We were plied with more than generous helpings of Strawberries, Double Cream, Strawberry Jam, Butter and newly baked fruited Scones, not to mention the vast amount of tea and coffee supplied. The service from the Waitresses was exemplary, which more than added to the happy occasion; we shall look forward to repeating the event again next year.

Public Health England has issued advice to help people stay safe in the hot conditions. Warnings of a heatwave are given as soon as the Met Office forecasts that there is a 60% chance of temperatures being high enough on at least two consecutive days to have a significant effect on health.

•
Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm
•
Wear sunscreen
•
Wear loose cotton clothing
•
Drink lots of cool drinks
•
Seek shade
•
Wear sunglasses and a hat
•
Look out for others especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and babies and those with serious illnesses
•
Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals
Remember that it can get uncomfortably hot indoors too. Try to keep your bedroom and living space cool, by closing the curtains on windows that receive the sun and opening your windows at cooler times of the day and overnight when you can. Turn off non-essential lights and electrical items as these generate heat. A Public Health England spokesman said: “While many people enjoy hot weather, high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be particularly vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses”.

BOWLS FUN DAY AT CO-OP SPORTS GROUND Down at the Co-op sports ground in Birstall we are a pretty friendly bunch and the social side is just as important as the bowls. In fact you could say that every day is a fun day with bowls but sometimes we make a special effort. On a warm sunny day at the end of May we all dressed in colourful clothes, had a short game of bowls, raised some money for charity – the Peter Le Marchant Trust – then sat down to a fantastic spread of tea, cakes and scones. A good afternoon was enjoyed by all. Carolyn and John won a prize for their attire. They came as “Elf and Safety”. What could be better?
If you have ever fancied bowls, we can arrange taster sessions. There will be no charge and you will not be under any obligation. All abilities welcome and why not bring a friend? For further information contact Carolyn or John on 2675947.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get
from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ALL CHANGE AT SOAR VALLEY The Rotary Club's first lady President Alison Porter handed over the presidential chain of office to Incoming President Richard Hilliar at its annual changeover evening. The event was held at Birstall Golf Club and as usual was a joint changeover with the Inner Wheel Club of the Soar Valley which saw Sheila Bickley hand over the reins to Incoming President Val Burdett. Both Presidents stressed the need for active recruitment of new members and to continue close co-operation between the two Clubs. The Rotary Club meets each Monday evening at the Red Lion, Rothley and the Inner Wheel meets monthly at Quorn Grange. Both Clubs enjoy a meal followed by interesting visiting speakers together with social events ie. Bowls, quizzes and fund raising activities and would welcome approaches from anyone interested in finding out more information. During the evening a Paul Harris award was presented to Rtn. Alastair Wood and a Sapphire Paul Harris award to Rtn. Alan Meredith in recognition of their services to Rotary in the community.

30 YEARS AND £200,000 FOR CHARITY
Have a Safer Summer 2015 The annual campaign to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer has begun.
Thanks to an ever-growing number of runners – both non-affiliated individual and Running Club members – and the generosity of race sponsors, Rothley & Soar Valley Lions Club has raised over £200,000 for local charities over the past 30 years with its annual 10K Road Race fund-raising event.
With the summer upon us, the Leicestershire’s Anti-Social Behaviour Delivery Group, which is made up of a range of organisations including Leicester City, Leicestershire County and Rutland County councils, the police and seven district authorities, is encouraging people to enjoy themselves but also be considerate to those around them.
This year, on the warm and dry evening of 16th June, the event attracted just under 600 runners, as a result of which Lions expect to raise in excess of £12,000. These funds will again benefit LOROS (which also celebrates its 30th anniversary this year), Vista, Rainbows, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Rutland Air Ambulance Service and other local charities.
•
Drink safe and stay safe.
•
Be tolerant of young people who also want to enjoy the summer.
•
Be considerate, if you’re planning an event or party.
•
If you’re having a BBQ think safety first.
Rothley Village residents turned out in force to cheer on the runners around the challenging course and at the finish line in Woodgate. The Rothley 10K Road Race was rebranded as the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10K four years ago, and having such a successful company assisting has been a great help to the success and profile of the event. Members of Rothley & Soar Valley Lions’ Club are very grateful to many others who helped in the background to make the event such a success and, very much in plain sight, to staff from LOROS, who, after the race, handed out commemorative T-shirts to the runners. The Rothley 10K website carries photographs and a video of the race, race results and other useful information.
VE & VJ Victory Concert Wednesday August 5th Here is a concert you should not miss. The Coalville Male voice Choir are supporting the Rothley & District RBL at the Rothley Centre on Wednesday August 5th in a musical celebration of the end of the 2nd World War conflicts and victories in Europe & Japan. The doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, and teas or coffee will be served in the interval. All are welcome to this important and patriotic celebration and the ticket price is £8.50 p.p. It is important to book your place by calling John Leake on 0116 230 3858. You may pay at the door.
Their top tips for a safer summer include:
As part of the safer summer campaign they have contacted all schools across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland asking that pupils consider their behaviour and act responsibly whilst on holiday. The Force has also gathered information about local activities for young people which are taking place in various locations across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland during the summer holidays. That information is now available on: www.beatsafe.co.uk Neighbourhood officers, local councils and the IMPACT Team, which is part of the Leicestershire Youth Offending Service, are just some of many stakeholders that will be working together running events in the city and county. Leicestershire Police will be ‘tweeting’ on @leicspolice making people aware of what events will be taking place during the summer period. Superintendent Mark Newcombe, the Force’s lead on anti-social behaviour, said: “We would like adults and young people to work together to enjoy the summer season by respecting and tolerating each other regardless of their age or background.” “It is important that residents consider how their actions will affect others.” Joe Orson, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for safer communities, said: “During this time of year there is an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour. Partners will be using Twitter to provide advice and tips to raise awareness of how people can stay safe, have fun but at the same time reminding them to be mindful of others.” People can follow the campaign on Twitter, @leicspolice and by using the hash tag #SaferSummerLLR - Report anti-social behaviour by calling 101 or by contacting your local district / borough council - Activities for young people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland can be found on: www.beatsafe.co.uk

