And you’re the man who is to blame My lawyers will write with the aim Of regist'ring a hefty claim Its going to cost you thousands son For all the damage you have done The hurt to feelings I’ve endured The cost of all the ground manured The petrol for the shopping trips For carrots, peas and frozen chips Hold on a mo! I've just looked out I've rubbed my eyes, there is no doubt The germination's just begun I'm sorry sir, forget I rung! Impatient Allotmenteer

Calling all knitters

Keep those knitting needles clicking for the Big Knit!

The Big Knit campaign continues through 2019 and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to keep knitting or join in for the first time! Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15th year, the campaign needs to recruit more knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target by July 2019. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area. “The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.” Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created nationally, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island. For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit https://www.ageuk.org. uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/the-big-knit/. Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres. This year’s hat knitting patterns are available to download - to find out more visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/bigknit or pop into any of our addresses to request a leaflet

What's on at Ratby Parish Church in May Church Lane, Ratby, LE6 0JF

Hello everyone, I hope that you all managed to make the most of the bank holidays and to be fair the not to bad weather. Lots of things have been happening at the Sports Club this last month with the end of the football season for our teams and the beginning of the cricket season. As I reported in the last edition the Panthers under 15s have won their league and the Panthers under 11s and under 12s are still in cup competitions yet to be resolved so I hope to bring you some good news in the next edition. The cricket season is only a few weeks old but already the 1st team are off to a flyer, 3 games and 3 wins so lets hope this continues, the 2nd team have had 2 games with a win and a defeat so all told a good start for the lads. If on a Saturday afternoon you fancy sitting out in the sunshine enjoying a nice cool drink watching a bit of cricket on the village green there is no better place than at the Sports Club come down and show your support, there will be a game every Saturday weather permitting for the foreseeable so nip down and show your support. The launch of the Ratby Sports Bar has gone so much better than expected and the feedback we have received has been fantastic, the new range of drinks are going down well with Moretti, Amstel, Strongbow dark fruits, John Smiths and a wider choice of Gins being really popular. If you haven’t been down yet for a nose or to try our new range of drinks then do so and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. We have now got new opening times for the summer months and please remember we are available for parties, seminars or clubs we have FREE WIFI, FREE PLAY Pool Table, FREE PLAY Football Table, Darts and when the weather is suitable the Bouncy Castle will be out for your children’s entertainment. We are always looking for sponsorship and we are currently trying to raise money to replace what everyone must agree our very unsightly windows and bars, ultimately our aim would be to have a patio door out on to the patio area which would be a real feature especially in the summer. Thank you to those that continue to support the club and try and get this sleeping giant back on it’s feet, it is hard work but like one of the leading supermarkets constantly remind us...every little helps! Remember Use it don’t lose it!

Regards, Garry
