NEWS FROM RATBY PARISH COUNCIL RATBY ALLOTMENT SITES - After the cessation of Ratby Allotments Association, both sites are now being managed by the Parish Council. The Council was extremely disappointed at the state of the sites which were overgrown and apparently used as a dumping ground for household rubbish etc. The state of both sites has involved the Council in spending a considerable amount of money in clearing all the household rubbish, carpets etc., which had been left on the sites. Some of the areas on the sites have been impossible to fork over as layer upon layer of carpet is present on some of the plots and it has been necessary to excavate this with a digger. It is hoped that the existing and new tenants will be able to enjoy a much more pleasant area in which to undertake their pastime/hobbies.
RATBY COMMUNITY ORCHARD GROUP - The Orchard Group celebrated its 20th Anniversary with its Annual Apple Day on Sunday 30th September 2018. The Parish Council wishes to congratulate the group on its success and acknowledges the hard work that has gone on in maintaining the Orchard to such a high standard. FERNDALE PARK – CCTV - CCTV is now in operation at Ferndale Park.
Permanent notices are already affixed to the camera posts but further permanent notices will be erected as soon as they are available. After investing in this equipment the Council hopes vandalism etc., will stop and allow residents to enjoy what is a valuable asset to the village.
ACCESS TO COUNCIL OWNED PROPERTY - Recently, damage has occurred to the Sputnik roundabout in the Ferndale Park and also to a tree, which was destroyed due to private contractors gaining access to the site in order to carry out hedge trimming. The Council wish to make it clear that should residents need to access its property, prior consent should be sought in order to avoid damage being caused. ALGAE ON POND IN TOTEM POLE FIELD, TAVERNER DRIVE - There appears to be algae on the pond in the Totem Pole Field. Notices have been placed warning dog owners not to allow their animals to drink the water. This algae is probably due to the hot summer we have had and Council understands that the same problem is in other areas. The brook at the Burroughs has been tested and the results have proved that there is no contamination present. LFE Film Evenings LFE Film Evenings will be showing on Thursday 1 November “Darkest Hour” During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. As the seemingly unstoppable Nazi forces advance, and with the Allied army cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. While manoeuvring his political rivals, he must confront the ultimate choice: negotiate with Hitler and save the British people at a terrible cost or rally the nation and fight on against incredible odds.
Apply now for 2019 secondary school places
LEICESTERSHIRE parents and carers with children due to start at secondary school next year are being encouraged to apply for places at their preferred schools before October 31. They will also find an interactive ‘Your Guide to education’ online to help focus their search and shortlist up to three preferred schools. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Last year 96% of Leicestershire parents submitted their application online and we encourage people to use this approach.
Cast: Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Samuel West, David Schofield, Lily James Running time: 2 hours. Venue: the Parish Hall, Kings Drive, LFE, LE3 3JE.
“We also want to remind parents to maximise their opportunities by applying for three schools, including their catchment school. There is no automatic entry for any school, so it is very important for applications to be submitted before the closing date.”
On arrival complimentary hot drink and biscuits are provided. As we have no licence, please feel free to bring your own drinks. You also get a free raffle ticket for a double ticket prize to be used for a future showing. Doors open at 7.00pm; showing starts at 7.30pm. Cost: £5.
Open evenings held at schools, for parents and carers to view facilities and speak to the teachers, can be useful in helping determine which school is best for their child.
Schools should be contacted directly, from the start of term and before the closing date, to find out more. Parents unable to apply online may download a form from the website (www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ education-and-children/schools-collegesandacademies/school-admissions), fill it in and post it by the closing date. Alternatively they may call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 and request a form to be sent out.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com
Community Speed Enforcement Average Speed Camera’s Bradgate Hill, Groby Residents should be aware that the average speed camera’s situated on the A50 between Lena Drive and Field Head locally known as Bradgate Hill are now active and monitor drivers in both directions. Drivers should be aware those travelling above the 40mph are risking a speeding fine please take care.