Families join jog to remember Joe NEARLY 100 people took part in a family fun run held in memory of a Rothley teenager. Joe’s Jog, a one-mile run organised by the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) and LOROS, attracted 92 runners completing the course in support of the charity. It took place on Tuesday (16 June) just before the Mattoli Woods Rothley 10k running event, which is held in aid of LOROS, the hospice for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Joe’s Jog raises funds jointly for LOROS and for the JHMT, which campaigns for greater understanding and awareness of sudden heart conditions. The JHMT was set up in memory of Joe Humphries, who collapsed and died, aged 14, while out jogging near his family home in Rothley. Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) – a group of lethal heart diseases which can cause sudden cardiac death in young people. Joe’s dad and JHMT chair Steve Humphries said: “It was fantastic to see so many people come out in support of Joe, and in support of the great work of both the JHMT and LOROS. “Thanks also go to Joe’s army of volunteers who gave up their precious time to help out behind the scenes with marshalling and other event duties. “Lots of Joe’s friends completed the run and it was great to see the local Rothley Imps under-10s football team running together in their kit. “Joe’s Jog is an inclusive, family-friendly event that really brings the community together. It also raises awareness of the vital work of the JHMT. “We want to make sure everyone knows what to do if someone collapses in sudden cardiac arrest, which is why we are working with key partners to create the next generation of lifesavers, helping to get more defibrillators fitted in community and sports locations, and aiming to put this issue on the agenda for medics, teachers and the wider public.” In a spectacular ‘double’, first across the finish line this year was last year’s Joe’s Jog winner, 13-year-old Cameron Harrison White, in just 5mins 45 secs. Runners-up were 14-year-old James Pilbeam in 5mins53 and 12-year-old Ryan Elston in 5mins59. Colin Favell, on behalf of Rothley 10k Race organisers Rothley & Soar Valley Lions Club and Mattioli Woods said: “We were delighted to see Joe's Jog back again for 2015 – it's a welcome addition to the well-established Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k race. We know how generous everyone who gets involved in this event is – giving their time and raising money for so many worthy causes – so it’s great that the JHMT was represented on the night.”
Laura Fitzsawyer, LOROS fund-raising co-ordinator, added: “It was great to see so many people taking part, supporting LOROS and JHMT, giving their time so generously to raise ANING SERVICE money for such worthy causes. It means we can continue to support local people and make a positive difference to patients and their families, at a time when they need it most.”

St James Church’s Record Breaking year for the Charnwood Annual Garden Party Forest Cycle Ride St James Church’s Annual Garden Party takes place on Monday 31st August from 2pm-4pm on the Church Lawn, Church Hill, Birstall. This year’s chosen charity to benefit is the Alzheimer’s Society, a cause which touches the lives of many people. There will be some new features at the garden party this year, particularly a number of fun competitions. Do you fancy yourself as a good photographer? Any subject or style will be acceptable, and as in all the events, there are three age groups: under-10s, 11-17 years and 18+. You need to bring your photo entry to St James’ Church by 5pm on Friday 28th August for it to be judged by an independent expert. How about using your imagination to create a fancy dress to wear at the garden party? The only conditions for entry are that you must have made it yourself, and the judges must be able to recognise what it’s meant to be! Judging will take place during the afternoon and rosettes will be awarded for the best three in each age group. OR, who can make the best cake? All those TV programmes you’ve watched! All those mouthwatering cakes must have inspired you, so why not enter, either with small cakes (at least three) or full-size. They too will be judged on the afternoon, in the three age groups. Please bring your cakes to the church by 1pm on Monday 31st, labelled with your name and the name of the cake(s), so that rosettes can be awarded by an experienced cake-maker. If you need to know more about any of these competitions, you can look up the ‘rules’ on the church website at www.Birstall.org or contact Vince on 07840 855030. Even if the weather is poor, the fete will take place in the Church building and teas will be served there all afternoon. There will also be stalls, games, music, ice-cream and much more, so put this date in your diary now!
From Beryl McHugh
This year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride was the best yet, with a great turn out of 190 riders – which was a record number. ‘We would like to thank all our super cyclists, our wonderful marshals, our cake bakers and our helpers, we would like to give a special mention to our sponsors The Woodies and Bradley’s Supermarket, who have supported this event annually – thank you so much for your support.’ Emma Hallam, Alex’s Wish Founder and Alex’s Mum The event was photographed and filmed by Shadow Media, with the photos and film now available at www.alexswish.co.uk. There were some amazing sights including our first unicyclist who managed to do the full 20 miles. The weather was great and there was good back up and support from Raynet, St John’s Ambulance and Pedal Power of Loughborough, who were all working at the event to keep all the riders safe and on the road. The last bits of sponsorship money have just been sent in and the event this year raised a massive £9,156.18 for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an amazing record breaking amount. ‘Such a fantastic event. Brilliant route, well signposted, extremely friendly marshals and the other cyclists were all lovely, very friendly and supportive. Check in was easy, on line entry easy – very impressive. The cakes and tea included at the end were genius and finished off a lovely morning’ said Jessica Apps a cyclist that took part in the ride. othley & District RBL at the Rothley Centre on Wednesday August 5th in a musical celebration of the end of the 2nd World War conflicts and victories in Europe & Japan. The doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, and teas or coffee will be served in the interval. All are welcome to this important and patriotic celebration and the ticket price is £8.50 p.p.
