CELEBRATE JESUS : MR SCRAPPY VISITS ST JAMES CHURCH BIRSTALL YOUNG PEOPLE RECEIVE BIBLES ON THEIR JOURNEY OF FAITH At the Altogether Service for Families, on February 2nd 2014, many people brought their puppets young and old, notably Emu and Sooty, to join with John Fryer of Primary Concern, and his infamous companion, Mr Scrappy who accompanies him to School and Church visits, telling Bible Stories. Today, is the Festival of Candlemas, when Jesus, as a very young Jewish boy would be presented to the Priest Simeon, in the Temple. For his parents and family this would be an important Celebration. The children found out about the story of Jesus’s birth, with Chocolates made by the Meaningful Chocolate Company, sticking pictures on them to find the order of events. Lots of ‘ pick and mix’ sweets were shared at the Peace, between congregation members, provided a further surprise, with Jelly Beans, pastilles, fried eggs, fudge and other goodies.. The Service celebrated an important Milestone in the Faith Journey for 7 of our young people aged 9 – 13, who are studying on the Anglican Course,

Welcome to the Lord’s Table. This prepares them for receiving Communion and understanding what the various parts of the Service. The Bible Story for this week, told the story of people Invited to the Lord’s Banquet who all had reasons for not coming. Jesus sent out his disciples to find those who wanted to come and celebrate We are asked to respond, there is room for all around God’s Table, to share the Bread and Wine. On the 1st Sunday of each Month St James holds a Service for Families on a Theme, with an Informal atmosphere, plenty of family friendly activities, and something in the Service for everyone. On other Sundays, during Holy Communion, we provide an exciting programme of Bible Stories and activities run for any child (parents/grandparents/carers) up to about 9 years, and the course provides teaching for older Junior and teenage children. Each week we have lots of lovely home made refreshments, after the Service about 11.00 am If you are round about, come in and join us, we would love to meet you. VACANT ALLOTMENT PLOTS IN BIRSTALL - AVAILABLE NOW!!!
STRESSED BY DEBT??
Around 11% of the UK population have unsustainable levels of debt. This is causing significant stress to both those who have the debt and also their families. These debts often arise when unexpected events happen, for example redundancy or illness, or when unexpected costs occur. We tend to assume that we are the only people struggling, but it is a very common occurrence so there is no reason to be embarrassed. In response to this crisis the Soar Valley Community Money Advice Centre has opened. The centre has trained advisors who offer free face to face debt counselling in a confidential and supportive way. They will go through your finances, prepare a budget and negotiate with anyone you owe money to. This will remove the pressure that your creditors are putting on you and ensure an affordable payment plan is agreed. The aim is to support you to a future free of debt. In addition the Centre can advise on benefit entitlement, other free services available, cost saving ideas and budgeting. Centre Manager, Tim Jackson commented “Over the last year we have been developing the vision for the Centre, so it is fantastic to open our doors to support those who need help. The team have a real heart to help those whose life is being impacted by debt and to help them to a debt free future. We are supported by Community Money Advice which is a national charity overseeing 130 centres across the UK.” The Centre is based at Rothley Baptist Church, Woodgate, Rothley and is open Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. It is open to anyone who needs help so please pop in and see us, call/text 07743 765958 or email soarvalleycma@gmail.org and start the journey to a debt free future.
Birstall Parish Council currently have vacant plots on their Meadow Lane site and the Greengate Lane site. Even better news! There currently isn’t a waiting list, so if you are a resident of Birstall or Wanlip, you could have an immediate start for producing healthy delicious fruit and vegetables at a relatively low cost for your family. New allotment holders find that they quickly develop new skills and knowledge and many plot holders see the development of their allotment as part of a positive lifestyle choice. They are also a good way to make friends with people who share your interest in gardening. They are a great way to relax and unwind from the stresses of modern living and provide an excellent form of exercise for people of all ages and abilities. If you are interested, please telephone us to view one of the vacant plots for an immediate start. Birstall Parish Council, Council Offices, Birstall Road, Birstall, Leicester, LE4 4DH. Inspector appointed to consider Charnwood’s Core Strategy Continued from page 1 - Initial hearing sessions have been proposed for three days between March 19-21 and will be held in Loughborough with the date and venue to be confirmed shortly. Councillor David Gaskell, the Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Planning, said: “The Planning Inspectorate has now appointed an inspector to consider our submission. “The initial hearings will focus on the Council’s Duty to Cooperate and assessment of housing numbers. These are issues which are commonly raised by Planning Inspectors, particularly during examinations over the last 12 months. “The Inspector will, in due course, provide more details of the issues he wants to specifically address as part of our submission. “Once he has heard these matters, the Inspector will then take a view about whether to proceed to the rest of the hearing.” The initial hearings will be held in public, with participants invited by the Inspector. The Examination is to test the plan and to address any issues of soundness which may arise.

