Escape! Leicester in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity The Fire Fighters Charity is holding an Escape Room tournament at Escape Leicester on Saturday, 2 November 2019 from 8am throughout the day. This event will raise funds to support the Fire & Rescue community and their dependants with mental, physical and social wellbeing. “Fire Service personnel and their families are always there to look after us and fundraising for their Charity is just one of the ways we can give something back” says Events Fundraiser Laura Challis. “We’ve decided to hold an Escape room event to raise funds, as escape is something that we all need to help forget about the issues and pressures we all experience on our journey through everyday life.” It costs just £12.50 per person to take part which is half the usual price! This price includes entry in to the tournament where there are trophies to be won for those teams beating all the others to escape the room the fastest. “This is a great opportunity for anyone to come down and enjoy a few hours of entertainment in aid of the extremely worthwhile cause, The Fire Fighters Charity.” says Service Co-Ordinator, Station Manager Karl Anderson. “Many Leicestershire Firefighters, colleagues and their families have been supported by all the Services the charity has to offer, and this is an ideal and fun way to generate the much-needed funds to allow this service to continue.” There will be drinks and snacks available to purchase and also the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win some wonderful prizes raising further funds for The Fire Fighters Charity. To book your places visit: https://www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/events-categories/escape-leicester If you have any questions about the event, don’t hesitate to contact Laura Challis at lchallis@firefighterscharity.org.uk or on 07798 725560.

Popular money course to run again
There should be a will, and there is a way!
Popular money course to run again as people say they need tactics to cope with the age of austerity.
For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will.
Tuesdays: October 22 & 29 and November 5 2019 at 7.30pm
To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated gift in their will to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times. The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/will-writing/
As part of our local Churches Together group Kirby Muxloe Free Church has partnered with Christians Against Poverty to offer CAP Money courses in our community. The service is completely free. The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. It is a simple, yet highly effective money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that really works. This course will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can save, budget, spend, give and avoid money problems. Enjoy a welcome in the Living Room at Kirby Muxloe Free Church where there is free off-road parking at the rear of the church building. Each course has three sessions of about 2 hours including a refreshment break. The format is informal with short video clips, discussion, money saving tips and some practical problem solving. By attending this course you will be provided with online tool to use during and after the course as well as course material to refer to, to use and to take away. To find out more you can visit www.capmoney. org.uk where all the available cap money UK courses can be found, and you can book directly online to the course of your choice or you can also request an online booking link from kirbycapmoney@gmail.com for your local course while places are available or call the church office on 0116 239 3173 for more information.
Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Anthony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately, 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.” “Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”

Kirby Muxloe WI After a lovely summer break Kirby Muxloe WI started their Autumn programme with guest speaker Paul Taberner ex policeman ,talking about his time as a CSI Investigator for the West Midlands Police Force.
Per forming i Music Fro r m Films And Musicals
Paul came along and told us the reality of Crime Scenes Investigations, which as it turned out was a lot different from that depicted in television dramas! Paul worked for the Warwickshire police but his work took him to other neighbouring counties. He told us that everyone suffers from “Confirmation Bias and that during training that had to be eliminated to enable officers to investigate criminal scenes in an unbiased way.

Paul explained how everything would be photographed and videoed then put into a computer system called “HOLMESâ€? and who's backup computer was called “Watsonâ€? ,someone certainly had a sense of humour. He went on to dispel many myths surrounding TV CSI programmes such as the huge whiteboards you see displaying evidence photographs etc. none of which are used in real life. He told us interesting stories of clever criminals, like the one who pulled off a valuable jewellery heist, and amusing ones of the less clever budding criminal who threw away ÂŁ2 coins because he thought they were “foreign moneyâ€? and the miniscule evidence that gives them away. It was interesting to learn that the British Forensic Research and Development organisation in Warwickshire helped in the identification of some 30 victims of the Twins Towers atrocity..

