Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get

from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Is Your Local School a SCoRE School? Get practical support and guidance on energy efficiency from Leicestershire County Council. The Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency (SCoRE) is a 12 month practical programme which helps schools reduce energy bills and save money. Advice and guidance is given on energy efficiency, including adjusting boiler times and temperatures, switching off lighting and electrical equipment and draft proofing. SCoRE supports many aspects of the curriculum including geography, science, maths, design and citizenship. Students are encouraged to be part of the programme and work with staff to achieve the best savings.

Big Wild Sleepout Have a wild night out... ... join in the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout. From 16-22 June, we’re encouraging people to spend a night under the stars to find out which creatures they share their homes with, and raise money to help protect wildlife. UK wildlife will play host to all kinds of campers – adventurous campers will be building and sleeping in dens and shelters, some will stick to the traditional tent, while others plan to sleep on their garden trampoline. To help people get the most out of their wild night out, we’ve produced a free fundraising pack full of fun ideas to make raising money really easy. For those who don’t have a garden, the RSPB is also organising some exciting Big Wild Sleepout events across the UK. With special night time activities like outdoor cooking, stories round the campfire and night-time strolls, all events are different and a full list is available on the RSPB website rspb.org.uk/sleepout The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB’s ‘Giving Nature a Home’ campaign, which is aimed at inspiring everyone to do their bit for nature, wherever they live and however big their outside space.

Manor High School, Oadby has also taken part in the scheme. Their electricity consumption was reduced by 12%, and despite a cold winter, their gas usage relative to other years, was also reduced. Paul Clarke, site manager and Liam Powell, head teacher worked to apply the SCoRE principles across the whole school community and achieved savings of £9,400. Nichole Browne, School Environment Officer, Leicestershire County Council, said: “Applications for the next phase of the SCoRE programme are being taken now, and we look forward to working with a new set of schools. Schools can make significant savings on their energy use. They achieve real energy efficiencies when the plan is embedded throughout the whole school.” Interested schools should apply before Friday 25th April 2014 to be part of the next SCoRE programme by calling Nichole Browne 0116 305 5593, Nichole.Browne@leics.gov.uk

Become a ‘Crimestopper’ in Leicestershire Keep your community safe and show that crime really does matter Independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is appealing for enthusiastic members of the public to join its volunteer team in Leicestershire and Rutland, and support the fight against crime in the county. The charity last month launched a national discussion on key crimes affecting the UK public and is now seeking out willing individuals to join its growing family of crime fighters. In Leicestershire alone, 1681 pieces of useful information about crime were received by Crimestoppers in the year 2012/13 leading to 152 arrests. Whether your expertise is in business, the media, or maybe even fundraising, we’d love to hear from you – all we ask is that you have a passion for your local area and you share the same vision as we do – that everyone deserves to live in a community free of crime. East Midlands Regional Manager, Kiran Dhanda, said: “Volunteering for Crimestoppers is a great way to make a difference and I’m really looking forward to growing our team to make Leicestershire and Rutland safer places to live and work.” “You can dedicate as much or as little time as you like – every little helps and your efforts will be rewarded with the satisfaction that you are playing a part in keeping your community safe.” "Roles could be anything from working with local businesses to gain financial support to promoting our Fearless message to 11-16 year olds. We are also keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in taking on Treasury or Secretarial roles.”

New detailed map of Charnwood Forest

Age Concern Birstall and Wanlip

Getting out and exploring Charnwood Forest is about to get a whole lot easier with a new detailed map covering the whole of the area on a single sheet.

Age Concern Birstall and Wanlip is your locally run day centre for the frail, or lonely elderly people of Birstall. We are located in St James day centre next to the parish council offices on Birstall Road.

The colourful 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey based map, designed by award-winning Northamptonshire-based map publisher Global Mapping, shows additional footpaths, bridleways and permissive paths. It also shows public access land and includes information on places to visit etc.