School Keep Clear – Camera Car I wanted to take this opportunity to advise residents of the trial to combat the problems of inconsiderate parking on School Keep Clear Zig-Zag markings. We have set aside one-off funding of up to £500,000, to address concerns that parents, residents and teachers have about parking outside schools. We work closely with schools and colleges to improve issues around on-street parking as well as pedestrian and pupil safety and we invited schools to register their interest in the scheme. The work to make the zig-zag zones enforceable involves ensuring traffic regulation orders are in place by upgrading mandatory signs and lines so the zones are enforceable. A total of 32 schools that already have the necessary mandatory markings are taking part in the trial. Another 27 schools who have reported issues with parking also registered an interest, but are not yet eligible to begin the trial as further work is needed at these locations. I have asked Groby Community College and Brookvale High School to take part in these trials due to the serious inconsiderate parking on Ratby Road by parents and people dropping and collecting pupils from the school. I am pleased to say they have now requested to join the scheme. I am pleased to say Ratby Primary school had already signed up to this scheme. Using automatic number plate recognition technology, a camera car is being used by officers to monitor compliance and issue fines where necessary. The remaining schools across the county will be invited again to be considered for inclusion later this year.
Gritting In Summer and Storm Clean Up The County Council’s gritters have spread around 150 tonnes of granite to protect roads across Leicestershire which were melting during the heat wave.
8
Since the beginning of July, the highways team have dusted more than 25 locations across the county. It is the first time for a number of years the highway teams have had to carry out dusting using modified gritters. However, the impact of the joint hottest summer on record has caused longer term damage to our roads here in Leicestershire and throughout the country. We have assessed the level of damage and the treatments needed. We are also working with other highway authorities to make the case for additional central government funding, as was forthcoming after the last winter for potholes. However, recognising the need to address the most urgent repairs we are looking at bringing forward the 2019/20 allocation of £2.2million (the remainder of the £5million allocated in the MTFS) and look at the possibility of a growth bid to replace the £2.2million in 2019/20. The weather continues to bring challenges with well over a hundred trees blocking roads and paths across the whole county in the last week. Our gangs have worked day and night clearing the debris and I would like to thank them for their dedication to keeping our roads safe.
Fostering and Adoption I would like to congratulate and thank the Council’s Fostering and Adoption Service for their outstanding work over the last year. There are increasing numbers of children who are having to come into care and in order to ensure that as many of them as possible can be are placed within families the service has significantly increased its targets for recruiting foster carers and adopters. It is well on track to achieve these and since April 2018 it has recruited 16 foster carers more than in the whole of last year with a further 34 families going through the assessment process. There has also been a major increase in adoption recruitment and so far this year 13 families have been approved with a further 55 families being assessed. This is a particularly significant achievement at a time when others are finding it increasing difficult to recruit families and is testament to the hard work of our staff .The fact that families can see the extremely attractive offer and support that the Council will be providing has even seen some transferring from other agencies. By increasing these very important services we will be able to keep many more children inside the County and within families where they will receive top quality care and support and have the best chance of achieving their full potential. Fraudsters are sending out fake TV Licence
refund emails that lead to convincing looking websites in a bid to steal victim bank account details. There have been over 100 reports about these scam emails in the past few days that appear to have been constantly evolving. They claim that TV Licencing have been trying to get hold of recipients regarding an overpayment refund or that due to invalid account details a credit was not possible. The refund links lead to cloned TV Licencing websites that are designed to harvest bank account and credit card details. TV Licensing’s tips for spotting a scam email • Check the email contains your name – TV licensing will always include your name in any emails they send you. • Check the email subject line - anything along the lines of "Action required", "Security Alert", "System Upgrade", "There is a secure message waiting for you", and so on, should be treated as suspect. • Check the email address - does the email address look like one that TV Licensing use? For example donotreply@tvlicensing.co.uk. Look closely as often the address may be similar. • Check for a change in style - often the scammers will take the real emails and amend them. Look out for changes in the wording used, especially if it seems too casual or familiar. • Check for spelling and grammar - are there any spelling mistakes, missing full stops or other grammatical errors? • Check the links go to the TV Licensing website - hover over the links in the email to see their destination and check the web address carefully. If you are not sure, go directly to the TV Licensing website. • Never provide details by email - TV licensing will never ask you to reply to an email and provide bank details or personal information. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use our online fraud reporting tool.
