Guides, Brownies and Rainbows Visit The New Mountsorrel Railway Station A dry and sunny evening was to be had as approximately 150 Guides, Brownies and Rainbows from Quorn met at the new Mountsorrel Railway Station. Over the past 7 years community volunteers have spent their free time restoring the Mountsorrel Railway line and creating a nature reserve. The new Mountsorrel Station will allow passengers to ride heritage trains along the railway, when the station and railway open to the public in October. The girls, along with their leaders, and volunteers for the project, walked the restored track to the nature reserve, where they took part in sowing wild flower seeds and bark rubbing, before assembling at the picnic area for their walk back to the station. Project leader, Steve Cramp, was presented with a donation from the group, along with hand painted bird boxes, which the girls had made. The next phase of this exciting volunteer project is now under way. A new community heritage centre and tea room is being created alongside the restored railway on the Rothley/Mountsorrel village border. This involves relocating an historic granite barn from Kinchley Lane, Rothley and the old Time Office from Mountsorrel Quarry. When complete early next year, the centre will detail the history of Mountsorrel and Rothley and provide an inclusive day out for the whole family. Fund raising is now focused on the phase 2 Mountsorrel Railway Museum and Exhibition buildings in the base of the old Nunckley Hill quarry. The museum will allow historic railway vehicles from the old Mountsorrel quarry to be displayed to the public and the exhibition building will tell the story of the geology of the Charnwood Forest, the history of quarrying in Mountsorrel and the story of the Mountsorrel Railway. Planning permission has already been obtained for the construction of both buildings, which will cost approximately £70,000. Anyone interested in volunteering or donating to the Mountsorrel Railway Project should contact steve.cramp@heritage-centre.co.uk or visit www.mountsorrelrailway.org.uk for more information.

GOLFING LIONS GIFTS TO HOSPITAL

There was no problem in deciding how to allocate the £6000 raised by Rothley & Soar Valley, Thurnby and Leicester Charnwood Lions Clubs at their joint Annual Charity Golf Day at Beedles Lake Golf Club and on 15th April, two cheques were presented by representatives of the three Clubs. Dr G Warwick, Consultant Nephrologist of The John Walls Renal Unit of Leicester General Hospital wrote, “On behalf of the patients and staff working in the Kidney Unit, I would like to thank the Lions Clubs for their generous donation of £3000. These additional funds are very useful in providing some extra comfort for patients who have to attend for dialysis three times a week for many years. They also help to bolster the NHS equipment fund.” Kamlesh Khunti, Professor of Primary Care Diabetes & Vascular Medicine of the Leicester Diabetes Centre at Leicester General Hospital wrote, “There is a high level of diabetes in the Leicestershire area and we undertake a variety of research, both drug trials and academic studies. Much of our work has helped to develop and shape national guidelines, especially around the area of screening for diabetes, and in the development of educational interventions. Your kind donation of £3000 will go towards this area and benefit many people.” Club members are grateful to their golf-loving Lions and their friends and are proud to have made it possible to benefit so many hospital patients in Leicester.

Callout for Library Volunteers We are getting closer to knowing when the handover date for Rothley Library will take place. The date for the first meetings for volunteers has now been set – they will take place on Wednesday, 8th July, either from 9.30-10.30am or from 7.00-8.00pm, both at the Rothley Centre. If you are interested, please contact us on volunteers@rothleycommunitylibrary.co.uk, or in the box in the Post Office. News about the competition for local adults and children to design a logo and signs for the library will be coming out soon, and there will be a quiz for children too. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get

from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

On a bright and sunny afternoon on Monday, 8th June, Members of the Club gathered together and welcomed New Members and some Old Members, who through a change of social circumstances, were able to return to us. Our speaker, Mr Ken Goddard, whose talk was entitled “An Introduction to Classical Music”, treated us to an extravaganza of classical music, delivered in an entertaining and light-hearted manner – there was something for everyone’s tastes. Ken began his well-presented and researched talk by reminding us of the era of the BBC Radio “Light Programme” (prior to Radio 2), which provided a wide range of music programmes and was a starting point for many artistes and performers of the day. With the aid of DVD’s and a variety of examples of musical recordings and performances, Ken proceeded to induct us into a basic understanding of classical music, beginning with the types of composition and including the composers relevant to each music genre:

The Concerto is written for a solo instrument, supported by an orchestra, and consists of three movements – the first is fast (allegro), the second slow (adagio) and the third the grand finale. Violin and piano concertos are the most popular, and we heard a short piece of the 2nd movement of Bruch’s “Concerto for Violin” played by Yehudi Menuhin, who, we were astonished to hear, prepared prior to any major performance by standing on his head – perhaps it helped to improve his concentration! We then moved on to the first and last movements of Tchaikovsky’s “1st Piano Concerto” whose work is often played by the renowned Chinese pianist, Lang Lang. A Symphony is a large-scale orchestral composition, consisting of four or more movements. Haydn was one of the most prolific composers, writing 104 symphonies and other symphony composers include Mahler, Dvorak and Shostakovich – we listened to excerpts of the opening of Beethoven’s 5th symphony (rousing) and of the 5th movement of his 6th (much gentler). Opera can be described as a form of theatre, but with sung dialogue. Arias for sopranos and

tenors derive from opera and, in recent years, many of the great arias have been popularised, particularly by “The Three Tenors”, namely Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo. One of the most recognisable arias is “Nessun Dorma” from “La Boheme”, which we heard sung by Pavarotti. Operetta came next (more light-hearted than opera), with an excerpt from the “Merry Widow”. Oratorios are based on a religious theme, are often staged in a cathedral and usually have four main soloists, supported by a choir. Composers include Handel, Bach, Elgar and Mendelssohn – we heard some of the “Halleluiah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah”. Ballet music has specific structure to suit the art-form, with Tchaikovsky being one of its great exponents – “Sleeping Beauty” was the piece we heard. We learned of Overtures and Preludes (used as introductions), examples being “The Marriage of Figaro” and the “William Tell” (Rossini) and “1812” Overtures (Tchaikovsky); Intermezzos (between scenes), examples include “Meditation” by Massenet and the delightful “Cavaliera Rusticana” by Mascagni; Tone Poems are poems set to music and “Be Still my Soul” from “Finlandia” is a classic; lastly came Canons with the example of the “Canon in G” by Pachelbel. Ken concluded his presentation by garnering audience participation as he led us in a “Last Night of the Proms” session – we joined enthusiastically in singing “Jerusalem”, “Rule Britannia” and “Land of Hope and Glory”, accompanied by energetic waving of patriotic flags which were thoughtfully supplied for our use by Ken! After such an entertaining time, plus our vocal contributions, we were very pleased to enjoy some welcome refreshments to conclude the afternoon. Our next meeting is planned for Monday 13th July at 2.30pm, when our venue will be “The Bluebell Inn” at Rothley to partake in our annual Strawberry Cream Tea – cost of the tea is £5.50 per person. Please contact Mrs Sue Wakerley on 0116 2351156 or myself on 0116 2363467 for further details. If you would care to join us, you will be most welcome.

Watermead Challenge 2015 Wreake Valley Rotary Club present the Watermead Challenge 2015 Charity Run in aid of Birstall BAGS local charity (www.birstallbags.co.uk) and sponsored by James Sellicks Estate Agents and Chartered Surveyors.