The day centre has been running for over twenty years, it was started jointly by The Reverend Charles Bradshaw, vicar of St James Church and Tony Donovan, executive director of Age Concern Leicester Shire and Rutland (now Age UK LeicesterShire and Rutland) .

It only costs £4.99 and is available to buy locally and online. Publication has been made possible by funding from Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and the Ramblers Association.

The day centre commenced life at Longslade College in 1991 then had a short spell in the Catholic Church then moved to its present location and was officially opened in 1993 by Sir Roy Griffiths. Age Concern Birstall and Wanlip is an independent Age Concern and is known as a “Friend of Age UK” which means they are there for us to refer to for help and advice. The group meets on a Thursday. Our bus which you may have seen around the village collects the members in the morning and takes them to the day centre where they have tea, coffee and a biscuit (or two) followed by lunch and a cup of tea in the afternoon before heading off home. Activities such as games and quizzes usually take place or maybe an entertainer will come and sing and play and everyone is encouraged to join in. It is a chance to get out of the house if mobility is a problem and offer the possibility some respite for a carer. If you, a relative, a friend or neighbour would benefit from some company and would like to come and join us we have a one or two vacancies. The cost is £20 for the day inclusive. For further information you can ring Jo on a Thursday on 01162677023.

Roy Denney, Chairman of the Ramblers, Leicestershire & Rutland Area is also Chairman of the Leicestershire Local Access Forum. In that role he instigated the map and says, ‘As so often seems to be the case wherever you are, if you want to explore Charnwood Forest you find yourself walking off the edge of the OS map. Parts of the Forest are already well-loved by many Leicestershire people, but we hope that this locally centred map will encourage them to explore some of its lesser known corners and bring people in from further afield, boosting the local economy’ The map is currently available from Bradgate Park, with other outlets to follow shortly, or online from www.mapstop.co.uk

White Horse Duck Race’s 6th Year Leicestershire Cares supports Birstall Parks Youth Café Birstall, Bank Holiday Monday 5th May will be the 6th annual White Horse Duck race, and is set to be the most exciting yet! Over the previous 5 years the White Horse duck race has raised over £16,000 pounds for local charities and this year there will be even more entertainment to make it a great family day out.

Leicestershire Cares is organising another Coat Drive appeal in September 2014 and would like to hear from community and voluntary organisations who would like to receive coats for their clients.