The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) have warned that fraudsters are advertising fake vehicle leasing deals on social media. Fraudsters are paying for social media advertising on channels that include Instagram, and are posing as BVRLA members to lure in customers with enticing headlines,
t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk
targeting those with poor credit ratings. The BVRLA is telling people to think twice before responding to any adverts that promote vehicle leasing deals that require ‘No credit checks’, promote ‘No deposit’ and ask people to ‘Direct Message’ via text to get the deal. BVRLA Chief Executive, Gerry Keaney said: “These criminals are purposely targeting the vulnerable, scamming money from people who can least afford to lose it. It’s deplorable. Their adverts can appear very convincing with some even posing as BVRLA members and citing membership numbers of legitimate members. “We want to get the message out there that all legitimate leasing brokers adhere to Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules and will carry out credit and affordability checks. Those who don’t, will not be legitimate traders and could be out to scam you.” Customers who want to check whether a leasing broker is a genuine are advised to contact BVRLA’s Adam Holt on adam@bvrla.co.uk. Every Report Matters – if you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Ratby Library with Crow Pie Cafe Volunteers Yes, still talking about volunteers. Well, they are the essential element in the running of Community Librarys wherever they are and ours in Ratby is no exception, thanks a lot everybody! Of course managing the books service to customers and running the café are the main tasks, but there are other projects that require some specialised help. These are the erection of a prefabricated shed in the back garden and the removal of the staff toilet to make a food store. These two are very much linked in that a lot of things are currently stored in the toilet and will need somewhere to go when the work takes place. Give Ken a ring for a chat on 07720542295
Quiz Twenty Two people enjoyed the monthly Quiz on 14th September. The Misfits were the winners with 32.5 points. As always Stephen Roache included local knowledge, with cries of ‘Oh! Of course’, when the answers were read out. The next quiz will be on 19h October starting at 7.30pm and the entry fee is £2.00. There is no alcohol licence but you may like to bring your own drinks. It s very pleasing that the numbers attending are still above 20.

PLEASE NOTE: our next meeting will be on Tuesday November 20th 2018. “Making the Connections”, an overview of the Park and recent investigations into its history. Speaker from the Bradgate Park Trust. 2nd half, a short film of a visit to the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium in 2017. Speakers Beth and Roger Barrett - who attended the Service. Kirby Muxloe Community Centre/ Village Hall Before WWII, Kirby Muxloe had relied on a small number of venues for all its social activities. The premisies, such as St Bartholomew’s Church Hall, the Free Church Hall, a room above the Cop-op (on Castle road) and a room above the bar at the Royal Oak Public house were very often in use. Dances were held there, plays were performed, dinners attended, rates paid, the list goes on. By the end of WWII, the Free Chuch Hall was no longer available as the church had been razed to the ground in the bombing of 1940. As men returned from the war and others, who were no longer carrying out their wartime duties at home, had more free time, the need for a large public hall became more pressing.
building work. A loan of £1,700 was offered, which was to be repaid by the proceeds of fundraising events to be held in subsequent years. A group of local master builders, including Fred Clarke, Armson and Hollis and the Newman’s offered their services free of charge and agreed to supervise the construction of the centre. So, in 1947, a parcel of land was purchased, mainly by public conscription, and the building was given the go ahead. The five local master builders agreed to act as leaders, overseeing a large group of voluntary workers, most of whom had no building experience at all, but were willing to help wherever they were required. Men and women worked alongside each other, digging the footings and doing what ever was needed. People just turned up, spade in hand, ready to do anything and everything! One lady who remembered digging the footings with her husband, spoke of the friendship that grew between the volunteers, she also remarked that they all had great fun working together. The master builders each took one evening a week supervising the work all year round. Many local tradesmen gave their services for free. There were so many willing people. Much of the the decorating and outside paintwork was taken over by the ladies of the village. Many people worked in the evenings, throughout the winter, using floodlights to enable them to carry on. The hall had central heating, a very new and unusual feature at that time, and the floor was made of sycamore blocks. They built a stage, dressing rooms, cloakrooms a kitchen and a small gallery. Other rooms
were to be added at a later date. In all, it is said that at least 4,000 man hours of labour were given by the volunteers. The Community Centre was opened at 2:30pm on Saturday 1st October 1949 by Lt. Col. Sir Robert Martin, C.M.G., D.L. Colonel Martin was Chairman of Leicestershire County Council at the time. There was a short address by the Chairman of the Committee Mr George V. Briggs, preceeding the opening. Afterwards, there followed a fancy dress parade, a gala, sports, competitions, side shows, pony rides, teas and ices. To complete the celebrations, a dance was held in the Centre from 7:30pm to 11:30pm. An event for all members of the family. Over the next few years many fund raising activities were held and over £1000 was raised. The final contribution to the fund was given by the staging of the Pageant of Kirby Muxloe on June 17th until 20th 1953. This was a fantastic undertaking, put on by the community, in order to raise funds for the final part of the loan. Over eighty adults and thirty children took part. A souvenir programme, telling the story of the Pageant will be on display at the History Group Exhibition on 17th November 2018, 11am-4pm. The exhibition wil be held in the Community Centre (often called the Village Hall). Some information in this article was taken from ‘a Roof over Their Heads’ produced by St Bartholomew’s Church in 1992.