Paul told us how he liaised with TV and Film Producers about the procedures to follow but also stated that it is after all TV/Film and it has to be watchable and interesting for the viewer. Unfortunately its not always like that in real life and for the most part it is time consuming and laborious but could be interesting work. Kirby Muxloe WI has a full programme of events coming up; We will be holding a Autumn Fair in October with many stalls selling various gifts and produce. You would be very welcome to come along as a guest to see what we are about.
Robins & Rainbows Fundraising Curry Night. A huge Thank you to everyone who attended the Curry Night on 27th August at Harrison Spice, in memory of Kim Pye. Desford Road or Lane / Back Lane In the thirteenth century, Desford Road was known as Coalpit Lane or Coalpit Way. At that time, the road was no more than a track, which stretched from New Bridge (the small bridge on Desford Road, before the right turn off towards Ratby) to Kirby Muxloe. The track was used by packhorses transporting coal from Swannington to the village. Desford Road, or more generally known as Desford Lane, or indeed, Back Lane, was sparsely occupied until after 1903. By looking at the 1903 Parish map, it is clear that the only houses on the road at that time were “The Chestnuts”, built between 1888 and 1903, which was on the corner of Ratby Lane and Desford Road; six terraced villas, built around 1900, Forest Lodge boarding house, Woodlands Cottage, which borders on Woodlands Lane and Desford Road, and the white cottage which stands on the corner of Fox Lane and Desford Road. However, by 1911, there had been an influx of building and Desford Road was home to no fewer than nineteen families. In 1901, The Chestnuts was home to the retired school headmaster, William Mitchell. It later became a boarding house, run by Mrs Mitchell, who, by this time, was a widow. In the following years, it became a private house, and at some point, part of the adjoining land was sold off for new development. The six terraced villas, whose names in pairs were “Bradgate View”, “Charnwood Villas” and “Forest View”, were built around 1900. Forest
Lodge is first mentioned in the census in 1891. It appears that the central part of the property, which was said to be “gaunt and bare” in appearance, was known as the Red Barn, and was the only building on the site at that time. In 1879, it was used by the nonconformist church for around twenty months, until their own purpose-built church, the Zion Chapel, was erected on Main Street. The rent was five shillings per week. In 1883, the Red Barn was purchased by Miss Elizabeth Sharpe, who soon set about extending the property by building a wing on each side. By 1891, Forest Lodge was an established boarding house with four boarders. As the years went by, the number of boarders grew, and by 1911, there were nine people boarding at the establishment. In 1932, the property was referred to as a “Private Hotel” and by 1936, as the “Forest Lodge Hotel”. In the 1950’s, there was a very beautiful, large walnut tree in the garden which was later felled, to make room for a swimming pool. In around 1960, the Forest Lodge owners purchased number 18, the bungalow next to the hotel. The bungalow had been owned by William Clarke and this was added to the existing building in order to enlarge the premises. At the height of its success, the hotel was a popular venue for tea dances and wedding receptions. Sadly, the building was demolished some years ago to make way for “Howard’s Court”, a housing development.
by the older residents, who remember the threshing machine in the 1930’s and ‘40’s.
By 1911, we find Frederick James Bowley living at Rose Cottage, 20, Desford Lane. According to the 1911 census, Mr Bowley was a “steam threshing machine proprietor”. He is well remembered in the village, especially
Desford Road has many interesting aspects and to give it the attention that it deserves, this article will continue next month. So, look out for the history of the cemetery, allotments and farms, and more stories from “Old Kirby”.
Children frequently ran from Desford Road, around the corner to Main Street, to watch the threshing machine turning into Wathes’ farm. Although we might think that the most interesting thing about a steam threshing machine was the steam belching out of the funnel, we are told it was the “rumble” of the roller travelling along the road which greatly interested the children. In later years the business was taken over by Jack Randall. Further along the road we find Woodlands Cottage, which is included in the early census returns. It appears to have very old origins, as the construction is of mixed brick and stone. The white cottage at the corner of Fox Lane and Desford Road was originally three cottages and built around 1870. Many years ago, the cottages were combined to make a larger property. The building has been subject to a sympathetic restoration by the present owners. It has been said that there was a windmill situated near to the white cottage, but as yet no trace has been found. The present owners have excavated much of the surrounding garden and nothing of note has been discovered.