Birstall

“Through supporting different charities over the years, each one has brought something new to the Duck Race, helping it to grow into what is now a firmly established date in the Birstall social Calendar.” Said Charlotte Foy of the White Horse This year The White Horse will host the charity event for the Birstall Park Youth Café. The Café was set up 6 years ago by Birstall Parish Council when a need for a meeting place for young people became apparent. It is seen as a unique initiative which has become a model for other Parishes. “I was overjoyed when we learned that Birstall Youth Café had been chosen to be the beneficiary of this year’s Duck Race, I couldn’t wait to tell the Youth Workers, because I knew how much this would mean to them. It will also mean a lot to the young people of Birstall, that use the Youth Café and to promote the fact that this facility is there”. Said Sue Coulson – Deputy Clerk to the Birstall Parish Council The Youth Café is held on a Wednesday evening for 8-11 year olds and Fridays for 12-19 year olds and is attended by as many as 60 young people. “It is a real plus to Birstall, bringing young people together from all parts of the village and giving them a place where they can learn new skills in a fun environment” Said Sue. The White Horse Team are looking forward to working directly with the young people who attend the Youth Café to get them involved with all areas of the organization of the day. “We are looking forward to hearing the young peoples thoughts about new fund raising ideas and getting inspiration from them about fresh ways of spreading awareness of the event” Said Charlotte Foy. Sue Coulson responded “Not only will it enable the young people to get involved with their community, but also to be part of fund raising for their own activities, and for them to see what a wonderful and rewarding thing it is for them to be doing. I’m sure that the young people and their parents will get behind this fantastic community event, by raising awareness of the event and for ‘getting stuck in’ on the day. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the organisers for choosing the Youth Café and to offer our assistance in any way that we can”. On May 5th the stalls and games will begin at 12 noon, and the duck race will start at 2pm. Other attractions for the day are; Bouncy castle, Teddy tombola, stocks, hook a duck, raffle, mini duck race, Duck Derby, Boat rides, cake stall, tuck shop, BBQ and much more to be announced. Ducks will be available from April 1st from the Youth Cafe and of course the White Horse, Birstall. There are cash prizes to be won of £100, £50, £25 and many other prizes kindly donated by local business’s. Ducks can also be bought on the day of the event so come on down and join in the fun! Families and staff at Rainbows children’s hospice thrilled as David Walliams becomes patron Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is delighted to announce David Walliams as its newest patron. Mr Walliams visited the East Midlands’ only children hospice last month, and was so moved by the families he met and the work of the charity, he wanted to get on board. The children, young people, families and staff at Rainbows are all overjoyed to have his valued support. As a Rainbows Patron, Mr Walliams will be supporting the hospice in whatever way his busy schedule allows, which will be invaluable in raising the profile of the charity. Ahead of his last visit, he donated personally signed copies of his books to the children and their siblings and said that he looked forward to visiting again. Mr Walliams said: “I am thrilled to become a patron for Rainbows. It’s a very special place with incredibly inspiring people. I have recently been to the hospice and met some of the children and their families. They have to deal with so much and Rainbows is there for them with smiles, laughter and lots of care and support. I was so moved by the positive atmosphere, that I wanted to get involved. It will be my pleasure to help raise awareness of this charity to help all of the children, young people and families.” Geoff Ellis, chief executive at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, added: “To have Mr Walliams on board is very exciting and we are extremely happy that he has pledged his support to us; we are delighted to welcome him as our newest patron. We are very grateful to all of our patrons and ambassadors for the wonderful work they do for Rainbows and for promoting the charity all over the UK. When Mr Walliams visited last month, everybody loved him and we appreciated him spending valuable time with our children, young people and their families.” Mr Walliams first heard about Rainbows when Susan Taylor very sadly lost her life swimming the English Channel for Rainbows last year. Although he didn't know Susan personally, Mr Walliams was very touched by her story and donated to Rainbows through her Virgin Money website as well as sending messages to Mrs Taylor’s family. This year, Rainbows is celebrating 20 years of care and to commemorate its birthday, the charity wants to raise an extra £100,000 over the year to help fund more children’s nurses. Rainbows cares for 288 children and young people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses as well as supporting 249 bereaved families and 521 siblings. Through its outreach efforts into East Midlands paediatric oncology units, Rainbows is also caring for a growing number of the region’s children with cancer. For more information, visit www.rainbows.co.uk Your views are important so that we can better understand how the proposals could affect you and how we can make these changes work best for you. Local Timber Merchant Celebrates Its 200th Anniversary Leicestershire timber merchant, George Walker Ltd, is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. Although their yard in Syston is primarily a retail outlet, the business was established in 1814 as a haulage business. The company soon became involved in handling logs from the local country estates, and the natural progression into buying and selling timber was made. It was Harry Walker, a descendant of George, who first established a sawmill in the centre of Syston in 1915. From the felling of the tree to the end product, no piece of wood was wasted. The tree tops were bundled up and used to light the furnaces of heavy industry across the Midlands. The large trunks were cut for planks, pit props, railway sleepers and coffins. Even the off cuts were used by the joiners to make cattle cribs, pig troughs and wheelbarrows.