In 1947, less than two years after the end of WWII, a committee was set up by Mrs Kendal and Mrs Cameron of Kirby Fields, their remit was to raise money towards building a Community Centre for the village. Eric Mileham, who served on the village Parish Council for forty-one years, was also involved in the organisation. Each and every road in the village had a representative, who collected 1p from each household every Friday night! Almost all of the village took part. Firstly, Donald Cameron and Mrs Webb approached the National Council of Social Services in order to gain a loan for the

Ratby Primary School News.... Welcome to all of our new Foundation Stage children
Year 3 – Exploring Circuits
Fifty-one children have started school this year in the Rainbow and Sunshine Classes and we are absolutely delighted that they have all settled in so happily! Our Topic this half term is ‘If you go down to the woods today….’ ….. and there have been a few surprises! Most of our learning so far has been through the traditional story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We had to find clues to the story on the playground and we have retold the story with puppets and role play, identifying the main events and talking about the characters. We have done lots of bear counting and problem solving, using different sizes of bears. We followed a recipe to make our own porridge which most of us thought was delicious, but one child commented that “the porridge wasn’t yummy at all!” Over the next few weeks we will be continuing with this theme by going on a Bear Hunt.
Five alive tuck shop
Year 6, set up and successfully ran a terrific tuck shop!
On Wednesdays, fruit and healthy snacks were made available in the front playground for KS2 to buy, all at a reasonable price. As we returned to school in September, the new Year 5 were eager to continue this amazing enterprise. A business plan was discussed and the offer of '£1 a week till Christmas' was made the Mercury to Year 6 classes, to allow 5 to continue to run this popular enterprise. The offer was accepted and last week saw the first tuck shop of the year. Snacks flew off the stall! Year 5 will continue to sell snacks on a Wednesday and Friday (stock and weather permitting) Fresh fruit and raisins are 10p each and other snack bars are 30p each.
This term, Year 6 have been learning about the circulatory system and how the heart works. Towards the beginning of the term, we looked at real lambs’ hearts and saw all of the different parts. Not long after looking at the lamb hearts, we used a real stethoscope to listen to our hearts. Then we made our own stethoscopes using a tube and a funnel. We found out how exercise affects our heart by running around the playground for 3 minutes and comparing our heart rates before and after exercise. In art, we created abstract paintings about the heart and also designed our own shape poems. We are also reading a book called Pig Heart Boy, which is about a boy who needs a heart transplant. We wonder how it will end!
Year 4 -A Harvest Prayer
Year 1 and Year 2- Big Red Combine Harvester
Year 5 - Four Rows of Peas Poem
Year 3- Harvest Moon poem
Year 6 - Harvest Harmony Poem
On Thursday 27th September, Ratby Primary School celebrated their Harvest Service at St. Philip and St. James Church, Ratby. The service was led by Mrs Jones and Reverend Bampton. All pupils took part in a variety of songs and poems as follows: EYFS – On the farmers Apple Tree
Mercury 5 are looking forward to another positive year, selling snacks and developing the stall. Thanks to everyone for supporting us.
Harvest Festival
The whole school joined together to sing their hearts out for three songs: Harvest Hymn, Harvest Samba and Cauliflowers Fluffy. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and lots of food items were donated to various local charities. Lots of lovely comments were made about pupil behaviour, the enthusiasm with which the pupils performed with and the high standard of singing. We also raised £81 towards the schools chosen charity Oxfam unwrapped.

The children have really enjoyed playing in the woodland have role play area, and session with Mrs Payne. also had great fun engaging in their first Forest School The children have all shown a tremendous interest having a lot of fun together!
Year 3 have been enjoying exploring electrical circuits this term! We predicted and tested a variety of different circuits. Another exciting activity was the creation of pictures that lit up or included motorised moving elements. Finally, we investigated the role of conductors within a circuit and talked about which materials allowed electricity to flow through them. The children really liked testing their predictions out using the materials!