Would you like to TRACE YOUR FAMILY TREE? HELP FOR BEGINNERS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN RATBY LIBRARY* Recent visitors to Ratby Library may have seen that help is being offered to those who want to begin tracing their Family Tree. Although this is new to the Library it has already been successful and received feedback such as: ‘Thanks a million for all the work you put in on my family. I’m really chuffed.’ ‘To have such an informal ‘lesson’ gave me a real start on my journey.’ ‘This latest information is mind blowing, so much information, so much to take in.’ ‘Now he has been brought to life as a real person and of great interest.’ If you are interested in having some informal one-to-one help please email only4genealogy@gmail.com for more details. You never know what you might find! It is planned to have a monthly meeting to allow beginners to discuss the problems they have encountered, possible solutions, and of course useful tips they have learned. This will be announced as soon as the details have been finalised. You can use Ancestry, Find My Past, and much more, free in Ratby Library, and no doubt in many more, if not all, local libraries. Family History is not just about names, dates and places. A little effort can show the conditions that they lived in, their achievements and sometimes their failures. You may well find interesting occupations, military records, newspaper reports, court records and much more for your ancestors; not just the ones you expected to find, but more interestingly, the ones you did not! You may wish to investigate stories and rumours passed down through the generations which may well have been distorted. The truth could be there waiting to be discovered. One session resulted in finding a photo of a direct ancestor born in 1879 that they did not have before. Another revealed 15 years service in the Navy starting in the Victorian period, with much detail including every ship he served on and when. *Please note: This is offered to help to keep the library financially viable as it becomes self funding. A discretionary donation to the Ratby Library and Community Group, with a suggested minimum of £5, is requested. The help is via an experienced researcher whose time is given free.

Hi James here with a final update on my Jamboree experience. Since my last note I completed my fundraising and attended the 24th World Scout Jamboree held in West Virginia, USA.
Exploring New York
I started my Jamboree experience on Saturday 20th July, with 39 other scouts from Leicestershire. In total 4000 scouts from the UK flew out of Heathrow destined for New York City for the first leg of our journey. After a stopover at Hofstra University our first day was spent exploring New York, including a ride on a traditional American school bus for the journey into central Manhattan. Our troop along with the rest of the UK contingent explored the many sights and sounds of the big apple. Taking in sights such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal, Times Square, Trump Tower, the 911 memorial, and the One World Trade Center. Covering over 20km on foot in one day! We stopped over at the University of West Virginia that evening, before travelling on to the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia the following day. The Summit Bechtel Reserve and World Jamboree was created to allow scouts from all over the globe to share adventures, cultures and friendships with one another. On a rainy Monday we set up camp, along with scouts from 200 other countries. I was based in Alpha camp, one of five basecamps. Bear Grylls, as Chief Scout hosted the official opening of the 24th World Scout Jamboree. Together with 45,000 other scouts we celebrated the coming together of various nations, in peace and harmony. This was the largest ever since it began in 1920 where just 8000 scouts attended. We were treated to a

exploring Washington DC. Taking in many sights such as the White House and other historic monuments in the Capital. We also attended the Baltimore Orioles baseball game. It was quite an experience with 4000 UK scouts in attendance, cheering on the Orioles to victory. We then had a long bus ride up to Quebec to spend a few days camping in Canada. We visited Montreal, spent time with the Canadian scouts experiencing their country and making new friends.