Seeing the doctor for loneliness Up to 10 patients a day visit each GP surgery because they are simply lonely. And nearly half of doctors say they are not confident that they can help their condition. Those are the findings of a recent survey carried out for the Campaign to End Loneliness. “Far too many people are feeling so lonely - and are at a loss about what to do about it - that they end up going to see their doctor,” says director Kate Jopling. She is calling for a more co-ordinated public health response that targets resources to help support lonely people. Figures suggest that almost three million people over 65 are lonely.

Two fascinating countries – one awesome charity challenge! We have decided to take on the challenge in aid of Loros. It's the only way we felt we could give something back to a charity that helps such a wide range of illnesses. Not only is it close to both our hearts but we realised that everyone has come across the amazing local work that this charity has done at one point or another in their lives. Both my Auntie and I are doing the charity ride together and after losing my uncle (Lorraine's husband) to cancer as well as other family members and friends we felt that as an Auntie and a Niece duo we should attempt to conquer the world - well the next best thing - cycle the 400km route from Vietnam to Cambodia!! Lorraine had the idea as she is celebrating her 55th birthday and I thought at 26 I'd better go and look after her! LOROS charges no fees for its services, which are available to all local people based upon medical need regardless of their ethnicity or faith. The charity relies upon the generosity
and support of local people, organisations and business, which enables them to raise the £4.5million needed each year to provide their valued services to patients and their families. Their services include a 31-bed hospice, outpatient services, day therapy and a team of nurses in the community. 90% of the money donated to LOROS goes directly towards patient care.

We have since met with the fundraising team at Loros and realised the extent of the amazing work they carry out! We feel so uplifted and positive each time we visit the hospice and we are hoping to raise £6000. We are currently working towards our next fundraising and training milestone -87miles from Leicester to Skegness! We are most looking forwards to: seeing the two amazing countries and most of all finding out if we are up to the challenge! We are most worried about: cycling in the temperatures and humidity of South East

It’s a 999 Emergency calling all ladies to raise funds for LOROS Following the huge success of last year’s Twilight Walk, which raised over £36,000, the LOROS Fundraising team are in full swing preparing for this year’s event on Saturday 26th April. Ladies from across the county will take over the King Power Stadium in Leicester in preparation for the 10km sponsored walk. This year’s “999 Emergency” themed Twilight Walk is sure to be the BIGGEST GIRLS NIGHT OUT Leicester has ever seen and the BIGGEST Twilight Walk yet!
Would you like to encourage the children you know to appreciate books? Then why not invite them to join in the national celebration of World Book Day, which takes place next month, on 6th March.
This special night in Leicester annually unites sisters, mothers, daughters, friends, partners and colleagues from all over the East Midlands to have fun, remember loved ones and raise money for their local Hospice. The unique atmosphere at the event makes it one night you will not want to miss! Laura Betts, Fundraiser at LOROS said; “One of my most memorable days at LOROS was at the Annual LOROS Twilight Walk 2013. The team and I had spent months planning and preparing for this day and it was fantastic to see all the participants taking part. The atmosphere on the evening was electric and although the team had worked from 9am through until midnight you couldn’t help but feel energised by all the smiling faces around you. I didn’t make it home until nearly 1am and although I was completely shattered I couldn’t sleep because I was still buzzing!!”. The theme “999 Emergency” encourages participants to dress up as Doctors, Nurses, Firegirls or Policewomen – merchandise for this event is available on the event’s website. We also look forward to seeing all the ladies creative ideas! The first 50 ladies to sign up will receive a promotional glow-in-the-dark badge with a Sharpie marker. To see more details about the event, a course map and to register please visit www.thetwilightwalk.co.uk Any queries, please call fundraising on 0116 231 8431/2. Please note this is a ladies only event, but men, if you would like to join this crowd of amazing women, the organisers have plenty of opportunities for volunteers available on the night. Please call the LOROS Fundraising Department on 0116 2318431/2 for more information.
World Book Day was launched 17 years ago and aims to encourage a celebration of authors, illustrators, books, and reading. World Book Day therefore sends schools packs of Book Tokens (more than 14 million this year; or one for nearly every child aged under 18 in the country!) and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs. Children can then take their voucher to a local bookseller and use it to pick one of eight (new and free) books. Or, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing more than £2.99 at a participating bookshop. For more details of how to get involved, please visit: www.worldbookday.com. World Book Day has a great aim: to get children closer to the books and authors they already love, and then introducing them to more books and authors they’ll love every bit as much in the future.