Woodlands Farm Application - This application seeks the approval to turn this site adjacent to Ratby into a glamping site that involves the removal of 63% of the trees on site which is part of the National Forest and a 100,000 tonnes of top soil being delivered along Desford tubes straight with 45 to 50 lorry loads a day using a traffic light system to gain access up a narrow single lane access. County highways are at present not objecting to this proposal which could go on for at least 10 months. As this is a major application, it will go to Planning Ctte but the impact will be so severe, we have no choice but to object to protect local residents as footpaths R43 and R49 run along side this site. Bosworth Battlefield - Recently, the Planning Ctte at HBBC voted to permit an application to allow MIRA to build a test track on part of the Bosworth Battlefield for driverless cars. we both had numerous emails, locally, nationally and internationally objecting to the this stating that MIRA already has a testing track and this meant the loss forever of part of a heritage site. We both do not sit on Planning but wish to state that we would never have voted for this.
Remembrance Parade - This November marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war and Ratby will be doing it's best to honour the fallen not just in this war but all. Ozzy unfortunately, cannot attend as he is County Council Chairman and must be elsewhere, but Chris will lead the parade as Parade Marshall. Please remember that the parade will be at the War Memorial at 11.45. We have the honour of having the Archdeacon of Loughborough presiding over the service and also a DL will be attending. Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hi All I hope I find you all well, we have had a couple of quiet weeks at the club and was really disappointed with the last turnout for Base Oddysey Reggae, Disco and Soul night, we try to put things on for people to go out locally and be entertained and we never charge you for the entertainment, I do appreciate however that the show was at the end of the month and maybe some of you hadn't been paid, even so the turnout was very disapointing but fear not we still have some upcoming events for you...

All these evenings are Free Entry and EVERYONE is welcome, you do not need to be a member to come to the club. On the sporting front the cricket season has now come to an end and unfortunantly I have to report the 1st team lost their fight to stay in the division and got relegated despite a last fluresh at the final run in. (Pardon the pun). Thd second team ended up mid table and im sure will look to improve next season, well done to all that took part and a very well done to all the guys who have made our junior section go from strength to strength. On the football side of things the Ratby Panthers on all levels have had a great start, the Sunday senior team continue to show fine form and im delighted to announce that the Panthers under 12s are top of their respective league.

Renata performed for us last November at the inauguration of our new piano at Markfield Methodist Church. The recital was an evening few of us will forget. Renata was a student of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and thrilled the full house with her programme of Chopin and Liszt, producing a spontaneous standing ovation at the end. Quite simply, Renata was breath-taking, with a staggering technique and depth of musical maturity. Added to that was her lovely, gentle manner. We are extremely excited to be welcoming her back! ď ˆď€Żď€ąď€§ď€Šď€Źď€°ď ‰ď€Ąď Šď€şď €ď€Ąď ‹ď€˛ď …ď€Ťď€Šď€Śď Œď€şď€ťď€°ď€Ąď Šď ?ď Žď€Łď€Ąď ?ď€ď€Šď€Ąď ?ď€ąď€Žď …ď€Źď€Ľď€ąď€Źď€Ąď€˛ď€°ď ‘ď€Ąď ƒď€Žď€Śď€Źď€Ľď€Şď€Ąď€Žď …ď€Ąď€Žď€˛ď€Śď€Ą ď€˘ď€Šď€žď€°ď€Żď€Źď€Šď€Ąď€Žď€Śď€Ąď€ąď€Ľď€Şď€Şď€Ąď€ˇď€Ľď€Şď€ąď€Žď€Şď€¤ď€Ąď€Žď …ď€Ąď €ď€şď ?ď ’ď €ď€Ąď€żď “ď€żď ‚ď “ď€żď€Ąď€´ď€Ąď €ď ‚ď ď€şď€żď€Ąď€şď “ď€żď ’ď€ťď€şď€Ą

INSPIRE THEATRE SCHOOL Service of Loving Remembrance
INSPIRE THEATRE SCHOOL has recently opened in the local village of Newbold Verdon after relocating from London and are very much looking for new students as passionate about the performing arts as they are. Their passion and expertise is in drama, musical theatre and they offer specialist training in these disciplines to 5-18 year olds. Their classes are small, supportive and friendly and create a safe environment to encourage children and young adults to gain confidence and learn performance techniques. Whether through song or script, solo or group work we offer all children a platform to be themselves and the freedom to be anyone they choose to be! The Principal and owner Helen Sheppard-Bools ALCM, BA Hons (Drama & Music) has taught extensively for many schools and specialist performing arts companies including Stagecoach and Theatretrain and has been a private singing teacher and drama coach for over 10 years. INSPIRE THEATRE SCHOOL itself was created in North West London back in 2013 teaching drama and musical theatre in schools and is passionate about teaching children and young adults the self-expression, creativity, confidence and respect that comes from performing and creating drama and musical theatre. They have also taken hundreds of students through LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams in musical theatre and drama with a 100% pass rate. They will be continuing to offer their students the same opportunity of gaining not only the prestige and skill that comes from passing a LAMDA exam but also the opportunity of gaining valuable UCAS points at later grades. They would love to meet any new aspiring actors or singers or anyone who needs a platform to be brave and gain confidence and offer drama classes, musical theatre classes or our song classes in age appropriate groups CLASSES ARE HELD AT ST JAMES CHURCH HALL, MAIN STREET, NEWBOLD VERDON LE9 9NL ON MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY EVENINGS You can contact Helen on 07763 410896 or via email at: inspiretheatreschool@gmail.com

Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local heart charity On Sunday 4 November, local heart charity, *the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair. Now in its 3rd year, the event will be held at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, and will be open from 10.30-4.30pm. The JHMT Christmas Fair will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range beautiful gifts from a range of uniquely crafted items made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. Items will include jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home interiors and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards, craft gins, local fine wines and delicatessen goods all with the emphasis on quality products which are not available on the high street. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of my amazing son Joe who collapsed and died aged just 14 after a run with one of his best friends. “Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), a heart condition which causes sudden, unexpected death in young people and can often go undiagnosed. The void which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name (www.jhmt.org.uk) “By coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you can buy unique eclectic and beautiful gifts, have a piece of homemade cake with a cuppa and help to save young lives in the process. The craft fair is free to attend – although a discretionary donation on entry would be very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

HEALTHMATTERS OCTOBER BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH My student pharmacist has chosen to write about Breast Cancer. Her name is Humaira Ali and has graduated with a Masters Degree from De Montfort University. October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a month dedicated to educating individuals about breast cancer and a worldwide campaign which aims to encourage communities to fundraise for breast cancer research. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. Statistics show that 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer in their lifetime – with a diagnosis being made every 10 seconds! Contrary to popular belief, breast cancer can occur in both men and women. It is hence of paramount importance that we are all kept well-informed in regards to being able to recognise the signs and symptoms associated with the disease.
Signs and Symptoms to watch out for include: ▪ A change in size or shape of the breast
size, shape or colour of the breasts. Changes in skin texture, an inverted nipple and rash should also be noted. Step 2: Raise your arms to look for the same signs and symptoms. Step 3: While you're at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples. This could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid. It may also be blood. To look for lumps: Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Using a circular motion, cover the entire breast from top to bottom (from your collarbone to the top of the abdomen), and side to side (from your armpit to your cleavage) Step 4: Feel your breasts for lumps whilst lying down
▪ Redness or a rash on the skin on/around the nipple
Step 5: Feel your breasts for lumps while you are standing or sitting. This step is best done in the shower, as the easiest way to feel your breasts is when the skin is wet and slippery
▪ Discharge that comes from the nipple without squeezing ▪ A swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone ▪ A lump or thickening that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue ▪ A change in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling (like orange skin) ▪ The nipple becoming inverted or pointed in a different direction ▪ Constant pain in the breast or armpit Statistics show that patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the early stages have a higher chance of survival compared to those diagnosed in the advanced stages. Self examination increases the chances of an early diagnosis. It is advised that we should check our breasts for signs and symptoms of breast cancer once a month.
How do we self-examine? Step 1: Look at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your hands on your hips. You should look out for any change in
The more you examine your breasts, the easier it will become to notice any changes. It is advisable to carry out a self-examination on the first day of every month, so that it is easy to remember. It is important to bear in mind that menstruation causes the breasts to become swollen and tender. Therefore, you should examine yourself several days after your period ends. If you notice any signs or symptoms, please make an appointment with your GP surgery as soon as possible. If you would like any more information on anything mentioned above, please pop in to the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe or call us on 0116 2387353. Thank You