Unit 3 “The Attenbears” – On camp at Summit Bechtel Reserve
During the next 10 days I was able to experience many activities on the reserve, including a hike up Mount Jack, white water river rafting, scuba diving and zip lining. A particular highlight was the Cultural Day where scouts from around the world shared their experiences and food. I was able to spend time exploring cultural differences and making new friends. On several nights I had the opportunity to dine and sample food from other nations spending time with scouts from the USA, Taiwan and the Lebanon. It was fantastic to try new food from their countries and make new friends. Some of my fundraising money allowed scouts from poorer countries to also share in this fantastic experience. After 12 days of camping and activities it was sadly time for the closing ceremony, bringing the 45,000 scouts back together for the last time to celebrate everything they had shared and experienced at the Jamboree. Post camp the UK contingency continued their adventures travelling by bus to the University of Maryland to spend a day
Summit Bechtel Reserve
This was truly a life changing experience that I will never forget. There are so many Jamboree adventures and memories to cherish which I will be recalling for many years to come. Most importantly I just wanted to thank everyone that made this experience possible for me. Special thanks to the leaders from Leicestershire Unit 3 who looked after us so well. The local businesses of Kirby Muxloe who have supported my fundraising efforts (One Stop, Post Office, Castle and Royal Oak Pubs) and for Your Local for sharing information about my quest to attend the Jamboree. Finally to everyone in Kirby Muxloe village who have supported me to have such a fantastic scouting experience.
Thanks to all - James

Summertime Blues So on the 25th July We got our wish, we reached a high With record heat, like Spain or France You’d think we’d cheer and do a dance But true to form the record shows The usual problems all arose The roads, the rails all showed their flaws The planes were grounded too of course The country ground down to a halt Of course no one was found at fault No bureaucrat was held to blame No ministers excuses came Instead we took our stock position (It’s something of a Brit tradition) Of moaning ‘bout the burning sun Complaining ‘something should be done!’ It must cool down! We all agree The ground is parched, and so are we When will we ever get respite Can’t stand another humid night Then by some miracle (unforeseen) The fields and lawns return to green The clouds appear, the thunder crashes Torrential rain and lightning flashes What a relief, the heat’s dispelled Hold on, what’s that I just heard yelled What? Now too cold and too darned wet? Not moaning still? Who would have bet? Kirby lad
Bradgate Park calendar launch A 2020 calendar celebrating Bradgate Park has been officially launched by Bradgate Rotary. The event took place at the Stamford Arms in Groby. Those attending the event included outgoing Bradgate Park Director, Peter Tyldesley; sponsors of the calendar; members of Bradgate Rotary; and members of Leicester Forest Photographic Society, who took the photographs for the calendar. This is the fourth year that Bradgate Rotary has produced a calendar for the Park, sales of which raise vital funds for Bradgate Park Trust. The calendar depicts scenes from the Park landscapes, events, wildlife and flora - through the different seasons. The calendar is available to purchase from Bradgate Park for ÂŁ5. A Bradgate Rotary spokesperson said: “We’d like to give a special thanks to members of Leicester Photographic Society who took such great photographs, and to Groby Allotment Society, who supplied recipes inspired by locally-grown produce which are included in the calendar.â€?
In Praise of Grandparents! SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER is ‘Grandparents Day’. Grandparents in the UK number about 17 million, or more than one in four of the adult population. Grandparents average out at 68 years of age, have four grandchildren who live 10 miles away, and who spend five hours per visit. Grandparents have multiple roles as their grandchildren grow up: playmates, teachers, confidants, spiritual guides, mentors, role models and nurturers, as well as pray-ers. They also can keep children’s milestones, family history and family events alive. Grandchildren will often discuss their personal concerns with a trusted grandparent. Grandparents are also important for the UK economy! Nine million of them looked after their grandchildren in 2017. On average they did so for 8 hours a week, 96% received no payment.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com the council will bring operation of the site in-house.
Changes to Recycling and Household Waste Sites Leicestershire County Council want to hear your views on proposed changes to the opening times of recycling and household waste sites. Why change? Leicestershire County Council continues to face financial challenges. The council has increasing demand for services and a growing population – this means we are going to have to find more savings in the future, despite having made £200m worth of savings since 2010. We’re currently consulting on our future plans and priorities across the council – you can tell us your views at www.leicestershire.gov.uk /priorities. Our current budget (announced back in February) included savings of £260,000 from Recycling and Household Waste Sites (RHWS). A significant amount of this saving is intended to come from the proposals outlined in this document. We would like you to have your say on these proposals. Our proposal for recycling and household waste sites What is the current service? The county council has a statutory duty* to provide places at which persons resident in its area may deposit their household waste free of charge. We provide 14 recycling and household waste sites across the county (see map). All of these sites are operated by the council except Whetstone, which is operated by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd. This contract is due to end in September 2020 at which time
When was the last time you reviewed your pension?
