On your marks, get set, go for the fifth Joe’s Jog!

Rothley Bowling Club provide a Sport for all ages

FAMILIES and young children are invited to join a charity mile-long fun run to support the work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). Joe’s Jog, now in its fifth year, will take place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event which takes place in the Leicestershire village on Tuesday 12 June.

Free membership for the first year. Bowls is the sport for all providing New Skills and New Friendships. It is a sport for all ages making it an activity that all the family can enjoy.

The inclusive and family-friendly fun run gives families and children aged seven and over the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening.

It has been medically proven that bowls improves your general health and helps to strengthen your immune system. Bowls is not only a sport but you can enjoy an active social life throughout the year, have an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

Joe was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people. Since Joe’s death, the JHMT continues to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The charity provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspire young people to fulfill their potential – something which the victims of SADS are cruelly denied. Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “This is another chance for more families to stride out together at JHMT’s annual fun run, which helps bring the community together in memory of Joe and helps to raise vital funds for JHMT's ongoing work to reduce the incidence of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) in young people. â€œNearly 250 runners took part last year and there was such a great community spirit. There was a real buzz to the evening and everyone had a fabulous time. We are hoping for a huge turnout as the event is becoming more popular every year.â€? The event will start at 6.15pm. Advance entry costs ÂŁ5 for adults and ÂŁ3 for children (minimum age 7). On-the-day entry costs ÂŁ10 for adults and ÂŁ6 for children. All funds raised from Joe’s Jog will go towards JHMT’s vital work to create a heart safe community for all. To take part in Joe’s Jog, enter online at: http://jhmt.org.uk/joes-jog To find out more about the Trust’s work, to get involved as a volunteer, or to learn how to apply for the Inspire Awards or CPR training for your sports club, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

Changes to Garden Waste Charge The garden waste collection provided by Charnwood Borough Council will cost £40 per year from May 1, 2018. The Council says the service provides excellent value for money and it plans to freeze the cost for the next two years. The Council says the charge is in line with many other authorities and the increase is necessary to make up for a shortfall of funding from other sources and ensure the quality of service is maintained.

Events Diary 2018

Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for the performance of major contracts, said: “The garden waste scheme is a high-quality service and an extremely popular one with over 34,000 subscriptions. “However, in order to maintain that quality and make up for shortfalls in our funding, we believe it necessary to increase the charge. “We accept the increase for 2018 is larger than in previous years but these are challenging times for local government funding. “In 2015 we lost a significant amount of funding when the county council withdrew recycling credits worth around £300,000 a year which was used to help cover the costs of the service. “We’ve had to increase the charge since then to help make up that shortfall and cover increases in the costs of providing the service. “There are further challenges ahead as recycling credits which contribute to the general household recycling service are being withdrawn by the county council this year, a loss of £500,000 to the borough council. Despite this we will still offer free bulky waste collections to Charnwood residents while many other authorities charge £15 or more.

“And while we are fortunate to be very financially stable, we need to manage our finances carefully and sensibly. “Garden waste collection is not a service we have to provide, nor do people have to subscribe, but we do believe it is an excellent service, value for money and one people want.” The new charge will come into effect on May 1 so anyone subscribing for the first time before then can take advantage of the existing charge of £28. Existing subscribers will be informed directly about the new charge two weeks before their subscription ends. To sign up for the garden waste service, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/gardenwaste

REVIVAL 2018

The Mountsorrel Community Team is pleased to announce that preparations for REVIVAL 2018 are well underway. Put the 12th August in your diary. With the fond memories of last year’s Mountsorrel REVIVAL still vivid in our minds, preparations for the 2018 event is well underway. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better with a range of new attractions and activities being explored. The Mountsorrel Community Team, who organise the event, have promised to keep residents updated as the time flies by. Debbie MacRae, the Chair of MCT, told us: “We are all so excited to be putting on our fifth REVIVAL. It is always a great day and is the one day in the year when the whole community comes together. This year we will have the new Memorial Centre available to us and we have already many new and established attractions booked in”. Of course, the day itself is at the end of a very long process and the work behind the scenes carries on from one event to the next. One of the Teams concerns is always public safety and as the event gets bigger changes are needed to ensure that everyone who visits the village has a safe and happy time. For this reason, the Team has expanded the road closures this year to include the Green and Watling Street, giving greater freedom for people to move around safely. Specifically, the following Mountsorrel Roads will be closed for the REVIVAL 12th August 2018 from 10:30 to 17:00: • Sileby Road: will be closed from its junction with the Market Place to the bypass junction for the REVIVAL. Access to affected properties will still be possible. A Diversion will be signposted. •

Watling Street: From its junction with the Market Place for about 35 metres. Access to and from affected properties will be possible via the Navins and Crown Lane.

The Green: will be closed on both sides from its junctions with Leicester Road to the Navins. Access to affected properties will still be possible. A Diversion will be signposted.

In addition, the main Leicester Road will be closed from 12:00 to 12:30 for safe passage of the Parade & Fun Run. The road will be closed from Bond Lane along the old A6 to the Green (at its junction with Leicester Rd). All these closures have been authorised by Leicestershire County Council. Debbie told us: ‘We feel these closures will add to the safety of the event and are a response to feedback we received last year. As usual we are looking for volunteers to help us with the day and we would be happy to hear from anyone who is interested.’ Further information about the MCT and the events it is organising can be found by visiting the website: http://the-mct.co.uk/ For those who want to volunteer or join the MCT, please contact Graham Lloyd on 07775 6161001.