Birstall Village Cricket Club The 2014 season is only days away for BVCC. With the amalgamated of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Leagues, BVCC are eagerly awaiting the new challenges that face them this season. The season begins on Saturday 19th April where the Birstall 1st XI will play their home game vs Leicester Caribbeans away at Sileby due to the wicket being unavailable following the football season. Birstall look to add to their already strong line up, but with the loss of Dave Sharpe who is moving club to play with his sons will have a huge hole to fill. Dave has been an integral part of the club both on and off the field for many years and has fortunately decided to continue his role and involvement as club secretary. Birstall Village CC has entered the Challenge cup where they have home ground advantage against Loughborough Town 3rd XI in early May. The Birstall Vipers get their evening league campaign under way against Quorn away on the 24th April. Birstall junior under 17’s team will start their season with a home cup match against Crown Hills CC on 28th April. We look forward to giving these promising juniors much senior experience throughout the year.

In 1976, the timber yard in Syston was subject to a compulsory purchase order to make way for shops and houses, and the business moved to its present location on the edge of town. The growth of high production mills in Wales and Scotland lead to a gradual decline in sawmilling on site, although the demand for fencing and landscaping timber was increasing. The decision was made to remove the cranes and heavy machinery to make way for more stock, and the retail business expanded. However, to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the company, George Walker Ltd is set to open a new sawmill at Belvoir Castle this year. Progress at the sawmill can be followed on the Forest Products page of their website: www.george-walker.co.uk.

Spring is in the air – A cliché perhaps, but it really is. The blossom is out in the hedgerows and all the leaves are breaking out of their buds. It is probably fairly well known that the earliest blossom is that of Blackthorn (Sloes), but the other blooms that are open around the same time are Cherry Plums – a native species of stone fruit. It is an interesting note to point out that fruit flowers in a particular sequence (alphabetically, but back-to-front) with Plums being first, followed by Pears, Cherries and Apples. Many of these fruit species are self-fertile, meaning they can bear fruit if pollen comes into contact with the stigma, even if it is from itself. Some trees require cross-pollination - they need pollen from another type of the same family to be able to produce fruit (Pears are only compatible with Pears), but there are also some varieties (known as triploids) that need two pollinators to successfully produce fruitlets and a well known example of this is the Bramley apple. But of all of these beautiful, delicate flowers, Mayblossom (Hawthorn) is probably my favourite. The scent wafts down the roads and you know that Summer is on its way! If you would like anymore information about flowering plants, pollination and insect pollinators or edible crops, please feel free to contact Leicester Rowena Garden Centre on 0116 2376500

Redgate - Open Day and Dog Show, Sunday 10th August Invitation to Stallholders / Crafters / Activity organisers / Display groups Well, we’ve had our first planning meeting at Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, (situated by the side of the A511 next to Stanton under Bardon), and we would like to invite you to join us this year on Sunday 10th August for our annual Open Day and Dog Show – a great family day out. Timings will be 10.00 – 3.30pm. Charges for Stallholders/Sales:• Cost per 6’ table – under cover The main difference this year is the ‘rental’ cost per 6’ table provided by us. This year unfortunately, due to fast rising costs, we will have to charge £15 per table (with as many as possible situated in the marquees or under one of our own gazebos). • Cover We are just in the process of sorting out new marquees and we undertake to provide as much cover as we possibly can. We will update you in plenty of time before the event. • Your own stand / gazebo? If you would rather bring your own pop-up gazebo and table/salescounter, do please let us know and we can start planning out the site for this year’s event. The cost for a space for your own gazebo – up to 3m x 3m – and bringing your own table/sales-counter - would be £20 in total. Please email me if your gazebo is bigger than this and we can discuss arrangements individually. • Chairs Also with regard to chairs, we will only have a few available as most will be reserved for the Dog Show and agility exhibitors/spectators, and again, if you could bring your own folding chair(s) in the back of the car when you come, that would be great. Please note – if you are a CHARITY – you can have a space for a PR table free of charge (please bring own table). • Exhibitors warmly invited! Please contact me if you could run an activity or bring an interesting exhibit for families to look at (animal, vegetable, mineral or vehicle!)