In 2015 we consulted on ways to make savings at the recycling and household waste sites. Following the 2015 consultation, all the recycling and household waste sites moved to five days per week opening from April 2016 and the council introduced charges for certain types of non-household waste such as concrete, bricks, rubble, window glass, slabs and plasterboard in May 2016. The council is proposing to: Reduce the daily recycling and household waster sites (RHWS) opening hours to 9am to 5pm in the summer (April to September), whilst leaving winter hours the same. We estimate that this proposal will save the council £134,000 by the end of 2020/21. The consultation will run from 1 July to 23 September 2019. Ways to have your say: Complete the questionnaire online. https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-yoursay/current-consultations/changes-torecycling-and-household-waste-sites Request a paper copy by emailing Waste.Projects@leics.gov.uk or calling 0116 305 0001

Our bankrupt young THE NUMBER of young people who go bankrupt has soared, increasing tenfold in just three years. People from ‘Generation Z’ (aged 18 to 25) now make up one in 15 of all personal insolvencies. Back in 2016 only one in 100 insolvencies involved a young person. As one accountant explained: “In this climate of low interest rates and relatively easy access to credit, young people without financial experience may be more susceptible to the temptations of easy money.” The rise of the gig economy and zero-hours contracts have also played a big role, for without a regular income, young people find it much more difficult to budget.

Planning Application 19/00680/OUT Markfield Road Ratby.
Groby Road, car parking, new footpath links, amenity space and landscaping.
As reported in last month’s Local magazine a planning application has been submitted to build up to 175 new houses on the Springfield Riding School (Oaklands). If this planning application is successful, the impact of the construction traffic, noise/air pollution combined with the loss of habitat for wildlife will be a tremendous blight on the village. If the development is built, there will be a minimum additional 175-350 cars going through Ratby daily! Our village can barely cope as it is at busy times!
Location: Springfield Riding School, Groby Road, Ratby, Leicester, Leicestershire
Ratby has already fulfilled its quota for new housing! Have a look at the text below taken straight from the Hinckley and Bosworth Local Plan Site Allocations and Development Management Policies DPD 2006-2026: “5.21 The residual minimum housing requirement for Ratby, as of 1 September 2014 has been met and as such no sites are required to be allocated for residential development in Ratby.” At a public meeting held on Tuesday 3rd September in the Methodist church rooms. It was requested that residents write in with their objections. Residents asked if we could add the reasons for objections that were circulated last night to our article we have also added a couple more.