GOOD NEWS FOR LOCAL FAMILY CARERS Earlier in the year, Local Charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland partnered with Dementia Adventures and Cedar Mews Care Home in Birstall held a very well attended, Family Carers Workshop. Vending machines for the homeless VENDING MACHINES that can provide essentials such as water, sandwiches, and warm socks to roughsleepers 24 hours a day, are to be installed in several cities in the UK. The first machine was installed in Nottingham at the beginning of the year, and already Action Hunger, the charity behind it, has had requests from charities and shelters wanting to set ones up in Manchester, London and Brighton. The machines are accessible only by a key card, which is handed out to known homeless people in the community. There is a limit on each card of three items a day. The machines are regularly stocked by volunteers, and many of the items are given by organisations that seek to redistribute unwanted foods and reduce food waste. The vending machines dispense water, fruit, energy bars, crisps, chocolate, sandwiches, sanitary and hygiene products, socks and books. They are accessible 24 hours a day. Jon chose the charity for his captain’s year, raising money at a variety of golfing and social events throughout 2017. Rainbows Community Fundraiser, Jess Dixon, said the money would be so welcome and was delighted the club had raised such a wonderful amount and thanked all the club members and Jon for their support.

LOROS showcases pre-loved furniture around the county LOCAL PUBS, bars, cafés and even garden centres across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are showcasing the pre-loved furniture that LOROS Hospice has to offer as part of their latest campaign. Dozens of quality pieces of furniture will be available for you to try out, so see if you can spot one of our once loved pieces of furniture that’s so good, no-one would ever know it’s from a charity shop. Ann Middleton, one of the shop managers of the Uppingham Road furniture shop said: “We’re really excited to be able to show-off some of the furniture we have. There’s a wide variety of items here, old and new as well as some antique pieces, so it’s definitely worth a look.” LOROS Hospice is hoping to dispel any myths surrounding charity shops while encouraging shoppers to step outside their comfort zone and try buying from charity. “It’s great for those who are just moving into a new home and perhaps can’t afford to splash out on new furniture. “If you’re into upcycling, there are plenty of pieces that people can get their hands on and get creative with, and let’s face it, people will only know it’s from a charity shop if you tell them!

“We are always taking in new stock, so even if you don’t find what you’re looking for one day, it’s worth popping back in for a browse because who knows what we’ll have next.” added Ann. The ‘Choose Charity, Shop LOROS’ campaign features furniture from two of the 29 LOROS Charity Shops which offer so much more than you’d expect. The two furniture shops are based on Uppingham Road and Welford Road in Leicester and offer a full range of furniture for each room in the house. If anyone spots a piece of furniture out and about in the city and county, the Hospice are encouraging people to take a photo and tag them in it on social media using the hashtag #shoploros For more information on the campaign visit loros.co.uk/shoploros

Cut-price compost bins available for Leicestershire residents AS THE TIDYING-UP of gardens starts apace across Leicestershire, residents are being encouraged to compost their garden waste. Each year, Leicestershire residents produce more than 300,000 tonnes of rubbish and recyclables. Around 22 per cent of which is uncooked fruit, vegetables and garden waste that could have been composted rather than binned. To help, we are currently offering cut-price compost bins to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for waste management, said: “Spring is usually the ideal time for people to start mowing their lawns, trimming hedges and pruning shrubs. “Composting is a great way to feed your garden, it is better for the environment and, if you’re normally a compost buyer, you’ll also be saving money.” Compostable items include fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, coffee grounds, tea leaves, newspapers and cardboard boxes which will all decompose in a matter of months. The resulting compost can then be dug back into the garden to provide nutritious soil for budding crops. Leicestershire residents can pick up a compost bin at a subsidised price, from only £10.98. The bins are made from recycled plastic, adding to their environmental credentials. For more details or to order a home composter visit www.getcomposting.comOpens another website in new window or call 0844 571 4444. Residents can also call on the support of a Master Composter, volunteers who use their own skills and enthusiasm to raise awareness of the benefits of home composting, including how it can reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill.

Use it or lose it

IF YOU are retired, or about to retire, beware: brain function declines rapidly as soon as people stop work and decide to put their feet up. Recent research that tracked 3,400 retired civil servants found that short-term memory declined nearly 40 per cent faster once employees become pensioners. It seems that when you stop being regularly stimulated to think, your cognitive function slows down, and your memory loss and risk of dementia speed up. And so, experts at University College London and King’s College London advise older people to keep physically and mentally active, and to make sure they also interact with people on a regular basis.

GCR CANAL BRIDGE APPEAL REACHES £110,000

LOOKING TO TRY LOCAL ADVERTISING? SEE PAGE 3 FOR DETAILS

Watermead Challenge 2018 Time to think about a kitchen makeover Wreake Valley and Syston Rotary Clubs are holding the eighth Watermead Challenge charity run at Watermead Country Park on Tuesday 3rd July 2018.

The Great Central Railway's appeal for funds to repair a Victorian bridge in Loughborough has passed the one hundred and ten thousand pound mark. The rapid climb from the previous total followed a successful 'Money Match' promotion during March 2018. The 'Crossing the Canal' appeal is the latest fundraising for an exciting railway reunification project which will one day create an eighteen mile heritage line across the East Midlands. The appeal has a target of four hundred and seventy five thousand pounds. The money will be spent on bridge works to allow heritage trains to cross the Grand Union canal in Loughborough; the latest stage of the reunification project which has already seen a new bridge built over the Midland Main Line.

The fairly flat three and five mile course around the park’s attractive lakes offers experienced and novice runners the opportunity to set a personal best time. Full details of how to enter can be found at www.wreakevalleyrotary.org.uk. Chris Battye, Race Director commented: “last year we had nearly five hundred entries for this popular event. This year’s proceeds will be shared amongst three charities: Dementia UK, Leicestershire Childrens Holiday Centre and HCPT pilgrimage holidays. Venue restrictions mean numbers are limited to 500. Please enter early to avoid disappointment.”
