By Canal from Loughborough to Normanton. Dr D A C McNeil Yesterday I joined a group of members of the Enrych charity for a canal trip from Loughborough to Normanton on Soar organised and run by the Peter Le Marchant Trust. Enrych is the new name for the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation which was set up in 1986 to cater for the needs of disabled people. The local branch is based in Coalville at the Marlene Reid centre and looks after the needs of disabled people in Leicestershire and Derbyshire. The Peter Le Marchant Trust was set up in 1976 from the bequest of Peter Le Marchant to his sister Clare. It runs three canal boats from its headquarters at Beeches Road, Loughborough, which are fully equipped to carry disabled people; the Symphony runs day trips from Loughborough to either Normanton or Mountsorrel whilst the other two have sleeping accommodation and can range further over our canal network. Several of our party were in wheel-chairs. To get them down into the cabin a lift is fitted so that they can be wheeled up a ramp and onto the deck, then onto the lift, and finally lowered into the cabin. In fact this was the only passengers could get into the cabin. At the stern of the boat the crew had their own access but this was nominally private. Once in the cabin people in wheel-chairs had a good view of the outside world as the windows were low especially for them. Tea, coffee and biscuits were served during the trip, and at Normanton we had an excellent lunch at the Plough public house. On both the out-going and return trip we were entertained by a folk-singer with guitar and mouth organ accompaniment . I think it fair to say that a good time was had by all.

Your Local MP Edward Argar... Email: edward.argar.mp@parliament.uk Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA Welcome to the first, of what I hope will be many contributions to this Magazine as your Member of Parliament. Firstly, thank you very much for electing me as your MP on 7th May. Regardless of how you voted, I will always endeavor to assist you when you seek my help, to work in partnership with your excellent local Councillors, and to work for the whole community - it has been an incredibly busy and active three months in the constituency and in Parliament since being elected, and it is a pleasure and privilege to serve the people of Rothley, Mountsorrel and the whole Charnwood constituency. Parliament has now started its summer break, but that doesn’t mean the work stops! The letters and casework still flow in, but the break in parliamentary business means more time to get around even more events and meetings back home here in Charnwood. So…..please do let me know if there are any community events you are organizing in Rothley or Mountsorrel over the summer that you’d like me to come to. I’ve already spent a lot of time in both villages over the past couple of months and most recently had the pleasure of being at the Mountsorrel Revival Festival, at a fantastic garden fete charity fundraiser for the Lions Club hosted by some very generous Rothley people in their beautiful garden, and am hoping to visit Rothley Primary School when term resumes – but I am always open to more invitations!

Reaching the end of the ‘summer term’ has given me the opportunity to reflect on the first couple of months as an MP. As well as dealing with the casework and many hundreds of letters and emails each week and setting up a parliamentary office from scratch (for the first month or so newly elected MPs have no office and telephone, and only get a locker and the hope of finding an empty desk in a corridor or Committee Room!) there has been a very busy schedule in Parliament, with legislation, statements, and questions. It has often been said that Parliament is a little like Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter books and films, and there is a bit of truth in this – it is a strange place, with miles of corridors and staircases that emerge in places you wouldn’t predict, masses of rules and traditions to learn, and votes sometimes going on until after 10pm, but it is also a wonderful place in which it is a privilege to sit as your MP, with a lot of important work to do. And, despite the seemingly odd traditions, it does work as a forum for real debate. In the weeks since I was elected I have spoken on over a dozen occasions on topics ranging from broadband coverage in Charnwood and electrification of the East Midlands Main Line, to the nuclear deal with Iran, mental health care and, most recently, the Budget debate. While at first daunting, the Chamber of the Commons genuinely does offer the opportunity for all opinions to be voiced and

to ensure a point is heard and often acted upon. When Parliament returns in September I will be leading a debate on a subject that affects many in our community, and beyond - dementia care - and I would welcome any personal experiences that you would like to tell me about as I prepare for that debate – do feel free to write to me or email me. If you feel that I can ever be of assistance to you as your MP, or if you want to invite me to a community event, please do feel to get in touch with me using the details above. In addition to my routine MP surgeries, over the summer I am also holding a series of local village surgeries with the local councillors to make it easier for people to meet us, and am hoping to hold one in the Rothley Centre & one in the Memorial Hall in Mountsorrel – details to be publicised nearer the time. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months, and in the meantime I wish you all a very happy and pleasant summer, & hope to see many of you in the course of it!

Member of Parliament for Charnwood

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get

from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

More parents urged to take up free child care LEICESTERSHIRE families are being urged to find out if they qualify for free child care for their two-year-olds. The call comes as new figures published last week by Ofsted show that 66 per cent of county parents are taking advantage of the offer for two-yearolds – this compares to a national average of 58 per cent. Up to 570 hours of free child care are available for families if they meet certain criteria, and Leicestershire County Council is encouraging mums, dads and carers to use an online checker to see if they’re eligible. It’s thought that there are around 1,800 county youngsters who could benefit. The funding has been provided by the government and is designed to benefit low-income families and help parents return to work. The statistics also reveal that 94 per cent of three and four-year-oldsare using the free child care they’re entitled to, in line with the national figure. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Research shows that good quality child care gives youngsters the best possible start in life. “Although nearly two out of three parents are making the most of the funding, we want to increase this and are encouraging people to find out if they meet the criteria.” Parents of two-year-olds can find out if they qualify for by calling 0116 305 6208 or visiting: www.myearly learning.co.uk/ earlyyears/ apply

Cycling sessions for youngsters Children can improve their cycling with fun and friendly coaching sessions in Loughborough. Charnwood Borough Council is holding sessions to help children develop their cycling, improve their road safety and also give them an introduction to cycling as a sport. The Community Cycling Club is for children five and over. It takes place every Wednesday, 6.15pm to 7.45pm at Charnwood College. Each session costs £2 per child and there is no need to pre-book. The sessions will be led by coaches trained by British Cycling, the national governing body for cycle sport. The club is supported by the Choose How You Move campaign, which encourages alternative methods of transport in the County. The council will also be in Loughborough’s Market Place on August 24, 11am – 3pm, offering cycle safety and security tips alongside Dr Bike who will carry out small repairs and bike adjustments for free.