Submit an Objection! We need YOU to exercise your rights and contact Hinckley & Bosworth Council to professionally and politely contest this ASAP. Actions you can take: Email Sharon Wilkinson with any of your questions about the development: planning@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk Call her on 01455255695 Write and Object to Sharon Wilkinson, Planning Department, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Hinckley Hub, Rugby Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire LE10 0FR Residents have set up a Facebook page Like the Facebook Page (Save Our Village Ratby) where there will be updates and tips for providing the most effective comments to oppose this development. 20
Opener I write in connection with the above Planning Application I would like to object… I wish to object strongly to the development of these houses in this location… I strongly object to the planning application… Please use some of the following as reasons for your objection: • Planning: The planning application is in contravention with the Hinckley and Bosworth Local Plan Site Allocations and Development Management Policies DPD 2006-2026, which states clearly in section 5.21: “The residual minimum housing requirement for Ratby, as of 1 September 2014 has been met and as such no sites are required to be allocated for residential development in Ratby.” • Planning: A previous development proposal for up to 9 dwellings behind houses on Markfield Road in 2015 was refused based on the dangerous nature of the access onto Markfield Road as well as other contributing factors. As this proposal is larger and would therefore have a higher impact and larger number of vehicles accessing the development, this raises similar concerns. • Planning: “Amenity. A positive element or elements that contribute to the overall character or enjoyment of an area. For example, open land, trees, historic buildings and the inter-relationship between them, or less tangible factors such as tranquillity.” • The Planning Portal (https://www.planningportal.co.uk/ ) is essentially a national data base providing information and guidance for everyone from developers to planning officers to lay people. • However, amenity is not defined in law. It is a planning term and not technically quantifiable. A good standard of amenity in one location isn’t the same as elsewhere (e.g. city vs village). Noise can adversely affect amenity, as can air quality, light pollution, shadowing or the size of a building. In making a recommendation, planners make a judgement based on all these types of impacts about whether amenity is unduly harmed. The Planning Committee will need to consider whether the extra traffic will impact on the amenity
of residents. • Highways: 175 houses would also create a minimum of 350 extra car movements each day onto a busy Markfield Road. • Local Impact: Nursey places there is a severe lack in the number of nursery school places in Ratby to support working parents. • Local Impact: Residential development both outside and along the Ratby boundary threatens to overrun Ratby’s infrastructure and create concern in the general public about the potential loss of the rural landscape and place strain on public services. • Local Impact: The northernmost field identified for development in this planning application shows clearly preserved ridge and furrow farming. Examples of mediaeval strip farming (ridge and furrow) should be given special design consideration in any future development. This to my knowledge has not been considered. • Local Impact: There are concerns regarding the increase in the number of school children walking this route to B rookvale College and significant risks should the pedestrian access from the development onto Groby Road become a vehicle access. • Local Impact: The existing facilities of the village are not designed to cope with an influx of 175-700+ individuals requiring doctors, shops, school, pre-school etc. The existing facilities (particularly the school) are not in any position to expand further due to the lack of available space. • Local Impact: It should be noted that a tremendous turn-out of village residents was shown at the Developers “Public Consultation” which was held in Ratby Library, the majority of whom objected to the proposals. The record of the Public Consultation available on the Planning Portal states that the attendees to the consultation were mainly from Ratby and suggested therefore that the concerns are a localised issue. What they fail to recognise is that previously in the document they indicate the area within which they publicised the event, which was exclusively Ratby. It is highly likely therefore, that had the Public Consultation been advertised to a wider audience that the representation of residents on the day would have come from a wider area. Please take this into consideration.

• Environmental: Bats are known to roost in the trees along the northern boundary of Groby Road gardens and the vicarage. They can be seen foraging at dusk throughout the summer. These areas have not been considered as valuable for bats but removal of their foraging pathways and habitat would have a detrimental impact on these protected species. • Environmental: There are several known active badger setts within Martinshaw Woods. The badger population will almost definitely be using the adjoining fields and hedgerows for foraging as a part of their territory. • Environmental: The ecological value of Martinshaw Woods was glossed over in the ecology report, and it was not identified as an area of semi-natural ancient woodland, a habitat which can be sensitive to boundary pressures and relies on adjacent and associated habitats. • Environmental: The southern-most field was identified in the ecology report as being semi-improved neutral grassland, this is a priority habitat in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and the Leicestershire and Rutland Local Biodiversity Action Plan. • Environmental: The environmental surveys provided by Charter House stated that bird song had been recorded as a source of noise pollution! The following points refers to statements made in the Ratby Village Design Statement: • Roads and Streets: Markfield Road is the main route from Ratby to the NW, including the M1 North. Its junction with Main Street and Groby Road is very busy at peak times. The main road curves gently downhill into the village which can encourage speeding. • Roads and Streets: Accessing Groby and Markfield Roads from drives at school times or at rush hour is already unsafe and difficult and despite the traffic calming measures installed, many road users still drive at excessive speeds. • Roads and Streets: Groby Road is the main road from Ratby to the A46 trunk road and the A50 into Leicester. As such it attracts considerable traffic at peak times. Recent traffic calming measures have helped to reduce speeding along this narrow road. In addition to the same concerns highlighted for Markfield Road, the students from Ratby attending Brookvale College walk along the narrow footpath on this road twice a day at peak hours. • Environmental: There will be a significant loss of hedgerows and mature trees should this development proceed. This will have a dramatic impact on local wildlife, including birds, mammals, reptiles and bats. Several notable species were recorded during the ecology surveys and the site was considered to have “Local Value”.