Watermead Challenge 2015

A charity 5 mile run & 3 mile run

The BVCC Round Up BVCC has continued their fantastic start to the year in both the 1st XI and 2nd XI teams. The 1st team are currently fourth place and in touching distance of top spot. Division 4 central is a very competitive league with many teams of similar ability, so winning key moments in matches and trusting the depth of the team has seemed to be the success at the moment. New signings Max Lewin has had a great start with the bat and Grant Wright is getting stronger every week with the ball and both look like quality acquisitions for the club. The 2nd team after an uneasy start has really hit form. With the 1st team playing an established side each week, it has allowed skipper Ashley Coulthard to pick his best team. Ian Bartlett is on fire with the bat and BVCC junior Jack Wright is looking devastating with the ball. This is putting the club in a great position as we still have club academics Prad Sood and Sunny Lalseta to come back this month. Exceptional Performances so far this season: 1st XI Max Lewin 84 vs Leciester Banks, 63 vs Ratby Town. Andy Galpin 69 n.o. vs Leicester Banks, 92 vs Rothley Park. Kyle Thomas 5/41 vs Ratby Town. Andy Lord – a screamer of a catch vs Rothley Park. 2nd XI Ian Bartlett 53 vs Sapcote, 83 vs Ashby Hastings, 50 vs Loughborough Greenfields. Rich Olsen 55 vs Sapcote. Ashley Coulthard 59 vs Loughborough Greenfields. Jack Wright 4/25 vs Hinckley CC. Steve Findley 5 wickets vs Ashby Hastings. Things happening in June (Home fixtures – 1pm start)

Are you becoming ‘nomophobic’? Where is your mobile phone? When did you last check it? If it is close, and you have checked it within the last few minutes or so, you may have nomophobia…. Fear of being separated from your mobile phone. ‘Nomo’ stands for ‘no mobile’, and what you ‘fear’ is being out of contact, not connected. Nomophobia is taking its toll on family life, it seems. As one father recently admitted: “The very first thing I do when I wake up in the morning – and the very last thing I do at night – is pick up my phone, press the Twitter app and see what’s going on in the world…. During the day I can’t undertake the most basic task – from making the children’s lunch to cleaning my teeth – without swiping the screen…” Now Ofcom, the communications industry regulator, has released figures that show that the average amount we spend online has more than doubled from 9.9 hours a week 10 years ago to 20.5 hours a week. A separate report finds that the average person in the UK checks their phone 50 times a day. Psychiatrists are warning of widespread technology addiction, and urge people to take ‘holidays’ from their gadgets. Most of us won’t manage that, but we might do well to heed at least one piece of advice: avoid screenlight for an hour before you sleep at night, in order to sleep properly. Phone addiction can be just as damaging as addiction to alcohol or gambling. If this is you, be honest, and consider the effect your screen addiction could be having on those people close to you.

Highcliffe Summer Fair The gates of Highcliffe Primary School will be opened once again to welcome visitors for the fantastic Highcliffe Summer Fair, on Saturday 20th June 2015, 1-4pm. This exciting family fair is open to all members of the community who can come and join in the fun.

Registered Charity No. 1028423

Local groups, many made up of children that attend Highcliffe Primary School, will be providing entertainment. The hugely popular Great Highcliffe Bake Off, now in its fourth year, will be hosted and everyone is encouraged to enter and show off their skills. Two age groups, under-sixteens and over-sixteens can submit one entry into these categories: one large cake or four identical cupcakes. Awards will be given to the winners of each category and there is a prize for best in show in each age group. Visitors to the fair will be able to sample the delights afterwards as the entries are sliced and sold to raise money for the school. Also featuring on the day will be a market of homemade crafts, bouncy castle, coffee shop and raffle draw – with prizes donated by generous businesses across the village. The event is organised by Highcliffe Parent Teachers Association. Reshma Kukadia, chair of the association says of the event: ‘Our Summer Fair is our main fundraising event of the year and has been fantastically supported by pupils, parents and carers alike. Last year we had a fantastic Summer Fair celebrating 50 years of Highcliffe Primary School and are looking forward this year to another family fun day out for the whole community. I’d like to thank the local businesses who have been very generous in donating prizes and continuing to support us; we’d welcome any further donations.’ The Summer Fair runs from 1-4pm on Saturday 20th June. Entrance is 50p per adult, free for school children, and can be paid at both Greengate Lane and Elmfield Avenue gates. If you would like more information or are interested in taking a stall for the homemade craft market, please email HighcliffePTA@outlook.com or visit www.facebook.com/HighcliffePTA.