Charity Whist Drives
March: the month of self-harm awareness More than 22,000 children and teenagers were treated in hospital in 2012 for selfharming. And they were just the ones who were discovered.
"At the February meeting of Charity Whist Drives the organiser Derek Farr expressed his appreciation to the small group of regular Whist players for their support and generosity during the last 12 months which has enabled a gift of £100.00 to be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Fund.
Self-harming has been called the new anorexia. An astonishing amount of young people are cutting themselves. Sadly, unlike anorexia, cutting can be kept secret for much longer. What can possibly be the attraction of causing yourself pain, bleeding and scarring? Many self-harmers seemed tortured by feelings of intense self-hatred and loathing, and say that this is a way of reducing the intense emotional pressure that they feel. Some experts believe that the contemporary craze for tattoos is a part of this desire to seek emotional relief through self-inflicted pain. Whatever is going on, self-harmers are starting ever younger- in 2012 cases involving children under 14 rose by 30 per cent.
Charity Whist Drives are held at 7.30 p.m on the 1st Thursday of every month in the Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley. Admission £2.00. Large free car park. All players are welcome to join us and enjoy a good game in a friendly atmosphere"
There is a website www.selfharm.co.uk which is run by Christians, and which gives people information about self-harm, points out helpful organisations, and provides resources such as teaching packs. There is also a forum so that young people can post their stories, poems, and artwork and encourage each other. The site is monitored, to keep it safe.
NHS 111 service update Further to our last update the NHS 111 service across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland was fully rolled out on schedule by November 2013. Since then it has continued to perform well with key performance indicators well in excess of the government target of 95% of calls answered within 60 seconds.
96.01% of calls answered within 60 seconds and only 0.48% calls abandoned after 30 seconds. Around a third of calls during Christmas week were on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and the busiest period of the week was between 8.00am and 12 noon on Boxing Day.
Christmas traditionally sees an increase in patient flow across the urgent and emergency healthcare system. We prepared a robust capacity management strategy in conjunction with NHS England and our provider, Derbyshire Health United to ensure that the NHS 111 service was able to manage projected increases in calls.
The percentage of patient referrals from NHS 111 to other parts of the urgent care system such as the ambulance service, urgent care centres and walk in centres has been as expected. This means that the NHS 111 service locally has not created difficulties for other parts of the healthcare system. Ensuring that NHS 111 provides our patients with a safe, high quality service continues to be of paramount importance to us.
As a result of this the service continued to perform well during the entire Christmas and new year period which saw a 28% increase in call volumes (less than projected) compared to the first week in December. The increase in staffing during the holiday period ensured that call response times were strong with
The CCGs in our counties are helping people to Choose Better by getting the right medical help in the place most appropriate to their health condition. More campaigns to support this are underway and these which will
encourage people to decide on the most appropriate course of action for their condition. This may be looking after themselves at home, talking to their pharmacist, calling NHS 111 or getting in touch with their GP before going to the Emergency Department (A&E) or an Urgent Care Centre. Borough blitz to tackle enviro-crime is a success!
Methodist Hall, Howe Lane, Rothley Every other Tuesday at 2-30pm Tuesday March 4th: Diane Wise: Experiences of a Mayor
DOG fouling and litter in hotspot areas were slashed by a third during a Charnwood Borough Council enviro-crime crackdown. The Council’s three-month Don’t Muck Around campaign helped cut dog fouling by 32% in a record nine areas across the Borough and litter by 37% in three hotspots.
Tuesday March 18th: Ginny Kemp: Hydes Herbal Clinic Tuesday April 1st: Lorna Grey: Make a Wish Tuesday April 15th: Sue Moore: Easter Message
As part of the crackdown, enforcement officers also issued 35 fixed penalty notices to offenders for a range of environmental offences. The Council also recorded a six per cent increase in awareness of Duty of Care offences - where householders can be fined for failing to responsibly get rid of waste from their homes. Councillor Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “Once again the Don’t Muck Around campaign has helped to reduce incidents of environmental crime across the Borough, through education and enforcement.
Tuesday April 29th: Linda Robinson: What a fine mess (gardens) Tuesday May 13th: AGM Tuesday May 27th Our Charity: Carpenters Arms
Saturday March 8th COFFEE MORNING 10am to 11-30am
“The Council is committed to ensuring Charnwood is clean and tidy for residents and visitors, and we will continue to work towards driving down incidents. “This year we focused on a record nine hotspot areas following feedback from our residents, so I am really pleased we can report a reduction in incidents across the three campaign strands. “The reduction in the instances of dog fouling in the hotspots is particularly encouraging. Please could I, on behalf of local residents, thank those people who have changed their behaviour and now clean up after their pet. Your help in improving the area is appreciated.” The campaign ran for three months, from September 27, 2013, to December 20, 2013, and featured a ‘Bin it to Win it’ game in Loughborough Town Centre and saw Loughborough Town Hall’s panto villain ‘Cesspit’ fined for dropping litter in the street. The Council also produced a trilogy of tongue-in-cheek ‘public information’ films to promote how to responsibly get rid of dog foul, litter and household waste. Officers monitored hotspot areas before and after the campaign to see what impact the education and enforcement work had on offences. Dog fouling hotspots covered Rothley, Loughborough, Barkby, Queniborough, East Goscote, Woodhouse, Mountsorrel, Sileby and Birstall. To help with education, the Council also introduced an online tool to help residents plot the poo in their area, and the location of nearby dog and litter bins. All reports of dog fouling now featuring on www.my.charnwood.gov.uk. For more information about environmental crime, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/dma2013. You can also check out the campaign on Facebook.com/dontmuck or watch the videos by visiting http://www.youtube.com/user/charnwoodbc/videos?shelf_id=2&sort=dd&view=0.