Have Your Say On Protecting Public Space Residents across the borough are being asked for their views on rules that help to tackle the problems associated with public drinking, the taking of drugs and so called 'legal highs' in all public areas of the borough. The rules also apply to irresponsible dog owners who do not pick up after their pets or who do not have their pets under control as well as help prevent a wider range of other environmental nuisances that can be tricky to curtail. First introduced in 2016, the rules are set out in a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). Now the council is looking to renew the PSPO and is asking the public for their views as well as inviting people to suggest changes. A PSPO is a measure, created by the AntiSocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, which is intended to deal with activities carried out in a public space that have a detrimental effect on the local community’s quality of life. Since it was first adopted in the borough in 2016, the PSPO has enabled the council to impose restrictions within any open area and prevented individuals or groups committing anti-social behaviour in public spaces. A breach of the PSPO is a criminal offence and can result in a £100 fixed penalty fine. More serious offences can lead to prosecution with a maximum fine of £1,000 One of the biggest issues people raise across Hinckley and Bosworth are the concerns about dog fouling and increased concerns about drug taking. We would urge all residents with concerns to respond to the consultation. The menaces of dog fouling in our green spaces and drug taking in public spaces need to be tackled and the public’s views and input into this is vital.” The Order for Hinckley and Bosworth currently bans the dealing and use of drugs, so-called 'legal highs' and alcohol in all public areas. At the same time the order requires dog owners to pick up after their dog and to keep their dog under control, when on or off the lead. • The consultation is open until 11 October 2019 and can be completed online here: www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/pspo19 If you have any questions regarding this consultation or would like a printed copy please email streetscene@hinckley-bosworth. gov.uk or phone 01455 255971.
Recycling Simplified across Leicestershire. District councils in Leicestershire have joined forces to make recycling easier than ever by providing a more consistent recycling service for Leicestershire residents. The majority of county residents are now able to recycle exactly the same materials in their recycling wheelie bins wherever they live in the county. Six district councils have worked together to produce one simple list of what can and
cannot be put into the recycling bin. It is hoped that not only will this offer better consistency for residents countywide, but that it will also encourage residents to recycle more things, more often. A complete list of items that can be recycled can be seen here: www.lesswaste.org.uk/ items-accepted-for-recycling-at-casepak/ Until recently, when recycling bins were emptied by crews in each council area, the contents were taken to several different recycling sites for sorting. Each recycling site had different rules and different processes which meant items that could be recycled in some districts could not be recycled in others. That changed last year and now recycling collections from most districts - Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton and Oadby & Wigston - are now taken to a single materials recycling facility in Leicester which has enabled the councils to team up for the first time. Up to date information on what the recycling is used for is also available at www.lesswaste.org.uk Beverley Jolly, Joint Chief Executive of Harborough District Council and Leicestershire Districts’ Lead on Waste said: "It's been a source of some frustration to Leicestershire residents for some time that items that can be recycled by some councils cannot be recycled by others. It's also an issue that WRAP, the national waste and resources action programme, is keen to tackle as their research says that inconsistency leads to confusion and puts people off recycling so we were keen to work together to produce a single list for recycling that applies countywide. We really hope this will make recycling easier than ever for Leicestershire residents, leading to more recycling and less waste going to landfill.” I want to thanks residents for their kind words and support at this difficult time. I am now back working and supporting residents. Jenny insisted I continue my work as a Councillor and get re-elected and continue the work I have been doing since joining the Parish Council 23 years ago. I have also been given the honour of taking over Jenny’s position as vice chair of the Parish Council. Best Wishes Ozzy. Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Best Regards
Chris & Ozzy.