Something to smile about: emoji

Emoji has become the fastest growing language in history. That is the verdict of a linguistics expert, who has studied the spreading catalogue of 722 digital smiley faces and symbols. So far a staggering eight out of ten of us have used emoji to communicate with someone. It seems that many young people find it easier to communicate using the smartphone icons – which include hearts and food and drink and an array of facial emotions – rather than words. 72 percent of 18 to 25 year olds say they find it easier to put across their feelings using emoji rather than words. According to research by TalkTalk Mobile, the top ten most popular symbols are: smiley face, cry with laughter, love heart, red-cheeked face, thumbs up, tongue out face, blowing a kiss, winking face, confused face, and ‘see no evil’ face.

Victoria’s Bush Hog Tails. “I live in Nottingham although the characters in my books are touching the hearts of so many people all over the place! I was on BBC radio Leicester earlier in the year with Ed Stagg and have got copies of my books in Japan, Australia, Kuwait and New Zealand! It makes me feel really proud and happy” Victoria is very passionate and dedicated in trying to raise as much awareness as she can for animals. She has written and self illustrated a children's book and is hoping to help animals as much as she can. Along with helping animals she also really wants to encourage as many children as possible to enjoy reading. Victoria lives in Nottingham and it has always been her dream to write a book. Finally years later she achieved her dream and now a little creature is raising awareness for other real life animals. Her book Bush Hog Tails is enjoyed by children and adults in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and an English teaching school in Kuwait! At the moment hedgehogs are on the decline so Victoria is trying to let people know about that as much as possible and how they can protect them in their gardens. Victoria says ‘All it takes to try to protect these animals is just a small gap in the fences of gardens so they can wander freely searching for food.’ From the sales of her books Victoria donates all profits to wildlife charities. ‘I have so far this year helped a hedgehog rescue by donating two copies of my books for the owners to auction. She raised just over £200 which enabled her to purchase a hedgehog X ray machine and important medication. And yesterday I handed over a cheque for £211 to Nuneaton and Warwickshire wildlife sanctuary.’ Victoria’s books are about a lovable new kind of creature called a Bush-hog who often gets mistaken for a hedgehog even though he looks nothing like one! He is smaller, has shiny metal spikes and unlike hedgehogs likes to sleep at night! With his friend Fluffy the cat he embarks on many adventures learning about new animals in a fun and exciting way. To find out more you can visit Victoria’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bush-hog-tails/563458233738596 Or you can purchase a book directly from ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ Bush-Hog-Tails-Bushys-Field-Adventure-By-Victoria-Harwood-Childrens-Book/261892605934?pt

Rolls- Royce Retired Employees Association The Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association's latest 2day excursion comprised of a late morning departure to London where despite many road and bridge closures they enjoyed a coach tour of many of the capitals landmarks. After parking at the Tower of London the members wandered off to do some sightseeing on foot. They all met up at 7-30 for a conducted tour of the Tower of London with a Yeoman Warder where he gave a very graphic and knowledgeable talk on the sometimes bloody and colourful history of the Tower. After drinks and a buffet supper they witnessed the seven minute ceremony of the Keys. After further drinks in the Yeoman Warders Club they took an hours journey to the Crowns Plaza Hotel at Heathrow. After a leisurely breakfast they spent a day travelling back through Midsummer Murders country where the coach driver had done some serious research to give the members a memorable and informative day. Future trips planned include Sandringham Scarborough, Cambridge, Lincoln and Harrogate Flower Show. The June’s Walk & Talk Group saw 18 hardy souls turn up for a walk round Markeaton/Mackworth they started off in the rain and headed through the Maundy Play Centre, they then proceeded towards Mackworth Church with the Bonnie Prince Charlie waymarks showing them the way, continuing into Mackworth village. From the village they headed down the pavement alongside the A52 for 600 yards before heading north across the fields to Bowbridge Fields Farm, crossing the footbridge spanning Markeaton Brook They then headed towards Upper Vicarwood Farm, It wasn't long before they were back at the Car Park and headeding off to "The Jonty Farmer" for a lunch after an interesting 5.7 mile walk.