Great Central Railway Past, Present & Future A talk by Tom Ingall For the Friends of Charnwood Forest Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall on Monday 21st September at 7.30pm. Tom Ingall grew up in Leicestershire and now works for the B.B.C. in Yorkshire. He has been a volunteer at Great Central Railway for 25 years. The Great Central Railway opened in 1899, the last main line built in Britain. It was developed from earlier lines, notably the Midland, Sheffield & Lincolnshire (MS&L) irreverently known as Money Sunk and Lost! Between Leicester and Loughborough the GCR passed close to Charnwood Forest and encountered a landscape of particular beauty, including Bradgate, Swithland Reservoir and the tree covered south-eastern part of Charnwood. Our speaker will tell you much more! All are welcome. Members attend free. Visitors pay £3 including refreshments. Further information--Peter www.focf.org.uk

Meeting the needs of the local community

Help our Hedgehogs DO YOU have a fence around your property? Then how do the local hedgehogs come and go? Now environmentalists are urging home-owners to cut several CDsized gaps in their fences to help hedgehogs get out and about a bit more - to find more food, and to find a mate.

Since the Soar Valley Community Food Project opened on 1 September 2014 it has given out over 300 food parcels. The project, based in Rothley Baptist Church in the centre of Rothley, provides food to those in need as well as a signposting people to other assistance that might be available. We do this in a relaxed manner over a drink and biscuit. We are able to support people to a better future by helping them in the short term to put food on the table and to assist them find a way forward out of the crisis. Some of the examples of what we have been able to achieve are: • Chasing the council to complete vital repairs to a rental house that had been outstanding for over a year, •

• • •

Getting a young family’s gas reconnected in the to ensure heating depths of winter,

Supporting a family having major issues with neighbours,

being evicted from house, Going to court with a family to help them avoid their

Being able to provide food to individuals and families who have not eaten for several days.

Hedgehog numbers have declined drastically in recent decades. The population is thought to be shrinking by three per cent a year. Hedgehogs are thought to need to cover about a mile a night, but they won’t get far if they can’t get in or out of your garden.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society estimates that from about 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s, we are now down to well below 1.5 million (the number estimated in the mid-Nineties).

THE GREAT BIRSTALL

BAKE OFF

Great Birstall Bake off set for success in its Third Year Summer is in full swing and that only means one thing; it's time to dust off those baking tins, perfect your pastry, and prepare for the biggest Great Birstall Bake Off yet! After the unmitigated success of last year's competition, in which £1023.82 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support, the White Horse will host this year's event once again. And, if the popularity of 2014's Bake Off is anything to go by, then the day itself will be one to savour for a while. Beccy Kay, Founder of the White Horse’s Great Birstall Bake off commented “after the huge success of last years Bake off we are extremely excited about what the bakers of Birstall will offer us this year. We had incredible talent from both junior and adult entries and from people who had never baked before to those with more experience. Everyone who got involved either through baking or attending the coffee morning all had a wonderful time and ultimately we raised a superb amount of money (nearly double the previous year) for Macmillan. So please get your aprons on, even if you think you're 'not good enough' because it's a whole lot of fun and we want to make even more for a great cause this year!” Baking categories are set to include; Cupcake, Cake, Bread, Sweet Bake, Savoury Bake, Biscuit, Decoration and Under 16's. The judges were astounded by the variety in the 2014 Savoury category and are hoping for more of the same in 2015. Mr Allen of Allen's Family Bakery has once again very kindly agreed to donate yeast to any entrant wishing to bake bread. And with the event going from strength to strength, this year there'll be plenty of entertainment to ensure the day raises as much money as possible for an extremely worthwhile cause. So if the allure of some of Birstall's best cakes isn't enough, there'll be garden party games, face painting, a bouncy castle and live music all on Sunday 20th September at the Macmillan World's Biggest Coffee Morning at the White Horse. And with members of last year's judging panel back for more, the judging will be in qualified and knowledgeable hands. The judging panel will be following the WI guidelines which judge on characteristics such as texture, appearance and flavour. YOUR WILDLIFE GARDEN – BRING IT ON! by NIGEL SLATER With so much of our countryside being taken over by development we can all make a small contribution towards helping wildlife by seeing our gardens in a different light-as a wildlife site or ‘patch of protected area’. Nigel’s first love is birds but has boundless enthusiasm for everything in the natural world and how vital it is to encourage all forms of wildlife, including birds, to visit our gardens for species survival. When: Tuesday 10th November 7.30pm Where: The Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley Fee: Members free. Visitors £2 Children free. Free on-site parking and easy access The Birstall Birdwatching Club was formed in 1978 with 12 members paying an annual fee of £1. Now meeting in Rothley after losing our Birstall venue our aim is to encourage people of all ages to enjoy wildlife but our main focus is birds. We have illustrated talks in the winter and outdoor visits in the summer. Membership is only £8 for the year and this gives free admission to all meetings. Visitors £2 per meeting with children free.