Dinky and Doris have been found!
We have wonderful news that Dinky and Doris have been returned to their rightful owners. We would like to thank everyone who helped in their search for them. Thank you!
A distinctly autumnal feel now – summer seems to have done its thing and is rapidly retreating. We hope all our Library customers had a good break and lots of lovely times wherever they went. The Library has been pretty quiet whilst you have all been away, so not a great deal to report this month. We are all busy making brulees, profiteroles and the like for our Ukulele Gig on 6th September and are looking forward to it immensely. Likewise the Quiz Night on 4th October, though for this event outside caterers are supplying the fish and chip supper. It’s worth noting that our Steering Group members work tremendously hard to mount these events and we are extremely grateful to them for their dedication and contribution. We have one further event to announce, a Meet the Author afternoon on Saturday 2nd November at 2.00 pm in the Library.
Ratby Methodist Church 31 Station Road
Leicester. You can hear the authors read their work and, if you want, purchase a copy of the book at a reduced price and ask the contributors to sign it. There is no charge for this event, and you can purchase coffee and cakes during the afternoon whilst you chat to the authors. This should be of interest to all of us who live in or near Leicester, and to those who are interested in developing their own creative writing. By the way, did you know that we apparently have our very own ghost by the Braunstone Crossroads? Come and find out more!
And don’t forget:
This is to celebrate the publication of An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Leicester, edited by Jon Wilkins. This is a brand new anthology of creative writing about our very own Leicester. It is a collection of poetry, prose, essays and flash fiction intended to enthuse and inspire the reader about

good time, the weather was kind and the atmosphere was fantastic, a few thank yous, Lee Hand, Stevo Macleod and the cricket committee, Jack Foley, Andy Culver and Football committee, Tequila, Annie-Mae, Kelly, James, Ash and Jade, proof the community is a strong one. Hello everyone and I can’t believe I sit writing another column for the Local Magazine’s September issue, this year is flying by a little to quick for my liking as we are fast approaching winter!
the loop. I think it is imperative that we offer complete transparency to enable everyone to know facts not hearsay and if anyone wants to contact me for information please do.
Thank you to everyone that turned up to the public meeting that we held at the club. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the people of the village the situation the club finds itself in at this moment in time and to look for assistance and ideas to help the club move out of the position which we find ourselves in and to help put an infrastructure in place to help the club grow in the future.
I am delighted to announce the return of the Ratby Sports Table Skittles team who will be playing their home games every other Tuesday evening from the 10th September at the club, great news for the club and we wish Colin Gilmore and his merry men (and women) the very best for the up coming season! The Pool league starts next week and we are delighted to have the A and B team again, A for average B for Brilliant but don’t tell the A team I said that!
The purpose of the meeting was not to apportion blame or point fingers only to state facts. Unfortunately there were some sections of the audience that seemed intent at passing the blame and slopping shoulders rather than make themselves accountable for certain things that have happened over the last 20 years.
The Football season for our teams has started and I wish them well! The cricket season is still going and I should have up dates in the next issue to how our teams finished. We are available to book to hold your function with us, kids parties, 50th’s, 21st’s a great location for any occasion and it’s FREE!!
What is now imperative is that whatever happens moving forward the foundations we build the future on are solid ones.
On 27th September we have the King of the Road Karaoke night at the Club, FREE ENTRY 8pm start everyone welcome!
Thank you all again for coming. What we intend to do is have update meetings to let people know what the situation is at the moment and also for people to bring ideas to the table to help the clubs protection and growth. We are looking for volunteers to do anything from the odd shift behind the bar, organising events to being a treasurer or secretary, if you are interested please get in touch, also look out for the date of our next public meeting to keep you all in
August 18th will live long in the memory as one of the great days in the clubs history we had the Ed Lee Memorial Day and the Ratby Panthers Football tournament, this was a fantastic day with so many people turning out to show there support and just have a
